This guide is intended for PhD students and early career researchers to help them comprehend the various types of peer-review processes involved in journal publishing.
Peer review process is the system used to assess the quality of a manuscript before it is published online. Independent professionals/experts/researchers in the relevant research area are subjected to assess the submitted manuscripts for originality, validity and significance to help editors determine whether a manuscript should be published in their journal.
This Peer review process helps in validating the research works, establish a method by which it can be evaluated and increase networking possibilities within research communities. Despite criticisms, peer review is still the only widely accepted method for research validation
The peer review process begins when you submit your manuscript to a journal. Following submission, your article will be evaluated by independent experts in your area. The reviewers will judge your work’s legitimacy, importance, and originality.

This document proposes a method for automatically assigning conference papers to reviewers based on the matching degree between reviewers and papers. It combines a preference-based approach using reviewers' expertise with a topic-based approach using the relevance of references between papers and reviewers' previous work. The method models reviewers based on expertise degree calculated from publications and relevance degree calculated from common references between papers and reviewers. It then calculates an overall matching degree and uses this in an assignment algorithm to assign papers to reviewers while balancing loads. The approach aims to make the paper assignment task more effective and reduce loads on program committees and reviewers compared to existing methods.

The Rise of DIY Open Access Journals: Why and HowScholastica
The academic community has traditionally relied on corporate publishers to produce scholarly journals. But today, that's all changing as scholars embrace online tools to publish journals on their own - and for good reason. With some publishers instituting article processing charges (APCs) for OA articles in the thousands of dollars, there is risk of the serials crisis being replaced with an APC funding emergency. It’s vital that the academic community start to take back control of the cost of research and DIY journals are one of the most direct solutions.
This presentation overviews the rise in DIY open access journal publishing and:
- Examples of DIY open access journals
- The benefits of DIY journal publishing
- Tips and tools for efficient and affordable OA publishing
The document discusses different types of library sources for research, including scholarly journals, trade journals, and technical reports. It explains the importance of peer review in evaluating the credibility of scholarly sources. Tips are provided on how to search academic databases and conduct research after graduation, such as using open access journals, institutional repositories, or resources through an employer.
Recommender systems are software tools and techniques providing suggestions for items to be of interest to a user. Recommender systems have proved in recent years to be a valuable means of helping Web users by providing useful and effective recommendations or suggestions.
The document discusses criteria for selecting the best journal to publish research manuscripts. Key criteria include the journal's impact factor, peer review process, author rights policies, business model, reputation, indexing in databases, scope, ethics guidelines, instructions for authors, and editorial board. Considering these factors will help researchers choose a journal that is a good fit for their research and increases the visibility and reach of their published work.

A recommender system helps users deal with large numbers of alternatives by providing personalized recommendations. Collaborative filtering is a common approach that recommends items liked by similar users. It works by finding users with similar rating patterns to the active user and using the ratings from those similar users to calculate predictions. Content-based filtering recommends items similar to those a user liked in the past based on item descriptions and the user's profile and interaction history. Most modern recommender systems use a hybrid approach combining collaborative, content-based, and other techniques.
This study evaluated 68 reviewers of the Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences to analyze their characteristics and the quality of their reviews. The majority of reviewers were between 40-60 years old, affiliated with academic institutions, and had attended peer review workshops. Based on consistency and quality, 15 reviewers were rated excellent, 33 good, and 20 average. The best reviewers were retired medical teachers over 60 years old, those in private practice over 60 interested in academics, and those exposed to peer review training. While affiliation with academic institutions did not impact review quality, training workshops significantly improved reviews. The study aims to help editors identify high-quality reviewers and improve manuscript and journal standards.
This document discusses impact factors and identification tools for scholars. It explains that impact factors and tools like ORCID, Google Scholar Citations, and ResearcherID allow scholars to track their work, make it accessible to others, and remain identifiable even if their institutional affiliation changes. Journal impact factors measure how often journals are cited, helping identify important publications. Researcher impact can be measured by citation analysis tools in Scopus and Google Scholar, including the h-index. Tracking impact and citations showcases work, allows benchmarking against peers, and helps scholars network and control their online presence. However, citation metrics do not necessarily reflect quality and may be skewed in some fields or for certain types of publications.

A LOCATION-BASED RECOMMENDER SYSTEM FRAMEWORK TO IMPROVE ACCURACY IN USERBASE...ijcsa
This document proposes a framework to improve the accuracy of recommendations in collaborative filtering recommender systems by considering users' locations. The framework enhances traditional collaborative filtering in several ways: 1) It increases the similarity score of users located in the same place as the active user; 2) It filters peers to remove non-related users; 3) It selects the top peers and recommends items based on those peers' ratings. The framework aims to provide more local recommendations by incorporating geographic location data throughout the recommendation process.

Good Citation Behaviour: Avoiding Citation ManipulationSarasadat Makian
In September 2022, I took a “Good Citation Behaviour” course by Clarivate
(Web of Science) aimed at early career researchers. There was a topic on citation manipulation and its implications in research.
I wanted to share some key takeaways from the course, which I believe are valuable to fellow researchers and anyone who appreciates the importance of accurate and ethical information dissemination.
💡 I found this course immensely beneficial, shedding light on the importance of proper referencing and the risks of citation manipulation in the academic community. I encourage Ph.D. students and early career researchers to take this course to learn more about citation manipulation and how to prevent it.
Understanding published papers licensing: Copyrights and Creative Commons for...Sarasadat Makian
As a Ph.D. student, I've learned that understanding copyright licenses is crucial in the world of academic publishing.
When it comes to using papers that have been published, the type of license associated with the paper can have a significant impact on what you can and cannot do with the content.
Discussing the themes identified from a thematic analysis of previous studies involves a systematic and organized approach to presenting and interpreting the findings. In this post, I'll share with you a roadmap to deal with the thematic analysis process I used for my doctoral research.
Thematic analysis enables us to unearth hidden insights, decipher patterns, and extract meaning from the data we collect.

How to Make a Field Mandatory in Odoo 17Celine George
In Odoo, making a field required can be done through both Python code and XML views. When you set the required attribute to True in Python code, it makes the field required across all views where it's used. Conversely, when you set the required attribute in XML views, it makes the field required only in the context of that particular view.

This document provides an overview of wound healing, its functions, stages, mechanisms, factors affecting it, and complications.
A wound is a break in the integrity of the skin or tissues, which may be associated with disruption of the structure and function.
Healing is the body’s response to injury in an attempt to restore normal structure and functions.
Healing can occur in two ways: Regeneration and Repair
There are 4 phases of wound healing: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. This document also describes the mechanism of wound healing. Factors that affect healing include infection, uncontrolled diabetes, poor nutrition, age, anemia, the presence of foreign bodies, etc.
Complications of wound healing like infection, hyperpigmentation of scar, contractures, and keloid formation.
This presentation includes basic of PCOS their pathology and treatment and also Ayurveda correlation of PCOS and Ayurvedic line of treatment mentioned in classics.
2. Sarasadat Makian
Single-Blind Peer Review:
In this traditional approach, the
reviewer knows the identity of the
author, but the author remains
unaware of the reviewer's identity.
This method aims to maintain the
impartiality of the reviewer.
3. Sarasadat Makian
Double-Blind Peer Review:
In this model, both the author and
the reviewer remain anonymous to
each other. It minimizes biases
related to the author's reputation,
gender, or affiliation and is widely
considered a gold standard for
objective evaluation.
4. Sarasadat Makian
Triple-blind peer review:
This is a variant of the double-blind
peer review process. In this
process, the identity of not only the
authors, but also the editors
handling the manuscript, is
concealed from the reviewers. In
addition, the identity of the
reviewers is concealed from the
authors.
5. Sarasadat Makian
Open Peer Review:
This model is characterized by
transparency, where the reviewer's
and author's identities are known to
each other. This approach can
promote a constructive dialogue
between authors and reviewers
and may enhance accountability.
6. Sarasadat Makian
Post-Publication Peer Review:
Some journals opt for publishing
research immediately and then
allowing peer review to happen post-
publication. This model encourages
community involvement and scrutiny,
but it also requires robust and
efficient mechanisms for updating
and revising published work.
7. Sarasadat Makian
Collaborative Peer Review:
This emerging model involves
multiple reviewers working
together on a manuscript. It can
help to reduce individual biases and
provide a more holistic evaluation.
8. Sarasadat Makian
Pre-Print Peer Review:
With the rise of pre-print servers,
peer review can occur before
formal submission to a journal.
Authors can receive feedback and
improve their work before seeking
publication.
9. Sarasadat Makian
Collaborative Peer Review
Platforms:
There are platforms where
researchers can post their work
for open feedback and peer review
before submitting it to a journal.
Examples include PubPeer and
F1000Research.
10. Sarasadat Makian
Machine learning-assisted
peer review:
In some cases, machine learning
algorithms are used to help with the
initial selection and matching of
manuscripts with reviewers,
streamlining the process.
