2. flip book
• A flip book, flicker book, or kineograph is a booklet with a
series of images that very gradually change from one page to
the next, so that when the pages are viewed in quick
succession, the images appear to animate by simulating
motion or some other change. Often, flip books are illustrated
books for children, but may also be geared toward adults and
employ a series of photographs rather than drawings. Flip
books are not always separate books, but may appear as an
added feature in ordinary books or magazines, frequently
using the page corners. Software packages and websites are
also available that convert digital video files into custom-made
flip books.

4. 2D traditional cell (“Disney”)
• Traditional animation, also known as cel animation, or hand-
drawn animation, is an animation technique where each
frame of the film is drawn by hand, and was - until the arrival
of computer animation - the dominant form used in cinema.
• Although advances in technology have resulted in much of the
labour of hand-drawn animation being reduced, the technique
remains a long and painstaking one.

7. 2D computer
• 2D animation is the art of creating movement in a two-
dimensional space. This includes characters, creatures, FX, and
backgrounds.
• The illusion of movement is created when individual drawings
are sequenced together over time. One second of time is
usually divided into 24 frames. Depending on the style of
animation there can be as many as 24 unique drawings in one
second of animation (24fps) or as little as two. Conventionally
animation is done on "2s" meaning there is a drawing every 2
frames (12fps). This allows artists to save on production
time/costs and gives 2D animation its unique look.

• 2D is a popular and diverse medium that's making a massive
comeback. It can be seen prevalently in TV shows, video
games, feature films, advertisements, mobile apps and on
websites. Popular modern examples of 2D include TV shows
Rick and Morty and F is for Family. Social media platforms like
Snapchat are launching 2D animated series with snappy 1-3
minute episodes. And there's even been a recent surge in 2D
platform video games such as Cuphead.

• “Animation is used for everything online (advertising,
entertainment), even if you don't realize it initially,” says Scott
Claus, 2D Animation Mentor at CG Spectrum. “The medium is
evolving quickly. Television animation has taken off, and
streaming services are constantly looking for new content.”

• 3D animation is when computer generated objects appear to
move through three dimensional space. In 3D animation,
objects can be moved and rotated following the same
principles as in real life. Computer animation makes use of 3D
computer graphics to create a two dimensional moving
picture that depicts three dimensions. 3D animation is used in
industries as diverse as gaming and medicine, and they are
commonly used for presentations and marketing across all
industries. To understand 3D animation, let’s take a closer look
at what it is, where it comes from and what it is used for.

• Objects are created with 3D models and then manipulated
within 3D software. These manipulations allow for picture
sequences to be exported that make it appear as though
movement is occurring in a 3D digital environment.

15. Stop action/motion
• Stop motion is an animation technique in which a camera is
repeatedly stopped and started, frame-by-frame, in order to
give inanimate objects and figures the impression of
movement.

16. Types of Stop Motion
• While stop motion is a distinct animation style, there are
different ways to utilize it as part of your marketing strategy.
The sub-categories of stop motion including cutouts, clay
(claymation) and puppets, and live-action – all of which could
be utilized in an eye-catching marketing or corporate video to
set your messaging apart.

17. Cutouts
• Typically, cutout animation is made with flat, two-dimensional
figures that have joints, giving them an effect of fixed motion.
The first known stop motion feature was a cutout style done
in 1917 called El Apóstol (which is now considered a lost film).

• I’m lumping these two together because, at the end of the
day, they’re essentially the same thing. Some sort of pliable
material is sculpted around a wireframe (an armature) and is
adjusted ever so slightly for each shot to achieve the illusion
of sequential movement.

• While claymation and puppets are real-life objects, stop
motion can also utilize real-life people to mimic a live-action
video, but with a twist.

• Now, we aren’t going to sit here and try to sell stop motion as
an easy option for producing a unique video. It is challenging
and requires intense dedication to the craft.

21. How to Get Started With Stop
Motion Animation
• Stop motion may seem immediately overwhelming, but when
compared to 2D and 3D animation that requires extensive
training and software knowledge, stop motion is unique in
that it’s relatively easy to figure out yourself.
