2. Basic Terminology
• Internet of Things (IoT)
• IoT is a technology, which tries to build up an inter-network of different things, different
physical objects that we use and see around us.
• IoT Categories
• Industrial IoT and
• Consumer IoT
• Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)
• Applications of IoT in the industries
• M 2 M
• Communication between machines or devices with communication and computing facilities
• Free from human intervention
• Similar to SCADA ( Industrial supervisory control and data acquisition system)
• Cyber Physical System
• Comprises of two words - Cyber world and Physical world
• these are systems where there is a strong component of the cyber world and the physical world
3. Basic IoT Components
• Sensor Node
• A sensor is a device, module, machine, or subsystem whose purpose is to detect events or
changes in its environment and send the information to a computer like device.
• Actuator Node
• An actuator is a component of a machine that is responsible for moving and controlling a
mechanism
• An actuator requires a control signal and a source of energy
• an actuator responds by converting the source's energy into mechanical motion
• Sensors and actuators can be classified as transducers
• The sensor plus the processor, which will process the input coming from these sensors, is a
transducer.
• Similarly, actuator plus processor is also a transducer.
• Networking – May be standalone IoT Node or May be IoT LAN or IOT WAN
• Server Processing
• Data Analysis
