2. IEEE 802.15.4
• EEE 802.15.4 standard defines the specifications of the Physical Layer and Medium Access Control
(MAC) sub layer for low data rate wireless connectivity with very limited battery consumption
requirements typically operating in the personal operating space (POS).
• It is known as LR-PAN (Low data Rate Personal Area Network)
• But, It does not provide any network layer standard or application layer

4. IEEE 802.15.4 General Characteristics
• Over-the-air data rates of 250 kb/s, 40 kb/s and 20 kb/s.
• Star or peer to peer operation.
• Allocated 16 bit short or 64 bits extended addresses.
• Allocation of guaranteed time slots (GTSs).
• Carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA-CA) channel access.
• Fully acknowledgement protocol for transfer reliability.
• Low power consumption.
• Energy detection (ED).
• Link quality indication (LQI).
• 16 channels at 2450 MHz, 10 channels at 915 MHz and 1 channel at 868 MHz band.
5. • What it is :
• An industry consortium of more than 50
companies. With a goal of promoting IEEE
802.15.4 WPAN
• Defines Higher layers (Network, Application
Profiles)
• Performs Marketing and Compliance
certification.
• Targeted towards Automation and Remote
control applications
• What it is not:
• An Open standards-defining organization
• Officially associated with IEEE
• Associated with Bluetooth
• Specifying the PHY or MAC layer

6. ZigBee
• IEEE 802.15.4 is very much associated with the ZigBee.
• ZigBee Alliance working in conjuction with IEEE Task group 4 (TG4) to specify full protocol stack
for low cost, low power, low data rate wireless communication.
• It specifies the protocol layers above IEEE 802.15.4 as shown in figure illustrated above .
• ZigBee is Wireless Technology that builds upon IEEE 802.15.4 standard and defines higher layer
(network layer and above) specification of network protocol stack.
• ZigBee is categorized as a low rate WPAN and its closest technology is Bluetooth.
• Whether ZigBee and Bluetooth are complementary or competing ?
• Bluetooth must rely on fairly frequent battery recharging, while the whole goal of ZigBee is for a user
to be able to put batteries in the devices and forget about them for months to years.
