Descriptive Essay On The Turrbine Hall Bridge
The entrance doors are located with many considerations. Although every entrance has its own unique
function, but Using the river entrance to get into the building on level one was less spontaneous than
using the western entrance on level zero when I first visited the building. The sense of arrival was not
the same as the other entrances; I had to work harder to orientate. I very quickly found my self on the
Turbine Hall Bridge, a dead end space with not much purpose to it. When the new building opened,
the arrival experience on level one dramatically changed. Lots of improvement were shown and the
river entrance become more of a way finding route. It now has a comparable sense of arrival as that
accomplished at the western entrance.
Herzog de Meuron have achieved to create a street running across the Turbine Hall from the north to
the south on level one. This entrance very naturally pulled me onto the centre of the Turbine Hall
Bridge which felt like the heart of the building with activity visible on either side. I was able to read
the building from this central part. I got a sense of the building s shape and the layout which was
created in my mind as an imaginary architectural model.
This central space really does operate as the heart of the building; it was a great place to plan my first
move and start to explore Tate Modern in more detail. The Turbine Hall Bridge and its openings to the
landscape on either side, felt like an extension to the bankside s public realm.

Analysis Of Acquainted With The Night
In Company of the Moon and Inner Sorrow, Acquainted with the Night
In Robert Frost s poem, Acquainted with the Night , there is a sense of melancholic loneliness of
which the speaker seems to be content with. The reader sees a glimpse of his perpetual depression on a
habitual night time walk. He starts by saying he is one acquainted with the night (line 1). He feels a
sort of companionship with this time of day. Ironically enough, while most everyone else is asleep and
quiet, he feels a sense of belonging. The speaker personifies the city through parallels of his own
lonely depression. Having walked out in rain and back in rain shows that despite the weather, he is
persistent in his practice (line 2). The rain is symbolic of a gloomy mood or even a rough patch in one
s life. In this case, the rain is parallel to his actuality. As it rains for an extended period, we can infer
that the persona has suffered with depression for some time. Underlying causes of his sadness are not
clear. However, the reader gets the impression he lives a life alone. His sense of being is encompassed
in the imagery of the somber city streets. He is lonely, a continual moment of subtle dread haunts his
life. The repetition of the phrase, I have , at the beginning of the first four lines is significant as it
shows all he experiences on these walks. The walk seems to be a nightly ritual, perhaps a way to clear
his thoughts. Insomnia is often linked with feelings of emptiness in a depressed

The Gun Laws Of The United States Have A Long History On
The gun laws of the United States have a long history on determining the credentials on purchasing a
firearm. The 2nd Amendment is there for a reason for all citizens the right to bear arms. This leads
down to the individual States to regulate who can carry firearms and who cannot. From further
research, the regulations that the individual states have passed are blow backs to Gun Rights
Advocates who support the 2nd Amendment. What the 2nd Amendment does not speak on is those
who have been convicted of a crime and whether they still have the same rights and benefits of those
who have not. In this essay, several cases dealing with legally gun position, individual states

All 50 states allow a conceal carry on the same level but only a few are more restrictive than other. I
think this is the issue at hand and can be an issue if the federal government doesn t fix it. So, to answer
the question, who regulates gun control federal government or the individual states? The federal
government regulates the gun control but without being specific on the gun regulations, the individual
states can form gun laws that restrict a person from possess or carrying a firearm. It s not right but,
there is no clear definition in the Constitution that states that the individual states cannot make laws on
how to obtain a firearm or a carrying permit.
What is the 2nd Amendment about? Before that is stated, the 2nd Amendment states A well regulated
Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms,
shall not be infringed. This should be simple to understand but apparently, it is not. Let s go through
this Amendment to before get an understanding of it. To keep and bear arms is a right given to the
people to carry or even possess firearms and use them if needed. Just possessing a gun doesn t mean
that you must keep it locked away at home. Shall not be infringed is a right that shall not be taken
away once a law or statue is put out for the people. No restrictions or limitations shall be put on the
citizen for this right on owning a firearm or

Foreshadowing In Young Goodman Brown
Young Goodman Brown: Brief Analysis Young Goodman Brown is about a story of a young everyday
man and his journey through a darkened forest with a dark and foreboding stranger. The theme of the
story is about a test of faith, how one man figuratively abandons his Faith to seek a treacherous task
with the dark stranger. His young wife Faith, is an allegory to faith, and his lying to and leaving Faith
is a figurative demonstration of Young Goodman Brown literally abandoning his faith in God. There is
also a use of foreshadowing in the phrase There may be a devilish Indian behind every tree ... What if
the devil himself should be at my very elbow! (Hawthorn, 1835). This use of foreshadowing is very
important, because this also denotes a shift in the story. This leads me to believe that the events
following are just a dream, as it seems that this is a self fulfilling prophecy. The staff that the man
carries is repeatedly referred to, and compared to a snake, a serpent. The serpent is a biblically evil
creature; the talking snake in the Garden of Eden was the manipulator of Eve that caused the fall of
man. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

resist the Wicked One! (Hawthorn, 1835). He is suddenly in solitude, the branch that was once ablaze

what saved him from the harrowing dream, and what woke him from his slumber. However, he is not
completely saved as he had completely changed, he had turned into a darkly meditative, distrustful ...

The First Battle of Bull Run Essay examples
THE FIRST BATTLE OF BULL RUN
BY COLLINS MCKAY
On July 21, 1861, two armies, one confederate and the other Union, prepared for the first major land
battle of the Civil War. In 1861 Abraham Lincoln was sworn in as President.
The Southern states had seceded and the South had fired on and captured Fort Sumter on April 12
1861.
After the Fort Sumter battle, both the North and the South began preparing for war by raising armies.
This was done quickly and neither side spent much time training the troops. Both sides also did not
know what a long and terrible war was ahead.
The first Battle of Bull Run took place near Manassas Junction, Virginia, an important railroad

General McDonnell attempted to flank the Confederates by moving north and west, and began several
attacks on the Confederates right flank and the center of the Confederate line at Henry House.
As the battle wore on, the superior numbers of the Union Army began to wear down the Confederate
lines. At a critical point, as the Confederates began to fall back, an officer pointed out a line of rebels
who were still strong. He said, look at Jackson s men standing like a stone wall . He was talking about
General T. J. Jackson s men. Jackson would from then on be known as Stonewall Jackson , one of the
most famous of all Confederate generals. This seemed to inspire the Southern troops at Henry House
who held their ground and began to beat back the Union forces.
On the west flank the Union troops who had been moving slowly were pushed back by General
Johnston s troops who arrived in the afternoon by railroad. Civilian spectators had come out from
Washington to watch the battle. They thought it would be like a sporting event. As the battle turned
against the North, they panicked and the one road back to Washington became clogged with
overturned carriages and wagons. The Union retreat had turned into panic by early evening.
In the end, the North had suffered 2,896 men killed wounded or missing; the South had lost 1,982. The
South had won the big victory in the first major

Essay on The Human Body in Ancient Greek Sculptures
The Human Body in Ancient Greek Sculptures
The primary focus of ancient Greek sculptures was that of the human body. Almost all Greek
sculptures are of nude subjects. As the first society to focus on nude subjects, Greek sculptors
attempted to depict man in what they believed was the image of the gods and so would come to
celebrate the body by striving for verisimilitude or true likeness (realism and naturalism!). (Riffert)
Not only did the Greeks celebrate the human form in their art but also in everyday life. (Riffert) One
of the favorite topics for sculptors was that of the athlete. In Greek culture athletes were described as
hero athletes . (Riffert) This shows that athletes were revered and looked upon as heroes. The

Greeks were constantly in search of the Ideal (Riffert). Their Ideal was a body capable of enduring all
efforts, either of the racecourse or of bodily strength...this is why the athletes in the pentathlon are the
most beautiful. (Tufts) This description of the Ideal person given by Aristotle reflects the attitude of
the majority of ancient Greeks. People were not judged solely on their minds but rather strong
emphasis was given to the body. This emphasis given to the body was given to the nude body. It is
understandable that we question why nude art was so accepted by the Greeks, as they were the
pioneers in this field. The answer lies in the everyday life of the people. It was commonplace for
Greek men to exercise, go to war, and generally go about their daily business in the nude or scantly
clothed (Boardman 276).
While male nudity was straightforward and hiding nothing, female nudity was more reserved. In the
first fully nude female sculpture, Aphrodite of Knidos by Praxitales c. 350 340bc., the feminine
principle (is invented) which as a demure pose where the knees are brought together and sometimes
the hand is discreetly before the genitals (Riffert). This reference shows that in art as in life, women
are depicted as less than equal to their bold male counterparts. Usually female statues were either

Analysis Of Small Steps
Author Style To start off, Louis Sachar writes in many different styles in the different books he writes.
There are many different books that he has written and has gotten many awards. Sachar won the
Newbery Medal for one of his top selling books, called Holes. Another book that he is written is called
Small Steps. Small Steps is about how you have one thing at a time in life and not do so many things
at once. In the book Small Steps, Louis Sachar uses figurative language, conflict to help keep the
reader engaged, and uses the same character s name in multiple of his books as his writing style. One
style that Louis Sachar uses in the book Small Steps is conflict. Conflict is a struggle between
opposing forces or when two characters in a story get in a fist fight or just a fight over a conversation.
In the book Small Steps, an example of conflict is on page 217, She picked up her cup and tossed the
contents at him, splattering him with coffee and cream. Kira got mad at Armpit because Armpit said
that Kira should consider another profession besides singing and Kira was really upset that Armpit
said that. Kira tossed the cup of coffee at him while everyone in the store stared at Armpit with coffee
all over his shirt. This relates to the author s style because Sachar likes to use a lot conflict in his
books to keep the reader engaged. Another example of conflict in the book Small Steps is on page
199, Moses whacked him on the side of his head. X Ray gets hit on the side of his head very hard by
Moses, who is a man who wants the counterfeit tickets that X Ray has. X Ray s glasses broke, and his
tickets were stolen by Moses, while X Ray lay on the floor after he got punched in the face. Sachar
uses a lot of conflict in the books he writes. In addition to conflict, another style that Louis Sachar
uses in his books, especially Small Steps and Holes, is figurative language. Figurative language is a
language that uses words of expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation.
It also uses exaggerations or alterations to make a linguistic point. An example of figurative language

Rituals In John Wetering s The Empty Mirror
A ritual is a set of actions done in a specific order for a specific reason. Rituals are meant to signal the
importance of an observance because the ritual is unique, in that, it is only used for a special purpose.
One ritual that the author engages in is meditation which is an exercise aimed at detachment (Wetering
17). A specific meditation that is unique to each pupil is koan concentration. Meditation on the koan is
meant to discipline the monk and provide a concentration point for their meditation. Studying the koan
is also meant to lead monks to understanding that all things are connected. All beings are bound to
each other by strong invisible threads (Wetering 118). Another ritual in the book is the daily routine
that the monks undergo. The monks wake early, go to meditation, eat breakfast, see the master,
meditate in the afternoon, so on and so forth, each day repeating the same routine. This routine is also
mean to install discipline and enhance the monk s concentration because there is little variation so

or abilities and vanity is a quality of people who have too much pride in their own appearance
abilities, achievements and the quality of being vain. Vanity and pride are dangerous because it can
makes your life miserable and because it s like you re too self centered and you only think about
yourself. And pride doesn t go you anywhere good; it makes you look like a jerk. In the story, the

Essay about Menstrual Synchrony
Menstrual Synchrony
Generations of women have noticed it: you and your sister, or your roommate, or lover, or mom, get
your periods at the same time. It doesn t always happen, but it catches the attention when it does.
Female rats living in the same air space ovulate at the same time. Menstruation in monkeys
synchronizes with the full moon (7). So is it all in our heads, or is the same pattern present in humans?
The clearest argument against the existence of menstrual synchrony is that since the length of the
menstrual cycle varies from person to person (2), two women with different cycle lengths will never
synchronize. They may menstruate at the same time, but the next month they will be a little different,
the next month more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was later shown to be purely mechanical, though, with the swinging of the heaviest pendulum
merely rocking the shelf a little and throwing off the beat of other clocks (1).
The most likely theory is some kind of hormone change. Women s menstrual cycles respond to contact
with men, becoming shorter and more regular. So rather than a mechanical synchronization, like
pendulum clocks, the cause is more likely chemical. In 1971, Martha McClintock published a study
about the 135 women in her dorm at Wellesley College. She found that the synchronization of
menstruation between roommates and close friends did increase after the women began living
together. McClintock s explanation was pheromones. She co authored a followup experiment,
exposing women to chemical compounds from the armpits of other women. She concluded that this
did alter menstruation (4).
There are a number of problems dealing with the statistics of this and other experiments, though. The
data can be interpreted to either support or negate McClintock s conclusion, depending on how it is
analyzed (4).
Why synchronize? One possible benefit of simultaneous ovulation for the whole population is
simultaneous birthing. When female rats give birth at the same time, their pups are significantly
healthier and more likely to survive. Certain times of the year may be better for births, as when lambs
are born in spring rather than fall.

Automotive Ethics Of The Automotive Industry Essay
Automotive ethics is a subject that is often over looked. Not many people look at what is ethical in the
automotive industry, most people are generally happy if they can get a good deal on a car. However,
automotive ethics has an affect on how automobiles are made, what rules the government puts on
them, and their danger on the environment. Before the engine was invented, life revolved around a
much more complicated system of transportation. Much advancement in technology has been made to
make the common lifestyle today much easier, For example, cellular telephones and onboard
navigation systems (gps) in automobiles. Cellular telephones and navigation systems (gps) have
become an everyday item, but nobody looks at the dangers that can have while operating a motor
vehicle. Before the invention of the modern day engine, lifestyles were completely different. Letters
were sent by horse in wagons, people traveled by horses and other such animals, often taking an entire
day to go twenty miles. The first fuel engine was not invented until 1923. It only took one year before
this engine was put into automobiles, making the lives of the public much easier. The invention of the
engine not only made it possible to travel by road, but also by water and air. Mail, letters and more
were no longer delivered by horses and families were able to travel from one place to another in less
than a day. However, the affects of the modern day engine can be seen all over the world. For

The Ethics Of Scientific Knowledge
Cortni Volkman
7/30/2015
Science surrounds just about every aspect of human interaction but where does this scientific
knowledge come from? The communication of scientific knowledge trickles in a fashion opposite to
that of the filtration of water through a carbon scrubber, where the highest concentration of pure
scientific knowledge exists within the prestigious community of scientists and scientific knowledge
within the academic and public communities has to be filtered from the other particles of ideas,
leaving much room for interpretation. This paper will explore these different interactions among
various communities and how it shapes communication of scientific knowledge. One such community
is that of the very scientists who do the research and publications which supply much of the scientific
knowledge we know today. However, research and publishing is heavily time consuming and
expensive so many scientist must seek out funding. Bias, or a conflict of interest, can be argued to
exist in all aspects of science depending on when and how results are obtained. It is without discourse
than to argue that all research, even that done at collegiate level, has some amount of bias whether
from the funding received, the council from professors or advisors, or the availability of more
advanced technology to obtain data (Krimsky 2012). Such bias from technological means can even
limit what scientists can publish. Often the military relies on scientists for their expertise in

Deforestation And Its Effects On Deforestation Essay
Deforestation is the act of cutting or burning down all of the trees in an area. The original area covered
by forests was approximately six billion hectares, however the total area of land covered by forests
today is only four billion hectares. The issue is only expanding, and its challenges are becoming
tougher every day. In fact, approximately sixteen million hectares of forest disappear each year.
Forests cover more than twenty five percent of the world s land, and more than half of that is found in
the tropics. Deforestation has been around for more than five decades, and humanity has only just
begun to find the causes of the problem.
Forests cover approximately thirty percent of the world s land. Deforestation represents one of the
world s largest issues in global land usage. In fact, humans are one of the biggest influences for
deforestation. Farmers use a method known as the slash and burn process to cut down trees and grow
their crops in the soil fertilized by the ashes. Many people use commercial logging, a process in which
trees are trimmed and transported in order to build mills, by chopping down vast areas of forest for
profit. Wildfires and overgrazing are also large issues that contribute to deforestation. This leaves the
forest vulnerable to many global and environmental consequences. Everyday carbon dioxide is
returned to the atmosphere as a greenhouse gas when trees are burned, and this has great potential to
alter the global climate. As a result, there

Why I Want To Be An Em Pa Essay
When I take a step back and look at the endless opportunities I will have as a Physician Assistant (PA)
it truly amazes me. There are so many areas of clinical practice to choose from and at this point in my
education as a PA student I am still unsure of where I will end up. However, the area of practice that I
am currently most drawn to is emergency medicine (EM). What draws me to EM is that it is face
paced and team oriented. In addition, not only do you get to see a variety of patients, but you also see
a variety of diseases and injuries. This being the specialty that is of most interest to me, it is important
that I understand what exactly being an EM PA encompasses. In order to become an EM PA one must
graduate from an accredited PA program and obtain certification or be eligible to obtain certification
through the National Commission for PAs. The state licensure and regulations of PA practice must also
be abided by. There are also specific qualifications that must be acquired and/or maintained which
include EM training and EM specific CME, PA experience ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

choose a certain setting to practice in, you also have the opportunity to care for a large variety of
patients ranging from newborn to elderly. Unlike other PA specialties in which patients present with
similar diseases and injuries, EM opens the door for one to see and care for a large variety of illnesses

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) Essay
Introduction:
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is preventable disease that has a detrimental effects
on both the airway and lung parenchyma (Nazir Erbland, 2009). COPD categorises emphysema and
chronic bronchitis, both of which are characterised by a reduced maximum expiratory flow and slow
but forced emptying of the lungs (Jeffery 1998). The disease has the one of the highest number of
fatalities in the developed world due to the ever increasing amount of tobacco smokers and is
associated with significant morbidity and mortality (Marx, Hockberger Walls, 2014). Signs and
symptoms that indicate the presence of the disease include a productive cough, wheezing, dyspnoea
and predisposing risk factors (Edelman et al., 1992). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It has been found that 12% of moderate and 26% of heavy smokers will develop a form of COPD in
the later stages of life (Larsson, 2007). These statistic are shown to increase significantly as those who
smoke age with approximately 50% of smokers diagnosed with COPD by the age of 75 (Larsson,
2007). It has been found that 90% of chronic bronchitis patients have developed the disease because of
a long standing history of tobacco smoking (TXT). Other important factors include air pollution,
occupational hazards, advanced age, airway hyper responsiveness, diet, alcohol consumption and
heredity (Edelman et al., 1992). Although mortality rates for COPD have decreased due to the
progression of medical care, COPD currently has one of the highest mortality rates throughout the
developed world (Viegi et al., 2001). It currently ranks as the third highest burden of disease in
Australasia and the ninth highest worldwide (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2013). The
number of people with COPD is predicted to rapidly increase globally over the coming decades as the
tobacco epidemic continues (Viegi et al. 2001). COPD also places a large economic burden on the
world with the costs of treatment and care as well as the days of work lost (Viegi et al. 2001).

The Immense Changes That Aboriginal People Endured During...
Whether or not Aboriginal people had left the land to dry for itself is not our concern here. Nor is the
aim of this paper to prove the English were right in claiming sovereignty over Australian land, since
there is much proof they hadn t even been the first Europeans to meet with terra nullius . Nevertheless,
as history speaks for itself, there s clear evidence Aboriginal people endured immense changes during
colonization years, on the land where they stood, cultures unshaken, for thousands of years, before
Europe had a say in that. Indeed, what we aim for is to examine some ideas perpetrated along the
years in regards to the devastating effects that emerged once the first ship of colonizers arrived.
We ve had this debate about Australia was a terra nullius and it was a wasted landscape and people
hadn t used it and hadn t farmed it. They ve discovered that it probably supported 1.6 bilion lives and
that s how productive Aboriginal people were able to make this part of the Earth which has the most
irregular and unreliable rain fall and the driest continent on Earth. As historian Janet McCalman (First
Australians, Episode 1, 2008) presents her introduction, there s a smile flashing over her face. It s an
ironic smile almost as though she s to say if terra nullius was what you claimed for sovereignty, well
then, Aboriginal people have proved you wrong. And, indeed, if we consider the extend of time people
had inhabited this continent long before the interference of

A Fetal Organ That Is Vital For The Growth Of The Fetus...
Project Background (500 words) The placenta is a fetal organ that is vital for the growth of the fetus
during pregnancy. Abnormalities in placental development can result in pregnancy complications such
as intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and pre eclampsia (PE), which affect one in ten pregnancies
in New Zealand. IUGR occurs in 3 5% of all pregnancies, and is associated with an assortment of
increased risks of its own, such as hypoglycaemia, hypothermia, developmental delays and increased
risk of infection. Despite its prevalence, we currently have no effective treatment for IUGR other than
close monitoring and premature delivery of the baby. Worldwide, 10% of neonatal mortality can be
put down to prematurity, but the risks do not stop there respiratory problems, feeding difficulties, and
neurological problems also increase in incidence as gestational age at delivery decreases. Furthermore,
IUGR babies are at an increased risk of cardiovascular problems, obesity and type II diabetes in
adulthood, diseases which the health system is currently plagued with. Together, these issues place a
considerable burden on healthcare providers in both the short and long term to the cost of up to $300
000 NZD per child, along with an intangible cost to the families of the children. However, despite the
significance of this problem, our knowledge of the pathophysiology leading to IUGR is limited, and so

The Epidemic Of Aids And Aids
AIDS
AIDS, also known as (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is definitely one of the most deadliest
disease that has hit the Earth in all of human existence. With all the medicine that can help a person
with this disease they still haven t cured it. The ways that the AIDS cells can reproduce different kinds
of AIDS cells, and plus the ways that a person can get the disease. These reasons are why AIDS are so
far incurable for humanity.
AIDS is a medical condition that a person has when their immune system is too weak to fight off
infections. AIDS is a updated or worst form of HIV that aggressively attacks the immune system. A
person with AIDS can have 200 white cells or lower. The virus AIDS is known to attack and kill the
white blood cells so that they can t fight off the infections in your body. The AIDS cells make their
way inside of the cells in your body then start to reproduce and kill that cell. No cell that the AIDS
cells reproduce are the same. That is why there is no cure for the AIDS or HIV virus, also known as
(Human Immunodeficiency Virus). The only thing that the doctors can do is slow down the
reproduction process. AIDS was first found in Africa and Africa has an outstanding amount of AIDS
victims. Scientist believe that AIDS came from monkeys. Monkeys have cells of AIDS in their blood,
and since the people in Africa eat the monkeys the AIDS cells gets into their bloodstream and starts to
attack. Really no one knows the real reason that people have AIDS but

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Friction Pile
FOUNDATIONS Friction piles
What is a Friction pile?
In friction piles the load is resisted by friction between the surface of the pile and the surrounding soil.
A pure friction pile is usually quite long due to the fact that the load carrying capacity is a function of
the shaft being in contact with the soil.
When would a friction pile be used?
This kind of pile is used when there are no signs of hard rock materials present at a reasonable depth.
(A softer material for the pile to drive through)
Advantage
Where sands of medium to low density are found, friction piles can be used to increase the density and
therefore the strength.

many different elements must be taken into consideration even before beginning to shoot. The tone of
the piece, what sort of lighting will be used, the location of the shots, and a palette for the film, are all
elements that need to be considered before the actual filmmaking begins. However, even with rigorous
planning, questions will still arise during shooting, questions that might not even be apparent or

The camera cuts away in the middle of this action, leaving the bag theoretically floating somewhere in
mid space. The next scene, however, begins with Enid grabbing the bag off of a table where she sitting
with her best friend Rebecca. The result is the feeling one single motion: the bag leaving Seymour s
hands and entering Enid s. This idea of continuous motion reoccurs several times during the film
helping the viewer connect scenes as well as ideas. Across screen movement is another technique used
to smooth edit points in the film. Often a person or group of people walking across the screen will act
as a wipe, pushing the last scene off while introducing the next. Most of the time the wipe is an
insignificant character such as a jogger or a car driving by. Human wipes are also used within scenes
to lead camera movement. A great example of this is Enid s art opening scene. In this scene the camera
uses one continuous shot to move from the outside of the gallery to the room where Enid s piece is
hanging. However this movement is not done in a single motion. Through out this movement the
camera pauses three times, each time motivated to move again by a group of people walking in front
of the camera in the same direction. This makes the movement of the camera surprisingly subtle. nbsp;
Ghost World also uses editing as a means of establishing time and building relationships between
characters. Sequential

A Research Study On Mining Water
Here in the U.S mining uses 4,020 million gallons per day, out of that 4 million + gallons 86% of it
comes from surface and groundwater. To put this in percpective if you were a swimming pool builder
and a customer asked you to build a pool that would hold 3.5 million gallons you would need to build
a pool about 950 feet long (almost as long as 3 football fields), 175 feet wide, and 10 feet deep. That s
a lot of water!
Mining water is water used for the extraction of minerals that may be in the form of solids, such as
iron, coal, gravel and sand or liquids, such as crude petroleum and natural gas. Mining withdrawals
are considered self supplied water as freshwater or saline water. A recent study here in the U.S
revealed withdrawals from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nevada, Florida, Ohio, Arizona, and Pennsylvania accounted for 52 percent of fresh groundwater
withdrawals. Oil and gas operations in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Wyoming and California were
responsible for the large saline groundwater withdrawals in those states because saline water is a
byproduct of mining operations. The use of water in mining has the potential and has been known to
affect the quality of surrounding surface water and groundwater. In response to environmental
concerns and government regulations, the mining industry worldwide increasingly monitors water
discharged from mine sites and has implemented a number of management strategies to prevent water
pollution. One such strategy is the use of remote sensing to assess impact of mining activities on land
and water resources.
Environmental impact assessment is now an integral part of mining operations. Remote sensing data
enables the identification, delineating, and monitoring of pollution sources and affected areas
including changes in surface land use and to water bodies. Using high resolution satellite remote
sensing data and state of the art GIS techniques (geographical information system is a system designed
to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of spatial or geographical data)

  • 3. Descriptive Essay On The Turrbine Hall Bridge The entrance doors are located with many considerations. Although every entrance has its own unique function, but Using the river entrance to get into the building on level one was less spontaneous than using the western entrance on level zero when I first visited the building. The sense of arrival was not the same as the other entrances; I had to work harder to orientate. I very quickly found my self on the Turbine Hall Bridge, a dead end space with not much purpose to it. When the new building opened, the arrival experience on level one dramatically changed. Lots of improvement were shown and the river entrance become more of a way finding route. It now has a comparable sense of arrival as that accomplished at the western entrance. Herzog de Meuron have achieved to create a street running across the Turbine Hall from the north to the south on level one. This entrance very naturally pulled me onto the centre of the Turbine Hall Bridge which felt like the heart of the building with activity visible on either side. I was able to read the building from this central part. I got a sense of the building s shape and the layout which was created in my mind as an imaginary architectural model. This central space really does operate as the heart of the building; it was a great place to plan my first move and start to explore Tate Modern in more detail. The Turbine Hall Bridge and its openings to the landscape on either side, felt like an extension to the bankside s public realm. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Analysis Of Acquainted With The Night In Company of the Moon and Inner Sorrow, Acquainted with the Night In Robert Frost s poem, Acquainted with the Night , there is a sense of melancholic loneliness of which the speaker seems to be content with. The reader sees a glimpse of his perpetual depression on a habitual night time walk. He starts by saying he is one acquainted with the night (line 1). He feels a sort of companionship with this time of day. Ironically enough, while most everyone else is asleep and quiet, he feels a sense of belonging. The speaker personifies the city through parallels of his own lonely depression. Having walked out in rain and back in rain shows that despite the weather, he is persistent in his practice (line 2). The rain is symbolic of a gloomy mood or even a rough patch in one s life. In this case, the rain is parallel to his actuality. As it rains for an extended period, we can infer that the persona has suffered with depression for some time. Underlying causes of his sadness are not clear. However, the reader gets the impression he lives a life alone. His sense of being is encompassed in the imagery of the somber city streets. He is lonely, a continual moment of subtle dread haunts his life. The repetition of the phrase, I have , at the beginning of the first four lines is significant as it shows all he experiences on these walks. The walk seems to be a nightly ritual, perhaps a way to clear his thoughts. Insomnia is often linked with feelings of emptiness in a depressed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. The Gun Laws Of The United States Have A Long History On The gun laws of the United States have a long history on determining the credentials on purchasing a firearm. The 2nd Amendment is there for a reason for all citizens the right to bear arms. This leads down to the individual States to regulate who can carry firearms and who cannot. From further research, the regulations that the individual states have passed are blow backs to Gun Rights Advocates who support the 2nd Amendment. What the 2nd Amendment does not speak on is those who have been convicted of a crime and whether they still have the same rights and benefits of those who have not. All 50 states allow a conceal carry on the same level but only a few are more restrictive than other. I think this is the issue at hand and can be an issue if the federal government doesn t fix it. So, to answer the question, who regulates gun control federal government or the individual states? The federal government regulates the gun control but without being specific on the gun regulations, the individual states can form gun laws that restrict a person from possess or carrying a firearm. It s not right but, there is no clear definition in the Constitution that states that the individual states cannot make laws on how to obtain a firearm or a carrying permit. What is the 2nd Amendment about? Before that is stated, the 2nd Amendment states A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. This should be simple to understand but apparently, it is not. Let s go through this Amendment to before get an understanding of it. To keep and bear arms is a right given to the people to carry or even possess firearms and use them if needed. Just possessing a gun doesn t mean that you must keep it locked away at home. Shall not be infringed is a right that shall not be taken away once a law or statue is put out for the people. • 7. Foreshadowing In Young Goodman Brown Young Goodman Brown: Brief Analysis Young Goodman Brown is about a story of a young everyday man and his journey through a darkened forest with a dark and foreboding stranger. The theme of the story is about a test of faith, how one man figuratively abandons his Faith to seek a treacherous task with the dark stranger. His young wife Faith, is an allegory to faith, and his lying to and leaving Faith is a figurative demonstration of Young Goodman Brown literally abandoning his faith in God. There is also a use of foreshadowing in the phrase There may be a devilish Indian behind every tree ... What if the devil himself should be at my very elbow! (Hawthorn, 1835). This use of foreshadowing is very important, because this also denotes a shift in the story. This leads me to believe that the events following are just a dream, as it seems that this is a self fulfilling prophecy. The staff that the man carries is repeatedly referred to, and compared to a snake, a serpent. The serpent is a biblically evil creature; the talking snake in the Garden of Eden was the manipulator of Eve that caused the fall of man. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This further solidifies that this is a test faith, that only his faith was what saved him from the harrowing dream, and what woke him from his slumber. Reading is an amazing communication channel that human being has invented. For me, Reading anything is combination of two things, your eyes and continues thing of your brain. Reading is everywhere in our routine life beginning from early morning newspaper to late night texting. Talking about my life, role of reading was different in my every part of life. • 9. The First Battle of Bull Run Essay examples THE FIRST BATTLE OF BULL RUN BY COLLINS MCKAY On July 21, 1861, two armies, one confederate and the other Union, prepared for the first major land battle of the Civil War. In 1861 Abraham Lincoln was sworn in as President. The Southern states had seceded and the South had fired on and captured Fort Sumter on April 12 1861. After the Fort Sumter battle, both the North and the South began preparing for war by raising armies. This was done quickly and neither side spent much time training the troops. Both sides also did not know what a long and terrible war was ahead. The first Battle of Bull Run took place near Manassas Junction, Virginia, an important railroad junction twenty five miles west of Washington, D.C. Bull Run ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... General McDonnell attempted to flank the Confederates by moving north and west, and began several attacks on the Confederates right flank and the center of the Confederate line at Henry House. As the battle wore on, the superior numbers of the Union Army began to wear down the Confederate lines. At a critical point, as the Confederates began to fall back, an officer pointed out a line of rebels who were still strong. He said, look at Jackson s men standing like a stone wall . He was talking about General T. J. Jackson s men. Jackson would from then on be known as Stonewall Jackson , one of the most famous of all Confederate generals. This seemed to inspire the Southern troops at Henry House who held their ground and began to beat back the Union forces. On the west flank the Union troops who had been moving slowly were pushed back by General Johnston s troops who arrived in the afternoon by railroad. Civilian spectators had come out from Washington to watch the battle. They thought it would be like a sporting event. • 12. Essay on The Human Body in Ancient Greek Sculptures The Human Body in Ancient Greek Sculptures The primary focus of ancient Greek sculptures was that of the human body. Almost all Greek sculptures are of nude subjects. As the first society to focus on nude subjects, Greek sculptors attempted to depict man in what they believed was the image of the gods and so would come to celebrate the body by striving for verisimilitude or true likeness (realism and naturalism!). (Riffert) Not only did the Greeks celebrate the human form in their art but also in everyday life. (Riffert) One of the favorite topics for sculptors was that of the athlete. (Tufts) This description of the Ideal person given by Aristotle reflects the attitude of the majority of ancient Greeks. People were not judged solely on their minds but rather strong emphasis was given to the body. This emphasis given to the body was given to the nude body. It is understandable that we question why nude art was so accepted by the Greeks, as they were the pioneers in this field. The answer lies in the everyday life of the people. It was commonplace for Greek men to exercise, go to war, and generally go about their daily business in the nude or scantly clothed (Boardman 276). While male nudity was straightforward and hiding nothing, female nudity was more reserved. In the first fully nude female sculpture, Aphrodite of Knidos by Praxitales c. 350 340bc., the feminine principle (is invented) which as a demure pose where the knees are brought together and sometimes the hand is discreetly before the genitals (Riffert). • 17. Analysis Of Small Steps Author Style To start off, Louis Sachar writes in many different styles in the different books he writes. There are many different books that he has written and has gotten many awards. Sachar won the Newbery Medal for one of his top selling books, called Holes. Another book that he is written is called Small Steps. Small Steps is about how you have one thing at a time in life and not do so many things at once. In the book Small Steps, Louis Sachar uses figurative language, conflict to help keep the reader engaged, and uses the same character s name in multiple of his books as his writing style. One style that Louis Sachar uses in the book Small Steps is conflict. Conflict is a struggle between opposing forces or when two characters in a story get in a fist fight or just a fight over a conversation. In the book Small Steps, an example of conflict is on page 217, She picked up her cup and tossed the contents at him, splattering him with coffee and cream. Kira got mad at Armpit because Armpit said that Kira should consider another profession besides singing and Kira was really upset that Armpit said that. Kira tossed the cup of coffee at him while everyone in the store stared at Armpit with coffee all over his shirt. This relates to the author s style because Sachar likes to use a lot conflict in his books to keep the reader engaged. Another example of conflict in the book Small Steps is on page 199, Moses whacked him on the side of his head. X Ray gets hit on the side of his head very hard by Moses, who is a man who wants the counterfeit tickets that X Ray has. X Ray s glasses broke, and his tickets were stolen by Moses, while X Ray lay on the floor after he got punched in the face. Sachar uses a lot of conflict in the books he writes. In addition to conflict, another style that Louis Sachar uses in his books, especially Small Steps and Holes, is figurative language. It also uses exaggerations or alterations to make a linguistic point. An example of figurative language in Small Steps ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One ritual that the author engages in is meditation which is an exercise aimed at detachment (Wetering 17). A specific meditation that is unique to each pupil is koan concentration. Meditation on the koan is meant to discipline the monk and provide a concentration point for their meditation. Studying the koan is also meant to lead monks to understanding that all things are connected. All beings are bound to each other by strong invisible threads (Wetering 118). Another ritual in the book is the daily routine that the monks undergo. It doesn t always happen, but it catches the attention when it does. Female rats living in the same air space ovulate at the same time. Menstruation in monkeys synchronizes with the full moon (7). So is it all in our heads, or is the same pattern present in humans? The clearest argument against the existence of menstrual synchrony is that since the length of the menstrual cycle varies from person to person (2), two women with different cycle lengths will never synchronize. This was later shown to be purely mechanical, though, with the swinging of the heaviest pendulum merely rocking the shelf a little and throwing off the beat of other clocks (1). The most likely theory is some kind of hormone change. Women s menstrual cycles respond to contact with men, becoming shorter and more regular. So rather than a mechanical synchronization, like pendulum clocks, the cause is more likely chemical. In 1971, Martha McClintock published a study about the 135 women in her dorm at Wellesley College. She found that the synchronization of menstruation between roommates and close friends did increase after the women began living together. McClintock s explanation was pheromones. She co authored a followup experiment, exposing women to chemical compounds from the armpits of other women. She concluded that this did alter menstruation (4). There are a number of problems dealing with the statistics of this and other experiments, though. The data can be interpreted to either support or negate McClintock s conclusion, depending on how it is analyzed (4). Why synchronize? One possible benefit of simultaneous ovulation for the whole population is simultaneous birthing. When female rats give birth at the same time, their pups are significantly healthier and more likely to survive. Certain times of the year may be better for births, as when lambs are born in spring rather than fall. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The communication of scientific knowledge trickles in a fashion opposite to that of the filtration of water through a carbon scrubber, where the highest concentration of pure scientific knowledge exists within the prestigious community of scientists and scientific knowledge within the academic and public communities has to be filtered from the other particles of ideas, leaving much room for interpretation. This paper will explore these different interactions among various communities and how it shapes communication of scientific knowledge. One such community is that of the very scientists who do the research and publications which supply much of the scientific knowledge we know today. Deforestation has been around for more than five decades, and humanity has only just begun to find the causes of the problem. Forests cover approximately thirty percent of the world s land. Deforestation represents one of the world s largest issues in global land usage. In fact, humans are one of the biggest influences for deforestation. Farmers use a method known as the slash and burn process to cut down trees and grow their crops in the soil fertilized by the ashes. Many people use commercial logging, a process in which trees are trimmed and transported in order to build mills, by chopping down vast areas of forest for profit. Wildfires and overgrazing are also large issues that contribute to deforestation. This leaves the forest vulnerable to many global and environmental consequences. Abnormalities in placental development can result in pregnancy complications such as intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and pre eclampsia (PE), which affect one in ten pregnancies in New Zealand. IUGR occurs in 3 5% of all pregnancies, and is associated with an assortment of increased risks of its own, such as hypoglycaemia, hypothermia, developmental delays and increased risk of infection. Despite its prevalence, we currently have no effective treatment for IUGR other than close monitoring and premature delivery of the baby. Worldwide, 10% of neonatal mortality can be put down to prematurity, but the risks do not stop there respiratory problems, feeding difficulties, and neurological problems also increase in incidence as gestational age at delivery decreases. Furthermore, IUGR babies are at an increased risk of cardiovascular problems, obesity and type II diabetes in adulthood, diseases which the health system is currently plagued with. However, despite the significance of this problem, our knowledge of the pathophysiology leading to IUGR is limited, and so developing effective treatments for IUGR has been exceptionally ... That is why there is no cure for the AIDS or HIV virus, also known as (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). The only thing that the doctors can do is slow down the reproduction process. AIDS was first found in Africa and Africa has an outstanding amount of AIDS victims. Scientist believe that AIDS came from monkeys. • 31. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Friction Pile FOUNDATIONS Friction piles What is a Friction pile? In friction piles the load is resisted by friction between the surface of the pile and the surrounding soil. A pure friction pile is usually quite long due to the fact that the load carrying capacity is a function of the shaft being in contact with the soil. When would a friction pile be used? This kind of pile is used when there are no signs of hard rock materials present at a reasonable depth. (A softer material for the pile to drive through) Advantage Where sands of medium to low density are found, friction piles can be used to increase the density and therefore the strength. Disadvantage If there are layers of rock or any rocklike material present then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Editing critique of Tery Zwigoff s Ghostworld Essay Editing Critique of Terry Zwigoff s Ghost World nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; In order for a film to be successful many different elements must be taken into consideration even before beginning to shoot. The tone of the piece, what sort of lighting will be used, the location of the shots, and a palette for the film, are all elements that need to be considered before the actual filmmaking begins. However, even with rigorous planning, questions will still arise during shooting, questions that might not even be apparent or answered until the footage reaches the editing room. However, many shortcomings in shooting can be solved through editing. In fact, with good editing pretty much any type of footage can be made into a working piece of art. But good ... The next scene, however, begins with Enid grabbing the bag off of a table where she sitting with her best friend Rebecca. The result is the feeling one single motion: the bag leaving Seymour s hands and entering Enid s. This idea of continuous motion reoccurs several times during the film helping the viewer connect scenes as well as ideas. Across screen movement is another technique used to smooth edit points in the film. Often a person or group of people walking across the screen will act as a wipe, pushing the last scene off while introducing the next. Most of the time the wipe is an insignificant character such as a jogger or a car driving by. Human wipes are also used within scenes to lead camera movement. A great example of this is Enid s art opening scene. In this scene the camera uses one continuous shot to move from the outside of the gallery to the room where Enid s piece is hanging. However this movement is not done in a single motion. Through out this movement the camera pauses three times, each time motivated to move again by a group of people walking in front of the camera in the same direction. This makes the movement of the camera surprisingly subtle. nbsp; Ghost World also uses editing as a means of establishing time and building relationships between characters. Sequential ... • 34. A Research Study On Mining Water Here in the U.S mining uses 4,020 million gallons per day, out of that 4 million + gallons 86% of it comes from surface and groundwater. To put this in percpective if you were a swimming pool builder and a customer asked you to build a pool that would hold 3.5 million gallons you would need to build a pool about 950 feet long (almost as long as 3 football fields), 175 feet wide, and 10 feet deep. That s a lot of water! Mining water is water used for the extraction of minerals that may be in the form of solids, such as iron, coal, gravel and sand or liquids, such as crude petroleum and natural gas. Mining withdrawals are considered self supplied water as freshwater or saline water. A recent study here in the U.S revealed withdrawals from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nevada, Florida, Ohio, Arizona, and Pennsylvania accounted for 52 percent of fresh groundwater withdrawals. Oil and gas operations in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Wyoming and California were responsible for the large saline groundwater withdrawals in those states because saline water is a byproduct of mining operations. The use of water in mining has the potential and has been known to affect the quality of surrounding surface water and groundwater. In response to environmental concerns and government regulations, the mining industry worldwide increasingly monitors water discharged from mine sites and has implemented a number of management strategies to prevent water pollution. One such strategy is the use of remote sensing to assess impact of mining activities on land and water resources. Environmental impact assessment is now an integral part of mining operations. Remote sensing data enables the identification, delineating, and monitoring of pollution sources and affected areas including changes in surface land use and to water bodies. Using high resolution satellite remote sensing data and state of the art GIS techniques (geographical information system is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of spatial or geographical data) data can be used for long term environmental management and monitoring of reclamation and ...
