Mandatory Conscription In The Military
1. Attention Getter:
1. Mandatory conscription has left a bad taste in the mouths of Americans since the Vietnam War. In
modern day society, it can be seen as slavery and Americans today have become accustomed to the
voluntary army system we currently have. For some, the perceived loss of freedom also means not
being able to achieve educational and occupational goals, but that is definitely not the case.
2. Reason to Listen:
1. In fact, there are many educational and occupational benefits for American soldiers. Many citizens
of the United States today do not know about these benefits. If they did, they might change their
opinion on the draft and conscription as a requirement. There are many skills and benefits to be gained
from enlisting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First and foremost, they offer financial assistance for undergraduate and graduate problems. They help
to cover tuition costs as well as housing and books. In addition, other programs, like work study and
tradework training, are available. With these programs, veterans can go to school, earn money through
a job, and train for specific careers like HVAC and EMT ( Education Benefits , 2017).
b. The GI Bill also provides assistance with career advancement. Entrepreneurship training helps
veterans start their own businesses, flight training allows veterans to become airline pilots, and
funding for license and certification testing helps servicemen and women become certified mechanics,
therapists, web developers, and attorneys ( Education Benefits , 2017).
c. Trends have shown a decline in the use of GI Bill educational benefits. Restrictions on tuition
assistance, confusing enrollment processes, and strict admission requirements are causing drops in the
number of servicemen and women taking advantage of GI Bill benefits. Some of these restrictions
include limitations on which schools can be attended and how long these benefits can be used for. The
American Military University saw nearly 2,700 students drop out from 2015 to 2016 (Gross Altman,
2017).
Transition: Fortunately, some legislative action is being taken to address these recent declines.

Chemistry and Technology in Biodiesel Essay
Chemistry and technology in biodiesel Biodiesel is a cleaner diesel fuel for diesel engines in many
types of vehicles. It is safer for the environment and is a cleaner version of diesel. It is made from
soybeans and other vegetation. It is made with a process called transesterification it seperates glycerin
from fat or oil and then methyl esters and glycerin is what is left over and used for the fuel. Biodiesel
had its origins with the invention of the diesel engine, as the diesel engine was designed to run on
Biodiesel. Rudolf Diesel was the inventor of the Diesel engine. He designed a single 3 m iron cylinder
with a flywheel at its base which ran on its own power for the first time in Augsburg, Germany on

A lot of the crops are home grown in the united states so, we wouldn t have to depend on other
countries for stuff to make fuels out of. Some draw backs to biodiesel is that it is more expensive to
produce than petroleum based diesel fuel, and can degrade rubber fuel lines on older engines and
reduces the life of the rubber lines. Biodiesel on a wider scale can turn crops into cash crops and
reduce the amount of crops for food. Most diesel engines can run off of biodiesel which means a lot of
vehicles wont have to be altered to use biodiesel instead of petroleum based diesel fuel. That means
they are easy to use but can sometimes be hard to find. Biodiesel affects society today, because big
businesses can use them to have greener vehicles and burn the fuel cleaner to help the environment
and can keep people from having respiratory problems because of the less pollution. It can also help
on the economy because you can use used vegetable oil from fast food restraunts. Therefore biodiesel
has pros and cons to it. It can cut down pollutions and the use of petroleum based diesel fuel, and the
dependence on other countries for petroleum. But also, it can be more expensive to produce and can
cut away at our crops for foods. These technological advances in fuel can help the environment and
reduce on pollutions which is a big deal these days. Petroleum is not a renewable resource, but this
organic vegetation is. Using a renewable resource for fuel

Duke Ellington Research Paper
Duke Ellington was an American composer, and a bandleader who had composed thousands of scores

The Prime Minister David Cameron
The British voters have decisively spoken on the June 23 referendum that they want their country out
of the European Union. The 52 percent of them supported Brexit, or Britain s exit, while the rest
favored staying in the regional group. The decision has thrown the United Kingdom, Europe and the
world into a political and economic vortex of uncertainty, which is likely to be worse before it gets
better.
In the United Kingdom, the Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron, who had led the campaign
to stay in the EU, announced that he would stand down in the wake of the referendum result. Jeremy
Corbyn, the chief of the main opposition Labor Party, is facing a revolt against him for not being out
there campaigning whole hearted to convince labor voters to vote to stay in, not leave, the EU. He has
sacked one shadow cabinet leader and one cabinet leader has already resigned. More upheaval is
expected to emerge in the next few days.
Brexit has unsettled British sub national politics as well. Nicola Sturgeon, the first minister and leader
of the Scottish Nationalist Party, has announced that the second Scottish referendum for independence
is on the table and she would seek Scotland to remain in the EU even after Britain leaves. Scottish
voters overwhelmingly voted in favor of not leaving the EU. In the wake of wide support in Northern
Ireland to stay in Europe, Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness has demanded a referendum for
his province s unification with Ireland.

Marjane Satrapi s Perspective On The Iranian Revolution
Marjane Satrapi s perspective on the Iranian Revolution was vivid. She was six years old when it
started, and fourteen when it ended. She experienced the overthrow of the Shah s regime, the triumph
of the Islamic Revolution, and the effects of the war with Iraq first hand. Satrapi has great accounts of
daily life in Iran, with the revolution and demonstrations going on around her. Her ideas were
intelligent and outspoken, even though she was as young as she was. She was the great granddaughter
of one of Iran s last emperors. This gives her a unique point of view to the war going on around her.
When she was young, and the conflicts in Iran had just started, they immediately interested her. She
wanted to go to demonstrations to fight for what she believed in, just like everyone else was doing.
Marjane Satrapi has a first hand account of the events of the revolution in Iran, and how they affected
the people around her and Iran as a whole. The Iranian Revolution refers to the several events that
took place in an effort to remove the Shah from Iran in the late 1970 s. At the time, the Shah of Iran,
much like his father, ran the country as an autocracy. This means that there was one person in absolute
power. The people of Iran did not like this, and they wanted the Shah out. They attended
demonstrations where they protested for the Shah to leave. The Iranian Army shot at the protestors,
and they threw rocks at the army. The Shah finally left Iran in exile, and the people

Labour Movement Vs Proletariat
Labor movement and proletariat were the results of Marx and Engels ideological thoughts. Their
vision of the society was a world where capitalism doesn t exist. They thought that the proletariat
arises because the capitalism using machines started to replace workers and killing competition of
middle class, usually with small business. Proletariat is the class of society that live by its labor. They
also thought that business should be owned by proletariat and private property shouldn t exist. They
describe capitalism as a brutal system that leave poor people with nothing. In contrast to the theory of
Marx and Engels, imperialism is based on the differences of people and the capabilities of each of
them being successful. Social Darwinism was

An Essay On Frida Kahlo
Considered one of Mexico s greatest artists, Frida Kahlo was a self portrait artist and is still admired
as a feminist icon. She was born on July 6, 1907 in Coyoacan, Mexico City and grew up in the family
s house where was later referred as the Blue House. During her childhood, Frida had poor health
causing her to contract polio at age six and had to be in her bed all the time for nine months, this
disease caused her right foot and leg to grow much thinner than her left extremity. Kahlo began
painting after she was severely injured in a bus accident where a steel handrail impaled her through
the hip. She later became politically active and on 1929 she married fellow communist activist, Diego
Rivera. In 1938, Frida had a greater exhibition at a New York City gallery, selling about half of the
total paintings shown there. A few years later, she went to live to Paris for an amount of time, there
she exhibited some of her paintings and befriended important artists such as Marcel Duchamp and
Pablo Picasso. Her health issues began consuming her around 1950 even though she continued to
paint and support political causes despite her lack of mobility. Deeply depressed, and about a week
after her 47th birthday, Kahlo died on July 13 at her precious Blue House.

Another important point in sanction clauses is the wording of the terms that are included in the

variety of arguments and claims will appear from clients and companies against the insurance
companies and P I Clubs, a fact that will have detrimental economical consequences for them. Also, in

Standard Club, we conclude that the wording is specific and strong in both cases, so they are clear for
the protection of the insurer. The first instance focus on the source of application of sanctions namely
the Organizations that enforce the regulations, while the second, on the kinds of trade operations and
voyages that the assured may have in relevance to this country. The penalties for breach of sanctions
are generally several. In particular, many banks have suffered huge fines in the United States, a point
which except from economical issues, affects to the increase of the potential risk in case of an incident

so they may be inadvertently involved in sanctions breaches. In 2011, following the examination of a

to be valid as to deny cover to an Iranian shipowner . Broadly speaking, the most proper solution to

International Trade Agreements And How Governmental...
This paper will discuss the benefits United States (U.S) had by engaging in international trade
agreements and how governmental influences benefitted trade. To regulate international trade between
nations, international trade agreements exist. These agreements involve regulating imports, exports
and international trade of some specialty goods. The United States have been involved in many
international trade agreements including free trade agreements. Free trade Agreements (FTA) helps the
United States to open up foreign markets for domestic firms. The agreements help to reduce barrier on
exports, ease trading across the border, improve economic growth, increase productivity, increase
employment opportunities, and boost agriculture exports. There are critical functions associated with
multilateral trading systems like World Trade Organization (WTO)/General Agreement on Tariffs and
Trade (GATT). Some of those critical functions are resolving disputes efficiently, create a better
trading environment, and preserve peace among countries. The initial sections of this paper will
discuss the benefits of international trade agreements for exports, imports, jobs, agriculture, and
economy.
Another topic that is discussed in this paper is governmental influences on trade and internal policies.
Governmental influences helped United States to reap benefits, from an economic and non economic
standpoint. There are political, economic and cultural reasons as well for the Government

The Protestant Ethic And Spirit Of Capitalism
Brayan Munante Spring 2017
Prof. Delia TERM PAPER
Sociology 101
The Protestant Ethic and Spirit of Capitalism Max Weber (1864 1920) considered seriously about the
emerging dilemmas from the socio cultural and political state of affairs in Germany and criticised
purely the historical materialistic concept of explanations. Within his book The Protestant Ethic and
the Spirit of Capitalism , Weber instead depicts a more conceivable and pragmatic explanation that the
materialization of capitalism owed much to the specific patterns of religious motivational explanations
in Calvinism between various industrialists at that period. As these people (Calvinists) believed that
god s knowledge and astuteness was immeasurable to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additionally, Weber explains that the progress in administrative sphere can be directed only through a
guided reckoning, impartiality and competence. In the intellectual sphere, progress was thought to be
achieved by the aid of scientific methods, testing skills, experiential data collection because theories
that are imitative through scientific reasoning supersede to those that are previously attributed to
magical causes. However, this particular enlightenment ideology of motive and self realisation is
distinguishable with that of Marx s view of progress and is still qualified by Weber by the
rationalisation itself.
Compared to Marx perspective, the rationalisation and progress according to Weber involve the
positive features of effectiveness, manageability, uniformity, unavoidability and impartiality. These
positive aspects of rationalisation can result in enhanced capacity, the development of capacity and
power relations and thereby assists in attaining progress in each sphere depicted above. Unlike Marx,
rationalisation in economic perspective as witnessed in Western Capitalism was been considered by
Weber as the process of reasoning out unreasonable sentiments that hamper accrual and estimation of
profit, progress and sentiments like faith, thoughtfulness solidarity

Analysis Of Schuman s Speech
The Schuman Declaration is the foundation of the European project that we live in today. In his
speech on 9 May, 1950, Robert Schuman proposed to pool France and Germany s Coal and Steel
production together for the greater purpose to create peace and safeguard Europe. For some it came as
a surprise because only five years passed since devastating World War II came to an end. Withal, it
gives room for interpretation and speculations. Therefore, this paper will analyse the real motivation
of Robert Schuman whether his intentions were primary to secure peace in Europe or whether, he had
something different and lower intentions in mind.
First a version of the Schuman Declaration must be decided on to continue the analysis further. To find

provides enough credibility for the idea of the ECSC. Withal, the reader should not completely

A Comparison of Theories of Social Capital by Pierre...
A Comparison of Theories of Social Capital by Pierre Bourdieu and James Coleman Social capital is a
sociological theory which has gained increasing attention in recent years. Whilst Bourdieu can be
credited with introducing the term to sociology, it was James Coleman who allowed the concept to
gain widespread recognition, highlighting its importance as an individual notion. For Bourdieu social
capital forms a part of an overarching theory of fields , capital and their relation to class reproduction.
The key importance of social capital for Bourdieu is its relationship with economic capital, whilst for
Coleman, social capital is seen to lead to human capital. It seems that both Bourdieu and ... Show

Secondly, the fundamental contrasts between explanations of the social processes which allow social
capital to exist will be discussed, whilst I will argue that this is perhaps the most important difference
between Bourdieu and Coleman s theories. Thirdly, I will address the ramifications of such
differenced in terms of later attempts to use these two theoretical approaches in empirical testing and
practice, arguing that whilst Coleman s approach may seem more attractive, being inherently more
testable and applicable, it is in fact fraught with ambiguities and inconsistencies, many of which
Bourdieu s perhaps more challenging theory manages to avoid. It would firstly seem important to
compare the two definitions of social capital offered by Bourdieu and Coleman. Bourdieu defines the
concept as, the aggregate of the actual or potential resources which are linked to possession of a
durable network of more or less institutionalised relationships of mutual acquaintance or recognition.
(1985 p.248). Coleman, however defined social capital by its function as a variety of entities with two
elements in common: They all consist of some aspect of social structures, and they facilitate certain
action of actors whether persons or corporate actors within the structure. (1990 p.302). Whilst both
theorists concentrate upon the benefits accruing to individuals or families by

Tutoring in the Lifelong Learning Sector.
In a post 16 educational world, where student retention and achievement are given high priority, the
tutor s role is central to successful learning (Green, 2001, p.1). I endeavour to study my tutorial
practice; analysing a recent one to one tutorial with student X (case study) (Appendix 26). I shall
outline ways of improving my tutorial skills and techniques (Appendix 29) using reflective practice
and feedback from student X in the form of a completed feedback questionnaire (Appendix 15 and
16). My aim is to develop the necessary pastoral and academic support skills (Appendix 29) in order
to plan and deliver effective one to one and group tutorials for the future.
The tutor s understanding of the various roles they play during a tutorial is vital for effective student
support. This role includes the following: comprehending that the coaching session is directly linked
with teaching; helping students in terms of a particular skill and offering students general guidance
and support linked with friendship. All these characteristics need underlying strong pastoral elements
linked to an academic outcome embedded within the tutorial session, thus helping students find a
solution. The quality of the learner/tutor interaction is key and increasingly colleges have moved to

How Did Samuel De Champlain Influence French Culture
The influence of French culture within Canada has a rich history that can only be attributed to one
man, Samuel de Champlain who not only shaped the history of France but of Canada as well.
Champlain was a French explorer (cartographer, geographer, etc.) who journeyed across the Atlantic
Ocean from 1603 until his death in 1635 (Ritchie, 2016; Samuel de Champlain , 2004; Wikipedia,
2016). He is often labeled as the Father of New France (or Quebec) as he sailed to Canada and was the
first man to establish a French colony there. The impact of his 1609 expedition to New France has
helped to shape the historical, scientific and cultural aspects of our society.

The 1609 expedition of Samuel de Champlain was conceived from his want to explore and colonize
Quebec, but was supported because of political and economic gains that were to be had by the French
bourgeoisie from an established fur trade. There were many arguments that broke out between the
wealthy investors of Champlain s expedition whom sought to monopolize the fur trade individually.
This led to Champlain going back to Canada to create better ties with the Aboriginal peoples of
Quebec in order to ensure that they would supply beaver pelts that he could give to his investors who
would sell them in France (Wilson, 2013; Champlain, Samuel de, 2016). This shows that while
Samuel de Champlain s expeditions were meant to focus around the colonization of eastern Canada,
many investors of his exploration just sought to gain even more power and money by monopolizing
the fur trade and becoming wealthy off of it. While the interests of the French elite were at the heart of
Champlain s expedition, this very fact was the reason that he decided to make good relations with the
native peoples of Quebec (save for the Iroquois who he not on good terms with [Monette, 2016;
Wikipedia, 2016]), as they would supply him with furs for that reason ( Champlain, Samuel de, 2016)
. While much of Champlain s 1608 expedition to Canada revolved around the political and economic
gains of his backers, it ended up causing Champlain to treat the native peoples of Canada

The Factors and Objectives The Russo Japanese War
1. The Russo Japanese War began on February 8, 1904 and lasted until 5 September, 1905. The
majority of the conflict was conducted within the region of Manchuria, however, several naval battles
occurred within the Yellow Sea as well as in Tsushima Strait (the sea area between the southeastern
Korean Peninsula and the southwestern portion of Japan).
2. The principle parties in this war were the Russian and Japanese Empires. While various aspects of
the Chinese Empire played their roles in the lead up to the conflict they did not, however, side with
either of the two warring Empires during the war. Russia did have an alliance of sorts with France and
Germany, however, this advantage in numbers was negated due to Japan s formal alliance with Great
Britain, who declared support for Japan should a third party become involved in a conflict.
3. The main theme for the context of this war was Russian and Japanese simultaneous determination
to develop spheres of influence in eastern Asia, primarily within the nation of China and specifically
within the region of Manchuria. This sense of determination found Meiji Japan fighting the Chinese
Qing Dynasty during the Sino Japanese War over control of Korea, which was a Chinese tributary
state. This war lasted from 1894 1895 and concluded with the signing of the Treaty of Shimonoseki.
Within the terms of the treaty, China recognizing the independence of Korea and ceded the Liaodong

Theme Of Nature In Beowulf
Beowulf is an epic dense with imagery derived from Anglo Saxon Pagan culture and Christianity
because it is was written in England during the 8th century, a period of Christian migration, growth,
and conversion. From the sea where he loses a fight but fends off evil sea monsters, the forests, and
specific animals such as the raven, Beowulf blends nature, mysticism, and reality seamlessly. The
descriptions of nature are general and vague which makes it hard to tell exact locations and lets the
reader form their own, personalized visualization of the area; likewise, the role of nature in the lives of
the Anglo Saxon culture and Pagan religion remain unclear at best. Provided with many images of
nature in Beowulf, this analysis will extract a deeper understanding of how the Anglo Saxons used
their Paganistic view of nature to help shape Beowulf.
Firstly, the extents of this argument, as well as the views Pagans hold, should be explained plainly and
defined thoroughly in order to provide the necessary background information and foreknowledge this
analysis requires. Overall, there are many ways to practice Paganism, but one detail of this religion
remains true for all: nature is sacred and must be mystical because nature is connected to the spiritual
realm of the gods. Jolly, in her essay Father God and Mother Earth: Nature Mysticism in the Anglo
Saxon World, says, nature communicated God s messages to humans, and humans had the ability to
command nature (230, 37). Thusly,

Papa John s Case Study Essays

mature market and was able to enjoy immense growth and success due to its creative product
differentiation strategy. The company s motto has been consistent from the day the first restaurant was
opened: Superior ingredients and a superior product from its competitors. John Schnatter took the
basic concept of product differentiation and positioning to new heights as he created a strong global
brand, which had an unprecedented track record of success and customer loyalty over its competitor s
pizza products.

Buyers: While the original strategy was to offer only high quality pizza, customer preferences began
to shift gradually which required expanded menu options for items to complement pizza such as
desserts and other creative menu items. Declining sales in the quick service and sit down restaurant
dining increased the propensity for people to cook more meals at home as well.
Substitutes: The quality of substitutes for pizza (frozen pizza and other cheaper alternative brands) had
also evolved to a point to which the additional price for consumers to pay a premium for Papa John s
pizza pies was being questioned.
Volatility in pricing of key Ingredients: The volatility in the price of cheese is mentioned in the case as
a key factor that caused major problems for Papa John s as it contributed to as much as 40% of a
location s ingredient costs.
Papa John s Strategy: Differentiation via Product over Price
As mentioned earlier, the pizza market was already a mature market at the time Papa John s opened its
first store in Indiana in 1985. In such conditions where competition is fierce, most entrants choose to
compete on price in order to achieve growth and capture market share. From the beginning, Papa John
s chose to compete on quality, customer service, and creative marketing a stark contrast with its
competition that were largely differentiating on price.

Democracy Essay
Democracy has become the most widespread political form of government during the past decade,
after the fall of all its alternatives. During the second part of the 20th century, the 3 main enemies of
democracy, namely communism, fascism and Nazism, lost most of their power and influence.
However, democracy is still only to be found in less than half of this world s countries. China with a
fifth of the total population had never experienced a democratic government and Russia still doesn t
have a well established democracy. By adopting a democratic perspective, 3 types of governments
emerge, non democratic, new democracies, and old democracies, and all have a different challenge to

The whole Athenian experience shaped the political philosophy, even the way we understand it today.
At the centre of the Athenian government was an assembly, which every citizen was able to attend.
The role of this assembly was to select citizens for public duties. Whereas key positions were selected
through election, other public duties were decided by lottery. Although this is the first record attempt
of democracy, many of the ideas of that time have been ignored, when talking about modern
democratic governments. Concomitant with the Athenian system, in the city of Rome popular
government was introduced as well, albeit under a different name, respublica (from res – thing and
publicus – public). Consequently the republic was similar with Greek demokratia. At the beginning
only aristocrats or patricians were allowed to participate at the governing act, but after much struggle
the common people [ .] also gained entry (Dahl, 1998: 13). Only male patricians, later lower castes
as well, were able to govern, meaning that women, same as in Athens, were denied any political
rights. Starting as a city state, the Roman Republic conquered territories far beyond its initial borders
and gave Roman citizenship to the conquered people. Even though this system might seem sturdy, the
impossibility to adjust the institutions of popular government to the increasing number of citizens and

Being A Stay At Home Mom
Before we began to build our family, my husband and I were both working full time jobs at an
upwards of 60 hours a week. This was practical at the time, but I knew I could not continue to do so
with an infant. This led me to leave my job of 3 years just before giving birth. After a few months, I
debated long and hard on returning to work. After very careful consideration, I decided the best thing
to do for everyone would be for me to stay home. I knew that being a stay at home mom would be
hard. More importantly, I also knew that my daughter needed me to be there for her. It helped me learn
that the plan you may have for yourself may not be the best plan for everyone else; being able to
compromise for loved ones is always important. When I got married, I was working as a federal
contractor for a company that conducted background investigations. The days were very long, some at
10 hours, most at 12. My husband worked at the same company, so we were on the same schedule.
This worked well for us, but as we started to discuss building our family, I began to wonder if this

Once I became pregnant, it slowly became evident I could not continue such crazy schedules. I moved

Value of Education
Value of Education In his essay Is College Worth the Money? , Daniel S. Cheever, Jr. contends that,
The real question is whether students are getting their money s worth (102). He emphasizes the value
of education and not only the cost. Higher education is the focus of Cheever s essay, but I believe the
same question of worth can be asked concerning elementary through high school education as well.
Both public and private schools offer distinctive educational opportunities and each individual needs
to resolve the question of value. There are many facets that give value to an education; however, the
cost cannot be ignored. Parents make the initial choices for their children s education. The choice is
primarily based on economics, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Our school included them in the extra curricular activities offered which provided an avenue for
greater social interaction. Nevertheless, there appears to be value in the customized approach to
education that home schooling allows. Another aspect of valuing an education, in particular a college
education, is a monetary one. The earnings potential of receiving a college degree drives many
students to pursue a post secondary education. Cheever points out that college graduates are likely to
make much more money in their lifetimes than those with only a high school education (103). One
thing that needs to be factored into that calculation though is the amount of debt a student will have to
repay after graduating. Student loans usually have a 5% to 6% interest rate that adds up through the
years. For example, one of my cousins who graduated from college in 2000 is still repaying student
loans. Even though they may be earning a decent salary, in our current economy, it may make it more
difficult for a college graduate to purchase a home, have a family or save for retirement when
overloaded with educational debt. This issue makes a case that the cost of education may be too high
for those that cannot pay the tuition without going into debt. Students and parents should be expected
to pay for the largest portion of a college education; however, the costs need to be less

everything to be perfect. Always in back of my mind was to have a healthy and safe pregnancy and
baby. But with my history I was considered high risk. It was my 23rd birthday, my first ultrasound. It

nerves unsettling. Finally the nurse comes in the room. She puts the camera on the right side of my
stomach, and I see my baby. She moves the camera to the left side, I see the baby again. Thinking to
myself wow that baby moved fast. But then she moved the camera to the middle of my stomach, my
heart went from barely pounding to about to beat out my chest. I was having twins, they were laying
on top of each other like the Ying yang sign. Now the real journey begins. I was working and visiting
the doctor every two weeks. One week was just to check my weight, blood pressure, checking babies,
heart rates, and measuring my stomach. The other was an ultrasound to check on babies and to check

Medieval Weapons
From the beginning, there has always been a need to protect ourselves from combat and other
dangerous situations. From the simple shields and breastplates in the middle ages to the more complex
and more advanced body armor we use today that requires research by scientists and engineers. War
was not always charging into battle with guns and tanks. Battles were simple with the main weapons
being swords and knifes. Today we need it to protect us from other things like guns or explosives. One
of the earliest forms of armor used was animals. They used the pelts or hides and fur, not for
protecting you in battle, but more for protecting you from the obstacles of the wilderness. They used
these items like a coat to keep your body warm from the cold weather. They also used them to provide
protection while hunting or exploring. It protected them from scratches, bruises, hypothermia, etc.

Online Dating Vs. Internet

Online Dating Online dating is one of the most over hyped and probably one of the worst places to
find someone to have a romantic relationship with. But, with social networking becoming all the rage,
online dating has become a huge phenomenon that has caught trend nationwide. In todays society it is
considered the norm for human connections to be initiated by internet connections. We live in a
century of emails, text messages, and Facebook friending that has become established as a real
relationship bond. While connecting with friends, family, coworkers, etc. can be easily completed by
the use of the internet, while it is convenient and sometimes the best way, establishing a romantic
connection with someone through the internet seems a bit interpersonal and dangerous. Judging by the
massive amounts of dating apps and websites available, we are desperate to find the one , and fast.
Dating online takes the intimacy out of getting to know someone and its just not natural. Many people
get lost in the idea that on this dating app could be their special one that they will spend the rest of
their life with but they forget that at the same time it presents a grave danger to women and men alike.
Through a profile you can only learn what that person wants you to know and we have no choice to
believe what they are saying is true. Like the MTV show Catfish, this is not always the case. People

One third of the soldiers were drafted, and two thirds of the soldiers were volunteers ( Vietnam War

ninety percent of the women were army nurses ( Women in the Vietnam War ). The American soldiers
had arrived in Vietnam with equipment that wasn t well suited to deal with the brutal jungle climates
of Vietnam. Soldiers, before being shipped out, received standard gear: steel helmets, cotton uniforms,
later nylon uniforms, M 16 rifles, anti personnel fragmentation grenades, claymore anti personnel

Weapons of War , the soldiers had problems with essentially all of their gear. The helmets were
extremely weighty and sweltering, and were often abandoned in favor of floppy, fabric hats. The
cotton uniforms deteriorated in the Vietnam climate. The military tried to fix this problem by
developing clothing that was made with ripstop nylon. However, the solution didn t have the outcome

Gender, Ethnicity, And Social Class
Roles of Sexuality In the 1920s, after slavery was abolished, there was a migration of African
Americans towards the North, especially into urban areas closer proximity to white neighborhoods. A
popular destination was Harlem, New York. United States went through an era known as the Harlem
Renaissance were African American voices were being heard in a new, unexplored light. Passing was
a recurring theme that was used through most literature and film by most African Americans. Passing
is referred to the capability of one to be considered as a member of social groups other than his/her
own, such as race, gender, ethnicity, and social class, with the intention of achieving social acceptance.
Nella Larsen s novel Passing uses the theme to describe a biracial character blending into the white
race through times when legal and social traditions classified the person as Black. When Larsen wrote
the novel, racial discrimination existed and so did the discrimination for those who were homosexual.
Most readers overlooked the subversive message of the role of sexuality that is written throughout the
novel. Larsen shows the homosexual desire both between Irene and Clare and also in Brian. As the
reader is focused on the theme of the novel of passing as another race and trying to be accepted. Its
difficult to deny the possibility of Irene s subliminal attraction to Clare. From the beginning of the
novel, Irene seems fascinated, sometimes entranced, by Clare s appearance. For

Pape s control his poem by emphasizing the imagery and sounds used. An owl calls across the

Wisdom In Plato s Apology
Ignorance isn t something that someone inherits from the moment they are born. Humans do not enter
the world with the wisdom to make the correct choices in life, but they do gain the ability to acquire
wisdom through teaching, learning and learning from their mistakes. This lack of wisdom, this
inherent ignorance is exactly why there has been a struggle since the beginning of man. According to
Plato, this is the best thing for human life is wisdom. Plato s Socrates indicates that wisdom is the
acknowledgement of ignorance. This statement may be hard to prove as true. In the Apology, Socrates
says that What is probable, gentlemen, is the fact that the god is wise and that his oracular response
meant that human wisdom is worth little or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Socrates look like he is overshadowing his own ignorance as some kind of wisdom . Socrates actual
quote indicates that he knew when others were ignorant, but merely thought they were knowledgeable.
He simply never made the mistakes of either by overestimating his extremely limited knowledge of or
really underestimating his actual knowledge. That made him a lifelong learner and wiser than those
who thought they knew what they did not know. This goes back to the argument that Plato makes that
taking a risk with your wisdom whether it s ignorant or not is worth more than sitting there and
basically looking stupid. In comparison of today s culture would it make any sense the youth holds the
majority of ignorance more than past generation I would bet to say that Plato would agree with this
statement. Most of the youth are preoccupied by social media and electronic devices that they never
have the time anymore to look up from their phone and hold a full conversation. The toxic
combination of government lacking public education, extremely unprepared curriculum to
unmotivated and unambitious student have produced a generation of young people ignorant of the
fundamental parts of life. They have been taught to feel rather than think critically. It draws back to
my point that when you think you know something that you do not know, you rest content

The Effect Of Peroxidase Production On Stressed Plants Essay
This experiment used beets to determine peroxidase production in stressed plants. The purpose of this
experiment was to test if the stressed plant would produce more peroxidase in a higher concentration
than the control plant. The stressor for this experiment was watering with salt water. This stressor was
chosen because it is a natural stressor to plants; especially along the coasts and where roads are salted
in winter such as the Midwest. The control plant was watered with plain tap water while the
experimental plant was watered with tap water plus salt. The salt water concentration was 1.2341
molar. After the two week stress period the stressed plant was much smaller, wilted, and shriveled
compared to the control plant. It also had less water content overall, which made the extraction
process somewhat more challenging. To test the peroxidase production in the plants several methods
were used, including: tissue printing, DOT blot assay, electrophoretic analysis, and a
spectrophotometric assay. It was concluded that the stressed plant did produce more peroxidase than
the control plant and in a higher concentration.
Peroxidase Production in Beets Stressed with Salt Water
There are many types of peroxidases found in plants, animals, and microorganisms. The plant
peroxidase that was studied in this lab is the class III plant peroxidase (POX) (Hiraga, Sasaki, Ito,
Ohashi, Matsui, 2001). Other studies have made it known that POXs participate in lignification,
suberization,

The Story Of An Hour And The Awakening
Morgan Roney
Doctor Laura Buchholz

ENG 112L
Final Paper
This paper will examine the life of Kate Chopin along with her writing style and theme in The Story
of an Hour and The Awakening. Chopin has a unique writing style that shows throughout all of her
works. Her works carry similar themes that include: women in search of independence, negative views
of marriage, and self assertion. While reading Chopin s work, the reader will conclude that Chopin s
writing is very inspiring because she incorporates obstacles that she faced throughout her life. With
this technique used, it is easier for the reader to connect with Chopin on a personal level while reading
her works.
To begin, Kate Chopin was born on February 8, 1850 with the ... Show more content on

Chopin began her education at a Catholic School called the Sacred Heart Academy. Her school was
...devoted to creating good wives and mothers, while also teaching independent thinking (Jones). Kate
Chopin experienced many more tough times with the loss of her great grandmother, her brother, her
first teacher, and her best friend moving away. Because she grew up during the time of the Civil War,
Chopin spent much of her time at home (Jones). She experienced violence at first hand when her
home was raided by German soldiers, and it is believed that she was sexually abused in the process.
After she was believed to be sexually abused, Chopin began to isolate herself from everything. She
spent a lot of her time reading, writing, and thinking in the attic by herself ( Kate ). After experiencing
such rough times, Chopin went back to Sacred Heart Academy where she was encouraged by her
English teacher to begin writing. After graduating she met Oscar Chopin, ...a businessperson of
cosmopolitan background (Jones). At the age of 20, they got married and in their first ten years of
marriage Chopin birthed six children. With the death of her husband in 1884, Chopin was left to take
care of the family financially. After going into a huge amount of debt, Chopin moved to St. Louis with
her mother and turned to her passion of writing as a way to make money (Toth 101). In 1885, Chopin
dealt with the loss of her mother

Reflection Paper On Group Interaction
REFLECTION PAPER
Identified Experience
The group member I identified most with was Andrew in the first program. I identified with Andrew
because he stated he felt like an outsider at times. He felt that it was easier to talk with men than
women. However, in my case, I feel as though it is easier to talk with women than men in a group.
Overall, I feel hesitant to share because most of my group participation has been with practically
strangers. Like the video, I believe it is difficult to talk out loud about personal issues. Talking out
loud about issues that may cause anxiety has been a problem for me personally for many years.
However, after dialoguing with others within groups, I tend to become more comfortable talking and
opening up. In the first program, as the group members began to talk in the first segment, there was a
difference in the ability to relate to each other. I believe the dyads influenced open up and talking out
loud. Working in pairs facilitates member interaction because talking to one person seems less
threatening than addressing the entire group (p. 18). At the beginning of the sessions the group leaders
asked each member to look around the room to gain a feel of the group members. The purpose of
assessing the tone of the room will create an awareness of everyone in the room. Also, everyone
introduced themselves by saying their names.
During the early part of the group interactions, Andrew identified with James as feeling like an
outsider. I believe at this time was the beginning if Andrew doing the work. The group leader asked
Andrew can he relate to anyone else in the group. Nobody knows what it feels like to be the other
person. The only way to express how I feel would be to realize within discussion and verbalize my
feelings. We do not assume that we know what being an outsider means to Andrew or James, nor do
we know what feeling stupid is like for Jacqueline, so we ask all three of them to note and verbalize
when they become aware of these feelings (p. 17). Throughout this session each members were
encouraged to talk out loud to verbalized related issues. I believe the entire session is a process of
doing the work. As I watched the video of the first

Masculinity In Football
Within American culture and society professional sports, especially football, has always been a major
component. It has been used for entertainment as well as promoting and encouraging qualities and
values in those who play like good sportsmanship and how to work as a team. But is that the only
thing it promotes? Football is essentially a battle to obtain power over the other team using strength
and knowledge in order to win fame and money. In order to gain power one must be stronger, more
masculine, and in most cases more violent. While football does reflect many great ideals about our
society it also reflects back to us many negative ideals. Football reflects back to us and even
determines our ideas that sovereign power is only attainable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This shaming allows the players to begin to question their masculinity and creates the idea that they
re, quote on quote, feminine . This shifts their playing style to instead of thinking through the
difficulties and questioning things, to reacting to the shame in quick bursts of thoughtless behavior
and aggression. This plays into the idea that femininity does not create strong people and results in
sexism within our society. This use of shame is not only just individually but also is used against the
team as a whole and creates a false perception of how to encourage the right behavior. Shame feeds
off the idea of guilt as an encourager rather than the idea to persevere and win from hard work and
knowledge. This shaming can be seen in other instances like in schools, in the business world, and
even against women who have been sexually assaulted. We begin to believe and expect that shaming
someone will increase the likelihood that people will change and begin to win , when that s not always

  • 2. Mandatory Conscription In The Military 1. Attention Getter: 1. Mandatory conscription has left a bad taste in the mouths of Americans since the Vietnam War. In modern day society, it can be seen as slavery and Americans today have become accustomed to the voluntary army system we currently have. For some, the perceived loss of freedom also means not being able to achieve educational and occupational goals, but that is definitely not the case. 2. Reason to Listen: 1. In fact, there are many educational and occupational benefits for American soldiers. Many citizens of the United States today do not know about these benefits. It is safer for the environment and is a cleaner version of diesel. It is made from soybeans and other vegetation. It is made with a process called transesterification it seperates glycerin from fat or oil and then methyl esters and glycerin is what is left over and used for the fuel. Biodiesel had its origins with the invention of the diesel engine, as the diesel engine was designed to run on Biodiesel. Rudolf Diesel was the inventor of the Diesel engine. A lot of the crops are home grown in the united states so, we wouldn t have to depend on other countries for stuff to make fuels out of. Some draw backs to biodiesel is that it is more expensive to produce than petroleum based diesel fuel, and can degrade rubber fuel lines on older engines and reduces the life of the rubber lines. Biodiesel on a wider scale can turn crops into cash crops and reduce the amount of crops for food. Most diesel engines can run off of biodiesel which means a lot of vehicles wont have to be altered to use biodiesel instead of petroleum based diesel fuel. That means they are easy to use but can sometimes be hard to find. Biodiesel affects society today, because big businesses can use them to have greener vehicles and burn the fuel cleaner to help the environment and can keep people from having respiratory problems because of the less pollution. It can also help on the economy because you can use used vegetable oil from fast food restraunts. Therefore biodiesel has pros and cons to it. It can cut down pollutions and the use of petroleum based diesel fuel, and the dependence on other countries for petroleum. But also, it can be more expensive to produce and can cut away at our crops for foods. These technological advances in fuel can help the environment and reduce on pollutions which is a big deal these days. Petroleum is not a renewable resource, but this organic vegetation is. For Bourdieu social capital forms a part of an overarching theory of fields , capital and their relation to class reproduction. Thirdly, I will address the ramifications of such differenced in terms of later attempts to use these two theoretical approaches in empirical testing and practice, arguing that whilst Coleman s approach may seem more attractive, being inherently more testable and applicable, it is in fact fraught with ambiguities and inconsistencies, many of which Bourdieu s perhaps more challenging theory manages to avoid. It would firstly seem important to compare the two definitions of social capital offered by Bourdieu and Coleman. Bourdieu defines the concept as, the aggregate of the actual or potential resources which are linked to possession of a durable network of more or less institutionalised relationships of mutual acquaintance or recognition. (1985 p.248). Coleman, however defined social capital by its function as a variety of entities with two elements in common: They all consist of some aspect of social structures, and they facilitate certain action of actors whether persons or corporate actors within the structure. How Did Samuel De Champlain Influence French Culture The influence of French culture within Canada has a rich history that can only be attributed to one man, Samuel de Champlain who not only shaped the history of France but of Canada as well. The 1609 expedition of Samuel de Champlain was conceived from his want to explore and colonize Quebec, but was supported because of political and economic gains that were to be had by the French bourgeoisie from an established fur trade. There were many arguments that broke out between the wealthy investors of Champlain s expedition whom sought to monopolize the fur trade individually. This led to Champlain going back to Canada to create better ties with the Aboriginal peoples of Quebec in order to ensure that they would supply beaver pelts that he could give to his investors who would sell them in France (Wilson, 2013; Champlain, Samuel de, 2016). This shows that while Samuel de Champlain s expeditions were meant to focus around the colonization of eastern Canada, many investors of his exploration just sought to gain even more power and money by monopolizing the fur trade and becoming wealthy off of it. While the interests of the French elite were at the heart of Champlain s expedition, this very fact was the reason that he decided to make good relations with the native peoples of Quebec (save for the Iroquois who he not on good terms with [Monette, 2016; Wikipedia, 2016]), as they would supply him with furs for that reason ( Champlain, Samuel de, 2016) . The majority of the conflict was conducted within the region of Manchuria, however, several naval battles occurred within the Yellow Sea as well as in Tsushima Strait (the sea area between the southeastern Korean Peninsula and the southwestern portion of Japan). 2. The principle parties in this war were the Russian and Japanese Empires. While various aspects of the Chinese Empire played their roles in the lead up to the conflict they did not, however, side with either of the two warring Empires during the war. Russia did have an alliance of sorts with France and Germany, however, this advantage in numbers was negated due to Japan s formal alliance with Great Britain, who declared support for Japan should a third party become involved in a conflict. 3. The main theme for the context of this war was Russian and Japanese simultaneous determination to develop spheres of influence in eastern Asia, primarily within the nation of China and specifically within the region of Manchuria. The descriptions of nature are general and vague which makes it hard to tell exact locations and lets the reader form their own, personalized visualization of the area; likewise, the role of nature in the lives of the Anglo Saxon culture and Pagan religion remain unclear at best. At the centre of the Athenian government was an assembly, which every citizen was able to attend. The role of this assembly was to select citizens for public duties. Whereas key positions were selected through election, other public duties were decided by lottery. Although this is the first record attempt of democracy, many of the ideas of that time have been ignored, when talking about modern democratic governments. Concomitant with the Athenian system, in the city of Rome popular government was introduced as well, albeit under a different name, respublica (from res – thing and publicus – public). Consequently the republic was similar with Greek demokratia. At the beginning only aristocrats or patricians were allowed to participate at the governing act, but after much struggle the common people [ .] also gained entry (Dahl, 1998: 13). Another aspect of valuing an education, in particular a college education, is a monetary one. The earnings potential of receiving a college degree drives many students to pursue a post secondary education. Cheever points out that college graduates are likely to make much more money in their lifetimes than those with only a high school education (103). One thing that needs to be factored into that calculation though is the amount of debt a student will have to repay after graduating. Student loans usually have a 5% to 6% interest rate that adds up through the years. For example, one of my cousins who graduated from college in 2000 is still repaying student loans. Even though they may be earning a decent salary, in our current economy, it may make it more difficult for a college graduate to purchase a home, have a family or save for retirement when overloaded with educational debt. This issue makes a case that the cost of education may be too high for those that cannot pay the tuition without going into debt. The purpose of this experiment was to test if the stressed plant would produce more peroxidase in a higher concentration than the control plant. The stressor for this experiment was watering with salt water. This stressor was chosen because it is a natural stressor to plants; especially along the coasts and where roads are salted in winter such as the Midwest. The control plant was watered with plain tap water while the experimental plant was watered with tap water plus salt. The salt water concentration was 1.2341 molar. After the two week stress period the stressed plant was much smaller, wilted, and shriveled compared to the control plant. It also had less water content overall, which made the extraction process somewhat more challenging. To test the peroxidase production in the plants several methods were used, including: tissue printing, DOT blot assay, electrophoretic analysis, and a spectrophotometric assay. • 43. The Story Of An Hour And The Awakening Morgan Roney Doctor Laura Buchholz April 14, 2015 ENG 112L Final Paper This paper will examine the life of Kate Chopin along with her writing style and theme in The Story of an Hour and The Awakening. Chopin has a unique writing style that shows throughout all of her works. Her works carry similar themes that include: women in search of independence, negative views of marriage, and self assertion. While reading Chopin s work, the reader will conclude that Chopin s writing is very inspiring because she incorporates obstacles that she faced throughout her life. With this technique used, it is easier for the reader to connect with Chopin on a personal level while reading her works. To begin, Kate Chopin was born on February 8, 1850 with the ... Her school was ...devoted to creating good wives and mothers, while also teaching independent thinking (Jones). Kate Chopin experienced many more tough times with the loss of her great grandmother, her brother, her first teacher, and her best friend moving away. Because she grew up during the time of the Civil War, Chopin spent much of her time at home (Jones). She experienced violence at first hand when her home was raided by German soldiers, and it is believed that she was sexually abused in the process. After she was believed to be sexually abused, Chopin began to isolate herself from everything. She spent a lot of her time reading, writing, and thinking in the attic by herself ( Kate ). After experiencing such rough times, Chopin went back to Sacred Heart Academy where she was encouraged by her English teacher to begin writing. After graduating she met Oscar Chopin, ...a businessperson of cosmopolitan background (Jones). At the age of 20, they got married and in their first ten years of marriage Chopin birthed six children. With the death of her husband in 1884, Chopin was left to take care of the family financially. • 44. Reflection Paper On Group Interaction REFLECTION PAPER Identified Experience The group member I identified most with was Andrew in the first program. I identified with Andrew because he stated he felt like an outsider at times. He felt that it was easier to talk with men than women. However, in my case, I feel as though it is easier to talk with women than men in a group. Overall, I feel hesitant to share because most of my group participation has been with practically strangers. Like the video, I believe it is difficult to talk out loud about personal issues. Talking out loud about issues that may cause anxiety has been a problem for me personally for many years. However, after dialoguing with others within groups, I tend to become more comfortable talking and opening up. In the first program, as the group members began to talk in the first segment, there was a difference in the ability to relate to each other. I believe the dyads influenced open up and talking out loud. Working in pairs facilitates member interaction because talking to one person seems less threatening than addressing the entire group (p. 18). At the beginning of the sessions the group leaders asked each member to look around the room to gain a feel of the group members. The purpose of assessing the tone of the room will create an awareness of everyone in the room. Also, everyone introduced themselves by saying their names. During the early part of the group interactions, Andrew identified with James as feeling like an outsider. I believe at this time was the beginning if Andrew doing the work. The group leader asked Andrew can he relate to anyone else in the group. Nobody knows what it feels like to be the other person. The only way to express how I feel would be to realize within discussion and verbalize my feelings. We do not assume that we know what being an outsider means to Andrew or James, nor do we know what feeling stupid is like for Jacqueline, so we ask all three of them to note and verbalize when they become aware of these feelings (p. 17). Throughout this session each members were encouraged to talk out loud to verbalized related issues. I believe the entire session is a process of doing the work. As I watched the video of the first ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Masculinity In Football Within American culture and society professional sports, especially football, has always been a major component. It has been used for entertainment as well as promoting and encouraging qualities and values in those who play like good sportsmanship and how to work as a team. But is that the only thing it promotes? Football is essentially a battle to obtain power over the other team using strength and knowledge in order to win fame and money. In order to gain power one must be stronger, more masculine, and in most cases more violent. While football does reflect many great ideals about our society it also reflects back to us many negative ideals. Football reflects back to us and even determines our ideas that sovereign power is only attainable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This shaming allows the players to begin to question their masculinity and creates the idea that they re, quote on quote, feminine . This shifts their playing style to instead of thinking through the difficulties and questioning things, to reacting to the shame in quick bursts of thoughtless behavior and aggression. This plays into the idea that femininity does not create strong people and results in sexism within our society. This use of shame is not only just individually but also is used against the team as a whole and creates a false perception of how to encourage the right behavior. Shame feeds off the idea of guilt as an encourager rather than the idea to persevere and win from hard work and knowledge. This shaming can be seen in other instances like in schools, in the business world, and even against women who have been sexually assaulted. We begin to believe and expect that shaming someone will increase the likelihood that people will change and begin to win , when that s not always the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
