This is an update of our activities for May 2023. Dominican Starfish Foundation helps those suffering in poverty in the Dominican Republic in 5 different areas: Housing and Shelter Education Health and Wellness Food and Clothing Employment We thank all of our donors who make this possible!!

2. In May we
celebrate
Mothers.
This year, we
celebrated by
helping to
raise funds for
Annie and her
family to have
a home.
We are 4/5 of
the way to
completing the
fundraising for
this family.

4. Thank you to the Brian and Cora Oaks family and the McMillin
family for their service in the community of Monsovi in the
Dominican Republic.

5. Thanks to Kevin and JoAnn Nelson and family,
and for our local volunteer, Johan, for delivering
food and clothing in the community of San Rafael
de Yuma (near Punta Cana). The people there
were so grateful for the donations!!

6. Our Starfish
Center is where
we store and
distribute clothing.
This month our
volunteer Jose
Vasquez separated
the clothing into
five groups for
delivery in the
several other
communities.
Thanks to all of

helping with this
distribution.

out to the
countryside to
those in great
need there.

7. In October, Kim Hamilton and her daughter Kamryn started a fundraiser to build a
new home for Warly and Wandy. They made and sold hundreds of deluxe,
gourmet caramel apples. By the end of December, they had raised the whole
amount for Warly and Wandy and their 3 children to have a home. They came to
the Dominican and met their special family in February. Construction on the new
home began on March 20 and is nearly completion.

8. Nairelyn is 18 years old, and she
and her husband have 3 beautiful
children. She tragically lost her
hand and her home four months
ago. Funds for a new home were
also raised by Kim Hamilton of
Utah. Building started on April 14th
and will be completed in June.

9. In April of 2021, Guenter and Annemarie Dzierzon
donated funds for Heraldita to have a home in the
Dominican Republic.
Since she didn’t own property, and we couldn’t find any
for a reasonable price, we purchased a home for her
(pictured on the left).
Recently she was able to sell the home and have enough
funds to purchase land in the new area we are building
in Loma de la Bestia. The funds are sufficient for us to
build her and her grandchildren new home.

10. DO YOU HAVE A SOFT SPOT IN YOUR HEART FOR THE SENIORS?
In the Dominican Republic many of this marginalized part of the population have
severe challenges.
We usually try to build homes for families with children but when a neighbor of
Pedro sent this photo and asked for help, we couldn’t help looking into this need
further. Pedro feeds himself by collecting beer bottles to recycle for 1 peso for
each. We are trying to help.

11. We continue to raise funds to help Wasner and Annie
and family to have a home. They are in desperate
need. We have 80% of the funds raised. We are
looking for more help. Their home will be built on top
of her grandmother’s home.

12. After many years of looking,
we have found sponsors to
help with Tata’s home. Thank
you so much to the Barno,
Garlock and Mortenson
families who will be have
raised and donated funds to
make this blessing possible!!
The home will be demolished
in preparation for the new one
on June 19 with volunteers
from Ayuda Humanitarian.

13. The project approved and funded by
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-
Day-Saints has been started at the
Youth Upliftment School.
Humanitarian Missionaries attended
the 10th anniversary celebration at the
Youth Upliftment School in October of
2022. Impressed with what they saw,
they invited Dominican Starfish
Foundation to apply to the church to
add an additional 2 rooms to the
school and provide 100 new desks.
This was approved and Fernando,
Miguel and their team started the
construction in April.
The date for completion is expected to
be November 10, 2023!

14. It’s been less than six weeks since construction began on
the school and the ceiling has already been poured on
the first level and the second level has been started.
Thanks to LDS Charities for the amazing donation
and to our tremendous team of construction
workers!

15. Dominican
Starfish
Foundation is in
the people
business. Our
motto is to
make a
difference to
“that one”, one
person, one
family, one
school class,
one
marginalized
group at a time.
We continue to support university students,
high school students and a sponsorship
program in the Youth Upliftment School, as
well as sponsor vocational classes.

16. We have been helping to support women in the Dominican
Republic to be trained to be hairdressers and estheticians. We
helped to build a center for them where they can have
employment.

17. Judi, one of the students
who is being helped
through dental school by
Joan Harker and her family,
is already giving back in
her own community.

18. We helped Dr. Clarens Descorias
to become a doctor. He was
recently sponsored for a trip to
the United States where he is
working on bringing help to his
community in the Dominican
Republic.

19. Another month
has flown by.
We are looking
forward to June
where we will
be spending
time partnering
with Ayuda
Humanitarian
on the ground
in the
Dominican
Republic.
They will be
providing
dental and
medical
services to
hundreds of
those in need.
