January 2024. Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) is a framework that helps investors evaluate how a company manages risk and opportunities around sustainability issues. ESG takes a comprehensive view that extends beyond the environmental aspect to include the social and corporate governance aspects. ESG metrics are non-financial indicators that evaluate companies' ESG performance. They are quantitative, such as GHG emissions; and qualitative, such as Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). ESG reporting is the public disclosure of ESG data. Its purpose is to shed light on a company’s ESG activities and improve transparency with investors. ESG reporting offers many advantages to a business, including improved reputation, being more attractive to investors, competitive advantage, improved performance, resilient and sustainable business, capacity building, and climate change mitigation. However, ESG reporting faces challenges such as the lack of a universal standard, being complex requiring specialized expertise, risk of greenwashing, and constantly changing regulations. An ESG framework is a structured approach to ESG reporting. Using an ESG framework produces measurable, actionable, and credible results. ESG standards translate ESG framework principles into action by specifying factors such as metrics, methodologies, and reporting formats. The absence of a universal ESG reporting standard has resulted in reliance on various standards. The most commonly used ESG reporting standards include Task Force on Climate related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and United Nations Global Compact (UNGC). ESG compliance refers to meeting or exceeding ESG guidelines established by the compliance frameworks and regulatory bodies. An ESG rating, also called an ESG score, provides a benchmark for investors to evaluate a company’s ESG performance and compare it to other companies. Policy wise, the Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) initiative was launched in 2009 to improve corporate transparency and performance on ESG issues. The SSE is coordinated by United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), and UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA). The divestitures we are seeing by major players such as GPIF, Norwegian Oil Fund, CalSTRS as well as many smaller endowment funds.
Has this led to an increase in PE activity in the affected sectors, the driver is that the –what can be seen as forced- selling leading to said companies trading at a discount in public markets. Which leads to the question: through ESG conscious funds investing inline with their principles, do they end up bounding their returns (in the case of tobacco divestment) and arguably making the companies who are deemed poor on the E and S vector less transparent and accountable.

May 2024. Sustainable Clothing, also called Sustainable Fashion, or Sustainable Apparel, is a type of clothing that is designed, manufactured, marketed, worn, and recycled with minimal impact on the environment, such as reduced waste, carbon emissions and energy consumption.
Sustainable clothing is made of biodegradable materials derived from natural or recycled fabric, which reduces energy, water, emissions, and chemical consumption, lowering the overall carbon footprint and pollution.
Sustainable clothing benefits and advantages:
(1) Economic: Saves on resource and energy costs. Increases revenue as environmentally conscious consumers choose sustainable clothing.
(2) Social: Improves the health, well-being, and social responsibility of both employees and consumers.

Demand for electricity is expected to rise as a result of the clean energy transition, urban expansion, and population growth. Smart grid technologies can meet the increased demand by making the grids more efficient, reliable, and resilient. A smart meter is an electronic device that provides detailed consumption data including smart grid status. Smart meter use encourages better energy habits, reduces electricity bills, and improves Quality of Service (QoS).
Compared to conventional grids, smart grids offer many benefits such as emissions and pollution reduction, health and wellbeing improvement, new job creation, and saving on energy, resources, and waste management costs.
However, smart grid adoption faces some challenges, such as privacy issues concerning consumer's usage data and personal information. In addition, smart grids are vulnerable to cyberattacks because they are always connected to the network.
Smart grid technologies include Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), Demand Response (DR), Wide-Area Situational Awareness (WASA), Distributed Energy Resources (DER), and Distribution Management System (DMS). The smart grid value chain includes generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption.
Policy wise, in 2015, the Global Energy Interconnection (GEI) initiative was launched to develop interconnected grids for the transmission and consumption of clean, renewable energy worldwide. GEI is coordinated by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO). Green Airport certification is a program for airports demonstrating environmental sustainability. It measures performance in energy efficiency, water consumption, waste management, and air quality. The program was developed by the Airports Council International (ACI).
Policy wise, in 2021, during the Conference of the Parties (COP26), the international aviation climate ambition coalition was launched to unite efforts in decarbonizing the aviation industry via the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and SDG development supporting Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) deployment and aligning with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).

Green Building (GB), or sustainable building, is the practice of creating structures using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout the building life-cycle: design, construction, operation, maintenance, and demolition. The most common methods of solid waste management include landfilling, incineration, composting, and recycling.

January 2024. Biodiversity is defined as the variety of life on earth in all its forms. It comprises the number and genetic variety of organisms, species, and biological ecosystems. Biodiversity is considered in terms of species variety, called species richness.
Biodiversity has many benefits, including revenue from agriculture, forests, fisheries, and tourism, stable food supply, job creation, air and water quality improvements, and climate change mitigation.
Biodiversity Loss is the reduction or extinction of species in a specific habitat, resulting in global biodiversity depletion and ecosystem instability and collapse.
Causes of biodiversity loss include deforestation, habitat loss, overhunting, overfishing, urbanization, pollution, invasive species, and climate change.
Biodiversity loss leads to increased extreme weather events, infectious diseases, increased atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, species extinction, and food production decline.
Strategies to combat biodiversity loss include sustainable forestry and agriculture, public awareness and education, reforestation, habitat restoration, decarbonization, pollution reduction, government policies, renewable energy, and invasive species control.
Policy wise, in 2022, during the United Nations biodiversity conference, the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) was adopted to mitigate biodiversity loss and to halt overhunting and overfishing, pollution, and unsustainable agricultural practices. Healthcare Waste Management
January 2024. Healthcare Waste (HCW), also called Medical Waste, refers to the hazardous and non-hazardous waste generated from healthcare facilities, including used needles, blood, body parts, chemicals, diagnostic samples, medical devices, and pharmaceuticals.
HCW sources include hospitals, laboratories, blood banks, dental clinics, ambulance centers, nursing homes, autopsy centers, veterinary clinics, and medical colleges.
Hazardous HCW types include infectious, pathological, pharmaceutical, genotoxic, and radioactive.
Non-hazardous HCW types include paper, plastic packaging, food (organic), aerosols, electronics, and glass.
Improper handling and disposal of HCW has negative impacts on the environment, human health, and on the economy: Incineration of waste produces carbon and GHG emissions, releases harmful pollutants, and can contaminate groundwater. Health risks include transmission of infectious diseases, radiation burns, immune and endocrine system impairment. Economically, lack of recycling leads to increased waste volume and higher landfill costs, while lost productivity is due to health problems associated with exposure to contaminants. Healthcare facilities failing to comply face large fines.
Healthcare Waste Management (HCWM) is defined as the sustainable disposal of HCW using environmentally safe and cost-effective technologies while minimizing health risks associated with waste handling.
A sustainable HCW management strategy aims to avoid creating HCW from the beginning, or minimizing it to a large degree by (1) Using recyclable materials and biodegradable plastics (2) Reusing items such as glass, ceramic cups, and thermometers (3) Reducing packaging and medication waste and (4) Using food waste for compost and biofuel production.
Sustainable HCW management stages are (1) Collection by healthcare facility staff (2) Segregation of waste into regular non-hazardous waste, which will be sent to conventional municipal treatment facilities, and HCW. (3) Transportation of HCW from the healthcare facility to HCW treatment facility (4) Treatment using appropriate methods to achieve desired disinfection and (5) Disposal of treated waste in a HCW designated landfill.
Policy wise, in 2015, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) launched a global initiative to ensure adequate water, sanitation and hygiene services in healthcare facilities, including addressing proper HCW treatment. Successful and sustainable global HCW management system can significantly contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3, 6, 8 ,12, and 13.

The IoT based smart farming cycle stages are observation, diagnostic, decision, and finally, action.
Smart farming applications include precision farming, vertical farming, robotic farming, and Agrivoltaics.
Smart farming stakeholders are suppliers, farmers, retailers, consumers, employees, communities, governments, NGOs, Telecom providers, and smart farming equipment manufacturers.
There are many advantages to using smart farming technologies, such as increased production and yield, waste minimization, accuracy and precision improvements, resource and energy conservation, revenue increase, cost reduction, sustainability enhancement, deficiency identification, and the competitive edge over farms not using smart technologies.
However, there are challenges (barriers) to smart farming adoption, such as poor connectivity and network coverage, difficulties for farmers to analyze large data volumes (big data) across multiple growing seasons, lack of knowledge in setting up complex IoT systems for farmers, tough farming conditions, as equipment must withstand extreme weather conditions, the high cost of cutting-edge equipment requiring costly updates, service, and maintenance.

CSA supports the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Water polluted by dyestuffs compounds is a global threat to health and the environment; accordingly, we prepared a green novel sorbent chemical and Physical system from an algae, chitosan and chitosan nanoparticle and impregnated with algae with chitosan nanocomposite for the sorption of Malachite green dye from water. The algae with chitosan nanocomposite by a simple method and used as a recyclable and effective adsorbent for the removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solutions. Algae, chitosan, chitosan nanoparticle and algae with chitosan nanocomposite were characterized using different physicochemical methods. The functional groups and chemical compounds found in algae, chitosan, chitosan algae, chitosan nanoparticle, and chitosan nanoparticle with algae were identified using FTIR, SEM, and TGADTA/DTG techniques. The optimal adsorption conditions, different dosages, pH and Temperature the amount of algae with chitosan nanocomposite were determined. At optimized conditions and the batch equilibrium studies more than 99% of the dye was removed. The adsorption process data matched well kinetics showed that the reaction order for dye varied with pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of the algae with chitosan nanocomposite toward malachite green dye reached as high as 15.5mg/g, respectively. Finally, multiple times reusing of algae with chitosan nanocomposite and removing dye from a real wastewater has made it a promising and attractive option for further practical applications.

The popularity of functional foods among scientists and common people has been increasing day by day. Awareness and modernization make the consumer think better regarding food and nutrition. Now a day’s individual knows very well about the relation between food consumption and disease prevalence. Humans have a diversity of microbes in the gut that together form the gut microflora. Probiotics are the health-promoting live microbial cells improve host health through gut and brain connection and fighting against harmful bacteria. Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus are the two bacterial genera which are considered to be probiotic. These good bacteria are facing challenges of viability. There are so many factors such as sensitivity to heat, pH, acidity, osmotic effect, mechanical shear, chemical components, freezing and storage time as well which affects the viability of probiotics in the dairy food matrix as well as in the gut. Multiple efforts have been done in the past and ongoing in present for these beneficial microbial population stability until their destination in the gut. One of a useful technique known as microencapsulation makes the probiotic effective in the diversified conditions and maintain these microbe’s community to the optimum level for achieving targeted benefits. Dairy products are found to be an ideal vehicle for probiotic incorporation. It has been seen that the encapsulated microbial cells show higher viability than the free cells in different processing and storage conditions as well as against bile salts in the gut. They make the food functional when incorporated, without affecting the product sensory characteristics.

Results of geophysics and pneumatic injection pilot tests during 2003 – 2007 yielded significant positive results for injection delivery design and contaminant mass treatment, resulting in permanent shut-down of an existing groundwater Pump & Treat system.
Accessible source areas were subsequently removed (2011) by soil excavation and treated with the placement of Emulsified Vegetable Oil EVO and zero-valent iron ZVI to accelerate treatment of impacted groundwater in overburden and weathered fractured bedrock. Post pilot test and post remediation groundwater monitoring has included analyses of CVOCs, organic fatty acids, dissolved gases and QuantArray® -Chlor to quantify key microorganisms (e.g., Dehalococcoides, Dehalobacter, etc.) and functional genes (e.g., vinyl chloride reductase, methane monooxygenase, etc.) to assess potential for reductive dechlorination and aerobic cometabolism of CVOCs.
In 2022, the first commercial application of MetaArray™ was performed at the site. MetaArray™ utilizes statistical analysis, such as principal component analysis and multivariate analysis to provide evidence that reductive dechlorination is active or even that it is slowing. This creates actionable data allowing users to save money by making important site management decisions earlier.
The results of the MetaArray™ analysis’ support vector machine (SVM) identified groundwater monitoring wells with a 80% confidence that were characterized as either Limited for Reductive Decholorination or had a High Reductive Reduction Dechlorination potential. The results of MetaArray™ will be used to further optimize the site’s post remediation monitoring program for monitored natural attenuation.

The incorporation of a 3DCSM and completion of HRSC provided a tool for enhanced, data-driven, decisions to support a change in remediation closure strategies. Currently, an approved pilot study has been obtained to shut-down the remediation systems (ISCO, P&T) and conduct a hydraulic study under non-pumping conditions. A separate micro-biological bench scale treatability study was competed that yielded positive results for an emerging innovative technology. As a result, a field pilot study has commenced with results expected in nine-twelve months. With the results of the hydraulic study, field pilot studies and an updated risk assessment leading site monitoring optimization cost lifecycle savings upwards of $15MM towards an alternatively evolved best available technology remediation closure strategy.
