Technology And Its Effect On Society
Technology is the sum of the ways in which social groups provide themselves with the material
objects of their civilization. ( Technology ) In addition, technology has become a basic necessity
for people all around the world. Not only does technology have positive effects on how people
function in the world, but it also has many negative effects. On a similar topic, technology has
improved the way we live tremendously, but people have become extremely dependent on it, almost
to the point to where they could not live without it. The book The Machine Stopscould be
accurately compared to the way people around the world live their lives. For example, In The
Machine Stops their society became so dependent on technology, that when technology died, the
people died along with it. While the civilization society described in The Machine Stops and the
civilization society today can be compared through a discussion of the technology to each
communication, entertainment, transportation, and daily life, both civilizations share the potential
danger of technology controlled. The first major way people depend on technology is through
communication. In The Machine Stops no one ever came in contact with anyone else. An
example as to how they were able to do this is through video chat. People in The Machine Stops
only communicated with one another through video chat much like how people living in today s
world use FaceTime. FaceTime allows people to talk face to face through a

Descriptive Essay About Algeria
Algeria Algeria, a country in northern Africa, is where my family comes from. Specifically, I am
a Berber from the northern part of Algeria. My family originate from turkey and Saudi Arabia but
they have settled down in Algeria for a very long time. Many people misconstrue the true meaning
of a Berber and assume Algerians are just Arabs who cannot speak proper Arabic. However, Berber
is a completely different language than Arabic. Algeria has many different languages and dialects;
almost every different region has its own dialect. In addition, every region has its own ethnicities,
traditions and customs. Algeria is a very diverse and populated country with fascinating traditions
and languages; with peculiar alphabets such as Tifinagh. Berbers are the indigenous people of
Algeria. Berber and Tamazight were the original languages, which everyone used, and it had various

This is also a completely different and unique language with its own vocabulary and dialectal

Leaving the Sahara and moving back up north, there are yet a range of other languages and
different dialects of Berber or Tamazight. The most popular language in the northern, Berber
province is Kabyle, which is the language my ancestors spoke for many years. Kabyle was one of
the languages I acquired growing up since both my parents used it to communicate with my
grandmother. Since not everyone knows these languages, the appearance and different traditional
clothes that are unique to each area make it easier to identify all these different people and cultures
in Algeria, and which language to use to make communication easier and more flexible. There are
50 different states in Algeria and every single one has its own traditional clothing. That makes the
country extremely diverse and

New United Motor Manufacturing Incorporated, the 1984 joint venture between Toyota and
General Motors, was by all accounts a manufacturing success. NUMMI s effectiveness was
evidenced by the drastic change in output quality, employee morale, and overall cost but while
these great outcomes were recognized by GM, they were hardly leveraged. What supported these
results were exactly the factors that radically set NUMMI apart from the rest of the GM family.
Ultimately, GM s failure to adapt the plant s success was the result of a prideful conglomerate
embodying a competitive internal structure and divisive culture so strong that it was unable to fully
recognize and adapt to the fundamentally different NUMMI model. The culturewithin the broader
General Motors, both at corporate and factory level, was one of self accomplishment. This praised
the individual and unit, and neglected how teams of units might work together to achieve
something greater. As a result, when faced with the opportunity to adapt to the Japanese style,
backlash ensued not only at plant level, but higher in the chain of command, too. NPR s Frank

Disease, High Blood Cholesterol And Brain Diseases
Diseases or health conditions are more so present in certain familiars than in others. Some are
developed through environmental factors, lifestyle, genetics, and overall health wellness. Diseases
can take different forms and occur at different stages of life. They can affect certain ages and
genders. Through education and proper medical procedures most of them could be prevented and
treated. The diseases that will be discussed further are: Hashimoto s disease, high blood cholesterol,
and brain diseases such as an aneurysm a stroke.
Hashimoto s disease or also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis is directly correlated to the
thyroid gland: meaning that it is autoimmune deficiency disease. The thyroid is apart of the

The causes of this Hashimoto s are still unknown; some doctors believe its origin is through the
trigger of a virus or infection, while others assume that it is genetics flaws are involved.
Unfortunately there are no specific preventative measures that could avoid this disease. However,
knowing the symptoms ahead of time has an advantage. The sooner you recognize and catch this
disease the sooner treatment can be applicable. This could be also known as primary prevention,
being educated about the disease and how it can affect ones life.
Cholesterol s literal definition is a waxy, fat like substance that s found in all cells of the body.

Disadvantages Of Securitization
As securitization seems to be a lucrative way for banks to not only enhance liquidity and diversify
risk but also improves their performance considerable incentive problems occurred during the
turmoil and among the different parties. Those incentive problems led to information asymmetries
and moral hazard among the involved stakeholders .As the Bank/Originator creates reference pool
sells them to the bankruptcy remote trust (such as Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac) Bankruptcy remote
trust buys reference pool and securitizes it sells them to the capital market where potential investors
exists to purchase securities purchase of securities by investors 6 gap between mortgageoriginators
and investors increases, it reduces the incentives for lenders to screen mortgage applicants
thoroughly. During the turmoil banks had more and better information about the Mortgage Backed
Securities and their performance value in contrast to third parties as they knew more about the
mortgage applicant and the underlying mortgage loan.As bank incentives are to issue more
mortgage loans and then sell them to bankruptcy remote trusts to securitize them, they did not bear

Therefore, the process of transfer of the receivables from the originator to the SPV involves an
outlay on account of stamp duty, which can make securitization commercially unviable in several
states. If the securitized instrument were issued as evidencing indebtedness, it would be in the form
of a debenture or bond subject to stamp duty. On the other hand, if the instrument is structured as a
Pass Through Certificate (PTC) that merely evidences title to the receivables, then such an
instrument would not attract stamp duty, as it is not an instrument provided for specifically in the

Chapter five of Crispin Sartwell s Six Names of Beauty discuss the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi
sabi. Sartwell begins the chapter by describing a harmonica that he started playing at the age of
fourteen. During the recount, which included a detailed description of an old CD, Sartwell
shows an evident appreciation for the aged item and it s imperfection. The damage on its surface
its crackles and skips traces my intense relation to it, and gives it a kind of old time sounding
authenticity. His description of an old blues CD and the evident appreciation for the crackles and

in Japanese aesthetics, Sartwell describes the language as... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

An appreciation of wabi is an affirmation of the world and a certain sort of refusal of its

Sabi, meaning loneliness , refers to the solitude as both a state of aloneness in persons and a s a
spareness of objects. It can also be considered as a subjective state that is appropriate to the

quality of stillness and solitude, a melancholy that is one of the basic human responses to and

Wabi sabi is an aesthetic of poverty and loneliness, imperfection and austerity, affirmation and
melancholy. It is the beauty of the withered, weathered, tarnished, scarred, intimate, coarse,
earthly, evanescent, tentative, ephemeral. It is a broken earthenware in contrast to a Ming vase,
a branch of autumn leaves to a dozen roses, a lined and bent old woman in contrast to a model, a
mature love as opposed to an infatuation, a bare wall with peeling paint in contrast to a wall hung

The fifties proved to be a difficult time for baseball. As America was busy changing baseball
remained the same. The middle class began to move out of the city to the suburbs, away from
the major league ball fields. Therefore, leaving behind low income mostly black families, which
did not bring much profit to the ballfields. The fields and parking lots were too small to bring
any real profit to the teams as well, and many whites were too scared to venture into these
neighborhoods to even watch a game. In addition, television became increasingly popular in the

The Problem Of Self State
Conscious state according to dictionary.com is being aware of one s own existence these may
involve thoughts, sensations (images, aches, pain, visual, auditory and tactual sensation etc.).
Smart refuses to admit to the fact that sensations are irreducibly psychical because of Occam s
razor (which suggests that such matters should not even be put into consideration). He affirms
there is no philosophical argument that compels us to be dualist, he writes I am in pain is a
genuine report, and that what it reports is an irreducibly psychical something (Adler and Elgin
384). From this context he believes that by claiming one is in pain one is reporting something,

we should also involve conscious state as well. He thinks of sensations as dispositions towards a
certain types of stimulus/temptation. He reduced behaviours to dispositions and he classified them
as being brain processes an example he gives an example of New Zealanders and the English who
both refer to Venus when one group refers to it as Morning Star and the other as Evening Star his
aims is to show that sensations may be similar but with different physical phenomenon. For
example two people may be identical in their appearances but might have different properties. The
question might be asked, that even if sensations are identical with brain processes, are there not
introspected non physical properties of sensations that are not identical with properties of brain
processes? (Identity theory) . To dispel this thought smart adopts topic neutral a narrower sense of
being neutral to dualism and physicalism (Identity theory). If sensations are caused by physical
/material things for example light the question based on this belief is whether sensations are
material or immaterial from the given example above (Identity theory). Putnam admits to a lot of
claims made by Smart, they both share similar views on identifying pain and other mental states
with brain processes. Putman begins by disagreeing with philosophers who maintain that pain states
are brain states, and he calls this claim unintelligible. He goes

which the characters are responsible for enabling their imagination to dominate their perception of

that is used in the books in the portrayal of emotions, or lack of, which also showed the tension

A Brief Note On Mechanical Engineering And Engineering
When taking a look at the world today, it is concluded that it has now been taken over by
engineers. With new inventions being innovated day by day, the world has been improved
magnificently with the help of engineers. Although there is no way to specifically define
someone as a leader, with all of the new inventions that are created by engineers daily they can
definitely be classified as leaders and creators of todays world. In almost every corner of this earth,
there is some sort of engineeringinvolved. Know as some of the smartest people in the world, they

Mechanical Engineers
Mechanical engineering is one of the types of engineering that can be found almost everywhere.
For example, automobiles, it is nearly impossible to stay away from them as they are found
almost everywhere. Mechanical engineers work on the structure, the designs and re designs of

Summary Of Ethos Pathos Logos By Maggie Jackson
What are some ways you could persuade your reader to your opinion? One way is by using logos,
pathos, and ethos. What are logos, pathos, and ethos? Those three terms are modes of persuasion
used to convince your audience. In the essay Distracted: The Erosion of Attention and The Coming
Dark Age by Maggie Jackson. Maggie used those three concepts to help her argument because she
hooks the reader by convincing the audience, making the audience feel what she felt and lastly
using logic or reason.
Authors typically use pathos to make their reader feel what the author wants them to feel. For
example, Maggie says It s crucial that we better understand how our new high tech tools, from

How Can We Deal with the Problem of Illegal Immigration Essay
How Can We Deal With The Problem Of Illegal Immigration?
Being here as an illegal immigrant is a huge problem. Tax payer s money pays for their medical
bills, the jails, and deportation back to where they came from. Our jobs and identities are being
taken away as well. Coming to the United States is seen as an advantage to get ahead in life for
most other countries. When they take advantage of breaking the system it effects the citizens more
so than it does them. There are several people who came here and worked hard to get their
citizenship the legal way. When it seems the government is letting them get away with breaking the
law it attracts more people to come here illegally.
Illegal immigration refers to the action of people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, research indicates that the majority of the illegal immigrants go to their chosen
destinations for the primarily economic and personal reasons, such as search for jobs opportunities
and family reunification. It thus implies that by understanding the reasons as to why these people
migrate illegally, the respective states may come up with executable measures to ensure that illegal
immigration is no more. The best option for solving the issue of illegal immigration in an effective
manner is by removing the incentives that draw the people into other states without following the
recommended legal procedures (Hoffmeier, 2009).
At first, the governments experiencing cases of illegal immigration need to enforce their laws of
immigration and to crack down on those employers that hire illegal aliens. The governments
should decide to make it a felony act for employing people without undergoing the proper
channels of immigration and checking the applicant s background (Gaines Kappeler, 2011). The
only way of making illegal immigrants leave the countries under which they reside illegally is by
making life difficult for them to keep on leaving there. For example, the governments should opt to
ignore granting driver s licenses, public schooling opportunities, food stamps and permanent
employment to the people that reside in the states illegally. Choosing this option is essential
because it is very hard to track and trace

Lowering The Legal Drinking Age
As we know, the United States has the highest drinking age in the world. By 1988 the entire U.S
had adopted the Federal Uniform Drinking Age Act, which set the drinking age to twenty one.
However, in 1920 the United States banned the sale, production, importation, and transportation
of alcohol. This era known as the Prohibition sparked the popularity of hidden underground bars
and events. The Prohibition Era is a prime example of how people did anything to intake alcohol
and eventually this led to the act of doing illegal things. It is obvious to say that many people in
the 1920 s were going against the law and were consuming alcohol. Today, this age seems to be a
topic of controversy and debate. Many countries have established their drinking age to eighteen and
younger. To many people believe that the idea of lowering the legal drinking agein the United States
seems great. However, others believe that this idea may bring upon more conflict and tragedy. The
drinking age should not be lowered and should stay at the uniform drinking age of twenty one.
Ruth C. Engs, a professor at Indiana University, supports the idea that the drinking age should be
lowered and should allow young adults to drink in controlled environments. She firmly believes
that by lowering the drinking age will result in a decrease in irresponsible drinking that can lead to
devastation. In opposition, Honor Whiteman states that the drinking age should be kept where it is
because it saves

The Importance Of America s Unalienable Rights In The...
Government has the capability to alter the United States to meet their standards. They change the
United States in several ways, but what they cannot change and take full control over are
Americans unalienable rights. Unalienable rights have also been known as God given rights,
which means that they cannot be given or taken away by the government. In The Declaration of
Independence by Thomas Jefferson, he takes John Locke s theory of live, liberty, and the pursuit
of happiness to express how unalienable rights gives Americans the chance to live their lives
freely. Americans live their lives however they want to. They have the ability to expresses
themselves, because unalienable rights gives them that opportunity as long as ...they do not
interfere with the liberty of others (The Declaration 2). People take advantage of this freedom and
express themselves through the choices they make. America s young adults take advantage how
they live to show people another way living. They choose to dress in different styles, and they may
alter their bodies by getting piercing and tattoos to represents themselves. On the other hand other

Varsity Player Comparison
Our study, The Comparison between the Holistic Development of Engineering Varsity Players and
Engineering Non Varsity Players of Silliman University, aims to compare the said varsity and non
varsity students in terms of their mental health, time management, physical health and social health
and aims to conclude that the varsity players are holistically well developed than the latter. Our
conclusion is proved by the following facts gathered by interviewing two credible people and
giving questionnaires to 617 respondents (60% of the total population=1029) wherein we only
received 603 answered survey questionnaires for the non varsity players and a complete set of 23

The survey proved that varsity players are better in coping up for upcoming tests because they
are able to maximize their time for studying. They are also able to balance their leisure time
outside the training walls. LHSAA s news (2011) said, Being a varsity player opens doors and
preparation for life because participating in a college sport prepares you for life after graduation
and can often open doors enabling you participate in the professional world. The social networks
that are developed through athletics and the team building skills learned while playing a college
sport can give college athletes a head start in the business world. Having been a good leader or a
good team player in college prepares you for a professional setting and makes for an attractive
potential employee, not to mention the time management skills learned as well. It is noted that
increasingly, the business world is focusing on creating a team environment in the workplace
where people work together effectively toward a common goal and a college athlete, who has
practiced this skill for years, could potentially be an ideal candidate. Overall, there is an
overwhelming amount of positive impact that the experience of being a college athlete rewards.

this organization has been such a positive influence in my life. I have been an active member of

The most unusual thing I ve learnt about the culture I studied were the miscellaneous outdoor

Tom Robinson s Injustice
Tom Robinson, Bob Ewell and the Injustice of Blacks
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch states: The evil assumption that all Negroes lie, that all
Negroes are basically immoral beings, that all Negro men are not to be trusted around our
women... Which, gentlemen, we know is in itself a lie as black as Tom Robinson s skin (pg.232).
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is the story of a lawyer s two children growing up in
Maycomb, Alabama to a world that seems more and more corrupt to them. The side plot of the
Tom Robinson v. Ewell family case highlights some of the more corrupt and wicked elements of
the general Maycomb views. Thus, Tom Robinson and Bob Ewell show the prejudice between
whites and blacks.

The way each character acts shows how unknowing and blind the residents of Maycomb are to
the injustice they create. Tom is hard working, respectable and knows and accepts his place in
society, even if it s a place where Tom is treated as if he didn t deserve to live. This is displayed
when Mr. Link Deas interrupts the court to say That boy s worked for me eight years an I ain t
had one speck o trouble outta him. Not a speck (pg.222). Bob Ewell, on the other hand, is
disorderly, rude, vengeful and lazy, as shown when, according to Ms. Stephanie Crawford, Bob
Ewell stopped Atticus on the post office corner, spat in his face, and told him he d get him if it
took him the rest of his life (pg.247). Because Tom Robinson and Bob Ewell are isolated
differently, they each have differing workloads in community. Bob Ewell gets to live a life
where he is allowed to hunt off season and, as Atticus Finch puts it, It s certainly bad, but when a
man spends his relief checks on green whiskey his children have a way of crying from hunger
pains. (pg.34) Tom however, proves his worth in the community, even though he is still viewed
lower in the community than Bob Ewell. Tom s kindness against hatred is shown in when he

What Is The Connection Between A Tale Of Television And...
Technology consumes the society Bradbury has created, and determines the behavior of the
community he has created. The television consumes Mildred along with every other dependent
conformist in their time. The people are so absorbed by the television that the families portrayed
through the shows, that they are psychologically engulfed into the televisionfamilies. Mildred even
displays this when Bradbury writes, Will you turn the parlor off? He asked. That s my family. Will
you turn it off for a sick man? I ll turn it down. (Bradbury 49) MIldred s connections to her
fabricated family is more important than her actual family. The subjugation of the television
families is such a convoluted concept. This immense confusion is only sensibly comparable to one
character, Chief Beatty. Beatty s knowledge of literature is used to disprove the importance of
literature to others. He is willing to defend the equalization of society while he is educated himself,
and rejects the use of books as weapons while reading them whenever he pleases. Due to these
contradicting concepts in his life, Beatty is the most convoluted and mysterious character in the
novel.
The peculiar connection of the society Bradbury creates to television and technology is the leading
cause for the conformist society. Communication has lost every sense of its meaning. The little
communication present is with a fake family on a television. Parlors have transformed into group
television watching, and the

Persuasive Essay On Prison Reform
Today, it seems almost incomprehensible that so many people with serious mental illnesses reside
in prisons instead of receiving treatment. Over a century and a half ago, reform advocates like
Dorothea Dix campaigned for prison reform, urging lawmakers to house the mentally ill in hospitals
rather than in prisons. The efforts undertaken by Dix and other like minded reformers were
successful: from around 1870 to 1970, most of the United States mentally ill population was housed
in hospitals rather than in prisons. Considering reformers made great strides in improving this
situation over a century and a half ago. Granted, mental hospitals in the late 19th and early 20th
century were often badly run and critically flawed, but rather than pushing for reform of these
hospitals, many politicians lobbied for them to close their doors, switching instead to a community
based system for treating the mentally ill. Although deinstitutionalization was originally understood
as a humane way to offer more suitable services to the mentally ill in community based settings,
some politicians seized upon it as a way to save money by shutting down institutions without
providing any meaningful treatment alternatives. This callousness has created a one way road to
prisonfor massive numbers of impaired individuals and the inhumane warehousing of thousands of
mentally ill people. Nevertheless, there are things that can be done to lower the rate mentally ill
persons are being incarcerated. Such

The Problem Of Genetically Modified Organisms ( Gmo ) May...
Humans do some amazing things. The leading force behind our success is innovation. Science s
many advantages make life easier but also include drawbacks. The technology to solve many
problems exists, but our ability to create a solution does not necessarily mean we should. Most
problems of these problems can be fixed, but what is the cost? World hunger is an issue that
many people wish they could solve. It seemed impossible in the past, but modern technology has
provided a possible solution. Given the chance, would you put an end to hunger in this world?
Most people would answer yes but still wonder how this is possible. Genetically modified
organisms (GMO) may be a viable option. These foods are bigger and quickly produced. They
have a higher resistance to insect attacks and can grow in desolate terrains. They appear to be the
solution to one of society s biggest problems, but the side effects are huge. These poorly
understood frankenfoods cause numerous symptoms, but they are still sold to the public. While
GMOs appear beneficial, they have ill effects and must be regulated. Native American tribes
started selectively breeding maize more than 10,000 years ago. Certain seeds were easier to grind,
tasted better, and produced bigger plants. Ancient farmers planted the more desirable seeds for the
next year s harvest. The versatile seeds developed the ability to grow in poor conditions which
proved convenient. Other benefits included increased starch production, shorter

stage for basic changes in the program. The action research model shown in Figure 1 closely
follows Lewin s repetitive cycle of planning, action, and measuring results. It also illustrates
other aspects of Lewin s general model of change. As indicated in the diagram, the planning
stage is a period of unfreezing, or problem awareness. The action stage is a period of changing,
that is, trying out new forms of behavior in an effort to understand and cope with the system s
problems. (There is inevitable overlap between the stages, since the boundaries are not clear cut
and cannot be in a continuous process). The results stage is a period of refreezing, in which new
behaviors are tried out on the job and, if successful and reinforcing, become a part of the system s
repertoire of problem solving behavior.Action research is problem centered, client centered, and
action oriented. It involves the client system in a diagnostic, active learning, problem finding, and
problem solving process. Data are not simply returned in the form of a written report but

The Treaty Of Berlin Conference Essay
From the mid 1400s to the mid 1700s, Europe established many trade ports in Africa, but no
colonization actually took place, and the few colonies that did exist were along the coastline. In the
last half of the 19th century, this all began to change. European countries began to invade Africa s
interior. By 1870, about 10% of Africawas under European control, and in just 20 short years, this
number grew to almost 90%. Every European country wanted a slice of Africa, and this became
known as the scramble for Africa. To avoid war between the European countries, The Berlin
Conference was held from 1884 1885. This allowed the Europeans to carve Africa into colonies.
As a direct result of this, the political and economic ways of Africa were drastically changed for
many years to come.
During The Berlin Conference, the Treaty of Berlin was drafted. This document laid out the
ground work for how Africa would be divided among Europe. The conference lasted until
February 26, 1885 this was a time when the great powers of most of Western Europe argued over
setting the boundaries for how they should divide Africa . Over fourteen countries were
represented when the conference began on November 15, 1884, and by the end, Africa was
divided into about fifty countries . Otto von Bismark, chancellor of the German Empire, was in
charge of settling the subdivision of Africa between the European countries . His main goal was to

Comparing The Pedestrian And The Flying Machine
Ray Bradbury was a science fiction author who has written many stories throughout the 1940s
late 2000s. And to go along with those books he s made short stories. And two of which have
similar ideas or symbolism of his personal thoughts. And they are The Pedestrian and The Flying
Machine . The Pedestrian is a story about a man who is walking at night. He would be
considered normal for us but in this future society of 2053, he is very different. And so he is
arrested for just walking. The rest is just interpretation or theories. The Flying Machine takes place

Research Paper On Hopf Bifurcation
Abstract. In this paper, a classical model describing a food web in a chemostat involving three
species competing for non reproducing, growth rate limiting nutrient in which one of the
competitors predates on one of the other competitors is considered. Quantitative analyses of non

The Factors Influencing Human Behaviour Outside Of Other...
Animals are one of the top factors influencing human behavior outside of other non human animals.
The interactions that occur between people and non human animals, particularly in the Appalachian
region, has led to profound changes both on the local community. The most significant interaction
to take place and has influenced the area drastically is domestication. Four types of domestication at
the forefront of Appalachian cultureare livestock, blood sports, pet keeping, and animal s prevalence
in oral folklore. The introduction of domestication previous to and after the Neolithic Revolution
has harbored new relationships between humans and animals that have altered the mountain face,
culture, and economy of the Appalachian region.
The most prevalent human animal interaction to be observed and widely practiced in the
Appalachian Mountains is the keeping of domesticated animals. The region was widely used as
hunting and gathering land previous to colonial expansion. Animals were not domesticated by
Native Americans their animism, or the belief that all organisms and inanimate objects possess a
soul ( Constructing Animals ). However, it was not until the Neolithic Revolution reached the
Appalachians that sustainable agriculture became a standard way to obtain food. In doing so
domesticated animals, particularly livestock, became common in the mountains. Hogs cattle, and
chickens were kept on farms to allow for easier access to meat, dairy, and eggs. Consequently, when

Effects Of Pollution And Environmental Degradation
Pollution and Environmental Degradation are things that the large majority of humans
contributes to some small or large way on the daily. Whether it is our mode of transportation,
throwing a piece of trash on the ground, buying products made from trees, and to be perfectly
honest the concentration in which we live, by which I mean the proximity of the average
residents in which we reside. These all seem like regular everyday things that are just normal.
But in the past things like these were so beyond the norm that they would seem alien and
impossible. The first matter that I pointed out, our mode of transportation, differs from person to
person. There are those that have decided to either not use any fossil fuel burning vehicular
modes of transportation, such as walking and riding bikes; while others have decided to greatly
decrease their ecological footprint by using various forms of carpooling, whether it being literal
carpooling with friends or coworkers, or taking modes of mass transportation such as buses and
subways or underground railways. According to a survey 91% of people drive to work in their
personal vehicles; and 204 million personal vehicles are regularly used. And though not everyone
throws their trash directly on to the ground, and most that do don t do it completely intentionally. I
do have to say that a large amount of Americans do not take the time to make sure that their trash
and garbage is disposed of properly. Some do not invest in having both

Decision Of Philadelphia The Constitutional Convention Of...
In the book Decision in Philadelphia the Constitutional Convention of 1787 by Christopher Collier
and James Collier present an exclusive glance at the creating of the Constitution and the events that
made the Constitution the way people know it today. Christopher and James Collier begin with
historical events that led up to Constitutional creation and a brief summation of the events that were
taking place in the country during that time frame. The background that they give provides a good
base for the information and allows the reader to see things through the eyes of someone living in
the time. During that period, there were many challenges facing America at the time that would
have collision on the constitutional convention and the outcomes that would shape the country.
One of them being that there was very poor transportation routes and that adversely affected
communications. For example the authors quote The few interstate roads that existed were
frequently nothing more than mile upon mile of mud wallow, cut by hundreds of streams, creeks,
and rivers, most of which were unbridged, so they had to be forded, or crossed by ferry (Collier,
1986, p.14). As a result, due to a lack of this foundation it was very challenging and time
consuming for the citizens with travel and communication and diversity was usually unfamiliar to
people. At the time people also faced challenges such as the country was divided by religion, ethics,
language differences, and majorly economic

Leadership Failures in Black Hearts by Jim Frederick Essay
The book Black Hearts by Jim Frederick is an in depth narrative about the 1st platoon, Bravo
Company 1 502nd Infantry 101st Airborne Division deployed to Iraq in 2005. The leadership
failures documented in this book range all the way from the general officer level down to the
lowest private. LT general Ricardo Sanchez failed to understand the climate his command group
was entering as they were deployed into Iraq. From then on the entire leadership failures continued
to compound upon each other with improper time to plan. It is customary to have a six month lead
time to have a proper battle hand off when preparing to take over an AO from another unit. To
compound this problem, the entire time the 502nd was in pre deployment training, they... Show

Among these leaders was Bravo Company s 1st platoon s SFC Robert Gallagher. The platoon
endured terrible living conditions including no running water and filthy living space. These
inadequate living conditions must be met with some relaxation on the standards they were
expected to follow. Company leadership viewed this as a bribe to keep the soldiers in high
spirits. In reality, they set the stage for the erosion of the morals the enlisted soldiers are
supposed to possess. While the morals were being chipped away, so was the original plan the
battalion had hoped to follow. Fragmentation orders became a pseudo standard for the boys of
Bravo Company. What had originally started as short term overnight patrol bases turned into
fortified traffic control points with the exception of any form of fortification other than in notion
only. Despite the fact that platoon level leadership requested for supplies they were repeatedly
turned down. A major breakdown in the communication between the leadership created a loss in
faith in the higher leadership for the lower enlisted soldiers on the ground. Very soon into
deployment, Bravo Company began to experience contact with unseen enemy forces. The enemy
was able to engage and plant IED s and cause casualties while remaining elusive. After the first few
casualties within the company, the mission to start set up traffic control points was to begin. While
conducting patrols down the road time and time

My Duty For Volunteering At Virginia Commonwealth...
Over the course of a month, I dedicated time to volunteer with agencies that focus on providing safe

stopping/preventing child abuse in homes. This agency teams with many different agencies around
Richmond to help parents and children coop and learn way to avoid situations of abuse. My duty
for volunteering was teaming with Virginia Commonwealth UniversityHealth Services and making
SCAN a known organization throughout Richmond community. VCU threw a wellness block party
that included many different health services but also gave members of the community to learn and
seek help with many different organizations that were there promoting their business or
organization. I sat with one other girland passed out flyers and contact information to those who
were interested in the organizations. I explained to individuals what the program was about and the
benefits of the program. I had one particular interaction with this young mother who explained she
was in a situation where children were being abused and the authorities were notified and now she s
seeking counseling for her and the children involved. I and the other young lady volunteering with
me were able to give her information on the program and also contact numbers to individuals that
could help her situation. This young woman was very grateful and happy she found an organization
that could assist her with her situation. From this

Humorous Decisions
In a moment of insanity, in a single second, in a single mistake, a decision that you make in a
moment could all change the course of the next few months of your life. I was in my car, my
tears fogging up the window of my mom s blue Honda Pilot, the tension clogging up the air. I
can feel my sweat and tears dripping down my face, more tears than I have had in awhile. It feels
different. I began to wonder why the tears came down this much. The only thing I could hear was
the faint radio, which my mom had turned down, my face is pressed against that window looking
into the distance, hoping for a miracle. I could see the sadness of my mom s eyes looking back at
me every few seconds. Those seconds ticking into minutes, all of them in which... Show more

Why , I asked myself, Why did I lie to myself, to my mom that I was okay when I knew from the
start that I wasn t? This question stayed with me, but it did not take me a long time to know the
answer to this question. I knew I did it for myself, I did it because I wanted myself to be fine. I
did it because I could not accept the fact that I wasn t fine. I was at such a low point that I would
do anything to get out of my cage of devastation, even lie to myself and everyone around me. At
the exact moment I knew I was not okay, I wanted to make sure that everyone around me thought
I was okay and maybe, just maybe by telling myself and everyone else that I was okay my wish
of being okay would come true. However, by telling myself that I was fine, everything became

Commedia Dell Arte Research Paper
The Influence of Commedia Dell arte on Le Barbier de SГ©ville ou la PrГ©caution inutile and Il
Barbieri di Siviglia
Introduction
Commedia dell arte played a crucial role in the history of Western theater, its underlying satire
and irony ultimately shaping the development of comedy on the dramatic as well as the lyric
stages, (Fisher 17). This paper will discuss, first, commedia dell arte s satirical performances, their
circumstances, and their original audience, and tell how this theatrical form became well known
throughout Western Europe. It then will discuss two enduring popular stage works: Sterbini and
Rossini s opera buffa Il Barbieri di Siviglia, and Beaumarchais s satirical comedy Le Barbier de

Furthermore,.Moliere had embedded the scenario in a much more complex story, one with many
players and plot talk worthy of romantic comedy, Beaumarchais, however, adopted the entire

being incognito, creating a straight comedic satire. He wrote, As the play opened, an old man, in
love with his ward, arranges to marry her the next day. A young suitor, who is cleverer than he,

Negative Effects Of Technology
The effects of technology usage have long been a topic of debate, with the negative
consequences often being brought up. Authors such as Robert Samuels, Alison Gopnik, Nicholas
Carr, Gary Small and Vorgan Gigi have all addressed this topic in their own articles. In Samuels
Breaking Down Borders: How Technology Transforms the Private and Public Realms, he
discusses the creation of private bubbles in public spaces due to technology, and the consequent
alienation of others. Diagnosing the Digital Revolution by Gopnik argues that the habits that tech
users have today have always existed, while Carr s Is Google Making Us Stupid? states that
technology is actively changing the way humans think. Meet Your iBrain by Gigi and Small covers
how technology affects brains and alters them. This paper will use the articles and an interview
with a peer to analyze the perceived negative effects of using technology, particularly worse
memory, shorter attention span, exacerbation of bad habits, and shifting emotions.
The most noticeable effect of technology usage is a shortage of memory; not as in computer
memory, but human memory. With Google constantly at people s fingertips, it s easy to look up
information rather than memorize it. Carr cites in his article that tech users cease to exercise their
memory and become forgetful, instead of relying on the internet to quickly search for facts without
having to commit them to memory (7). He also states that humans are losing the capacity to deep
read and cannot unearth meaning in articles the way that they used to in the time of the printing
press and less evolved pieces of technology (3). In Gigi and Small s article, they mention that the
prefrontal cortex, or the area in the brain that handles short term memory, could be altered by
technology usage (4). However, Kristina Konidaris, a student who uses multiple technological
devices daily, states that the technology does not have a profound impact on her memory. Instead,
she states that her memory is more affected by her interest in the subject and her feelings rather
than the technology used, although sometimes it may be easier to remember things she has
handwritten rather than typed. Also included in Gigi and Small s

So rather than immediately displacing the printed codex, the advent of the digital book meant
that the physical book could now flourish as never before. At the same time this change prepared
the ground for a decisive future shift towards electronic reading. Dawn of the e Book The
electronic book (e book), existing as a virtual entity stored in a digital file, began to emerge in its
own right in the last years of the twentieth century. Like many new technologies it suffered from
technical teething troubles, ineffective or inappropriate marketing, commercial rivalries that
slowed its progress, and initial public scepticism or indifference. Gradually however the
electronic book became capable of being read from an increasing variety of devices, and its vast
potential began to be more widely understood. It became clear that the e book would represent
the next leap forward in the onward march of the book. While it can simply represent traditional
texts it can also become a layered and interactive multimedia experience. Indeed the book of the
future could even be spontaneously assembled from multiple sources for specific educational or
entertainment purposes, by a single reader or group. The e book therefore holds the promise of
adding an unprecedented degree of flexibility to the concept of the book. The book is one of

Instead, a young peasant woman with no special traits except for a beautiful voice, caught the
eye of Aphrodite herself. Aphrodite, who had been watching the youngling for the simple
beauty of her voice, wondered if she was her child, or a grandchild, and one day approaced the
young woman. The young woman s name was Catalina, and was curious about the goddess who
stood before her. She respectfully bowed. Catalina was selfless for everything except for one
thing her beauty. She wished to be the prettiest woman in the world. Aphrodite sensed this and
devised a plan. If you collect me an apple of immortality from the Hesperides, then I shall grant
you eternal beauty. Be warned: If you are to fall in love on this journey, then you will not be
granted this, Aphrodite warned, but Catalina shook her head, desperate. So, she venturered far
and wide to find the Garden of the Hesperides. One day, after many days of veturing, she found
it, and only barely made it past Ladon. She snagged an apple and ran, only to hear someone
screaming and grunting in pain. She eventually found Atlas, the titan cursed to hold up the sky.
She grabbed a golden cup and squeezed the golden apple s insides nto the cup, mixing it into he
water. She poured it into Atlas wounds and gave him the rest to drink, healing him efficiently. He
drank it, and in the process, Catalina fell in love with the man. Aphrodite appeared, and shamed
her for falling in love, as she would no longer have the gift of beauty. I don t care, as long as I may
stay here with my love forever, Catalina said, amd Aphrodite smiled. You passed the test. grant you

  • 2. Technology And Its Effect On Society Technology is the sum of the ways in which social groups provide themselves with the material objects of their civilization. ( Technology ) In addition, technology has become a basic necessity for people all around the world. Not only does technology have positive effects on how people function in the world, but it also has many negative effects. On a similar topic, technology has improved the way we live tremendously, but people have become extremely dependent on it, almost to the point to where they could not live without it. The book The Machine Stopscould be accurately compared to the way people around the world live their lives. For example, In The Machine Stops their society became so dependent on technology, that when technology died, the people died along with it. While the civilization society described in The Machine Stops and the civilization society today can be compared through a discussion of the technology to each communication, entertainment, transportation, and daily life, both civilizations share the potential danger of technology controlled. The first major way people depend on technology is through communication. In The Machine Stops no one ever came in contact with anyone else. An example as to how they were able to do this is through video chat. People in The Machine Stops only communicated with one another through video chat much like how people living in today s world use FaceTime. FaceTime allows people to talk face to face through a ... My family originate from turkey and Saudi Arabia but they have settled down in Algeria for a very long time. Many people misconstrue the true meaning of a Berber and assume Algerians are just Arabs who cannot speak proper Arabic. However, Berber is a completely different language than Arabic. Algeria has many different languages and dialects; almost every different region has its own dialect. In addition, every region has its own ethnicities, traditions and customs. The most popular language in the northern, Berber province is Kabyle, which is the language my ancestors spoke for many years. Kabyle was one of the languages I acquired growing up since both my parents used it to communicate with my grandmother. Since not everyone knows these languages, the appearance and different traditional clothes that are unique to each area make it easier to identify all these different people and cultures in Algeria, and which language to use to make communication easier and more flexible. There are 50 different states in Algeria and every single one has its own traditional clothing. That makes the country extremely diverse and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Cummi Essay New United Motor Manufacturing Incorporated, the 1984 joint venture between Toyota and General Motors, was by all accounts a manufacturing success. NUMMI s effectiveness was evidenced by the drastic change in output quality, employee morale, and overall cost but while these great outcomes were recognized by GM, they were hardly leveraged. What supported these results were exactly the factors that radically set NUMMI apart from the rest of the GM family. Ultimately, GM s failure to adapt the plant s success was the result of a prideful conglomerate embodying a competitive internal structure and divisive culture so strong that it was unable to fully recognize and adapt to the fundamentally different NUMMI model. The culturewithin the broader General Motors, both at corporate and factory level, was one of self accomplishment. This praised the individual and unit, and neglected how teams of units might work together to achieve something greater. As a result, when faced with the opportunity to adapt to the Japanese style, backlash ensued not only at plant level, but higher in the chain of command, too. NPR s Frank Langfitt noted how GM managers visited NUMMI, [and] instead of trying to figure out how they could benefit from the system, some of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Problem Of Self State Conscious state according to dictionary.com is being aware of one s own existence these may involve thoughts, sensations (images, aches, pain, visual, auditory and tactual sensation etc.). Smart refuses to admit to the fact that sensations are irreducibly psychical because of Occam s razor (which suggests that such matters should not even be put into consideration). He affirms there is no philosophical argument that compels us to be dualist, he writes I am in pain is a genuine report, and that what it reports is an irreducibly psychical something (Adler and Elgin 384). Tax payer s money pays for their medical bills, the jails, and deportation back to where they came from. Our jobs and identities are being taken away as well. Coming to the United States is seen as an advantage to get ahead in life for most other countries. When they take advantage of breaking the system it effects the citizens more so than it does them. However, research indicates that the majority of the illegal immigrants go to their chosen destinations for the primarily economic and personal reasons, such as search for jobs opportunities and family reunification. It thus implies that by understanding the reasons as to why these people migrate illegally, the respective states may come up with executable measures to ensure that illegal immigration is no more. The best option for solving the issue of illegal immigration in an effective manner is by removing the incentives that draw the people into other states without following the recommended legal procedures (Hoffmeier, 2009). At first, the governments experiencing cases of illegal immigration need to enforce their laws of immigration and to crack down on those employers that hire illegal aliens. The governments should decide to make it a felony act for employing people without undergoing the proper channels of immigration and checking the applicant s background (Gaines Kappeler, 2011). The only way of making illegal immigrants leave the countries under which they reside illegally is by making life difficult for them to keep on leaving there. By 1988 the entire U.S had adopted the Federal Uniform Drinking Age Act, which set the drinking age to twenty one. However, in 1920 the United States banned the sale, production, importation, and transportation of alcohol. This era known as the Prohibition sparked the popularity of hidden underground bars and events. The Prohibition Era is a prime example of how people did anything to intake alcohol and eventually this led to the act of doing illegal things. It is obvious to say that many people in the 1920 s were going against the law and were consuming alcohol. Today, this age seems to be a topic of controversy and debate. Many countries have established their drinking age to eighteen and younger. To many people believe that the idea of lowering the legal drinking agein the United States seems great. However, others believe that this idea may bring upon more conflict and tragedy. The drinking age should not be lowered and should stay at the uniform drinking age of twenty one. Ruth C. Engs, a professor at Indiana University, supports the idea that the drinking age should be lowered and should allow young adults to drink in controlled environments. She firmly believes that by lowering the drinking age will result in a decrease in irresponsible drinking that can lead to devastation. Over a century and a half ago, reform advocates like Dorothea Dix campaigned for prison reform, urging lawmakers to house the mentally ill in hospitals rather than in prisons. The efforts undertaken by Dix and other like minded reformers were successful: from around 1870 to 1970, most of the United States mentally ill population was housed in hospitals rather than in prisons. Considering reformers made great strides in improving this situation over a century and a half ago. Granted, mental hospitals in the late 19th and early 20th century were often badly run and critically flawed, but rather than pushing for reform of these hospitals, many politicians lobbied for them to close their doors, switching instead to a community based system for treating the mentally ill. Although deinstitutionalization was originally understood as a humane way to offer more suitable services to the mentally ill in community based settings, some politicians seized upon it as a way to save money by shutting down institutions without providing any meaningful treatment alternatives. The Treaty Of Berlin Conference Essay From the mid 1400s to the mid 1700s, Europe established many trade ports in Africa, but no colonization actually took place, and the few colonies that did exist were along the coastline. In the last half of the 19th century, this all began to change. European countries began to invade Africa s interior. By 1870, about 10% of Africawas under European control, and in just 20 short years, this number grew to almost 90%. Every European country wanted a slice of Africa, and this became known as the scramble for Africa. To avoid war between the European countries, The Berlin Conference was held from 1884 1885. This allowed the Europeans to carve Africa into colonies. As a direct result of this, the political and economic ways of Africa were drastically changed for many years to come. And to go along with those books he s made short stories. And two of which have similar ideas or symbolism of his personal thoughts. And they are The Pedestrian and The Flying Machine . The Pedestrian is a story about a man who is walking at night. He would be considered normal for us but in this future society of 2053, he is very different. And so he is arrested for just walking. The rest is just interpretation or theories. The Flying Machine takes place many years ago in China. However the emperor sees it as a great danger, and is too beautiful for its own right(hinted by the quote Yes, too beautiful, . He would rather have something more simple and actually good. However the emperor replies with, You have told me nothing at all. As from his point of view, there is nothing great about this at all. Then later in the story, the emperor has him seized for inventing this thing. And when he is asked about why he is doing this, the emperor shows him a beautiful invention of his own. In this paper, a classical model describing a food web in a chemostat involving three species competing for non reproducing, growth rate limiting nutrient in which one of the competitors predates on one of the other competitors is considered. Quantitative analyses of non negativity and boundedness of solution trajectories, dissipativity, and behavior around equilibria, global stability and persistence of the model equations are analyzed. We present the global stability of equilibria by constructing a Lyapunov function. Hopf bifurcation theory is applied. The interactions that occur between people and non human animals, particularly in the Appalachian region, has led to profound changes both on the local community. The most significant interaction to take place and has influenced the area drastically is domestication. Four types of domestication at the forefront of Appalachian cultureare livestock, blood sports, pet keeping, and animal s prevalence in oral folklore. The introduction of domestication previous to and after the Neolithic Revolution has harbored new relationships between humans and animals that have altered the mountain face, culture, and economy of the Appalachian region. The most prevalent human animal interaction to be observed and widely practiced in the Appalachian Mountains is the keeping of domesticated animals. The region was widely used as hunting and gathering land previous to colonial expansion. Animals were not domesticated by Native Americans their animism, or the belief that all organisms and inanimate objects possess a soul ( Constructing Animals ). However, it was not until the Neolithic Revolution reached the Appalachians that sustainable agriculture became a standard way to obtain food. Whether it is our mode of transportation, throwing a piece of trash on the ground, buying products made from trees, and to be perfectly honest the concentration in which we live, by which I mean the proximity of the average residents in which we reside. These all seem like regular everyday things that are just normal. But in the past things like these were so beyond the norm that they would seem alien and impossible. The first matter that I pointed out, our mode of transportation, differs from person to person. There are those that have decided to either not use any fossil fuel burning vehicular modes of transportation, such as walking and riding bikes; while others have decided to greatly decrease their ecological footprint by using various forms of carpooling, whether it being literal carpooling with friends or coworkers, or taking modes of mass transportation such as buses and subways or underground railways. In reality, they set the stage for the erosion of the morals the enlisted soldiers are supposed to possess. While the morals were being chipped away, so was the original plan the battalion had hoped to follow. Fragmentation orders became a pseudo standard for the boys of Bravo Company. • 50. Negative Effects Of Technology The effects of technology usage have long been a topic of debate, with the negative consequences often being brought up. Authors such as Robert Samuels, Alison Gopnik, Nicholas Carr, Gary Small and Vorgan Gigi have all addressed this topic in their own articles. In Samuels Breaking Down Borders: How Technology Transforms the Private and Public Realms, he discusses the creation of private bubbles in public spaces due to technology, and the consequent alienation of others. Diagnosing the Digital Revolution by Gopnik argues that the habits that tech users have today have always existed, while Carr s Is Google Making Us Stupid? states that technology is actively changing the way humans think. Meet Your iBrain by Gigi and Small covers how technology affects brains and alters them. This paper will use the articles and an interview with a peer to analyze the perceived negative effects of using technology, particularly worse memory, shorter attention span, exacerbation of bad habits, and shifting emotions. The most noticeable effect of technology usage is a shortage of memory; not as in computer memory, but human memory. With Google constantly at people s fingertips, it s easy to look up information rather than memorize it. Carr cites in his article that tech users cease to exercise their memory and become forgetful, instead of relying on the internet to quickly search for facts without having to commit them to memory (7). He also states that humans are losing the capacity to deep read and cannot unearth meaning in articles the way that they used to in the time of the printing press and less evolved pieces of technology (3). In Gigi and Small s article, they mention that the prefrontal cortex, or the area in the brain that handles short term memory, could be altered by technology usage (4). However, Kristina Konidaris, a student who uses multiple technological devices daily, states that the technology does not have a profound impact on her memory. Instead, she states that her memory is more affected by her interest in the subject and her feelings rather than the technology used, although sometimes it may be easier to remember things she has handwritten rather than typed.
