This document discusses perspectives on school security measures outlined in a textbook. It argues that two specific measures - limiting student access to school mail and reviewing procedures for handling envelopes with powder substances - are not as important as other measures. For the school mail measure, students are unlikely to have access to mail in the first place. For the envelope measure, a focus on suspicious packages found on school grounds would be more practical than creating paranoia about letters. It also questions whether field trips should be cancelled during times of possible threat to take a precautionary approach to security.

The document discusses the Patriot Act and arguments for and against it. It was passed after 9/11 to help the government combat terrorism by making it easier to monitor communications and activities. However, critics argue it violates civil liberties and basic constitutional rights by allowing warrantless searches, wiretaps, and indefinite detentions. Supporters counter that it is necessary to share information between agencies and prevent future terrorist attacks, especially with new technologies making it harder to monitor threats. The debate centers around balancing security and privacy.

This document discusses two approaches to innovation - a technical approach focused on machinery and systems, and a more knowledge-centered approach. It argues that while the technical approach views innovation as new technologies and products, the knowledge-centered approach sees innovation occurring through new theories and strategies in fields like management. The document draws on case studies to assess the value of both approaches, concluding that knowledge innovation focuses on applying creativity and logic to strategies for accomplishing tasks, as opposed to technical innovation's focus on new product development.

This article by Colin Hancock and Heenali Patel, discusses how two women, Jose Hendo, Juliana
Nasasira, and Isabella Asiimwe, are trying to change Uganda s fashion industry by using tree bark as a
role in their clothing making. These two women have used a fabric called bark cloth, which came
from Uganda s trees from over 600 years ago. Jose Hendo, upcoming designer, thought this was a
great idea for her because she aimed to help in bringing back this ancient material trend from many
years ago. Although what these ladies are crafting are very beautiful fashion pieces, business is going
to be very harsh for them. Uganda is known as one of the poorest countries in the world. Therefore,

This is a very unique process of creating fashion. The use of tree bark goes way back until 600 years
ago from an ancient culture. However, Uganda s fashion industry struggles a lot because this unique
clothing does come with a price. Many people who can actually afford these clothes are very rare
because Uganda s economy has very low income like many other countries in Africa. It also costs a lot
of money to even produce the material because you need workers to mass produce the items which
leads to money. Isabella Asiimwe came up with the idea of using Facebook as a gateway to expanding
the tree bark material styled clothing. This idea could help Isabella expand her profits throughout not
only Africa but maybe through Milan, the fashion capital of the world. This is a very interesting topic
because fashion is always known as cotton, polyester, and many synthetic materials. Bark cloth is such
a cultural material to use because you know it s handmade and worth more because of its sense of
being made by a natural resource. Therefore, many others will come to buy this product because now
a days, people are starting to get interested in the handmade things. I strongly believe this is a very
good step in helping to boost Uganda s fashion industry and maybe their economy in the soon

Active voice describes the sentences where the action or verb is occurring from the subject.
Furthermore, there are three examples of Ferrell as she uses several examples of active voice
throughout her poems. Ferrell begins her poem, Harmless as Recalled by a Fairy Tale by recalling ,
After our rendez vous this is the last word he said, waving to me as the train pulled away from the
station (1 2), in this sentence the active voice she is conveying is through the word waving. In this
sentence the subject is the train and the action being done is waving. In another example of her poem
of, Harmless as Recalled by a Fairy Tale , she vindicates, Hunting out clues, I went over the roses and
snows of his departed face like a treasure map, over ( 15 16), in this sentence the word she uses to
convey active voice is through the word hunting. In this sentence she describes how as she was
departed from her lover, her world had come crashing down and sets out a mysterious tone for the
poem. In addition to the example of an active voice is in her poem Gerburt des Monica kinds when

Both, Gramazio and Kohler, seem to satisfy a more holistic view of Richard Sennett ideas. They seem
to develop an in depth interaction with the robotic technology, a method that enriches the act of craft
in a more liberated way.
There are two the main factors that broaden the architectural design potentials by the use of the robotic
technology. First, the control software plays a crucial role because robots enable the manufacturing of
object directly from their digital description, thus, the designer is enabled with an in depth interaction
with the manufacturing processes that emerge and grasps the opportunity to experiment with non
standard project specific fabrications. Furthermore, the ability of the computer to permit the objects

R O B scale 1:1
The R O B mobile fabrication unit has brought new possibilities in the building environment since it
can be applied at an architectural scale with the capability to expand the possibilities to reinvent the
architectural processes and materials. In addition, R O B ability to be liberated from the fixed
production location is probably his biggest advantage among others. The unit is housed in a specially
adapted freight container of standard size and can be easily transported directly on the building site.
The R O B is consisted of a customary industrial robot mounted on a linear axis and has the ability to
cover a workspace big enough for the fabrication of 1:1 scale architectural elements which are built
directly. By the use of the robotic arm complete building elements are no longer needed, only raw
material has to be brought on site, hence reducing transport and economic costs. Upon the conception
of the R O B, the production of building parts can be synchronized to the progress of the building.
Hence, design and fabrication experience unforeseen changes in the course of construction process. As
a result designers can react to strategic changes during the

5. Flowers For Alggernon In Flowers For Algernon
Was Charlie better off before or after the operation?
Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes is about Charlie Gordon, a mentally disabled 37 year old that is
offered a one in a lifetime chance of being intelligent by having an operation. Although the operation
works and he becomes very intelligent, he slowly loses his intelligence later on. Although Charlie has
lost his I.Q which is his intelligence, he has still kept his E.Q which is his emotional intelligence.
Charlie also has the involvement of going through all of that which transforms him as a person and he
does not let anyone take advantage of him anymore. This shows that Charlie is still better off after the
operation than before.
To begin, Charlie is still better off after the surgery because he now has E.Q, or emotional intelligence
unlike he did before he got the operation. Before the operation, Charlie did not understand the
emotions of people. For instance, the entry on April 15 (Keyes 291) tells us that when Charlie and Ms.
Kinnian were talking, Ms. Kinnian got something in her eye and had to go into the ladies room, but
we knew that she was actually crying, an example of dramatic irony. This displays that before the
operation, Charlie does not know the emotional standpoint of people, but after the operation Charlie
does. To demonstrate, after Charlie had the operation but lost his intelligence, Charlie went into Ms.
Kinnians class acting like he used to before the operation. Then, he said, She startid to cry

Child rearing is the process of promoting and supporting the physical, emotional, social and intellectual
development of child from infancy to adulthood.Child rearing is one of the most important parts of
married couple s life or a family. Different cultures have different child raising practices, also
countries has specific rules for parents to take caring of their children. Parents who move from their
native country to another country often face many challenges or problems in raising children. In this
essay, I will discuss some of the problems faced by immigrant Indian women in child raising in
Canada . Parenting is more challenging in Canada as comparing to India. Having one or more children
makes couple s life very busy in Canada. The main problem I found in Canada is that parents do not
have an extended family or kinship support that means they do not have many family members or
relatives who can help them in taking care of children. Most people in Canada living in nuclear
families. Women have to face pregnancy alone.Working parents where both parents are employed
have a very hard time in managing work and household responsibilities such as child care. So , I found
that Indian immigrant parents loose kinship support in child caring in Canada that makes their
parenting more difficult. However, in India, children are raised by the hierarchal kinship structure

7. The North West Rail Link
Introduction
Australian residents dwelling in the suburban areas of the Hills district face many challenges,
specifically those living amidst areas with constricted public transport facilities. Thus, the State
government s appraisal of an extensive transport infrastructure project in 2011, aimed to focus largely
on a sustainable delivery (Bain Li, 2011) for the environment and local community. In doing so, it is
believed that this large scale initiative will allow members of the North West region to enjoy the
benefit of an extended CityRail network for the first time. The project, known as the North West Rail
Link (NWRL), aspires to provide eight new train station services to existing suburbs in the Hills
district including; Cherrybrook, Castle Hill, The Hills Centre, Norwest Business Park, Bella Vista,
Kellyville, Rouse Hill and Cudgegong Road. The totally integrated transport product also aims to
provide aesthetically pleasing locations (Hensher, Mulley Yahya, 2010) for housing and jobs that will
sustain economic and environmental character.
Adding travel opportunities for the community may contribute to environmental sustainability, as
affordable transport fares will decrease the number of journeys taken by car, and thus will directly
minimize carbon emissions (Paulley et al, 2006) into the atmosphere. Additional sustainable measures
for the project include waste management; water efficiency (Bain Li, 2011); land use integration,

8. Punishment Is The Punishment An Individual
Retribution can be described with these two words: Deserved Punishment. Retribution is the
punishment an individual receives contingent upon the severity of their wrong doings. They must pay
their debts . The authors of the text Criminal Justice in America mentions that if the government fails
to sentence the individual to an appropriate amount of punishment, society will take the situation into
their own hands (Cole, Smith and DeJong 277). If a murderer receives 5 years in prison, the family of
the victim(s) would feel like justice wasn t served and would probably resort to their own type of
retribution (Cole, Smith and DeJong 277). Punishment is the ethical response to harm inflicted on the
society. What this means is, if society ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As rational individuals, we weigh the consequences of our actions versus the benefits of our actions.
The more severe the punishment of the potential crime, the higher chance that individuals will be
deterred. If a petty thief receives an 8 year minimum sentence along with a high fine, the severity of
this punishment will deter others from committing the same crime. Also, the severity of the
punishment of the first time offense must be severe enough to deter the same individual from
committing another crime. The downside of the deterrence theory is that it assumes that everyone
thinks before they act (Cole, Smith and DeJong 278). Individuals who are mentally unstable or have
psychological problems aren t accounted for.
Another major goal of punishment is incapacitation. Incapacitation deprives an offender from the
ability to commit crimes by detaining them in prison. Both deterrence and incapacitation focuses on
the potential of a crime occurring in the future. But with incapacitation, the offender is kept in prison
and won t be given another chance in society until they have proven that they will no longer commit
crimes (Cole, Smith and DeJong 278). Being punished by incapacitation is dependent upon the nature
of the crimes committed in the past and how extensive the offender s criminal record is (Cole, Smith
and DeJong 278). There are some difficulties with this form of punishment because there is

The Conditions For Factory Workers In Nineteenth Century Britain
In the nineteenth century some people thought that factories were the best thing that ever created in
Great Britain, however, workers inside them thought differently.
No group was as exploited as children, who were put to work before they could read or write.Children
were employed in industry and agriculture as soon as they started using their hands and were able to
walk. They worked in farms, mills, factories, coalmines and on the streets. They sacrificed having an
education for working long hours for little money, working in unacceptable conditions for employers
who had no interest in safety.

The Factory Act, 1833 was an attempt to set up a normal working day in a single department of
industry, textile manufacture. The way in which it planned to do this was the following: The working
day was to start at 5.30 a.m. and stop at 8.30 p.m. A young person (aged thirteen to eighteen) might
not be employed beyond any period of twelve hours, excluding one and a half for meals, and a child
(aged nine to thirteen) beyond any period of nine hours. From 8.30 p.m. to 5.30 a.m.; that is during the
night, the employment of such people was forbidden.
The Factory Act of 1844 is an extremely important one in the history of family legislation. The Act
reduced the hours of work for children between eight and thirteen to six and a half a day, either in the
morning or afternoon, no child being allowed to work in both on the same day, except on alternate
days, and then only for ten hours. Young persons and women (now included for the first time) were to
have the same hours, i.e. not more than twelve for the first five days of the week (with one and a half
out for meals), and nine on Saturday.

11. The Pros And Cons Of Freedom Of Speech
Freedom of speech has central place in democratic societies. In the United States the First Amendment
protects free speech as essential right of its citizens. Other democracies, such as those in western
Europe also have free speech traditions, though none as extensive as the United States . But why
should speech be free? Speech should be free because it provides for a good government, promotes the
realization of truth, allows diversity to thrive, and is a straightforward legislative approach to speech.
Free speech allows the people to hold their government accountable via the free press. A condition of
a good government is freedom of information, and what has been called the right to know (Garton Ash
78), which is the responsibility of a free press to provide to the people, especially when the
government is not being transparent on its own. Without a press that is free to report on public
officials and the government s activity, both are able to go unchecked, at the expense of the people
they are supposed to serve. In addition to this, freedom to expose public figures activities must be
protected from frivolous accusations of libel because the ability to have a journalist accused of libel
for revealing the truth would [threaten] the informing purpose of the First Amendment (Lewis 51).
The United States embraced this idea when the Supreme Court case New York Times v. Sullivan
(1964) decision the court changed the standards that constitute libel to the statement must be false, as
well as published both knowingly and recklessly. This shifted the burden of proof from the accused to
the accuser. Not only does the press need to be free to report on the activity of the government, but the
people must be free to express their wants and needs to their government. A fair and legitimate
democracy requires that all people have a vote as well as an opportunity to have their views heard.
Garton Ash uses the words of Ronald Dworkin to explain this, a majority decision is not fair unless
everyone has had the opportunity to express his or her attitudes or opinions or fears or tastes or
presuppositions or prejudices or ideals (Garton Ash 77). Free speech allows for political views to be
expressed, so that the desires

Under the male gaze, the female body will always be sexualized no matter what choreography she is
executing, how she is dressed or what she says. This occurs because the male gaze is driven by sexual
anxiety (Schultz, 368). This means that a male feels the need to look at a woman as an object in order
to make her difference and the mystery that surrounds her seems rational in his mind. I pose the
following question, Why does this matter to my argument and to ballet? The male gaze has been
instituted within the audience and within society that art must be viewed in a certain way. The male
gaze has told viewers to believe that the ballerina is being manipulated by the male. The male gaze has

Introduction
Nowadays migration is getting to be one of the dominant characteristics of the modern world since at
the present moment that movement of people and migration of citizens from one country to another
become a norm. Not surprisingly that such unparallel and extremely high level of migration results in
substantial demographic, ethnical and socio cultural changes in many countries of the world.
In this respect, it is worthy of mention that such a situation with the migration is the result of the
recent trend in the world economy which is characterized by processes which are generally called
globalization. The process of globalization is overwhelming and involves practically all countries of
the world with rare exceptions which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Naturally, it resulted in an extreme specialization of countries that makes their economies one sided,
and consequently more exposed to economic and social crisis.
However, globalization developed international contacts and made it possible to cooperate on the
global scale. As a result, nowadays, basically due to the high level of development of IT and Internet,
specialists physically living in different countries of the world may work on one and the same product.
So, it may be said that globalization eliminated geographical boundaries between countries (Gomory
2002:187).
As for its effects, they are quite contradictive. The contrast is particularly obvious between well
developed countries and developing ones. In short, its effect may be expressed in one phrase, richer
countries become richer, and poor countries become poorer. Though it sounds a bit radical and more
precisely, it should be said that globalization makes developing countries more dependant on well
developed and it also makes practically all the countries of the world more submitted to global crisis
since their economies are closely interlinked than a crisis in one country would lead to the same effect
on economies of other countries that are its economic partners. In this respect, migration seems to be
probably the most effective by such a striking contrast that leads to high level of emigration from
developing countries and respectively high level of

Abstract:
Technology has had and imperative influence in almost every aspect of life. It has also made an
impact on how we learn today. Some question how effective learning could be via the internet, while
most stick with the familiarity of traditional classroom learning. Either option you choose still
substantiates that technology has changed the way we learn and will continue to expand on its
influences with the ways we choose to progress educationally. Each educational platform has it
disadvantages, however the advantages pose alternatives that can suit an individual s educational
needs.
With technology influencing almost every aspect of common activities, it s not unusual for it to
influence the way we learn. The traditional classroom environment is being challenged with the
implementation of online learning. With major technological advances over the last 20 years, many
traditional classroom environments have been replaced with online learning platforms that create
convenient, accelerated, and comprehensive learning opportunities around the world. Although some
would beg the differ that online learning can replace classroom education completely, online education
continues to improve allowing it to become a more trustworthy alternative for learning. Since the
traditional classroom environment pacifies familiarity in education some opt for

A comparison of the Novel, Tomorrowland and the Film, Meet the Robinsons
Although a film and a novel are completely different works of entertainment they can also be very
similar in a variety of ways. They may share the same theme, use of imagery, characters, objective, or
even emotions. The novel Tomorrowland and the film Meet the Robinsons clearly show some
similarities. Tomorrowland and Meet the Robinsons share a type of narrative hero, one who takes on a
personal mission that results in a complete renewal of society, proving the value of a single life to the
greater whole.
Both of the heroes have goals to accomplish, yet face personal struggles. In Tomorrowland, Casey

Unfortunately, Casey could never physically be there. It was only a realistic image in her head, and so
she thought! She tried to figure out why this would happen and was curious about where the pin had
come from. Casey searched for information on the web and after searching, she discovered that a

Athena tells her that Tomorrowland is real and promises to take her there and also tells her that the
future lies in her hands. In Meet the Robinsons, Lewis gets the idea that if his mother did not want him

17. Behind the Watergate Scandal Essay
On June 17, 1972, five burglars broke into the offices of the Democratic National Committee located
inside the Watergate Hotel in Washington. Frank Wills, a night security guard, discovered that the
break in was occurring. Several office doorknob cylinders were covered with masking tape to hold the
doors open (McConnell 11). As soon as Wills made this discovery, he telephoned the police. The five
burglars, carrying electronic gear and photographic equipment, were arrested on site at 2:30 A.M.
They were suspected of illegal wire tapping. This series of arrests sparked the beginning of what came
to be known as the Watergate Scandal. The Watergate Scandal caused several events to occur such as a

The reporters also revealed that John Mitchell had controlled a secret fund for financing political
spying and dirty tricks to weed out the presidential candidates of the Democratic Party. Due to those
dirty tactics, Nixon was reelected on November 7, 1972. However, on February 7, 1973, with
questions still remaining regarding the president s knowledge of the Watergate affair, the Senate voted
to establish the Senate Watergate Committee, which was charged with investigating the extent of
campaign abuses in the 1972 presidential election (McConnell 12). McCord, under oath before the
Senate Watergate Committee, testified that Jeb Magruder, former Nixon aide, and White House
counsel John Dean both were aware of the plans to bug the headquarters of the Democratic National
Committee. He also stated Mitchell had approved the plans. FBI Director L. Patrick Gray resigned
after he confessed, on April 20, 1973, that he destroyed Watergate evidence because he was pressured
by Nixon s aides. On June 25, Presidential counsel John Dean testified that Nixon had been paying the
five burglars and two operatives whom were involved in planning the Watergate break in hush money.

18. 2-Methylbutane Lab Report
For this experiment, nucleophilic substitution was first observed. The 2 methyl 2 butanol was
converted into 2 chloro 2 methylbutane by using an SN1 reaction. The alcohol on the 2 methyl 2
butanol was a tertiary alcohol. To form a good leaving group since the hydroxide ion is a bad leaving
group, the tertiary alcohol was protonated with HCl, but since it consists of a fully substituted carbon
atom from the carbon oxygen bond, an SN2 displacement cannot occur. Therefore, water is the leaving
group that disassociates and leaves a relatively stable tertiary carbocation behind. From HCl, the
chloride anion is a good nucleophile, and this adds to the available carbocation forming a carbon
chlorine bond and thus 2 chloro 2 methylbutane is the resulting ... Show more content on

The ring stand was used to make sure that the separatory funnel did not tip over and break. Then 2
methyl 2 butanol was added to the funnel along with concentrated HCl. These two chemicals were
swirled together to combine them. A glass stopper was placed on the top of the separatory funnel. It
was then inverted and vented immediately. Then the stopcock was closed, and the separatory funnel
was vigorously shaken for twenty seconds and then vented. This process was repeated. The separatory
funnel was vented frequently due to hydrochloric acid having a high vapor pressure which causes
there to be a pressurized system. This is dangerous because the buildup of pressure can cause the glass
to break and HCl to get everywhere. HCl is a very strong acid which is extremely dangerous upon
contact. After this, the separatory funnel was placed back into the ring stand, the glass stopper was
removed, and the bottom aqueous layer that separated was drained into an Erlenmeyer flask. The
separatory funnel was placed such that the bottom was resting on the top of the receiving flask to
avoid spills. Then sodium bicarbonate was slowly added, and some gas was produced. The funnel was
swirled until the bubbling ceased and the glass stopper was put on. The same process from before with
inverting and venting was repeated. After this, the separatory funnel was placed back into the ring
stand, the glass stopper was removed, and the bottom aqueous layer was drained into the same
Erlenmeyer flask as before. Some bubbling occurred when combining, so it was drained slowly. These
extracts were waste. A second wash was performed with sodium chloride solution and the third was
performed with distilled water. The organic layer was drained into a clean Erlenmeyer flask and four
spatulas of anhydrous sodium sulfate were added to the solution. The solution was swirled for about
fifteen seconds.

Missing items from Works Cited Mystery, Irony, and Imagery in The Cask of Amontillado The Cask

characters and unfolds a tale of horror and perversion. Montresor, the narrator, and Fortunato, one of
Montresor s friends, are doomed to the fate of their actions and will pay the price for their pride and
jealousy. One pays the price with his life and the other pays the price with living with regret for the

mentions his rival at wines, As you are engaged, I am on my way to Luchesi. If anyone has a critical
turn it is he (150). When asked about his cough, Fortunato replies, not with courtesy, but with prideful
determination: Let us go never the less (Doxey 266). Very often a man s prideful remarks or decisions
can get the best of him. It seems that Fortunato could not let himself be outdone. There is the theory of
perversity that Montresor tried to use to get Fortunato down into the vaults. J. Rea explains, A part of
Poe s theory of perversity is that we want to hurt or kill or to bury alive someone because he has been
good to us. It is an unbelievable desire (59). She also believes, Montresor inaccurately measures
Fortunato s intellect and succeeds in his plan only through the accident of the similarity of perversity
and courtesy (62). She believes that the courtesy of Fortunato, insisting that his cough is nothing to
worry about, is what lets them continue their trip to his death. Rea states, Perversity always makes one

22. American With Disabilities Act Into Law
More than fifty six million Americans have one or more physical disabilities. Many of these
individuals are physically able to partake in everyday activities, yet they are excluded from these
opportunities (Crockett). People with disabilities are intentionally isolated by society due to a
stereotypical assumption of their lack of abilities to participate and contribute (Harris 368). They are
viewed as objects of pity, who are unable to work, go to school, or live on their own (Crockett). Ed
Roberts, an individual with a disability, clearly states, [we] are considered the weakest, the most
helpless people in our society, [but] are the strongest, and will not tolerate segregation, [and] will not
tolerate a society which sees us as less than whole people (Laney 21). He wants to reshape the image
that society has on them and prove that people with disabilities are just as capable as everyone else.
George H.W. Bush signed the American with Disabilities Act into law on July 26, 1990. (The
Americans with Disabilities Act: A Brief overview). Bush knew that the act was powerful in its
simplicity and that it would ensure that people with disabilities [were] given the basic guarantees for

was to help people with disabilities live the American Dream and be identified by their potential and

Describe the layout and function of the various kinds of dwellings used by the Ancient Romans in the

rich usually lived in one room townhouses called an Atrium , and elite crowd escaped to their villas.
The discussion The Tenement Blocks that most of the population lived were built for quantity not
quality, housing 1.5 million people (Kamm, n.d.). I imagine these to be the equivalent of modern day
skyrise affordable apartments in the city. They were tall apartment blocks on average four to six
stories high and often constructed with wood, poorly lit and unhygienic because they had no running
water or latrine. Conditions would have been cold and lighting a fire would ve been unsafe because of
the confined space and wooden structure. Wooden shutters on the windows were also a cheaper

In The God of Small Things, Arundhati Roy describes the destruction of Velutha, an untouchable, who
is a member of the lowest social division of the Indian caste system. Velutha is marginalized and killed
by police officers who help maintain the caste system in India. Roy uses imagery, alliteration, and
juxtaposition to demonstrate that Velutha s brutal death is determined by his social position.
The gory imagery of Velutha s body being broken and shattered is presented throughout this passage
to illustrate the significance of Velutha s death as the god of small things. In the first line of the

Roy s contrast with soft and hard things creates suspense for the readers to engage with: They heard

soft tissue can be beaten by something hard as wood. Throughout the passage juxtaposition is utilized
as Roy says, Boots on Bone. On teeth (Roy 292). This line shows violence in the sense of relating to
Velutha ferocious beating as a subhuman since he is an untouchable in the Indian society. The
policemen s forcible boots damage a good man whose faith depends on the status of his social class.
Juxtaposition is also found when Roy says The muted crunch of skull on cement (Roy 292). This
creates an image of Velutha s fragile human skull being hit by hard cement that is used to break his
skull. The juxtaposition used in this passage is so vivid and important that it portrays Velutha s
destruction in great detail that shows the light vs the darkness. Her details help readers make a sense
of what Velutha is going through. Roy compares the frailty of a human s body and hard things that are

leaving the audience with a hunger to find out how the film led up to this dramatic moment.
Conspiracy begins with a close up of Songlian as she examines the padlock which secures the door of
a windowless room, depicting her as a spy like figure who is looking to unearth the secrets of the
house. As she pushes the door slightly ajar the camera tilts downwards, revealing a rope and strange
debris which lie on the floor of the room. In terms of the film as a whole, the props revealed in this
shot aptly foreshadow Meishan s hanging, yet this is done in a subtle manner which maintains the
viewer s curiosity. The sequence then cuts to a shot showing Meishan, as the male servants seize her
during the night. This shot establishes the concept of good versus evil which is a vital element of the
spy film, as we see a good character being captured by the enemy. To enhance the viewer s perception
of this idea, costume and props are given symbolic power, which reveals the film s elaborate handling
of mise en scène. Meishan s white clothes, signifying her innocence, are contrasted with the black
clothes of the servants, which characterises them as an oppressive force. Furthermore, we begin to

In le message photographique ( Communications 1, 1961), roland barthes states that photography is a
message without a code . According to him, the photographic image, as a reproduction of reality,
functions, in a first and more fundamental level, according to the regime of denotation . The
denotative impression that an image arouse, Barthes observes, is so intense to make any description
impossible considering that describing an image means to add to the denoted message a codified
message of second level: the verbal language. The denotation, however, does not exclude connotation,

30. Relationship Between Society And One s Own Personhood
According to Harry G. Frankfurt s writings, personhood is bound by one s wills and desires, and the
various ways these influence our actions. His philosophy focuses primarily on the mind and how it
guides out wills. Frankfurt, for example, does not allow for any external influences on personal
identity, nor does he allow the mind s interpretation of the body, resulting in a narrow view on one s
personhood. Susan J. Brison offers an alternative. Her piece, Outliving Oneself: Trauma, Memory, and
Personal Identity, describes the ways our relationships with both our body and society influence our
personhood. Along with Brison, ethicist J. S. Swindell s piece, Facial Allograft Transplantation,
Personal Identity, and Subjectivity, describes the effect facial allograft surgeries have on the recipients.
In this paper, I will examine the relationship between society and one s own personhood, and argue
that it is important to realize how both society and the mind s relationship with the body influences
one s self perceptions and personhood. Frankfurt s theories on personhood primarily revolve around
the relationship the mind establishes with wills and desires, as well as the preferential treatment some
wills receive over others, called second order volitions. He rejects the belief that a person is an entity
with both mental and physical properties, as this definition would allow for many non human animals
to be considered persons (Frankfurt 5). To Frankfurt, personhood

there seems to be no light in the world. However, with time, surrounding yourself with people going

CHAPTER 3 IMPLICATIONS
3.1 Introduction
Given the scale of the causes and the international ramifications, it is no wonder that a vast range of
international treaties, guidelines, conventions and local legal regulations have been established to
address human trafficking worldwide. The causes as discussed in chapter two only briefly provided
examples of the complex regional issues emerging in Southeast Asia. Chapter three will discuss and
