Unnatural Thankfulness In Nicaragua
A wave of joy and laughter dances around me as I sit with what seems to be an endless amount
of animated children. One child laughs and cries, friends are not food! , as his friend playfully
pretends to eat his arm. I join the children in amusement then to comment, Friends are not food,
like in the movie Nemo remember? Friends are not food, oo ha ha . I began to laugh expectant of
the children to join, only to find blank stares and confused expressions. I quickly realize that they
aren t laughing because it s not funny, but because they have never seen the movie Nemo. Although
being a classic in the United States, these Nicaraguan children have no more than a pair of clothes
and a blanket for the night, so the treat of seeing a movie, such... Show more content on

I complained less, for my worst conditions here at home would be lavish living to those in
Nicaragua. It s unfortunate that to simply become grateful I had to travel to a third world
country and live with the poorest of the poor. This dilemma of unnatural thankfulness is a
problem I find only in those who have everything they could ever want or need. I became angry
at school when kids complained about seemingly insignificant things. I would think to myself,
that chicken you refuse to eat because it is too cold is a sandwich a child in Nicaragua would
beg on their knees to eat. This complete awareness of the world around me and my petty culture
only came to me because of a mission trip I took to a poor country named Nicaragua for one
week of my summer. It took only one week of my summer in a country solely built on love,
compassion and content to transform my critical attitude to that of thankfulness. It took only one
week of my summer to begin appreciating things of little relevance in our fast pace and chaotic
culture. It took only one week of my summer to force me to be aware of others and express love
and kindness to even those who don t deserve it. It took only one week of my summer to fix me,

Johann Sebastian Bach Impact
Johann Sebastian Bach is primarily known for being an outstanding organist and virtuosic. He
was a German composer in the baroque period. The baroque period is the time where human
emotions start to influence music and is often associated with being romantic. Bach was
regarded in his time as an extremist because he had great detail in his pieces. In his 65 years of
life, he wrote over 1,000 compositions. Bach s most famous works include Toccata and Fugue in
D minor, The Well Tempered Clavier, and The Cello Suites. It is safe to say that Bach left an
imprint and is still influential to music all over the world. His pieces are still recognizable and
used in numerous movies. Bach influenced 18th and 19th century composers such as Mozart,
Beethoven, Chopin, and Mendelssohn. Bach has several monuments including the one in Leipzig
built in 1908 that people still frequently visit. Using his talent and skills with music, Bach shared
his love for music and began to make a name for himself. Bach was born Eisenach, Germany, on
March 31, 1685. He came from a multi generation family of musicians. Elizabeth Lämmerhirt
Bach was his mother s name and his father, Johann Ambrosius Bach, was a church organist and
taught young Bach how to play the violin. At age ten, after his mother and father died, Johann
moved to Ohrdruf, Germany and received his first lesson on the keyboard from his brother who
played the organ for St. Michaels Church. From there, Johann got a scholarship for his

The Tooth Fairy Essay
Santa, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, Truth in Parenting
The early childhood years are full of play, pretend and magical thinking. Young children put on
wings and take flight around preschool classrooms. They can be anyone they can imagine
superheroes, princes princesses, mommy, daddy, and even the dog or the cat. The magic will
gradually fade and they may have a few questions for you...
The Shift
Children cannot distinguish the difference between fantasy and reality like adults. They believe
that fantasy can be real because they do not know the limits of reality.[1] This limitless way to
see the world allows them to believe that anything can happen. For example, approximately 65%
of children ages have imaginary friends by the age of 7.[2] They may even get upset when we
forget to buckle their friend into the car. I remember my sister getting very upset when I seemed to
continuously sit on her imaginary friend in our living room. This lack of boundary between fantasy
and reality allows kids to believe in Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny...until they
don t.

Tribulations Of Leaving In James Joyce s Eveline
Tribulations of Leaving Eveline is deeply troubled about whether she should leave or stay. In
Joyce s Eveline there are many reasons that Eveline should leave and just a few big reasons why
she should stay, and the reasons are the way the father treats her, the way she feels obligated to
stay, the unknown things of Eveline leaving ultimately made her not want to leave with frank.
Eveline should leave because of the way the father treats her. Eveline says, Even now, though she
was over nineteen, she sometimes felt herself in danger of her father s violence (Joyce). This
shows that she was terrified that her father was going to beat her. Eveline had two choices which

Even though the kids are not hers it has been made her responsibility to make sure they get to
school regularly which she fears will not happen if she runs off to be with frank. Therefore she
also fears since it was also made her responsibility to make sure they are fed, that no one else will
be their or care enough to make sure they have food cooked for them to eat. Eveline said, She

feels obligated to stay since if she didn t stay no one would be there to help buy and prepare meals
for her father or the rest of the family. It would be hard for her to leave since she feels like she is
the only one that is responsible enough to make sure that the meals get bought and cooked. So
that her father and the two kids can eat, but she feels more obligated to the kids. The unknown

Technology Changes In America
Technology was the highlight of every 7th graders day last year. Technology was interesting and
fun and always taught us something new. We as a class were constantly doing new activities on
the computers, but all that changed this year. Technology was replaced with a special class
named Math lab. At first most of our class knew what to think of what this new special would be.
Yet after the first class it was obvious what Math Lab was. Math lab was a boring, repetitive,
strict class that only minorly strengthens skills in Math that most of both classes already knew. If
we do not bring back technology instead of math lab we may not be able to learn computer skills
that are needed in High School.
If Technology does not come back instead of Math lab we and future 8th graders may not know
skills on the computer needed for high school. When our class enters high school, with
technology as a class gone, we will not know how to use important programs such as PowerPoint
or Microsoft Word. Knoxville Catholic, Farragut High school, and Lenoir City high school have a
computers technology class. They have no Math Lab or computers math class. So what then is the
point of having a class that does not exist in the later grades? If middle school is serving the
purpose of preparing us for high school then shouldn t we mimic the high schools? ... Show more

will improve our understanding and knowledge of Math, and improve our GPA on Math scores

Furthermore the work that we do in Math lab is the opposite of motivating. The work that
remembers is repetitive and boring, makes students not want to study! Math class should be for

catch the fish (White, Page 15). Plants also thrive when they have an abundant amount of water.
Being near water means it does not have to be transported a big distance which is easier on the
person or animal moving the water. The ground is also moister being near since the ground
around it is eroding and absorbing the water. The Fertile Crescent region is where the most fertile
soil was for agricultural use. Plants thrived in this area because of the soil fertility and the amount
of fresh water that was readily available since the Fertile Crescent is located on several important
water features. Having fresh water available, led to wild edible

Rapid Modernisation Of Armed Forces
There are a variety of reasons for the rapid modernisation of armed forces in the Southeast Asia
region interstate and regional tensions exist within Southeast Asia and interactive military
programmes have developed as a result, and there has been a rapid build up of military capabilities.
Additionally, there has been advances in technology, creating a need for states to modernise their
armed forces to be able to compete and military advancement in the region has contributed to the
security dilemma in Southeast Asia, leading to further arms build up. Most importantly, there is
evidence of the beginnings of an arms race in Southeast Asia, which also explains the modernisation
of armed forces. Thus, the reasons for the rapid modernisation of armed forces in the Southeast Asia
region are the consequences of interstate and regional tensions, technological advancement, the
growing security dilemma and the beginning of an arms race.
Interstate and Regional Tensions
Throughout Southeast Asia, there are a number of relationships between state actors that are
marked by mutual distrust, and these bilateral relationships fuel the arms race within Asia due to
security concerns. These distrustful relationships between nations have their root causes in
historical animosities, racial and religious divisions or competition for influence and resources
(Richardson 1990: 24). Problematic relations in the region include, and are not limited to: North
and South Korea, Taiwan and China,

Forbidden Love In William Shakespeare s Romeo And Juliet

has been very sneaky on how he brought in 5 different ways they have shown love. There is
forbidden, romantic, unrequited, parental, and family love. That s so much different ways

do it and what type did he used the most? The first love is the forbidden love. Forbidden love is
where a couple is not allowed to see each because of some family issues with the couple or with
the parents. A example can be seen in Romeo and Juliet, they love each other even though Romeo
knew the risk he still went to see Juliet to look at her one more time before he left.

Increased prices of food, food shortages, and layoffs fueled the anger that Indonesians felt. Because
of the few wealthy Chinese business owners, indigenous Indonesians felt that the Chinese people
controlled the wealth in Indonesia. During these riots, business and homes owned by Chinese

to property damage, Chinese women were a target for brutal rapes and murders. (Turner, 2007)

Shocking Bodies Documentary
Bodies Online Video Essay The documentary, Shocking Bodies Exhibition, was published in 2014,
which mainly discusses a plasticized Body Worlds museum that the public can attend at any time
and then further discusses ethical concerns. This documentary was brought about because 20/20
wanted to investigate more into the plasticized bodies origins. They were curious where the bodies
were coming from and if they were the bodies of executed prisoners. Throughout this paper, two
ethical issues, a theoretical view point, and why I support these exhibits will be further discussed
Two Ethical Issues Theoretical View Point One ethical issue that stands with the BodyWorlds
museum is the fact that people are not one hundred percent sure who these bodies belong to or
where these bodies are exactly coming from, which also includes the manager who originally
obtained these bodies for the museum. One man from China that worked for this Chinese Dalian

Value of Education
Value of Education In his essay Is College Worth the Money? , Daniel S. Cheever, Jr. contends that,
The real question is whether students are getting their money s worth (102). He emphasizes the
value of education and not only the cost. Higher education is the focus of Cheever s essay, but I
believe the same question of worth can be asked concerning elementary through high school
educationas well. Both public and private schools offer distinctive educational opportunities and
each individual needs to resolve the question of value. There are many facets that give value to an
education; however, the cost cannot be ignored. Parents make the initial choices for their children s
education. The choice is primarily based on economics,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Our school included them in the extra curricular activities offered which provided an avenue for
greater social interaction. Nevertheless, there appears to be value in the customized approach to
education that home schooling allows. Another aspect of valuing an education, in particular a
college education, is a monetary one. The earnings potential of receiving a college degree drives
many students to pursue a post secondary education. Cheever points out that college graduates are
likely to make much more money in their lifetimes than those with only a high school education
(103). One thing that needs to be factored into that calculation though is the amount of debt a
student will have to repay after graduating. Student loans usually have a 5% to 6% interest rate
that adds up through the years. For example, one of my cousins who graduated from college in
2000 is still repaying student loans. Even though they may be earning a decent salary, in our
current economy, it may make it more difficult for a college graduate to purchase a home, have a
family or save for retirement when overloaded with educational debt. This issue makes a case that
the cost of education may be too high for those that cannot pay the tuition without going into debt.
Students and parents should be expected to pay for the largest portion of a college education;
however, the costs need to be less

A general strike in Dakar, with the exception of railway workers, guaranteed wage increases,
family allowances for government workers, the recognition of unions, the expansion of wage

members of the Railway Workers Union to lead to a memorable strike. The railways had been
transferred to a parastatal group, which means that it was now owned wholly by the government.
This changed meant that the railroad workers could no longer benefit from the status of civil

Research And Analysis Of Secondary School Students
RESEARCH FINDINS AND ANALYSIS
4.1INTRODUCTION
This chapter shows the results from both quantitative and qualitative research methods. This
research is implemented by completing questionnaires by secondary school teachers and students.
The questionnaires were completed by 200 teachers and 144 students. Also, four secondary school
teachers (from private and public secondary schools) participated in the qualitative research method
(semi structured interview). The interviews were via telephone.
The purpose of this chapter is to present the data collected from both research methods, give
analyses the data and discuss the result.
4.2THE FINDINGS AND DATA ANALYSIS FROM INTERVIEWS
The interviews involved four teachers, two from private secondary schools while the other two
were of public schools. Two teachers taught ICT in their respective schools, one taught chemistry
and the last taught mathematics respectively. The interview took place from 3rd to 11th November
2014. The details of the interview can be seen in Appendix B, C, D, E.
From the interview, everyone that participated seems to have confidence with the use of ICTs
infrastructure. According to every participant, they own a personal computer (PC) and have access
to internet at home either via the use of the mobile data or access to a network modem. All the
teachers said that they surf the internet at least an hour per day and at least four days a week to

Analysis Of Angela Davis s The Black Liberation Movement
Malia Villani World Issues November 30, 2015 Angela Davis: An Autobiography Angela Davis
offers a new perspective of activism during the Black Liberation Movement through her
autobiography. Using personal stories, she sheds light on the obstacles that she had to face
whilst growing up in a predominantly white community while simultaneously trying to balance
school, being active in creating a change, constant hiding, jail time, and wondering when the
view against colored people would change. Davis s autobiography is a narrative of strength,
perseverance, determination, and love for one s culture and people. Davis starts off her
autobiography by setting up the scene prior to her capture in the chapter titled Nets . It includes
the struggle of having to portray herself through numerous identities so that the police could not
track her down; to further explain, Davis is one of the FBI s most wanted for murder,
kidnapping, and conspiracy in connection with the Marin County Courthouse shootout (p. 11).
She was handed off to many of her close friends and others who agreed to keep her hidden and
safe, until one day, she was caught. Police bombarded her with questions before she could answer
and then detained her at the House of Detention in New York where she was separated from her
accomplice and friend, David Poindexter. She was placed in an all women prison that had a high

The Culture Of The Gullah People
Culture is an ever changing, ever evolving entity. Culture is something that for many is taken for
granted as they have always had that connection to their past. It is not easily definable but it is an
essential part of every nation s composition. American culture itself is a conglomeration of several
different cultures that make up a unique and separate identity from each of the cultures it draws
from. Everyone knows about American Southern culture whether their perceptions of it is accurate
or not. Fewer know about African American culture in the south. Many people including some
African Americans themselves are not aware of the aspects of African culture that were preserved
and its influence on American culture as a whole. One major way in which this type of influence
can be seen is in the culture of the Gullahpeople. YOUR INTRODUCTION DEFIENTLY

community of people who descended from West African slaves and have managed to retain
important aspects of their African culture. These people can be found from the coast of North

Gullah/Geechee or Geechee. The main distinction between Gullah people and Geechee people is
that Gullah refers to those from the Carolinas and Geechee is used for those from Florida and

The Road Not Taken Psychoanalytic Approach
Now, as I said previously, I ll analyze Frost s poem The Road Not Taken through the
psychoanalytical approach. Robert Frost is known as one of the most powerful and passionate
poets. He uses philosophy and psychology throughout his poems and most of his poems were
derived from his personal experiences. As I have read from various sources; Frost wrote this
poem to gently mock his friend whose name was Edward Thomas and his indecisions he has
shown on their many walks together. These (which deeply roots in the poem) road walks has
influenced his work, as the poem consists choiceof roads (directions we take as individuals) and
makes us wonder why and how we choose and when we do not choose, why we did not, what was
the reason that prevented... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But is it essential to point out that the author does not point out that this event is of any great
significance. Every day we are faced with simple diverging of roads in our lives and we make a
choice, whether it is which road to take to work or what to prioritize in our daily lives. The
author is stuck in the sense of choosing a path. Most of us make the best choice we are capable
of and move on. In the poem, the leaves are changing their colour and this deep down means that
life dies. The first stanza exposes the truth of decision which the poet is making is a difficult
one. In the continuation of the poem, the poet says grassy and wanted wear . Grassy means
plain green grass, and here we can smell in literary way that there is a breath of life. When we
compare yellow and green, we can notice a big difference. Therefore, the imaginary of the poem
tells how the decision impacts his life. Also, I would like to say that when we make decisions, we
make them consciously, because as we know, we don t want to make a mistake and take the wrong
path, just as we mentioned the term consciousness is introduced by Sigmund Freud. In the second
stanza, the poet has chosen the road which was less traveled and he realized that the both roads
were the same. Next, the poet describes the road that he has taken and how he wishes to travel

Analysis Of The Wild West
Western Identity The Wild West, in American history, is often thought of as being an ideology
filled with adventure and happy endings. This picture of the Wild West is largely in place due to
the romanticizing of the West by Hollywood. Movies portraying the West are filled with
stereotypes, whether they are purposeful or not, that do not accurately show what defines the
Western persona. Stereotypical situations such as Indians being depicted as savages and noble
sheriffs saving the day leave out certain facts that defined the Wild West. Many Indians were
betrayed and slaughtered by American citizens in the Wild West, as shown throughout Dee Brown
s novel, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. Red River, a popular movie with John Wayne about

To many miners, days seemed like years and months like decades. In addition to hardship in
mining, many Americans on the frontier experienced challenges in farming. At first it was difficult
for Americans to grow crops in the West, but eventually technology of agriculture was able to give
Americans the ability to grow crops more efficiently. Wild West was full of trials, and living in it
was certainly not an easy task. It is impossible to write about hardship in the Wild West without
talking about the hardship that Native Americans faced. The war on Indians by the United States
government focused on relocating all Native Americans to reservations so that Americans could
settle in more lands. For this reason, many Native Americans undoubtedly fought back against the
United States government. This led to violence and the slaughtering of Indians for which the Wild
West is known. One famous event concerning the Indian Wars was the Wounded Knee Massacre
.
Dee Brown described this event in her novel, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, saying that the
United States 7th Cavalry Regiment opened up on them, firing almost a shell a second, raking the
Indian camp, shredding the teepees with flying shrapnel, killing men, women, and children.
According to Brown, [o]ne estimate placed the final total of dead at very nearly three hundred of
the original 350 men, women, and children.

Power Of Power And Power Control
According to Joseph (2011), power is ability to affect others to achieve outcomes, which power
holder want. Some people can use power to influence others actions and behaviors without holding
any high position of authority. By contrast, a number of people in genuine positions are powerless
to get desired outcomes by affecting other people. There are some factors which can develop in the
course of time such as leadershipskill and power control, however, to become an effective leader,
he or she has to distinguish various power forms and select her or him own leadership style and
characteristic as well as organize unique working environment (Goncalves, 2013). In order to
explore how a person operates power and influence in a daily life as well as how an effective
leader is, the writer had an interview with a teacher, Cynthia Morgan, in one of the states in the
United States. Through the interview, Cynthia shared honestly about her daily tasks while
working as a teacher in school and her points of view about wielding power and abiding by
others power. Firstly, Cynthia is a teacher as well as the head of the Science department in a
school in the United States. As a civil servant, she has some duties that she has to complete

Compassion Fatigue Essays
New workers in the health care role are often excited, energetic, and ready to take on whatever
comes at them. Little do they know compassion fatigue is nipping at their heels. Compassion
fatigue is common among health care providers and consists of five major concepts. These five
concepts are ambiguity, no win situations, role overload, role conflict, and not being adequately
recognized. Researching concepts of compassion fatigue looks at the nature and causes along with
the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. To deal with and cope there needs to be strategies and

This is formed in the wake of lacking information and clear goals (Espeland, 2006). Direction and
expectations are needed to make sure a person feels comfortable with the job they are doing. If
there is no direction or expectations it becomes difficult to be confident that they are doing their
job. When a person is not confident in what they are doing then one can feel like they are
constantly making mistakes and can lead to an attitude of always being on defense. The second
concept is a no win situation where a supervisor or boss is not happy with the job a healthcare
worker does no matter how good a job the employee is doing (Espeland, 2006). Care givers and
health care providers always strive to do better and change if needed. If a supervisor or boss
gives you direction to change a way of doing things because they feel you are doing something
wrong, and then when you change they are still not satisfied a person can feel as if they can not do
anything to make the situation any better no matter what they do to change. The third concept is
role overload and this happens when the health care worker can not say no to more responsibility

Testing in Hong Kong
Introduction
There are many different kinds of test, as Hugh (1989) stated that test could be regarded as
proficiency tests, achievement tests, diagnostic tests and placement tests. In this article, we would
like to have some simple analysis on the quality of the reading test in the Hong Kong Diploma of
Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination of 2013. This is a newly implemented public
examination in 2002 which serve with different purpose and format as the former public
examination: Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) and the Hong Kong
Advanced Level Examination (HKALE).
Achievement tests are directly related to language course, their purpose being to establish how
successful individual students, groups of students, or the course themselves have been in achieving
objectives. (Hugh, 1989) according to this definition, HKDSE should be an achievement test. Since
it is a stepping stone to get into university in Hong Kong, the DSE examination paper should have
relatively high quality. By using a high standard testing paper, the quality of the universities
candidates can be guarantee.
Bachman (1996) has said that test qualities include reliability, construct validity, authenticity,
interactiveness, impact and practicality. In this paper we will focus on the construct validity,
authenticity and interactiveness to see how well is the KHDSE.

Originally launched as American Record Company in 1929, Sony Music Entertainment Inc. has
since established itself as a leading manufacturer of video, audio, communications, and information
technology products.
In September 1976, the joint venture CBS/Sony Records Inc. presented the market with the
revolutionary compact disc (CD) and began producing the disc in America in 1983. After joining
Bertelsmann AG, Sony eventually acquired BMG s stake in 2008, and began functioning as a

Despite Sony Entertainment s success, due to a declining industry, Sony has been unable to sustain
their profit margins from previous years. After an in depth analysis of Sony Music Entertainment s
industry position and it s rival competitors , along with an assessment of their internal and external

Analysis of Art
Title: Cuteness and Loneliness Life is full emotions like happiness and sadness. People
sometimes feel happy, joyful, and cheerful, but sometimes sadness or depression. Edward
Hopper and Takashi Nakamura draw their paintings to express different feelings. In Edward
Hopper s painting Morning Sun (1952), he displays the image of a woman looking outside alone
in order to symbolize the woman s feelings about depression, but also how she still has hope for
her own life. On the other hand, in Takashi Nakamura painting Kaikaikiki New (2009), he
displays the image of many cartoon like characters in order to symbolize feelings of happiness
Therefore, the two artists express opposing feelings in their works. In Edward Hopper s painting,...

Her face tells me that she does not have courage to give up everything for her new life. She
seems to be a single woman and looks tired of her ordinary life. However, her eyes, looking at
outside, have strong feeling as well. She has a longing to her ordinary life somehow. Thus, she
was sitting on the bed alone, holding her legs, and I can see her struggle for her life. Her eyes
tell me her feelings of not only depression but also hope. Also, in Edward Hopper s image, he
uses darker and brighter colors to symbolize the depression and hope in this image. Overall,
brown and dark brown can be seen throughout the wall, and there is no warm color in her room,
such as red or green color. The dark colors give the observer a sad and troubled impression, so the
darkness symbolizes the woman s depressed feeling. In addition, when Hopper colored her bed a
bluish color, it gives me a cold impression, and she is sleeping on the cold bed during the night.
However, Hopper used a lighter color on the place the sunlight spot. She bathes in the sunlight as
well, so half of her body is brighter. It is because by painting a brighter color on the half of her
body, the observer feels that the figure is receiving light straight at her. So, even though her face

to evaluate the housing market. Is it a buyers or a sellers market. What are interest rates doing?
What mortgage products are available to you now, and could those options change?
B.Main Point # 2: It is very important to be aware of the housing market conditions, what is going
on in the market in regards to interest rates and what mortgage products are available to you. All of
these factors are significant in deciding your time frame for purchasing.
a.Support: This is not data that you will have to go out and collect. They are merely questions you
should ask to determine the urgency of your purchase. Any qualified professional should be able to
answer these questions for you and educate you on how they affect you.
First question, what type of real estate market are we in? Is it a buyers or a sellers market. This
may very well determine if now is the right time for you to buy. Take 2004 as an example. At that
point in time it was a very strong sellers market, which meant that sellers had more control over the
transaction and could demand more from prospective buyers. Almost every seller was receiving
multiple if not 10 or more contracts on their property. This turned every purchase into a bidding war

Prison Management In Prison
Your absolute separation from your loved ones and society can be worth up to $18,000 per year.
At least, that s how much it s worth to the Management and Training Corporation (MTC), who is
one of the three leading private prison management companies in the United States. Companies
such as the MTC, the GEO Group, inc., and the Correction Corporations of America (CCA) make
billions of dollars by keeping criminals locked up. The idea of making profit from prisoners doesn t
sound too inhumane of a notion until you obtain a further understanding of the system and how it
operates. Private prisonmanagement strategists understand that the massive amounts revenue
being shoveled into their corporate bank accounts shares a correlation to the amount of prisoners
incarcerated in their prisons. It is for this reason that companies like the CCA force the
contractual obligation of minimal occupancy guarantees upon states correction departments.
These minimal occupancy guarantees make it so that if a certain states does not incarcerate
enough prisoners to occupy a set percentage (typically the high 90% range) of a facility, that
state would have to pay fees to the companies which own the underpopulated facilities for their
empty beds. This can easily cause states to feel pressured to fulfill quotas by prosecuting
substantial amounts of civilians. It is for this reason, and many others, that the American prison
system is a broken, unprincipled network of captivity which takes its victims and leaves many of
them in a state of mental and financial despair. Prisoners in private prisons are subject to harsh
living conditions, and debilitating mental torture. They are used as pawns in a wicked game for
financial wealth, all at the expense of prisoners well being, and taxpayers wallets. Prisons in the
United States are unsanitary cesspools with loose administration and security. Prisoners, many
incarcerated for nonviolent crimes, are subject to living in filthy facilities surrounded by murderers
and rapists. Taking advantage of prison overpopulation, private prison corporations are able to
mistreat prisoners due to many states need for extra cells. In an essay on HRW.org it is stated that,
States failed to enact laws setting

Market Structure of Oligopoly
Analyse The Structure Of The Market Structure Of Oligopoly And The Difficulty In Predicting
Output And Profits
Market structure of oligopoly
Oligopoly is a market structure where there are a few firms producing all or most of the market
supply of a particular good or service and whose decisions about the industry s output can affect
competitors. Examples of oligopolistic structures are supermarket, banking industry and
pharmaceutical industry.
The characteristics of the oligopoly are:
В•Small number of large firms dominate the industry
В•High degree of interdependence: the behaviour of firms are affected by what they believe other
rivalry firms might do
В•High barriers to entry that restrict new firms to enter the industry e.g. ... Show more content on

Like monopoly, if the oligopoly is maintained in the long run, it charges a high price, produces less
output and fails to maximise social welfare relative to perfect competition.
Cartel is seen by the government as a means of driving up prices and profits which is against the
public interest. As a result it is illegal to operate the cartel in many countries.
Tacit collusion
Tacit Collusion is collusion that is not organized through a formal, open contract between
colluding parties. Tacit collusion is when firms abide to the price that has been set by a
recognized leader. The leader is usually the largest firm i.e. the firm that controls the industry
known as dominant firm price leadership. On the other hand, the leader may be the firm that is
most reliable to follow, known as barometric firm price leader.
Dominant firm price leadership
This is when smaller firm chooses the same price as the price set by the large firms in the industry.
Source: www.bized.ac.uk/educators/he/pearson/lectures
The leader tends to maximise profits where marginal revenue is equal to marginal the marginal
cost, then produces at QL and sell goods at PL on its demand curve where marginal cost equal
marginal revenue. At this stage other firms in the industry will follow the price. Therefore, the
market produces at Qt, with other firms producing the output not supplied by the leader i.e. Qt Ql.

Women in the Western Genre Essay
Ever since the early 20th century, there had been several attempts and experimentation in
creating a new genre of cinema known as the Western. The first well known Western movie The
Great Train Robbery (1903), while not necessarily being the first ever Western, it is by both film
historians and theorists definitely considered the pinnacle of the genre, that got it all started and
that would be the first step in creating others similar to it, but also very different. Because it was
still an unknown genre in film, there had not yet been established a set of rules as for how to
construct films in this new experimental genre so change was to be expected. One of the most

One other Westernfilm that comes to mind when it comes to the role and treatment of women
(Shulman ix) is The Virginian, where Molly, an Eastern schoolteacher who comes to Wyoming
from a good but rather needy Vermont family faces several conflicts one all Westerns are typically
all too familiar with being the inevitable conflict of the East and West, but it seems as though
throughout their interactions with one another it serves as more of a guise for a contest between
men and women when Molly proceeds to educate the Virginian, then in turn educating and
increasingly dominating her thus resulting in a genteel version of the nineteenth century war
between the sexes (Shulman ix), and what could also be stated as a masculine feminine contest
about responsibility and marriage (Shulman xxvii) comes to pass upon Molly s arrival. Despite

if they did not go through with the lynching the judges wouldn t like it. However, soon Judge
Henry overcomes Molly s feminine and Eastern objections, as his three arguments regarding the

Film Analysis Of Two Cars One Night
The films Two cars one night and Boy directed by Taika Waititi are based in New Zealand. Two
cars one night is a short film and the idea for the movie Boy was derived from it. Taika Waititi
uses the film aspects of light and dark lighting and symbolism to portray the themes and his style of
directing through his movie Boy and his short filmtwo cars one night. Waititi uses the lens of a

The lighting in this point in the film almost camouflages the car as it is pitch black at nighttime.
It enables the audience to only see the car s window and the faces inside the car. This gives the
audience a feeling of mystery as they re trying to work out who is inside the car. Waititi uses this
aspect as well in his other film, Two Cars One Night. He uses the lightning to control the audience s
emotions around who in what cars. By weaving the dark lightning around.
Set in 1984 The short film, Two cars one night utilizes the filming aspect of lightand dark lighting
to the contrast between the two cars with children in a pub car park. The long shot exhibited in
the scene gives the picture of the two cars in the car parking lot while the adults are inside the
pub. It shows the aspect of safety and danger for the children as they wait for their parents to
come out from inside of the bar and pub. It also signifies the familiar and unknown as the
children explore with their eyes what is around them. Taika uses the aspect of light and dark light
to symbolize danger and create tension within this scene because as an audience we associate
nighttime with being unsafe for children, and he uses the dark light and children in this scene to
create a sense of danger. An example of this is when the car the two Boys are in is captured sitting
still while the surrounding everything is moving, such as the people and the dark night sky. It

Next came global imperialism during 1893, which was simply an extension of the way
American had won the West (Schultz, 2012, para. 3). Politically, American imperialism can be
traced back to the 1870s when the United States began to compete with European powers to
conquer vulnerable resource rich regions that would provide substantial profits and a worldwide
network of commercial and military bases (Schultz, 2012, para. 7). In 1883, the United States
began to build upon its military through the replacement of wooden sailing ships with powerful
all steel, steam driven battleships, armed with the latest long range artillery (Schultz, 2012, para.

maintaining American territory overseas. As for why America was building a global empire, this
was done to support American economic development and to establish the United States as a
world power worth reckoning with. The United States also worked to build a global empire
because many Americans believed the United States was destined to share the benefits of
democracy and white civilization with the rest of the world (Schultz, 2012, para. 90).

The Complete Manual to Suicide
The way our society views other people by their appearance will probably never change. In some
ways, everyone has it set in their mind what makes a person perfect . These characteristics may
include personal appearance, wealth and intelligence. One does not always take the time to get to

of the painting. The other woman in profile in the painting is facing her adds to this effect. Judith s

This is also emphasized by the use of shadows. The illusion of space adds to the composition by

somewhere dark and secretive.
There were multiple principles of design incorporated into the piece. Such as the rule of thirds and

In order to create a sense of variety in the painting, Bigot utilizes his astounding dexterity in his use

There is a clear visual path for the viewer to follow when observing Bigot s painting of Judith

in the center of the painting, but also because it is the most illuminated compared to the outer edges
of the painting that have a deep valued contrast. The viewer then focuses in Judith because she is
the next element with the most illumination. Her arms lead the viewer down to witness Holofernes

How Did John Maynard Keynes Influence The Modern World
John Maynard Keynes, is considered one of the heavy weights when it comes to modern economic
theory. In today s world there are two major schools of thought when it comes to economics,
Classical and Keynesians. This shows you the impact that he had in the world of economics. His
studies and writings have shaped our modern world.
Keynes got involved into economics because of the time period in which he lived in. He was
seeing the effects of the great depression in his home of Great Britain. The measures taken to stop
the great depression all fell within the school of classical economics. Two events spurred Keynes
development of his new model. The first was the inability of the British economy to overcome the
Great Depression.

What Are The Changes In American Culture
Cultures Change
Not all cultures are the same as The United States. America is the melting pot and it is hard to
find a set culture because we are a still relatively young country. In many other countries such as
India, China, Japan, or Pakistan they do have a set of traditions that do matter and they are taken
very seriously. The book of short stories, Interpreter of Maladies, readers are able to see a
difference in the way people from India are brought up in relation to people from mainly the New
England area of The United States. The story strongly indicates coming of age, finding the
American dream, and family drama by either loss or new beginnings. Immigration is a big topic

Cinematic Techniques In Ender s Game By Gavin Hood
Gavin Hood s Ender s Game is a great showing of power with the help of cinematic techniques.
Some examples of these cinematic techniques are point of view or P.O.V shots, close ups, over
the shoulder, wide angle shots, special effects (FX) and sound. Hood use of power helps convey
the plot and characters personality. Many times during the movie Hood uses wide angle and
over the shoulder shots to show the control and power Colonel Graff, played by Harrison Ford,
possesses. During their first lesson on board the Battle School, the Colonel is shown on a giant
screen in front of all the launchies . This is shown through a wide angle shot behind the launchies
. This shot gives the viewer proof of the Colonels power. Another way Hood shows the Colonel s
power is close up shots an example of this is when the launchies including Ender Wiggin are
launched towards battle school. During this scene Hood uses the over the shoulder shot and places
the audience view behind Colonel Graff. This... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An example of this is when Ender Wiggin, played by Asa Butterfield, has just had his monitor
taken out and his school bully takes this opportunity to pounce. As the bully s gang pulls him
into a private room, Hood uses a Deep focus shot to focus on an alien like object which Ender
later uses to defeat his opponent. This shot gives the audience a clue of which object possess
power and will be used later on in the scene. Another time when this technique is used is when
Ender has just arrived at commanding school and is looking outside his living quarters window
and Hood uses a wide angle shot to show the landscape of the unfamiliar planet with an odd
feature as the center point to the shot. As the viewer looks at this feature there is an odd sound,
which gives this feature a powerful aura. This scene gives the viewer a clue to the story and

Jim Crow Laws Affect African Americans
What are Jim Crow Laws and How Did They Affect African Americans?
Jim Crow laws were repressive laws enacted by White Southern Democrats that targeted
emancipated slaves. These laws drew into effect not long after the Civil War because many
Whites didn t see former slaves as equal citizens. Most Whites thought a Blacks only purpose was
to work as a slave, which resulted in a lack of respect for the Black people. These Jim Crow laws
repressed Black people from having all the same rights that White people had; Blacks lost almost
all their rights after emancipation and were pushed back into subjugation. Jim Crow laws made
it difficult for blacks to exercise their rights in the south after the Civil War. Jim Crow became a
slang term for Black people, resulting in the segregation laws being called Jim Crow Laws. The
name Jim Crow originated from a play made back in 1828. The play was called Jump Jim Crow
and it starred a white actor named Thomas Dartmouth Daddy Rice. Thomas would cover his face
with black paint and make fun of Black people and their ignorance. The play was very popular
which helped the name catch on so easily with the public and spread the assumptions that Blacks
weren t equal citizens. One important right a citizen will exercise is the right to vote. Powerful
people used different strategies to stop blacks from voting, because it was believed the Black vote
would take power away from White voters and could change the south s

The Word Centroid Means
The word centroid means like a center . It is like a center because the centroid of an object is the
center of mass or the balance point. A centroid is also one of the points of concurrency of a
triangle. In addition, a centroid is like a circumcenter and is located on the inside of the triangle
where the perpendicular bisectors of a triangle intersect. Furthermore, the centroid of a triangle is
made up of the intersection of three medians and the division of a centroid and a median makes a
ratio of 2:1. In other words, the centroid of a triangle will be 2/3 of the way along any median that
had been given. The median also creates six congruent triangles out of the original triangle. A
median of a triangle is a line segment that joins a vertex

Explain How Software Utilities Improve The Performance Of...
D1: explain how software utilities can improve the performance of computer systems
There are many software utilities that can be used to improve a computer system. Below is a list of
them.
Virus Protection
This utility helps to improve the performance of a computer system by maintaining a safe
environment for the user to use and keep out viruses that slow down a system performance and its
effectiveness on devices; it does this by preventing malware from entering a system and ultimately
removing the virus from the system if required. If the system has no viruses it will run effectively.
This is because without the virus protection, the viruses would be activate and could start slowing
down the computer. Virus protection will help slowdown this ... Show more content on

This helps to improve system performance as it will clear up more space for the computer and
make it quicker and effective.
Drive Formatting
This utility prepares storage media for use by creating barriers from other files and readying it for
file storage, this benefits the system by allowing it to have a fully functioning storage media
device that is ready to use. This is an improvement to current systems by ensuring storage media is
ready to use and makes the computer more effective and efficient as you can access files instantly.
Backup Tools
This utility duplicates any files and stores them in an alternate location such as a separate hard
drive to the one were the original files are, this is done so that if the computer fails, then there is
a copy of that file in a separate location so that it can be obtained and sent back into the system,
this will stop files from truly being lost. This improves the performance of a system as it allows
the users to resume as quickly as possible in the event of a systems failure. Also it will help stop
the computer from faulting as the computer will have back up files to recover. So hence this will
improve the performance of a computer as the computer can resume its functions

A Good President Good Or Bad Analysis
Introduction In order to evaluate whether a president was good or bad, one must first decide
what constitutes a good president and a bad president. To me, a good president is one who does
more good than bad and is morally more good than bad. A good president leads for the people
while a bad president leads for his own benefit and the interests of his benefactors. A good
president is honest, benevolent, and dedicated to the well being of all people, but a bad
president is deceitful, greedy, and dedicated to the well being of only himself and his allies.
However, most presidents are neither good nor bad, but somewhere in between. To discover
whether a president how good or bad a president is, one must focus on all of his or her actions, not

In 1975, the Civil Service Commission nullified the discrimination of this order by allowing the
employment of homosexual workers on a case by case basis. In 1954, the Eisenhower
Administration began to implement an immigration policy known as Operation Wetback, which
created deportation teams to round up illegal immigrants and forcefully return them to Mexico.
Over 1 million immigrants were deported to Mexico, but many of them were left stranded after
arriving, far from their homes and families. Not only was Operation Wetback inhumane, it was also
ineffective because although many immigrants were removed from the country, thousands of them
returned only to be deported again. These immigrants were returning to the United States because
American growers continued to hire them rather than American citizens, a problem that was not
dealt with by the Eisenhower Administration. Throughout his presidency, Eisenhower was deeply
involved in foreign affairs. Although he had many accomplishments in that matter, some of his
international actions were not good. In 1953, the CIA, with approval from Eisenhower and the
cooperation of the British MI6, staged a В¬coup in Iran over petroleum supplies and dishonest
claims of communist threats, leaving the country under the rule of a monarch. Only a year later, the
Eisenhower administration authorized a another CIA coup, this time in Guatemala, to remove the
democratically elected President ГЃrbenz and replace him with a dictator for the purpose of
protecting the interests of the American corporation known as the United Fruit Company. Another
case of failed covert operations under the Eisenhower Presidency occurred on May 1st, 1960 when
an American spy plane was shot down by the Soviet Union. The Eisenhower administration lied

Flamenco Research Paper
Flamenco is a Spanish art form made up of three parts: guitar, song, and dance. Flamenco has its
own type of guitar. It is similar to a classical guitar but with thinner tops and less internal bracing.
The guitar is stroked at a fast pace and the base can be used as a drum. There are many song forms
in Flamenco singing. Each expresses a unique emotion. Songs in the Latino culture are popular in
Flamenco singing. Flamenco dancing is known for its emotional intensity, proud carriage,
expressive use of the arms, and rhythmic stamping of the feet. Castanets are also often used.
Flamenco was originated in Andalusia, Spain in the 8th to 15th centuries when Spain was under

Borders Are The Worst Invention Ever Made By Politicians...
The Problem
Borders are the worst invention ever made by politicians, Jean Claude Juncker, the European
Commission president stated this while reflecting on globalization s failed promise of
borderless nations, and the creation of borders more rigid than ever (2016). Across the world,
wall building has become the common political strategy used by nations who deem physical
barriers as the only way to deal with difficult neighboring nations. The increasing fortification of
borders as not just a political line, but as an established physical barrier, responds to the security
and migration issues at a global level. Border walls are used for varying purposes, walls can
separate opposing forces; often, they are used to make territorial claims; however the more
problematic use, is the keep out unwanted groups.
When the Berlin Wall fell nearly three decades ago, there were 16 border walls in the world;
today the number is ever growing with over 70 completed border walls globally (Brunet Jailly,
2016). Experts agree that walls do not address the root problems of security and migration,
supported by the fact that global refugee applications and terrorist attacks have increased
tremendously even though countries have walled themselves off; which leaves unanswered
questions as to the real reason walls are still being built. Although building a wall has become a
common political strategy in response to global concerns of security and migration, nations should
consider the reasoning

How Bill Gates Is The Man He Is Today
The best way to predict the future is to create it . This is correctly stated by Peter Drucker, and
upheld by all visionaries who created history in the world of technology. The 20th century marked a
major turning point in computer advancements that changed the world forever with Microsoft
leading the way. Bill Gates, the co founder of Microsoft, always envisioned Microsoft to be a leader
in the computer industry, and that is exactly what he accomplished. Today, Microsoft has not only
touched and changed the life of the common man, but it has revolutionized the business, medical,
production and communication sector of the work world. Through taking risks, and believing in

Within this environment it is essential for entrepreneurs to be innovative and prepared. Having a
strong willed attitude allows an entrepreneur to build on their business strategies because their
mind is not deterred from what they want to accomplish. The element of success behind Gates
strategy of being strong willed is definitely due to his personal character. When Gates first
developed Microsoft he was determined to get his company to the top of the technological
industry. Dear Love stated in his book His competitive spirit and personal drive to succeed was
legendary (Dear Love, 89). This exemplifies how Bill Gates truly did have the drive to complete
tasks at hand, and this was all apart of who he was as a person. Having a strong willed attitude is
an essential step to becoming successful in whatever you wish to pursue, just as Bill Gates has
displayed in his many years of success. Overall, Gates being head strong and confident about his
software is definitely what allowed him to rise to the top. He believed in his product, which made
everyone else believe in it too.
Determination is a key element to the strategy of anyone who wants to become successful. If you
are not determined to succeed you are less likely to do so. Bill Gates was always determined to
make his software company into the huge corporation it is now. Dear Love in his book writes,

The Road to Serfdom Valid Today as it Was in 1944 Essay
The Road to Serfdom Valid Today as it Was in 1944
The following paper will explore the book, The Road to Serfdom, by F.A. Hayek. I challenge that
many of Hayek s assumptions are still valid today even though his book was written in 1944.
Hayek s assumptions regarding 1) the government s rule of the law, 2) the concept of government
directed economic activity that includes artificial separation of economics and politics, and 3) the
notion that the unscrupulous and uninhibited are likely to be more successful, are still true in
today. Hayek was anti central planning yet not anti welfare state, and he was a libertarian. As a
libertarian he believed that the emphasis of the government should be on individual freedom. ...

The most recent example of this locally involves the Port of Olympia. The port discriminates
against individual businesses that it believes are not consistent with the plan for the area. Lack of
controls allows for government control of industries that can lead to discrimination based on
individual beliefs and values. There is no doubt that the Olympia government maintains enormous
power over good and evil. One has only to look to the Seattle Tacoma Airport as another prime
example. The Port district has imminent domain allowing it to take private property for the good of
the people. It appears to be more for the good of the Port. The Port is currently acquiring property
under the pretense of needing to build a third runway. It is not relevant that the permit for the
runway will be held up in the court system for many years. Of the property acquired, much is from
individual homeowners. The Port acquired these properties at residential property zoned prices and
then land became industrially zoned. The individual property owners lost not only their homes but
also a great deal of money. The Port also decided what businesses would remain within the

Iris Protea Suffering From Anorexia Nervosa
Reflection:
The Gardeners details the experiences of protagonist Iris Protea suffering from Anorexia Nervosa, in
essence symbolic of the internal struggles we face daily. The conflict illuminated through my text is
psychological conflict. The brain is such a powerful yet vulnerable tool, and the effect it has on an
individual when morphed into something dangerous and overbearing is a beautiful insecurity
inspiring my text. Iris is battling with her emotional disharmonies, echoed by her misinterpretations
of the world around her. Iris mistakes beauty and positivity for cruelty and malignancy, portrayed
through the foreshadowing of the wind and the extended metaphor of a garden. The notion of a
garden is so central to life itself, the clash of both weeds and flowers, the catalyst of sunlight to
grow, and the pruning we require to replenish ourselves as humans and learn from the dreaded
seeds that plant themselves in our lives. Physical conflict is also delved in the piece, a product of Iris

  • 2. Unnatural Thankfulness In Nicaragua A wave of joy and laughter dances around me as I sit with what seems to be an endless amount of animated children. One child laughs and cries, friends are not food! , as his friend playfully pretends to eat his arm. I join the children in amusement then to comment, Friends are not food, like in the movie Nemo remember? Friends are not food, oo ha ha . I began to laugh expectant of the children to join, only to find blank stares and confused expressions. I quickly realize that they aren t laughing because it s not funny, but because they have never seen the movie Nemo. Although being a classic in the United States, these Nicaraguan children have no more than a pair of clothes and a blanket for the night, so the treat of seeing a movie, such... It s unfortunate that to simply become grateful I had to travel to a third world country and live with the poorest of the poor. This dilemma of unnatural thankfulness is a problem I find only in those who have everything they could ever want or need. I became angry at school when kids complained about seemingly insignificant things. I would think to myself, that chicken you refuse to eat because it is too cold is a sandwich a child in Nicaragua would beg on their knees to eat. This complete awareness of the world around me and my petty culture only came to me because of a mission trip I took to a poor country named Nicaragua for one week of my summer. It took only one week of my summer in a country solely built on love, compassion and content to transform my critical attitude to that of thankfulness. It took only one week of my summer to begin appreciating things of little relevance in our fast pace and chaotic culture. It took only one week of my summer to force me to be aware of others and express love and kindness to even those who don t deserve it. It took only one week of my summer to fix me, ... • 3. Johann Sebastian Bach Impact Johann Sebastian Bach is primarily known for being an outstanding organist and virtuosic. He was a German composer in the baroque period. The baroque period is the time where human emotions start to influence music and is often associated with being romantic. Bach was regarded in his time as an extremist because he had great detail in his pieces. In his 65 years of life, he wrote over 1,000 compositions. Bach s most famous works include Toccata and Fugue in D minor, The Well Tempered Clavier, and The Cello Suites. It is safe to say that Bach left an imprint and is still influential to music all over the world. His pieces are still recognizable and used in numerous movies. Bach influenced 18th and 19th century composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and Mendelssohn. Bach has several monuments including the one in Leipzig built in 1908 that people still frequently visit. Using his talent and skills with music, Bach shared his love for music and began to make a name for himself. Bach was born Eisenach, Germany, on March 31, 1685. He came from a multi generation family of musicians. Elizabeth LГ¤mmerhirt Bach was his mother s name and his father, Johann Ambrosius Bach, was a church organist and taught young Bach how to play the violin. The magic will gradually fade and they may have a few questions for you... The Shift Children cannot distinguish the difference between fantasy and reality like adults. They believe that fantasy can be real because they do not know the limits of reality.[1] This limitless way to see the world allows them to believe that anything can happen. • 6. Technology Changes In America Technology was the highlight of every 7th graders day last year. Technology was interesting and fun and always taught us something new. We as a class were constantly doing new activities on the computers, but all that changed this year. Technology was replaced with a special class named Math lab. At first most of our class knew what to think of what this new special would be. Yet after the first class it was obvious what Math Lab was. Math lab was a boring, repetitive, strict class that only minorly strengthens skills in Math that most of both classes already knew. If we do not bring back technology instead of math lab we may not be able to learn computer skills that are needed in High School. If Technology does not come back instead of Math lab we and future 8th graders may not know skills on the computer needed for high school. When our class enters high school, with technology as a class gone, we will not know how to use important programs such as PowerPoint or Microsoft Word. Knoxville Catholic, Farragut High school, and Lenoir City high school have a computers technology class. They have no Math Lab or computers math class. Rapid Modernisation Of Armed Forces There are a variety of reasons for the rapid modernisation of armed forces in the Southeast Asia region interstate and regional tensions exist within Southeast Asia and interactive military programmes have developed as a result, and there has been a rapid build up of military capabilities. Additionally, there has been advances in technology, creating a need for states to modernise their armed forces to be able to compete and military advancement in the region has contributed to the security dilemma in Southeast Asia, leading to further arms build up. Most importantly, there is evidence of the beginnings of an arms race in Southeast Asia, which also explains the modernisation of armed forces. Thus, the reasons for the rapid modernisation of armed forces in the Southeast Asia region are the consequences of interstate and regional tensions, technological advancement, the growing security dilemma and the beginning of an arms race. Interstate and Regional Tensions Throughout Southeast Asia, there are a number of relationships between state actors that are marked by mutual distrust, and these bilateral relationships fuel the arms race within Asia due to security concerns. These distrustful relationships between nations have their root causes in historical animosities, racial and religious divisions or competition for influence and resources (Richardson 1990: 24). Cheever, Jr. contends that, The real question is whether students are getting their money s worth (102). He emphasizes the value of education and not only the cost. Higher education is the focus of Cheever s essay, but I believe the same question of worth can be asked concerning elementary through high school educationas well. Both public and private schools offer distinctive educational opportunities and each individual needs to resolve the question of value. Our school included them in the extra curricular activities offered which provided an avenue for greater social interaction. Nevertheless, there appears to be value in the customized approach to education that home schooling allows. Another aspect of valuing an education, in particular a college education, is a monetary one. The earnings potential of receiving a college degree drives many students to pursue a post secondary education. Cheever points out that college graduates are likely to make much more money in their lifetimes than those with only a high school education (103). One thing that needs to be factored into that calculation though is the amount of debt a student will have to repay after graduating. Student loans usually have a 5% to 6% interest rate that adds up through the years. For example, one of my cousins who graduated from college in 2000 is still repaying student loans. Even though they may be earning a decent salary, in our current economy, it may make it more difficult for a college graduate to purchase a home, have a family or save for retirement when overloaded with educational debt. This issue makes a case that the cost of education may be too high for those that cannot pay the tuition without going into debt. Students and parents should be expected to pay for the largest portion of a college education; however, the costs need to be less ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis Of Angela Davis s The Black Liberation Movement Malia Villani World Issues November 30, 2015 Angela Davis: An Autobiography Angela Davis offers a new perspective of activism during the Black Liberation Movement through her autobiography. Using personal stories, she sheds light on the obstacles that she had to face whilst growing up in a predominantly white community while simultaneously trying to balance school, being active in creating a change, constant hiding, jail time, and wondering when the view against colored people would change. Davis s autobiography is a narrative of strength, perseverance, determination, and love for one s culture and people. Davis starts off her autobiography by setting up the scene prior to her capture in the chapter titled Nets . It includes the struggle of having to portray herself through numerous identities so that the police could not track her down; to further explain, Davis is one of the FBI s most wanted for murder, kidnapping, and conspiracy in connection with the Marin County Courthouse shootout (p. 11). She was handed off to many of her close friends and others who agreed to keep her hidden and safe, until one day, she was caught. Culture is something that for many is taken for granted as they have always had that connection to their past. It is not easily definable but it is an essential part of every nation s composition. American culture itself is a conglomeration of several different cultures that make up a unique and separate identity from each of the cultures it draws from. Everyone knows about American Southern culture whether their perceptions of it is accurate or not. Fewer know about African American culture in the south. Many people including some African Americans themselves are not aware of the aspects of African culture that were preserved and its influence on American culture as a whole. As I have read from various sources; Frost wrote this poem to gently mock his friend whose name was Edward Thomas and his indecisions he has shown on their many walks together. The author is stuck in the sense of choosing a path. Most of us make the best choice we are capable of and move on. In the poem, the leaves are changing their colour and this deep down means that life dies. The first stanza exposes the truth of decision which the poet is making is a difficult one. In the continuation of the poem, the poet says grassy and wanted wear . Grassy means plain green grass, and here we can smell in literary way that there is a breath of life. When we compare yellow and green, we can notice a big difference. Therefore, the imaginary of the poem tells how the decision impacts his life. Also, I would like to say that when we make decisions, we make them consciously, because as we know, we don t want to make a mistake and take the wrong path, just as we mentioned the term consciousness is introduced by Sigmund Freud. In the second stanza, the poet has chosen the road which was less traveled and he realized that the both roads were the same. Next, the poet describes the road that he has taken and how he wishes to travel ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 22. Analysis Of The Wild West Western Identity The Wild West, in American history, is often thought of as being an ideology filled with adventure and happy endings. This picture of the Wild West is largely in place due to the romanticizing of the West by Hollywood. Movies portraying the West are filled with stereotypes, whether they are purposeful or not, that do not accurately show what defines the Western persona. Stereotypical situations such as Indians being depicted as savages and noble sheriffs saving the day leave out certain facts that defined the Wild West. Many Indians were betrayed and slaughtered by American citizens in the Wild West, as shown throughout Dee Brown s novel, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. In addition to hardship in mining, many Americans on the frontier experienced challenges in farming. At first it was difficult for Americans to grow crops in the West, but eventually technology of agriculture was able to give Americans the ability to grow crops more efficiently. Wild West was full of trials, and living in it was certainly not an easy task. It is impossible to write about hardship in the Wild West without talking about the hardship that Native Americans faced. The war on Indians by the United States government focused on relocating all Native Americans to reservations so that Americans could settle in more lands. For this reason, many Native Americans undoubtedly fought back against the United States government. This led to violence and the slaughtering of Indians for which the Wild West is known. One famous event concerning the Indian Wars was the Wounded Knee Massacre . Dee Brown described this event in her novel, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, saying that the United States 7th Cavalry Regiment opened up on them, firing almost a shell a second, raking the Indian camp, shredding the teepees with flying shrapnel, killing men, women, and children. Thus, she was sitting on the bed alone, holding her legs, and I can see her struggle for her life. Her eyes tell me her feelings of not only depression but also hope. Also, in Edward Hopper s image, he uses darker and brighter colors to symbolize the depression and hope in this image. Overall, brown and dark brown can be seen throughout the wall, and there is no warm color in her room, such as red or green color. • 30. Prison Management In Prison Your absolute separation from your loved ones and society can be worth up to $18,000 per year. At least, that s how much it s worth to the Management and Training Corporation (MTC), who is one of the three leading private prison management companies in the United States. Companies such as the MTC, the GEO Group, inc., and the Correction Corporations of America (CCA) make billions of dollars by keeping criminals locked up. The idea of making profit from prisoners doesn t sound too inhumane of a notion until you obtain a further understanding of the system and how it operates. Private prisonmanagement strategists understand that the massive amounts revenue being shoveled into their corporate bank accounts shares a correlation to the amount of prisoners incarcerated in their prisons. It is for this reason that companies like the CCA force the contractual obligation of minimal occupancy guarantees upon states correction departments. These minimal occupancy guarantees make it so that if a certain states does not incarcerate enough prisoners to occupy a set percentage (typically the high 90% range) of a facility, that state would have to pay fees to the companies which own the underpopulated facilities for their empty beds. This can easily cause states to feel pressured to fulfill quotas by prosecuting substantial amounts of civilians. It is for this reason, and many others, that the American prison system is a broken, unprincipled network of captivity which takes its victims and leaves many of them in a state of mental and financial despair. Prisoners in private prisons are subject to harsh living conditions, and debilitating mental torture. They are used as pawns in a wicked game for financial wealth, all at the expense of prisoners well being, and taxpayers wallets. Prisons in the United States are unsanitary cesspools with loose administration and security. Prisoners, many incarcerated for nonviolent crimes, are subject to living in filthy facilities surrounded by murderers and rapists. Taking advantage of prison overpopulation, private prison corporations are able to mistreat prisoners due to many states need for extra cells. For example, Carmen Colon was the first victim, she went missing on the evening of November 16th, 1971. When Carmen was supposed to be getting medications in Bull s head, Rochester, for her grandfather, she would never be seen again. Carmen found the next day and was not feed, was not clothed, sexually assaulted, had bruises all over her body and was strangled by the killers hands. Wanda would be the next victim 17 months later, she was taken on April 2nd, 1973, when she was supposed to be getting groceries for her mother. Lastly, would be Michelle, who was taken on November 26th, 1973 on her way home from school. Unlike Carmen, the other two girls were feed, were clothed, sexually assaulted also, had little to no bruises, and were strangled with a belt. One important piece of evidence is that the detective suspected there could be two alphabet killers. One of those they believe could be Carmen Colon s uncle, Miguel Colon. Detectives think this because he avoided being questioned about Carmen s death, his alibi was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 46. Cinematic Techniques In Ender s Game By Gavin Hood Gavin Hood s Ender s Game is a great showing of power with the help of cinematic techniques. Some examples of these cinematic techniques are point of view or P.O.V shots, close ups, over the shoulder, wide angle shots, special effects (FX) and sound. Hood use of power helps convey the plot and characters personality. Many times during the movie Hood uses wide angle and over the shoulder shots to show the control and power Colonel Graff, played by Harrison Ford, possesses. During their first lesson on board the Battle School, the Colonel is shown on a giant screen in front of all the launchies . This is shown through a wide angle shot behind the launchies . This shot gives the viewer proof of the Colonels power. • 47. Jim Crow Laws Affect African Americans What are Jim Crow Laws and How Did They Affect African Americans? Jim Crow laws were repressive laws enacted by White Southern Democrats that targeted emancipated slaves. These laws drew into effect not long after the Civil War because many Whites didn t see former slaves as equal citizens. Most Whites thought a Blacks only purpose was to work as a slave, which resulted in a lack of respect for the Black people. These Jim Crow laws repressed Black people from having all the same rights that White people had; Blacks lost almost all their rights after emancipation and were pushed back into subjugation. Jim Crow laws made it difficult for blacks to exercise their rights in the south after the Civil War. Jim Crow became a slang term for Black people, resulting in the segregation laws being called Jim Crow Laws. The name Jim Crow originated from a play made back in 1828. The play was called Jump Jim Crow and it starred a white actor named Thomas Dartmouth Daddy Rice. Thomas would cover his face with black paint and make fun of Black people and their ignorance. The play was very popular which helped the name catch on so easily with the public and spread the assumptions that Blacks weren t equal citizens. One important right a citizen will exercise is the right to vote. Powerful people used different strategies to stop blacks from voting, because it was believed the Black vote would take power away from White voters and could change the south s ... To me, a good president is one who does more good than bad and is morally more good than bad. A good president is honest, benevolent, and dedicated to the well being of all people, but a bad president is deceitful, greedy, and dedicated to the well being of only himself and his allies. Over 1 million immigrants were deported to Mexico, but many of them were left stranded after arriving, far from their homes and families. Not only was Operation Wetback inhumane, it was also ineffective because although many immigrants were removed from the country, thousands of them returned only to be deported again. These immigrants were returning to the United States because American growers continued to hire them rather than American citizens, a problem that was not dealt with by the Eisenhower Administration. Throughout his presidency, Eisenhower was deeply involved in foreign affairs. Although he had many accomplishments in that matter, some of his international actions were not good. The Problem Borders are the worst invention ever made by politicians, Jean Claude Juncker, the European Commission president stated this while reflecting on globalization s failed promise of borderless nations, and the creation of borders more rigid than ever (2016). Across the world, wall building has become the common political strategy used by nations who deem physical barriers as the only way to deal with difficult neighboring nations. The increasing fortification of borders as not just a political line, but as an established physical barrier, responds to the security and migration issues at a global level. Border walls are used for varying purposes, walls can separate opposing forces; often, they are used to make territorial claims; however the more problematic use, is the keep out unwanted groups. When the Berlin Wall fell nearly three decades ago, there were 16 border walls in the world; today the number is ever growing with over 70 completed border walls globally (Brunet Jailly, 2016). Experts agree that walls do not address the root problems of security and migration, supported by the fact that global refugee applications and terrorist attacks have increased tremendously even though countries have walled themselves off; which leaves unanswered questions as to the real reason walls are still being built. Although building a wall has become a common political strategy in response to global concerns of security and migration, nations should consider the reasoning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hayek s assumptions regarding 1) the government s rule of the law, 2) the concept of government directed economic activity that includes artificial separation of economics and politics, and 3) the notion that the unscrupulous and uninhibited are likely to be more successful, are still true in today.
