The spacing effect is test performance is better if studying is spaced out rather than massed together in
one study session (Bahrick 1979; Bjork 1979). The spacing effect is the most efficient if it is done in
two study sessions. The time in between study sessions is called the intersessional interval, which is
also known as ISI. The most successful duration of ISI is completely dependent on the retention
interval (RI). The optimal ISI lying at a value of 10 to 30% of the RI (Rohrer 2007). A successful test
performance depends on the timing of the ISI. Having an ISI be too short of too long it could have a
negative effect on the test performance. If spaced correctly, two study sessions has been proved to be a
more successful study strategy for long term learning than overlearning. Both the overlearning and the
spacing effect strategies have also been applied to mathematical learning. When tested, overlearning
showed no difference in the short term results compared to the long term results. Whereas the students
who used the spacing effect showed higher scores than those who used mass studying. Those who
used the spacing effect outscored the massers (74% vs. 49%) (Rohrer 2007). With this being said,
most mathematic textbooks utilize overlearning and massing even though research shows that these

As long as I can remember, my favorite subject has always been English. From a young age, I craved
an entertaining fantasy and begged my parents to tell stories. Eventually, my parents purchased a
cabinet full of books for my sister and I to enjoy. I was a bit hesitant to start reading, but once I
learned to read I could not cease. Reading was an adventure; I could discover the world and widen my
imagination. Consequently, my obsession with writing fiction began. I wrote what I knew as a child,
which was mostly realistic fiction consisting of complications between friends and families, always
with a positive denouement. While my stories may have been dull and repetitive, I wrote until my
hands were stained black with lead along with the notion that I would become a published author.
Upon entering school, my love for English was only strengthened by my distaste for Math. Instead of
thinking critically, it was more natural to think creatively. I found pleasure in the Accelerated Reader
program in elementary school and earned countless points as I expanded my reading level. One aspect
of English my elementary brain never understood was phonics rules. My large vocabulary and the

First things first: I love Batman. Far from making me biased towards Batman films, this actually
makes me more critical of film versions of The Dark Knight. I hated the previous installment of
Batman movies, in fact. They failed to capture the darkness of Batman, providing a cheesy caricature
instead. Thus, I had some reservations about Batman Begins from Christopher Nolan before I first
watched it. Nolan proved my concerns completely unfounded.
Batman Begins tells the origin story of Batman, as the title suggests. It shows how Bruce Wayne
(Christian Bale) saw his parents gunned down by a mugger, how he left Gotham afterwards to learn
about criminals, and how, in this version, he received training from Ra s Al Ghul (Ken Watanabe) and
returned to Gotham to combat crime. En route to becoming Batman, Bruce defied Ra s wishes by
