An aircraft is considered stable if it returns to its initial equilibrium flight conditions when disturbed, while instability can cause the aircraft to either uniformly depart from or oscillate about the equilibrium state with increasing amplitude. There are two types of aircraft control - one that moves the aircraft between stable equilibrium states and another that takes the aircraft into an accelerating non-equilibrium state, with control being opposed to stability.
