Walk Away From Waits.
Leaders can often be the last person in the organization to change.
Many leaders are reluctant to change because they have achieved a
measure of success. Others don’t like to change because change is
difficult and hard. Whatever the reasons that cause a leader to resist
change, change is an experience that must not be avoided.
Great leader's increasingly innovate. They understand the need to
grow and develop new business concepts and products. They are
willing to do both incremental innovation and disruptive innovation.
They know the future belongs to the creative and those that practice
innovation. Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon challenges leaders by
reminding them, "You have to be willing to be misunderstood if you're
going to innovate."
Innovation starts with evaluation. Small innovations begin with
examining how to do existing tasks faster, better, or quicker. Every
person on the team should be asked to evaluate their work by
reviewing and thinking about ways to accomplish the same results
differently. Other team members should also have the ability to
challenge the status quo. When organizations evaluate their process
and find new ways to do existing tasks they become innovative.
In this CXP Executive Guide, the CEO will examine a checklist to
understand if they are ready to make a change in their personal
life or business, and they will brainstorm areas where they can find
innovation in their company to meet new market demands.

Leaders like having plenty of options when deciding on paths to take in
business. Although options are beneficial when considering choices to
make, slowing down the process of decision making can sabotage business
success. Why? It creates confusion. It is far better for a leader to reach
a “yes” or “no” decision than to fall into the trap of waiting. Waiting
can cause business leaders to become indecisive. This indecisiveness
is especially harmful if a leader wants to encourage team members
to make decisions rather than let decisions only happen under their
watch.
Jesus taught his disciples about the importance of change.
One of the greatest paradoxes of the Bible is the God who
does not change and who is the Alpha and Omega is also the
God that encourages His followers to change and find new
and better ways of living and staying close to Him.
One critical mistake many business leaders make is not
changing or not changing fast enough. Leaders that
fall into the habit of waiting to change themselves or
their organization will often lead the organization
ineffectively. In fact, waiting can often be the worst
decision that is made in business.1

Leaders must not wait too long to make their next business
decision. Examine how “waits” hurt Well Done leaders.
1. WAITS CAN WEIGH DOWN THE ORGANIZATION
WITH UNCERTAINTY AND UNCLARITY
Leaders must provide clarity to the organization on priorities
and values. Only when the leader knows where they are
going and why they want to get there can they inspire
people to follow their lead. When a leader falls into the
habit of waiting on decisions or projects, it creates confusion
among the team about top priorities. Leaders and CEOs
should frequently communicate with team members
the organization's top priorities — be it profit, product
development, or even customer service, and explain in as
much detail as possible how those priorities impact every
level of the organization.
2. WAITS CAN WEAKEN THE LEADER’S IMPACT
It’s easier for a leader to say “wait” as opposed to “yes” or
“no.” However, this only weakens the leader’s voice. Leaders
must be crystal clear on the boundaries they are setting for
their organization when they give a clear no and must be
bold in their passion for answering yes.
3. WAITS CAN DETER PRODUCTIVITY
Waiting can cause a leader and team to worry about all the
projects and tasks that are not getting done. Alternatively, it
can cause a team to feel weighed down with other projects
and activities that are not essential to business success.
Revisit your decision to wait, either by rejecting and ignoring
a task (“no”) or by acting upon and moving forward with a
task (“yes.”) Establish clear boundaries around how many
“yes” projects your team is working on at any given time. In
the same way, establish a boundary around the number of
“waits” that are on your “waitlist.” When your organization
has reached its capacity, it’s time to move projects and
tasks to the “no” column so that they do not slow down the
progress of the “yes” tasks that your team is committed to
completing.

4. WAITS CAN WORK AGAINST MOMENTUM AND
THE ABILITY TO MOVE FORWARD
“Yes” is a momentum maker; “wait” is a momentum killer.
When a person has an idea, and they bring it to you, the
leader, the last thing they want to hear are phrases such as
“Yes, but” “Not now,” or “Maybe later”. Give your employee a
yes or a no rather than a “wait”. “Wait” kills the momentum
and enthusiasm of a team that is working toward a solution.
Communicate to your team that you always want to say yes
to their ideas and solutions but that they must first develop
a solution and approach.

The power to change and be different is one of the most beautiful abilities humans and leaders
possess. The change process is often highlighted by the word “transformation.” To be transformed
means to be in a different form than what used to be in the past.
In 1 Corinthians 6, the apostle Paul reminds the new believers of the choice of transformation that
they had made and encourages them to press forward and not return to their old ways of thinking
and living. Paul states further that the old way they were living would not allow them to have a
Kingdom impact or even be a part of the Kingdom of God. Paul is clear in his words, “or do you not
know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
As a leading visionary, Paul is reminding his readers that some choices and decisions are of no
benefit. Paul moves from general to specific in his writing when he starts to list sins and behaviors
that lead to the expulsion from the Kingdom of God. Some of those sins included - sexual
immorality, homosexuality, thievery, drunkenness, and slander.
The power of these verses is found in verse eleven, where Paul makes this penetrating statement
- “and that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were
justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ by the Spirit of our God.”

Catch the phrase, “that is what some of you were, but you were washed.” This is the power
of transformation that happens when people come to know a personal relationship with Jesus.
You don’t have to continue to be what you were. You can be different. You can be washed.2
You
can be transformed. This is truly an inspiring reminder of ‘the power of different’ for the life of the
believer.
The Well Done CEO must consider what changes God would have them make in their business.
However, only considering the business will not get the leader to Well Done. In order to ultimately
please God, leaders must also consider where God is asking them to change in order to lead their
lives and their businesses more effectively.
To change in the Bible often is referred to by the word “repent.” Repent means that one has missed
the mark that God has established as the standard for life or living. Then the next step is to change
the direction in which a person is headed. Repent means to turn around and head in a different
direction. It means to change, that you were one way, but today you are different.
Don’t wait to make a change that you know you need to make. Life and business are too difficult
already; the leader doesn’t need to make it harder by fighting the change that God is asking you
to make. God will help you with your changes, and He will continue to inspire you from what you
were to what He has created you to be.
JOIN THE “WELL DONE” MISSION
CEOs and leaders who are a part of CEO Experience are on a mission to hear the words, “Well
Done.” Part of that mission is imparting the phrase “Well Done” to other leaders and team
members as much as possible. Can you imagine a world where companies told their teams on a
daily basis: “Well Done?” Can you imagine the motivation employees would have if every day they
were greeted with the words, “Well Done”? Can you imagine what you could accomplish if daily
you heard God whisper in your ears, “Well Done, my child; with you, I am well pleased”! This is the

Business Application: Knowing When To Change and How To Do It Effectively
In his book “Creativity Inc.” Pixar CEO Ed Catmull states, “It’s folly to think you can avoid change,
no matter how much you might want to. But also, to my mind, you shouldn’t want to. There is
no growth or success without change.” Everything changes. One of the most powerful experiences
a leader can experience is the experience of change. The reality of life is that we will either
embrace change or endure change. The goal of this experience is to become change masters.
The great speaker Jim Rohn reminds us that, “Your life does not get better by chance, it gets
better by change.”3
However, leaders can often be the last person in the organization to change. Many leaders are
reluctant to change because they have achieved a measure of success. Others don’t like to change
because change is difficult and hard. Whatever the reasons that cause a leader to resist change,
change is an experience that must not be avoided.
INNOVATION IS ANOTHER WORD FOR CHANGE

Every leader should ask their team consistently how to
expand what the organization or department is already
doing. Most great companies succeed here. They don’t
necessarily invent a new product or an idea. They just grow
or expand on what they have found to be successful by
finding new ways to do existing tasks.
Be willing to experiment with everything to find new
services, products, or systems.
Another important step for innovation is experimentation.
Innovators and Innovative organizations know that they
must try many things and make many mistakes. More
mistakes faster lead to successful innovation. Thomas
Edison understood this principle. That is why he was able to
reply about the 10,000 failures that he experienced when
creating the lightbulb that “I haven’t failed. I’ve just found
10,000 ways that won’t work.“6
Knowing when to change can be a difficult process.
Changing something too soon can bring defeat.
Changing something too late can bring despair. Changing
something without the help of others can bring discord.
Changing something without clarity can bring disorder.7
But changing something at the right time and in the right
way will bring you closer to your destiny.

You know that you and your organization are ready for change when it meets one of the
areas on the change checklist. If you meet several areas on the checklist, then you know
that a change must be made immediately.
A CHANGE CHECKLIST
PERSPECTIVE	 ¨ YES ¨ NO
Change needs to happen when your point of
view is not clear enough. Leaders must strive
to have a clear perspective. They can see into
the future and are called to create a future
for others. Be sure of this foundational truth.
As a leader, if your perspective is not clear,
the perspective of your people will never be
clear. Change must happen in this situation to
see clearly. You know you are ready to change
when your perspective is clear enough.
RESULTS		 ¨ YES ¨ NO
Change needs to happen when you do not see
the expected or desired results. Results are the
response to an action. When the actual results
that you are experiencing are not what you
desire, change must occur. You know you are
ready to change when your desire for results is
inspirational enough.
MOTIVATION 	 ¨ YES ¨ NO
Change needs to happen when you do not have
a vision big enough to motivate yourself to
push harder. It is easy to settle. Great leaders
are great achievers. The bigger the dream,
the greater the motivation. You know you are
ready to change when your motivation is deep
enough.
ACCOUNTABILITY ¨ YES ¨ NO
Change needs to happen when enough people
around you encourage you to do something
different. An outside set of eyes can be a
leader’s best asset. If you have multiple people
around you exhorting you to change, then
change must be considered and implemented.
You know you are ready to change when you
have accountability in place.
PAIN			 ¨ YES ¨ NO
Change needs to happen when you have pain
and suffering large enough. Pain often signifies
the need to do something different. When the
pain becomes significant enough, it encourages
change even when change is not easy. You
know you are ready to change when your pain
is significant enough.
BELIEF		 ¨ YES ¨ NO
Change needs to happen when you have a big
enough belief that things can be better when
you do something different. Belief always
precedes lasting change. You know you are
ready to change when you believe you can.
DESIRE		 ¨ YES ¨ NO
Change needs to happen when you have a
deep enough desire to do something different
in your life. Desire has a close partner called
disgust. Disgust and desire can both lead to
a defining moment when a person recognizes
that they have the power to change their life
for the better. You know you are ready to
change when your desire is big enough.

In order to make change lasting, CEO Experience, in each
of the CXP Executive Retreat Guides, includes an Action

that each CEO considers after each guide, the change or
changes that they need to make to lead better to Well

One issue that many leaders face is deciding to change and
getting their team to embrace change as an organization.
The truth is that leaders lead in a new business reality where
companies must do everything quicker and better but with
fewer resources.
The world has changed and continues changing, and your
business models can become outdated even before the ink is
dry on the paper. Years ago, companies developed a ten- year
strategic plan. Companies can barely develop a one-year or
even a month plan in today's marketplace.

Change is essential for success. This is true both in the personal and business areas of a leader’s
life. Well Done CEOs will be wise to embrace change and make it part of their corporate culture.
The famous Winston Churchill once said, “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change
often.“8
The Six Steps To Real Change
The Bible outlines six steps to successfully implement change that can both be effective personally
and in business. These six steps must be embraced and embodied by the CEO in the organization if
the organization is to accept any new change successfully.
STEP #1 - CAST A CLEAR AND UNDERSTANDABLE VISION
The first and most important component of change is painting a picture of a better tomorrow.
The CEO and top leadership team must speak about the vision and the changes that need to take
place in order to make the new vision a reality. Leaders' need to keep repeating the vision until it is
deeply embedded into every aspect of the company and then repeat it some more. The right vision
is a key component to creating a culture of change.
STEP #2 - HONOR FIRST STEPS TO CHANGE
The first steps of change should be celebrated and honored. Starting is always the hardest part,
and that is true for both business and personal changes. First steps in an organization could be
compared to honoring early adopters of change. Early adopters are the key to any change or
movement in an organization. Leaders who want their organization to embrace change should
encourage and reward early adopters who accept and embrace the change that the leader would
like for the organization to embrace.
STEP #3 - ACCOUNTABILITY IS PLACED AROUND CHANGE PRINCIPLES
The next responsibility for the leader who wants to embrace change as an organization is
establishing accountability around change principles. The leader must identify behaviors,
attitudes, and processes they want to change and then hold the team accountable to ensure
that the desired change becomes a reality.
STEP #4 - NEW HABITS ARE CREATED AND MODELED
The next responsibility of a change leader is to create new habits. The leader must establish new
behaviors. We cannot change old behaviors without having a new behavior in its place. If a leader
does not truly embrace the change in the organization, change will not happen in the organization.
The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old but on building the
new.

STEP #5 - GATHER THE TEAM TOGETHER TO
DISCUSS ISSUES AND CONCERNS
It is important to gather people around you to support you
in making a personal change. In the same way, a leader
should gather their team around to discuss issues and
concerns related to changes in the organization. Change
leaders learn to respond to their team’s questions, concerns,
and doubts. Great leaders take the time to walk through
transition with their people. They provide answers to the
questions of their team. They listen intently and seek to
understand the concerns that might hinder change. And
they assure the doubts of their people so that they can have
the motivation and inspiration to make change a reality for
the organization.
STEP #6 - ENDURE SETBACKS THROUGH
PERSISTENCE AND ENCOURAGEMENT
Change can be difficult and hard. Most changes do not
happen automatically. Change occurs through process,
and sometimes that process includes setbacks. Real
change happens when people and organizations develop
perseverance and endurance. Real change takes continual
commitment. Change can be difficult and hard to embrace.
This reality can be true for leaders and CEOs, and it can
be true for organizations. Great CEOs learn to embrace
change themselves and develop organizations that
create change to stay ahead in a changing marketplace.
The Five Channels of Change
When many people think of change, they think of changing
an action. They think specifically about a new habit or
behavior that they need to practice in order to achieve a
better life. Actions are essential to change. However, a
change in action is only one dimension of an actual change
process. One main reason that most change fails is because
we only focus on one area of the five dimensions of change.
For change to be successful, we must change at least three
of the five channels.

CHANGE CHANNEL #1
Accepted Actions. The first dimension of change is to
challenge accepted actions. Change happens when a person
begins to think about new actions and behaviors that need
to be implemented. Actions may be the most challenging
dimension to change, but in order to have a successful
change, it cannot be the only dimension to change.
CHANGE CHANNEL #2
Bad Beliefs. Bad beliefs are those negative thoughts or ideas
that the leader repeats to themselves that robs them of
their energy and effectiveness. Before successful change can
be enacted, a review of the belief about that change must
be examined. If a person does not have the right belief
system in place before a change is attempted, the change
will always fail.
CHANGE CHANNEL #3
Timid Thinking. Albert Einstein was famous for saying,
“We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of
thinking we used when we created them.”9
Change
demands that we think differently. A dimension of
successful change is the ability to envision a different future
because of the change that has been enacted and created.
CHANGE CHANNEL #4
Harmful Habits. Another dimension of change is to examine
the unhealthy habits that lead up to a sabotaging action.
Identifying the practices that are a part of life must be an
essential part of effective change.
CHANGE CHANNEL #5
Cursed Choices. Cursed choices are those decisions that
a person makes that continue to be negative or do not
produce results. Repeated bad choices or decisions
does not ensure better results. Here is a
fundamental truth to embrace. The best choice to make
after a bad choice is a good choice, not another bad choice.

The Change Experience
A Case Study About Change From Twitter
Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams and
launched in July, whereby the service rapidly gained worldwide popularity. In 2012, more than 100
million users posted 340 million tweets a day, and the service handled an average of 1.6 billion
search queries per day. In 2013, it was one of the ten most-visited websites and had been described
as "the SMS of the Internet.”
As of 2016, Twitter had more than 319 million monthly active users. On the day of the 2016 U.S.
presidential election, Twitter proved to be the largest source of breaking news, with 40 million
tweets sent by 10 p.m. (Eastern Time) that day.
Twitter's origins lie in a "daylong brainstorming session" held by board members of the podcasting
company Odeo. Jack Dorsey, then an undergraduate student at New York University, introduced
the idea of an individual using an SMS service to communicate with a small group. The original
project code name for the service was twttr, an idea that Williams later ascribed to Noah Glass,
inspired by Flickr and the five-character length of American SMS short codes. The decision was
also partly due to the fact that domain twitter.com was already in use, and it was six months after
the launch of twttr that the crew purchased the domain and changed the name of the service to
Twitter.
The first Twitter prototype, developed by Dorsey and contractor Florian Weber, was used as
an internal service for Odeo employees and the full version was introduced publicly on July 15,
2006. In October 2006, Biz Stone, Evan Williams, Dorsey, and other members of Odeo formed
ObviousCorporation and acquired Odeo, together with its assets—including Odeo.com and
Twitter.com—from the investors and shareholders. Williams fired Glass, who was silent about his
part in Twitter's startup until 2011.
Twitter spun off into its own company in April 2007. Williams provided insight into the ambiguity
that defined this early period in a 2013 interview: “With Twitter, it wasn't clear what it was. They
called it a social network, they called it microblogging, but it was hard to define, because it didn't
replace anything. There was this path of discovery with something like that, where over time you
figure out what it is. Twitter actually changed from what we thought it was in the beginning,
which we described as status updates and a social utility. It is that, in part, but the insight we
eventually came to was Twitter was really more of an information network than it is a social
network.”10

Bonus: The First Steps of Change
C
Changing can be difficult. Change can be especially hard for a person who has lost their confidence
in their ability to change. When a person loses their confidence, the function of making other
changes in their life can be far more difficult than necessary.
Have You Lost Your Change Confidence?
What steps could you take to become more change ready? Although leaders face many demons
that they have to overcome, the issue that impacts most leaders is how to regain their change
confidence after a loss.
To regain your change confidence after a loss follow these critical steps.
1. BE HONEST
The first step to regaining change confidence is to admit the truth about any and all failures.
Leaders who regain momentum after a loss don't hide the mistakes or run from the failure. They
take ownership of the decisions that have caused the loss and bring them out into the open.
2. BE VISIONARY
The next step for the leader is to see a new vision for the organization or for themselves. Start to
dream again. This is the hardest step for some leaders. Begin to see a new future and see the new
future as the new reality of the organization.
3. BE EXPECTANT
The third step is to start to have an expectant positive attitude. Believe that the situation will
begin to get better. Start believing and conveying to others that you expect new blessings to come
in the form of new customers, new ideas, new products, new solutions, and new behaviors. Here is
a leadership truth. You will get what you expect and believe is possible.
4. BE FOCUSED
The fourth step is to focus on small victories. When you start winning, you start winning.
Start by focusing on winning small victories every day. Ask yourself this question every day, "What
is my greatest win that I will achieve today.” Then don't quit working that day until you have
accomplished your win for that day. Small wins and victories lead to larger wins and victories.

5. BE ENCOURAGED
The fifth step is to find a group of people that can encourage
you and remind you that you are a winner. You will have
many people in your life that will remind you of your failures
and your mistakes. Equally, you need peers around you
to call out your best and encourage you to become the
successful leader you can become.
6. BE DECISIVE
The last step to regaining change confidence is to make
decisions and make them quickly. Lack of confidence causes
us to lose the ability to make tough decisions. Decisions
and choices lead us to a better future. A leader is called to
make decisions, and the worst thing that a leader can do to
an organization is indecision. Ask yourself, what decision do
I need to make today and then make it and don’t look back.
Start by making small decisions that seem straightforward
and build on the bigger decisions to impact the company
significantly.
It is unfortunate when a leader loses their change
confidence. However, a leader can regain their confidence
even after they experience a loss. Leadership confidence
is the X-Factor for leaders. Leaders who are confident and
bold in their belief about their company and their life can
experience breakthroughs and successes. If you have lost
your leadership confidence, make today the day that you
start taking it back. Not only for your benefit but also for the
good of those that you lead.

The Dimensions of Life -Where DoYou NeedTo Change?

LLife is made up of only four dimensions. In Deuteronomy 6:5, the Old Testament leader Moses
tells his followers that their primary focus in life is to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart,
with all your mind, and with all your strength.” Jesus repeats this statement in Matthew 22:37, where
he adds the word soul. These four dimensions are all there ever was and will ever be. When you
consider changes to your life, the wise person should consider one of these four dimensions as
a place to start.

					 with all your mind, and with all your strength.”
DIMENSION #1 – HEART
The first dimension to consider change is with the heart. The heart is the seat of all key relationships
in life. How we rate this dimension of our life will speak a great deal about how satisfied we are with
life. Key questions to consider would be:
• do you have unresolved conflict with the key people in your life?
• are you spending quality time with the right people?
• have you made the key people in your life know that they are essential components of your life?
Rate your relationships at this current time. On a scale from one to ten, with ten being high,
how satisfied are you with the key relationships in your life.

DIMENSION #2 – SOUL
The second dimension to consider change is with the soul. The soul is the critical longing inside
each person to connect with their creator or higher being. The questions to consider here would be:
• are you fulfilling your calling in life?
• are you connected to your core values?
• are you satisfied with your knowledge of the spiritual?
Rate your connection to your soul side at this current time. On a scale from one to ten, with
ten being high, how satisfied are you with your soul?

The third dimension to consider change is with the mind. The mind is the motivation and habit
maker of our lives. It is essential to living a healthy life to have a healthy mind. A healthy mind is

• are you learning and growing daily?
• are you satisfied with your current level of knowledge?

Many leaders are reluctant to change because they have achieved a measure of success. Others don’t like to change because change is difficult and hard. Whatever the reasons that cause a leader to resist change, change is an experience that must not be avoided. Great leader's increasingly innovate. Other team members should also have the ability to challenge the status quo. When organizations evaluate their process and find new ways to do existing tasks they become innovative. Although options are beneficial when considering choices to make, slowing down the process of decision making can sabotage business success. Why? It creates confusion. It is far better for a leader to reach a “yes” or “no” decision than to fall into the trap of waiting. Waiting can cause business leaders to become indecisive. This indecisiveness is especially harmful if a leader wants to encourage team members to make decisions rather than let decisions only happen under their watch. Jesus taught his disciples about the importance of change. One of the greatest paradoxes of the Bible is the God who does not change and who is the Alpha and Omega is also the God that encourages His followers to change and find new and better ways of living and staying close to Him. One critical mistake many business leaders make is not changing or not changing fast enough. Leaders that fall into the habit of waiting to change themselves or their organization will often lead the organization ineffectively. Examine how “waits” hurt Well Done leaders. 1. WAITS CAN WEIGH DOWN THE ORGANIZATION WITH UNCERTAINTY AND UNCLARITY Leaders must provide clarity to the organization on priorities and values. Only when the leader knows where they are going and why they want to get there can they inspire people to follow their lead. When a leader falls into the habit of waiting on decisions or projects, it creates confusion among the team about top priorities. Leaders and CEOs should frequently communicate with team members the organization's top priorities — be it profit, product development, or even customer service, and explain in as much detail as possible how those priorities impact every level of the organization. 2. WAITS CAN WEAKEN THE LEADER’S IMPACT It’s easier for a leader to say “wait” as opposed to “yes” or “no.” However, this only weakens the leader’s voice. Leaders must be crystal clear on the boundaries they are setting for their organization when they give a clear no and must be bold in their passion for answering yes. 3. WAITS CAN DETER PRODUCTIVITY Waiting can cause a leader and team to worry about all the projects and tasks that are not getting done. Alternatively, it can cause a team to feel weighed down with other projects and activities that are not essential to business success. Revisit your decision to wait, either by rejecting and ignoring a task (“no”) or by acting upon and moving forward with a task (“yes.”) Establish clear boundaries around how many “yes” projects your team is working on at any given time. In the same way, establish a boundary around the number of “waits” that are on your “waitlist.” When your organization has reached its capacity, it’s time to move projects and tasks to the “no” column so that they do not slow down the progress of the “yes” tasks that your team is committed to completing. 6 Bimini,The Bahamas

WAITS CAN WORK AGAINST MOMENTUM AND THE ABILITY TO MOVE FORWARD “Yes” is a momentum maker; “wait” is a momentum killer. When a person has an idea, and they bring it to you, the leader, the last thing they want to hear are phrases such as “Yes, but” “Not now,” or “Maybe later”. Give your employee a yes or a no rather than a “wait”. “Wait” kills the momentum and enthusiasm of a team that is working toward a solution. Communicate to your team that you always want to say yes to their ideas and solutions but that they must first develop a solution and approach.

The change process is often highlighted by the word “transformation.” To be transformed means to be in a different form than what used to be in the past. In 1 Corinthians 6, the apostle Paul reminds the new believers of the choice of transformation that they had made and encourages them to press forward and not return to their old ways of thinking and living. Paul states further that the old way they were living would not allow them to have a Kingdom impact or even be a part of the Kingdom of God. Paul is clear in his words, “or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God.” As a leading visionary, Paul is reminding his readers that some choices and decisions are of no benefit. Paul moves from general to specific in his writing when he starts to list sins and behaviors that lead to the expulsion from the Kingdom of God. Some of those sins included - sexual immorality, homosexuality, thievery, drunkenness, and slander. The power of these verses is found in verse eleven, where Paul makes this penetrating statement - “and that is what some of you were. Catch the phrase, “that is what some of you were, but you were washed.” This is the power of transformation that happens when people come to know a personal relationship with Jesus. You don’t have to continue to be what you were. You can be different. You can be washed.2 You can be transformed. This is truly an inspiring reminder of ‘the power of different’ for the life of the believer. The Well Done CEO must consider what changes God would have them make in their business. However, only considering the business will not get the leader to Well Done. In order to ultimately please God, leaders must also consider where God is asking them to change in order to lead their lives and their businesses more effectively. To change in the Bible often is referred to by the word “repent.” Repent means that one has missed the mark that God has established as the standard for life or living. Then the next step is to change the direction in which a person is headed. Repent means to turn around and head in a different direction. It means to change, that you were one way, but today you are different. Don’t wait to make a change that you know you need to make. Life and business are too difficult already; the leader doesn’t need to make it harder by fighting the change that God is asking you to make. God will help you with your changes, and He will continue to inspire you from what you were to what He has created you to be. I Business Application: Knowing When To Change and How To Do It Effectively In his book “Creativity Inc.” Pixar CEO Ed Catmull states, “It’s folly to think you can avoid change, no matter how much you might want to. But also, to my mind, you shouldn’t want to. There is no growth or success without change.” Everything changes. One of the most powerful experiences a leader can experience is the experience of change. The reality of life is that we will either embrace change or endure change. The goal of this experience is to become change masters. The great speaker Jim Rohn reminds us that, “Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.”3 However, leaders can often be the last person in the organization to change. That is why he was able to reply about the 10,000 failures that he experienced when creating the lightbulb that “I haven’t failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.“6 Knowing when to change can be a difficult process. Changing something too soon can bring defeat. Changing something too late can bring despair. Changing something without the help of others can bring discord. If you meet several areas on the checklist, then you know that a change must be made immediately. A CHANGE CHECKLIST PERSPECTIVE ¨ YES ¨ NO Change needs to happen when your point of view is not clear enough. Leaders must strive to have a clear perspective. They can see into the future and are called to create a future for others. Be sure of this foundational truth. As a leader, if your perspective is not clear, the perspective of your people will never be clear. Change must happen in this situation to see clearly. You know you are ready to change when your perspective is clear enough. RESULTS ¨ YES ¨ NO Change needs to happen when you do not see the expected or desired results. Results are the response to an action. When the actual results that you are experiencing are not what you desire, change must occur. You know you are ready to change when your desire for results is inspirational enough. MOTIVATION ¨ YES ¨ NO Change needs to happen when you do not have a vision big enough to motivate yourself to push harder. It is easy to settle. Great leaders are great achievers. The bigger the dream, the greater the motivation. You know you are ready to change when your motivation is deep enough. ACCOUNTABILITY ¨ YES ¨ NO Change needs to happen when enough people around you encourage you to do something different. An outside set of eyes can be a leader’s best asset. If you have multiple people around you exhorting you to change, then change must be considered and implemented. You know you are ready to change when you have accountability in place. PAIN ¨ YES ¨ NO Change needs to happen when you have pain and suffering large enough. Pain often signifies the need to do something different. When the pain becomes significant enough, it encourages change even when change is not easy. You know you are ready to change when your pain is significant enough. BELIEF ¨ YES ¨ NO Change needs to happen when you have a big enough belief that things can be better when you do something different. Belief always precedes lasting change. You know you are ready to change when you believe you can. DESIRE ¨ YES ¨ NO Change needs to happen when you have a deep enough desire to do something different in your life. Desire has a close partner called disgust. Disgust and desire can both lead to a defining moment when a person recognizes that they have the power to change their life for the better. The world has changed and continues changing, and your business models can become outdated even before the ink is dry on the paper. Years ago, companies developed a ten- year strategic plan. Companies can barely develop a one-year or even a month plan in today's marketplace. Well Done CEOs will be wise to embrace change and make it part of their corporate culture. The famous Winston Churchill once said, “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.“8 The Six Steps To Real Change The Bible outlines six steps to successfully implement change that can both be effective personally and in business. These six steps must be embraced and embodied by the CEO in the organization if the organization is to accept any new change successfully. STEP #1 - CAST A CLEAR AND UNDERSTANDABLE VISION The first and most important component of change is painting a picture of a better tomorrow. The CEO and top leadership team must speak about the vision and the changes that need to take place in order to make the new vision a reality. Leaders' need to keep repeating the vision until it is deeply embedded into every aspect of the company and then repeat it some more. The right vision is a key component to creating a culture of change. STEP #2 - HONOR FIRST STEPS TO CHANGE The first steps of change should be celebrated and honored. Starting is always the hardest part, and that is true for both business and personal changes. First steps in an organization could be compared to honoring early adopters of change. Early adopters are the key to any change or movement in an organization. Leaders who want their organization to embrace change should encourage and reward early adopters who accept and embrace the change that the leader would like for the organization to embrace. STEP #3 - ACCOUNTABILITY IS PLACED AROUND CHANGE PRINCIPLES The next responsibility for the leader who wants to embrace change as an organization is establishing accountability around change principles. The leader must identify behaviors, attitudes, and processes they want to change and then hold the team accountable to ensure that the desired change becomes a reality. STEP #4 - NEW HABITS ARE CREATED AND MODELED The next responsibility of a change leader is to create new habits. The leader must establish new behaviors. We cannot change old behaviors without having a new behavior in its place. If a leader does not truly embrace the change in the organization, change will not happen in the organization. In the same way, a leader should gather their team around to discuss issues and concerns related to changes in the organization. Change leaders learn to respond to their team’s questions, concerns, and doubts. Great leaders take the time to walk through transition with their people. They provide answers to the questions of their team. They listen intently and seek to understand the concerns that might hinder change. And they assure the doubts of their people so that they can have the motivation and inspiration to make change a reality for the organization. STEP #6 - ENDURE SETBACKS THROUGH PERSISTENCE AND ENCOURAGEMENT Change can be difficult and hard. Most changes do not happen automatically. Change occurs through process, and sometimes that process includes setbacks. Real change happens when people and organizations develop perseverance and endurance. Real change takes continual commitment. Change can be difficult and hard to embrace. This reality can be true for leaders and CEOs, and it can be true for organizations. Great CEOs learn to embrace change themselves and develop organizations that create change to stay ahead in a changing marketplace. The Five Channels of Change When many people think of change, they think of changing an action. They think specifically about a new habit or behavior that they need to practice in order to achieve a better life. Actions are essential to change. However, a change in action is only one dimension of an actual change process. One main reason that most change fails is because we only focus on one area of the five dimensions of change.   • 19. The Change Experience CHANGE CHANNEL #1 Accepted Actions. The first dimension of change is to challenge accepted actions. Change happens when a person begins to think about new actions and behaviors that need to be implemented. Actions may be the most challenging dimension to change, but in order to have a successful change, it cannot be the only dimension to change. CHANGE CHANNEL #2 Bad Beliefs. Bad beliefs are those negative thoughts or ideas that the leader repeats to themselves that robs them of their energy and effectiveness. Before successful change can be enacted, a review of the belief about that change must be examined. If a person does not have the right belief system in place before a change is attempted, the change will always fail. CHANGE CHANNEL #3 Timid Thinking. Albert Einstein was famous for saying, “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.”9 Change demands that we think differently. A dimension of successful change is the ability to envision a different future because of the change that has been enacted and created. CHANGE CHANNEL #4 Harmful Habits. Another dimension of change is to examine the unhealthy habits that lead up to a sabotaging action. Identifying the practices that are a part of life must be an essential part of effective change. CHANGE CHANNEL #5 Cursed Choices. Cursed choices are those decisions that a person makes that continue to be negative or do not produce results. Repeated bad choices or decisions does not ensure better results. Here is a fundamental truth to embrace. The Change Experience A Case Study About Change From Twitter Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams and launched in July, whereby the service rapidly gained worldwide popularity. In 2012, more than 100 million users posted 340 million tweets a day, and the service handled an average of 1.6 billion search queries per day. In 2013, it was one of the ten most-visited websites and had been described as "the SMS of the Internet.” As of 2016, Twitter had more than 319 million monthly active users. On the day of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, Twitter proved to be the largest source of breaking news, with 40 million tweets sent by 10 p.m. (Eastern Time) that day. Twitter's origins lie in a "daylong brainstorming session" held by board members of the podcasting company Odeo. Jack Dorsey, then an undergraduate student at New York University, introduced the idea of an individual using an SMS service to communicate with a small group. The original project code name for the service was twttr, an idea that Williams later ascribed to Noah Glass, inspired by Flickr and the five-character length of American SMS short codes. The decision was also partly due to the fact that domain twitter.com was already in use, and it was six months after the launch of twttr that the crew purchased the domain and changed the name of the service to Twitter. The first Twitter prototype, developed by Dorsey and contractor Florian Weber, was used as an internal service for Odeo employees and the full version was introduced publicly on July 15, 2006. In October 2006, Biz Stone, Evan Williams, Dorsey, and other members of Odeo formed ObviousCorporation and acquired Odeo, together with its assets—including Odeo.com and Twitter.com—from the investors and shareholders. Williams fired Glass, who was silent about his part in Twitter's startup until 2011. Twitter spun off into its own company in April 2007. Change can be especially hard for a person who has lost their confidence in their ability to change. When a person loses their confidence, the function of making other changes in their life can be far more difficult than necessary. Have You Lost Your Change Confidence? What steps could you take to become more change ready? Although leaders face many demons that they have to overcome, the issue that impacts most leaders is how to regain their change confidence after a loss. To regain your change confidence after a loss follow these critical steps. 1. BE HONEST The first step to regaining change confidence is to admit the truth about any and all failures. Leaders who regain momentum after a loss don't hide the mistakes or run from the failure. They take ownership of the decisions that have caused the loss and bring them out into the open. 2. BE VISIONARY The next step for the leader is to see a new vision for the organization or for themselves. Start to dream again. This is the hardest step for some leaders. Begin to see a new future and see the new future as the new reality of the organization. 3. BE EXPECTANT The third step is to start to have an expectant positive attitude. Believe that the situation will begin to get better. Start believing and conveying to others that you expect new blessings to come in the form of new customers, new ideas, new products, new solutions, and new behaviors. Here is a leadership truth. You will get what you expect and believe is possible. 4. BE FOCUSED The fourth step is to focus on small victories. When you start winning, you start winning. Start by focusing on winning small victories every day. Ask yourself this question every day, "What is my greatest win that I will achieve today.” Then don't quit working that day until you have accomplished your win for that day. BE ENCOURAGED The fifth step is to find a group of people that can encourage you and remind you that you are a winner. You will have many people in your life that will remind you of your failures and your mistakes. Equally, you need peers around you to call out your best and encourage you to become the successful leader you can become. 6. BE DECISIVE The last step to regaining change confidence is to make decisions and make them quickly. Lack of confidence causes us to lose the ability to make tough decisions. Decisions and choices lead us to a better future. A leader is called to make decisions, and the worst thing that a leader can do to an organization is indecision. Ask yourself, what decision do I need to make today and then make it and don’t look back. Start by making small decisions that seem straightforward and build on the bigger decisions to impact the company significantly. It is unfortunate when a leader loses their change confidence. However, a leader can regain their confidence even after they experience a loss. Leadership confidence is the X-Factor for leaders. Leaders who are confident and bold in their belief about their company and their life can experience breakthroughs and successes. In Deuteronomy 6:5, the Old Testament leader Moses tells his followers that their primary focus in life is to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” Jesus repeats this statement in Matthew 22:37, where he adds the word soul. These four dimensions are all there ever was and will ever be. When you consider changes to your life, the wise person should consider one of these four dimensions as a place to start. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” DIMENSION #1 – HEART The first dimension to consider change is with the heart. The heart is the seat of all key relationships in life. How we rate this dimension of our life will speak a great deal about how satisfied we are with life.
