The Role Of A Vice President
I claim that the role of Vice President of the United States of America is not an essential role in our
government. The Vice President was originally picked based on who had the second most votes. The
person who had the most votes would become the President. It was quickly realized that this process
would no longer. It was most evident after the crisis of 1801, when there was multiple revotes due to
constant ties in the votes. Especially in the early years Vice President was looked at as one of the most
useless positions ever invented. Vice President John N. Garner even said that is wasn t even worth a
pitcher of warm spit. That fact that it is men who have held this position that are ridiculing it really
shows how the position is looked at.

Donaldson s Beowulf Essay
Donaldson s Beowulf
Fate often saves an undoomed man when his courage is good
Beowulf (Donaldson, 12)
The passage that I analyzed spans the action when Beowulf returns to the halls of Heorot after a harsh
battle with Grendel s mother. He returns to king Hrothgar in the great hall of Heorot to say that he has
successfully completed his boast and killed Grendel s mother. Beowulf states that it has been a very
difficult underwater battle and that he has barely escaped with his life, The fight would have been
ended straightway if God had not guarded me (Donaldson, 29). Beowulf mentions this due to the fact
that the sword given to him by Unferth, called Hrunting, was powerless against Grendel s Mother.
Hrunting is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the festivities celebrating Beowulf s victory the King predicts that Beowulf will become the
protector of the Geats until old age takes him and that he will be one of their greatest kings.
Christian and Pagan Elements
(p 28 31)
GRAPH The many references to God in the pages (28 31) of Beowulf reflect Christian beliefs as
opposed to pagan ones. In pagan worship, nature takes the place of God along with the belief that
inanimate objects contain spirits. The Geats would refer to Grendel and his mother as God s enemy
and descendants of Cain. Cain is a biblical reference to the story of Cain and Abel. In this story, Cain
slays his brother Abel and consequently, is banished by God for all of eternity. Because of his role as
the first murderer, Cain is thought to be the father of all monsters.
Another example of Christianity which is evident in Beowulf is the fact that the eye for an eye belief
is practiced. During the second raid of Heorot by Grendel s mother, a very close friend of King
Hrothgar and great warrior named Aeschere is murdered. The monster, not abiding by the laws of the
time, is subject to the eye for an eye belief and then has to be murdered

The Handmaid s Tale By Atwood
The Handmaid s Tale How does the reading contribute to your emerging understanding of the novel?
One of the main themes is postmodernist of absolute truth... The Handmaid s Tale by Atwood makes
readers to question the authenticity of constructing universal truth .....is a postmodern text as it
emphasises the form rather than the content. It demonstrates a belief that language does not simply
mirror the world, but aids us in reconstruction. Postmodernism is sceptical about the universal truth as
well as the language that claims to be authoritative and objective. The stylistic technique of a

She wants to look up to the original words but she knows that the bible is kept locked up... [they]can
be read to from it, by him, [they] cannot read . Offred s statement reveals the juxtaposition demeanour
Gilead has, for the state forcing them to submit to their so called one true religion , but restricting
access to knowledge by banning them from reading and writing. The regime can interpret it however
they please without citizens challenging, preventing the public to identify made up statements that are
claimed to be taken from the Bible. In addition, Gilead also uses clothing to represent hierarchy, with
dress codes that demonstrates women s lack of individuality and autonomy, as if they have become
interchangeable, like matching outfits on a rack, this is revealed as Offred describes her daily clothes
with red shoes... everything except the wings around [her] face is red: the colour of blood, which
defines [them] . The symbolism of red represents sins; namely adultery, conveying the notion of
repressive nature and the sexual acts they are forced to perform with their commanders, the clothing
also blinds them to the outside world and keep them hidden from it, portraying the limits of freedom
they have. Various interpretation affects the construction of truth; reader must be aware construction

use of the Bible justify its rule the same way readers interpret

Ethics And Research. In 1932 The American Government...
Ethics and Research
In 1932 the American Government conducted a study named the Tuskegee Syphilis study, this project
was administered by the US Health in Macon County, Alabama. The Government promises 600 plus
African American citizens access to free medication and access to proper health care. This study
subjects was all tested positive for Syphilis when they enrolled for the study. However, these subjects
were denied medicine and were experimented on to help the Government to better understand the
Syphilis virus. The men in this study weren t aware of the research design and possible danger to them
and their families. (Carol Heintzelman 2003 p.1) This study went on for the next forty years.

(Earl Babbie 2008 p 69). These risks include any medical or psychology harm to the subjects. The
Tuskegee Syphilis Study didn t tell their subjects any particulars of the research and withheld
information from them. This study also brought up the concerns of the possibility that a person might
feel pressured to agree or might not understand what they agreeing to. (Heintzelman 2003 p.1). The
subjects agreed to free medication, which proposes the question that they might not of understood
what that entails.
Another issue with this is that the Government Doctors also failed to obtain informed consent from the
subjects; they disregarded the human rights of the subjects and committed medical misconduct. These
Doctors failed to provide medication, Penicillin, which was deemed safe by this study, to the subjects.
According to Ogungbure, although the black participants in the Tuskegee Study had no formal school
education, the medical experts were not morally justified to deprive them of their right to know about
the dangerous procedures they would be subjected to, including the painful spinal tap, unimaginable
psychological stress, and constant body piercing. (Ogungbure 2011 p 84)
Withholding Treatment for research purposes
The Second ethical principle ignored by the research was withholding treatment for research purposes.

How Did The Constitution Unite Australia
Since the time of the first fleet until now, Australian law has been divided between two types of
Australians, the settlers and the indigenous. Since the time of the first fleet, the settlers put into place
English law to rule the land known as Australia and make laws on the rights of the people, the
indigenous and the land. Since then, Australian law has come a long way in the development of a
fairer constitution and enacting laws for the indigenous to close the gap between them and the settlers.
There has been many landmark rulings in the fight for equality for the indigenous community,
including the case of Mabo and the case of Wik, all of which will be discussed further on. The
Australian Constitution was expected to unite Australia under the first and ... Show more content on

The Australian Constitution likewise explicitly victimised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
groups. The Australian Constitution did not and still does not make satisfactory procurement for
Australia s first peoples. In the fight for recognition, the Indigenous Australians have managed to win
landmark cases, as mentioned above, to place themselves in the constitution and close the gap.
In the case of Mabo v Queensland 1992, it was a case on whether the Meriam people had customary
and traditional rights in the land the Murray Islands, and whether or not the Australian law protected
those rights.
It was held by the High Court of Australia that the Meriam people were entitled to the possession, use
and occupation and enjoyment of the land of the Murray Islands. Through this landmark case, the
recognition of the Indigenous people was finally acknowledged, removing the original doctrine that
Australia was terra nullius at the time of the first

Consumerism In The United States
1. Some people argue that it is acceptable for people in the United States to consume at high levels
because their consumerism keeps the world economy going. What are the weaknesses in this idea?
Although America s consumerism may seem to help the economy of less fortunate countries, this
rampant depletion has become financially and ecologically unsustainable. Globally, 86% of
consumption expenditures comes from the 20% of the world s people in first world countries, while
the poorest 20% account for only a meager 14%. It seems that consumption has become a function of
our culture. Only by generating and selling goods does capitalism currently work; and the more
produced and purchased the more we have progress and prosperity. Additionally, ... Show more

Essay on Propaganda
Distorted Mirror of Reality
All propaganda must be popular and its intellectual level must be adjusted to the most limited
intelligence among those it is addressed to, consequently, the greater the mass it is intended to reach,
the lower its purely intellectual level will have to be.
~Adolf Hitler Mein Kampf Psychology of Propaganda
Fascism is a form of counter revolutionary politics that first arose in the early part of the twentieth
century in Europe. It was a response to the rapid social upheaval, the devastation of World War I, and
unstable economy. Fascism is a philosophy or a system of government that advocates or exercises a
dictatorship of the extreme right, typically through the merging of state and business leadership, ...

On them depends the existence of this whole culture; if they perish, the beauty of this earth will sink
into the grave with them (288). Hitler was attempting to convey to the German people that their race
and culture was superior to all others and that Aryans were invincible. Hitler wanted to create a sense
of pride, unity and stability among the people because stability was not a very strong factor among the
masses who felt they had nothing to lose. Therefore, Hitler called his political cause quot;the
movement quot;.
Movement was, indeed, one of the mythic messages, movement away from the state of stagnation of
the Weimar Republic, as the Nazis emphasized it repeatedly to persuade the masses, away from the
shameful dictate of the Versailles peace treaty, away from true blood sucking parasites, Jews, (304)
and forward towards the building of a quot;New Pure Germany quot; who would be a power to reckon
with throughout Europe and the World at large.
Although Hitler lacked his own characteristics of being a true Aryan (blond haired and blue eyed
individual), he represented all of Germany as an ultimate ruler eliminating all other potential
authorities that could possibly compete with him, just as a self evident mythology cannot tolerate
other powers, which might challenge and lead to the dissolution of the mythic system.
In his book Mein Kampf Hitler stated, The art of propaganda lies in understanding the emotional ideas

What Is Prejudice In America
Prejudice in America? I see it as more than just in America, it is more like a world wide problem. It
affects from homeless people to the rich in our society. In America, when we think of prejudice we
often think of it in terms of Black and White. However, prejudice is much more than that. It is a term
that can encompass many things like racism, sexism, homophobias, anti immigrant, religious
persecution, etc. What is prejudice? Prejudice can mean many things but according to a dictionary it
means:
preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience . In America this is still a
problem, many people are still biased, they still judge people based on their race, sex, religion, and
color. You would assume prejudicial thoughts

President Roosevelt Hypertension
Background
As late as about seven decades ago, elevated blood pressure was considered by many expert
physicians to be necessary for the adequate perfusion of vital organs. It was deemed as an
unavoidable, hence essential, component of the aging process leading to the coining of the term
essential hypertension . High blood pressure (BP) was considered as probable natural and necessary
compensatory phenomenon that should be left alone even if there were effective treatments (Hay,
1931; White, 1937). This notion was further strengthened by the observed elevated misery and
premature death recorded for the patients that were treated for hypertension with the few drugs that
were available at the time compared to those that were left untreated (Goldring, ... Show more content

For instance, the onetime US President, Franklin D. Roosevelt was given a clean bill of health by his
physician even when his BP was recorded as approximately 220/120. A few years later while at Yalta,
Winston Churchill s personal physician noted in his diary that President Roosevelt appeared to be
have had signs of hardening of the arteries disease and had a few months to live. Subsequent events
demonstrated the truth of his diagnosis. President Roosevelt ultimately had a fatal hemorrhagic stroke
2 months later, and his death brought hypertension s potential as a deadly malady to the lime light
(Mahmood, Levy, Vasan, Wang, 2014). Three years after Roosevelt s death, the pivotal National Heart
Act was signed into law by President Truman. The Act created the path for the study of heart diseases
and resulted in several studies including the Framingham Heart Study. The Framingham studies
consistently showed that hypertension, such as hyperlipidemia, was associated with many
cardiovascular morbidities such as stroke, heart failure, and heart attacks leading to premature deaths
and the risk was clearly higher with higher blood pressure (systolic and diastolic). Even before the
Framingham studies, many insurance companies had already begun measuring BP for policyholders
physical examinations. Furthermore, several studies done by the Actuarial Society of America pointed
toward the higher morbidity and mortality associated with higher BP (Kannel, Wolf, Veter,

To Curate my artifact the first thing I did was focus on the image of the Tim Hortons cup and the

showing the brown and plain aesthetic that Tim Hortons has. Also, I wanted to feature taste which is
extremely hard to represent in a digital format. For that part of my exhibit I got some quotes on what

Firstly, as far as image goes I cannot literally produce a physical representation of a TIm Hortons cup.
The best I could do is pictures of what it looked like at the time. Secondly, while I can show images of
the inside a Tim Hortons I can not show the atmosphere of a Tim Hortons. For instance, how busy the
morning rush is with a line of people trying to get coffee. Or how you see a group of retired people
having a daily discussion at lunch time over coffee. There s only so much that can be done on the
medium of digital curation. Consequently, there are also some key issues when trying to curate the
taste of something online. Because you can say what something taste like and be very descriptive.
Ultimately, you can t truly appreciate what something tastes like until you have actually tasted it.
Lastly, while I can present in words the cultural impact that Tim Hortons and the double double has it
can t be fully represented unless you have seen it. For example, it s hard to picture how much
influence Tim Hortons has had unless you see people with Tim s cups everyday at your university or
at your place of work. By in large I feel like a did an admirable job of curating my artifact in a deep
way that can hopefully give those that don t know about Tim Hortons at least a glimpse into how they

Rumour and Gossip in the Workplace

devoted to a person who is not present in the discussion (Wielers, 1998 amp; sitzman, 2006). Rumour

Reading And Writing On My Life
If I said that reading was important to me right now, I would definitely be lying. I can t sit down for
extended periods of time and enjoy a good book like I used to. When I was in elementary school, and
even when I was going into high school, I was never seen without a book. When I was younger I
could finish a new book every single week. But it was very easy for me to fall out of love with reading
as I was being introduced to new technologies. It started with a Nintendo Wii. Sometimes I find it
difficult to admit that I even owned one, but the best way to get over embarrassment is to talk about it
right? Never the less, it was the beginning of the end of my love for reading. My earliest recollections
about reading and writing were very enjoyable for me. Reading had a huge impact on my life. In a
way, I guess you could even say that some of these experiences made me as literate and
knowledgeable as I am today. It was the first time in my life that I can truly remember feeling
genuinely good about myself. A while after I had gotten a Nintendo Wii, I got my first cell phone. It
was a Nokia. Obviously it was nothing special, but at the time it was extremely useful and I loved
having it around. I then moved on to own an HTC and now an IPhone. And not long after I got my
IPhone, I bought a Playstation 4, an Xbox 360, and a Playstation 2. I honestly believe that technology
was the main reason I stopped reading. Now that I have been out of the habit of reading for nearly 6

Assignment On Social Identity Theory Essay
TATA INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES MUMBAI GROUP WORK ASSIGNMENT ON
SOCIAL IDENTITY THEORY Submitted to: Professor Vijay Raman Enrollment No.: M2015CF026
SOCIAL IDENTITY THEORY The Social Identity Theory was developed by Tajfel and Turner in
1979. The theory was originally developed to understand the psychological basis of intergroup
discrimination. Tajfel in 1971 attempted to identify the minimal conditions that would lead members
of one group to discriminate in favour of the in group to which they belonged and against another out
group. In simple words Social identity is a person s sense of who they are based on their group
membership. Later in 1979 Tajfel proposed that the groups (e.g. social class, family, company etc.)
which people belonged to were an important source of pride and self esteem. Groups give us a sense
of social identity: a sense of belonging to the social world. In order to increase our self image we
enhance the status of the group to which we belong. For example, TISS is a top ranked university in
India. We can also increase our self image by discriminating and holding prejudice views against the
out group (the group we don t belong to). For example, the other slightly lower ranked institutes.
Therefore we have divided students into them and us based through a process of social categorization.
This is known as in group (us) and out group (them). Social identity theory states that the in group will
discriminate against the out group to

Examples Of Outsiders In The Outsiders
What does it take to not be an outsider and to fit in with everybody else? Ponyboy Curtis in S.E.
Hinton s The Outsiders tries to explain that he and his friends, the Greasers, are more than just thugs.
They have low external expectations which also leads to low internal expectations. His friends have
all grown up in poor conditions. His best friend, Johnny, is constantly beat at home and is only himself
when he is with the gang. The Greasers are rivals with the Socs, a rich gang made of rich kids.
Ponyboy thought that the Socs had it made, but after he meets Cherry he finds out that they also have
external and internal expectations that make their lives not so made. Ponyboy and Cherry are outsiders
because they see the world differently than the groups that they are in and have a window to escape
stereotype threat and into society where they will be known as an individual, while Dally and Bob
have decided that they are what their group is and they won t have that window.
Ponyboy Curtis faces stereotype threat because of the actions of the group that he is in. They ll know
we re hoods the minute they see us, I thought (Hinton 58). This quote shows that the Greasers face
stereotype threat because people are scared just at the sight of Johnny and Ponyboy. Stereotype threat
has people thinking that Johnny and Ponyboy are dangerous just because of the way they look and the
way they dress. It drives my brother Darry nuts when I do stuff like that, cause I m supposed to be

Negotiation and Communicative Competence
Negotiation and Communicative Competence Summary of Findings: Personal Bargaining Inventory
In summarizing and discussing the results of the Personal Bargaining Inventory I took, I have chosen
six (6) statements that I feel strongly about, each from Sections I and II. These statements will be the
points of discussion for this summary section. Section I is a self rating inventory of statements
describing an individual s negotiation style and attitude towards negotiation. In this section, I felt most
strongly about statements 8, 10, 16, 17, 18 and 22. Statements 8 and 10 reflect my personality as an
individual and potential negotiator, and I strongly felt and believed that (i) I am an impatient person,
therefore I do not like slow moving arguments, and (ii) I have a strong sense of humor, which, in a
negotiation process, could help relieve tension or stress and could help smoothen the
negotiation/bargaining process. Statements 16 and 22 talks about power and competition, respectively.
Personally, I am not the kind of person who seeks power deliberately. I like power but I do not mind
sharing it with another person. Since I know myself to be a team player and generally, a collaborating
type of person, I find comfort in sharing power and having another person to support me in assuming
the responsibilities that come with the power entrusted to me. Given my kind of personality in terms
of power, it is not surprising, then, that while I enjoy a good competition, I like

Symbols In The Film Batman And Bill
The film I chose was Batman and Bill, a documentary about the man that never got the credit he

You can see Kane s name in every book or movie involving Batman but not everyone actually knew
who created the Dark Knight we all know and love. Until a devoted fan and author wouldn t stop until

Regarding obtaining Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as clients in Golf terms This is a gimme However
SIMP could exist very happily with out them.
The short answer: I have spent 2 years and hundreds of thousands of dollars vetting and coming up
with a Marketing plan for SIMP. We have refined SIMP to a the point Fannie and Freddie will look at
SiMP as nothing more than a mortgage amortization model, That will be all there is to SIMP in their
eyes. As such QM rule pertaining to amortization models are: NO negative mortgages and a benefit to

The Treasure Of Lemon Brown
Every man got a treasure. While walking home in the dark streets of Harlem, Greg Ridley ran into a
downpour. Greg stopped by an abandoned building to elude the rain. He meets an old Blues singer,
Sweet Lemon Brown. Brown shows the young man how a little care goes a long way. In the short
story The Treasure of Lemon Brown, Walter Dean Myers presents the theme of valuing the little
things in life. To begin with, Greg realizes the importance of his father s lectures. First of all, Mr.
Ridley expresses the significance of his son s grades, wishing he had half the chances Greg has at his
age. Greg soon cares about his efforts in school because he wants to stay on the school s basketball
team, and not squander his opportunity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ridley s lectures, Lemon Brown gets the most out of life despite living in rags. When Mr. Brown
compares Greg to his deceased son, he points out the small details about his kid. For example, Brown
recalls that his son had big eyes like Greg, and told Greg that he could Look into them moon eyes and
see anything you want (4). Appreciating the unique eyes goes to show that Sweet Lemon Brown
cherishes the critical details during his time on Earth. Additionally, the Blues singer values seniority
when he defends his treasure from intruders. For instance, after hurling his body down the flight of
stairs, Brown teaches Greg that When you get as old as me...you say... Howdy Mr. Pain, sees you back
again. Then when Mr. Pain see he can t worry you none, he go on mess with somebody else (6).
Lemon Brown shows Greg that old age comes with life, and experience helps put fright and pain in
the back of your mind and allows you to work through it. Also, when the old man reveals his treasure
to Greg, he shows the kid that knowing someone cares is the greatest feeling you can get. Lemon
shows all his clippings and beat up harmonica to Greg, explaining how his kid, [Jesse], carrying it
around with him like that told me it meant something to him... (7). After hearing that his son treated
his gift like diamonds, Lemon Brown clung to the traces of his past like a baby to his

The Sun Also Rises By Ernest Hemingway
The Sun Also Rises
Ernest Hemingway
Introduction
Ernest Hemingway s The Sun Also Rises is a classic work of American prose, and is essential to
understanding the social climate of the 1920 s, and the Lost Generation . Hemingway s motley cast of
star crossed lovers, rabble rousers, expatriates, gamblers, and burgeoning alcoholics reflect the
excitement, loneliness, and disillusionment experienced by Hemingway and his contemporaries. In
addition, the post war angst of young people of the time is illustrated throughout all of the characters,
affecting their lives and developing them as people. Because of this, The Sun Also Rises is now
considered one of the best novels to come out of the era, as well as one of the most important
American works of all time.
Summary The Sun Also Rises begins in 1920 s Paris, with Jake Barnes describing his friend, Rob
Cohn. He likes Cohn but criticizes him, saying he wasted his money, and is boring and plain. Cohn is
writing his novel while in Paris, but once he finishes, he travels back to the United States to find a
publisher for his book, which he does, and also finds social success in New York, something he felt he
was lacking in Paris. Upon his return, He and Barnes travel to a nightclub in the city, and Barnes sees
his friend, Brett Ashley, a beautiful, intelligent and modern woman whom both Jake and Cohn have
feelings for. Jake kisses her that night, but although she loves Jake, she tells him she isn t willing to be
with him, and it

The Importance Of Gender Socialization
The hard sciences (science, technology, engineering, and math) are important to the advancements of a
country because they encourage the development of new and creative progress that can keep their
country sharp, and a force to be reckoned with, which gives them power. Although STEM fields are
crucial for countries to get ahead, there is a societal belief in America, that women are less capable
and less qualified then men in these fields. It appears that this societal belief has led to a gender gap in
STEM courses and careers between men and women. The lack of women in these fields could be
hindering our countries advancements.
Sociologists have studied this topic extensively and most theorist focus on gender socialization to
explain this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The two main common goals that researchers focus on under the Role Congruity Theory are family
related goals and that women tend to prefer occupations that help others (Barth 2015: 503). As for
agentic goals, prestige and financial success are valued more by men than women (Barth 2015: 503).
Researchers tend to believe that this very well could account for the gender gap in STEM fields.
Embeddedness Theory explains three different factors, Fit, Link, and Sacrifice, to analyze why men
and women whoa are in STEM majors remain in STEM fields. Fit is the extent to which an individual
perceives that his or her abilities match requirements of the job, organization, or occupation and the
extent to which associated rewards are viewed as desirable (Morganson 2015: 350). The factor Links
refers to Links refers to the extent to which an individual has ties to other people and activities in the
job, organization, or occupation (Morganson 2015: 350). Lastly sacrifice is the extent to which losses,
including sunk costs, would be incurred by leaving one s job, organization, or occupation (Morganson
2015: 530)
For the study done on the Role Congruity Theory they used undergraduates from a large, public,
Southeastern United States university. All participants were recruited from an entre level STEM
course. Of the 950 students 60% participated in the

Starbucks Performance Gap
Gap 2 Design amp; Standard Gap
Starbucks has a clear standardized process, however, quite a number of customers indicated in the
survey that they have a concern about the standard of Starbucks service. Starbucks has to improve on
the efficiency of service especially on its speed of service delivery. There are two main problems
identified to be the cause of the delay in delivery. The first one is duplication of the call and mark
process. Call is the procedure of calling out loud by the staff at the counter after receiving an order.
This process has three main purposes, to create a happy atmosphere in the store, to check the order s
accuracy as customers may correct the cashier if he/she heard a wrong call , and to make the ... Show

Gap 3 Performance Gap
The performance gap is discrepancy between development of customer driven service standards and
actual service performance by Starbuck employees. Firstly, the Human Resources strategy allows
employee empowerment. For example, many in store decisions such as hiring and replenishment of
stock, are to be decided by store managers and supervisors. The office does not intervene with these
operational decisions. However, some guidelines are given, for instance when recruiting, it is
suggested that the following five qualities should be possessed by the potential employees: Leadership
skills, relationship building techniques, sustaining self development, the mindset of Customer First
and the person should be a goal achiever. It is surprising that sociable and outgoing traits are not a
criterion for recruitment, which was a contradiction with Starbucks marketing strategy staffs are nice
and caring, they talk to you like family and friends. Also, sociable staff can help build relationship
with their customers, which echoes with Starbucks positioning relationship marketing. Therefore, in

disorder (BPD) (Wick, Konrad, Mangold, 1999). As Susanna Kayson meets 5 of the 9 Diagnostic and
Statistical Manual 5 criteria, Susanna can be diagnosed with BPD.
According to criteria 1, Susanna often restrains from stating her true feelings about a situation or a
person to maintain relationships. Lisa, a resident of the psychiatric ward, would tease or humiliate
Daisy, eventually leading her to commit suicide. Susanna knew that Lisa s actions were inappropriate
but she did not stand up for Daisy. (Barlow, Durand, Stewart, Lalumiere, 2015). Criteria 2 is shown
when Susanna s boyfriend Toby comes to visit, a staff member catches them in the middle of a sexual
act and they decide to escape to the grounds. Toby states he wants to be with her, and she says that she
had no desire to be with him. An example of criteria 5, Susanna tries to commit suicide by consuming
a bottle of aspirin with a bottle of vodka, and later also states that she understands what it feels like to
not want to be alive. An example of criteria 6 is when the wife of a man who Susanna had an affair
with confronts her, she begins to laugh. Lastly, Susanna s inability to understand her disorder causes
her to have bouts of intense anger, which satisfies criteria 8 (Barlow et al., 2015).

Freudian Psychology In William Golding s Lord Of The Flies
William Golding s novel, Lord of the Flies, focuses on a deserted island housing a small group of
boys. Sigmund Freud, an Austrian Neurologist, developed psychoanalysis and coined many terms and
ideas about the mind. Freudian psychology can be used to further understand Golding s characters,
Jack, Ralph, and Piggy. Jack, consumed by his impulsive urge to hunt, acts as Freud s id. Ralph
demonstrates the term ego as he logically attempts to resolve problems. Piggy, concerned with
morality and the words of his aunt, behaves as the superego. Jack, representing the Freudian term id,
acts impulsively to satisfy his basic needs with obsessive hunting. Once on the island, Jack focuses on
hunting and finding food to eat and keep himself alive. Like the id, Jack longs to fulfill his basic,
instinctual needs and receive short term satisfaction, rather than long term fulfillment. The freudian
term id is the part of the mind which deals with innate impulses and primary processes without
consideration. Instead of worrying himself with tasks that require thinking ahead, like making shelters
or fire, Jack s only concern is hunting. After the idea of being rescued is brought to his attention, Jack
had to think... before he could remember what rescue was. Rescue? Yes, of course! All the same, I d
like to catch a pig first... We want meat (Golding 62). Jack seems to have lost all trace of complex
thought, as he struggles with the idea of rescue. He instead relies on his instinctive urge of

Biography Of Ludwig Van Beethoven s Symphonies
Ludwig van Beethoven s nine symphonies are indispensable pieces of music and contributed to him
being referred to as one of the most famous musicians in all of musical history. His symphonies are
still played today and are recognized around the world. He is known as a symphonic master due to his
nine symphonies. Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer during the transitional period
between the Classical and Romantic eras. Beethoven s symphonies were greatly influenced by Haydn
and Mozart in the beginning, but they showed remarkable signs of his individuality and eventually
transformed into his own style. His life is categorized into three periods; early period, heroic period,
and later period, in which his music had distinct characteristics in each of the time periods. His
symphonies were first composed in a very classical style that stemmed from his mentors, to later
develop into a more romantic style with his own personal touch to finally compose the music that he
wanted, without thinking about the music he thought he was supposed to compose. The early period
of Beethoven s life lasted approximately six years, from 1794 to 1800. This period began directly after
Beethoven met the famous composer Franz Joseph Hayden and moved to Vienna to study with him for
two years. Although the lessons with Hayden were not successful due to a personality conflict, Haydn
greatly influenced Beethoven s early period. This period of his life encompassed smaller musical

As the last of the log cabin Presidents, James A. Garfield attacked political corruption and won back
for the Presidency a measure of respect it had lost during the Reconstruction period. He was born in

Dungeon And Dragons, Rock N Roll, And Video Games
Dungeon and Dragons, Rock N Roll, and video games, these are three separate activities that when
looked at from afar do not seem to have anything to do with each other. However, they in fact do have
something fairly big in common. They each have been blamed with being either bad for you or a
negative influence. Whether it be Dungeon and Dragons being satanic and making people lose touch
with reality, Rock N Roll s cause of juvenile delinquency, or video games leading to violent and
antisocial behavior. Now we know that at least two of those were far fetched, those being Rock N Roll

end up making you a more violent person? Antisocial? Are you suddenly going to commit a mass

Perhaps it is the opposite are you going to become more social? Do you develop thinking skills, and
better social skills even when interacting with people you have not met in person? Could it be both, or
at least partially both? Well to put it simply it is partially both, now video games will not suddenly

may know video games are a popular pastime in our current generation, and alongside that popularity
comes controversy, due to the possible negative behavioral and health side effects. However, video

generally higher than 10%. The proliferation of packaging products and poor product education has
caused confusion among end users. US consumers have traditionally viewed packaging supplies as a
cost saving resource. Consequently, packaging engineers are accorded high status and influence
roughly 40% of material purchase decisions. The US market is experiencing strong growth, driven in
part by the growth of the coated and uncoated bubbles segment. However, AirCap s market share
remains stagnant (Appendix A). It is apparent that a growing segment of end users are willing to forgo
product quality for a lower price. European firms, in particular, are price conscious and less
technically oriented; many firms view packaging supplies as expendable commodities. This has
enabled manufacturers of technically inferior, inexpensive uncoated bubble to co opt AirCap
customers with increasing success (Appendix B). 2.2 Competitive Analysis—there are many minor
ones .GAFCEL in NY Sealed Air faces both direct and indirect competition in the flexible wrap
market. Astro Packaging is the only other producer of coated bubbles in the US; it also serves the low
end of the market with uncoated bubbles. GAFCEL recently began manufacturing uncoated bubbles in
the eastern US, and has gained access to several AirCap distributors. In Europe, Sansetsu

Humor In Stand Up Comedy
A Discourse Analysis of Maz Jobrani s Stand up Comedy
1. Introduction
1.1 Background
This is a study of humor in stand up comedy, focusing on analyzing a script using the Cooperative
Principle and Flouting the Maxims by Grice (1975). Humor is used in our daily life to address social,
cultural or political issues in an entertaining manner. Repeatedly, people express their opinion and
ideas with short, funny, exaggerating, dramatic and sarcastic ways to achieve certain effects, thereby
they could feel humorous. Also, humor is practical because without even realizing it, the audience will
change their view on matters they were once deeply convinced with. In this article, I will shed light on
the different functions of humor. I will study and analyze the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It generally involves two main aspects: definition and pragmatics. In this article, I will only deal with
pragmatics. Hancher (1980) explains that humor comes out by violating speech act in appropriate
condition or associated conversational theory of implicature. Raskin (1985) differentiates humor
dialogs from daily normal conversation and proposes the theory of humor s cooperative principle in
which listeners do not take the speaker s words at face value. The speaker is not expected to tell the
truth or to give related information. Attardo (1993) explains the substance of humor and shows the
results behind violating Grice s cooperative principle. Many studies and researches attempt to
illustrate the analysis of humor form the pragmatics point of view. However, only few works explore
humor with discourse analysis. In this article I will apply the pragmatic theory using the cooperative
principle by Grice (1975) and emphasizing on the four maxims merged with discourse analysis to
reveal the result of humor in English in the light of flouting or non observance of Grice s cooperative

Explaining And Discussing Dante s Vision Of Hell
Explaining and Discussing Dante s Vision of Hell in The Inferno Dante s explanation of Hell has
fascinated many individuals by the way it is explained, and more than likely made many use their
mind and overthink it. When readers confront The Inferno, they might be surprised or blown minded
by the way Dante explains what he went through. Many people after reading this might have changed
their way of thinking of Hell because of Dante s lecture, or maybe some still thought the same. Not
everyone thinks that there is a heaven nor a hell, everyone has different believes depending on their
culture and most importantly their religion. Religion is what makes people decide what they believe in
and what not to believe in. When Dante passes through the gates of Hell he knew right away it was
trouble without a doubt, he explains that there is different levels in Hell depending on what that
individual might have done on earth. Virgil is the one who leads Dante into the Gates of Hell, as soon
as Dante enters he then hears countless cries from the many souls that lived on earth and lived their
lives without being aware of their moral choices. Virgil leads Dante to Acheron, which was a river,
and it marks the border of Hell according to the book. Across it there will be many dead souls waiting
to be crossed. Charon was an old man who recognizes Dante and tells him to stay away from the dead
in Hell but then troubles them no longer. Unexpectedly fire and wind rises up from the

Theme Of Hope In The Shawshank Redemption
Hope is the intrinsic aspiration of attaining one s wants and needs, and the stringent factor that
determines, not who someone is but how their character is sculpted, and is hence an attribute of all
humanbeings that is essential for the development of traits such as perseverance and resilliance,
whereas the absense of hope can result in failure, fear, despair and even one s demise. Fear can hold
you prisoner. Hope can set you free , but concurruently, Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a
man insane. Frank Darabont s The Shawshank Redemption (1994) perfectly exhibits this perspective
on the human condition, through the directorial choices of; the portrayal of characters and
characterisation, film techniques and technical elements, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ellis Boyd Red Redding fears hope throughout Darabont s film because of it s proposed capability to
destroy him, represented through his beliefs that there is no place for hope in Shawshank. Moreover,
underlying themes such as institutionalisation corroborate this speculation, as a secondary character
Brooks Hatlen lives in a state of despair following his release from Shawshank State after 50 years.
He has such an outstanding lack of hope, that results in his dependance on Shawshank to the point
where he chooses to end his life rather than live in the free world. In Unbroken Jolie characterises and
portrays the character of Francis Mac McNamara as the result of the abandonment of hope. Mac
shows signs of despair and fear throughout his stranding in the Pacific Ocean with Louis, becoming
far more physically emaciated, depressed and weak consequently dying long before Louis. The writer
of the book Jolie s Unbroken is based off, Laura Hillenbrand explicitly states men are not defined by
themselves, but by their captors and the circumstances in which they are forced to live , conditions
that most men will have lost their minds in. Within the film characers such as Warden Norton of
Shawshank State and Mutsuhiro Watanabe of the Omori prison camp personify the oppression of hope

The Freedom Of Speech Vs Free Speech
Free speech with restrictions As a young child, we have all learned about our God given rights. We
were taught to memorize our amendments and to know the meaning behind them. It is something we
have been taught to not let anyone get in the way of. But lately in the news and media there have been
some instances that have put all that in jeopardy for us Americans. There are people making bad
decisions when showing others their opinions on campuses. In the article Hate speech vs Free
speech:Where is the Line on College Campuses, written by Rosanna Xia it discusses the controversy
of speakers coming to campuses and creating problems. The article Where is the Line on College
Campuses, brings up the issue of how free speech is now becoming a problem for both students and
staff on college campuses. There have been many riots and violent behaviors following certain
speakers who have come to some colleges. This was all due to the fact that some of the subjects can
really fire people up, and make them have a negative outlook on what is being said. These colleges are
now unsure of how to proceed with allowing the freedom of speech to be represented on campus,
simply for safety reasons. They don t want to take or limit the students and staffs first amendment but
these speakers are really causing an issue for them. Figuring out different ways to try and solve the
problem without creating another one, is definitely a struggle. One idea that they had was to hold Q A

John Ruskin s Unspoken Words
Unspoken words are harmless until they are spoken. One can think anything that he/she that comes
into their mind; however, no one will ever know what they are thinking. It is impossible to read minds;
therefore, no one can judge anyone based on what they know, their thoughts, and what they believe. In
fact, this is stated in John Ruskin s quote: What we think, or what we know, or what we believe is, in
the end, of little consequence. The only consequence is what we do. This quote primarily means that
one cannot get into trouble unless they take action to access them into a situation. Moreover, John
Ruskin s statement is correct. This precision is demonstrated in numerous political/economical based
pieces of literature, and further displayed by the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Implicit words are innocuous. One can think of anything that comes to their mind, and they cannot be
judged for it because no one knows what that thought is. Accordingly, thoughts, good or bad, are
harmless. A thought being innocuous is shown in George Orwell s novel, 1984. In this text, a
government attempts to take over the minds of its citizens. This happens if they are known to believe
in the wrong things. Wrong beliefs include believing in Big Brother as the nation s leader.
Furthermore, Winston, the main character, was down with the so called Big Brother, however, he
never stated his wrong beliefs (until revealed at the end). Because his thoughts were not spoken of, the
government did not find out that he wanted Big Brother to rule. In effect, Winston was not punished
for his beliefs, considering no one knew and could judge him on it. Not getting punishment shows that
there is no consequence in keeping your thoughts in, while the consequences can be extreme, getting
brainwashed, if you act on it. Similarly, within Barbara Ehrenreich s Serving in Florida, the narrator
went against her thoughts on speaking out in order to not be punished. In

Essay On Yellowstone National Park Fire
Yellowstone National Park had experienced its driest season during the summer of 1988. The lack of
fires the previous years had led to a flammable buildup of old trees in the forests. These trees were
ready to burn, and they did. Towns close to the park were clouded with smoke and people were told to
evacuate as the fire burned out of control. Although this scenario is viewed as a tragedy for wildlife
and tourists, there were benefits that came out of it.
The event had burned more than 8,500 acres of land and destroyed the forests found in Yellowstone,
but there were outcomes of it that made up for the damage. For example, animals like fish, deer, and
bears had died during the tragic accident, but it turns out that it was convenient for the animals who
had survived. This was seen as an advantage for the other animals because the plants that they had
eaten before were burned, so they were able to feast on the remains of the already dead animals. Also,
in spite of the plants and trees being burnt due to the fire, they became useful as they were made into
new nests for birds like woodpeckers and bluebirds. Furthermore, it has also been proven that there
was no long term negative effect on the animal population in the park. ... Show more content on

After the tall trees in the forests had burned to the ground, more sunlight was able to reach places of
the soil that it wasn t able to before. Together with the burned materials on the ground, the soil
absorbed even more nutrients. Besides plant growth, scientists have found evidence about how
allowing periodic fires were better for the ecosystem than preventing them. The prevented buildup of
woody debris is known to make fires larger, which would spread it across the area faster and make it
harder for firefighters to put an end to

African American History For The Past Century
The African American History from the Late 19th Century through the Present course was very
informative and educational. This course offered a broader view at looking and analyzing the history
of African American in the United States. Though, I have read extensively and possessed a small
collection of books on the subject, this course has affirmed what I have already knew as well as
elevating my knowledge on the subject. The course also opened up new ways to look and understand
certain facts about African American s experiences since Reconstruction.
There could not be a better textbook for this course than Freedom on My Mind. As I stated in a
previous assignment, the textbook is a mini reference encyclopedia of African American history for
the past century. The supporting documents throughout the textbook support the authors arguments as
well as providing the foundation for many unanswered questions that academics and intellectuals
should seek find answers from the government and people in leadership positions.
Parallel conclusions can be drawn to events involving African Americans in the late 19th century and
throughout the 20th century to current events with the exception that a few cases many end up in the
court. Discriminatory practices are wide spread in every sector of the American society. The fights for
school desegregation may have been won in the courtroom but segregationists found a way to
underfunded black schools. Affirmative Action may have provided a

Figurative Language In MLK Jr. s I Have A Dream
Martin Luther King Jr. was the man who wrote the speech entitled I have a dream and presented it to
nearly 250,000 people on August 23, 1963. In that speech, MLK Jr. used several different types of
figurative language/rhetorical devices in order to convey his message to the people on a deeper level.
These devices include personification, allusion, symbolism, hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and
anaphora. Personification is a form of figurative language that gives an object human qualities. One
example of this in MLK Jr. s writing would include I have a dream that one day this nation will rise
up, live out the true meaning of its creed . Here, MLK Jr. gives the U.S. the human qualities of being
able to rise up from the ground as well as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead of just straight up telling the audience the name of something, MLK Jr. was able to show the
reader who he ment with the use of context clues. Afterall, if any author can inform their audience of
the person or thing they are referencing without telling the audience who or what it actually is, they
can keep the audience in the mind set they want to have their audience in instead of having their mind
wander off, thinking about other things in which that person or object was or is currently involved in.
MLK Jr. took advantage of this by only referencing Lincoln through Emancipation Proclamation,
which was related to the topic at hand, racial equality of people of color. Symbolism itself is the use of
a symbol (like an object or fact) to represent an idea or quality that is not what the symbol itself
physically is. MLK Jr. used symbolism as a way to show the reader or listener to his speech his ideas
or his point in a clearer manner. One example of symbolism he used would be, Now is the time to rise
from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of justice. In that quote MLK talks
about a dark and desolate valley of segregation and the sunlit path of justice. The dark and desolate
valley of segregation is referring to the U.S. at that point in time. People were separated based on their
skin color and there was no social or legal justice for the people of dark colored skin. It was a horrible
time to live in. When MLK Jr. talks

  • 2. The Role Of A Vice President I claim that the role of Vice President of the United States of America is not an essential role in our government. The Vice President was originally picked based on who had the second most votes. The person who had the most votes would become the President. It was quickly realized that this process would no longer. It was most evident after the crisis of 1801, when there was multiple revotes due to constant ties in the votes. Especially in the early years Vice President was looked at as one of the most useless positions ever invented. Vice President John N. Donaldson s Beowulf Essay Donaldson s Beowulf Fate often saves an undoomed man when his courage is good Beowulf (Donaldson, 12) The passage that I analyzed spans the action when Beowulf returns to the halls of Heorot after a harsh battle with Grendel s mother. He returns to king Hrothgar in the great hall of Heorot to say that he has successfully completed his boast and killed Grendel s mother. Beowulf states that it has been a very difficult underwater battle and that he has barely escaped with his life, The fight would have been ended straightway if God had not guarded me (Donaldson, 29). During the festivities celebrating Beowulf s victory the King predicts that Beowulf will become the protector of the Geats until old age takes him and that he will be one of their greatest kings. Christian and Pagan Elements (p 28 31) GRAPH The many references to God in the pages (28 31) of Beowulf reflect Christian beliefs as opposed to pagan ones. In pagan worship, nature takes the place of God along with the belief that inanimate objects contain spirits. The Geats would refer to Grendel and his mother as God s enemy and descendants of Cain. Cain is a biblical reference to the story of Cain and Abel. In this story, Cain slays his brother Abel and consequently, is banished by God for all of eternity. Because of his role as the first murderer, Cain is thought to be the father of all monsters. Another example of Christianity which is evident in Beowulf is the fact that the eye for an eye belief is practiced. During the second raid of Heorot by Grendel s mother, a very close friend of King Hrothgar and great warrior named Aeschere is murdered. The monster, not abiding by the laws of the time, is subject to the eye for an eye belief and then has to be murdered ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hitler was attempting to convey to the German people that their race and culture was superior to all others and that Aryans were invincible. Hitler wanted to create a sense of pride, unity and stability among the people because stability was not a very strong factor among the masses who felt they had nothing to lose. Therefore, Hitler called his political cause quot;the movement quot;. Movement was, indeed, one of the mythic messages, movement away from the state of stagnation of the Weimar Republic, as the Nazis emphasized it repeatedly to persuade the masses, away from the shameful dictate of the Versailles peace treaty, away from true blood sucking parasites, Jews, (304) and forward towards the building of a quot;New Pure Germany quot; who would be a power to reckon with throughout Europe and the World at large. Although Hitler lacked his own characteristics of being a true Aryan (blond haired and blue eyed individual), he represented all of Germany as an ultimate ruler eliminating all other potential authorities that could possibly compete with him, just as a self evident mythology cannot tolerate other powers, which might challenge and lead to the dissolution of the mythic system. President Roosevelt Hypertension Background As late as about seven decades ago, elevated blood pressure was considered by many expert physicians to be necessary for the adequate perfusion of vital organs. It was deemed as an unavoidable, hence essential, component of the aging process leading to the coining of the term essential hypertension . High blood pressure (BP) was considered as probable natural and necessary compensatory phenomenon that should be left alone even if there were effective treatments (Hay, 1931; White, 1937). This notion was further strengthened by the observed elevated misery and premature death recorded for the patients that were treated for hypertension with the few drugs that were available at the time compared to those that were left untreated (Goldring, ... A few years later while at Yalta, Winston Churchill s personal physician noted in his diary that President Roosevelt appeared to be have had signs of hardening of the arteries disease and had a few months to live. Subsequent events demonstrated the truth of his diagnosis. President Roosevelt ultimately had a fatal hemorrhagic stroke 2 months later, and his death brought hypertension s potential as a deadly malady to the lime light (Mahmood, Levy, Vasan, Wang, 2014). Three years after Roosevelt s death, the pivotal National Heart Act was signed into law by President Truman. The Act created the path for the study of heart diseases and resulted in several studies including the Framingham Heart Study. The Framingham studies consistently showed that hypertension, such as hyperlipidemia, was associated with many cardiovascular morbidities such as stroke, heart failure, and heart attacks leading to premature deaths and the risk was clearly higher with higher blood pressure (systolic and diastolic). Even before the Framingham studies, many insurance companies had already begun measuring BP for policyholders physical examinations. I can t sit down for extended periods of time and enjoy a good book like I used to. When I was in elementary school, and even when I was going into high school, I was never seen without a book. When I was younger I could finish a new book every single week. But it was very easy for me to fall out of love with reading as I was being introduced to new technologies. It started with a Nintendo Wii. Sometimes I find it difficult to admit that I even owned one, but the best way to get over embarrassment is to talk about it right? Never the less, it was the beginning of the end of my love for reading. My earliest recollections about reading and writing were very enjoyable for me. Reading had a huge impact on my life. In a way, I guess you could even say that some of these experiences made me as literate and knowledgeable as I am today. • 17. Assignment On Social Identity Theory Essay TATA INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES MUMBAI GROUP WORK ASSIGNMENT ON SOCIAL IDENTITY THEORY Submitted to: Professor Vijay Raman Enrollment No.: M2015CF026 SOCIAL IDENTITY THEORY The Social Identity Theory was developed by Tajfel and Turner in 1979. The theory was originally developed to understand the psychological basis of intergroup discrimination. Tajfel in 1971 attempted to identify the minimal conditions that would lead members of one group to discriminate in favour of the in group to which they belonged and against another out group. In simple words Social identity is a person s sense of who they are based on their group membership. Later in 1979 Tajfel proposed that the groups (e.g. social class, family, company etc.) which people belonged to were an important source of pride and self esteem. Groups give us a sense of social identity: a sense of belonging to the social world. In order to increase our self image we enhance the status of the group to which we belong. For example, TISS is a top ranked university in India. We can also increase our self image by discriminating and holding prejudice views against the out group (the group we don t belong to). For example, the other slightly lower ranked institutes. Therefore we have divided students into them and us based through a process of social categorization. This is known as in group (us) and out group (them). Social identity theory states that the in group will discriminate against the out group to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hinton s The Outsiders tries to explain that he and his friends, the Greasers, are more than just thugs. They have low external expectations which also leads to low internal expectations. His friends have all grown up in poor conditions. His best friend, Johnny, is constantly beat at home and is only himself when he is with the gang. The Greasers are rivals with the Socs, a rich gang made of rich kids. Ponyboy thought that the Socs had it made, but after he meets Cherry he finds out that they also have external and internal expectations that make their lives not so made. Ponyboy and Cherry are outsiders because they see the world differently than the groups that they are in and have a window to escape stereotype threat and into society where they will be known as an individual, while Dally and Bob have decided that they are what their group is and they won t have that window. Ponyboy Curtis faces stereotype threat because of the actions of the group that he is in. They ll know we re hoods the minute they see us, I thought (Hinton 58). This quote shows that the Greasers face stereotype threat because people are scared just at the sight of Johnny and Ponyboy. Statements 8 and 10 reflect my personality as an individual and potential negotiator, and I strongly felt and believed that (i) I am an impatient person, therefore I do not like slow moving arguments, and (ii) I have a strong sense of humor, which, in a negotiation process, could help relieve tension or stress and could help smoothen the negotiation/bargaining process. Statements 16 and 22 talks about power and competition, respectively. Personally, I am not the kind of person who seeks power deliberately. I like power but I do not mind sharing it with another person. Since I know myself to be a team player and generally, a collaborating type of person, I find comfort in sharing power and having another person to support me in assuming the responsibilities that come with the power entrusted to me. Given my kind of personality in terms of power, it is not surprising, then, that while I enjoy a good competition, I like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sigmund Freud, an Austrian Neurologist, developed psychoanalysis and coined many terms and ideas about the mind. Freudian psychology can be used to further understand Golding s characters, Jack, Ralph, and Piggy. Jack, consumed by his impulsive urge to hunt, acts as Freud s id. Ralph demonstrates the term ego as he logically attempts to resolve problems. Piggy, concerned with morality and the words of his aunt, behaves as the superego. Jack, representing the Freudian term id, acts impulsively to satisfy his basic needs with obsessive hunting. Once on the island, Jack focuses on hunting and finding food to eat and keep himself alive. Like the id, Jack longs to fulfill his basic, instinctual needs and receive short term satisfaction, rather than long term fulfillment. The freudian term id is the part of the mind which deals with innate impulses and primary processes without consideration. Instead of worrying himself with tasks that require thinking ahead, like making shelters or fire, Jack s only concern is hunting. After the idea of being rescued is brought to his attention, Jack had to think... before he could remember what rescue was. Rescue? Yes, of course! All the same, I d like to catch a pig first... In my day, New York was fairly new but quickly gaining quite a reputation. MBW: New York City is a critical location in the history of the United States as well as in the world. I was born there quite early in the 20th century, which was an important century for America and New York was definitely a part of the national, group, and individual identity transformation taking place. I was a girl during the first great War and a young woman when the Great Depression hit. I could see the transformation of culture, of the world, of the country, and of women happening before me. My interest in photography and photojournalism helped me communicate, express, and capture such changes. Certainly, I am keen to understand your experiences as a writer in Europe. Fredrick Douglass arguably had the greatest impact on American society, especially African American society, in the nineteenth century. Douglass is credited as being an abolitionist, author, editor, and diplomat. He used literature, books, newspapers, and even speeches, to leave a long lasting mark on our society. • 42. Sealed Air Coporation Case Study Essay 1.0 INTRODUCTION The Sealed Air corporation is committed to market leadership through technological innovation. Ten years ago, the company was first to market with a highly successful coated air bubble packaging protection product, AirCap. However, market trends indicate a rapid displacement of coated bubble by a technologically inferior yet inexpensive uncoated product. Burgeoning demand for uncoated bubble poses a direct threat to the long term viability of the technologically superior, premium priced AirCap. Thus Sealed Air is situated at a critical standpoint. It can either continue to deal exclusively in the manufacture of high end coated bubbles emphasizing performance over price, or segment the market by introducing an ... The proliferation of packaging products and poor product education has caused confusion among end users. US consumers have traditionally viewed packaging supplies as a cost saving resource. Consequently, packaging engineers are accorded high status and influence roughly 40% of material purchase decisions. The US market is experiencing strong growth, driven in part by the growth of the coated and uncoated bubbles segment. However, AirCap s market share remains stagnant (Appendix A). It is apparent that a growing segment of end users are willing to forgo product quality for a lower price. European firms, in particular, are price conscious and less technically oriented; many firms view packaging supplies as expendable commodities. This has enabled manufacturers of technically inferior, inexpensive uncoated bubble to co opt AirCap customers with increasing success (Appendix B). 2.2 Competitive Analysis—there are many minor ones .GAFCEL in NY Sealed Air faces both direct and indirect competition in the flexible wrap market. Introduction 1.1 Background This is a study of humor in stand up comedy, focusing on analyzing a script using the Cooperative Principle and Flouting the Maxims by Grice (1975). Humor is used in our daily life to address social, cultural or political issues in an entertaining manner. Repeatedly, people express their opinion and ideas with short, funny, exaggerating, dramatic and sarcastic ways to achieve certain effects, thereby they could feel humorous. Also, humor is practical because without even realizing it, the audience will change their view on matters they were once deeply convinced with. It generally involves two main aspects: definition and pragmatics. In this article, I will only deal with pragmatics. Hancher (1980) explains that humor comes out by violating speech act in appropriate condition or associated conversational theory of implicature. Raskin (1985) differentiates humor dialogs from daily normal conversation and proposes the theory of humor s cooperative principle in which listeners do not take the speaker s words at face value. The speaker is not expected to tell the truth or to give related information. Attardo (1993) explains the substance of humor and shows the results behind violating Grice s cooperative principle. Many studies and researches attempt to illustrate the analysis of humor form the pragmatics point of view. However, only few works explore humor with discourse analysis. In this article I will apply the pragmatic theory using the cooperative principle by Grice (1975) and emphasizing on the four maxims merged with discourse analysis to reveal the result of humor in English in the light of flouting or non observance of Grice s cooperative ... Explaining And Discussing Dante s Vision Of Hell Explaining and Discussing Dante s Vision of Hell in The Inferno Dante s explanation of Hell has fascinated many individuals by the way it is explained, and more than likely made many use their mind and overthink it. When readers confront The Inferno, they might be surprised or blown minded by the way Dante explains what he went through. Many people after reading this might have changed their way of thinking of Hell because of Dante s lecture, or maybe some still thought the same. Not everyone thinks that there is a heaven nor a hell, everyone has different believes depending on their culture and most importantly their religion. Religion is what makes people decide what they believe in and what not to believe in. When Dante passes through the gates of Hell he knew right away it was trouble without a doubt, he explains that there is different levels in Hell depending on what that individual might have done on earth. Virgil is the one who leads Dante into the Gates of Hell, as soon as Dante enters he then hears countless cries from the many souls that lived on earth and lived their lives without being aware of their moral choices. Virgil leads Dante to Acheron, which was a river, and it marks the border of Hell according to the book. Across it there will be many dead souls waiting to be crossed. Charon was an old man who recognizes Dante and tells him to stay away from the dead in Hell but then troubles them no longer. Unexpectedly fire and wind rises up from the ... He has such an outstanding lack of hope, that results in his dependance on Shawshank to the point where he chooses to end his life rather than live in the free world. We were taught to memorize our amendments and to know the meaning behind them. It is something we have been taught to not let anyone get in the way of. But lately in the news and media there have been some instances that have put all that in jeopardy for us Americans. There are people making bad decisions when showing others their opinions on campuses. In the article Hate speech vs Free speech:Where is the Line on College Campuses, written by Rosanna Xia it discusses the controversy of speakers coming to campuses and creating problems. The article Where is the Line on College Campuses, brings up the issue of how free speech is now becoming a problem for both students and staff on college campuses. There have been many riots and violent behaviors following certain speakers who have come to some colleges. This was all due to the fact that some of the subjects can really fire people up, and make them have a negative outlook on what is being said. These colleges are now unsure of how to proceed with allowing the freedom of speech to be represented on campus, simply for safety reasons. They don t want to take or limit the students and staffs first amendment but these speakers are really causing an issue for them. One can think anything that he/she that comes into their mind; however, no one will ever know what they are thinking. It is impossible to read minds; therefore, no one can judge anyone based on what they know, their thoughts, and what they believe. In fact, this is stated in John Ruskin s quote: What we think, or what we know, or what we believe is, in the end, of little consequence. The only consequence is what we do. This quote primarily means that one cannot get into trouble unless they take action to access them into a situation. Moreover, John Ruskin s statement is correct. One can think of anything that comes to their mind, and they cannot be judged for it because no one knows what that thought is. Accordingly, thoughts, good or bad, are harmless. A thought being innocuous is shown in George Orwell s novel, 1984. In this text, a government attempts to take over the minds of its citizens. This happens if they are known to believe in the wrong things. Wrong beliefs include believing in Big Brother as the nation s leader. Furthermore, Winston, the main character, was down with the so called Big Brother, however, he never stated his wrong beliefs (until revealed at the end). Because his thoughts were not spoken of, the government did not find out that he wanted Big Brother to rule. In effect, Winston was not punished for his beliefs, considering no one knew and could judge him on it. Not getting punishment shows that there is no consequence in keeping your thoughts in, while the consequences can be extreme, getting brainwashed, if you act on it. Similarly, within Barbara Ehrenreich s Serving in Florida, the narrator went against her thoughts on speaking out in order to not be punished. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. Essay On Yellowstone National Park Fire Yellowstone National Park had experienced its driest season during the summer of 1988. The lack of fires the previous years had led to a flammable buildup of old trees in the forests. These trees were ready to burn, and they did. Towns close to the park were clouded with smoke and people were told to evacuate as the fire burned out of control. Although this scenario is viewed as a tragedy for wildlife and tourists, there were benefits that came out of it. The event had burned more than 8,500 acres of land and destroyed the forests found in Yellowstone, but there were outcomes of it that made up for the damage. For example, animals like fish, deer, and bears had died during the tragic accident, but it turns out that it was convenient for the animals who had survived. This was seen as an advantage for the other animals because the plants that they had eaten before were burned, so they were able to feast on the remains of the already dead animals. Also, in spite of the plants and trees being burnt due to the fire, they became useful as they were made into new nests for birds like woodpeckers and bluebirds. Furthermore, it has also been proven that there was no long term negative effect on the animal population in the park. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 49. African American History For The Past Century The African American History from the Late 19th Century through the Present course was very informative and educational. This course offered a broader view at looking and analyzing the history of African American in the United States. Though, I have read extensively and possessed a small collection of books on the subject, this course has affirmed what I have already knew as well as elevating my knowledge on the subject. The course also opened up new ways to look and understand certain facts about African American s experiences since Reconstruction. There could not be a better textbook for this course than Freedom on My Mind. As I stated in a previous assignment, the textbook is a mini reference encyclopedia of African American history for the past century. The supporting documents throughout the textbook support the authors arguments as well as providing the foundation for many unanswered questions that academics and intellectuals should seek find answers from the government and people in leadership positions. Parallel conclusions can be drawn to events involving African Americans in the late 19th century and throughout the 20th century to current events with the exception that a few cases many end up in the court. Discriminatory practices are wide spread in every sector of the American society. The fights for school desegregation may have been won in the courtroom but segregationists found a way to underfunded black schools. Affirmative Action may have provided a ... In that speech, MLK Jr. used several different types of figurative language/rhetorical devices in order to convey his message to the people on a deeper level. These devices include personification, allusion, symbolism, hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and anaphora. Personification is a form of figurative language that gives an object human qualities. One example of this in MLK Jr. s writing would include I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up, live out the true meaning of its creed . Instead of just straight up telling the audience the name of something, MLK Jr. was able to show the reader who he ment with the use of context clues. Afterall, if any author can inform their audience of the person or thing they are referencing without telling the audience who or what it actually is, they can keep the audience in the mind set they want to have their audience in instead of having their mind wander off, thinking about other things in which that person or object was or is currently involved in. MLK Jr. took advantage of this by only referencing Lincoln through Emancipation Proclamation, which was related to the topic at hand, racial equality of people of color. Symbolism itself is the use of a symbol (like an object or fact) to represent an idea or quality that is not what the symbol itself physically is. MLK Jr. used symbolism as a way to show the reader or listener to his speech his ideas or his point in a clearer manner. One example of symbolism he used would be, Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of justice. In that quote MLK talks about a dark and desolate valley of segregation and the sunlit path of justice. The dark and desolate valley of segregation is referring to the U.S. at that point in time.
