Understanding Cultural Identity
Understanding Your Cultural Identity Children begin to develop a sense of identity as individuals and
as members of groups from their earliest interactions with others (McAdoo, 1993; Sheets, 1999a)
(Trumbull and Pacheco 9). The very idea of being able to understand your own culture can better you
as a person and give you an even deeper understanding of life. Such cultural things you should
understand is your beliefs, the types of food you eat, what types of ethnicity they belong to, and even
where you live. These four things can give you a deeper understanding of your own culture. Now a
day cultures are mixed it is said that Not all of these aspects need to be shared, however, for people to
psychologically identify with a particular ethnic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With all these things understood small and large you will be one step closer to recognize your culture.
On another note you will also be able to understand yourself as a person. Only if you understand those
elements.

Understanding The Wheaton College Culture And Services
Understanding the Wheaton College Culture and Services
Wheaton College is a four year, private liberal arts college with a student body of approximately
1,600. The small size of the campus and student body serve to make Wheaton a close knit and student
centered community. The mission of the institution is to provide a transformative liberal arts education
for intellectually curious students in a collaborative, academically vibrant residential community that
values a diverse world (History and Mission). Wheaton prides itself on its reputation for academic
excellence and fostering a community that supports individual expression and collective
responsibility.

The second part of CORE is the New Student Orientation and Move In. All new students move into
their residence halls in August and participate in activities to acclimate them into the Wheaton
community. CORE August also offers three pre orientation programs to incoming students:
Intercultural, International and Abilities First (New Student Orientation and Move In). Each pre
orientation is designed to give students an opportunity to get acclimated with a new environment,
while meeting members of the college community who will share a common Wheaton experience in
the years to come.
The Abilities 1st! Pre Orientation is designed for students with learning disabilities. Various
workshops are offered for students and their families to ease the transition to college. Workshops
include a writing session, panel discussion, locating classrooms on campus, reviewing a syllabi and
other social activities (Abilities 1st! 2017 Pre Orientation Schedule). Students participating in the
program will also be able to meet individually with the Dean of Accessibility Services, to set up their
accommodations for the Fall semester. While many of the workshops assist students in developing a
better understanding of what to expect in their first year of college, it does not provide much
opportunity for students to develop characteristics and skills that are critical for college persistence.

Tully s Withdrawal
COL Brown requested that all three of his battalions be flown out of LZ X ray. However, General
Westmorland, fearing that this would be seen as an American defeat by the North Vietnamese forces,
overruled his decision. He instructed movements for LTC Tully s battalion to LZ Columbus and LTC
McDade s battalion to LZ Albany for extraction. As the battalions marched from LZ X ray, a flight of
B 52 Stratofortress was dropping munitions on Chu Pong Massif. Tully s unit reached LZ Columbus
with no further events. Unfortunately, LTC McDade s 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment did not
fare the same. LTC McDade s battalion had just been through a rough three days of fighting and took a

He considered the Ia Drang battle a win and it built an ongoing confidence in him and his

North Vietnamese forces could not match the American firepower but they could outlast them as they
had the French colonial military following World War II. The North Vietnamese were able to see how
Americans used their field artillery and air mobility. They learned to fight the Americans as close as
possible to negate the American fire superiority. This strategy would make it difficult for Americans to
use artillery against the North Vietnamese without harming their own forces. It built an ongoing
confidence in him and his subordinates. The North Vietnamese also learned that the Americans would
not pursue them across borders. This allowed them to cross into Cambodia, refit supplies, and relax. It
also allowed the NVA to choose when to fight and how long which proved a great advantage

Harval s Placid Room-Personal Narrative
Boooooooo! Whoaaaaaaaaaaaaa! There were 2 things going around in Harval s brain: one was to write
a postcard to his friends, and another was to relax in his placid room. But getting shoved into the
propulsion of inertia on a zip line was not on the list. That presumably might be one thing he was
going to do. Whoa, we re in Wyoming , said my dad, Jack in a loud voice that even the car following
us could probably hear. Due to my dad being so loud, I woke up in the middle of a dream but couldn t
forget my dream since it was very terrifying. It was about me climbing up 1000 ladders and swinging
onto a terrifying zip line and falling. Phew! I hope that I don t need to do that today, but you never
know, life is a surprise. How much more time, I asked in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Finally, in the distance, I saw a massive sign in the air about 15 ft. high that said Come over and notice
our wonders Then, I remembered my dream again and thought about the height of a zip line and about
people afraid of heights (like me) could actually go on that ride. Honestly, I couldn t go on that zip
line. Here we are, said my dad. In front of me were just green, lush trees with some animals just
roaming in its fertile forest. This is not very intriguing, said my brother Mayis in a very firm tone
which I thought would lead to him being grounded. By the way, when my brother gets grounded, he
starts crying like a young child who didn t get what they wanted. As my dad turned the ignition of the
car off, we all opened our black doors and put our feet on the asphalt surface of Wyoming State Park.
As I thought that this was no fun, I had no idea about how much FUN I m going to have with a
mountain full of sarcasm in that. As my dad checked into the booth, my brother and I inspected a
flower. Consequently we were going to start fighting over if it was a rose or not my dad came and

Types of Sinkholes
A sinkhole, also called a swallow hole, shakehole, swallet or doline, is a crater in the ground caused
by a sudden collapse of the surface layer whether it is the street, a field, a suburb, city, or other area,.
The causes of sinkholes consist of karst processes such as the chemical dissolution of carbonate rocks
and suffusion processes. The formation of sinkholes involves the processes of erosion. Sinkholes
develop due to surface drainage or running water. Though dry places are thought to have less water,
sinkholes can develop in these areas as well as long as the correct conditions come into play. They can
form from human activity as well like abandoned mines, pipelines and sewers. Sinkholes are most
common in states such as Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas.
Places with sandstone and quartzite terrains where the rock below the land surface is limestone or any
other carbonate rock that can be dissolved by ground water. When the rock below the surface layer
dissolves, spaces and caverns form underground. Sometimes it can take months or even years for these
caverns to form completely before the ground becomes too weak and collapses suddenly. There are
two main types of sinkholes. The most dangerous type of sinkhole is the cover collapse sinkhole. This
sinkhole shows up unexpectedly and can swallow cars, buildings and even people whole. Cover
collapse sinkholes are the types of sinkholes that

Revenge and Hatred in Sylvia Plath s Daddy Essay
Revenge and Hatred in Plath s Daddy
The power of Plath s Daddy to threaten, shock and move the reader remains undiminished, years after
it was written. To the unsuspecting reader, the experience of first reading Daddy is a confusion of
discomfort, excitement and guilty pleasure, for the pleasures of revenge are said to be sweet, and this
is a revenge poem of the first rank. Revenge upon whom? Father? Perhaps, more likely, upon her
husband. And her aim was true, for if anything Plath wrote damaged Ted Hughes for posterity, Daddy
is it. From this poem, we gather our indelible impressions of Hughes as a brute, a wife beater, a
vampire, even an implied racist and murderer (if we extend the Hitler metaphor to its fullest
implications) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
it literally rocked the moral fiber of the world, and we?re still reeling (if more jaded). It was a subject
on fire in the public imagination at the time. Plath?s appropriation of Holocaust imagery for her own
ends, which strikes so many as grossly inappropriate, can perhaps be interpreted as stemming from
that initial horrified zeitgeist. Perhaps she felt she was raising consciousness and expressing solidarity
of a sort. Her remarks in her interview with Peter Orr about making her poetry relevant can be looked
at from such an angle.
Of course, the other point of view is that she was stealing other people s real tragedy and tacking it on
to her own little psychic turbulence for shock value and good visceral punch to the reader s gut. I think
we must always keep in mind that Plath, to A. Alvarez, referred to this poem (and Lady Lazarus , a
piece even more riddled with Holocaust imagery) as a bit of light verse. Was she being sarcastic?
Reading Alvarez s memoir, I think he felt she was quite serious. So what on earth does that tell us
about this poet? I do think it implies a profound self absorption and narcissism. Chuffing me off like a
Jew the callousness of this poem, if one stops to think about it (and it s very hard to do so while in the
poem s grip), is appalling. Its ramifications are endless where

Bipolar Disorder In Everyday Lives
Bipolar Disorder and the Effects of it in Everyday Lives Bipolar Disorder is a brain disorder that may
bring upon abnormal changes in one s mood and energy that may harm the ability to go on with
everyday functions. The showings of this disorder can be very severe. Anyone of age can get this
disorder, but more commonly found in adults. There are many different types of this disorder
depending on how severe your symptoms are. Fortunately, this disease can be treated and successful
with the treatment. Scientists are studying the possible causes of this disorder, and most agree there is
no single cause; rather, many factors likely act together to produce the illness or increase risk (Insel
2009.) Patients with bipolar affective disorder are similar to normal persons in most areas of
personality (Klein Depue, 1985.) Most bipolar patients are normal in every way, and it might be hard
to spot this disease if not around the person a lot. This is an internal disease that cannot be spotted by

The four main types of this disorder is: Bipolar I Disorder, Bipolar II Disorder, Bipolar Disorder Not
Otherwise Specified, and Cyclothymic Disorder. Bipolar I Disorder is basically just a short term
episode, but can be very severe. Bipolar II Disorder is series of episodes but usually not full out or
severe. Bipolar Disorder Not Otherwise Specified is when you have the symptoms but not quite severe
enough to meet the guidelines to be diagnosed with the first two disorders. Cyclothymic Disorder is a
very benign for of this disorder. It can last up to two years, but the symptoms do not meet the criteria
for the first two named disorders. There is a more severe form of this disorder called Rapid cycling
Bipolar Disorder. This is when a person has more than four incidents in a year and they are very
severe. If left diagnosed, this disorder can continue to grow

Cooper And Garner
Cooper Garner, (2012) speak of the three R s one of them being a relationship, trusting relationships
between teachers and students prime the brain for learning, activate willingness to cooperate, and
encourage excellence p. 4. Securing relationships with students will allow the classroom to develop
and stabilize into a learning classroom . As an educator, the focus can then be on facilitating
advancement in knowledge. I currently find that the development of a respectful relationship with
clinical students and new employees allows the facilitation of a conducive learning environment. Of
course as discussed in Cooper Garner, (2012) I believe that it then leads to a growth mindset allowing
for a more impactful learning experience.
Vygotsky s theories are particularly useful in the clinical setting. For instance, for the student nurse
scaffolding allows for the provision of support until a new skill is learned. Whereas, scaffolding in the
orientation of a new nurse as described in Slavin, (2015) Chapter 2 is part of a concept called
cognitive apprenticeship and entails one on one instruction p. 40. Another concept is that of
cooperative learning this is demonstrated in the nursing simulation laboratory as students learn to
develop critical thinking skills based on each other s actions and questions during simulation
scenarios.
In Slavin Chapter 6 the levels of processing theory are of particular interest as the more meaning or
emphasis placed on details the more likely you are to store it in your long term memory. As an
educator knowing what aspects of material to emphasize would behoove the students long term
memory of the important material. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Baby Driver Reflection
I was hesitant to watch Baby Driver, despite liking the trailers and talent involved, because I have yet
to see a full Edgar Wright film. I ve seen parts of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim vs.
the World. I liked what I saw, but I wasn t sure I wanted to have my introduction to Wright be his fifth
film. Well, my willpower broke and I m happier for it.
Baby Driver focuses on the eponymous Baby (Ansel Elgort), a getaway driver working for a crime
boss (the now disgraced Kevin Spacey). Things get more complicated when Baby meets Debora (Lilly
James), a waitress who steals his heart, and gets involved in a job with some volatile coconspirators.
Of the several joys of this film, not the least of them is acting. That starts with Elgort, who is
impressive as Baby. He makes him someone we instantly like, with his cool demeanor and infectious
enthusiasm for music. We root for him right away, and that holds when we learn more about him and
Elgort convincingly portrays those depths.
As much as I liked Elgort, I probably liked James work even more. She does a lot with little to work
with as Debora. Her character doesn t have much depth on the page, but James has a magnetic screen
presence. She nails each scene and makes you believe her character is a real person with many
dimensions, even though the movie doesn t really explore them.
For the supporting cast, Spacey is quite good as the crime boss Doc. He s got a menacing vibe about
his serious persona and,

The Important Aspects Of Effective Nursing
Communication is one of the most important aspects in effective nursing. For a nurse to be successful,
communicating with patients, families, physicians, peers and ancillary departments is necessary.
Communication is not only verbal with language, words and sound, but also non verbal. Non verbal
behaviors such as touch, facial expressions, eye contact and movement, posture and silence make up
more than half of the art of communication (Giger, 2013). The population in the United States is
comprised of various cultures with different views of the meaning of non verbal communication.
Understanding the views of various cultures can create a positive and healing environment for the
patient, as well as increase patient and employee satisfaction (Starr Wallace, 2011).
Many patients feel comforted by touch; a hand on the shoulder can help to alleviate fear in the hospital
setting. Many cultures from Latin America, Spain and France are extremely affectionate and
communicate through touch (Giger, 2013). These cultures often share kisses on the cheek, hugs and
handshakes when greeting one another. As a nurse, I have experienced the embrace of a family from
Mexico showing appreciation for taking care of their loved one. It is important to understand that
other patients with different cultural backgrounds such as those from Germany and England, might
find this type of physical contact invasive and inappropriate (Giger, 2013). Therefore, it is important
for the nurse to understand the

The Center Of Philadelphi The Tower Of Terror
If you have ever been to Philly, you have probably passed it at one time an old abandoned building,
which at one time was the center of Philadelphia attention. I have travelled through Philadelphia many
times and have passed this impressive Victorian style building. Despite its abandoned and rundown
appearance, I have always said that this building had so much beauty and potential. The outside of the
building has intricate arching and architecture, and has eye catching brick and stone detailing. Driving
down Broad Street, going from North Philly towards the center of downtown, my eyes always drifted
to the left to stare at this building a structure somewhat resembling the Tower of Terror from Disney
World. After passing this building various times, my mind began to question if this building was at
one time a well kept and prosperous place. As I passed this building once more, I took note of the
rickety sign that sits on top of the building that reads Divine Lorraine Hotel . I began research on the
hotel and had never envisioned the history which stands behind that old desolate building. At one
time, the Divine Lorraine Hotel was the place to live in Philadelphia. Broad Street was a populated
and flourishing area in the city. So what is the history behind this building and what ever happened to
the Divine Lorraine Hotel? The hotel of striking architecture, through years of history, fell to shambles
after being one of the most successful hotels in Philadelphia.

Women In The Handmaid
The rarity of fertile women would suggest that they would be treated better by society due to the
importance of their work but that is not the case. Handmaids, whose only job is to engage in a sexual
ceremony with men and give birth to healthy babies, are the most shunned in society, despite their
invaluableness. Sex in Gilead is understood to be something impersonal, emotionless. It is not done
out of love or desire but for the purpose of reproduction only.
The taboo of sex does not only affect women. Low ranking officers, like Guardians, are not permitted
to touch a woman until they are promoted to a higher rank and therefore assigned a wife. If they earn
enough power later they might even get a Handmaid of their own (Atwood 2010, 32).

rebellion gave hope to all of the African Americans that one day they could all be equal. The Legacy
part of the topic comes from their mark that they left from holding up the black power sign during the

to show that no matter your race you are able to have equal rights. The glove they wore on their hand

Figurative Language In First Death
Elizabeth Bishop s poem First Death in Nova Scotia follows a small girl who is introduced to the
concept of death for the first time through her cousin, Arthur. Even though the narrator is just a child
who is experiencing death for this first time, she is extremely perceptive of her surroundings. The
details and language the girl uses to describe the situation illustrates the difficulty the girl is having
coming to terms with the idea of death, while also confusing her throughout the poem. The important
concepts of death, grief, and loss of innocence are conveyed by Bishop through the encounter the girl
is having with death. Bishop s theme in the poem seems to be that death can be extremely sorrowful
yet hard to understand and as such, people deal with these feelings in different ways, even children.
The narrator, being a small child, naturally uses distractions in her surroundings and her figurative
language to start to understand death at the end of the poem.
People deal with grief in different ways. As a small child, the way the narrator handles uncertainty and
pain is distressing, yet also expected. She finds distractions in the furniture and decorations. The child

by death, she is still afraid of it. Bishop s poem is unique in a sense that it is written through the point
of view of a small child. Furthermore, the child is experiencing a life changing and painful concept for
the first time. The child s innocence is shown by her response to death. By finding distractions through
comparisons, word choices, and even a stuffed loon in response to the inability to comprehend the
painful concept of death is the theme Bishop was trying to portray. She also touches on the idea that
trying to comprehend the finality of death, takes a toll on some

War causes Xenophobia. War is an armed conflict between more than two parties. Xenophobia is a
behavior that promotes fear or hatred against different cultures. Causal Mechanism War divides the
countries involved into two sides: us versus them. This division allows prejudice to permeate both
sides, creating racial slurs and stereotypes that define opposing sides. For example, characterizing
opponents as backwards or barbaric creates the idea that the opponents population is under oppressive
rule and require liberation. These slurs and stereotypes spill over to the population, who might be
influenced by propaganda to favor war. By constructing this narrative, it allows individuals from both
sides to conjure ideas against their enemies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hostilities against other nations occur for many reasons including colonialism, differences in culture
and politics, bad policies, proximity, and immigration. That being said, it is evident hostilities and
xenophobia have existed before war. Colonialism has helped shape many of the concepts of race in the
modern world. The domination of one race over another race plants an idea of racial superiority for
both the colonizer and the colonized. The skewed power dynamic that emerges from colonialism
effectively creates ideas like xenophobia. Moreover, the colonizers by imposing certain rules like
establishing which faiths are practiced or imposing slavery foster hostilities tow the colonized. The

Explain Why College Should Not Be Free Essay
Why college should not be free
College in modern times is said to be a necessity for success, but should college be free? The system
college creates relies on the cost of the education being extremely high to function, if we made college
free it would lose all of its value. Without the high price, college would just be an extension of your
high school education. Education is expensive and someone else would have to foot the bill for your
secondary learning and housing. On the other hand, college creates many problems for the students
who choose to attend. Some of these problems include a perceived lack of fairness, massive amounts
of debt, and a lack of opportunity for students who grew up in a lower economic class. Another
drawback to expensive education is the very intelligent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Debt has become a major issue in politics for my generation, people think they should be absolved of
the debt they signed up for. It would be very good for our country if no person had any debt from their
education. In a time where the majority of people own less than the top one percent, we should be
doing everything we can to help people who cannot pay for their education. The only problem is that
someone has to pay back the money that they barrowed. It would be irresponsible to trust your own
debt, that you knowingly signed up for, onto every tax paying American. When people sign up for
college it is not like anyone forced them to take out loans or forced them to go to college in the first
place. Some might say that the cost of college is so great that no person should be expected to pay
back such a large sum. While it is true that the cost is high, every person should be responsible for the
money that they borrowed to pay for their degree. Thankfully with a college degree you have more
opportunities at getting a high paying job to make it easier to pay your

The 2012 Global Financial Crisis
Introduction
The 2008 Global Financial Crisis (GFC) was the worst crisis in history, and has wide range and deep
effects on the world financial system and relations (Peihani 2012). The vulnerability of the world
financial system was exposed from the 2008 GFC (Mohamed 2011). Hence, countries are trying to
find a solution for the heavily market relied global financial system, and protectionism has drawn the
attention from a great portion of countries and researchers (Viju and Kerr 2011). Mohanmed (2011)

to decrease the rate of tariff from 1846 to 1857, to the average rate of 20%. The raise of tariff was

mature industries. Furthermore, due to the fact that tariff was the principal source of revenue for the
federal government (Bruce 1998), the Congress often avoid to use tariff for protectionist purpose,
which might reduce the number of import and less the revenues (Bruce 2011). The situation has turned
around since President William Howard created federal income tax (Bruce 1998), and it has soon

The Concept Of The Jumping Robot
ABSTRACT: Depending upon the type of terrain an¬¬d application, robot motion varies from simple
translatory motion to complex motions like walking, jumping, climbing. Jumping is a preferred mode
over others when it comes to crossing obstacles that are of a size larger than the robots own body. It is
better to jump over a terrain with irregular surface, debris, ground cracks than climbing and crossing
over them. A new mechanism for increasing the usefulness of ground robots in surveillance
applications has been proposed, which adds a jumping ability to the existing wheeled motion. The
operations of wheeled movement and the jumping mechanism are independent of each other. The

The robot will be driven with two motorized wheels and a balancing tail which will provide the third
point of contact. The jumping action will be obtained with the aid of the tail. The task is to tug the tail
within the body of the robot, preserving the normal reaction force with the ground and then releasing
it as it produces the energy to lift the robot body off the ground. Fig 1. Conceptual 3D model of the
Jumping Robot Existing methods to activate the tail on a wheeled robot are winching mechanism[4]
[5] and pneumatics[6][7] .In winching an additional actuator, required to hold the sheet in a coiled
state increases the power requirements and also adds extra weight to the body of the robot. For
pneumatics, the size of the robot increases due to the compressor involved. Also the number of firings
that can be produced are limited. Any drop in the pressure of compressed air will also lead to
malfunctioning of the jumping mechanism. Considering the difficulties faced above, the proposed
system shall make use of compression springs. The tail will be spring loaded. Concepts have been

humans that created it. With insight to the attributes of a society, life is memorialized and proved

the culture of life in India. Both the corruption of power and the sufferings of the people spread across

Capitalism In Brave New World
Evolution is a natural process of the world. Dinosaurs are no longer in existence, and the giant pandas
are not too far behind. Yet when it comes to humans, people have trouble acknowledging that the
human race, too, will have to come to an end; or as Kurzweil predicts, will have to adapt into
something better in terms of evolution. However, the current state of society, in which everyone is
strung on a hierarchy until the day he dies, the singularity will produce a less that favorable result.
Though inevitable and imminent, the singularity will make people increasingly unhappy by enhancing
the socially constructed hierarchies that separate us from free will (Singularity). Capitalism prevents
us from valuing ourselves, which is why we aren t happy. In Brave New World, it is obvious that
capitalistic ideals drive the society, in which their sole purpose is to consume, as they believe that
[one] can t consume much if [one sits] still and [reads] books (Brave New World 50). The desire to
produce, consume, and earn money at the end of it all makes us stray from the activities that bring
people the most pleasure. We are so caught up in making money and getting ourselves higher on the
never ending hierarchy that the idea of leisure and happiness is forgotten. Though the technology that
supports capitalism is thought to be highly developed and is a result of our most intellectual advances,
the reality is that we are becoming reliant on technology in order to make us happy;

A Critical Discourse Analysis Framework Essay
Methodology A critical discourse analysis framework News is manufactured industrially and deeply
influenced by the bureaucratic and economic structure of the media industry, by relations between the
media and other industries, and by relations with authoritative apparatuses and institutions such as
government. It reflects the prevailing values of a society in a particular historical context and
simultaneously shapes the society in return (Fowler, 1991/2013). Although we cannot simply suggest
an explicit causal relation between structurally determined material and symbolic resources and the
actual cultural practices, a pure linguistic analysis may still overlook the external constraints and the
effects of the cultural practices. The embryo of cultural studies finds its roots in the historical context
of a social structure shaped by industrial capitalism and the increasingly commercialized system of
cultural production, distribution, and consumption. To some extent, the reference to power and
struggle, domination and subordinations is the mantra to sustain and legitimatize the existing cultural
studies literature (N. Graham, 1999). While avoiding the notion that Marxism and cultural studies
form immediate affinity, cultural studies still has to establish itself as a worldly vocation by coping
with the tension between the study of the text and its affiliations with institutions, classes, nations,
races, and genders, and etc. (Hall, 1999a). The representation of the Hong

Amphitheatrical spectacle in the Ancient Roman Empire performed a variety of social and political
functions. Chief among these was cultural imperialism amphitheatres and spectacles served to unite
the Roman people and replace pre Roman cultural values with distinctly Roman ones. Evidentiary
support for this function can be gleaned from a number of different sources such as architectural
remains throughout the Roman Empire, inscriptions on amphitheatres, and literary accounts of the
events surrounding these spectacles. While no evidentiary category can paint a complete picture in

Inscriptions of dedication on new amphitheatres across the Roman Empire suggest, similarly to the
architectural remains, that amphitheatres and spectacle were used as a way to assert Roman influence
in previously conquered locations. Consider the inscription on the Roman amphitheatre at Pompeii;
Gaius Quinctius Valgus, son of Gaius, and Marcus Porcius, son of Marcus, quinquennial duumvirs, for
the honor of the colony, saw to the construction of the spectacula at their own expense, and they gave
the site to the colonist in perpetuity (CIL 10.852 = ILS 5627, trans. Alison Cooley/KMC). Clearly, it
was greatly to the benefit of the Roman Empire to build these amphitheatres, so much so that Roman
officials would personally pay out of pocket for their construction. The formal nature of this carving
as a plaque on the newly constructed amphitheatre suggests that the same officials who financed the
creation of the building also financed the carving of the plaque. Thus, this inscription provides a
primary source describing the Roman perspective on amphitheatrical spectacle. It is, however, only by
combining this evidence with knowledge of when the amphitheatre was built and its location that it
becomes truly clear for what the amphitheatre was purposed. Dating of the remains place the
amphitheatre around

Persuasive Essay On The Future Of The Postal System
The United States Postal Service has been very prominent in everyone s lives, even if most people don
t realize it. Although, over the years many of our needs have changed and email rose to the top as a
new way of sending mail, much of what the USPS had used to its advantage, such as the large amount
of mail that has been sent physically, has been slowly dissipating over the last decade or so. From
2008 to 2009, the mail volume dropped by 30 billion, which is a drastic change compared to the 4 or 5
billion fluctuation between previous years (Source B). As it is evident, the postal system has changed
with our growing need for faster forms of transportation of information subsided by email. The postal
system has been extremely affected by our advances in technology and it is time that we understand
that this process was inevitable, and the USPS needs to be restructured by doing Sunday delivery, and
strategically closing branches to save money and accommodate to the needs of a changing world .
The major point of competition for the USPS would have to be email, and in some cases, other postal
services (Source E). Over the years whenever the postal service was in its prime, it kept much of our
communication constant, whether mail was being sent from person to person, or even from the
government to the citizens of the U.S. (Source F). Many have worried that without permanent record
of things such as letters, bills, and other information sent through postage, we will lose

Rabbit Proof Fence Discuss the symbolism and motifs in the Rabbit Proof Fence . What do they
represent and how do they contribute to the story? The film Rabbit Proof Fence conveys the
importance of family, belonging and country to the Aboriginal people and provides the audience with
an insight of the division between the Europeans and the Aboriginal people. The Director, Philip
Noyce displays these themes by the use of symbolism and motifs. Symbolism is the use of one object

of her face in bed fading to an undershot of the eagle in the sky, brought back memories and is

an extreme close up shot of Molly s eyes as she hears the sound of the eagle, her eyes slowly open and
then the film uses a low angle shot of the eagle flying above the girls in the sky. The audience senses
their vulnerability and the challenge that lies ahead. This is followed by a high angle shot of Molly
standing and looking at the eagle providing her with the inner strength to continue the journey home.
As they continue, there is an aerial shot of trees, the sound of an eagle, an example of diegetic sound
and the audience has a sense that the bird is guiding the girls home. The rabbit proof fence is the
central motif. It runs from North to South of Western Australia and was built to keep rabbits away
from farmland. It is very symbolic as when it was built it kept the Aboriginals in one place and
therefore shows how they were restricted in their movement, unlike the freedom of the spirit bird. It
symbolises the division between the Aboriginals and the Europeans. The girls are pictured as

28 February 2017 Coco Chanel
Coco Chanel stated In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different. Coco Chanel was born
on August 19, 1883 in Saumur France. Her birth name is Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel. Gabrielle has had
a difficult childhood. Coco s mother passed away due to suffering asthma. After her mother s death,
Chanel and two her sisters were sent to an orphanage and her two brother were sent to a farm to
become laborers. At the orphanage, Coco learned the basics of sewing. Along with learning how to
sew she also got a basic education at the orphanage. In order to make money, Gabrielle worked as a
singer in a coffee shop. That is where Gabrielle obtained her nickname Coco. This nickname stuck
with her throughout the rest of her career. In Chanel s early 20s, she got into a relationship with a
French, ex cavalry officer, and wealthy textile Étienne Balsan. He assisted her in making her dream
come true by helping her open her first fashion shop on Paris s Rue Cambon in 1910 followed by
another in the resort town of Deauville. She started selling stylish hats in her shop. Balsan financially
allowed Coco to start to follow her dreams. With Balsan s financial aid Coco ... Show more content on

Chanel was very confident. She broke all the current rules of fashion without doubting herself and
believing she would make it. Chanel also had a set vision. She knew exactly what she wanted and

women s clothing in a time period where women s clothing was very conservative. These positive
characteristics may have contributed to the fact that she did not have any failures.Putting all of these
traits together helped Coco Chanel become as successful as she

The Effects Of Global Warming On The Earth s Atmosphere...
Global warming occurs due to an increase in the average temperature of the earth s atmosphere.
Various reasons as discussed in task 3 lead to the rise in temperature around the earth. The reasons
include deforestation, burning fossil fuels, increase in human population and increase in the amount of
carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses such as methane, chlorofluorocarbons, nitrous oxide and
water vapor in the atmosphere. (Dai, 2013) Greenhouse gasses are produced when fossil fuels or wood
is burned. In other cases, when plants rot, carbon and methane are released into the atmosphere.
Global warming can be controlled through the following ways: preservation of forests, minimal use of
fossil fuels in energy production, efficient use of energy and use of low carbon or zero carbon
technology.
Conservation of forests: Forests can be preserved through prevention of deforestation and through
planting more trees. The importance of forests in controlling global warming applies where the trees
use up carbon dioxide during photosynthesis and therefore reduce the carbon dioxide concentration in
the atmosphere. Carbon, which is a component of carbon dioxide, is stored in the trees and is
necessary for tree growth. Therefore, preservation of trees ensures minimal circulation of carbon and
its products in the atmosphere. (Spies A.S. Mori, 2013) Deforestation has currently become a daily
activity and the number of trees affected is massive. Deforestation can be discouraged through

  • 2. Understanding Cultural Identity Understanding Your Cultural Identity Children begin to develop a sense of identity as individuals and as members of groups from their earliest interactions with others (McAdoo, 1993; Sheets, 1999a) (Trumbull and Pacheco 9). The very idea of being able to understand your own culture can better you as a person and give you an even deeper understanding of life. • 7. Types of Sinkholes A sinkhole, also called a swallow hole, shakehole, swallet or doline, is a crater in the ground caused by a sudden collapse of the surface layer whether it is the street, a field, a suburb, city, or other area,. The causes of sinkholes consist of karst processes such as the chemical dissolution of carbonate rocks and suffusion processes. The formation of sinkholes involves the processes of erosion. Sinkholes develop due to surface drainage or running water. Though dry places are thought to have less water, sinkholes can develop in these areas as well as long as the correct conditions come into play. They can form from human activity as well like abandoned mines, pipelines and sewers. Sinkholes are most common in states such as Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas. Places with sandstone and quartzite terrains where the rock below the land surface is limestone or any other carbonate rock that can be dissolved by ground water. When the rock below the surface layer dissolves, spaces and caverns form underground. Sometimes it can take months or even years for these caverns to form completely before the ground becomes too weak and collapses suddenly. There are two main types of sinkholes. The most dangerous type of sinkhole is the cover collapse sinkhole. This sinkhole shows up unexpectedly and can swallow cars, buildings and even people whole. Revenge and Hatred in Sylvia Plath s Daddy Essay Revenge and Hatred in Plath s Daddy The power of Plath s Daddy to threaten, shock and move the reader remains undiminished, years after it was written. To the unsuspecting reader, the experience of first reading Daddy is a confusion of discomfort, excitement and guilty pleasure, for the pleasures of revenge are said to be sweet, and this is a revenge poem of the first rank. Revenge upon whom? Father? Perhaps, more likely, upon her husband. And her aim was true, for if anything Plath wrote damaged Ted Hughes for posterity, Daddy is it. From this poem, we gather our indelible impressions of Hughes as a brute, a wife beater, a vampire, even an implied racist and murderer (if we extend the Hitler metaphor to its fullest implications) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... it literally rocked the moral fiber of the world, and we?re still reeling (if more jaded). It was a subject on fire in the public imagination at the time. Plath?s appropriation of Holocaust imagery for her own ends, which strikes so many as grossly inappropriate, can perhaps be interpreted as stemming from that initial horrified zeitgeist. Perhaps she felt she was raising consciousness and expressing solidarity of a sort. Her remarks in her interview with Peter Orr about making her poetry relevant can be looked at from such an angle. Of course, the other point of view is that she was stealing other people s real tragedy and tacking it on to her own little psychic turbulence for shock value and good visceral punch to the reader s gut. I think we must always keep in mind that Plath, to A. Alvarez, referred to this poem (and Lady Lazarus , a piece even more riddled with Holocaust imagery) as a bit of light verse. Was she being sarcastic? Reading Alvarez s memoir, I think he felt she was quite serious. So what on earth does that tell us about this poet? I do think it implies a profound self absorption and narcissism. Chuffing me off like a Jew the callousness of this poem, if one stops to think about it (and it s very hard to do so while in the poem s grip), is appalling. Its ramifications are endless where ... Cooper And Garner Cooper Garner, (2012) speak of the three R s one of them being a relationship, trusting relationships between teachers and students prime the brain for learning, activate willingness to cooperate, and encourage excellence p. 4. Securing relationships with students will allow the classroom to develop and stabilize into a learning classroom . As an educator, the focus can then be on facilitating advancement in knowledge. I currently find that the development of a respectful relationship with clinical students and new employees allows the facilitation of a conducive learning environment. Of course as discussed in Cooper Garner, (2012) I believe that it then leads to a growth mindset allowing for a more impactful learning experience. Vygotsky s theories are particularly useful in the clinical setting. For instance, for the student nurse scaffolding allows for the provision of support until a new skill is learned. Whereas, scaffolding in the orientation of a new nurse as described in Slavin, (2015) Chapter 2 is part of a concept called cognitive apprenticeship and entails one on one instruction p. 40. Another concept is that of cooperative learning this is demonstrated in the nursing simulation laboratory as students learn to develop critical thinking skills based on each other s actions and questions during simulation scenarios. In Slavin Chapter 6 the levels of processing theory are of particular interest as the more meaning or emphasis placed on details the more likely you are to store it in your long term memory. I ve seen parts of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. I liked what I saw, but I wasn t sure I wanted to have my introduction to Wright be his fifth film. Well, my willpower broke and I m happier for it. Baby Driver focuses on the eponymous Baby (Ansel Elgort), a getaway driver working for a crime boss (the now disgraced Kevin Spacey). Things get more complicated when Baby meets Debora (Lilly James), a waitress who steals his heart, and gets involved in a job with some volatile coconspirators. Of the several joys of this film, not the least of them is acting. That starts with Elgort, who is impressive as Baby. He makes him someone we instantly like, with his cool demeanor and infectious enthusiasm for music. We root for him right away, and that holds when we learn more about him and Elgort convincingly portrays those depths. As much as I liked Elgort, I probably liked James work even more. She does a lot with little to work with as Debora. Her character doesn t have much depth on the page, but James has a magnetic screen presence. She nails each scene and makes you believe her character is a real person with many dimensions, even though the movie doesn t really explore them. • 12. The Important Aspects Of Effective Nursing Communication is one of the most important aspects in effective nursing. For a nurse to be successful, communicating with patients, families, physicians, peers and ancillary departments is necessary. Communication is not only verbal with language, words and sound, but also non verbal. Non verbal behaviors such as touch, facial expressions, eye contact and movement, posture and silence make up more than half of the art of communication (Giger, 2013). The population in the United States is comprised of various cultures with different views of the meaning of non verbal communication. Understanding the views of various cultures can create a positive and healing environment for the patient, as well as increase patient and employee satisfaction (Starr Wallace, 2011). Many patients feel comforted by touch; a hand on the shoulder can help to alleviate fear in the hospital setting. Many cultures from Latin America, Spain and France are extremely affectionate and communicate through touch (Giger, 2013). These cultures often share kisses on the cheek, hugs and handshakes when greeting one another. As a nurse, I have experienced the embrace of a family from Mexico showing appreciation for taking care of their loved one. It is important to understand that other patients with different cultural backgrounds such as those from Germany and England, might find this type of physical contact invasive and inappropriate (Giger, 2013). Figurative Language In First Death Elizabeth Bishop s poem First Death in Nova Scotia follows a small girl who is introduced to the concept of death for the first time through her cousin, Arthur. Even though the narrator is just a child who is experiencing death for this first time, she is extremely perceptive of her surroundings. The details and language the girl uses to describe the situation illustrates the difficulty the girl is having coming to terms with the idea of death, while also confusing her throughout the poem. The important concepts of death, grief, and loss of innocence are conveyed by Bishop through the encounter the girl is having with death. Bishop s theme in the poem seems to be that death can be extremely sorrowful yet hard to understand and as such, people deal with these feelings in different ways, even children. The narrator, being a small child, naturally uses distractions in her surroundings and her figurative language to start to understand death at the end of the poem. Causal Mechanism War divides the countries involved into two sides: us versus them. This division allows prejudice to permeate both sides, creating racial slurs and stereotypes that define opposing sides. For example, characterizing opponents as backwards or barbaric creates the idea that the opponents population is under oppressive rule and require liberation. These slurs and stereotypes spill over to the population, who might be influenced by propaganda to favor war. The only problem is that someone has to pay back the money that they barrowed. It would be irresponsible to trust your own debt, that you knowingly signed up for, onto every tax paying American. When people sign up for college it is not like anyone forced them to take out loans or forced them to go to college in the first place. Some might say that the cost of college is so great that no person should be expected to pay back such a large sum. Yet when it comes to humans, people have trouble acknowledging that the human race, too, will have to come to an end; or as Kurzweil predicts, will have to adapt into something better in terms of evolution. However, the current state of society, in which everyone is strung on a hierarchy until the day he dies, the singularity will produce a less that favorable result. Though inevitable and imminent, the singularity will make people increasingly unhappy by enhancing the socially constructed hierarchies that separate us from free will (Singularity). Capitalism prevents us from valuing ourselves, which is why we aren t happy. In Brave New World, it is obvious that capitalistic ideals drive the society, in which their sole purpose is to consume, as they believe that [one] can t consume much if [one sits] still and [reads] books (Brave New World 50). The desire to produce, consume, and earn money at the end of it all makes us stray from the activities that bring people the most pleasure. We are so caught up in making money and getting ourselves higher on the never ending hierarchy that the idea of leisure and happiness is forgotten. • 32. A Critical Discourse Analysis Framework Essay Methodology A critical discourse analysis framework News is manufactured industrially and deeply influenced by the bureaucratic and economic structure of the media industry, by relations between the media and other industries, and by relations with authoritative apparatuses and institutions such as government. It reflects the prevailing values of a society in a particular historical context and simultaneously shapes the society in return (Fowler, 1991/2013). Although we cannot simply suggest an explicit causal relation between structurally determined material and symbolic resources and the actual cultural practices, a pure linguistic analysis may still overlook the external constraints and the effects of the cultural practices. The embryo of cultural studies finds its roots in the historical context of a social structure shaped by industrial capitalism and the increasingly commercialized system of cultural production, distribution, and consumption. To some extent, the reference to power and struggle, domination and subordinations is the mantra to sustain and legitimatize the existing cultural studies literature (N. Graham, 1999). While avoiding the notion that Marxism and cultural studies form immediate affinity, cultural studies still has to establish itself as a worldly vocation by coping with the tension between the study of the text and its affiliations with institutions, classes, nations, races, and genders, and etc. (Hall, 1999a). Inscriptions of dedication on new amphitheatres across the Roman Empire suggest, similarly to the architectural remains, that amphitheatres and spectacle were used as a way to assert Roman influence in previously conquered locations. The formal nature of this carving as a plaque on the newly constructed amphitheatre suggests that the same officials who financed the creation of the building also financed the carving of the plaque. Thus, this inscription provides a primary source describing the Roman perspective on amphitheatrical spectacle. Although, over the years many of our needs have changed and email rose to the top as a new way of sending mail, much of what the USPS had used to its advantage, such as the large amount of mail that has been sent physically, has been slowly dissipating over the last decade or so. The Director, Philip Noyce displays these themes by the use of symbolism and motifs. Again, when the girls are struggling on their long journey home and they collapse, Noyce uses an extreme close up shot of Molly s eyes as she hears the sound of the eagle, her eyes slowly open and then the film uses a low angle shot of the eagle flying above the girls in the sky. The rabbit proof fence is the central motif. It runs from North to South of Western Australia and was built to keep rabbits away from farmland. The reasons include deforestation, burning fossil fuels, increase in human population and increase in the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses such as methane, chlorofluorocarbons, nitrous oxide and water vapor in the atmosphere. (Dai, 2013) Greenhouse gasses are produced when fossil fuels or wood is burned. In other cases, when plants rot, carbon and methane are released into the atmosphere. Global warming can be controlled through the following ways: preservation of forests, minimal use of fossil fuels in energy production, efficient use of energy and use of low carbon or zero carbon technology. Conservation of forests: Forests can be preserved through prevention of deforestation and through planting more trees. The importance of forests in controlling global warming applies where the trees use up carbon dioxide during photosynthesis and therefore reduce the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere. Carbon, which is a component of carbon dioxide, is stored in the trees and is necessary for tree growth. Therefore, preservation of trees ensures minimal circulation of carbon and its products in the atmosphere. (Spies A.S. Mori, 2013) Deforestation has currently become a daily activity and the number of trees affected is massive. Deforestation can be discouraged through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
