At any given time, with all the knowledge we have, new knowledge can emerge. We call this the adjacent possible. It explains why new inventions are invented when they are, and why they are not possible before. Adjacent possible is a very useful term to understand the progress of technology. Technology evolves by using prevailing technologies to improve upon. Thus technology is combinatorial and built in layers. With each layer new ideas can be built upon the previous layers. Thus Gall´s Law says that any complex system that works is built of simpler systems that work.
We will look at the adjacent possible and some ideas that came when all the enabling technologies are available. We also look at an idea that was not possible to build at the time, Charles Babbage engines.

New and emerging technology is having impact on people, businesses, and society. In some cases the current business models are replaced by new once in a relative short time. The Internet with smartphones and all-ways on access to cloud based services is creating new business models, and for established companies or individual creators it is hard to adapt.
This is my lecture at the WLA/EL Internet and New Media held in Reykjavik 22-24 September. In this I look at some of the concepts I teach about in my New Technology course. Fortunately, there are theories and principles that can help us understand how disruption happens.

• THE PRIMARY REASON FOR MICROSOFT’S SUCCESS WAS THAT IT WAS WILLING
AND EAGER TO LICENSE ITS OPERATING SYSTEM TO ANY HARDWARE MAKER.
APPLE, BY CONTRAST, OPTED FOR AN INTEGRATED APPROACH. ITS HARDWARE
CAME ONLY WITH ITS SOFTWARE AND VICE VERSA. JOBS WAS AN ARTIST, A
PERFECTIONIST, AND THUS A CONTROL FREAK WHO WANTED TO BE IN CHARGE
OF THE USER EXPERIENCE FROM BEGINNING TO END. APPLE’S APPROACH LED TO
MORE BEAUTIFUL PRODUCTS, A HIGHER PROFIT MARGIN, AND A MORE SUBLIME
USER EXPERIENCE. MICROSOFT’S APPROACH LED TO A WIDER CHOICE OF
HARDWARE. IT ALSO TURNED OUT TO BE A BETTER PATH FOR GAINING MARKET
SHARE.

• CONCEPTION OF THE WEB (WORLD WIDE WEB-WWW) WAS DRIVEN PRIMARILY BY ONE
PERSON- BERNERS LEE
• ONCE THE PROJECT WAS OFFICIALLY EMBRACED, THE CERN ADMINISTRATORS WANTED
TO PATENT IT. WHEN THEY RAISED THE ISSUE, BERNERS-LEE OBJECTED. HE WANTED THE
WEB TO SPREAD AND EVOLVE AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE, AND THAT MEANT IT SHOULD BE
FREE AND OPEN. AT ONE POINT OF TIME, THEY ASKED HIM ACCUSINGLY, “DO YOU WANT
TO BE RICH?” BERNERES’ REACTION WAS “WELL, IT HELPS, NO.”
