Philosophy Paper On John Locke

Philosophy Paper 1
John Locke believes our ideas originate from intuitive knowledge based on our own experiences.
Locke states, We know that we exist on immediate reflection because of the nature of
consciousness, not because of any poor knowledge hidden within us (pg. 201). In this quote,
Locke explains how his ideas originate. He believes that our knowledge is based on experience of
what we learn in nature rather than in a pre existing hidden knowledge. This belief is what is
usually called the white paper or tabula rasa theory (pg. 201).
The white paper, according to Locke, is the tabula rasa, a blank slate that has no characteristics until

Some examples of secondary qualities are taste, color, and smell. In all these examples,
perceptions fuel our mind with what we see and how we see it. An apple can look very shiny and
can have the appearance of being red, but those are only perceptions of our mind.
It is possible to obtain certain knowledge from matters of fact because both sides of an argument
in matters of fact can be conceivable. Therefore, one would have both sides or opinions to an idea
which would lead people to obtain certainty.
Hume s fork of knowledge represents a metaphorical fork of two beliefs that seem to contrast
amongst each other. The specific beliefs in the fork of knowledge are relations of ideas and
matters of fact. The first side is called relations of ideas. Relations of ideas are propositions
known with perfect certainty that can be demonstrated using the mind alone. Thus, they do not
rely on the existence of anything (beyond the mind). If one would deny a specific relation of idea
statement, the sentence would end up sounding in an absurd and nonsense fashion. For example,
if someone stated the fact; all triangles have three sides, its opposite would be, not all triangles
have three sides. This statement is nonsense because a shape or figure that has three sides to it is
and always will be a called a triangle. Thus, relations of ideas must be true statements. These carry
the weight of necessity because they are essentially necessary

Earth Liberation Front
Front does is make sure that no harm that comes to human life with their attacks. The most common
targets of the Earth Liberation Front are large business corporations, such as ski resorts and large
home development companies. Others tend to be research centers that test their products on
animals. The Earth Liberation Front in the United Statesis best known for their destruction of Vail
Ski Lodge in Colorado causing $12million in damage (Dejevsky, 1998). On October 18, 1998
Vail Ski Lodge had five buildings and four ski lifts reduced to ashes because Vail Inc. was given
permission to expand their resort. This expansion would tear down around 800 acres of forest

rising in England members started to fear that they would lose their support if the group was tied
to illegal actions. The group also believed that the legal means they use, mass protests, civil
disobedience, and education, could only do so much against those harming the Earth, especially
when their country s own legal system could stop their legal actions. Members of the group
believed that illegal actions were needed to help the eco resistance movement. These members
argued that illegal action would aid their movement in the same way similar actions have aided the
Animal Liberation Front. The group allowed those who still wanted to commit ecotage and use
direct action to branch off and create their own group called the Earth Liberation Front in honor of
the group they are copying, the Animal Liberation Front (Best Nocella, 2006). In recent years, the
Earth Liberation Front has begun to move in a new direction. With the new research on climate
change, the group believes their actions, such as bombing, arson, and other property destruction, is
contributing to the rise of greenhouse gases, and is slowly killing the earth while also burdening
the taxpayer with reconstruction efforts (Phillips,

Business Gross Domestic Products
What is Gross Domestic Product?

1. What was Real GDP for 2009? The GDP for 2009 was 3.1 In 2009, GDP started to improve after
four quarters of decline during The Great Recession. Nominal GDP for 2009 rebounded to $14.418

Real GDP for 2009 was 13,973.7

National income accounting records the level of activity in accounts such as total revenues earned
by domestic corporations, wages paid to foreign and domestic workers, and the amount spent on
sales and income taxes by corporations and individuals residing in the country.
h. What is the difference between GNP and NI? GNP measures the market value of all final
goods and services produced by a country s citizens or residents. The difference is subtle but
important. GNP excludes economic activity that occurs in the U.S. but is owned by foreigners
and includes American economic activity that occurs in other countries. GDP is place based
whereas GNP is ownership based. So, if a foreigner creates an Internet startup in Silicon Valley, this
will count as GDP, but not GNP. If General Electric opens a new plant in Poland, this investment
will be included in GNP, but not GDP. i. How did NI change from 2008? In 2008, the money value
of GDP expands to $4,500m but during the year, inflation is 3% causing the general index of prices
to rise from a 2007 base year value of 100 to 103 in 2008.
j. What caused these changes? The financial crisis was created from the housing bubble and the
mortgage industry. Additionally, this caused a fall in national income, which lead growth in GDP
in negative territory. I changed

Computer And Smartphone Addiction ( S ) Are Becoming More...
Computer and smartphone addiction(s) are becoming more and more prevalent every year.
From a 1 year old children to grown adult men and women. At first glance, these electronics look
harmless. But, if used in excess, someone can easily become addicted and not even know it.
Smartphones have social media apps such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter; that s only
naming a few. Many people around the world habitually use and check on these apps, on an
hourly to an everyday basis. Continuously checking these apps will ultimately lead to addiction if
not recognized and controlled. Computers have the same effect along with help from the
internet; video games, Netflix, Youtube, can all entertain someone for a few hours. That time
can easily be doubled, tripled and/or quadrupled, because of how entertained or bored someone
can be. Society needs to start realizing how much time they are spending on their smartphones
and computers. There has to be some sort of equilibrium to establish, in order to not cause
addiction or obsessive behavior. Smartphones and computers are going to keep growing and
expanding for decades. Technology impacts most of us in our life; we are surrounded and
engulfed by it. Our lives have been made easier and a little more fun by the help of technology. For
example, computers and smartphones. But, these technologies could actually be quite harmful. Can
people really become addicted to these technologies? Cooke 2 Over the last decade, computers and

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Immigration
Immigration is the movement through which an individual permanently moves from their place of
residence from one country to another. Immigration is a topic which divides political parties and
general debate. Whilst some people see the positives of immigration, such as the filling of skill
gaps in low and highly skilled jobs, others see the negatives of immigration, such as the strain on
services such as the NHS, schools and housing.
Firstly, there are clear benefits to immigration. Different communities have moved to Great Britain
from as early as 250AD, such as the Indian, Irish, African and Jewish communities. Immigration
has a long history. However, high levels of immigration started during the period of 1946 1948.
This was around the end of the second world war, when there were labour shortages in Britain and
the rest of Europe. The government had to look for immigrants to fill these shortage gaps. In
particular157,000 Polish citizens allowed to settle in the UK partly because of ties and connections
made during the war years.
The government was unable to recruit enough people from Europe to fill these labour shortages
and so turned towards west India. Many men from the West Indies had fought for the mother
country and had moved back to civilian life in their home country where there were few work
opportunities. Their sense of patriotism, coupled with the need of work, steered them back towards
the UK. On the 22nd of June 1948, the ship Windrush docked at Tilbury in

1601 Poor Law Essay
In the 16th century the Welfare State was non existent in Britain. The result of this was the
increase in people subjected to living in absolute poverty due to them not having the basic living
requirements. They also had no access to services such as health care, or education as these were
not free institutions. The ruling era of Queen Elizabeth I identified that the paupers required some
form of help and as a result introduced the Act for the Relief of the Poor in 1601. This was the
beginning of state intervention. It was a national policy set up, that was governed at local level.
The purpose of the act was to prevent the poor from becoming vagrants. This meant local parishes

The conclusion on the 1601 Poor Law was that the outdoor relief which was provided by through
local parishes was increasing and creating a generation of workers to endure an idleness attitude.
So consequently the 1601 Act was abolished after 200 years due to the effect of the Industrial
Revolution. It was then replaced with the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834 that was created to
reduce expenditure on aiding the poor apart from those in exceptional circumstances. The concept
of the act was to create a system based upon the workhouse. A workhouse was an institution built
to provide the paupers with accommodation, clothing and food in exchange for long hours of
manual labour. The families who entered the workhouse were segregated from one another, forced
to oblige by strict rules and wear uniform provided. The conditions within the workhouse were
deliberately inhumane and workers were treated terribly. However this was the only alternative for
the poor as they had no other means of receiving finical support. This was part of the procedure to
reduce the number of paupers from seeking support from the state and create

Examples Of Stamina In Night By Elie Wiesel
The Holocaust was a time of great suffering and hopelessness for Jewish people. About two thirds
of the entire Jewish population was brutally killed. One third of all Jews persevered and survived
the appalling events happening in and out of the concentration camps. One boy, out of that one
third that survived and pushed through was Elie Wiesel. Elie Wiesel, the holocaustsurvivor, displays
stamina in his memoir physically, mentally, and spiritually.
First off, Elie Wiesel demonstrates stamina by proving his perseverance physically. In the memoir
Night, the text states, I went straight to my block. My wound had reopened and was bleeding: the
snow under my feet turned red (pg. 82). The example tells how Elie didn t stay in the infirmary
and went back to his block. While walking, his fresh wound reopened and bled. This can prove that

The memoir claims, Eight simple short words. Yet that was the moment when I left my mother...
And I walked with my father, with the men (pg. 29). The text explains how Elie left his mother and
continued on with the men. This can prove to be mental stamina because instead of being sad and
miserable about leaving his mother, he stays strong and continues walking. Additionally, Wiesel
shows mental perseverance by not showing his emotions when someone got hanged. In Elie Wiesel
s memoir, he says, I remember that on that evening, the soup tasted better than ever...(pg. 63). The
example describes an instance where Wiesel says that the soup tasted great that evening. He says
this because watching the hanging didn t bother him because he had witnessed so many other acts
of dehumanization previously. This example shows stamina because he is demonstrating that he is
not bothered by the horrifying act and is acting like nothing is off. Elie Wiesel proves his mental
perseverance and strength during the

Group Orientation Research Paper
Methods of Preparing/Orienting Members Group orientation is a crucial step in establishing a
safe and nurturing environment for all members. Group leaders will give an overview of the
group and its purpose of developing a support system of women who have given up a child or
children for adoption. Members and group leaders will be asked to introduce themselves and
group expectations will be discussed. Group leaders will stress the importance of confidentiality,
what is said in group must stay in group. Members will also be reminded that this group is a
support group so supportive encouragement is encouraged whereas negativity is discouraged. The
Group Setting (Structural Physical) This group is geared to provide support for women who have
placed their child/children up for adoption. Due to the subject matter, the group will remain closed
so that the women can build trusting relationships with one another throughout the group sessions.
The familiarity of group members will create a more welcoming environment for processing
feelings and emotions. Group membership will be voluntary since not all women who give
children up for adoption cope in the same way and therefore a group setting may not be beneficial
for everyone. The support group room will be warm and welcoming but not constricting. The room
size will be large enough to comfortably fit... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Through the first day and into the early part of the second, the flight seemed to be going well

Commander James Lovell and LM Pilot Fred Haise were in the process of completing a

astronauts heard and felt an explosion. It got their immediate attention and, during the next few
minutes as they and the ground controllers made a rapid assessment of the condition of the
spacecraft, it became apparent that two of the three fuel cells in the Service Module had gone

Analysis Of Dalton Conley s You May Ask Yourself
Dalton Conley s book, You May Ask Yourself, defines sociological imagination as, The ability to
connect the most basic, intimate aspects of an individual s life to seemingly impersonal and
remote historical forces (Conley 2015, pg. A 11). Sociological Imagination is the idea of being
able to step outside of the box, and evaluate society from an alternative point of view. Symbolic
Interactionism, norms, socialization, and the idea of understanding yourself vs. understanding
the social aspect of society, are some of the key concepts mentioned throughout this paper, to
help break apart what the sociological imagination consists of. Society is changing a lot, and
change can sometimes make it hard to cope with the world around us. Sociological imagination
is a lot deeper than just common sense. Author of The Sociological Imagination, C. Wright Mills
states, Talking about sociological imagination is what makes us feel more grounded in the face
of all these changes (C. Wright Mills). If I keep an open mind, and pay attention to the larger
world around me, I am better to understand the connections of what is going on in my individual
life, and what is going on in the social world. The sociological imagination has two lenses to it, the
individual lens, and the society lens. The individual lens deals with personal troubles; Individuals
comparing themselves to everyone around them. For example, with the media, we see all these
commercials, and ads that portray false

How the Media Influences the Public Perception of Science...
Sometimes careless science publishing can weaken the public s confidence in science and the
government. The Media is enormously powerful and leading and will influence people s opinions
on everything. There are plenty of stories in the media that will change the public s perception of
science or even make them see a new perception. Sometimes these stories are just written to scare
the public into believing a certain thing just so they can sell their stories.
Stories sometimes are true and sometimes they are false but it is up to the public to believe in
what is right and what is wrong. In this day and age, where information is available at the touch of
a mouse, it s not surprising that the media is a particularly dominant and powerful ... Show more

The tabloid newspaper is the Sun and the broadsheet newspaper is the Times.
Firstly I will analyse the story written by the Sun, this tabloid covered the same story as the
Times and therefore we can find out their intentions. The Sun had the following bold headline
Deadly strain confirmed , I can clearly see from the start that they are trying to create a scare in
the public and capture the reader s attention very fast, this is because they don t tell you what
deadly strain they are talking about, if I were to see this in a newspaper lying around I would
pick it up because it already got me worried and caught my attention. This has made me think, are
they trying to inform the reader or just trying to sell their story? You only learn what the deadly
strain is after you read paragraph 1 so this proves my point.
On the 3rd paragraph the Sun states the following the swan had the strain which can be fatal to
humans. Instead of just using the swan had the H5N1 strain the Sun chooses to create more of an
impact by using the word fatal and implying it to humans. This makes the beginning of the article
to cause fear, evoke an element of alarm and perhaps imply that the readers should be fearful for
their own health. The article also mentions experts rushing to the scene to

Theme Of Dichotomy In Jane Eyre
Charlotte BrontГ« s Jane Eyre, has not only been interpreted as a novel advocating Victorian
conventional norms, but one that exercises the fiery act of female rebellion against hypocritical,
patriarchal oppression. With reference to the quotation provided, along with additional extracts
from the text, the angelic representation of Jane Eyrealong with the demonic demonstration of
Bertha Rochester, informed by the angel demon dichotomy, is not only significant in terms of the
language and imagery used to portray the female binary, but the source from which the
representation is derived, particularly Mr Rochester and Jane herself. Themes concerning the
challenging of patriarchal oppression for the purpose of achieving female individualism, places the
absolutism of the Victorian angel demon dichotomy under threat. Central to the attainment of self
identification, is the ability to have a voice, of which Bertha has none, emphasising a rupture within
the sustainability of the feminist narrative, from a postcolonial perspective.

Optics In The Tuxedo
Common wisdom tells us that if something looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and talks like a
duck, then most likely, it is a duck. We all know, however, that this is not always true.
The idea of optics is captured perfectly in a scene from the movie The Tuxedo. Jackie Chan is
working for a millionaire and in the scene the millionaire turns to Jackie and says, It s 90% the suit.
What he is referring to is the optics of a situation what perception the picture creates.
In Australian politics, the Federal Treasurer, Mr. Joe Hockey, was photographed smoking a cigar at
the time when he was bringing down a tough budget in parliament. The imagery was all wrong
and the press had a field day depicting Mr. Hockey as a fat cat, smoking cigars while the common
man battled. The depiction was completely unfair and most people knew it, but it was an
association Mr. Hockey was never able to fully shake.
Optics is the non verbal, subliminal messaging that surrounds the actual message. When it comes to
stakeholder management, optics is central to everything. It is the backbone to effective
communications.
Optics are why politicians kiss a baby whenever there is a camera ... Show more content on

they will see is a stuffed shirt coming from head office to give them news they assume they don t

Equally, if the manager arrived wearing factory uniform, the staff would question who the manager
was trying to impress. They might reject the approach, and say, You are not one of us. Once again,

Historical Accuracy Of The Amistad
The title of the movie is called Amistad, which debuted December 25, 1997 and was directed by
Steven Spielberg; the main actors are: Morgan Freeman, Anthony Hopkins, Djimon Hounsou, and
Matthew McConaughey; the main purpose of the film is to show how the Amistad Case played a
significant role in the start of the Civil War and the hardships of illegal slaves on their passage to
be free.
At the beginning of the movie, a slave ship, named La Amistad, transporting illegal slaves from
Cuba was conquered by the slaves. Cinque, an illegal slave, demands that the Spanish owners take
them back to Africa. At a stop to get water, the ship was discovered by Americans. The slaves were
transported to America and thrown in jail. They are trialed for murder.... Show more content on

I do not think the movie depicted America in the 1800 s well. I have seen an abundance of
movies and pictures where the 1800 s looked more realistic than in Amistad. There were special
settings that captured my attention. When Cinque was telling the translator about how he was
captured, the setting in Africa was unanticipated. I was looking forward to the scene being more
along the lines of jungles and wild animals, but instead it looked like a scene from Jamaica.
Another scene that caught my attention were the courtroom settings. Having knowledge about
the size of older buildings and rooms within those buildings, I knew things were not as spacious
as they are now. The movie did a fabulous job of showing that. In the movie, everyone looked
compacted into one space and it looked over capacitated. The judge s stand did not look so
superior like it does now. The plaintiff and defendant stands looked like regular tables and desks.
The movie did a great job replicating a slave ship. When the slaves were on the ship, their
clothing, hair, and props like shackles, weapons, and chains looked realistic. It had an excellent
impact to the storyline of the slaves. The clothing worn by the English men, soldiers, and Queen
Isabella, were accurate regarding how they dressed in the 1800 s. The way they spoke also gave it
a more realistic feel. Having English, Mende, and Spanish spoken throughout the movie made it

Negative Campaigning Toward A Tipping Point
Negative Campaigning Toward a Tipping Point
Opposition research is a key part in modern campaigns, however the increase in negative
campaigning coupled with advancements in research techniques will create a more hostile
election cycle. Negative campaigning has been a method that helped control those with a lot of
outside factors affecting them prior to being elected. The right campaign ad with fact checked
information is an amazing asset to a campaign team. Media has progressed to a point where they
demand live, off the cuff news twenty four seven from the campaign trail. This makes it hard for
the well calculated responses the political community is used to less desirable. The right conditions
have been meet to allow for an anomaly to take advantage of negative campaigning and using more
media desirable taglines to gain popularity. This popularity comes at a cost however; the cost is
damaging the success of getting the public to be more involved in politics. Many organizations,
politically affiliated and otherwise, have been created for the purpose of getting the public to vote
on election day. These organizations strive to ensure the average person understands how important
it is to vote for yourself and the community. Unfortunately, negatively campaigning has been shown
to disillusion the public and demotivate them to get involved in the political process. With the
general public getting less involved, the opportunity for the more devoted and the more extreme to

The World s Foremost Economic And Military Power
The USA is the world s foremost economic and military power, with global interests and an
unmatched global reach.
America s gross domestic product accounts for close to a quarter of the world total, and its
military budget is reckoned to be almost as much as the rest of the world s defence spending put

The country is also a major source of entertainment: American TV, Hollywood films, jazz, blues,
rock and rap music are primary ingredients in global popular culture.
The United States originated in a revolution which separated it from the British Crown. The
constitution, drafted in 1787, established a federal system with a division of powers which has
remained unchanged in form since its inception.

Globalization Vs Globalization
Twenty first century is defined by globalization, something Thomas L. Friedman unquestionably
agrees with in his book The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty first Century.
Globalization can immediately be correlated with businesses, but such should not be the case in this
circumstance. Globalization, as a matter of fact, also takes its effect on cultures worldwide. For
example, thanks to globalization, western cultures are able to perceive the cultures of other
countries around the world, some of which are found to be exotic. However, when this occurs, there
is a certain concern that must be brought up: the issue with looking at the world from a western
lens. Chandra Talpade Mohanty writes in her work Under Western Eyes: Feminist Scholarship and
Colonial Discourses that the definition of colonization she wishes to invoke here is a
predominantly discursive one, focusing on a certain mode of appropriation and codification of
scholarship and knowledge about women in the third world by particular analytic categories
employed in specific writings on the subject which take as their referent feminist interests as they
have been articulated in the U.S. and Western Europe. It is worth mentioning that the safety
measure of identifying the lens through which one looks at another cultureor subject is a necessity. I,
for example, can talk about the Western cultureand the Indian culture without such notice because I
have been indigenously part of both. However, the

Modern Music During The Baroque Era
The term Baroque has been widely acknowledged as a period in Western European Art Music
lasting for 150 years from early 17th to mid 18th century. The word itself is originated from
barroco in Portuguese meaning oddly shaped pearl , which best describes the visual and details of
the buildings existed during that period. Its flamboyant and ornate details of the building is what
causes ornamentations and harpsichords to become an essential element of Baroque music. Bach,
ornamentation, and harpsichord are few of the most recognisable elements of Western Art music
during the Baroque period. Nonetheless, we all came to a second realisation that the Baroque era
lasted for more than 150 years, meaning that it has its own remarkable history and... Show more

S. Bach, G. F. Handel, and Domenico Scarlatti. Antonio Vivaldi, Claudio Monteverdi, Couperin,
Jean Phillippe Rameau and Jean Baptiste Lully are other popular names in the Baroque era. Each
composer specialises in different instrument compositions and techniques. Out of all the names
mentioned, J. S. Bach remains to this day, one the greatest composers of both the Baroque era
and all time. Each of these composers specialise in different areas or compositions and
instruments. Working extensively with keyboard instruments such as the organ and harpsichord, a
few of J. S. Bach s well known compositions include his Brandenburg Concertos, Goldberg
Variations, and St. Matthew s Passion. G. F. Handel himself composed Italian operas, oratorios,
anthems, and organ concertos. His most popular work of all time is the Hallelujah chorus from
the oratorio Messiah, which went on to become the most popular Baroque work and considered as
a choice of piece often performed in Christmas time. Domenico Scarlatti on the other hand
composed in a number of musical forms, but is best known for composing 555 keyboard sonatas.
As a major instrument of the Baroque era, the harpsichord has parallel strings used for the players
to pluck in order to produce sound. This instrument is highly used and heard in compositions such
as J. S. Bach s toccatas and Domenico Scarlatti s piano sonatas. Unlike the modern piano, the

Viva La Vida Symbolism
Literary Analysis Essay
Power is always dangerous. Power attracts the worst and corrupts the best, states Edward Abbey,
an American author. When it comes to the mind, ability is a dangerous possession to own. Once
the idea of control has entered one s mind, it can make them perform actions they didn t know
they were capable of. While responsibility and authority may seem like a positive and beneficial
quality, it can cause a person to lose control of themselves. In The Count of Monte Christo and
Viva La Vida, the writer s use of metaphors and symbolism portrays that excess power can lead to
dishonesty as well as selfishness.
In the Count of Monte Christo and Viva La Vida , the writer s use of metaphors compares power to
lies and deception. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Magazines, news, and social media all portray celebrities to be heroic and selfless people. All the
kind, charitable acts these people do, are only for show. All they want is for their reputation to
remain intact, but what s the point of having a good reputation if everything they do is an act?
Celebrities may seem like they are kind people although most of them are using deception to get
what they want. His face was pale and his shirt was covered in blood. He went upstairs again
with the lighted candle and came back down a moment later with the diamond in his hand
(Dumas 194). Cadaverous was only pretending to be kind to the jeweler and loyal to his wife in
order to get the only thing he truly desired: fortune. He put on a mask and used it to his
advantage. Knowing that he possessed the ability to manipulate everyone into doing what he
wanted, the capability got to him and he went insane. After killing the jeweler, his wife, stealing
45,000 francs, and a diamond, he really got what he wanted. But at what price? The diamond
Caderousse stole represents the greed and selfishness he carries in his heart because of all the
control he thought he obtained. This same reaction happens to the speaker in the song Viva La
Vida . I used to rule the world, seas would rise when I gave the word...One minute I held the key,
next the walls were closed on me (Coldplay 1 and 3). This person held the whole world in their
hands, hypothetically, but with all the control and power they acquired, they were able to tell
people what to do because of the influence he possessed. One day, it took over him and he no
longer was doing what he wanted to be doing. He was using his influence for evil, not for good the
way he wanted to. The key represents the authority and responsibility the speaker had while the
walls represent the people realizing

The Importance Of Scientific Qualities And Scientific...
According to the grade scale that is laid out in the science lesson plan one student received a D
grade, one student received a C grade, twenty five students received a B grade, and two students
received an A grade. Going with the science grade book data independently, only one student isn t at
mastery level and would need the content re taught to them. The objective states that the student
will need to identify human qualities and scientific habits of mind that famous scientists in history
may have possessed. First, let s break the meaning down for human qualities and scientific habits of
the mind to understand if the formative assessment aligns with the objective. Human qualities are
being empathetic, intuitive, creative, passionate, a good listener, and persuasive (Gabriel Petit,
2014). Scientific habits of the mind are as follows; logical thinking, quantitative learning, deductive
reasoning, proper questioning, and reliance of sound evidence (Scientific Habits of Mind, 2017).
After evaluating the questions only one question would coincide with this objective. The remaining
five questions have to do with events or details of the three scientists lives.
The standards attached to this lesson plan states the student should develop abilities necessary to do
scientific inquiry and understand scientific inquiry. Students should also be able to develop an
understanding of science as a human endeavor and the history of science. Again, the formative
assessment doesn t

Our Fear Of Immigrants Analysis
Fear and Immigration? In the essay Our Fear of Immigrants, Jeremy Adam Smith writes about why
it is we fear immigrants. Smith divides his essay with numerous examples and comparisons,
through biological, sociological and psychological explanations. As unorthodox as it sounds, our
hesitation towards outsiders can be explained in various ways we never believed imaginable; in
Smith s investigation, he unveils the bewildering reality about the contrasts between ourselves, as
adults, and children when it comes to immigration. He begins with a distressful story of a
classroom of 4th graders from Berkeley, California, who missed their classmate named Rodrigo
when he didn t return from Christmas break, due to his parents expired visa. Rodrigo s classmates
thought that it was so unfair, that they complained to their congressmen. Smith then contrasts this
response of empathetic children to unsympathetic adults from Berkeley, California, who protested
against immigrants who seek shelter in the U.S for the families. Smith pondered the questions:
Why do immigrants provoke such strong feelings of both empathy and revulsion, a polarization that
pits fourth graders in Berkeley against the citizens of Murrieta? and What characteristics and
qualities do Rodrigo s classmates possess... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Historical Leader Synthesis Essay On Sir Winston Churchill
Historical Leader Synthesis Essay on Sir Winston Churchill
Soaked in sweat, I ran to the library to get a book on a historical leader before they were all gone.
I would like to think I found a great leader, but I think one found me. As I was reading a book on
great leaders of World War II, I initially focused on American leaders, but Sir Winston S.
Churchill seemed fit my exact requirements. Sir Winston S. Churchill was a Visionary and
Ethical Leader. In the following pages, I will explain how Winston was a visionary leader and
how he used Inspirational Motivation and global diversity to gain advantage during World War II. I
will also explain how he critically thought through a gut wrenching decision by using Dr. Toner s
three Ps in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Harmon s (1991) article, he details a scene where Sir Winston Churchill is sitting around the
strategy table, debating the benefits of area bombing. Area bombing is a tactic where an area is
indiscriminately bombed, regardless of military objective. During the meeting Winston stood up
and proclaimed, Are we beasts, are we taking this too far (Harmon, 1991, p. 3). LM03, Ethical
Leadership, discusses Dr. Toner s three P s, which are principle, purpose, and people (DAF, 2014c,
p. 7). To me, Winston Churchill put the three P s in the correct order when he decided to
commence area bombings. He put the principle of freedom and justice before the purpose of
winning the war and finally, he put the people in their proper place of third. Had he not made
this decision, who knows how many more would have died. The air raids killed innocent women
and children, but many others today enjoy freedom and liberty because of this decision. The war
continued and as the German people became war weary, ended in 1945 due, in part, to Churchill
s proper use of the three P s. Making a decision like this takes guts, resolve, and most importantly
an ability to see the second and third order effects. Winston Churchill would not have made the
decision to area bomb had he not known that its effect on the German people would cause them
to lose their will to fight, therefore limiting the endless supply of troops Hitler seemed to be able
to acquire. This, to me, is why Course 14 intertwined the critical thinking and ethical leadership
modules. On Facione s scoring rubric from CF03, Critical Thinking, I would definitely have given
Winston s decision to use area bombing a 4 out of 4 (DAF, 2014b, p. 24). In the strategy brief, he
interpreted the evidence

Compare And Contrast Sixteen Candles And Ferris Bueller s...
1.After viewing both Sixteen Candles and Ferris Bueller s Day Off I would have to choose
Sixteen Candles to be my favorite of the two. My reasoning is because I feel the storyline and
characters were developed better, allowing the audience to feel a greater connection with the film.
When comparing the two films, Sixteen Candles comes across as more angst driven, with a strong
female lead. Ferris Bueller s Day Off has an obvious strong male lead character, with more humor
obvious throughout the film. The overall tone of Sixteen Candles is less upbeat than Ferris Bueller.
As the main character Samantha is struggling throughout the film with the acceptance of her family
forgetting her birthday, Ferris Bueller has no care in the world and refuses to be defeated. The
relationships in Ferris Bueller s Day Off are mainly friend to friend and student to authority. Sixteen
Candles depicts a more romantic aspect, with a love story being the main focus throughout.
2.Out of both of these films the one I find that strays mostly from John Hughes other teenage films
in Ferris Bueller s Day Off. Sixteen Candles, I found to be fitting with the other films because it
has a strong female lead, teen angst, and a major love story component. For example, Samantha
and Jake at the end of the film kissing in the candle light. A dramatic end scene kiss has been
depicted in Pretty in Pink as well. Ferris Bueller s Day Off on the other hand, is something
unlike any other John Hughes film. It is witty, and fast paced, not focusing on teen angst or
romance in any aspect. There are no love triangles, or finding out whether two main characters
will end up together. It takes another point of view from teenagers about being young and
enjoying life before it catches up with you. Ferris Bueller s Day Off also a strong theme of
relationships with authority figures, which we only see in the other John Hughes film, The
Breakfast Club. An example of this in the film is between Ferris and Mr. Rooney. There is
constant conflict between them, one example is when Ferris has Cameron prank call Mr. Rooney
s office. This shows not only Ferris disrespect for authority, but Mr. Rooney s disrespect for Ferris.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Dental Veneers
Dental veneers are thin custom made shells designed to cover the front surface of the teeth,
improving your appearance and enhancing your smile by altering the colour, shape, size and length
of your teeth. Dental veneers can be made from porcelain or resin composite material. Although
porcelain veneers are stain resistant and makes the teethappear brighter, resin veneers are thinner
and require less removal of the natural tooth surface before placement
Veneers are generally used to fix teeth that are discoloured, have gaps, are chipped and broken, are
misaligned, irregularly shaped, or have merely been worn down. These tooth imperfections can
arise from a variety of different reasons, such as: beverage intake (alcohol and caffeine are known
causes of staining) and unhealthy lifestyles (smoking, drug addictions and poor oral hygiene are the
main causes of tooth imperfection).
Getting dental veneers will require only three trips to the dentist. One for the consultation, and two
to make and apply the veneers. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

thickness of the veneer which will be bonded to the tooth. Once the enamel trimming has been
done, your dentist will create a model or impression of your teeth which will be sent to a dental
laboratory where your veneers will be constructed. It takes approximately 2 weeks for a dentist to
receive veneers from the laboratory, so during this period temporary dental veneers can be worn to

A Multi Disciplinary Team
Introduction
In 2011 there have been 49,900 women and 350 men that have been diagnosed with breast
cancer within the United Kingdom (Cancer Research UK 2014). Individuals who are undergoing
investigation for suspected breast disease can be referred for breast care services with symptoms
or are recalled from the breast screening programme. The National Health Service Breast
Screening Programme (NHSBSP) was introduced in 1988 which was due to the proposition of the
Forrest Report that had been published two years prior (1986).
This essay will attempt to discuss the theoretical principals of population screening as well as the
importance of diagnostic breast care services, with the influence of a multi disciplinary team.

The age range 50 69 is where mortality rate reduction was seen at its greatest. The main evidence
used in favour for breast screening and Forrest report came from the studies and randomised control
trials conducted in Sweden.
On the contrary Gotsche Olsen (2000) disputed the findings of the Swedish randomised trials,
claiming screening for breast cancer is unjustifiable, as there is inconsistency within the
randomisation of the trial, as two of these trials found no effect of screening on mortality. A meta
analysis was conducted by Gotsche Olsen on the Swedish Trials results. This meta analysis found
that for every 1000 women screened biennially throughout 12 years one breast cancer death is
avoided, whereas the total number of deaths is increased by six . Other studies that were conducted
in New York, Canada and Edinburgh had also been criticised on the methods of randomisation and
validity.
The Forrest report stated that there must be a clinical examiner, radiologist and a pathologist within
a multidisciplinary team to ensure that there is expert knowledge available in each health
profession. Breast Services should all have breast surgeons, nurses, radiographers, pathologists,
radiologists, oncologists, breast care services manager and clerical staff, this is what is
recommended by the NICE 2002 for the successful running of the unit. The use of mammography is
the first line of diagnostic investigation for women in the NHSBSP, Forrest

Cinematic Thought Experiments Of The Living Dead
Cinematic Thought Experiments of the Living Dead
Philosophical conceptions of consciousness represented through the zombie film The zombies that
George R. Romero showcases in Night of the Living Dead (1968) now dominate the film industry
as the prototype for the undead: the mindless corpse that is void of its prior consciousness. And the
preferred food source of the undead has become like law for any pop culture universe about
zombies even undead superheroes will eat people in the comic books from the Marvel Zombies
series. As the prototypical zombie thought experiment, the Night of the Living Dead allows the
audience to confidently respond to any questions about the undead s identity, actions, or morality
by referring to that void of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Romero s Mindless Undead I initiate the discourse on the purpose of consciousness by first
introducing Night of the Living Dead, as an effort to reveal an intuitive claim as a running theme of
the movie: consciousness is what distinguishes me from the living dead. Romero s Night of the
Living Dead can teach us about what our assumptions on the purpose of higher consciousness by
having it be the root feature that distinguishes the living from the undead. When Johnny dies and
his corpse comes back from the local cemetery, the consciousness of his mind is left behind there
remains only emptiness inside the zombie. As his consciousness vanishes, so does the person
that we used call Johnny the corpse itself is now just a mindless shell. The Romero zombie
comes back as completely subject to the zombie law of nature; leaving behind the mind, all that
they can do is what a zombie does and all zombies devour. The absolute mindlessness that
characterizes the zombies in Romero s creation, reflects on the idea, that, a free acting human being
can be reduced to nothing more than a mindless corpse by stripping away their consciousness. Also
apparent in the Night of the Living Dead, is the assumption, that, it is from consciousness that I
claim to have an identity, to act on reasons and to rise above my innate instincts all of which are
concepts

Essay on Robert Browning
The Jealous Monk
Robert Browning s, Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister involves a jealous monk with much hatred of,
Brother Lawrence, the perfect monk. Irony, diction, and syntax are clearly evident in this dramatic
monologue.
Throughout the poem the nameless monk is constantly expressing his anger and sarcasm through
the use of syntactical irony. This particular monkis angered at a fellow monk, as evidenced by
quot;If hate killed men, Brother Lawrence, God s blood, would not mine kill you! quot; which
seems ironic knowing he is a religious monk. He is taking out his anger to a great extent, which is
not good church practice. Obviously it seems that Brother Lawrence is ... Show more content on

As a monk, he plays the total opposite of an actual monk. He puts down the innocent Brother
Lawrence, when he himself is the rotten one. Browning expresses certain words with diction. A
monk does not watch girls wash their clothes and hair at the bank. Steeping tresses in the tank,
Blue black, lustrous, think like horsehairs, the selfish monk does this, not the innocent Brother
Lawrence. As a monk, one should not look upon women showering themselves and washing
clothes. Being the opposite of a monk he also owns a dirty book, My Scrofulous French
novel...If I double down its pages at the woeful sixteenth print, he also knows exact pages of the
book to look at. Towards the end of the poem the monk plans to rid himself of his fellow Brother,
by sending him to Hell. He speaks of slipping his French novel revealing quot;Belial s gripe,
quot; Belial being one of the classical devils of Hell, the Lord of Lies. One may determine that
the monk intends to present a false message to his Brother in order to damn his soul. It is clear
that he is not following his title as a monk; he is a traitor to his own name.
Throughout Browning s Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister , he exposes different devices used. Irony,
diction, and syntax all play a major role in each stanza. By

Polyphemus Is An Improper Host Of Odysseus
The Odyssey written by Homer is a classic tale of Odysseus s lengthy journey home to Ithaca. The
story includes many positive and negative examples of proper behavior of a host to his guest. A

  • 2. Philosophy Paper On John Locke Christian Hubbard Dr. Burgess Philosophy 101 September 27, 2017 Philosophy Paper 1 John Locke believes our ideas originate from intuitive knowledge based on our own experiences. Locke states, We know that we exist on immediate reflection because of the nature of consciousness, not because of any poor knowledge hidden within us (pg. 201). In this quote, Locke explains how his ideas originate. He believes that our knowledge is based on experience of what we learn in nature rather than in a pre existing hidden knowledge. This belief is what is usually called the white paper or tabula rasa theory (pg. 201). The white paper, according to Locke, is the tabula rasa, a blank slate that has no characteristics until someone experiences ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some examples of secondary qualities are taste, color, and smell. In all these examples, perceptions fuel our mind with what we see and how we see it. An apple can look very shiny and can have the appearance of being red, but those are only perceptions of our mind. It is possible to obtain certain knowledge from matters of fact because both sides of an argument in matters of fact can be conceivable. Therefore, one would have both sides or opinions to an idea which would lead people to obtain certainty. Hume s fork of knowledge represents a metaphorical fork of two beliefs that seem to contrast amongst each other. The specific beliefs in the fork of knowledge are relations of ideas and matters of fact. The first side is called relations of ideas. Relations of ideas are propositions known with perfect certainty that can be demonstrated using the mind alone. Thus, they do not rely on the existence of anything (beyond the mind). If one would deny a specific relation of idea statement, the sentence would end up sounding in an absurd and nonsense fashion. For example, if someone stated the fact; all triangles have three sides, its opposite would be, not all triangles have three sides. This statement is nonsense because a shape or figure that has three sides to it is and always will be a called a triangle. Thus, relations of ideas must be true statements. These carry the weight of necessity because they are essentially necessary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The most common targets of the Earth Liberation Front are large business corporations, such as ski resorts and large home development companies. Others tend to be research centers that test their products on animals. The Earth Liberation Front in the United Statesis best known for their destruction of Vail Ski Lodge in Colorado causing $12million in damage (Dejevsky, 1998). On October 18, 1998 Vail Ski Lodge had five buildings and four ski lifts reduced to ashes because Vail Inc. was given permission to expand their resort. The group also believed that the legal means they use, mass protests, civil disobedience, and education, could only do so much against those harming the Earth, especially when their country s own legal system could stop their legal actions. Members of the group believed that illegal actions were needed to help the eco resistance movement. These members argued that illegal action would aid their movement in the same way similar actions have aided the Animal Liberation Front. The group allowed those who still wanted to commit ecotage and use direct action to branch off and create their own group called the Earth Liberation Front in honor of the group they are copying, the Animal Liberation Front (Best Nocella, 2006). In recent years, the Earth Liberation Front has begun to move in a new direction. With the new research on climate change, the group believes their actions, such as bombing, arson, and other property destruction, is contributing to the rise of greenhouse gases, and is slowly killing the earth while also burdening the taxpayer with reconstruction efforts (Phillips, ... National income accounting records the level of activity in accounts such as total revenues earned by domestic corporations, wages paid to foreign and domestic workers, and the amount spent on sales and income taxes by corporations and individuals residing in the country. h. What is the difference between GNP and NI? GNP measures the market value of all final goods and services produced by a country s citizens or residents. The difference is subtle but important. GNP excludes economic activity that occurs in the U.S. but is owned by foreigners and includes American economic activity that occurs in other countries. GDP is place based whereas GNP is ownership based. So, if a foreigner creates an Internet startup in Silicon Valley, this will count as GDP, but not GNP. If General Electric opens a new plant in Poland, this investment will be included in GNP, but not GDP. i. How did NI change from 2008? In 2008, the money value of GDP expands to $4,500m but during the year, inflation is 3% causing the general index of prices to rise from a 2007 base year value of 100 to 103 in 2008. j. From a 1 year old children to grown adult men and women. At first glance, these electronics look harmless. But, if used in excess, someone can easily become addicted and not even know it. Smartphones have social media apps such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter; that s only naming a few. Continuously checking these apps will ultimately lead to addiction if not recognized and controlled. Computers have the same effect along with help from the internet; video games, Netflix, Youtube, can all entertain someone for a few hours. That time can easily be doubled, tripled and/or quadrupled, because of how entertained or bored someone can be. Immigration has a long history. However, high levels of immigration started during the period of 1946 1948. This was around the end of the second world war, when there were labour shortages in Britain and the rest of Europe. The government had to look for immigrants to fill these shortage gaps. In particular157,000 Polish citizens allowed to settle in the UK partly because of ties and connections made during the war years. The government was unable to recruit enough people from Europe to fill these labour shortages and so turned towards west India. Many men from the West Indies had fought for the mother country and had moved back to civilian life in their home country where there were few work opportunities. Their sense of patriotism, coupled with the need of work, steered them back towards the UK. On the 22nd of June 1948, the ship Windrush docked at Tilbury in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. 1601 Poor Law Essay In the 16th century the Welfare State was non existent in Britain. The result of this was the increase in people subjected to living in absolute poverty due to them not having the basic living requirements. They also had no access to services such as health care, or education as these were not free institutions. The ruling era of Queen Elizabeth I identified that the paupers required some form of help and as a result introduced the Act for the Relief of the Poor in 1601. This was the beginning of state intervention. It was a national policy set up, that was governed at local level. The purpose of the act was to prevent the poor from becoming vagrants. The conclusion on the 1601 Poor Law was that the outdoor relief which was provided by through local parishes was increasing and creating a generation of workers to endure an idleness attitude. So consequently the 1601 Act was abolished after 200 years due to the effect of the Industrial Revolution. It was then replaced with the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834 that was created to reduce expenditure on aiding the poor apart from those in exceptional circumstances. The concept of the act was to create a system based upon the workhouse. A workhouse was an institution built to provide the paupers with accommodation, clothing and food in exchange for long hours of manual labour. The families who entered the workhouse were segregated from one another, forced to oblige by strict rules and wear uniform provided. The conditions within the workhouse were deliberately inhumane and workers were treated terribly. However this was the only alternative for the poor as they had no other means of receiving finical support. About two thirds of the entire Jewish population was brutally killed. One third of all Jews persevered and survived the appalling events happening in and out of the concentration camps. One boy, out of that one third that survived and pushed through was Elie Wiesel. Elie Wiesel, the holocaustsurvivor, displays stamina in his memoir physically, mentally, and spiritually. First off, Elie Wiesel demonstrates stamina by proving his perseverance physically. In the memoir Night, the text states, I went straight to my block. Analysis Of Dalton Conley s You May Ask Yourself Dalton Conley s book, You May Ask Yourself, defines sociological imagination as, The ability to connect the most basic, intimate aspects of an individual s life to seemingly impersonal and remote historical forces (Conley 2015, pg. A 11). Sociological Imagination is the idea of being able to step outside of the box, and evaluate society from an alternative point of view. Symbolic Interactionism, norms, socialization, and the idea of understanding yourself vs. understanding the social aspect of society, are some of the key concepts mentioned throughout this paper, to help break apart what the sociological imagination consists of. Society is changing a lot, and change can sometimes make it hard to cope with the world around us. Sociological imagination is a lot deeper than just common sense. Author of The Sociological Imagination, C. Wright Mills states, Talking about sociological imagination is what makes us feel more grounded in the face of all these changes (C. Wright Mills). If I keep an open mind, and pay attention to the larger world around me, I am better to understand the connections of what is going on in my individual life, and what is going on in the social world. The sociological imagination has two lenses to it, the individual lens, and the society lens. The individual lens deals with personal troubles; Individuals comparing themselves to everyone around them. For example, with the media, we see all these commercials, and ads that portray false ... With reference to the quotation provided, along with additional extracts from the text, the angelic representation of Jane Eyrealong with the demonic demonstration of Bertha Rochester, informed by the angel demon dichotomy, is not only significant in terms of the language and imagery used to portray the female binary, but the source from which the representation is derived, particularly Mr Rochester and Jane herself. Themes concerning the challenging of patriarchal oppression for the purpose of achieving female individualism, places the absolutism of the Victorian angel demon dichotomy under threat. Cinque, an illegal slave, demands that the Spanish owners take them back to Africa. At a stop to get water, the ship was discovered by Americans. The slaves were transported to America and thrown in jail. They are trialed for murder.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I do not think the movie depicted America in the 1800 s well. I have seen an abundance of movies and pictures where the 1800 s looked more realistic than in Amistad. There were special settings that captured my attention. When Cinque was telling the translator about how he was captured, the setting in Africa was unanticipated. I was looking forward to the scene being more along the lines of jungles and wild animals, but instead it looked like a scene from Jamaica. Another scene that caught my attention were the courtroom settings. Having knowledge about the size of older buildings and rooms within those buildings, I knew things were not as spacious as they are now. The movie did a fabulous job of showing that. In the movie, everyone looked compacted into one space and it looked over capacitated. The judge s stand did not look so superior like it does now. The plaintiff and defendant stands looked like regular tables and desks. The movie did a great job replicating a slave ship. When the slaves were on the ship, their clothing, hair, and props like shackles, weapons, and chains looked realistic. It had an excellent impact to the storyline of the slaves. The clothing worn by the English men, soldiers, and Queen Isabella, were accurate regarding how they dressed in the 1800 s. The way they spoke also gave it a more realistic feel. Having English, Mende, and Spanish spoken throughout the movie made it have a special ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Friedman unquestionably agrees with in his book The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty first Century. Globalization can immediately be correlated with businesses, but such should not be the case in this circumstance. Globalization, as a matter of fact, also takes its effect on cultures worldwide. For example, thanks to globalization, western cultures are able to perceive the cultures of other countries around the world, some of which are found to be exotic. However, when this occurs, there is a certain concern that must be brought up: the issue with looking at the world from a western lens. Chandra Talpade Mohanty writes in her work Under Western Eyes: Feminist Scholarship and Colonial Discourses that the definition of colonization she wishes to invoke here is a predominantly discursive one, focusing on a certain mode of appropriation and codification of scholarship and knowledge about women in the third world by particular analytic categories employed in specific writings on the subject which take as their referent feminist interests as they have been articulated in the U.S. and Western Europe. Smith divides his essay with numerous examples and comparisons, through biological, sociological and psychological explanations. As unorthodox as it sounds, our hesitation towards outsiders can be explained in various ways we never believed imaginable; in Smith s investigation, he unveils the bewildering reality about the contrasts between ourselves, as adults, and children when it comes to immigration. He begins with a distressful story of a classroom of 4th graders from Berkeley, California, who missed their classmate named Rodrigo when he didn t return from Christmas break, due to his parents expired visa. Rodrigo s classmates thought that it was so unfair, that they complained to their congressmen. Smith then contrasts this response of empathetic children to unsympathetic adults from Berkeley, California, who protested against immigrants who seek shelter in the U.S for the families. Smith pondered the questions: Why do immigrants provoke such strong feelings of both empathy and revulsion, a polarization that pits fourth graders in Berkeley against the citizens of Murrieta? and What characteristics and qualities do Rodrigo s classmates possess... In Harmon s (1991) article, he details a scene where Sir Winston Churchill is sitting around the strategy table, debating the benefits of area bombing. Area bombing is a tactic where an area is indiscriminately bombed, regardless of military objective. During the meeting Winston stood up and proclaimed, Are we beasts, are we taking this too far (Harmon, 1991, p. 3). LM03, Ethical Leadership, discusses Dr. Toner s three P s, which are principle, purpose, and people (DAF, 2014c, p. 7). To me, Winston Churchill put the three P s in the correct order when he decided to commence area bombings. He put the principle of freedom and justice before the purpose of winning the war and finally, he put the people in their proper place of third. Had he not made this decision, who knows how many more would have died. The air raids killed innocent women and children, but many others today enjoy freedom and liberty because of this decision. The war continued and as the German people became war weary, ended in 1945 due, in part, to Churchill s proper use of the three P s. Making a decision like this takes guts, resolve, and most importantly an ability to see the second and third order effects. Winston Churchill would not have made the decision to area bomb had he not known that its effect on the German people would cause them to lose their will to fight, therefore limiting the endless supply of troops Hitler seemed to be able to acquire. This, to me, is why Course 14 intertwined the critical thinking and ethical leadership modules. On Facione s scoring rubric from CF03, Critical Thinking, I would definitely have given Winston s decision to use area bombing a 4 out of 4 (DAF, 2014b, p. 24). • 45. Compare And Contrast Sixteen Candles And Ferris Bueller s... 1.After viewing both Sixteen Candles and Ferris Bueller s Day Off I would have to choose Sixteen Candles to be my favorite of the two. My reasoning is because I feel the storyline and characters were developed better, allowing the audience to feel a greater connection with the film. When comparing the two films, Sixteen Candles comes across as more angst driven, with a strong female lead. Ferris Bueller s Day Off has an obvious strong male lead character, with more humor obvious throughout the film. The overall tone of Sixteen Candles is less upbeat than Ferris Bueller. As the main character Samantha is struggling throughout the film with the acceptance of her family forgetting her birthday, Ferris Bueller has no care in the world and refuses to be defeated. The relationships in Ferris Bueller s Day Off are mainly friend to friend and student to authority. Sixteen Candles depicts a more romantic aspect, with a love story being the main focus throughout. 2.Out of both of these films the one I find that strays mostly from John Hughes other teenage films in Ferris Bueller s Day Off. Sixteen Candles, I found to be fitting with the other films because it has a strong female lead, teen angst, and a major love story component. For example, Samantha and Jake at the end of the film kissing in the candle light. A dramatic end scene kiss has been depicted in Pretty in Pink as well. Ferris Bueller s Day Off on the other hand, is something unlike any other John Hughes film. It is witty, and fast paced, not focusing on teen angst or romance in any aspect. There are no love triangles, or finding out whether two main characters will end up together. It takes another point of view from teenagers about being young and enjoying life before it catches up with you. Ferris Bueller s Day Off also a strong theme of relationships with authority figures, which we only see in the other John Hughes film, The Breakfast Club. An example of this in the film is between Ferris and Mr. Rooney. There is constant conflict between them, one example is when Ferris has Cameron prank call Mr. Rooney s office. • 48. A Multi Disciplinary Team Introduction In 2011 there have been 49,900 women and 350 men that have been diagnosed with breast cancer within the United Kingdom (Cancer Research UK 2014). Individuals who are undergoing investigation for suspected breast disease can be referred for breast care services with symptoms or are recalled from the breast screening programme. The National Health Service Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) was introduced in 1988 which was due to the proposition of the Forrest Report that had been published two years prior (1986). This essay will attempt to discuss the theoretical principals of population screening as well as the importance of diagnostic breast care services, with the influence of a multi disciplinary team. Theoretical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The age range 50 69 is where mortality rate reduction was seen at its greatest. The main evidence used in favour for breast screening and Forrest report came from the studies and randomised control trials conducted in Sweden. On the contrary Gotsche Olsen (2000) disputed the findings of the Swedish randomised trials, claiming screening for breast cancer is unjustifiable, as there is inconsistency within the randomisation of the trial, as two of these trials found no effect of screening on mortality. A meta analysis was conducted by Gotsche Olsen on the Swedish Trials results. This meta analysis found that for every 1000 women screened biennially throughout 12 years one breast cancer death is avoided, whereas the total number of deaths is increased by six . Other studies that were conducted in New York, Canada and Edinburgh had also been criticised on the methods of randomisation and validity. The Forrest report stated that there must be a clinical examiner, radiologist and a pathologist within a multidisciplinary team to ensure that there is expert knowledge available in each health profession. Breast Services should all have breast surgeons, nurses, radiographers, pathologists, radiologists, oncologists, breast care services manager and clerical staff, this is what is recommended by the NICE 2002 for the successful running of the unit. The use of mammography is the first line of diagnostic investigation for women in the NHSBSP, Forrest ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Cinematic Thought Experiments Of The Living Dead Cinematic Thought Experiments of the Living Dead Philosophical conceptions of consciousness represented through the zombie film The zombies that George R. Romero showcases in Night of the Living Dead (1968) now dominate the film industry as the prototype for the undead: the mindless corpse that is void of its prior consciousness. And the preferred food source of the undead has become like law for any pop culture universe about zombies even undead superheroes will eat people in the comic books from the Marvel Zombies series. As the prototypical zombie thought experiment, the Night of the Living Dead allows the audience to confidently respond to any questions about the undead s identity, actions, or morality by referring to that void of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Romero s Mindless Undead I initiate the discourse on the purpose of consciousness by first introducing Night of the Living Dead, as an effort to reveal an intuitive claim as a running theme of the movie: consciousness is what distinguishes me from the living dead. Romero s Night of the Living Dead can teach us about what our assumptions on the purpose of higher consciousness by having it be the root feature that distinguishes the living from the undead. When Johnny dies and his corpse comes back from the local cemetery, the consciousness of his mind is left behind there remains only emptiness inside the zombie. As his consciousness vanishes, so does the person that we used call Johnny the corpse itself is now just a mindless shell. The Romero zombie comes back as completely subject to the zombie law of nature; leaving behind the mind, all that they can do is what a zombie does and all zombies devour. The absolute mindlessness that characterizes the zombies in Romero s creation, reflects on the idea, that, a free acting human being can be reduced to nothing more than a mindless corpse by stripping away their consciousness. Also apparent in the Night of the Living Dead, is the assumption, that, it is from consciousness that I claim to have an identity, to act on reasons and to rise above my innate instincts all of which are concepts ... Irony, diction, and syntax are clearly evident in this dramatic monologue. Throughout the poem the nameless monk is constantly expressing his anger and sarcasm through the use of syntactical irony. This particular monkis angered at a fellow monk, as evidenced by quot;If hate killed men, Brother Lawrence, God s blood, would not mine kill you! quot; which seems ironic knowing he is a religious monk. As a monk, he plays the total opposite of an actual monk. He puts down the innocent Brother Lawrence, when he himself is the rotten one. Browning expresses certain words with diction. A monk does not watch girls wash their clothes and hair at the bank. Steeping tresses in the tank, Blue black, lustrous, think like horsehairs, the selfish monk does this, not the innocent Brother Lawrence. As a monk, one should not look upon women showering themselves and washing clothes. Being the opposite of a monk he also owns a dirty book, My Scrofulous French novel...If I double down its pages at the woeful sixteenth print, he also knows exact pages of the book to look at. Towards the end of the poem the monk plans to rid himself of his fellow Brother, by sending him to Hell. He speaks of slipping his French novel revealing quot;Belial s gripe, quot; Belial being one of the classical devils of Hell, the Lord of Lies. One may determine that the monk intends to present a false message to his Brother in order to damn his soul. It is clear that he is not following his title as a monk; he is a traitor to his own name. Throughout Browning s Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister , he exposes different devices used. Irony, diction, and syntax all play a major role in each stanza. By ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
