Tinker Vs. Des Moines Case
The case of Tinker vs. Des Moines demonstrated the need to find a balance for students and staff in
schools to have protection under not just the first amendment, but all of them, while still giving
schools authority. John Tinker and Christopher Eckhardt wore armbands to school to protest their
hostilities for the Vietnam War. They were suspended from the school for wearing them. The school
board decided it was too much of a disruption for the school. Eventually the case was then taken to
court by the fathers of the protestors. The case Tinker vs. Des Moines is significant even today, for it
shows that not always will constitutional rights win in the court of law. The case of Tinker vs. Des
Moines started when a group of adults and students ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The District Court decided that the students who petitioned the Vietnam War sought nominal damages.
Also the court believed what the school did was under its constitutional authority to prevent the
disturbance of school discipline, 9258 F. Supp. 971 (1966). The case moved on to the Court of
Appeals. The case was considered en banc, which means all the appellate judges were there to hear it.
The court was equally divided on the case, so the District Courts decision was affirmed with no
opinion from the Court of Appeals, 383 F.2d 988 (1967). The court recognized the action of the
students wearing the armbands to protest the Vietnam War was protected by the Free Speech Clause of
the First Amendment. This case was so close to pure speech , which is entitled to comprehensive
protection under the First Amendment. The District Court figured that it can t be argued that neither
teachers nor students should lose their constitutional rights when at school. The problem was that the
students freedom of speech rights collide with the school authorities rules. There was no evidence
showing that the protest disrupted any classes or work of the schools. The District Court came to their
final conclusion after looking the case over again. They decided that the action of the school
authorities was reasonable because it was based upon their fear of a disturbance from the wearing of
the armbands. In no way was the school authorities trying to deny the student s constitutional rights.
Although the students were suspended from school for protesting the Vietnam War, it was not because
they weren t protected by the First

Selective Service System Persuasive Essay
Getting a job, a college loan, a driver s license, or even citizenship are things that are usually
considered necessary for the average citizen, and unless you sign up for the Selective Service System,
you won t be able to get these very crucial things. By law, a man is required to register for the SSS
within thirty days of his 18th birthday. This means that at any point in time a man can be taken away
from his family, friends, work, and home and thrown into a literal war zone. Men in the United States
should not be required to enter the Selective Service System. Under the current draft law, according to
the official Selective Service System website, a college student can have his induction postponed only
until the end of the current semester. A senior can be postponed until the end of the full academic year.
Now, what if this young man gets murdered on the battlefield and is not able to return to receive his
degree? This young man could have been a doctor, a dentist, maybe even a dermatologist, but instead
he s just a distant memory. Back before Congress reformed the draft in 1971, a man could get out of
the draft if he was attending school, nowadays, we aren t so forgiving ( How The Draft Has Changed
Since Vietnam ). This could leave a lot of men with unquestionably promising futures stranded in the
cemeteries.

Lancelot Vs Theseus Research Paper
Nowadays we hear tales of heroes from all different cultures from all around the world, but when
looked at in detail, these stories aren t as distinctive as they may appear. Stories like that of Lancelot
or Theseus have much more in common than one may think. The first way these heroes bear
resemblance is in their chaotic families. They also had very similar childhoods, where they both
showed their superb talents. And when they finally embarked on a quest, they both had similar
outcomes. They even met and desert their love interests while on these quests. Even though these
stories have unique origins from different cultures, they still remain very much the same.
The unique family life of these heroes have a lot in common. Both Lancelot and ... Show more content

The quests that they embarked on were very similar and had similar outcomes. Both the heroes went
on quests to save people from an oppressive monster. Lancelot saved the people of Corbenic from a
dragon which was attacking their kingdom, and Theseus saved the people of Athens from the
Minotaur who needed to be fed with Athenian sacrifices. To solve these problems, they each used their
talents, swordsmanship and wrestling. Lancelot used his superior talents with his shield and sword. He
was said to use his shield to dodge the flames of the dragon, from which the town s people ran from,
and confidently sung blow with his sword till he defeated the dragon. On the contrary, Theseus won
by using his impressive wrestling skills. He grabbed the Minotaur by its horns, and threw it to the
ground, before he beat it to death with his fists. Moreover, they both were very successful in their
endeavor. Lancelot defeated the dragon with seeming ease, and the people of Corbenic celebrated him
because of it. Theseus also defeated the Minotaur with ease, and the Athenians celebrated him for it.
The difference between the heroes is how they were celebrated. Lancelot had a feast was held in his
honour. The feast lead to another line of story surrounding a highly sought after item presented to him,
the Holy Grail. Theseus, alternatively, was celebrated by the fellow captives, and eventually

What Are The Three Contemporary Theories Of American...
If asked what democracy is, many would claim that it is a government by the people a phrase
popularized by Abraham Lincoln in his Gettysburg Address. However, in today s society, there are
three prominent theories pluralism, elitism, and hyperpluralism that attempt to explain who exactly
has the power and influence in the United States of America. Each theory is centralized based on their
own ideals and conclusions about who truly governs the nation. Our democracy has components of
each of these political theories; each one has its own advantages and disadvantages. The three
contemporary theories of American democracy: pluralism, elitism, and hyperpluralism provide more
context for how policies and laws are actually created as opposed to ... Show more content on

It takes into consideration the components of pluralism and elitism. Hyperpluralism is defined as the
idea that competing interests groups have gotten too powerful making it impossible to accomplishing
anything. This can result to muddled policy and policy gridlock due to the fact that some politicians
will try to placate every group. Hyperpluralists assert that groups are the sovereign with the
government their mere servant as powerful groups let their money and power do the talking. In this
theory, average citizens are able to take part in policymaking by joining interest groups like in
pluralism. However, it is taken to another level in this theory as interest groups that lose policymaking
battles in Congress carry their agenda to the court. These groups and their members take advantage of
the court system to get what they want and to bend policies to suit their own purposes. On the other
hand, the Framers would not have expected for interest groups to gain that much power over the
government, let alone use the judicial system for their own purposes. At that time, the Framers
probably looked down on average citizens as they were illiterate, though I think that they would have
been tolerant of groups whose members were wealthy and white. It would have been harder for
interest groups to make use of the judicial system as well because judicial review is not specifically

Bobbie Ann Mason Research Paper
Southern writer Bobbie Ann Mason was born on May 1, 1940 in Mayfield, Kentucky to her parents
Wilburn and Christina Mason along with her four other siblings. It was when she was still a child that
her interest in writing emerged and she began writing stories influenced by children s mystery novels
(Bobbie Ann Mason). These works would continue to influence her writing even in her later years.
Bobbie Ann Mason is still alive today, and is approaching her older years of life, but she still publishes
work, and travels around doing book reading and signings (Bobbie Ann Mason). Her entire life has
been dedicated to writing, she attended school for it, pursued a teaching career in it, and dedicated
herself full time as a writer (Bobbie Ann Mason). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In her criticism of Mason and comparison of these three stylistically different writers, she is quoted on
an important aspect of the meaning of their, and especially Mason s, stories, Why do we read novels
and short stories? For pleasure; for instruction; for the solace of seeing others in familiar dilemmas;
for the opportunity to see what is unfamiliar, perhaps strange; for hope. These writers, in different
ways, satisfy these requirements. (Becker). Not only does she raise incredible praise for these writers,
she also gives us an opportunity to see how Mason s writing fits into the other writers of her time. She
shows us what the purpose of the short story is in Mason s world, for hope (Becker). Mason in
particular inspires this hope because although she is introducing her readers to the characters of rural
Kentucky, change is something that, on some level, every reader can relate to and understand
(Becker). This idea of understanding can even be compared and seen throughout the criticisms of
character presentation by Michiko Kakutani, who has an appreciation for the way she lays out her
characters to her audience, and the commentary by Robert Newman on how she relates to her readers
through her characters. The way these two appreciate Bobbie Ann Mason s character development is
the same way that Robin Becker appreciates how she presents the story itself to her

evangelical churches have had the largest growth. There are a number of reasons for the growth of
evangelical churches in the last two decades of the twentieth century. First, Catholics were often
targets of government repression for their subversive involvement in base Christian communities,
while evangelicals were safe from government repression. Second, the evangelical emphasis on
personal conversion is considered apolitical. Finally, small evangelical churches provide their
members with a strong sense of community and family. During my whole life, my family and religion

Here, you do not have to restrict yourself to think about the very obvious options, rather you can use
your creative skills and come out with alternatives that may look a little irrelevant. This is important
because sometimes solutions can come out from these out of the box ideas. You would also have to do
adequate research to come up with the necessary facts that would aid in solving the problem. By
interacting with customers he gathered fresh ideas that require comfortable seats and entertainment in

the gates were occupied.
Evaluate the Alternatives: This can be said to be the one of the most important stages of the decision
making process. This is the stage where you have to analyze each alternative you have come up with.
You have to find out the advantages and disadvantages of each option. This can be done as per the
research you have done on that particular alternative. At this stage, you can also filter out the options
that you think are impossible or do not serve your purpose. Rating each option with a numerical digit

Natural Selection Dbq
But natural selection is not random
Another confusing argument you may hear from a pro evolutionist is the idea that evolution is in fact
not random, and is not due to chance. They argue that evolution through natural selection is actually
not chance at all. The reason being is that natural selection is in simple terms, survival of the fittest. It
is logical. It is expected. If there is only enough food to sustain 20% of the population of a species, it
is the strongest (or rather the most able at obtaining the food) 20% that will get the food and survive
and reproduce. This is not down to chance; this is an expected and predictable outcome.
Now, it does seem reasonable to accept this line of argument from pro evolutionists. Natural selection
is not improbable because it happens gradually over a vast amount of time. It is not chance; it is
inevitability. They argue that a supernatural intelligence cannot be responsible for this selection
because it is too tiresome, cumbersome, and essentially would be a waste of their time, in fact making
natural selection the only plausible solution. But, whilst this all seems logical and irrefutable, we must
remember they are only talking about natural selection, and how nature favours and selects the fittest
members of a species. They are only talking about the mechanism of how certain traits and
characterises are favoured and selected. They are not talking about the random mutations that occur in
order ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is because the origin and cause of the supernatural creator cannot be explained. However, this
line of argument relies on the premise that complexity must follow simplicity which is actually a
product of evolutionary theory itself and subsequently should be considered as circular reasoning.
This can be explained as

Political Ignorance And Its Impact On Politics
A popular Government, without popular information, or the means of acquiring it, is but a Prologue to
a Farce or a Tragedy; or, perhaps both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance: And a people who
mean to be their own Governors, must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives. A
quote by James Madison, the author of the bills of rights, in a letter he wrote to W.T. Barry. Even
James Madison was talking about ignorance in his day. However, that is not altogether surprising
considering people were less informed and less educated in his era. Today citizens have arrived at a
dangerous place of ignorance, and that political ignorance seems to be growing and flourishing. I will
admit, I myself, have been found guilty of this very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Political corruption is one major challenge Mr. Smith comes across. There is a saying in the Bible,
which says, The love of money is the root of all evil. Sadly, Mr. Smith encounters that evil when he
realizes that Senator Paine, one of his role models, is under the grip and control of Mr. Taylor s
manipulation, so much so that they lie when a special committee reviews Mr. Smith s motives for
trying to pass the bill to build the boy s camp. After seeing all of the deceit and darkness Mr. Smith
says, Well, I m gettin out of this town so fast, away from all the words and all the monuments and the
whole rotten show. Mr. Smith, recognizes and calls out the wicked trickery as a game that is being
played. Unfortunately, history is overflowing with examples of corruption such as this, as many
politicians have been swayed by the promise of wealth, fortune, and even one might comment,
seduction. There is corruption, bribery, and deceit found throughout history. Simply search corruption
in politics and articles upon articles pull up referencing scandals and lies committed by those in Senate
or any other branch of government. Take President Bill Clinton, for example, and his many lies
denying the fact that he had unhealthy relations with another woman besides his wife. Another
example would be Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. who was accused, around 2012, of using money provided by
donors to spruce up his home. So, how do these circumstances

American Sniper Analysis
How does Clint Eastwood generate emotional response in American Sniper (2014) I am going to
micro analyse the scene from American sniper when Chris Kyle, played by Bradley Cooper shoots a
Taliban soldier carrying a rocket launcher and a little boy then picks it up. American Sniper is a film

The audience feel that this is the way that all snipers behave and provides them with an insight in to
the emotions, or lack of emotions, that they need to become effective killers. The main sound that the
audience hear throughout the scene is the heavy breathing from Bradley Cooper. This sound effect
helps to increase the tension that the viewer feels and also emphasises the importance of breath control
for a sniper. Anyone with any knowledge on snipers knows they take deep breaths to focus their shots
and stop the sway of the rifle. The inclusion of this sound effect and the acting fit all the conventions
of a sniper and make Cooper s performance feel real. When the shot changes to a close upshot of the
finger on the trigger slowly pulling it builds the tension as the viewers are left wondering whether or
not he will shoot or whether the Taliban soldier will drop the weapon. The colour palette for the
selected scene in American sniper is a desert yellow and dull colours for the surrounding areas.
Bradley Cooper s outfit for this scene is an American marine desert storm uniform. This is a mix
between yellow and brown which blends perfectly into the set. The set in American sniper seems well
thought out as the area around the cross hair is secluded and there is nothing around this creates the
atmosphere that they are out in the open and the sniper can see

How Did The Us Military Influence Ww2
The US Military had a great influence over the Second World War. Their Military is strong, but like
every other military it all comes down to the discipline and hard working Soldiers that shape a
military. The Average US soldier went through a brief but highly rigorous basic training session and
then other forms of training thereafter. Every soldier was trained in a specific task to carry out and
work together as one unit of being. An Army is a combination of multiple parts acting as one. As for
the Draft wanted men at the age between 21 45, must be at satisfactory Pristine health with no
physical complications or illnesses. As these made combat very difficult(The National WWII
Museum). The US Government and many people throughout the country believed they would be
dragged into the Second World War eventually. As the war progressed more and more Men and some
women were being Drafted, further growing what would become the greatest military in the world. All
while not being in the war. After Pearl Harbor, there was a dramatic increase in the number of recruits
for enlistment as well as a draft for the US Army. Leading to a stronger, largely populated military
force. People say quality over quantity but a force cannot be beaten that exhibits both characteristics.

The Relationship Between Antony And Cleopatra

They attempted to conquer land with one another, establishing themselves and their children as the

The Romans had laws against foreign marriages and Cleopatra was nearly the epitome of everything
non Roman. Antony and Octavian had a complicated relationship, ending in Octavian defeating both
him and Cleopatra. Antony knew that marrying Cleopatra before 32 BC was dangerous, as his wife,
Octavia, was Octavian s sister. Having two wives was illegal, but also abandoning a member of
Octavian s family, would have broken the relationship much quicker. There is no doubt about a
relationship between Antony and Cleopatra; they had children together and presented themselves
alongside one another. The coinage of the two can be seen as them presenting their marriage. On the
other hand, it could simply mean that they had a political relationship more than a romantic
relationship. For some, that would mean that they needed to marry each other. However, for the power
that each person held, a marriage would not have been so heavily enforced. For people of the upper
class, some rules dictated by society did not always apply to them. Modern and ancient ideals about
marriage does not translate to every situation flawlessly. Ager s main point is that there is no hard

Black Holes, By John Archibald Wheeler
Black holes are one of the most mysterious aspects of the Universe. Scientists know that black holes
contain an insane amount of matter packed into a small space with a gravitational field so intense that
not even light can escape it. This review will focus primarily on what is known about black holes, how
scientists know black holes exist, current studies and experiments, and why they are studied. Based off
the knowledge humans have already uncovered about black holes, they could change the future. Black
holes could realistically be used to power starships, enabling humans to travel at near light speed to
explore the Cosmos. Humans would be able to conquer the most unknown frontier yet.

Gamma ray bursts from collisions or collapses signify the birth of a new black hole. Immense amounts
of energy are released during formations, and it is at the center of a black hole, its singularity, that the
laws of physics break down. As claimed by NASA, during each formation of a black hole, the black
hole will reach an event horizon , where time appears to slow to an outside observer. See Figure 1 to
view the parts of a black hole. Eventually during formation, time will stop, the star will not collapse
anymore, and it will be frozen. To an outside observer, an object that reaches the event horizon and
falls into a black hole would appear to never fully go in. This is because of the process called
Spaghettification , which explains that if a human were to fall in, the force of gravity of their feet
would be millions of times greater than the force on their head, so in a literal sense, they would stretch
out and become flat before going in. It would literally appear to be an illusion because to the human
falling in, time passes normally, yet slows for an outside observer. Time was discovered to slow near
black holes when it was observed that light curves and bends when nearing a black hole. The only way
to explain this bend is with Einstein s theory of general relativity and his concept of space time. Space
time is the idea that space is actually a fabric that is warped by gravity. Einstein concluded that space
and time cannot be effected without

in the form of excitement and suspense. These internal events are also the climax. Arnold Friend, the

The Kyoto Protocol and The Green Movement
The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention
on climate change, which commits its parties by setting internationally binding emission reduction
targets. Kyoto was seen only as the short term costs of compliance, not the long term planetary
benefits. Under the Protocol, countries must meet their targets primarily through national measures.
However, the Protocol also offers them an additional means to meet their targets by way of three
market based mechanisms.

Within The United States the Clinton administration was silent and the Bush administration actively

other rapidly modernizing economies to use primarily carbon spewing coal fired power plants so they
could hurtle into the 21st century with early 20th century power sources. The Kyoto Protocol
recognized that developed countries are principally responsible for the current high levels of GHG
emissions in the atmosphere as a result of more than 150 years of industrial activity. The Protocol
placed a heavier burden on developed nations under the principle of common but differentiated
responsibilities. China then made a deliberate choice to lag the world in energy efficiency since it has
been so eager to just have more energy. Al Gore soon made himself a spokesman for the Kyoto
Protocol and a middleman to help diffuse the tension between The United States and China. He said
that neither the United States nor China should be allowed to blame the other, or anyone else, for the
failure of each nation to do its part. Gore s nation has the practical responsibility to lead the way. One

The Consequences Of Herding Behavior Of Financial Traders
Abstract:
This report sets out to analyze the causes and the consequences of herding behavior of financial
traders, emphasizing the impact on financial markets efficiency and stability. Moreover, it contributes
to formalize the role of policy makers, how they react to herding behavior and what measures they can
take to curtail it. This paper is divided into three section: Section 1 introduces herding behavior;
Section 2 analyzes origin and consequences of herding and its repercussion on Efficient Market
Hypothesis theory; Section 3 focuses on the role of policy makers and what they can do to curtail
herding.

Therefore, as presented by West (1988), it is necessary to identify a behavioral model which can
highlight the importance and the impact of psychological and irrational behaviors that can explain the
latest financial crisis and asset bubbles. The greatest support of what can be defined as Behavioral
Finance comes from Shiller (1984), who believes that financial behaviors are influenced by social
movements. To explain return patterns that are anomalous from the classical viewpoint of EMH, it is
necessary to introduce either market imperfections or failures of human rationality (Hirshleifer et.al,
2003). Herding is one of many psychological factors and biases that influences markets stability and
can be identified as the cause of many stock markets bubbles and crashes. Moreover herding leads to
unhedgeable systemic risk and causes markets failure to reflect all relevant information.
Section 2
Herd behavior occurs when investors, firms or analysts take the same action and/or base their
decisions according to others behaviors (Spyrou, 2013) and follow the crowd (i.e. switching from
buying to selling and reverse). It is present in a market when individuals imitate better informed
investors trading strategies rather than acting upon their own beliefs and private information.
Moreover, herding must be distinguished from what is known as spurious herding . Spurious traders,

Similarities Between Funeral And Pericles Funeral
We often like to think that over the course of two millennia we change a lot. In many ways we do, our
technology advances, we become more knowledgeable, and we as people evolve. However, we do not
evolve in every way that we perhaps should. An example we can look at to see the ways some things
have not changed much through examining two similar documents. Written in drastically different
time periods, you would not think Lincoln s Gettysburg Address and Pericles s Epitaph would really
have much in common. The two funeral orations do share their fair share of similarities in addition to
their differences, though. To understand how the two documents compare we must first look at the
context of both the Epitaph and the Gettysburg Address. Pericles s Epitaph was written roughly 2,000
years ago during the beginning of the Peloponnesian Wars. It comes to us through Thucydides in his
history The Peloponnesian War. Pericles spoke after the first year of battle in the winter, and his
speech was delivered at a public funeral for all those that were slain during the war. This is why his
speech is often called the Funeral Oration of Pericles. He had been a general at the time and a natural
choice to deliver a speech on those who died in battle. In addition to his status though, Pericles had a
reputation for speaking only when it was truly important. Thus, the people would know how important
this speech was and more importantly they would get the message Pericles was trying to get

12 Monkeys Anthropology
12 Monkeys is a 1995 film directed by Terry Gilliam in 1995. It is a science fiction film dealing with
time travel. Time travel stories have been used in different films and other art media, but 12 Monkeys
treats time travel in an unusual way. It is reasonable to say that 12 Monkeys does not have a very clear
narrative like other classic Hollywood films do. And this messiness is mostly caused by how the film
itself deals with time travel and how it presents it to viewers. 12 Monkeys creates an uncertainty of
time travel. This sort of uncertainty does make the narrative less comprehensible, however, it is this
uncertainty that attracts the audience.
The story of 12 Monkeys itself is not very hard to understand. The story happens in 2035. Because ...

Essay Summary of Thoreau
Synopsis Economy: This is the first chapter and also the longest by far. Thoreau begins by outlining
his project: a two year and two month stay at a crude cabin in the woods near Walden Pond. He does
this, he says, in order to illustrate the spiritual benefits of a simplified lifestyle. He easily supplies the
four necessities of life (food, shelter, clothing, and fuel). He meticulously records his expenditures and
earnings, demonstrating his understanding of economy, as he builds his house and buys and grows
food. For a home and freedom, he spends a mere $25. Complementary Verses: This chapter consists
entirely of a poem, The Pretensions of Poverty, by seventeenth century English poet Thomas Carew.
The poem criticizes those who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To him, the railroad symbolizes the destruction of the good old pastoral way of life. Following is a
description of the sounds audible from his cabin: the church bells ringing, carriages rattling and
rumbling, cows lowing, whip poor wills singing, owls hooting, frogs croaking, and cockerels crowing.
Solitude: Thoreau rhapsodizes about the beneficial effects of living solitary and close to nature. He
loves to be alone, for I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude, and he is
never lonely as long as he is close to nature. He believes there is no great value to be had by rubbing
shoulders with the mass of humanity. Visitors: Thoreau writes about the visitors to his cabin. Among
the 25 or 30 visitors is a young Canadian woodchopper, whom Thoreau idealizes as approaching the
ideal man, and a runaway slave, whom Thoreau helps on his journey to freedom in Canada. The Bean
Field: Thoreau relates his efforts to cultivate two and a half acres of beans. He plants in June and
spends his summer mornings weeding the field with a hoe. He sells most of the crop, and his small
profit of $8.71 covers his needs. The Village: Thoreau visits the small town of Concord every day or
two to hear the news, which he finds as refreshing in its way as the rustle of the leaves. Nevertheless,
he fondly but rather contemptuously compares Concord to a gopher colony. In late summer, he is
arrested for refusing to pay

Smell And Odor And Emotion
INTRODUCTION
Often, one of the most overlooked of the five senses is the ability to smell. Living things use it every
day from figuring out what the best scent is to eat the most delicious food to figuring out what
perfume makes us the happiest (and potentially, the most attractive to others). However, smell is more
than just the stench someone gives off. In fact, odor can trigger a variety of emotions. To begin the
discussion on the relationship between odor and emotion, one must define what an odor is. More than
just a sense, smell consists of molecules that recognized by olfactory receptors and must have a
specific concentration (Yantis, 2014). With much research, a relationship between memory and odor
has existed and has led to broader findings about odor and other components. According to a 2009
study, a relationship between odor and mood exists (Croy et al., 2011). However, research done
regarding odor and emotion is a fairly recent interest and has gained more attention over the last few
years. According to the American Psychological Association, an emotion is a complex pattern of
changes, including physiological arousal, feelings, cognitive processes, and behavioral reactions,
made in response to a situation perceived to be personally significant (APA, n.d.).
BACKGROUND: MEMORY COMPONENT A key piece of the odor emotion relationship comes
from the ability to remember odors over time. Odor and memory have been studied at great extent and
tends to overshadow the

Form and Meaning of Happiness in Plato
An Analysis of the Form and Meaning of Happiness in Plato s Republic
I. Introduction
One of the central claims of Plato s Republic is that justice is not only desirable for its own sake, but
that it maximises the happiness of those who practice it. This paper examines Plato s arguments in
support of this thesis to determine (a) what he means by happiness, (b) to what extent it exists in his
proposed ideal state, and (c) whether this in any way substantiates his claims about the benefits of
justice. In particular, I will argue that there are two different conceptions of happiness at play in The
Republic, and two methods of achieving its highest form, namely the pursuit of justice and
philosophy, before arriving at a final definition of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, although this provides us with a way of categorising pleasure, it does not bring us any closer
to a theory of happiness, as there is no suggestion that it too has three different forms. From this I
conclude that Plato considers the notion of pleasure to be insufficient as an explanation of happiness,
and that these instead represent two different, but interrelated, concepts.
III. Happiness and Justice
In order to fully appreciate what Plato means by eudaimonia, we must instead consider the ways in
which it is supposedly achieved: namely, through the twin pursuits of justice and philosophy. The first
argument for this thesis is found at the end of Book 1 (352d 354a) where Socrates states that
everything has both a characteristic function and a virtue (or excellence) that enables it to perform its
function well. He goes on to say that living is the function of the soul, and justice its characteristic
excellence, from which it follows that the just man lives well and is therefore happy. This is a classic
piece of Socratic wordplay that relies upon a disputed, question begging premise (justice being the
virtue of the soul), two unsubstantiated assumptions (that the soul has both a function and an
excellence) and equivocation ( to live well is the same as to be happy ), all of which renders it

Abstract/Summary
The aim of my individual research project was to find out whether or not our local community would
like to see equal marriage rights for Australian same sex couples. I created and conducted interviews
and surveys based around the question of Marriage Equality. Should Australian same sex couples be
allowed to marry?
By doing this research project, I hoped to achieve information about the issues faced by same sex
couples and primarily, the societal attitudes towards the group. Before I started, I believed that my
project would show that the majority of people surveyed and interviewed on the topic of

The Confederate Flag Is A Flag Of Hate
Is the Confederate flag really a flag of hate? Contrary to popular belief, the Confederate flag does not
stand for racism, it stands for freedom. It stands for the men who lost their lives fighting for a doomed
country, white and black. It stands for not letting others push you around and control you. I stands for
the bad side in the Civil War. It is the proof that despite the fact that we boast about being stubborn,
we are ignorant to the fact that all we do is follow the crowd. It represents a piece of history incredibly
rich, yet so full of sorrow, that we are trying to erase. But people do not see this, they only see hate,
and they are too oblivious to truly understand what this symbol of liberty stands for. This is why the ...

In fact, the Emancipation Proclamation states that only the slaves in the southern states were free,
about 25% of the original slave population was still legally allowed to be enslaved. Lincoln himself
admitted I would do it if I were not afraid that half the officers would fling down their arms and three
more states would rise. Meaning that he feared he would lose half his army (that all were anti slavery )
to the South, and three more states would rebel. This proves that he was more worried about losing the
war (and the base of the Union economy), than slavery continuing. Also, there was a higher mortality
rate for free slaves living in the north, this is why; factory work was one of the only jobs available to
immigrants and former slaves. The conditions were horrendous, and most of them died doing a job
that paid peanuts. If the Union was even more racist than the Confederacy, why did we become biased
against Confederates? Before the war, Nathan Bedford Forrest was one of the wealthiest men in the

The Effects Of Radioactive Wastes On The Environment
Introduction
Radiation in the environment is widespread and a necessary process for the existence of life. We
encounter it from natural sources like rocks, soils and the sun1,2 and from modern technology such as
computed tomography better known as CT scan, and nuclear power plants. Radiation from sunlight is
essential but too much of it can be harmful, just as the use of radiation in CT scans. Computed
tomography can provide lifesaving information about disease but in high doses can also cause disease.

The Background, Origin and Threats
The nuclear age began on those faithful days in August 1945 when the United States dropped two
atomic bombs, one in Hiroshima and the other in Nagasaki, Japan bringing an end to the Second
World War. With this new age also came about the United Nations (UN), which established the UN
Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) so they can address any concerns and problems that would come
from the atomic energy breakthrough.3 In 1953, President Dwight D. Eisenhower addressed the world
and spoke about Atoms for Peace and in 1957 this led to the establishment of the International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA).3
In 1946 the US Congress established the Atomic Energy Act of 1946 and was regulated by the Atomic
Energy Commission. 3,4 This was later replaced by the Atomic Energy Act of 1954 that led to the
development and use of nuclear power commercially. 5 Currently there are approximately 439 nuclear
reactors that produce about 16 percent of the electricity around the world, and nine countries get over
40 percent of their energy from nuclear power production. 3
Once the IAEA was created its mission was to safeguard the international community by ensuring that
nuclear power was used in a safe and peaceful manner. In

Analysis Of Sylvia Plath s The Bell Jar
Literature often illustrates the mundane is such a manner that the imagination of the common reader is
spurred into a world of emotions that previously remained untapped or dormant. To elicit such a
response requires the ability of a powerful writer that often in tandem achieves notoriety that
transcends generations; for example, Sylvia Plath left a significant impression on the world, especially
that of writing, despite her early passing at the age of thirty. It can be seen that the work of Sylvia
Plath is often idolized due to the broad and relatable nature of the subject matter that is emotional
strife; this work, then, is of great value to society and the world of literature as it teaches those reading
that emotion is not something sparse, but wholehearted and running through the veins of every
individual. Plath is most well known for her work that was heavily influenced by her ongoing mental
illness, clinical depression. The vast majority of her poems, if not all, covered the subject of her
emotional struggles she faced throughout her life. This can be seen within her novel The Bell Jar,
which is her most admired and studied publication (as well as required in most curriculums across the
United States). Notably, The Bell Jar was published less than a month before her suicide in the
beginning of 1963. The raw nature of her writing is what drew a wide spectrum of people in, for all
people have emotions, but she was one of the few that dared to publicize thoughts that

Critical Analysis Of Their Eyes Were Watching God
Brian Sandoval 11/11/17
Mr. Amoroso AP Literature Their Eyes Were Watching God LAP Topic 4 To find the elusive and
coveted treasure of love, a dauntless expedition is untaken into life s catacombs, scouring through the
tunnels and evading the traps that lurk in the shadowy corners. This journey can t be completed
without sorrow and suffering yet the marring of the soul from the journey can break a person s
resolve, ultimately believing that the treasure they once sought was merely a fable. Due to being
caught in the trap of despair and hopelessness, survivors mold a chitin from the pain endured in order
to shield themselves from additional pain, often reluctant to peer their head out of their protective
ward. At the same time, by hiding in the confines of a cocoon, they are unable to view the opportunity
and take the plunge once more that may finally reward their sacrifice. Janie May Crawford, the
protagonist of Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, in her youth and inexperience
goes through many trials and tribulations in the search of love and what it truly is. Janie paints a
beautiful and naïve image of love as her dreams and hopes blind her from reality. The experience
garnered from her relationships with her three spouses, the illusion of her youth is swept, remolding
her painting into its true form. Janie, a young woman, began to dwell on thoughts of love and marriage
as these new curiosities blossomed within her and spent her free

Binary Opposition In Euripides
Binary Opposition in the Works of Euripides Binary opposition, as defined by Corey Marvin simply
describes a pair of theoretical opposites or thematic contrasts. Euripides uses binary opposition as an
effective literary device in both the Medea and the Bacchae. One of the overarching dichotomies in
both works is masculinity versus femininity. In the Medea, the protagonist flips the gender roles, and
in the Bacchae, Dionysus androgynous nature allows him to often adopt a feminine persona in the
play. Many binary oppositions are encompassed in that of masculinity versus femininity, a few of
which are aggressiveness versus docility, intelligence versus ignorance, and the understandable versus
the mysterious. Medea exhibits typical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These women, who are typically docile and reserved are the complete opposite while worshiping
Dionysus. They dance, make music and even hunt and kill animals with their bare hands, (Bacchae
736 737). . it is the Bacchae who kill Pentheus, dismissing forever the idea that they are purely
domestic. As the messenger relays, [a]ll the women, with blood spattered hands, were playing ball
with Pentheus flesh (1135). In the Medea, the dichotomy of intelligence versus ignorance is shown
when the protagonist s cunning is severely underestimated by all those around her. Jason believes that
she is foolish for carrying on as she does; he says, [y]ou women have come to such a point to think, if
things go right in bed, you have everything, (569 570) but he misses that she is angry about her station
in life and intends to change it. As Shirley A Barlow explains in Stereotype and Reversal in the
Medea, The protagonist is aware of more than the fact that she suffers and injustice. She is aware that
the root cause is beyond herself. (Barlow 160). Creon seems to glimpse what she is capable of when
he tells her that he fears her (282), but he still allows her to stay in Corinth for one more day, (355 6)
proving that he is ignorant after all. Medea is far more clever than the men around her and she knows
how to manipulate them. When she appeals to Creon (340) and later

The Argument Of Creation Vs. Evolution
The argument of Creation vs. Evolution has been debated for quite sometime. Since Darwin s theory
of Evolution by Natural Selection was published, some of those that thought the world and its
inhabitants was made by a creator now began to think differently. Evolution began to make sense,
there was evidence of certain types of species evolving (as in the finches in the galapogos islands as
observed by Darwin) however, with creationism there was no evidence, it was all based on faith.
Although Darwin s theory stands at the forefront for the belief in Evolution especially for those that
tend to lean towards this side of the argument, there have been and still is many who support the
argument of Design or what is referred to as the teleological argument. Philosophers such as St.
Thomas Aquinas and William Paley wrote about the belief in there being a creator in their famous
works. David Hume, William Derham and Richard Bentley to name a few also wrote about intelligent
design. I believe in Creationism. I believe that the universe and everything in it came into existence
because of a higher intelligence and not solely from a primordial soup and if in fact everything did
start out as a soup, all the ingredients for this soup was put together by the head chef. In researching
this topic, I believe that creationism and evolution (micro evolution) can co exist without one
absolutely refuting the other. I believe this designer created existence in such a way that evolution is

place to be a relaxation centre for the community in an area. The place has to be larger than private

For the first concept, I intended the space to be of different heights, to show that some spaces need
more privacy than the other. The cellar has to has more privacy than the belvedere and hearth and
bathe space is in between,
The belvedere has to have big openings (windows) so that the occupant of the space can see the best

The next step ws to integrate the cellar design (overall form), to match the ground level plan and to
create the best pathway to access all the four spaces, to create an amazing architectural experience.

I intended the cellar to be a dark place, with low amount of light entering the space. However, still

I experimented with arrangement of cards vertically cards with certain intervals to direct the whole

Picture Paris And Bicycle Thieves Similarities
Sometimes people forget that food is an art and that it has the power to move us emotionally just as
music, literature and paintings can. Picture Paris and Bicycle Thieves are two films that both employ
the usage of narrative devices hand in hand with food to develop the characters and their family
bonds. Although each narrative revolves around the central themes of food, family and dignity the two
are developed in radically different ways. The Bicycle Thieves uses the concept of neorealism to

stage of their life. Although they are typically black or brown, the albino variety is more common,
which is also quite weird. They can be quite large, and can grow up to a foot! It is neotenic, meaning

Social Disadvantages Of STEM
STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) is a rapidly growing educational and job
field in this technologically advancing world. It is also starting to include more women, though not as
many as one would consider equal . Although women make up 48% of the overall work force, they
only fill 24% of STEM jobs (Beede et al. 1). Additionally, there is a lower amount of women than men
graduating from colleges with degrees in STEM fields. Why is the man to woman ratio so drastically
uneven in college STEM programs? Why do women have a higher rate of changing from a STEM
major to something else? How can this be a problem for development in the field? How can this be
remedied? For the sake of simplicity, all statistics apply to white men and women unless stated
otherwise. It is common knowledge that the STEM field is overrun by men, with over 75% if STEM
jobs being held by men in 2009 (Beede et al. 1). This fact in itself is something that repels women
from delving into the field. Women start out with a social disadvantage when it comes to pursuing a
STEM degree. There is often little to no support, especially from men, when they express interest in it.
Even after attaining a degree and being hired, there may not be a sense of unity between the few
women that are in the field. ... about three fourths of the women scientists surveyed reported that
women in their work environments supported each other. And yet about a fifth of the scientists
surveyed reported I feel

What Steroids Can Do To Your Body
A bloodcurdling feeling spreads throughout the arena, a smell so menacing that even the men inside
the ring don t know what will happen next. The roars of men are zipping through the air as bodies are
torn limb from limb. Grotesque as this image may be only a few hundred years ago were people
competing in stadiums adorned by thousands of viewers. Competition has always been a part of
human nature, ever since the first man put his foot onto this planet the race has been on. Certainly
competition has changed as years have gone by. First we competed for food on a daily basis,
competition was needed in order to just make it through the day, as many years began to pass
competition began to turn into daze in which people could watch others fight for their lives fighting
against creatures from other parts of the world unknown to their own. Today, we no longer face the
life or death bouts over a single meal. The sense of competition has not dulled, yet it has been moved
from a daily survival to more of an extravagance for viewers to behold the abilities of others in awe.
These days, the most anticipated competitions are held in football stadiums, boxing rings, and weight
rooms. The rewards for today s gladiators consist of bragging rights over a rival, worldwide notoriety,
and large sums of money. Being the best at what we do, getting the feeling that you are number one is
what we as humans have always strived for. No matter what the cost had been we always took another

Kauai Life In The 1800s
As the oldest island in Hawaii, Kauai has a wealth of history. Over the years, it has gone from ancient
battlefields to a modern economy. First inhabited around 200 to 600 AD, the original settlers most
likely reached Kauai from the Marquesas Islands nearly 2,000 miles away. Since these early
immigrants arrived, an estimated 1,000 of the 1,300 species on Kauai have gone extinct. Centuries
later, the Tahitians arrived and took over the island from the shorter Marquesans.
The Arrival of James Cook
Over the next few centuries, the Tahitians created a civilized society with a strong culture, religion and
laws. Wailua was set up as a sacred birthing ground for the royal family due to its sacredness to the
society. The early of the traditions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Christian missionaries began arriving in Kauai in the 1800s. In 1820, they set up the first mission
house in Waimea. The old kapu system was removed as Christian laws took over. While the reading
and writing taught by missionaries preserved Hawaiian culture for posterity, the daily culture of the
natives was slowly destroyed.
Kauai Experiences an Economic Boom
As Westerners arrived, Kauai quickly became a leading sugar producer. In Koloa Town, a sugar mill
helped to drive this economic boom. Quickly, other entrepreneurs followed suit to create sugar
plantations. They brought in immigrants from across the world to boost the workforce. These new
immigrants gave rise to the unique blend of cultures that exist within Kauai today.
For a brief time period, sugar and pineapple production comprised a large part of the economy. As
these industries fell, tourism became increasingly popular. Ultimately, Kauai lost its constitutional
monarchy in 1893. A group of foreigners conspired to end the Kingdom of Hawaii because the
constitution that was being amended was not in their best interests. Following a revolution, Hawaii
became a United States territory in the 1900s. Later on, it joined the United States as a state in

Ethical Treatment of Animals
ETHICAL TREATMENT OF ANIMALS
If you systematically question the significance and use of existence you are a philosopher, either
amateur or expert. Ethics is the division of philosophy that asks how nation supposed to live their lives
and how they ought to act good and right to each one. Animal ethics is equal but contains animals.
Robert Garner in his book Animal Ethics says Animal ethics look to examine values that are
apprehended concerning the moral standing of non human animals. (Audi, 2010).
Our correlation with animals is based on values we take in from our background and social way of
life. We recognize these values, frequently on conviction from our seniors, without testing or studying
them. But unexamined values when performed can do massive destruction everybody has a few
contact with animals straight or not directly, either agricultural or shooting animals, eating them,
providing food to their pets factory farmed animals, going to the zoo, by means of weathered
substances on animals or washing with animal based soap. Hitherto the largest part of nation do not
understand the pain and damage people inflict on animals since it goes mainly out of view and where
it peaks on top of the surface it is endured as usual.
Here is the point. The damage humans are doing to animal s amounts to a holocaust that we have to
take in hand (Audi, 2010). If we are to make refined evolution we have to understand what we are
doing to animals and consider on how we ought treating

Essay On Presidential Pardon Power
The Presidential Pardon Power and its Limits The power to pardon is not the most discussed power of
the President of the United States. However, there have been some controversial cases that sparked the
debate about limiting this power. This paper deals with the origins of this constitutional clause, its
limits and interpretations by the Supreme Court of the United States. I would like to mention some
controversial cases and connected debate about limiting this power. Origins of the Presidential Pardon
The roots of the pardon can be traced far back in the history. There are references to similar power in
Mosaic Law, Greek Law and Roman Law. However, the U.S. constitutional clause originated in the
English law. The law was applied in the colonies and the colonial governors held similarly broad
pardon powers as the Kings. Except a simple pardon, they could also grant conditional pardon to any
offender. The original plans for the Constitution did not contain a power of pardon. However, the main
proponents of pardoning power Charles Pinckney, Alexander Hamilton, and John Rutledge managed
to push through the inclusion of this clause. After a debate about this power during the Constitutional
Convention, the presidential pardon clause was added into the Constitution as one of the enumerated
powers of the President of the United States. It can be found in the Article II of the Constitution. It
says: The President ... shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for

  • 2. Tinker Vs. Des Moines Case The case of Tinker vs. Des Moines demonstrated the need to find a balance for students and staff in schools to have protection under not just the first amendment, but all of them, while still giving schools authority. John Tinker and Christopher Eckhardt wore armbands to school to protest their hostilities for the Vietnam War. They were suspended from the school for wearing them. The school board decided it was too much of a disruption for the school. Eventually the case was then taken to court by the fathers of the protestors. The case Tinker vs. Des Moines is significant even today, for it shows that not always will constitutional rights win in the court of law. The case of Tinker vs. Des Moines started when a group of adults and students ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The District Court decided that the students who petitioned the Vietnam War sought nominal damages. Also the court believed what the school did was under its constitutional authority to prevent the disturbance of school discipline, 9258 F. Supp. 971 (1966). The case moved on to the Court of Appeals. The case was considered en banc, which means all the appellate judges were there to hear it. The court was equally divided on the case, so the District Courts decision was affirmed with no opinion from the Court of Appeals, 383 F.2d 988 (1967). The court recognized the action of the students wearing the armbands to protest the Vietnam War was protected by the Free Speech Clause of the First Amendment. This case was so close to pure speech , which is entitled to comprehensive protection under the First Amendment. The District Court figured that it can t be argued that neither teachers nor students should lose their constitutional rights when at school. The problem was that the students freedom of speech rights collide with the school authorities rules. There was no evidence showing that the protest disrupted any classes or work of the schools. The District Court came to their final conclusion after looking the case over again. They decided that the action of the school authorities was reasonable because it was based upon their fear of a disturbance from the wearing of the armbands. In no way was the school authorities trying to deny the student s constitutional rights. Although the students were suspended from school for protesting the Vietnam War, it was not because they weren t protected by the First ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Selective Service System Persuasive Essay Getting a job, a college loan, a driver s license, or even citizenship are things that are usually considered necessary for the average citizen, and unless you sign up for the Selective Service System, you won t be able to get these very crucial things. By law, a man is required to register for the SSS within thirty days of his 18th birthday. This means that at any point in time a man can be taken away from his family, friends, work, and home and thrown into a literal war zone. Men in the United States should not be required to enter the Selective Service System. Under the current draft law, according to the official Selective Service System website, a college student can have his induction postponed only until the end of the current semester. A senior can be postponed until the end of the full academic year. Now, what if this young man gets murdered on the battlefield and is not able to return to receive his degree? This young man could have been a doctor, a dentist, maybe even a dermatologist, but instead he s just a distant memory. Back before Congress reformed the draft in 1971, a man could get out of the draft if he was attending school, nowadays, we aren t so forgiving ( How The Draft Has Changed Since Vietnam ). This could leave a lot of men with unquestionably promising futures stranded in the cemeteries. PTSD and suicide are two things that are very common among veterans in the U.S.. Lancelot Vs Theseus Research Paper Nowadays we hear tales of heroes from all different cultures from all around the world, but when looked at in detail, these stories aren t as distinctive as they may appear. Stories like that of Lancelot or Theseus have much more in common than one may think. The first way these heroes bear resemblance is in their chaotic families. They also had very similar childhoods, where they both showed their superb talents. And when they finally embarked on a quest, they both had similar outcomes. They even met and desert their love interests while on these quests. Even though these stories have unique origins from different cultures, they still remain very much the same. The quests that they embarked on were very similar and had similar outcomes. Both the heroes went on quests to save people from an oppressive monster. Lancelot saved the people of Corbenic from a dragon which was attacking their kingdom, and Theseus saved the people of Athens from the Minotaur who needed to be fed with Athenian sacrifices. To solve these problems, they each used their talents, swordsmanship and wrestling. Lancelot used his superior talents with his shield and sword. He was said to use his shield to dodge the flames of the dragon, from which the town s people ran from, and confidently sung blow with his sword till he defeated the dragon. On the contrary, Theseus won by using his impressive wrestling skills. He grabbed the Minotaur by its horns, and threw it to the ground, before he beat it to death with his fists. Moreover, they both were very successful in their endeavor. Lancelot defeated the dragon with seeming ease, and the people of Corbenic celebrated him because of it. Theseus also defeated the Minotaur with ease, and the Athenians celebrated him for it. The difference between the heroes is how they were celebrated. Lancelot had a feast was held in his honour. The feast lead to another line of story surrounding a highly sought after item presented to him, the Holy Grail. Theseus, alternatively, was celebrated by the fellow captives, and eventually ... • 5. What Are The Three Contemporary Theories Of American... If asked what democracy is, many would claim that it is a government by the people a phrase popularized by Abraham Lincoln in his Gettysburg Address. However, in today s society, there are three prominent theories pluralism, elitism, and hyperpluralism that attempt to explain who exactly has the power and influence in the United States of America. Each theory is centralized based on their own ideals and conclusions about who truly governs the nation. Our democracy has components of each of these political theories; each one has its own advantages and disadvantages. The three contemporary theories of American democracy: pluralism, elitism, and hyperpluralism provide more context for how policies and laws are actually created as opposed to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It takes into consideration the components of pluralism and elitism. Hyperpluralism is defined as the idea that competing interests groups have gotten too powerful making it impossible to accomplishing anything. This can result to muddled policy and policy gridlock due to the fact that some politicians will try to placate every group. Hyperpluralists assert that groups are the sovereign with the government their mere servant as powerful groups let their money and power do the talking. In this theory, average citizens are able to take part in policymaking by joining interest groups like in pluralism. However, it is taken to another level in this theory as interest groups that lose policymaking battles in Congress carry their agenda to the court. These groups and their members take advantage of the court system to get what they want and to bend policies to suit their own purposes. On the other hand, the Framers would not have expected for interest groups to gain that much power over the government, let alone use the judicial system for their own purposes. At that time, the Framers probably looked down on average citizens as they were illiterate, though I think that they would have been tolerant of groups whose members were wealthy and white. It would have been harder for interest groups to make use of the judicial system as well because judicial review is not specifically written in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was when she was still a child that her interest in writing emerged and she began writing stories influenced by children s mystery novels (Bobbie Ann Mason). These works would continue to influence her writing even in her later years. Bobbie Ann Mason is still alive today, and is approaching her older years of life, but she still publishes work, and travels around doing book reading and signings (Bobbie Ann Mason). In her criticism of Mason and comparison of these three stylistically different writers, she is quoted on an important aspect of the meaning of their, and especially Mason s, stories, Why do we read novels and short stories? For pleasure; for instruction; for the solace of seeing others in familiar dilemmas; for the opportunity to see what is unfamiliar, perhaps strange; for hope. These writers, in different ways, satisfy these requirements. (Becker). Not only does she raise incredible praise for these writers, she also gives us an opportunity to see how Mason s writing fits into the other writers of her time. She shows us what the purpose of the short story is in Mason s world, for hope (Becker). Mason in particular inspires this hope because although she is introducing her readers to the characters of rural Kentucky, change is something that, on some level, every reader can relate to and understand (Becker). This idea of understanding can even be compared and seen throughout the criticisms of character presentation by Michiko Kakutani, who has an appreciation for the way she lays out her characters to her audience, and the commentary by Robert Newman on how she relates to her readers through her characters. The way these two appreciate Bobbie Ann Mason s character development is the same way that Robin Becker appreciates how she presents the story itself to her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Natural Selection Dbq But natural selection is not random Another confusing argument you may hear from a pro evolutionist is the idea that evolution is in fact not random, and is not due to chance. They argue that evolution through natural selection is actually not chance at all. The reason being is that natural selection is in simple terms, survival of the fittest. It is logical. It is expected. If there is only enough food to sustain 20% of the population of a species, it is the strongest (or rather the most able at obtaining the food) 20% that will get the food and survive and reproduce. This is not down to chance; this is an expected and predictable outcome. Now, it does seem reasonable to accept this line of argument from pro evolutionists. Natural selection is not improbable because it happens gradually over a vast amount of time. It is not chance; it is inevitability. They argue that a supernatural intelligence cannot be responsible for this selection because it is too tiresome, cumbersome, and essentially would be a waste of their time, in fact making natural selection the only plausible solution. But, whilst this all seems logical and irrefutable, we must remember they are only talking about natural selection, and how nature favours and selects the fittest members of a species. They are only talking about the mechanism of how certain traits and characterises are favoured and selected. They are not talking about the random mutations that occur in order ... Knowledge will forever govern ignorance: And a people who mean to be their own Governors, must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives. A quote by James Madison, the author of the bills of rights, in a letter he wrote to W.T. Barry. Even James Madison was talking about ignorance in his day. However, that is not altogether surprising considering people were less informed and less educated in his era. Today citizens have arrived at a dangerous place of ignorance, and that political ignorance seems to be growing and flourishing. I will admit, I myself, have been found guilty of this very ... Based off the knowledge humans have already uncovered about black holes, they could change the future. Immense amounts of energy are released during formations, and it is at the center of a black hole, its singularity, that the laws of physics break down. As claimed by NASA, during each formation of a black hole, the black hole will reach an event horizon , where time appears to slow to an outside observer. See Figure 1 to view the parts of a black hole. Eventually during formation, time will stop, the star will not collapse anymore, and it will be frozen. To an outside observer, an object that reaches the event horizon and falls into a black hole would appear to never fully go in. This is because of the process called Spaghettification , which explains that if a human were to fall in, the force of gravity of their feet would be millions of times greater than the force on their head, so in a literal sense, they would stretch out and become flat before going in. It would literally appear to be an illusion because to the human falling in, time passes normally, yet slows for an outside observer. Time was discovered to slow near black holes when it was observed that light curves and bends when nearing a black hole. The only way to explain this bend is with Einstein s theory of general relativity and his concept of space time. Space time is the idea that space is actually a fabric that is warped by gravity. Einstein concluded that space and time cannot be effected without ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Kyoto Protocol recognized that developed countries are principally responsible for the current high levels of GHG emissions in the atmosphere as a result of more than 150 years of industrial activity. The Protocol placed a heavier burden on developed nations under the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities. China then made a deliberate choice to lag the world in energy efficiency since it has been so eager to just have more energy. Al Gore soon made himself a spokesman for the Kyoto Protocol and a middleman to help diffuse the tension between The United States and China. • 19. The Consequences Of Herding Behavior Of Financial Traders Abstract: This report sets out to analyze the causes and the consequences of herding behavior of financial traders, emphasizing the impact on financial markets efficiency and stability. Moreover, it contributes to formalize the role of policy makers, how they react to herding behavior and what measures they can take to curtail it. This paper is divided into three section: Section 1 introduces herding behavior; Section 2 analyzes origin and consequences of herding and its repercussion on Efficient Market Hypothesis theory; Section 3 focuses on the role of policy makers and what they can do to curtail herding. Therefore, as presented by West (1988), it is necessary to identify a behavioral model which can highlight the importance and the impact of psychological and irrational behaviors that can explain the latest financial crisis and asset bubbles. The greatest support of what can be defined as Behavioral Finance comes from Shiller (1984), who believes that financial behaviors are influenced by social movements. To explain return patterns that are anomalous from the classical viewpoint of EMH, it is necessary to introduce either market imperfections or failures of human rationality (Hirshleifer et.al, 2003). Herding is one of many psychological factors and biases that influences markets stability and can be identified as the cause of many stock markets bubbles and crashes. Moreover herding leads to unhedgeable systemic risk and causes markets failure to reflect all relevant information. Section 2 Herd behavior occurs when investors, firms or analysts take the same action and/or base their decisions according to others behaviors (Spyrou, 2013) and follow the crowd (i.e. switching from buying to selling and reverse). It is present in a market when individuals imitate better informed investors trading strategies rather than acting upon their own beliefs and private information. Moreover, herding must be distinguished from what is known as spurious herding . Spurious traders, when facing the same problems and set ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Cloud Services for Synergetic Web Based Project Management System Introduction: The paper deals with the current use of Project management in the software applications. Project management is the science (and art) of organizing the components of a project, whether the development of a new product or the launch of a new service. • 21. Similarities Between Funeral And Pericles Funeral We often like to think that over the course of two millennia we change a lot. In many ways we do, our technology advances, we become more knowledgeable, and we as people evolve. However, we do not evolve in every way that we perhaps should. An example we can look at to see the ways some things have not changed much through examining two similar documents. Written in drastically different time periods, you would not think Lincoln s Gettysburg Address and Pericles s Epitaph would really have much in common. The two funeral orations do share their fair share of similarities in addition to their differences, though. To understand how the two documents compare we must first look at the context of both the Epitaph and the Gettysburg Address. Pericles s Epitaph was written roughly 2,000 years ago during the beginning of the Peloponnesian Wars. It comes to us through Thucydides in his history The Peloponnesian War. Pericles spoke after the first year of battle in the winter, and his speech was delivered at a public funeral for all those that were slain during the war. This is why his speech is often called the Funeral Oration of Pericles. He had been a general at the time and a natural choice to deliver a speech on those who died in battle. In addition to his status though, Pericles had a reputation for speaking only when it was truly important. Thus, the people would know how important this speech was and more importantly they would get the message Pericles was trying to get ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 22. 12 Monkeys Anthropology 12 Monkeys is a 1995 film directed by Terry Gilliam in 1995. It is a science fiction film dealing with time travel. Time travel stories have been used in different films and other art media, but 12 Monkeys treats time travel in an unusual way. It is reasonable to say that 12 Monkeys does not have a very clear narrative like other classic Hollywood films do. And this messiness is mostly caused by how the film itself deals with time travel and how it presents it to viewers. 12 Monkeys creates an uncertainty of time travel. This sort of uncertainty does make the narrative less comprehensible, however, it is this uncertainty that attracts the audience. The story of 12 Monkeys itself is not very hard to understand. • 23. Essay Summary of Thoreau Synopsis Economy: This is the first chapter and also the longest by far. Thoreau begins by outlining his project: a two year and two month stay at a crude cabin in the woods near Walden Pond. He does this, he says, in order to illustrate the spiritual benefits of a simplified lifestyle. He easily supplies the four necessities of life (food, shelter, clothing, and fuel). He meticulously records his expenditures and earnings, demonstrating his understanding of economy, as he builds his house and buys and grows food. For a home and freedom, he spends a mere $25. Following is a description of the sounds audible from his cabin: the church bells ringing, carriages rattling and rumbling, cows lowing, whip poor wills singing, owls hooting, frogs croaking, and cockerels crowing. Solitude: Thoreau rhapsodizes about the beneficial effects of living solitary and close to nature. He loves to be alone, for I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude, and he is never lonely as long as he is close to nature. He believes there is no great value to be had by rubbing shoulders with the mass of humanity. Visitors: Thoreau writes about the visitors to his cabin. Among the 25 or 30 visitors is a young Canadian woodchopper, whom Thoreau idealizes as approaching the ideal man, and a runaway slave, whom Thoreau helps on his journey to freedom in Canada. The Bean Field: Thoreau relates his efforts to cultivate two and a half acres of beans. He plants in June and spends his summer mornings weeding the field with a hoe. He sells most of the crop, and his small profit of $8.71 covers his needs. The Village: Thoreau visits the small town of Concord every day or two to hear the news, which he finds as refreshing in its way as the rustle of the leaves. Nevertheless, he fondly but rather contemptuously compares Concord to a gopher colony. In late summer, he is arrested for refusing to pay ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 24. Smell And Odor And Emotion INTRODUCTION Often, one of the most overlooked of the five senses is the ability to smell. Living things use it every day from figuring out what the best scent is to eat the most delicious food to figuring out what perfume makes us the happiest (and potentially, the most attractive to others). However, smell is more than just the stench someone gives off. In fact, odor can trigger a variety of emotions. To begin the discussion on the relationship between odor and emotion, one must define what an odor is. More than just a sense, smell consists of molecules that recognized by olfactory receptors and must have a specific concentration (Yantis, 2014). With much research, a relationship between memory and odor has existed and has led to broader findings about odor and other components. According to a 2009 study, a relationship between odor and mood exists (Croy et al., 2011). However, research done regarding odor and emotion is a fairly recent interest and has gained more attention over the last few years. According to the American Psychological Association, an emotion is a complex pattern of changes, including physiological arousal, feelings, cognitive processes, and behavioral reactions, made in response to a situation perceived to be personally significant (APA, n.d.). BACKGROUND: MEMORY COMPONENT A key piece of the odor emotion relationship comes from the ability to remember odors over time. Introduction One of the central claims of Plato s Republic is that justice is not only desirable for its own sake, but that it maximises the happiness of those who practice it. This paper examines Plato s arguments in support of this thesis to determine (a) what he means by happiness, (b) to what extent it exists in his proposed ideal state, and (c) whether this in any way substantiates his claims about the benefits of justice. In particular, I will argue that there are two different conceptions of happiness at play in The Republic, and two methods of achieving its highest form, namely the pursuit of justice and philosophy, before arriving at a final definition of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, although this provides us with a way of categorising pleasure, it does not bring us any closer to a theory of happiness, as there is no suggestion that it too has three different forms. From this I conclude that Plato considers the notion of pleasure to be insufficient as an explanation of happiness, and that these instead represent two different, but interrelated, concepts. III. Happiness and Justice In order to fully appreciate what Plato means by eudaimonia, we must instead consider the ways in which it is supposedly achieved: namely, through the twin pursuits of justice and philosophy. The first argument for this thesis is found at the end of Book 1 (352d 354a) where Socrates states that everything has both a characteristic function and a virtue (or excellence) that enables it to perform its function well. He goes on to say that living is the function of the soul, and justice its characteristic excellence, from which it follows that the just man lives well and is therefore happy. This is a classic piece of Socratic wordplay that relies upon a disputed, question begging premise (justice being the virtue of the soul), two unsubstantiated assumptions (that the soul has both a function and an excellence) and equivocation ( to live well is the same as to be happy ), all of which renders it ... To elicit such a response requires the ability of a powerful writer that often in tandem achieves notoriety that transcends generations; for example, Sylvia Plath left a significant impression on the world, especially that of writing, despite her early passing at the age of thirty. It can be seen that the work of Sylvia Plath is often idolized due to the broad and relatable nature of the subject matter that is emotional strife; this work, then, is of great value to society and the world of literature as it teaches those reading that emotion is not something sparse, but wholehearted and running through the veins of every individual. Plath is most well known for her work that was heavily influenced by her ongoing mental illness, clinical depression. The vast majority of her poems, if not all, covered the subject of her emotional struggles she faced throughout her life. This can be seen within her novel The Bell Jar, which is her most admired and studied publication (as well as required in most curriculums across the United States). Notably, The Bell Jar was published less than a month before her suicide in the beginning of 1963. The raw nature of her writing is what drew a wide spectrum of people in, for all people have emotions, but she was one of the few that dared to publicize thoughts that ... This journey can t be completed without sorrow and suffering yet the marring of the soul from the journey can break a person s resolve, ultimately believing that the treasure they once sought was merely a fable. Due to being caught in the trap of despair and hopelessness, survivors mold a chitin from the pain endured in order to shield themselves from additional pain, often reluctant to peer their head out of their protective ward. Binary Opposition In Euripides Binary Opposition in the Works of Euripides Binary opposition, as defined by Corey Marvin simply describes a pair of theoretical opposites or thematic contrasts. Euripides uses binary opposition as an effective literary device in both the Medea and the Bacchae. One of the overarching dichotomies in both works is masculinity versus femininity. In the Medea, the protagonist flips the gender roles, and in the Bacchae, Dionysus androgynous nature allows him to often adopt a feminine persona in the play. • 32. The Argument Of Creation Vs. Evolution The argument of Creation vs. Evolution has been debated for quite sometime. Since Darwin s theory of Evolution by Natural Selection was published, some of those that thought the world and its inhabitants was made by a creator now began to think differently. Evolution began to make sense, there was evidence of certain types of species evolving (as in the finches in the galapogos islands as observed by Darwin) however, with creationism there was no evidence, it was all based on faith. Although Darwin s theory stands at the forefront for the belief in Evolution especially for those that tend to lean towards this side of the argument, there have been and still is many who support the argument of Design or what is referred to as the teleological argument. Philosophers such as St. Thomas Aquinas and William Paley wrote about the belief in there being a creator in their famous works. David Hume, William Derham and Richard Bentley to name a few also wrote about intelligent design. I believe in Creationism. The girls also discover a huge tree in the forest of their backyard. This huge tree hosts an even greater spirit, a monster called Totoro. Totoro has many secret powers and abilities, including the ability to fly, to stay hidden from anyone he wants to, and he can do ceremonial dances that cause seeds to grow.. Patrick Zukeran, perfectly explains God s stance on animism. In Isaiah 43:10, God transforms the animistic views of Israel into a biblical view. He teaches them that he is the only God and that all the other gods they believe in and worship aren t real. He also declares that any use of magic, witchcraft, and divination is unbiblical. Unlike the animistic worldview s belief that spirits are the cause for good or bad fortune, sickness, suffering, accidents and even natural phenomena, God shows and explains to the people in Israel that suffering is not the cause of some illegitimate spirit or god, but is His sovereign act of bringing people back to Him (Zukeran, ... COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS OF MEDICAL LABORATORY TESTS Introduction:Management in clinical diagnostic fields are frequently involved in cost analysis of new procedures due to the constantly changing science and technology. Also due to the health care organization especially the diagnostic division being tightly regulated by accreditation and regulatory bodies bringing a new procedure in house requires in depth analysis prior to an any decision being taken. Cost Object:In a clinical laboratory in a small community hospital we currently refer specimens for free PSA (prostatic specific antigen) to a large commercial laboratory. Pricing information for the consumables used is available from the utilization reports generated monthly by the finance department. When calculating reagents costs, the cost of the reagent actually used to run a single test is easy to calculate based on the known volume of reagent used and the cost per volume. These numbers are available from information generated by vendors. The cost of calibrators and controls is also available, but the actual cost of these per test can be determined by using the following formula:Cost of total amount usedTotal number of tests performed (using a particular calibration and/or control run time table). E.g. Three levels of control are run once per shift for 9 tests including free PSA and the instrument uses 0.2 ml. of control, the cost of 0.2 ml of control solution is $.91 each. • 41. Social Disadvantages Of STEM STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) is a rapidly growing educational and job field in this technologically advancing world. It is also starting to include more women, though not as many as one would consider equal . Although women make up 48% of the overall work force, they only fill 24% of STEM jobs (Beede et al. 1). Additionally, there is a lower amount of women than men graduating from colleges with degrees in STEM fields. Why is the man to woman ratio so drastically uneven in college STEM programs? Why do women have a higher rate of changing from a STEM major to something else? How can this be a problem for development in the field? How can this be remedied? For the sake of simplicity, all statistics apply to white men and women unless stated otherwise. It is common knowledge that the STEM field is overrun by men, with over 75% if STEM jobs being held by men in 2009 (Beede et al. 1). This fact in itself is something that repels women from delving into the field. Women start out with a social disadvantage when it comes to pursuing a STEM degree. There is often little to no support, especially from men, when they express interest in it. Even after attaining a degree and being hired, there may not be a sense of unity between the few women that are in the field. ... about three fourths of the women scientists surveyed reported that women in their work environments supported each other. And yet about a fifth of the scientists surveyed reported I feel ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. What Steroids Can Do To Your Body A bloodcurdling feeling spreads throughout the arena, a smell so menacing that even the men inside the ring don t know what will happen next. The roars of men are zipping through the air as bodies are torn limb from limb. Grotesque as this image may be only a few hundred years ago were people competing in stadiums adorned by thousands of viewers. Competition has always been a part of human nature, ever since the first man put his foot onto this planet the race has been on. Certainly competition has changed as years have gone by. First we competed for food on a daily basis, competition was needed in order to just make it through the day, as many years began to pass competition began to turn into daze in which people could watch others fight for their lives fighting against creatures from other parts of the world unknown to their own. Today, we no longer face the life or death bouts over a single meal. The sense of competition has not dulled, yet it has been moved from a daily survival to more of an extravagance for viewers to behold the abilities of others in awe. These days, the most anticipated competitions are held in football stadiums, boxing rings, and weight rooms. The rewards for today s gladiators consist of bragging rights over a rival, worldwide notoriety, and large sums of money. Being the best at what we do, getting the feeling that you are number one is what we as humans have always strived for. No matter what the cost had been we always took another step forward ... • 43. Kauai Life In The 1800s As the oldest island in Hawaii, Kauai has a wealth of history. Over the years, it has gone from ancient battlefields to a modern economy. First inhabited around 200 to 600 AD, the original settlers most likely reached Kauai from the Marquesas Islands nearly 2,000 miles away. Since these early immigrants arrived, an estimated 1,000 of the 1,300 species on Kauai have gone extinct. Centuries later, the Tahitians arrived and took over the island from the shorter Marquesans. The Arrival of James Cook Over the next few centuries, the Tahitians created a civilized society with a strong culture, religion and laws. Wailua was set up as a sacred birthing ground for the royal family due to its sacredness to the society. The early of the traditions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Christian missionaries began arriving in Kauai in the 1800s. In 1820, they set up the first mission house in Waimea. The old kapu system was removed as Christian laws took over. While the reading and writing taught by missionaries preserved Hawaiian culture for posterity, the daily culture of the natives was slowly destroyed. Kauai Experiences an Economic Boom As Westerners arrived, Kauai quickly became a leading sugar producer. In Koloa Town, a sugar mill helped to drive this economic boom. Quickly, other entrepreneurs followed suit to create sugar plantations. They brought in immigrants from across the world to boost the workforce. These new immigrants gave rise to the unique blend of cultures that exist within Kauai today. For a brief time period, sugar and pineapple production comprised a large part of the economy. As these industries fell, tourism became increasingly popular. Ultimately, Kauai lost its constitutional monarchy in 1893. A group of foreigners conspired to end the Kingdom of Hawaii because the constitution that was being amended was not in their best interests. Following a revolution, Hawaii became a United States territory in the 1900s. Later on, it joined the United States as a state in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Ethical Treatment of Animals ETHICAL TREATMENT OF ANIMALS If you systematically question the significance and use of existence you are a philosopher, either amateur or expert. Ethics is the division of philosophy that asks how nation supposed to live their lives and how they ought to act good and right to each one. Animal ethics is equal but contains animals. Robert Garner in his book Animal Ethics says Animal ethics look to examine values that are apprehended concerning the moral standing of non human animals. (Audi, 2010). Our correlation with animals is based on values we take in from our background and social way of life. We recognize these values, frequently on conviction from our seniors, without testing or studying them. But unexamined values when performed can do massive destruction everybody has a few contact with animals straight or not directly, either agricultural or shooting animals, eating them, providing food to their pets factory farmed animals, going to the zoo, by means of weathered substances on animals or washing with animal based soap. Hitherto the largest part of nation do not understand the pain and damage people inflict on animals since it goes mainly out of view and where it peaks on top of the surface it is endured as usual. Here is the point. The damage humans are doing to animal s amounts to a holocaust that we have to take in hand (Audi, 2010). • 45. Essay On Presidential Pardon Power The Presidential Pardon Power and its Limits The power to pardon is not the most discussed power of the President of the United States. However, there have been some controversial cases that sparked the debate about limiting this power. This paper deals with the origins of this constitutional clause, its limits and interpretations by the Supreme Court of the United States. I would like to mention some controversial cases and connected debate about limiting this power. Origins of the Presidential Pardon The roots of the pardon can be traced far back in the history. There are references to similar power in Mosaic Law, Greek Law and Roman Law. However, the U.S. constitutional clause originated in the English law. The law was applied in the colonies and the colonial governors held similarly broad pardon powers as the Kings. Except a simple pardon, they could also grant conditional pardon to any offender. The original plans for the Constitution did not contain a power of pardon. However, the main proponents of pardoning power Charles Pinckney, Alexander Hamilton, and John Rutledge managed to push through the inclusion of this clause. After a debate about this power during the Constitutional Convention, the presidential pardon clause was added into the Constitution as one of the enumerated powers of the President of the United States. It can be found in the Article II of the Constitution. It says: The President ... shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
