Why The Mass Extinction Of Dinosaurs
65 million years ago, dinosaurs ruled the planet. These fascinating animals were the largest,
strongest creatures to ever walk the face of the earth, yet, they met a fate that would change the
world forever. All that is left are the fossilized remains of these captivating creatures. Their fossils,
along with the layers of our Earths rock and sediment, tell a story of how they lived and how they
died. However, there is still an ongoing debate in the world of science of exactly what catastrophe
caused these magnificent animals to take their last breathes and never reappear again. Was it a
gigantic meteor or asteroid of some type or was it mass volcanos erupting all over the Earth?
Whatever the reason, the dinosaurs disappeared from this... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In fact, who s to say that both of these events didn t contribute to this mass extinction? Regardless
of what caused the disappearance of the dinosaurs, the mass extinction at the end of the

The Effect Of Weight Lifting And Its Effects On Basketball...
Weight Lifting and Its Effects on Basketball Players
Ten people gather around a center point waiting as two giants square off between one another,
clashing for the most valuable prize of the battle ahead: the basketball. A game of strategy and high
demands, basketball calls on both the body and the mind in harmony in order to secure a victory. It
calls on your body in many ways that will strip you of energy unlike any other sport. Additionally,
the game will demand a high intelligence and acumen from the mind when making split second
decisions. Lifting weights can positively impact your body, physically and mentally; furthermore,
this training can then be applied onto the basketball court to help increase the physical and mental
attributes of a player. Being well equipped physically for basketball provides many advantages
when you apply it correctly. Basketball is a unique sport that contains non stop movement in
every moment. The objective is simple: score more points than the other team. This is
accomplished by a constant burst of speed, agility, and quickness that combines for fluid
motions up and down the court. If a player is not trained properly, this consistent activity can be
extremely strenuous to their body. Plus, in a game of basketball the gameplay is live until the
ball goes out of bounds, there is a foul, timeout called, or the end of a quarter. While this may
seem like quite a few factors to allow a dead ball and some rest time, they do not occur as much

The Use of Symbolism in Golding s Lord of the Flies Essay
The Use of Symbolism in Golding s Lord of the Flies
His head opened and stuff came out and turned red. Piggy s arms and legs twitched a bit like a pig
after it has been killed (217). This is what can happen to someone when all signs of civilization,
order and power disappear and have no more meaning to members of a group or society. In the
writing of William Golding s Lord of the Flies (1954), the symbol of power and civilization is the
conch. Once that is lost, all bets are off. When the novel begins, two boys are talking about what
has happened and why they are on this island. While walking on the beach, the main character
Ralph then proceeds to find a shell which the two boys call the conch. Blowing on this shell Ralph

In the very beginning the conch is used to bring all of the boys in the story together. Ralph blows
it and they come. This is the first sign of its power. The boys have been lost and now there is this
thing, much like a school bell, calling them to be brought together. It has brought order to this
strange place in which they are stranded.
During these boys escapade, when one wants to speak in front of the assembly, one must have the
conch in his hand. We ll have to have hands up like at school...Then I ll give him the conch (35).
They are setting up rules just as they had learned in their civilization. They are also making the
conch the only way one can talk at meetings.
All throughout this novel the boys are called to meetings to discuss the rules, the fire, and many
other assorted things. One of these things is a beast that comes in the night but does not leave
foot prints or any trail at any time. All the boys are very afraid of this beast and what it may do
to them if it gets hold of them. As it turns out the beast is in the boys: You knew, didn t you? I m
part of you? (172). This is the lord of the flies, also known as the beast, talking to Simon the first
boy murdered. The beast is their unwillingness to maintain a civilization; it is their transformation
into savages. All the time at all these meetings the boys respect the conch and whoever held the
conch was respected, even if he was not liked. Once this symbol of

Pros And Cons Of Brian Mulroney
Martin Brian Mulroney was the 18th Prime Minister of Canada and indeed a leader full of great
qualities (Sawatsky 7). Born in a small town in Quebec, Mulroney was a bilingual Anglophone who
harbored a tremendous political ambition (22). He belonged to the Progressive Conservative party
and came to power in 1984 (Parker 22). Mulroney significantly affected the Canadian history
through his socio political, environmental and economic reforms. He had a powerful, tremendous
and symbolic impact on Canadian history, socio politically by passing the Indian Act, the
Multiculturalism Act and introducing Meech Lake and Charlottetown Accords., environmentally
by signing Air Quality Agreement, the Montreal Protocol and cancelling the National Energy
Program... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First of all, the introduction of Goods and Services Tax by Mulroney built the foundation for
eliminating federal deficit, which occurs when the government spends more money than it makes
(Parker 22). Deficit increased the selling off of the capital assets in Canada to finance the purchases
of slowly diminishing goods and services, which undermined future production and raised
unemployment rates and inflation (Swatsky 309). Not only did the introduction of GST
overcame deficit by a significant amount, it also proved to be an important source of generating
revenues, improving the competitive position of Canada s economy in the world and acting as
an efficient way for managing the country (Good and Bad sides of GST). This could be justified
though the fact that when Mulroney introduced the GST, the revenues grew by one third, and
GDP by 1.2%. Although it was not enough to stop deficit at first, it did slow it down and
eventually hauled it (Coyne). But at the same time, his attempt to stop deficit limited his ability
to deliver the promises he made in terms of services and infrastructures.(Info base Learning).
Secondly, the signing off the Free Trade Agreement with United States and North American
Free Trade Agreement with the addition of Mexico came as a great economic contribution to
Canadian history as it marked the creation of the largest free trade region in the world. With the
elimination of tariff and non tariff barriers, NAFTA opened gates for Canada towards economic
prosperity and growth. With no imposed taxes, NAFTA provided Canada access to the wider
range of Mexican and U.S markets, expanding Canada s productivity and allowed Canada to
attract more U.S investors, firms and companies to Canada, to invest in the wide variety of natural
resources, and. This also led to a huge burst in job opportunities in the trade and service sectors

Meher Baba Silence Essay
Having seen Meher Baba s observations and reasons for his silence through his own words, now
one can see some interesting observations made by individuals who were close to Meher Baba in
the Interpretations of Meher Baba Silence Eruch recalls that very often people used to ask about
Meher Baba s long silence. Most frequented question was when He intended to break it. As if
answering to this question, one day in 1954 in answer, He just stopped using His alphabet board
and started to communicate by using finger gestures. One day He asked this question: Why do
people shout at one another when they are angry even when the person is sitting beside? When no

In silence one can get clarity about one s visions and wishes, one s patterns of thinking and
feeling and how one acts in one s world. Silence can be a tool which helps one know and
experience fully who am I and what one s purpose in life is. In the modern world there is hardly
ever complete silence. People also avoid silence and even seem to be afraid of it. There is
always some background noise, whether that is traffic, music or a TV. It is difficult for some of
us to be in silence because it so clearly brings us face to face with our own identity. This becomes
awkward because so often one plays a role and is embarrassed or ashamed to face the real one.
One is not in peace with oneself so one tries to keep the mind busy with different kinds of input
so that one does not have to think of who am I . Speech is the biggest consumer of one s energy,
the easiest way of dissipating one energy. When talking one uses a lot more oxygen than when
one is in silence. Excessive talking causes energy burnout and mind gets overheated which then in
turn has effects on one s reactions. One becomes angry and impatient due to which one is not able
to act calmly, coolly or rationally anymore. Also listening to people who talk a lot takes a lot of

The Big Fish Film Analysis
The Big Fish is a 2003 fantasy/ comedy drama directed by the director of popular movies such as
The Nightmare Before Christmas, Tim Burton. The Big Fish takes us into the life of Edward
Bloom (Ewan McGregor and Albert Finney), and the feud he holds with his son Will Bloom
(Billy Crudup). Will s feud with his dad stems from his dad s overexagerated stories and gaps
between fantasy and reality. Will goes with his wife, Sandra Bloom (Alison Lohman), to find out
once and for all the truth about his father s life. During the narration of Edward s life, the movie
slips into a fantasy world where we witness the abnormal and the exdrodanary, and sit on the edge
of our seats as we anticipate the ending of the phenomenal fairy tale. The fist main element

Introducing Systems Theory, Marriage And Family Therapists
Introducing Systems Theory
Marriage and Family Therapists (MFT) in training are tasked with helping a family work through
conflict and arrive and more intimate and interdependent relationships, which can seem daunting or
maybe even terrifying. However, the interaction patterns that show up in families can find some
context and clarity for a therapist who knows systems theory. Systems theory suggests that
individuals cannot be understood in isolation from their family context because families create
relational processes and generate a sequence of interactions and behaviors in order to maintain
dynamic stability of the self regulating family system (Nichols, 2013, pp. 58 59). How does this
general systems theory help an MFT guide a family in therapy? In this paper I will take three
systems theory principles and apply them to a movie in order to demonstrate how it provides a
language and context for MFTs, thus making it an essential tool in family therapy.
I will begin with a brief synopsis of Demme s movie, Rachel Getting Married (2008), and its
primary family characters. Next I will discuss three key principles of systems theory and use the
movie characters interactions as examples for each corresponding principle. In the conclusion I will
share my learning experience in doing this assignment.

Starting At A New School
Starting at a New School
The first day of school can be terrifying for some students. However, there are some important and
helpful tips that can help start your journey on the right track, such as how to handle with those
who are racist, how to face people who do the bullying, how to make friends in the classroom and
extracurricular activities, and how to handle outside influences that impact on students learning.
Starting at a new school can be challenging for some new students.
New students may experience racism at a new school. As cited from the American Heritage
College Dictionary1, racism has two definitions. The first is the belief that race accounts for
differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others. Second is
discrimination or prejudice based on race. Arnold Spirit, Jr. grew up on the Spokane Indian
Reservation located just west of Spokane, Washington. As a young teenager, he knew that it would
be a challenge for him, being the only Native American student besides the team mascot attending
an all white school but Arnold went ahead anyway. Arnold thought that learning from the white
kids would benefit him so he determined to leave the reservation to go to Reardan, in order to get a
better education. According to Desmond Tutu, If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have
chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse, and you say that
you are neutral, the mouse will

ABSTRACT
Petroleum based fuels are producing high emissions in depletion of environment. Due to the usage
with modern globalization these emissions causing hazardous for the environment.
Due to the local topography and climatology, Bio fuels can be produced from various sources.
Likewise every nation will have its own source. Kanuga oil is abundantly available in india but it
s not been used and if used it s a great resource of energy. This study explores the potential alternate
for diesel as fuel for automobiles and other industrial purposes. This study is focused on kanuga
methyl esters performance and emission characteristics and comparing it with the traditional
petroleum diesel. The fuels are used pure methyl ester and different blends of the methyl ester with
diesel.
The tests were conducted on a 3.7 KW, single cylinder, direct injection, water cooled diesel engine.
The experimental result shows that every blend performs good with decreased amount of pollution.
This analysis shows that kanuga methyl ester and its blends are a potential alternate for diesel.

The Playing Days Of Lou Gehrig
The Playing Days of Lou Gehrig
Baseball is a poor man s sport, easy to play and addicting to watch. During the days of Lou
Gehrig, whenever there was a baseball game, people usually forgot their worries that day and
went to watch their heroes play. 1n 1917, the Americans declared war on Germany. Even in
America s ballparks, German immigrants sought to distance themselves from their native land
(Eig, 19). In a world of insecurity caused by the jeopardy of war and an ongoing economic
depression, Lou Gehrig signified a show of pride and confidence until Amyotrophic Lateral
Sclerosis put an abrupt end to his playing days. When it comes to baseball, there have been a few
high caliber players who become American icons. Lou Gehrig became that icon of the era in which
he thrived. While he spent much of his career in the shadow of his mentor and teammate Babe Ruth,
Lou Gehrig would eventually emerge from Ruth s shadow and represent the values of the 1930
s. During Lou Gehrig s era baseball served as a distraction from the adversity of the world war
and the depression. In the 1920s, America ended World War I with a bodacious force not to be
ignored with. The Roaring Twenties, was an era when America accomplished immense economic
development. The stock market soared as the citizens of the United States hastily purchased goods
on credit. As a result of the admirable twentieth century, hours were lower and wages were higher.

Supply Chain Management And Logistics Essay
Supply Chain management and logistics are an extremely important functions of an organization.
In this research paper, we will be discussing an aspect of supply chain and logistics that I am
interested in, how both are related and different, key activities in supply chain and logistics, and the
ethics and social responsibility in both supply chain and logisticsmanagement.
Logistics is a vital component of supply chain management. Both involve the planning, carrying out
and management of goods, services and information from the point of origin to the point of
consumption. Logistics aligns the multifaceted pattern of traffic and transportation, shipping and
receiving, import and export operations, warehousing, inventory management, purchasing,
production planning and customer service. Organizations, like the one I work for, see logistics as a
critical design of the supply chain. When organizations incorporate logistics as a key component of
the business plan, they can use it to manage, coordinate and monitor resources needed to move
products in a smooth, timely, cost effective and reliable manner.
Like Logistics, Supply Chain Management is an essential element of operational efficiency. The
impact that supply chain has on our organization is substantial and exponential. Two of the main
ways SCM affects business include: boosts customer service and our overall bottom line. Supply
chain impacts our customer service by making sure the right product assortment and quantity are

Surface Area to Volume Ratio and the Relation to the Rate of Diffusion
Aim and Background
This is an experiment to examine how the Surface Area / Volume Ratio affects the rate of diffusion
and how this relates to the size and shape of living organisms.
The surface area to volume ratio in living organisms is very important. Nutrients and oxygen need
to diffuse through the cell membrane and into the cells. Most cells are no longer than 1mm in
diameter because small cells enable nutrients and oxygen to diffuse into the cell quickly and allow
waste to diffuse out of the cell quickly. If the cells were any bigger than this then it would take too
long for the nutrients and oxygen to diffuse into the cell so the cell would probably not ... Show

Changes During The Agricultural Community Essay
Due to changes in the agricultural community there was in early nineteenth century East Anglia a
significant situation of underemployment within the agricultural labourers community. At this time
it was also being recognised that there was an ever increasing growth in population; for instance:
several landowners and journalists attributed the problems of rural society to the size of the
labourers families and to their tendency to marry at an early age. It has been suggested that the
average size of the agricultural labourers household was 4.9. This population rise in turn put
pressure on the supply of housing, resulting in many agricultural labouring families living in small,
squalid and overcrowded cottages, many consisting of just one room, with no ceiling, just the bare
roof tiles and a clay floor. The building itself would have been constructed from unbound stone or
wattle and mud. It can be suggested that: The vegetable substances mixed with the mud to make it
bind, rapidly decompose, leaving the walls porous. The earth of the floor is full of vegetable matter
[...] it is peculiarly liable to damp. It can be suggested therefore that the growth of population,
coupled with the deterioration of living standards within agricultural communities of East Anglia
contributed towards the pauperisation of the agricultural labourers and their families. The
aforementioned growth of population within the agricultural communities of East Anglia led to an
ever increasing

Amateurism In College Football
Amateurism
Being a college football player, I am very well aware of the issue of to pay players or not to pay.
Obviously my situation is different, being a student here at the Naval academy, but the issue still
very much affects me. The reason players deserve compensation are painfully obvious. One,
Football is a very dangerous sport. Two, the full ride scholarships players are offered aren t exactly
what they appear to be. Three, colleges can easily afford it or enable it.
Football is dangerous , these are words heard all the time, and it s been an accepted fact for a
while now. Obviously while playing football you understand there s a risk of being injured you are
facing. People get hurt all the time, but these injuries usually do not have lasting effects.
Traditionally they re bruises, cuts, scrapes, and sprains, but there s also always the minute danger of

especially in Texas, and my love for it began then, and from that point forward the dream was

TKI Reflective Essay
The TKI Assessment allowed me to gain an honest understand of what my negotiation tendencies
are between competing, collaborating, compromising, avoiding, and accommodating. No single
style is the best to have or necessarily the right answer, but the assessment does help you understand
your true tendencies for dealing with a conflict. Knowing where you rank on this assessment is
important for knowing where your deficiencies and your strengths. This coincides with chapter five
in learningwhat type of negotiation style you use, when, and how you can improve your negotiation
tactics arsenal. The main lesson that I have learned from these activities is that relying too heavily
on one negotiation style is not appropriate because the same styles... Show more content on

This is always a skill that I thought I could pride myself on, especially in the workplace, so
seeing the low score was a little tough for me once I completed the assessment. I was reluctant to
admit that I am not as apt to collaborate when I should as I thought I was. Upon reflection, I
realized that I may not necessarily be bad at collaboration but I may not realize when I should be
using the skill. I have always preferred to work alone, and I ve always known that about myself.
I tend to believe that this is a more efficient way to work most of the time, so when I take that
into consideration it makes more sense that my collaboration score would be lower. I may not
have considered my preference for working alone as a hindrance to my ability to collaborate
when I should if I had not taken this assessment. I now know, especially in a work setting, that I
need to be more willing to take on teamwork and seek the input of others on projects that I am
working on. Doing so will allow me to learn more skills from the different points of view I will be

George T-Shirts Essay
Question 1: What are the possible financial outcomes if George orders 5,000 shirts, 7,500 shirts
and 10,000 shirts, respectively?
Based on the information given in the case, the expected number of attendees is:
E(x) = 80,000*0.25 + 50,000*0.5 + 20,000*0.25 = 50,000 people
Selling price per shirt: $100/12 = $8.33
Discount price: $1.5
Scenario 1:
Assumption: George orders 5000 T shirts; cost: $17,750; the number of attendees buy his T shirts
are 5%, 10% and 15% respectively
The possible financial outcomes under scenario 1 are as follows:
Scenario 2:
Assumption: George orders 7,500 T shirts; cost = $25,250; the number of attendees buy his T
shirts are 5%, 10% and 15% respectively

How much is perfect information worth to him?
George would use the information to maximize his profit. In question 1, George did not have
perfect information about the future, therefore his best bet was to take the conservative route
based on assumptions, and estimations. For instance, the profit he made based on the assumption
in scenario 1 (50,000 people would come, 10% will buy his T shirt) is $23,900. If he had perfect
information, say he knew that the number of attendees would be 80,000 and 10% of them would
buy a shirt from him, he would place an order of exactly 8000 T shirts.
Assumption: He pays $5 for one extra T shirt in excess of 7,500 pcs. * Cost = $25,250 + 500*$5 =
$27,750 * Revenue = 8,000*8.33 = $66,640 * Profit = $66,640 $27,750 = $38,890
Perfect information is worth: $38,890 $23,917 = $14,973
Question 4: Assume George makes T shirts for 30 events per year:
Should George quit his day job and become a T shirt entrepreneur full time?
I will need the following information to address this question. 1) How much is his income at his
current job? 2) Is the income from making T shirts more or less substantial than his current job?
3) Based on the question he potentially has an event every 12 days. How big are these events? Are
they all as lucrative as the current event? 4) What is the competitive landscape? Is he the only
special events T shirt maker? If not, how competitive is it? 5) Are there any potential changes

Charlemagne And The Educational Contributions In The Dark...
Many had a bad viewpoint of the Dark ages, which is stated in the Cultures and Values book as:
The popular view of the Middle ages often referred to as the Dark Ages is that of a period of
isolated and ignorant people with little outside of their own immediate surroundings (P. 187). But
through research of the Dark agesI have come to realize that the time wasn t as bad as many
people made it out to be. There were many greats to make the Middle agesgreat; such as,
Charlemagne. Also there were numerous architectural works that were very beautiful and
magnificent. Lastly there is evidence from the epic poem Beowulfthat tells a great story that was
created in the Middle ages. In these times it may have not been the most iconic for the area, but it
definitely doesn t deserve the title of the Dark ages. Charlemagne is seen as one of the greatest
Roman Emperors throughout history and has numerous accolades to show for it. But for this essay
I am only going to speak about his work on the educational advances during his reign as emperor.
Stated by Cunningham and Reich, Charlemagne opened his famous palace school at Aachen an
institution that was a prime factor in initiating what has been called the Carolingian Renaissance (p.
278). In his school he brought in numerous teachers and scholars for several different reasons.
Charlemagne wanted to make sure that the youth of the kingdom were well educated, and his main
reason for this was due to the fact that he himself could not

Sushi And Hibachi, Roseville, Minnesota
Osaka Sushi and Hibachi, Roseville, Minnesota, 5PM. Feeling a bit nauseous, nervous, walking
up to the entrance of the restaurant, mother and grandmother a few steps in front of me. Today
was the day, I waited three months for, the day in which I get to try Japanese cuisine. What
should be expected? What if it tastes less than desirable? Will my etiquette be correct? I prepared
and researched several hours in advance regarding this. Once inside the restaurant, following
closely, the three of us were seated at an interesting table; like none of other restaurants in the area.
A large, open, flat topped stove stands in the center, behind it, a chef stands, smiling as we sit down
and open the thick menu of food items. Scanning the chef, noting his tall white hat, his crisply clean
white apron, black uniform, posture, it s not difficult to tell that he had been an employee for a
significant amount of time.
Flipping through the menu, it was apparent the variety of sushi, sashimi and nigiri was
overwhelming. Luckily enough, my mother and grandmother came into this with a plan. Initially
we ordered our drinks, personally I ordered a Japanese soda, and when it was brought to the table
I was surprised by the appearance of the bottle alone. A rather curved glass overall, the bottom
portion was similar to that of other bottles of soda made from glass, but your eye drew upward.

Why Is It Important To Recognize And Value An Individual...
Explain why it is important to recognize and value an individual as a person It is important
because each person deserves respect and each person has their own individual needs. Not every
person is the same, and treating a person in the exact same way as everyone else may not be the
best way to help show that persons individuality. If you do not recognise and value an individual
as a person, you run the risk of devaluing them, and once you ve done that you also run the risk of
them of becoming withdrawn, lacking confidence and upset 1.2 Describe the importance of
recognising and individuals strengths and abilities Helps to recognise what methods or ways
are best suited to help that person. And where further help is needed to help teach or to use their
strengths and abilities in which will help benefit them. Helping recognise strengths and abilities
also helps build confidence in that person and may encourage to build on their strengths and to
try to gain or strengthen new abilities. Strengths also help compensate for a person s
weaknesses, this helps show where development may be needed and how they can use existing
strengths to help improve where they are weakest. 1.3 Describe how to work in a person centered
way that fully involves the individual Making sure everything you do is evolved around that
person so the work you do suits their specific needs ensuring the best care possible. Finding out

The Discovery Of Oil And Its Impact On The Environment
The discovery of oil has led to an abundance of new opportunities that have helped people create

impact of oil derived, in large part, from its attractiveness as an energy dense, easily deliverable
source of fuel for transportation. Oil is sometimes coined the term black gold because of its value.
Corporations like Chevron have made billions of dollars in the oil industry. With the rise of oil, the
destruction of the environmenthas also become a serious issue in some parts of the world. Oil
spills that have taken place in the gulf and in the forests have had a huge impact on both the
people and wildlife that have lived around these affected areas. Black streaks of oil are seen in
the sand in some beaches still to this day and. But these are just some of the major environmental
disasters oil companies like Chevron are responsible for. Chevron has also made an impact on the
environment around its refineries, and it is not a positive impact. The waste that comes out of these
refineries is dumped into the ocean, rivers, and these toxic wastesites severely hurt the environment
in the process. One of the biggest issue the company faces, is with the country of Ecuador where a
lawsuit was filed against Texaco, which was acquired by Chevron in 2001. The corporation was

On admission to hospital a nurse would implement a care plan to help Mr Williams through his

approach can be defined as a person centered. This was first developed by Dr Carl Rogers

pushed towards the individual to seek out and fulfil their own personal potential whilst the
therapist would create an environment where a person would psychologically and physically feel
free from any threat, this would ultimately be achieved by a positive, genuine and empathetic
setting created by the therapist. These ideas have since been transferred to many roles where

Analysis Of Frank And Juliette s Music

practices and understandings or simply a way of experiencing spirituality in secular spheres.
Frank:... listen to songs where I ve felt emotions and feelings that run past the specific context of
the song ... this applies to more of my life than it should... a lot of people have had that with music...
Ideas of transcendence and deep personal connection are apparent here.
Juliette: Concert, not a gig ... a concert where you ve been a fan for ages. There s all these people,
you re all in the same vibe... this person that you like, idolised. . . Florence and The Machine, her
music is very spiritual... it s really deep...and relatable. . . . I don t know if I d call myself spiritual

. . . I guess [I listen to music] pretty much every day . . . If you compare it to religion, is like praying
every day and then going to Church. So like, listening to music every day and then going to the
concert.
Initiation into a subculture, reflects initiation into religious rituals, thus, similar themes of
spirituality emerge. Participants can accept or reject concepts of spirituality upon attending a

Fortune In Dante s Inferno
The concept of fortune, as developed in the poem Inferno, is that fortune is seen as a goddess
who is malicious in that she is able to alter a person s circumstance for better or for worse.
According to the poem, good fortune is the one that is adverse and has the ability to teach lessons
effectively. Dante s attitude towards wealth makes him have strong original ideas about how
fortune collates with human affairs. Fortune is a force that is very powerful in both philosophies as
well as literature. Ignoring one s status on earth and trusting in a being is considered certain

In Canto IIV, Plutus, a raging god of wealth blocks Dante from entering the fourth circle. With the
intervention of Virgil, they are able to pass through. In the circle, Virgil explains to Dante that the
one with the ability to rule who is to be rich and who is to be poor is only fortune. Human beings
are portrayed as people who waste their lives while fighting for wealth and they end blaming
fortune instead of glorifying her (Jaffe, Valerie and Selens 14). It seems that fortune is not
bothered by criticisms from the humans, but instead she enjoys doing what she does best. Dante
has borrowed several characters to be able to explain the role of fortune in Canto IIV. Such
include hoarders who he describes as people who accumulate wealth for themselves. Poetically, he
describes them as people with no hairs covering their heads. In religion, these people are the
cardinals and the pope. He also describes the wasters as those people who spend or misuse all the
wealth that they have. Poetically, he describes them as those who have risen from the tombs with
their hairs cut short.
Fate can largely affect the conscious mind. Some fates can be unpleasurable and very painful for
the human mind to comprehend. Human beings reactions are different in this case and often some
end up living their lives and doing things unconsciously. Others will repress those bad memories
by trying to live in the unconscious world. The outcome of this repression is often very different
and according to Freud, the cause of repression is always connected to the conscious mind (Freud

Sellar s Myth of the Given
Many empiricists claim that there is a sort of knowledge that is directed towards our
consciousness and this knowledge is assumed to be the given. The given which is held in all of
us has access that is highly privileged and presupposes no learning and no prior form of
associations. It provides the foundation and first layer for empirical knowledge. The knowledge
that is gained through experience and pure reason. Empirical knowledge comes from observation. I
will argue in favor of Sellars rejection of the Given; that the Myth of the Given is truly untenable.
Wilfrid Sellars labeled the existence of such knowledge as the Myth of the Given. When calling
something a myth then that would mean that it does not exist at all. Sellars rejected all the
arguments that were in favor that were put forward in supporting the existence of the given and
claims that empirical knowledge, which has been dictated as rational and has no need for the
given. His position in disregarding the given has been constituted as the main focus of the
philosopher s career. Let s delve straight into why Sellars decided to dismiss the given.
Sellars rejected the idea that knowledge is given. The Myth of the Given plays on the notion that
knowledge is either basic or given . Here is an example: If you do not possess the concept of
something being blue then you cannot speak of. The true judgement that contains the term blue has

The General Analysis Of Invertebrate Richness And...
DISCUSSION
The general analysis of invertebrate richness and diversity prove that shallow leaf litter is more
biodiverse than deep leaf litter. From graph 2, shallow leaf litter is proven to be more biodiverse
where the spread of invertebrate richness is higher with a relatively low rate of error denoted by
the low standard deviation. Similarly, figure 6 also shows a similar trend where the mean of
shallow leaf litter diversity was greater than deep leaf litter. The mean results of invertebrate
abundance also show shallow leaf litter to be more abundant, however this is affected by the
extreme outlier seen in figure 2, where there is a large leeway for error due to the high standard
deviation. This may be due to human error due to transcription, an error in counting the amount of
species or the designated shallow leaf litter contained species that were extremely common,
providing a large abundance value. However, figure 1 and the comparison of boxplots in graph 1,
show the overall values of deep leaf litter are centred higher, indicating that deep leaf litter has
greater abundance, excluding outliers.
Similarly, the analysis of richness and diversity indicate that deep light traps are more biodiverse
than shallow light traps and are quite trustworthy as shown by the low standard deviations.
According to figure 6, the mean of both habitats were very similar but deep light traps had a
slightly higher mean. Abundance of deep light traps also proves to be greater if we

What Is Racial Fetishism
From as early as the 1760 s, prostitution has been referred to by different names. French
philosophers used the word fetichisme, which loosely translated to mean primitive religion. Later,
according to Anne McClintock, Marx, in 1887, used the term commodity fetish which was believed
to mean primitive magic to express the idea of an economic side to the fetish, thus claiming it to be
an industry. McClintock goes on to explain that Freud evolved fetishismin to sexuality and finally
into what is known as erotic perversions. Later, religion combined the term sexuality and money,
therefore removing the primitive idea, making prostitutiona racial and sexual degeneration

Madame Bovary Characteristics
Flaubert s Madame Bovary concludes with Monsieur Homais ecstatic because of his triumph in
receiving the medal of the Legion of Honor. Homais, the town pharmacist in Yonville, spends most
of his time adulating people in authority and attempting to publicize his good deeds to reach his
success at the end novel. Moreover, Homais s immoral and self serving actions clearly display that
he is certainly the last character in Madame Bovarythat deserves to be encompassed in glory when
the story has finished. Although it originally seems that Homais is an insignificant character who
will chatter incessantly to anyone with social status, he ends up serving as one of the chief players
who unfolds Flaubert s themes. Flaubert, through her description of the apothecary, characterizes
the age of modernity to be synonymous with the new bourgeoisie class that has emerged in France.
The faith in scientific or technological development, the increasing secularism of the era, and the
prioritization of the individual were all themes of the time period. Flaubert uses the town
pharmacist to portray the issues she noticed in 19th century France. Homais arises as an ironic
depiction of the modern man through his interaction with Hippolyte and the beggar, his attempts to
promote his status through self interested endeavors and flattering those with power, and his

The Role Of Prayer In Public Schools
Throughout the United States, the religious rights of students are frequently being pushed to the
side. The majority of the religious rights being threatened belong to non believers. Conservatives
often argue that it is a student s and teacher s right to pray in public schools, trying to persuade the
American public that they are truly concerned about the rights of the students. However, in all
reality, they truly do not care about the religious rights, but instead they care about power. Charles
C. Haynes, director of the Religious Freedom Center of the Newseum Institute, said it like this, If
these fights and lawsuits were only about the right of kids to pray in school, advocates of school
prayerwould have declared victory and gone... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Christians claimed in their argument that as long as a specific divine being is not mentioned in
the prayer said at school it does not violate the Establishment Clause; however, that is not the
case. Many religions do not believe a specific being or believe in praying to any type of divine
being. Therefore, praying in public schools, even not mentioning God, is still in violation of the
Establishment Clause due to the religions that believe in nothing. Secondly, one of their strongest
arguments was that moral decline in public schools was due to the absence of prayer. When they
make the statement that the rate of pregnancies, drug busts, and fights in public school systems
are inclining due to the absence of prayer they are committing a logical fallacy. They are making
a rather bold statement when saying that since prayer has been taking out of schools, the rate of
teenage pregnancies has steadily rose. This is a false analogy, also known as the cause and effect
fallacy. They assume that since one thing occurred (prayer being removed from schools) has caused
another event to occur (rise of immorality in schools). With this argument, they went too far and
completely lose their credibility. They cannot assume or expect the American public to believe that

Characteristics Of Judaism
There are many religions across the world, 4,200 to be exact. However, the most practiced religions
only come down to five, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam. Some of these are
very similar, but each of these religions has unique and distinct characteristics that set them apart
from one another. Judaismis an ancient monotheistic religion that encompasses the religion and
way of life of the Jewish people. Judaism is a monotheistic religion that believes in the godnamed
HaShem. It was founded around 1800 B.C.E in Israel by Abraham. Abraham and Moses were
very important people, Abraham being the prophet of God and Moses saving hundreds of slaves
from Egypt. The symbol of Judaism is David s Star, (вњЎ) this was used in a prayer book as a title
of the god of Israel. Jewish people worship their religions in temples and learn their religion from
their sacred text, Torah. The religion teaches the Ten Commandments, which teaches to cause no
harm and to remain peaceful. Some rules are to not eat pork and rest on Sabbath. The goal of
Judaism is to maintain a positive moral behavior. The Jewish belief is that when you die, you are
taken to the Promised land by Moses. (Continued on next page)
Some holidays that they will celebrate are Hanukkah: the festival of lights that starts on December
13th, and Rosh Hashanah: the Jewish New Year on September 22nd. Judaism has many different

Pseudoscience Theory
Research uses science and strict protocol to reach theories to explain hypothesis. Unfortunately
some science incompletely follows protocol or leaves out entire parts of the process. These
studies are considered pseudoscience. Brian Dunning wrote an article in 2007 called How to Spot
Pseudoscience. This article gives 15 telltale signs to spotting a pseudoscience. In the article Carol
Dweck Revisits the Growth Mindset article (Dweck, 2015), the authors posit that a Growth
Mindset is the key to growing one s brain. This theoryexplains that through increased effort one
can achieve feats of formerly impossible measures. Dunning s article is a useful guide in showing
that the Growth Mindset is a pseudoscience. Some reasons include the idea that if something
sounds too good to be true it probably is, the claim lacks the requirements of a theory and it also
fails to pass the Occam Razor test.
There is a saying that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. This applies to
claims made under the guise of science as well. How great would it be if effort were the magical
key to gaining depths of knowledge formerly thought to be unachievable? If I just try harder, I
will be able to overcome. How can this be tested? Is effort quantifiable? One way effort is
measured is by the amount of time ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Growth Mindset does not meet the requirements of a theory. For a theory to be
substantiated, it must be able to be duplicated and supported by not just one but multiple pieces

believe they are capable of doing so, as opposed to those with a fixed mindset , believing their
mindset is unchangeable or fixed, not malleable. Carol Dweck Revisits the Growth Mindset
article (Dweck, 2015). This study has yet to be duplicated. The lack of duplication of this study is

In doing some initial research about the Clarksville, Tennessee, community, there are many
wonderful youth focused organizations that our new chapter could partner with, including the
YMCA, the Boys Girls Club, the Clarksville
Montgomery County Public Library and the LEAP (Leadership, Enlightenment,
Achievement and Perseverance) Organization. In addition to volunteering and fundraising, there
are many valuable RIF resources the chapter will make available to our relevant partners to support
local literacy efforts. During the first two years after chartering, the Chapter Consultant will work
with the chapter to implement service opportunities in the local community and establish an annual
Reading Is Key event to benefit children in the Clarksville area. In five to ten years, we expect our
chapters to have at least one annual philanthropic event that supports the local community in
addition to an ongoing relationship with a local school or agency where members can perform
service hours and provide books for children.
We know our chapter will consistently be a positive influence in the
Clarksville community, the Middle Tennessee region, and beyond.

Edward Thatch s Revenge In Treasure Island
It was a clear August afternoon and Edward Thatch stood aboard his ship, the Queen Anne s
Revenge, holding a spyglass to his eye. He was looking at a small white speck on the horizon
that he assumed to be a brig, either Spanish or British. She s a Spanish Brig, sir! the lookout
yelled from the crow s nest, corroborating Edward s assumption. He was quite avid when it came
to taking prizes, and he was the most feared, despicable pirate in the West Indies. During battle,
Edward became Blackbeard, as he is better known, putting slow burning fuses in his hair and long
black beard and lighting them on fire to simulate him being the devil or a demon. All of his
enemies were terrified of him, and the very sight of him evoked terror, causing his enemies to run

The two ships both fired several more volleys, but the Spanish ship was quickly incapacitated.
The Queen Anne s Revenge pulled alongside it, and the crew members fired muskets and threw
grappling hooks. Heave! Heave! one of the crew members exclaimed. The brig was slowly
pulled closer, and the Spaniards returned fire and prepared to defend the ship. Once the two
ships were close enough, Blackbeard s crew members jumped aboard. Blackbeard lit the fuses in
his beard and jumped aboard as well. The enemies cowered in fear at the very sight of him. Soon
enough, the enemy surrendered, crushed by the sheer power of Blackbeard s crew. The deck of
the brig was a gruesome sight. Several bodies lay on the deck, some of them still conscious, in
agony. One Spanish Soldier missing one leg was screaming in pain. Some of Blackbeard s crew
grimaced at the sight, but Blackbeard smiled. Blackbeard s crew suffered no injuries aside from a
few minor abrasions and cuts. They took the brig s supplies, locked the surviving crew in the hold,
and continued on their business as if nothing happened. Just an average day for a not so average

Differentiation Strategy Of Zara
Differentiation strategy
A differentiation strategy seeks to provide products or services that offer benefit that are different
from those of competitors and that are widely valued by buyers. (Johnson, Scholes Whittington,
2008). The aim of using differentiation strategy is to achieve competitive advantage. This could be
achieved for example like the clothing brand ZARA, by offering better products at the same price.
A differentiation strategy must be based on two key factors: the strategic customers, the company
has to identify their needs and values, company also must identify who are its main competitors.

idea is to in an international market offer high quality goods to a low price. ZARA s main

Massimo Dutti. By positioning themselves in the market, they are affecting the consumer s
perception of the company. ZARA s main competitors have similar market positions, they target
the same customers and have similar business ideas. There are some factors that make ZARA
stand out as more exclusive. As the manager at ZARA in Georgia mentioned the clothes are not
mass produced and products that do not sell well are taken away from store. The collection is
changed every second week. This makes the products stand out as more unique in comparison to
H M products which are mass produced. This also makes the customer more willing to buy the
product immediately instead of thinking and reflecting on whether to buy or not. In the store you
can also get the feeling of exclusivity, as the manager in Georgia mentioned there is a lot of space

The Difficulties of Treating MRSA Essay
The Difficulties of Treating MRSA
MRSA is difficult to treat because of it s resistance. Acquired immune processes include the body
s adaptive response to antibiotics. ie when given the body makes specific antibodies to combat
MRSA by destroying it s outer membrane. Antibiotics can be given orally or through injections.
The main antibiotics used are vancomycin and rifampicin and they are most effective when used in
combination. If it s used early then it can eradicate the infection within 48 hours. Moreover, as a
preventative measure it may be given immediately after surgery (particularly invasive techniques.)
Vancomycin is considered the last line of defence but alone it may be ineffective as,... Show more

Modulations of antibiotics policies alone do not ultimately eliminate MRSA from clinical
settings. Thus, another method for the cytoxicity of MRSA is described by Von Eiff et al. They
describe how S. Aureus can be killed in vitro by shock waves. They also suggest osmolyte
stimulation of innate anti microbial defence systems and bacteriophhage therapy to eliminate the
weaker strains of MRSA. Therefore, concentrate efforts on a narrower range of MRSA so MRSA
as a whole is more likely to be significantly reduced if not eradicated completely.
Other alternatives to anti biotics include surgery. This may be via thorough the excision of all
infected tissue and bone (which is a compulsory procedure,) the management of dead space with
packing or drains.
However, anti biotics used in combination with surgery is often necessary for a more long term
cure. On top of this the management of MRSA requires infection control, offloading, adequate
vascularity, and meticulous wound care.
A surgical option could be through maggot therapy. This is the debridement of necrotic tissue with
sterile fly larvae and clinical trials suggest it is very effective in relation to MRSA. Maggots can
provide a cost effective alternative to conventional treatments, but the therapy become very
unpopular with the introduction of antibiotics. However, with the treatment of chronic wounds

Water in the Middle East
For long time Israel was suspected in embezzlement of South Lebanese water during the
occupation of water called safety strip from 1978 to 2000. In the report of UN experts presented at
the annual meeting of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia ( ESCWA) in
Amman in May 1994 , it was reported that since the establishment of this zone Israelwas annually
pumping water from Litani to its territory with pumps installed at the bridge of Khardali, in a
volume of 150 million m3 . Another 65 million m3 allegedly was taken from Wazzani and Hasbani .
The edition of the U.S. Defense Department Lebanon : a review of the country ( 1989 ) also states
that in the late 1970 s early 1980 s Lebanese reported a plea of derivation of water from the small
tributaries of the Hasbani to Israel (Middle East International, в„– 458, 10 September 1993).
Western and Arab media published an information that the scale of water derivation to Israel
were much more, only from the Litani up to 55 % of the annual discharge . Among all the details
in particular, it was reported that Israeli experts have installed shut off valves at the water
pumping station on the river, which allows switching part of the flow in a specially built 12
kilometer water pipeline leading to Hasbani river which feeds the Jordan River and through the
Galilee lake (Ibid).
Most of the accusations against Israel had no documentary evidence, it can be indirectly indicated
by the fact that Lebanon has never

The Value Homeowners Place On Neighborhood Local Public Goods
The goal of my research is investigate differences in the value homeowners place on
neighborhood local public goods. I define local public goods as either non excludable or non
rivalrous neighborhood amenities such as open space, school quality, and public transportation,
and disamenities such as crime. Previous research has focused on estimating the average value or
willingness to pay for these types of goods. However, just as most preferences can vary by income
level, so can the preferences for local public goods. From a public policy persepctive it is important
to understand this heterogeneity so that local governments can better serve their residents. For

Assuming higher income households purchase more expensive homes, we can anaylze how
preferences for different public goods vary by income. I have acquired data on neighborhood
amenities and disamenities from several sources. This fellowship would allow me to purchase

rates. It would also allow me to focus more of my time in geocoding houses, open space,
roadways, crime, and census data to get more precise measures of local public goods and account
for any spatial correlation between houses. For several decades researchers have used hedonic
theory to estimate the effect of various local public goods on house prices. These studies have
examined the value households place on a countless number of neighborhood amenities and
disamenities, including open space, school quality, crime, air quality, and nearby public
infrastructure. Understanding households willingness to pay is paramount for local governments,
city planners, and policymakers in determining the optimal provision of various public goods and

  • 2. Why The Mass Extinction Of Dinosaurs 65 million years ago, dinosaurs ruled the planet. These fascinating animals were the largest, strongest creatures to ever walk the face of the earth, yet, they met a fate that would change the world forever. All that is left are the fossilized remains of these captivating creatures. Their fossils, along with the layers of our Earths rock and sediment, tell a story of how they lived and how they died. However, there is still an ongoing debate in the world of science of exactly what catastrophe caused these magnificent animals to take their last breathes and never reappear again. • 3. The Effect Of Weight Lifting And Its Effects On Basketball... Weight Lifting and Its Effects on Basketball Players Ten people gather around a center point waiting as two giants square off between one another, clashing for the most valuable prize of the battle ahead: the basketball. A game of strategy and high demands, basketball calls on both the body and the mind in harmony in order to secure a victory. It calls on your body in many ways that will strip you of energy unlike any other sport. Additionally, the game will demand a high intelligence and acumen from the mind when making split second decisions. Lifting weights can positively impact your body, physically and mentally; furthermore, this training can then be applied onto the basketball court to help increase the physical and mental attributes of a player. Being well equipped physically for basketball provides many advantages when you apply it correctly. Basketball is a unique sport that contains non stop movement in every moment. The objective is simple: score more points than the other team. This is accomplished by a constant burst of speed, agility, and quickness that combines for fluid motions up and down the court. If a player is not trained properly, this consistent activity can be extremely strenuous to their body. Plus, in a game of basketball the gameplay is live until the ball goes out of bounds, there is a foul, timeout called, or the end of a quarter. While this may seem like quite a few factors to allow a dead ball and some rest time, they do not occur as much ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Piggy s arms and legs twitched a bit like a pig after it has been killed (217). This is what can happen to someone when all signs of civilization, order and power disappear and have no more meaning to members of a group or society. In the writing of William Golding s Lord of the Flies (1954), the symbol of power and civilization is the conch. Once that is lost, all bets are off. When the novel begins, two boys are talking about what has happened and why they are on this island. While walking on the beach, the main character Ralph then proceeds to find a shell which the two boys call the conch. Blowing on this shell Ralph calls a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the very beginning the conch is used to bring all of the boys in the story together. Ralph blows it and they come. This is the first sign of its power. The boys have been lost and now there is this thing, much like a school bell, calling them to be brought together. It has brought order to this strange place in which they are stranded. During these boys escapade, when one wants to speak in front of the assembly, one must have the conch in his hand. We ll have to have hands up like at school...Then I ll give him the conch (35). They are setting up rules just as they had learned in their civilization. They are also making the conch the only way one can talk at meetings. All throughout this novel the boys are called to meetings to discuss the rules, the fire, and many other assorted things. One of these things is a beast that comes in the night but does not leave foot prints or any trail at any time. All the boys are very afraid of this beast and what it may do to them if it gets hold of them. As it turns out the beast is in the boys: You knew, didn t you? I m part of you? (172). This is the lord of the flies, also known as the beast, talking to Simon the first boy murdered. The beast is their unwillingness to maintain a civilization; it is their transformation into savages. • 5. Pros And Cons Of Brian Mulroney Martin Brian Mulroney was the 18th Prime Minister of Canada and indeed a leader full of great qualities (Sawatsky 7). Born in a small town in Quebec, Mulroney was a bilingual Anglophone who harbored a tremendous political ambition (22). He belonged to the Progressive Conservative party and came to power in 1984 (Parker 22). Mulroney significantly affected the Canadian history through his socio political, environmental and economic reforms. He had a powerful, tremendous and symbolic impact on Canadian history, socio politically by passing the Indian Act, the Multiculturalism Act and introducing Meech Lake and Charlottetown Accords., environmentally by signing Air Quality Agreement, the Montreal Protocol and cancelling the National Energy Program... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First of all, the introduction of Goods and Services Tax by Mulroney built the foundation for eliminating federal deficit, which occurs when the government spends more money than it makes (Parker 22). Deficit increased the selling off of the capital assets in Canada to finance the purchases of slowly diminishing goods and services, which undermined future production and raised unemployment rates and inflation (Swatsky 309). Not only did the introduction of GST overcame deficit by a significant amount, it also proved to be an important source of generating revenues, improving the competitive position of Canada s economy in the world and acting as an efficient way for managing the country (Good and Bad sides of GST). This could be justified though the fact that when Mulroney introduced the GST, the revenues grew by one third, and GDP by 1.2%. Although it was not enough to stop deficit at first, it did slow it down and eventually hauled it (Coyne). But at the same time, his attempt to stop deficit limited his ability to deliver the promises he made in terms of services and infrastructures.(Info base Learning). Secondly, the signing off the Free Trade Agreement with United States and North American Free Trade Agreement with the addition of Mexico came as a great economic contribution to Canadian history as it marked the creation of the largest free trade region in the world. With the elimination of tariff and non tariff barriers, NAFTA opened gates for Canada towards economic prosperity and growth. With no imposed taxes, NAFTA provided Canada access to the wider range of Mexican and U.S markets, expanding Canada s productivity and allowed Canada to attract more U.S investors, firms and companies to Canada, to invest in the wide variety of natural resources, and. Meher Baba Silence Essay Having seen Meher Baba s observations and reasons for his silence through his own words, now one can see some interesting observations made by individuals who were close to Meher Baba in the Interpretations of Meher Baba Silence Eruch recalls that very often people used to ask about Meher Baba s long silence. Most frequented question was when He intended to break it. As if answering to this question, one day in 1954 in answer, He just stopped using His alphabet board and started to communicate by using finger gestures. In silence one can get clarity about one s visions and wishes, one s patterns of thinking and feeling and how one acts in one s world. Silence can be a tool which helps one know and experience fully who am I and what one s purpose in life is. In the modern world there is hardly ever complete silence. People also avoid silence and even seem to be afraid of it. There is always some background noise, whether that is traffic, music or a TV. It is difficult for some of us to be in silence because it so clearly brings us face to face with our own identity. This becomes awkward because so often one plays a role and is embarrassed or ashamed to face the real one. One is not in peace with oneself so one tries to keep the mind busy with different kinds of input so that one does not have to think of who am I . Speech is the biggest consumer of one s energy, the easiest way of dissipating one energy. When talking one uses a lot more oxygen than when one is in silence. Excessive talking causes energy burnout and mind gets overheated which then in turn has effects on one s reactions. One becomes angry and impatient due to which one is not able to act calmly, coolly or rationally anymore. Also listening to people who talk a lot takes a lot of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Introducing Systems Theory, Marriage And Family Therapists Introducing Systems Theory Marriage and Family Therapists (MFT) in training are tasked with helping a family work through conflict and arrive and more intimate and interdependent relationships, which can seem daunting or maybe even terrifying. However, the interaction patterns that show up in families can find some context and clarity for a therapist who knows systems theory. Systems theory suggests that individuals cannot be understood in isolation from their family context because families create relational processes and generate a sequence of interactions and behaviors in order to maintain dynamic stability of the self regulating family system (Nichols, 2013, pp. 58 59). How does this general systems theory help an MFT guide a family in therapy? In this paper I will take three systems theory principles and apply them to a movie in order to demonstrate how it provides a language and context for MFTs, thus making it an essential tool in family therapy. I will begin with a brief synopsis of Demme s movie, Rachel Getting Married (2008), and its primary family characters. Next I will discuss three key principles of systems theory and use the movie characters interactions as examples for each corresponding principle. In the conclusion I will share my learning experience in doing this assignment. The Movie Synopsis Rachel Getting Married (Demme, 2008) is about Kym, the estranged daughter, return home to her upscale Connecticut family for her sister Rachel s wedding after ... Starting at a new school can be challenging for some new students. New students may experience racism at a new school. As cited from the American Heritage College Dictionary1, racism has two definitions. The first is the belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others. Second is discrimination or prejudice based on race. Arnold Spirit, Jr. grew up on the Spokane Indian Reservation located just west of Spokane, Washington. As a young teenager, he knew that it would be a challenge for him, being the only Native American student besides the team mascot attending an all white school but Arnold went ahead anyway. Arnold thought that learning from the white kids would benefit him so he determined to leave the reservation to go to Reardan, in order to get a better education. During the days of Lou Gehrig, whenever there was a baseball game, people usually forgot their worries that day and went to watch their heroes play. 1n 1917, the Americans declared war on Germany. Even in America s ballparks, German immigrants sought to distance themselves from their native land (Eig, 19). In a world of insecurity caused by the jeopardy of war and an ongoing economic depression, Lou Gehrig signified a show of pride and confidence until Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis put an abrupt end to his playing days. When it comes to baseball, there have been a few high caliber players who become American icons. Lou Gehrig became that icon of the era in which he thrived. While he spent much of his career in the shadow of his mentor and teammate Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig would eventually emerge from Ruth s shadow and represent the values of the 1930 s. During Lou Gehrig s era baseball served as a distraction from the adversity of the world war and the depression. In the 1920s, America ended World War I with a bodacious force not to be ignored with. The Roaring Twenties, was an era when America accomplished immense economic development. The stock market soared as the citizens of the United States hastily purchased goods on credit. In this research paper, we will be discussing an aspect of supply chain and logistics that I am interested in, how both are related and different, key activities in supply chain and logistics, and the ethics and social responsibility in both supply chain and logisticsmanagement. Logistics is a vital component of supply chain management. Both involve the planning, carrying out and management of goods, services and information from the point of origin to the point of consumption. Logistics aligns the multifaceted pattern of traffic and transportation, shipping and receiving, import and export operations, warehousing, inventory management, purchasing, production planning and customer service. Organizations, like the one I work for, see logistics as a critical design of the supply chain. When organizations incorporate logistics as a key component of the business plan, they can use it to manage, coordinate and monitor resources needed to move products in a smooth, timely, cost effective and reliable manner. Like Logistics, Supply Chain Management is an essential element of operational efficiency. The impact that supply chain has on our organization is substantial and exponential. Two of the main ways SCM affects business include: boosts customer service and our overall bottom line. Surface Area to Volume Ratio and the Relation to the Rate of Diffusion Aim and Background This is an experiment to examine how the Surface Area / Volume Ratio affects the rate of diffusion and how this relates to the size and shape of living organisms. The surface area to volume ratio in living organisms is very important. Nutrients and oxygen need to diffuse through the cell membrane and into the cells. Most cells are no longer than 1mm in diameter because small cells enable nutrients and oxygen to diffuse into the cell quickly and allow waste to diffuse out of the cell quickly. • 21. Changes During The Agricultural Community Essay Due to changes in the agricultural community there was in early nineteenth century East Anglia a significant situation of underemployment within the agricultural labourers community. At this time it was also being recognised that there was an ever increasing growth in population; for instance: several landowners and journalists attributed the problems of rural society to the size of the labourers families and to their tendency to marry at an early age. It has been suggested that the average size of the agricultural labourers household was 4.9. This population rise in turn put pressure on the supply of housing, resulting in many agricultural labouring families living in small, squalid and overcrowded cottages, many consisting of just one room, with no ceiling, just the bare roof tiles and a clay floor. The building itself would have been constructed from unbound stone or wattle and mud. It can be suggested that: The vegetable substances mixed with the mud to make it bind, rapidly decompose, leaving the walls porous. The earth of the floor is full of vegetable matter [...] it is peculiarly liable to damp. It can be suggested therefore that the growth of population, coupled with the deterioration of living standards within agricultural communities of East Anglia contributed towards the pauperisation of the agricultural labourers and their families. In Canto IIV, Plutus, a raging god of wealth blocks Dante from entering the fourth circle. With the intervention of Virgil, they are able to pass through. In the circle, Virgil explains to Dante that the one with the ability to rule who is to be rich and who is to be poor is only fortune. Human beings are portrayed as people who waste their lives while fighting for wealth and they end blaming fortune instead of glorifying her (Jaffe, Valerie and Selens 14). It seems that fortune is not bothered by criticisms from the humans, but instead she enjoys doing what she does best. Dante has borrowed several characters to be able to explain the role of fortune in Canto IIV. Such include hoarders who he describes as people who accumulate wealth for themselves. • 36. Sellar s Myth of the Given Many empiricists claim that there is a sort of knowledge that is directed towards our consciousness and this knowledge is assumed to be the given. The given which is held in all of us has access that is highly privileged and presupposes no learning and no prior form of associations. It provides the foundation and first layer for empirical knowledge. The knowledge that is gained through experience and pure reason. Empirical knowledge comes from observation. I will argue in favor of Sellars rejection of the Given; that the Myth of the Given is truly untenable. Wilfrid Sellars labeled the existence of such knowledge as the Myth of the Given. When calling something a myth then that would mean that it does not exist at all. Sellars rejected all the arguments that were in favor that were put forward in supporting the existence of the given and claims that empirical knowledge, which has been dictated as rational and has no need for the given. His position in disregarding the given has been constituted as the main focus of the philosopher s career. Let s delve straight into why Sellars decided to dismiss the given. Sellars rejected the idea that knowledge is given. The Myth of the Given plays on the notion that knowledge is either basic or given . Here is an example: If you do not possess the concept of something being blue then you cannot speak of. DISCUSSION The general analysis of invertebrate richness and diversity prove that shallow leaf litter is more biodiverse than deep leaf litter. From graph 2, shallow leaf litter is proven to be more biodiverse where the spread of invertebrate richness is higher with a relatively low rate of error denoted by the low standard deviation. Similarly, figure 6 also shows a similar trend where the mean of shallow leaf litter diversity was greater than deep leaf litter. The mean results of invertebrate abundance also show shallow leaf litter to be more abundant, however this is affected by the extreme outlier seen in figure 2, where there is a large leeway for error due to the high standard deviation. This may be due to human error due to transcription, an error in counting the amount of species or the designated shallow leaf litter contained species that were extremely common, providing a large abundance value. However, figure 1 and the comparison of boxplots in graph 1, show the overall values of deep leaf litter are centred higher, indicating that deep leaf litter has greater abundance, excluding outliers. Similarly, the analysis of richness and diversity indicate that deep light traps are more biodiverse than shallow light traps and are quite trustworthy as shown by the low standard deviations. According to figure 6, the mean of both habitats were very similar but deep light traps had a slightly higher mean. Abundance of deep light traps also proves to be greater if we ... Homais, the town pharmacist in Yonville, spends most of his time adulating people in authority and attempting to publicize his good deeds to reach his success at the end novel. Moreover, Homais s immoral and self serving actions clearly display that he is certainly the last character in Madame Bovarythat deserves to be encompassed in glory when the story has finished. Although it originally seems that Homais is an insignificant character who will chatter incessantly to anyone with social status, he ends up serving as one of the chief players who unfolds Flaubert s themes. Flaubert, through her description of the apothecary, characterizes the age of modernity to be synonymous with the new bourgeoisie class that has emerged in France. The faith in scientific or technological development, the increasing secularism of the era, and the prioritization of the individual were all themes of the time period. Flaubert uses the town pharmacist to portray the issues she noticed in 19th century France. They are making a rather bold statement when saying that since prayer has been taking out of schools, the rate of teenage pregnancies has steadily rose. This is a false analogy, also known as the cause and effect fallacy. • 55. Water in the Middle East For long time Israel was suspected in embezzlement of South Lebanese water during the occupation of water called safety strip from 1978 to 2000. In the report of UN experts presented at the annual meeting of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia ( ESCWA) in Amman in May 1994 , it was reported that since the establishment of this zone Israelwas annually pumping water from Litani to its territory with pumps installed at the bridge of Khardali, in a volume of 150 million m3 . Previous research has focused on estimating the average value or willingness to pay for these types of goods. However, just as most preferences can vary by income level, so can the preferences for local public goods. From a public policy persepctive it is important to understand this heterogeneity so that local governments can better serve their residents. Assuming higher income households purchase more expensive homes, we can anaylze how preferences for different public goods vary by income. I have acquired data on neighborhood amenities and disamenities from several sources. This fellowship would allow me to purchase even more detailed data on open space, nearby public infrastructure and amenities, and crime rates. It would also allow me to focus more of my time in geocoding houses, open space, roadways, crime, and census data to get more precise measures of local public goods and account for any spatial correlation between houses. For several decades researchers have used hedonic theory to estimate the effect of various local public goods on house prices. These studies have examined the value households place on a countless number of neighborhood amenities and disamenities, including open space, school quality, crime, air quality, and nearby public infrastructure. Understanding households willingness to pay is paramount for local governments, city planners, and policymakers in determining the optimal provision of various public goods and services. A quick survey of the hedonic literature finds that the effects of certain public goods on housing prices often vary in their significance, magnitude and direction.
