Active Learning Is The Key For Understanding, Not Passive...
Active Learning is the Key to Understanding, Not Passive Learning
According to Paulo Freire, a Brazilian educator and philosopher, the current education lacks teacher
student communication. In his article he reveals that, Instead of communicating, the teacher issues
communiques and makes deposits which the students patiently perceive, memorize, and repeat.
This is the banking concept of education, in which the scope of action allowed to the students
extends only as far as receiving, filing, and storing the deposits.
Basically, Freire s argument is that education should involve student teacher knowledge exchange,
rather than the teacher being the one teaching all the time. As someone who is an educator, Freire
understands that knowledge is a result of active learning rather than passive learning. He likens the
current education to a banking system whereby the teacher just deposits information into the
students empty heads. Freire complains that this type of education does not give students the
understanding they need to connect the material with reality. In fact, he stresses out that students
just memorize what is said by the teacher without understanding the concepts. Due to that, he
further describes how the concepts taught in class seem to be disconnected from reality since the
students cannot relate how education affects their day to day lives.
Although I agree with Freire that education should not be like a banking system, I cannot accept his
overriding assumption

The Religion Of Buddhism And Buddhism
In the world today, there are dozens of religions that have spread all over to many parts of the
world to promote their idea of spiritual enlightenment and peace. One of the interesting things that
occurs with some of these religions is after it spreads to a new area, how it becomes popular with
the people and becomes a part of everyday life. The religion of Buddhismis one of these that had
this effect when it began to spread from India where it originated, to many Asian countries
especially Chinawhere it would have the biggest impact. In China, Buddhism would take root and
would grow to become a popular religion in the country much like the other major religions of
China, Confucianismand Taoism, which together with Buddhism would later be known as the
Three Teachings . Additionally, at some point Buddhism would began to lose its popularity in
India due to Hinduism, which had absorbed some of the features of Buddhism and another
famous religion from India Jainism, in order to re emergence as the major religion of India. In
China, this would not be the case, as it would continue to grow and remain strong long after it
fell out of popularity in India. This study will explore some of the ways of how Buddhism was
able to prosper and survive longer in China where in India it was only able to last until Hinduism
re remerged as the major religion for India. When Buddhism was first arrived in China during the
Han Dynasty (221 207 BC), it did not become popular right away, as

Azacitidine are DNA Methyltransferase Inhibitors
Azacytidine or 5 AZC
Trade Name : Vidaza
Introduction:
Azacitidine are DNA Methyltransferase inhibitors. Azacitidine being an analog for cytidine gets
integrated into the DNA sequence of the DNMT gene, the gene turns dysfunctional, inhibiting the
DNA methyltransferase enzymes which normally methylate DNA.
Azacitidine is used primarily for the treatment of myelodysplastic syndromes or MDS a blood
disorder which affects the bone marrow leading to a low or ineffective production of blood cells.
The cancerous overgrowth of a number of immature cells or blasts and the abnormally developed
or dysplastic cells increase, thereby reducing the cell count of normal red blood cells, white blood
cells, and platelets.
Azacitidine as a chemotherapeutic drug (in low doses) prevents the body from making nucleic
acids required for cell growth of the cancerous cells. This stops the growth of cancer cells and
leads to cell death. Azacitidine also appears to help restore normal growth and differentiation (cell
specialization) in the cells of the bone marrow. This betters the bone marrow production of normal
blood cells.
Discovery:
Azacitidine was first synthesized by Piskala and Sorm in 1964 [Piskala A, Sorm F. (1964). Collect
Czech Chem. Commun., 29: 2060 2076]. It was developed as a nucleoside antimetabolite
specifically used for the treatment of acute myelogenous leukemia (Cihak, 1974;Sorm et al., 1964).
But studies later revealed that this drug inhibited cell mitosis with high

How Is Lennie Justified In Of Mice And Men

The Influence of Religion on Mother Teresa Essay
Religion can impact a person s life through the teachings, and the values and attitudes presented.
The effect which religion can give can either be positive or negative. The effect of the Catholic
religion on mother Teresa was a positive influence, an influence whichever inspired others to follow
her. Agnes Gonxha, or flower bud , the translation of Gonxha, was the birth name which Mother
Teresawas given by her parents. Her family took religion quite seriously, and which in turn lead
Agnes to be a religious person known by many. Though Mother Teresa sparked the world with her
attitude of helping others and showing the example of God s love, she never claimed to be anyone

This lead her to follow God s will, and become a teacher at St Mary s school, and later become
the principle of this school. At the school Mother Teresa, taught history, english and a couple of
other subjects to teach the children at the schools. She loved the kids as if they were her own,
and equally. Mother Teresa s second calling was the call to care for the people in the slums of
Calcutta, but to do so she needed permission from her superiors, as at this stage Mother Teresa
was the principle at St Mary s. In the following year, Mother Teresa began her work which
obeyed God s call fro her to look after the poor, sick and dying in the streets. Through many
difficulties, Mother Teresa obeyed and followed the work which God led her to do, her lives
work, and influenced her into making these decisions. The vow of obedience, influence Mother
Teresa greatly, in following orders from superiors, and God himself. As said by Mother Teresa,
...by faith, I am catholic. As to my calling, I belong to the world... , her calling brought her closer
to the world, and the calling itself influenced the work which Mother Teresa is known of doing.
In Calcutta, and around the world, Mother Teresa aided poor, dying and sick through her love for
everyone, and the vow of poverty as her influence. A nun, though the vow of poverty, is to imitate
Jesus in his helping of those that were poor and suffering. Though Mother Teresa was poor herself,

Abstraction Of The United States Through The Twentieth...
Abstraction in the United States Through the Twentieth Century Abstraction is the creation of
art without representation of objects, in which the artist has total freedom of the art that they
are creating. I will be using three paintings from three different time periods in order to show the
development and lasting effects of abstraction in the twentieth century. The first work that I will
be looking at is Foghorns by Arthur Dove. I will use this piece to show the beginning of
abstraction, and how ideas of abstraction were present before the movement began. The second
painting that I will be looking at is Jackson Pollock s Lucifer. I will be using this painting as an
example of the height of abstraction in the 20th century and will be discussing Pollock s
influence on abstraction. The third piece of art I will be looking at is Many Mansion by Kerry
James Marshall. I will use this work to show the remnants of Pollock s influence, and the
influence of abstraction in general, on art in the later half of the century. For the development of
this paper I looked at two of the course readings. The first reading that I used was The Tradition
of the New by Harold Rosenberg. I used this article to show how Foghorns by Arthur Dove relates
to abstraction, and to show how ideas in creation of this painting can be linked to ideas of abstract
art. The second reading that I used for this paper was The Legacy of Jackson Pollock by Alan
Kaprow. I used this article to gain information about

Symptoms And Treatment Of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
FASDs are defined as an umbrella term describing the range of effects that can occur in an
individual whose mother drank alcohol during pregnancy (Caley, Kramer, and Robinson, 2005, p.
139). Alcohol has a teratogenic effect on the brain, and each child inside the uterus is affected
differently. FASD is not a clinical diagnosis (Caley et al., 2005). Currently the diagnoses under
FASD include fetal alcohol syndrome(FAS), partial fetal alcohol syndrome (pFAS), alcohol related
neurodevelopmental disorder (ARND), and alcohol related birth defects (ARBD) (Bertrand, 2009).
FAS is considered the most severe of the FASD diagnosis and is compriseds of facial dysmorphia

Green (2007) emphasized that FASDs cognitive and behavioral effects can and do develop
separately from the physical facial characteristics.
Overall, children and adults with FASDs are faceing a lifelong challenge ofwith lifelong,
negative effects of the brain and CNS damage. As a result, children with FASD can have a wide
range of physical, cognitive, social, mental, and behavioral effects (Caley et al., 2005). FASDs
presents in each person differently. Carpenter (2011) says that A number of factors, such as the
pattern and timing of alcohol consumption, the stage of foetal development, and social behavioural
factors, such as poverty and smoking, may exacerbate the impact of alcohol (p. 37).
In addition to the facial features, other physical effects can include malformations, deficits in
motors skills and some children even present with seizures. The cognitive impact can also be very
damaging to a child. They can have a learning disability, mental retardation, memory deficits,
information processing disorders, a lack of executive functioning skills, can inconsistently perform
in abstract and generalizing tasks (they struggle to relate and build upon previous knowledge), and
they often lack cognitive flexibility. Executive functioning is important for a student in the
classroom. A student needs these skills for paying attention,

Swatch and the Global Watch Industry
1. How did Timex succeed the Swiss as world volume leader in the 1950s and 1960s?
Timex toppled the world dominance of the Swiss by streamlining the watch making process
therefore also making the process very scaleable. The Swiss had dominated in an era where very
little competition existed. This paved the way for the Swiss and their high cost watch producers to
remain dominant as consumers really had no alternative to turn to.
Timex introduced watches using a combination of automation, precision tooling, and simpler design
then their Swiss rivals. The Timex movements also incorporated new hard alloy bearings rather
than expensive jewels used by the Swiss. All this lead to efficient and effective automation of
Timex production lines, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Swatch slashed the number of individual parts that a watch required from 91 to 51 and began
housing them in an easily mass produced plastic case. With this formula, the Swiss made a
breakthrough into the global watch industry by producing high quality, inexpensive watch in
Switzerland.
Marketing was also a key area which had to be looked at for Swatch to fully resuscitate the overall
Swiss watch industry. To do this for them, Swatch decided that to do it right, marketing should be
outsourced to specialists. Franz Sprecher, an independent consultant, helped to transition the image
of the Swiss watch from a very expensive, traditional timekeeping instrument to an inexpensive
lifestyle symbol and fashion accessory. Swatch followed this lead and also did a good job in
producing very trendy watches with very colorful designs. There was a Swatch created for every
occasion. This new approach in marketing and manufacturing sealed the deal for Swatch and was
an instant hit propelling the Swiss watch industry to the forefront of the watch manufacturing
industry.
With the success of Swatch and their new alternative approach to marketing and design, media
quickly became very interested. Swatch realized that this was a perfect way to embrace free public
publicity. Swatch embraced the media. This hand in hand cooperation with the media resulted in lots

The Importance Of Discrimination In The Film Industry
the main synonym neither to the discrimination in the industry nor the lack of female
professionals. Discrimination is not only lack of representation of the gender, but in this case
also representation of only a small pool of women specialists (Paydar 5). The same female actors,
directors, producers, writers, etc. are hired repeatedly, mostly those connected to the males at the
top of the hierarchical ladder or having had experience and success with the same studio before
(John 432 437). Existence of female professionals and hiring of a female for a project does not
indicate the overcoming of systemic barriers. The question is not only in the number or percentage
of women involved in the production, but about diversity and equal opportunities. Another
component of initial hiring practices in filmstudios is correlation with law and associations
requirements. Diversity requirement that is standard for the industry usually poses a quota that
allows the employer to hire females or maleminorities. By providing a choice of hiring a male of
color or a female, this provision allows studios to evade anti discriminationlaws (Paydar 8).
Fighting all these exclusions based on sex and discrimination practices is possible mostly by
individual court orders through several claims available to women within US laws (Bureau of
National Affairs). However, there is a limited number of women in any field of the film industry
who would go to court suing multimillion studios that control a

A Short Note On Maximal Oxygen Consumption ( Vo2max )
Introduction Maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), the highest recorded rate of oxygen
consumption during a graded and exhaustive exercise test, is a top indicator of cardio pulmonary
endurance in humans and is believed to correlate with overall health (Strijk, Proper, Klaver,
Beek, Mechelen, 2010). VO2max of an individual declines with age regardless of exercise
status, but exercise may lead to a significantly slower decline in VO2max during the aging
process (Katzel, Sorkin, Fleg, 2001) Many factors related to aging such as decrease of maximal
heart rate, stroke volume, the gain of body mass, decreased muscle mass, and decreased health
status are thought to be the primary contributing factors leading to a decline in VO2max
(Grimsmo, Arnesen, Maehlum, 2010). Individuals that have decreased their physical activity
levels or developed health problems had a greater decline in VO2max values, over a longitudinal
study, than their healthy counterparts (Grimsmo et al., 2010). Chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease (COPD) affects individuals by causing airflow restriction, impairing their exercise
capacity (Ortega, Montemayor, Sanchez, Cabello, 1995). A VO2max test has the ability to help
identify COPD that may not have been apparent prior to this test and can indicate the severity of
the disease (Ortega et al, 1995). One metabolic equivalent of task (MET) is the amount of energy
used to sit in a chair for one minute which is equivalent to a VO2max value of 3.5ml/kg/min

Use Of Allusions In Pleasantville To Kill A Mockingbird
Pleasantville and To Kill a Mockingbird
Intertextual Study
Intertextuality is an important element in American director, Gary Ross , 1998 comedy drama
postmodernist film, Pleasantville . Through the use of allusion, parody, pastiche, cinematography
and character referencing or alluding to other works of fiction, intertextuality shapes the meaning of
a text. Ross ideas about change and how to cope with it are conveyed using intertextuality, often in
the form of textual and/or historical allusions.
The classic 1960 novel, To Kill a Mockingbird , written by well known American novelist Harper
Lee is an allusion used by Ross to convey changes that were taking place in the relative time frame

The knowledge that Bud and his sister Mary Sue Parker, the other main character in the film,
impart on the people of Pleasantville (especially the young people) seems to connect to the story
of the forbidden fruit in the Bible. The first instance of their knowledge from their world making
changes in Pleasantville is when Mary Sue takes Skip Martin, her love interest, to a place called
Lover s Lane . No one in Pleasantville had ever experienced anything sexual, even the parents of
children, before this moment and it has a drastic impact on Skip, and later his basketball
teammates when he tells them what happened. This is also the first time something comes into
colour in Pleasantville, and Skip is the first person to witness this event due to the revelation
that he has gone through. Soon as the news spreads around, other young people start
experimenting sexually and sex becomes a common practice at Lover s Lane. Lover s Lane is
an allusion to the tree of knowledge in the Bible as it is where the first changes in views of the
townspeople take place. The town of Pleasantville is therefore representative of the Garden of
Eden where everything is perfect in the eyes of the monochrome townspeople. Later Mary Sue s
mother, Betty Parker, is curious as to what actually goes on at Lover s Lane, to which Mary Sue
explains. Betty does not seem shocked or disgusted as she has never experienced or known about
anything Mary Sue is talking about. She responds by saying, your father would never do anything
like that indicating that she has a curiosity to try what Mary Sue describes but she believes there is
no way. Mary Sue then tells her, Well, you know, Mum, there are other ways to enjoy yourself...

Plight of the Little Emperors
Amy F.09/14/2014 ENGL 111 In Plight of the Little Emperors by Taylor Clark the article talks
about the difficulties of young children growing up in China. The article talks about how some
mothers who gave up their employment to monitor their children s studies and also go to school
with them, just to make sure their children succeed. Parents even monitor their children s five
plus hours of nightly homework. Children aren t allowed to watch television until the homework
is done. The children s whole future hinged on just one test. It is China s version of the SAT s,

A lot of the children try to escape through on line gaming. They buckle under the pressure at the
universities and stop going to classes. The term depression didn t even exist in China in the 20th
century and there was no vocabulary for it. The children were thought to be anti social. If the
children were depressed they were thought to be impure and they were sent to a labor camp. But
now they have more knowledge about mental health. They have even set up crisis hot lines, and
China is taking steps to take the pressure off young children. After I read this article I disagree a
lot with, I thought I am glad I don t live in China. I think children should be allowed to be
children. I don t think your whole life should depend on just one test. The parents giving up so
much for their children in the hopes of them passing a test just amazes me. Reading this article it
talks about how hard of a life the children have, but what about the parents? They are sacrificing
their whole life on their one child, in the hopes of them succeeding and taking care of them in
their old age, which I do agree with children taking care of their parents when they get older. The
way I was raised, you do take care of your parents when they get older. I disagree with a child s
whole future resting on just one test. That puts so much pressure on children to do well at such a
young age. I can see why children get depressed, if

In the area once famous for being home to Count Dracula, that we call Transylvania, at remote
village named Sapanta lies a graveyard that has attracted worldwide attention. The reason for this
is simply the fact that the people here do not lay lost loved ones to rest in any sombre fashion as
one might expect but more as a celebration of their lives.
This remarkable place is aptly dubbed the Merry Cemetery, simply because the bereaved celebrate
their lost ones with colourful crosses and the whole place reverberates with an atmosphere of

The Impact Of The Internet And The Computer Revolution
INTORDUCTION
The computer revolution that started in middle of the 20th Century is potentially just as significant
as the industrial revolution that began two centuries before it and may well turn out to have even
more impact on the way that human beings live, work and communicate with each other. One of
the major developments to come out of the advances in computer and communication technology
was the creation of the internet, an innovation with effects on the economic and social development
of humanity that are still evolving and being assessed .2
The internet revolution has transformed the way we live, work, communicate and do business,
creating new techniques that are a feature of our daily lives. The effects may not all be positive,
however. Increasing restrictions and spying by governments, individual privacy, child pornography,
Internet frauds, bullying are just a few examples of negatives that the internet has brought with it.
Usage of Internet
Internet availability is not limited to computers or laptops now a days. Even mobile phones with
internet facility are available at affordable process helping indirectly the internet to reach maximum
number of users. In the recent years everything is related or trying to relate to internet. Television
took more than 25 years to reach 10 million users where as computers took more than 10 years to
reach the same number. But internet took less than 5 years to reach the same number.
In developing countries like India more than 40% of people are using internet and the purposes of
internet usage is diverse. People are using internet for social networking, to know news instantly, to
listen to music, to search or know something etc.3
Many positive and negative aspects of the internet affect our society. One major impact the internet
is used for today is communication for people working. Communication has a positive

Brief Explanation of the Basic Framework of the Principal...
PRELIMINARIES
This section expands a brief explanation of the basic frame work of the principal component
analysis and fuzzy logic, along with some of the key basic concepts.
A. The principal component analysis (PCA)
The Principal component analysis (PCA) is an essential technique in data compression and feature
reduction [13] and it is a statistical technique applied to reduce a set of correlated variables to
smaller uncorrelated variables to each other. PCA is considered as special transformation which
produces the principal components (PCs) Known as eigenvectors. PCs are sorted decreasing i.e. the
first prin cipal component (PC

to reduce redundancy and uncertainty. So this paper used the PCA as the preprocessing step on the

a significant impact on the data.
B. Fuzzy logic
Zadeh [15] introduced the concept of fuzzy logic to present vagueness in linguistics, and to
implement and express human knowledge and inference capability in a natural way. The fuzzy
logic starts with the concept of fuzzy sets which is defined as a set without a crisp. It is clearly
defined boundary and can contain elements with only a partial degree of member ship. The main
power of fuzzy logic image processing is in the middle step (membership function) [16] A
membership function defines how each value in the input space is mapped to a membership
value (or degree of membership) between the range of 0 and 1. LetXbe the input space andxbe a
generic element ofX. A classical set Ais defined as a collection of elements or objectsx2X, such that
each xcan either belong or not belong to the setA, AvX.

Analyzing Jeannette Gladwell s Outliers
1.In Outliers, Gladwell describes the 10,000 hour rule, stating that it takes approximately 10,000
hours of practice to become an expert at something. Jeanette Walls becomes successful largely
through her writing. First, she worked on her high school s newspaper for 5 years, first as editor
and eventually as the main reporter and editor in chief. This provided her with the basis of her
many hours of practice. When she moves to New York, she gets to do an internship at a small
news outpost during her senior year of high school. After graduating, she lands a job there. She
spends countless hours writing to add to her preexisting experience with her high school
newspaper. By the time she reaches college, she has been writing for thousands of hours, gaining
the priceless experience that Gladwell would say helped her towards her success.

Opposite of Jeanette, her father Rex does not have a successful life. A factor that may have
contributed to this is his natural aversion to authority. According to Outliers, this aversion may
have been a result of his lower class upbringing. Gladwell suggests that in lower class families,
children are not raised to expect to be treated by authority figures with some degree of respect and
are not taught how to influence a social situation to fit their own needs. Rex Walls is constantly
running away from the FBI, and distrusts even doctors and nurses in hospitals. He most often
chooses to flee rather than face confrontation about his problems. These both align with Gladwell s
claims; therefore, his lack of success in his life can partially be attributed to his

The Primate Family Tree By Ian Redmond
Use of Metaphor in The Primate Family Tree
Although some may think of metaphor as ornamental and inapplicable for use in subjects other than
English literature, metaphors are necessary for communication in all disciplines. The use of
metaphor is crucial in the field of education because one cannot understand completely new ideas
without making a connection to previously known information (Oshlag and Petrie). Textbooks
readily employ metaphor to convey new information to students. Pages 28 29 of The Primate
Family Tree by Ian Redmond illustrates the evolution of primates through a diagram of a tree and
describes how the theory of evolution has changed since the nineteenth century. The Primate Family
Tree willfully utilizes metaphors regarding abstract complex systems and the Great Chain of Being
to explain scientific concepts to an audience that is uneducated in complex zoological and
evolutionary processes. Two main metaphor systems categorize many metaphorical expressions: the
Great Chain of Being system and the Event Structure system (Kovecses 151). The Great Chain
system is based on a vertical scale of complexity, or being, and accounts for how one conceptually
analyzes metaphors that compare two things or nouns (Kovecses 151). The Great Chain metaphor
is prevalent in English literature to describe both comparisons and differences between nouns. One
can better interpret a complex thing, such as a human, by making comparisons between the human
and another noun that

An Agile Software Application Development Essay
The top reason for adopting an Agile software application development approach is that it
promotes a culture of collaboration and continuous feedback that concentrates on early delivery of

Cloud Computing, Virtualization And Virtual Machine
As for the requirement of the course, I would like to request for the permission to write the
course report on Cloud computing, virtualization and virtual machine . The report will intend to
provide readers the basic knowledge of how the cloud service work, what virtualization is and
how various institution is using the technology. I have done the basic research for the topic and
have come to the conclusion that I will be able to write an acceptable report on the topic. My
experience at work has also provided me with practical experience related to the topic.
Cloud and Virtualization
Cloud computing and virtualization allows versatility regarding accessibility of service from
remote location.
Cloud Computing
Cloud computing is the idea where application runs on a remote server that is provided as a
commercial service by a company rather than an institution or individual s local machine. Cloud
computing has made possible to provided Software as a Service, Platform as a Service and
Infrastructure as a Service (Beaty, 2013,p. 88 93)
Virtualization
Virtualization allows one or more physical servers to be connected and configured in a way that it
presents itself as a single physical machine with large resource. The user can then divide the
resource based on the need of the application and service. The most recent use of this service today
in enterprise and institution is creating virtual machine for virtual desktops and virtual servers.

The Latino And Latino Community
The Hispanic/Latino community has been known to be underrepresented on college campuses, both
at the community college and four year university level. Factors such as low income households,
poor or harsh living conditions, under educated parents, cultural and family commitments, and
unfamiliarity with the collegeprocess, all serve as unfortunate barriers that keep Hispanic/Latino
students from reaching the goal of attaining college degrees. Although these barriers keep many
students from succeeding, many others overcome these obstacles and continue on their paths to
creating a better future for themselves. They choose to look past the expectations that society has
for them and break out of the stereotypical mold. However, Hispanic/Latino students face, yet,
another challenge upon successfully making it on to a college campus... the challenge of graduating.
Regardless of the type of institution, retention is one of the biggest issues that colleges encounter
with the Hispanic/Latino population. The question has been posed for quite some time: What can
colleges do to, not only keep these students on campus, but also to prepare them for the challenges
they may face when transferring to a four year school? Various programs on college campuses
across the state of California have been implemented in the past couple of decades to help address
this question. The existence of such programs, like Educational Opportunity Program (EOP),

Tricking And Tripping Claire Sterk Summary
Claire E. Sterk s article Tricking and Tripping: Fieldwork on Prostitution in Era of AIDS published
by Social Change Press in 2000 takes into account the patterns and procedures that anthropologists
take into practice during fieldwork. She provides some useful insights and learnt lessons during her
studies with prostitutes. She also provides a close and intimate account of their lives and mental
state in their own words. Her findings are substantiated with proper examples in the accounts of the
daily lives of these women. Unlike most student s expectation of fieldwork as a leisure activity at
some serene place, Sterk observes the pain associated with the lifestyle and brings into light some
important patterns and procedures that anthropologists must consider while interviewing a research
group. Sterk establishes her point of view about importance of general study of culture by
provoking the essential human quality of compassion. She does so by describing the prostitutes as
not alien and showing fine human qualities. Their habitual formations and mental qualities are like
other ordinary humans. She emphasizes this theme by highlighting a poem written by a prostitute.
The whole purpose of this initial exercise is to create consideration among readers about the lives
and activities of prostitutes.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

becoming more and more of an epidemic. During this time period prostitutes were seen as one of

majority of society. When Sterk observed these women in their time of leisure and shows the
aspects of their personality outside their line of work it humanized the women and displayed that
they were merely people who are in an unfortunate

What Was The Causes Of The World War Essay
It all started on September 30th, 1938 when France, Germany and Great Britain signed the
Munich Agreement. This agreement gave Germany the authority to take over a part of
Czechoslovakia known as Sudetenland. The two allies hoped that Hitler would be satisfied and
leave them out of the war. Hitler however, went against the agreement and having invaded
Sudetenland, went further and invaded the whole of Czechoslovakia. On September 1st, 1939,
almost one year after the Munich agreement German invaded Poland, World War II had begun.
Causes of World War II There are many causes of the war. Some date back to the end of World

A Report On Aedes Albopictus
3.BACKGROUND AND LITERATURE REVIEW
3.1INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT
Aedes albopictus is considered to be the most invasive mosquito species in the world (1, 2) and
there is an increased potential for its introduction into mainland Australia given the established
populations discovered, since 2005, in the Torres Strait, the region that sandwiches between Papua
New Guinea (PNG) and northern Australia (3). The aedine mosquito species have been culpably
involved in the transmission cycles of pathogens of public health importance (1). Aedes albopictus
is known to have both field and laboratory proven vector competence for a number of emerging
and re emerging viruses including chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and dengue virus (DENV).
CHIKV and DENV are arthropod borne (arboviruses) viruses transmitted by the Aedes genus (4).
Dengue is considered the most important arboviral disease in the world affecting 390 million
people every year (5, 6), and CHIKV has continued to conquer new territories; charting an
unprecedented worldwide expansion (7 11). In Australia, dengue outbreaks occur regularly in
northern Queensland where there is Aedes aegypti (12 14). Between November 2008 and May 2009,
more than one thousand confirmed autochthonous cases of dengue were recorded in Cairns, north
Queensland, and Aedes aegypti, the only competent dengue vector, at the time, was implicated.
There is increasing global concern about recent outbreaks of pathogenic arboviruses from diverse
viral families including

Cricothyroid Stereotypes
Regardless of gender, humans tend to start their lives with similar capacities and productions. All
genders are born with a larynx, our primary organ for vibration, which biologically functions to
keep air flowing through the respiratory system and keep foreign objects out. Additionally, children
s vocal foldshave an average fundamental frequency, or vocal fold vibration, of 250 Hz per
second. However, the larynxalso has the nonbiological function of acting as a vibratory source for
speech. This is a complex system and so produces a lot of variety in speech, particularly between
men and women. Therefore, vocal production becomes indicative of how a person is perceived,
partially based on societal assumptions. For cisgender individuals this results in an accurate

Cricothyroid approximation involves moving the cricoid cartilage backward and upward and
thyroid cartilage forward and downward.
The cricothyroid allows the thyroid to rock while the cricoid is stationary, causing the folds to
stretch; performing surgery on it brings the cartilages closer together, increasing tension, and
thereby allows one to achieve a more desired pitch. This surgery is done through a neck incision,
which makes the Adam s apple look smaller, possibly giving the individual a more preferred look
in addition to the pitch change.
For Commissure advancement, a center strip of the anterior commissure is cut from the thyroid
cartilage. The vocal cords are then detached in the subperichondrial plane, and the cartilage strip is
advanced and secured using a metal splint (American, 2003). A successful surgery tightens and
increases tension in the vocal folds. Commissure advancement and endolaryngeal shortening can

Before their journey began, they encountered a shortcut discovered by Hastings. Like any other

many key elements leading to the misfortune of this group.
From the beginning of their journey, the Donner party made mistakes. First of all, at the time of the

Then they ran into a man by the last name of Kleiman. He warned the group that the road ahead
was very tough and that Hastings had trouble on the route himself. Kleiman told Mr. Donner NOT
to take Hastings route, but the Donner party continued despite their warning. Mr. Hastings
promised the party that he would wait for them at a fort along the way to California. When the
party reached the fort, Hastings had already gone ahead a week earlier with another group. He left
simple instructions for the Donner party to follow telling them it would not take long to get to Salt
Lake. Then they turned off track into the wilderness. It took 6 days to chop through to Big
Mountain and one month to reach Salt Lake rather than the week they had been promised. After 3
days they ran out of water and Reed s oxen ran away and could not be found. Thirty six oxen were
lost and wagons had to be left behind in order to get over the mountain. Then Reed killed
Schneider because he was whipping the oxen. Everyone was going mad. Indians killed 21 more
oxen and then the Donner axle broke on the first wagon. To make things worse, they encountered
blizzard like snow and sleet. If they had rested 4 days instead of 5 they would have made it through
to California safely without having to deal with any of the conditions mentioned above. It turns out
that Hastings shortcut was actually

The Pros And Cons Of Biological Warfare
Throughout the course of history, several methods of warfare have been practiced. One of the
standard procedures for war is to use weapons such as pistols, shotguns, grenades, and automatic
infantry. The other method is known as biological warfare, which is the use of diseases and other
biological agents to harm enemies or citizens of an opposing country. Considering that the world
flourishes in science today, scientists are researching for more efficient ways to handle war, which
is were biological warfare comes in. After this method was discovered, many armies looked to it as
the savior of war. Unfortunately, people are not aware of the many consequences that biological
warfare holds.
Biological weaponry offers a couple of positives. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Biological warfare presents many problems compared to the positives. First off, biological
weapons can potentially live in infected areas for long periods of time. For example, one of the
more common diseases used in biological warfare is Anthrax. Anthrax has the capability to
transform into spores which protects the bacteria for decades (Hoyle). This offers the chance of
spreading the biological agent in the future to other people who were unintended targets. Another
example is the incapacitating agent known as the bomblet. When used, the bomblet leaves a
remainder of five percent of the agent behind (Eitzen). If the leftover agent is identified, the
opponent can research and produce a medical treatment, rendering the agent useless. Another major
disadvantage relates to the U.S. The knowledge of the general population is that the U.S. holds no
biological weapons (Eitzen). If this is true, another country could easily attack us with biological
agents and the U.S. army would not know how to approach such a devastating hit. Although
biological warfare is cost effective, this means enemies can get ahold of the agents easier and
research more. I believe that if a group of terrorists were to spend a decent amount of time studying
the agent and manipulating it, the agent could become super

The Architecture Of The Golden Temple
The Architecture
The Golden Temple, Harmandir Sahib is special because it is the only temple that builds in the
middle of square tanks and there is water all around the temple. Besides that, it is famous for its
architectures and the glittering combination of pure gold domes and pure white marble. In
addition, the exterior of the temple is covered with gold and it is looks amazingly beautiful

that, there are 100kg of gold were applied and decorative marble was added to the inverted Lotus

four different directions entrances which symbolizes people from four directions of the earth are
welcome to enter the temple. Lastly, the architecture of the Golden Temple draws and paints on
both Hindu and Muslim artistic styles. It represents a unique co evolution of the two styles. Last
but not least, most of the temples have statues inside or outside of the temple, but Golden temple

Coca Cola have maintained a steady asset turnover ratio 0f 2.51 and 2.50 in 2010 and 2011
respectively. Due to Coca Cola having high sales and relatively low assets, their asset turnover
is likely to be high and earn a low profit on each sale. If Coca Cola wish to improve their asset
turnover ratio, they could improve their sales performance or dispose of surplus or
underutilised assets. Inventory turnover measures the company s success in converting
inventories into sales. Coca Cola s current inventory turnover has been 62 days in 2010 and 76.2
days in 2011. This is a relatively high number, meaning Coca Cola sell their entire inventories
5.89 and 4.79 times a year. This high figure could be due to obsolete inventories, whereas a lower
figure would indicate a more efficient business, because they would sell their inventories more
times a year. To improve their inventory turnover, Coca Cola could hold lower levels of
inventories or achieve higher sales without increasing their levels of inventories. Receivables (or
debtors ) days calculates the time typically taken by a business to collect the money that it is
owed, This is an important ratio, because granting customers lengthy periods of trade credit may
result in a business experiencing liquidity and cash flow problems. Coca Cola have had receivables
days of 38.6 days in 2010 and 46 days in 2011. The lower the figure the better,

Hunger Games Dystopia
Imagine living in a society where the government watches their citizens every move. A place where
even the smallest mistakes and acts of independance are punishable by death. According the many
sci fi, fantasy authors this is what it would be like living in a dystopian future. Dystopian societies
are undesirable, fearful societies usually due to a government who does not care about its citizens.
Dystopian fictionis a fast growing genre of literature. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and
Divergent by Veronica Roth are both books which take place in a dystopian future. The Hunger
Games is based in a dystopian North America, called Panem. Panem is separated into the Capitol,

character leading the revolution. In The Hunger Games Katniss is this leader. When she is

to the attempted suicides makes the citizens of Panem aware that their government can be beat,
there is something that they can do to stop Snow. Tris, from Divergent, acts as the character who
shows this to the rebels. She grows up in Abnegation, the faction that no one believes could fight
against Jeanine. The Abnegation are called stiffs because they are believed to be uptight. During
Dauntless initiation everyone is surprised that a stiff [is] the first to jump (Roth 60) when their
bravery is being tested. Tris proves that the Abnegation are capable of fighting. However, the
Abnegation is still attacked by the Erudite, saying that they are corrupt leaders. Tris is the only one
to realize that they are calling for an overthrow of the entire government (Roth 245). She proves to
the city that Erudite has treasonous plans. Without her no one would have been prepared to fight
against Jeanine and start the revolution. In The Hunger Games Katniss is the only person that could

The Influence Of NASA
Have you ever looked up into the night sky and contemplated the many wonders and splendors
that abound our universe? If you have then you might have also noticed that our universe doesn
t only consist of the splendidness that we can see with our eyes alone, but with many other
mysteries that we have yet not solved. In addition, as humans it has always been our nature to be
curious and therefore, it has also been our greatest avidity to explore and discover things that are
foreign to us. For instance, to many people it has become a significant objective to go beyond
the impossible, sometimes in the pursuit to try and gain a greater perception of not only the
world we live in, but also of the things that exist around us. In addition, as people s passion to
learn about space has enlarged, many space groups and administrations have flourished. Thus
many people have began to take on the role to try and go beyond the limits of the planet we live
in, in other words, explore space. However, time has shown that in order to reach such
achievements, great amounts of money are needed. Furthermore, over the past few years the U.S
has been contributing to one of the world s largest air and spacecraft administration, otherwise
known as NASAby funding money to it. In addition, it has been these contributions that have led
to its many discoveries, which have taken part of our lives in one way or another. Therefore, as
NASA s discoveries have extended and taken on different areas, the

Reflective Essay On Greek Culture
My experience attending the Seminar on Greece with Dr. Khosrowshahi was a very interesting, fun
and informational way to gain knowledge of the different cultures and history of other parts of the
world. I do not have an extensive knowledge of Greek history or culture. I enjoyed learning the
different traditions and cultural rituals of the Greek culture. I learned a lot about the historyof
Greece and how much the history influences many other cultures throughout the world. The most
interesting fact and important impression I took away from the seminar is my Mother s name is
Diane , neither my mother or myself knew the Greek history behind her name. I enjoyed how Dr. K
used different ways to involve the students at the seminar to become engaged in learning and
experiencing Greek culture. I found the drum performance quite exciting and interesting. Also, the
young ladies demonstrating their cultural dance skills were very entertaining. After learning more
about Greek culture, I found it very interesting how much the alphabet and language influences
American English.
The part of the seminar I enjoyed most was Dr. K demonstrating his knowledge of Greek music by
demonstrating the drum. I enjoyed many other aspects of the seminar as well. I enjoyed the visuals,
including the pictures and videos used to provide a visual experience of Greek culture. The Greek
culture artifacts and photos from previous trips to Greece was inspiring and exciting to experience
as well. Also, student interaction was impressive throughout the entire seminar. There is not
anything I disliked about the seminar. The only thing I did not like was having to take off work to
attend. This is not anything involving the seminar or the presentation. Furthermore, I am thankful I
was able to have the opportunity to take off work to attend this continuing education experience.
Prior to this seminar, I was not aware of the extensive history of the Olympic Games. It was
interesting to learn the Olympics originated before Christ. Also, the Olympics truly represent the
uniting of different cultures, religions and races. This is a very inspirational and motivating
experience considering the current division of cultures. When

Death Comes For The Archbishop Analysis
Death Comes for the Archbishop Reflection Paper
During the reading of unit three s Death comes for the Archbishop, God is easily shown through
the reading in book 5, primarily shown through Bishop Latour and Padre Martinez during their
discussion on celibacy. Knowing Padre Martinez is strong willed and harsh minded person, their
conversation on celibacy became somewhat heated, but a learning experience for Bishop Latour.
Bishop Latour was able to understand much more about Padre Martinez by putting himself him
Padre Martinez s shoes during the conversation. He lowered his believes and standards, showing
humility, in a graceful way to see what was trying to be communicated to him. Through this, he
was able to see how Padre Martinez sees God

Suburbia Research Paper

Suburbia: America s Self Made Frontier
Thomas Jefferson, America s third president, dreamed of a nation of small farmers living off the
land and believed large cities to be destructive to the morals, the health, and the liberties of man.
However, as the nation grew into the most powerful in the world, its cities followed suit. They
became the social, economic, and political centers of their respective areas. Cities such as Boston,
New York, and San Francisco became the industrial and marketing strongholds of the country.
However, by the 1950s, the American landscape was transformed yet again with the arrival of the
new frontier, Suburbia. Americans migrated from the dirty, crowded, and... Show more content on

Many historians believe that Suburbia promoted discrimination as southern blacks migrated north
during the Second World War and pushed white families to the suburbs. De facto segregation was
practiced in cities through both violent and nonviolent methods. African Americans that moved into
predominantly Caucasian, suburban neighborhoods faced violence. For example, death threats,
vandalism, and physical assaults were employed to stop the integration of communities. Along with
the encouragement of discrimination, suburban living also endorsed a plain and ordinary
landscape. 47% of people favored laws that would keep builders from building houses that all look
alike (Gallup Poll Document #8). Critics believed

With Friends Like These Dorothy Rowe Summary
Dorothy Rowe explores the nature of how friendships reflect our own natures in her essay With
Friends Like These... Despite powerful concepts such as validation, and jealousy, whirlpool is
the prime piece of diction. The imagery of a deadly whirlpool illustrates the central notion of
how friendships can either relate peacefully to our own sense of selves or shatter our ideas of
who we believe to be our friends. Rowe states, Early in our life our own stream of conscious and
unconscious constructions create, like a real stream, a kind of whirlpool that quickly becomes our
most precious possession, that is, our sense of being a person... Rowe takes a pessimistic approach
to the examination of friendshipby utilizing such a strong metaphor

Cahoki Article Analysis
Speaking of skeletal remains, there is evidence of body modification at Cahokia. Gregory Perino
discovered filed teeth at Cahokia. These findings showed observers that this practice was only
done for a short period of time in the transition from Late Woodland Period to the Mississippian
period. According to Perino, the siginificance of filing teeth cannot be explicitly determined but
majority of them were thought to be ambassadors; but the fact that these filings were also found on
young persons, throw off the conclusively of saying this was due to differentiating in social status
(Perino 1967:541). Public works, as defined in class, would be some kind of monumental or public
architecture that would take the organization of the labor of many... Show more content on

Flannery and Marcus discuss in our textbook about the social renown that comes from
agriculture. It is also the case that for most parts of the world, Rousseau was right: not until
people had begun to raise crops or animals do we see signs of emerging inequality (Flannery and
Marcus 2012:91). This is especially true for Cahokia. In Cahokia, food storage changed in the
Mississippian period. Woods, in his article, points out the fact that there is archeological
evidence for food storage as being a communal event at Cahokia and that Cahokian households
typically lacked a storage place of their own, which gave rise to the need for a large, community
based facility (2004:149). This was not always the case. There was evidence back in the Late
Woodland period, prior to the Mississippian Period that shows there were domestic storage
features in households and little evidence for communal storage. The rise of communal storage
also gives rise to social power of the elites. ... the institutionalization of social ranking, DeBoer
contends that There is no mystery to the absences of subterranean storage in such circumstances.
It is expected (Woods 2004:154). This being said, the change from subterranean food storage to
aboveground food storage changed once Cahokia elites were gaining more and more power and
becoming redistributors. This is an exemplary indication of social inequality. The chiefs and elites
control the food storage and how much gets redistributed and how much goes back in to replace
what was used. The producers and consumers of the food do not get much say in the matter because
it is not their

Madonna and Venus from Two Different Periods Essay
Madonna and Venus From Two Different Periods I have always been intrigued by the many
depictions of Madonna and Venus therefore I chose to compare and contrast Parmigianino s
Madonna of the Long Neck from the mannerist style of the later Renaissance and Titian s Venus of
Urbinofrom Venetian Renaissance. First I will tell you a little bit about the historical background of
both paintings, then I will prove my thesis by talking about exemplifies two artist s style and the
movement it represents, and considering the differences between two artwork in artistic styles,
subject matter, and formal approaches.
First, Madonna of the Long Neck was created at the Mannerist period in 1535 by Parmigianino

When looking at Madonna with the Long Neck, the colors are subdued and dull but his use of
color with the High Renaissance formula the primary colors. In terms of mannerism, elongation was
thought to create a more elegant and graceful look, which may be one of the main reasons why
Mannerist art contained a lot of unnatural looking human figures. In the painting, I see a lot of
elongation being used in different areas as well as oddly proportioned bodies. Madonna herself
has a very extended neck, which holds up her smaller sized head making her look unusual and
abnormal. Below her neck, I see her unnaturally slanted shoulders and her elongated fingers
resting on her chest. Her legs also appear to be very long as they look much bigger than her
narrow upper body. This makes for Madonna being a very colossal and dominant figure.
Furthermore, when comparing Madonna to the women who stand beside her, Madonna is huge.
In Madonna s lap is her baby Christ who also has unnaturally long features. The body of baby
Christ is so long especially his legs. It looks like a much older boy. I think Pontormo wanted the
audience to focus more on the bodies and the drama, rather than the specific details.
In Venus of Urbino, Titian formed a good composition that balances somewhat the delicate static
character of the reclining Venus with a consistent dynamic component. The painting

  • 2. Active Learning Is The Key For Understanding, Not Passive... Active Learning is the Key to Understanding, Not Passive Learning According to Paulo Freire, a Brazilian educator and philosopher, the current education lacks teacher student communication. In his article he reveals that, Instead of communicating, the teacher issues communiques and makes deposits which the students patiently perceive, memorize, and repeat. This is the banking concept of education, in which the scope of action allowed to the students extends only as far as receiving, filing, and storing the deposits. Basically, Freire s argument is that education should involve student teacher knowledge exchange, rather than the teacher being the one teaching all the time. As someone who is an educator, Freire understands that knowledge is a result of active learning rather than passive learning. He likens the current education to a banking system whereby the teacher just deposits information into the students empty heads. Freire complains that this type of education does not give students the understanding they need to connect the material with reality. In fact, he stresses out that students just memorize what is said by the teacher without understanding the concepts. Due to that, he further describes how the concepts taught in class seem to be disconnected from reality since the students cannot relate how education affects their day to day lives. Although I agree with Freire that education should not be like a banking system, I cannot accept his overriding assumption ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Religion Of Buddhism And Buddhism In the world today, there are dozens of religions that have spread all over to many parts of the world to promote their idea of spiritual enlightenment and peace. One of the interesting things that occurs with some of these religions is after it spreads to a new area, how it becomes popular with the people and becomes a part of everyday life. The religion of Buddhismis one of these that had this effect when it began to spread from India where it originated, to many Asian countries especially Chinawhere it would have the biggest impact. In China, Buddhism would take root and would grow to become a popular religion in the country much like the other major religions of China, Confucianismand Taoism, which together with Buddhism would later be known as the Three Teachings . Additionally, at some point Buddhism would began to lose its popularity in India due to Hinduism, which had absorbed some of the features of Buddhism and another famous religion from India Jainism, in order to re emergence as the major religion of India. In China, this would not be the case, as it would continue to grow and remain strong long after it fell out of popularity in India. This study will explore some of the ways of how Buddhism was able to prosper and survive longer in China where in India it was only able to last until Hinduism re remerged as the major religion for India. When Buddhism was first arrived in China during the Han Dynasty (221 207 BC), it did not become popular right away, as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Azacitidine are DNA Methyltransferase Inhibitors Azacytidine or 5 AZC Trade Name : Vidaza Introduction: Azacitidine are DNA Methyltransferase inhibitors. Azacitidine being an analog for cytidine gets integrated into the DNA sequence of the DNMT gene, the gene turns dysfunctional, inhibiting the DNA methyltransferase enzymes which normally methylate DNA. Azacitidine is used primarily for the treatment of myelodysplastic syndromes or MDS a blood disorder which affects the bone marrow leading to a low or ineffective production of blood cells. The cancerous overgrowth of a number of immature cells or blasts and the abnormally developed or dysplastic cells increase, thereby reducing the cell count of normal red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Azacitidine as a chemotherapeutic drug (in low doses) prevents the body from making nucleic acids required for cell growth of the cancerous cells. This stops the growth of cancer cells and leads to cell death. Azacitidine also appears to help restore normal growth and differentiation (cell specialization) in the cells of the bone marrow. This betters the bone marrow production of normal blood cells. Discovery: Azacitidine was first synthesized by Piskala and Sorm in 1964 [Piskala A, Sorm F. (1964). Collect Czech Chem. Commun., 29: 2060 2076]. It was developed as a nucleoside antimetabolite specifically used for the treatment of acute myelogenous leukemia (Cihak, 1974;Sorm et al., 1964). But studies later revealed that this drug inhibited cell mitosis with high ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Abstraction in the United States Through the Twentieth Century Abstraction is the creation of art without representation of objects, in which the artist has total freedom of the art that they are creating. I will be using three paintings from three different time periods in order to show the development and lasting effects of abstraction in the twentieth century. The first work that I will be looking at is Foghorns by Arthur Dove. I will use this piece to show the beginning of abstraction, and how ideas of abstraction were present before the movement began. The second painting that I will be looking at is Jackson Pollock s Lucifer. I will be using this painting as an example of the height of abstraction in the 20th century and will be discussing Pollock s influence on abstraction. The third piece of art I will be looking at is Many Mansion by Kerry James Marshall. I will use this work to show the remnants of Pollock s influence, and the influence of abstraction in general, on art in the later half of the century. For the development of this paper I looked at two of the course readings. The first reading that I used was The Tradition of the New by Harold Rosenberg. I used this article to show how Foghorns by Arthur Dove relates to abstraction, and to show how ideas in creation of this painting can be linked to ideas of abstract art. The second reading that I used for this paper was The Legacy of Jackson Pollock by Alan Kaprow. I used this article to gain information about ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Swatch and the Global Watch Industry 1. How did Timex succeed the Swiss as world volume leader in the 1950s and 1960s? Timex toppled the world dominance of the Swiss by streamlining the watch making process therefore also making the process very scaleable. The Swiss had dominated in an era where very little competition existed. This paved the way for the Swiss and their high cost watch producers to remain dominant as consumers really had no alternative to turn to. Timex introduced watches using a combination of automation, precision tooling, and simpler design then their Swiss rivals. The Timex movements also incorporated new hard alloy bearings rather than expensive jewels used by the Swiss. All this lead to efficient and effective automation of Timex production lines, ... With this formula, the Swiss made a breakthrough into the global watch industry by producing high quality, inexpensive watch in Switzerland. Marketing was also a key area which had to be looked at for Swatch to fully resuscitate the overall Swiss watch industry. To do this for them, Swatch decided that to do it right, marketing should be outsourced to specialists. Franz Sprecher, an independent consultant, helped to transition the image of the Swiss watch from a very expensive, traditional timekeeping instrument to an inexpensive lifestyle symbol and fashion accessory. Swatch followed this lead and also did a good job in producing very trendy watches with very colorful designs. There was a Swatch created for every occasion. This new approach in marketing and manufacturing sealed the deal for Swatch and was an instant hit propelling the Swiss watch industry to the forefront of the watch manufacturing industry. With the success of Swatch and their new alternative approach to marketing and design, media quickly became very interested. The same female actors, directors, producers, writers, etc. are hired repeatedly, mostly those connected to the males at the top of the hierarchical ladder or having had experience and success with the same studio before (John 432 437). Existence of female professionals and hiring of a female for a project does not indicate the overcoming of systemic barriers. The question is not only in the number or percentage of women involved in the production, but about diversity and equal opportunities. Another component of initial hiring practices in filmstudios is correlation with law and associations requirements. Diversity requirement that is standard for the industry usually poses a quota that allows the employer to hire females or maleminorities. By providing a choice of hiring a male of color or a female, this provision allows studios to evade anti discriminationlaws (Paydar 8). Fighting all these exclusions based on sex and discrimination practices is possible mostly by individual court orders through several claims available to women within US laws (Bureau of National Affairs). However, there is a limited number of women in any field of the film industry who would go to court suing multimillion studios that control a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. A Short Note On Maximal Oxygen Consumption ( Vo2max ) Introduction Maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), the highest recorded rate of oxygen consumption during a graded and exhaustive exercise test, is a top indicator of cardio pulmonary endurance in humans and is believed to correlate with overall health (Strijk, Proper, Klaver, Beek, Mechelen, 2010). VO2max of an individual declines with age regardless of exercise status, but exercise may lead to a significantly slower decline in VO2max during the aging process (Katzel, Sorkin, Fleg, 2001) Many factors related to aging such as decrease of maximal heart rate, stroke volume, the gain of body mass, decreased muscle mass, and decreased health status are thought to be the primary contributing factors leading to a decline in VO2max (Grimsmo, Arnesen, Maehlum, 2010). Individuals that have decreased their physical activity levels or developed health problems had a greater decline in VO2max values, over a longitudinal study, than their healthy counterparts (Grimsmo et al., 2010). Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) affects individuals by causing airflow restriction, impairing their exercise capacity (Ortega, Montemayor, Sanchez, Cabello, 1995). A VO2max test has the ability to help identify COPD that may not have been apparent prior to this test and can indicate the severity of the disease (Ortega et al, 1995). One metabolic equivalent of task (MET) is the amount of energy used to sit in a chair for one minute which is equivalent to a VO2max value of 3.5ml/kg/min ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The knowledge that Bud and his sister Mary Sue Parker, the other main character in the film, impart on the people of Pleasantville (especially the young people) seems to connect to the story of the forbidden fruit in the Bible. The first instance of their knowledge from their world making changes in Pleasantville is when Mary Sue takes Skip Martin, her love interest, to a place called Lover s Lane . No one in Pleasantville had ever experienced anything sexual, even the parents of children, before this moment and it has a drastic impact on Skip, and later his basketball teammates when he tells them what happened. This is also the first time something comes into colour in Pleasantville, and Skip is the first person to witness this event due to the revelation that he has gone through. Soon as the news spreads around, other young people start experimenting sexually and sex becomes a common practice at Lover s Lane. Lover s Lane is an allusion to the tree of knowledge in the Bible as it is where the first changes in views of the townspeople take place. The town of Pleasantville is therefore representative of the Garden of Eden where everything is perfect in the eyes of the monochrome townspeople. Later Mary Sue s mother, Betty Parker, is curious as to what actually goes on at Lover s Lane, to which Mary Sue explains. Betty does not seem shocked or disgusted as she has never experienced or known about anything Mary Sue is talking about. She responds by saying, your father would never do anything like that indicating that she has a curiosity to try what Mary Sue describes but she believes there is no way. The Primate Family Tree By Ian Redmond Use of Metaphor in The Primate Family Tree Although some may think of metaphor as ornamental and inapplicable for use in subjects other than English literature, metaphors are necessary for communication in all disciplines. The use of metaphor is crucial in the field of education because one cannot understand completely new ideas without making a connection to previously known information (Oshlag and Petrie). Textbooks readily employ metaphor to convey new information to students. Pages 28 29 of The Primate Family Tree by Ian Redmond illustrates the evolution of primates through a diagram of a tree and describes how the theory of evolution has changed since the nineteenth century. The Primate Family Tree willfully utilizes metaphors regarding abstract complex systems and the Great Chain of Being to explain scientific concepts to an audience that is uneducated in complex zoological and evolutionary processes. Two main metaphor systems categorize many metaphorical expressions: the Great Chain of Being system and the Event Structure system (Kovecses 151). The Great Chain system is based on a vertical scale of complexity, or being, and accounts for how one conceptually analyzes metaphors that compare two things or nouns (Kovecses 151). She does so by describing the prostitutes as not alien and showing fine human qualities. Their habitual formations and mental qualities are like other ordinary humans. This agreement gave Germany the authority to take over a part of Czechoslovakia known as Sudetenland. The two allies hoped that Hitler would be satisfied and leave them out of the war. • 37. A Report On Aedes Albopictus 3.BACKGROUND AND LITERATURE REVIEW 3.1INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT Aedes albopictus is considered to be the most invasive mosquito species in the world (1, 2) and there is an increased potential for its introduction into mainland Australia given the established populations discovered, since 2005, in the Torres Strait, the region that sandwiches between Papua New Guinea (PNG) and northern Australia (3). The aedine mosquito species have been culpably involved in the transmission cycles of pathogens of public health importance (1). Aedes albopictus is known to have both field and laboratory proven vector competence for a number of emerging and re emerging viruses including chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and dengue virus (DENV). CHIKV and DENV are arthropod borne (arboviruses) viruses transmitted by the Aedes genus (4). Dengue is considered the most important arboviral disease in the world affecting 390 million people every year (5, 6), and CHIKV has continued to conquer new territories; charting an unprecedented worldwide expansion (7 11). In Australia, dengue outbreaks occur regularly in northern Queensland where there is Aedes aegypti (12 14). Between November 2008 and May 2009, more than one thousand confirmed autochthonous cases of dengue were recorded in Cairns, north Queensland, and Aedes aegypti, the only competent dengue vector, at the time, was implicated. Additionally, children s vocal foldshave an average fundamental frequency, or vocal fold vibration, of 250 Hz per second. However, the larynxalso has the nonbiological function of acting as a vibratory source for speech. This is a complex system and so produces a lot of variety in speech, particularly between men and women. Therefore, vocal production becomes indicative of how a person is perceived, partially based on societal assumptions. This surgery is done through a neck incision, which makes the Adam s apple look smaller, possibly giving the individual a more preferred look in addition to the pitch change. For Commissure advancement, a center strip of the anterior commissure is cut from the thyroid cartilage. The vocal cords are then detached in the subperichondrial plane, and the cartilage strip is advanced and secured using a metal splint (American, 2003). One of the standard procedures for war is to use weapons such as pistols, shotguns, grenades, and automatic infantry. Considering that the world flourishes in science today, scientists are researching for more efficient ways to handle war, which is were biological warfare comes in. Biological weaponry offers a couple of positives. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Biological warfare presents many problems compared to the positives. First off, biological weapons can potentially live in infected areas for long periods of time. For example, one of the more common diseases used in biological warfare is Anthrax. Anthrax has the capability to transform into spores which protects the bacteria for decades (Hoyle). This offers the chance of spreading the biological agent in the future to other people who were unintended targets. Another example is the incapacitating agent known as the bomblet. When used, the bomblet leaves a remainder of five percent of the agent behind (Eitzen). If the leftover agent is identified, the opponent can research and produce a medical treatment, rendering the agent useless. Another major disadvantage relates to the U.S. The knowledge of the general population is that the U.S. holds no biological weapons (Eitzen). If this is true, another country could easily attack us with biological agents and the U.S. army would not know how to approach such a devastating hit. Although biological warfare is cost effective, this means enemies can get ahold of the agents easier and research more. I believe that if a group of terrorists were to spend a decent amount of time studying the agent and manipulating it, the agent could become super ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If Coca Cola wish to improve their asset turnover ratio, they could improve their sales performance or dispose of surplus or underutilised assets. Inventory turnover measures the company s success in converting inventories into sales. Coca Cola s current inventory turnover has been 62 days in 2010 and 76.2 days in 2011. This is a relatively high number, meaning Coca Cola sell their entire inventories 5.89 and 4.79 times a year. I found the drum performance quite exciting and interesting. Also, the young ladies demonstrating their cultural dance skills were very entertaining. After learning more about Greek culture, I found it very interesting how much the alphabet and language influences American English. I enjoyed the visuals, including the pictures and videos used to provide a visual experience of Greek culture. The Greek culture artifacts and photos from previous trips to Greece was inspiring and exciting to experience as well. Also, student interaction was impressive throughout the entire seminar. This is especially true for Cahokia. In Cahokia, food storage changed in the Mississippian period. Woods, in his article, points out the fact that there is archeological evidence for food storage as being a communal event at Cahokia and that Cahokian households typically lacked a storage place of their own, which gave rise to the need for a large, community based facility (2004:149). In terms of mannerism, elongation was thought to create a more elegant and graceful look, which may be one of the main reasons why Mannerist art contained a lot of unnatural looking human figures. In the painting, I see a lot of elongation being used in different areas as well as oddly proportioned bodies. Madonna herself has a very extended neck, which holds up her smaller sized head making her look unusual and abnormal. Below her neck, I see her unnaturally slanted shoulders and her elongated fingers resting on her chest. Her legs also appear to be very long as they look much bigger than her narrow upper body. This makes for Madonna being a very colossal and dominant figure. Furthermore, when comparing Madonna to the women who stand beside her, Madonna is huge. In Madonna s lap is her baby Christ who also has unnaturally long features. The body of baby Christ is so long especially his legs. It looks like a much older boy. I think Pontormo wanted the audience to focus more on the bodies and the drama, rather than the specific details.
