Why Does App Xenophobia Exist in UK HealthcareScott Hague
This presentation was conducted at the Private Healthcare Summit in London June 23rd 2015.
The presentation is focused on the opportunity for the healthcare industry to adopt mobile apps in the UK, yet many organisations, both private and public show a resistance and reluctance to consider mobile apps as a viable tool to engage and promote better health outcomes.
We look at what the healthcare sector can learn from retail giants like Amazon and Ebay and we put forward a treatment plan to help manage what we term 'app xenophobia' in the UK healthcare sector.
This document discusses how technology is enabling major changes in healthcare and opportunities for patient engagement. It notes that a university medical center with over 11,000 employees and 1,000 beds aims to significantly impact healthcare. Technologies like 3D printing, sensors, and mobile apps are discussed as enabling new models of remote and do-it-yourself healthcare. The role of patients is shifting from passive recipients of care to active partners in their health. New alliances between organizations will be needed to support innovations that put patients first and reimburse for health outcomes rather than services.
85% of clinical trials fail to recruit enough patients, 80% fail to finish on time. A key issue is 70% of patients live more that 2 hours from the study site. Wearable devices can support the collection of real world data in the patients home as well as create novel endpoints

Using Spark in Healthcare Predictive Analytics in the OR - Data Science Pop-u...Domino Data Lab
The prevailing issue when working with Operating Room (OR) scheduling within a hospital setting is that it is difficult to schedule and predict available OR block times. This leads to empty and unused operating rooms leading to longer waiting times for patients for their procedures. Using multi-variate linear regression, we will show how they can predict available OR block times using Spark MLlib resulting in better OR utilization and shorter wait times for patients. Presented by Denny Lee, Data Scientist and Evangelist at Databricks.
Mobile companion apps can be used to extend the patient-provider relationship beyond traditional in-person interactions. However, past health apps have often failed because they were disconnected from existing health records and clinical workflows. Effective companion apps would need to integrate with electronic health record systems used by providers and address how doctors would use the apps as part of their existing practices. Developing companion apps can help improve patient engagement, satisfaction, and trust in providers by providing information to patients before and after visits and strengthening the personal connection in healthcare.

Cell Therapy Expansion and Challenges in Autoimmune DiseaseHealth Advances
There is increasing confidence that cell therapies will soon play a role in the treatment of autoimmune disorders, but the extent of this impact remains to be seen. Early readouts on autologous CAR-Ts in lupus are encouraging, but manufacturing and cost limitations are likely to restrict access to highly refractory patients. Allogeneic CAR-Ts have the potential to broaden access to earlier lines of treatment due to their inherent cost benefits, however they will need to demonstrate comparable or improved efficacy to established modalities.
In addition to infrastructure and capacity constraints, CAR-Ts face a very different risk-benefit dynamic in autoimmune compared to oncology, highlighting the need for tolerable therapies with low adverse event risk. CAR-NK and Treg-based therapies are also being developed in certain autoimmune disorders and may demonstrate favorable safety profiles. Several novel non-cell therapies such as bispecific antibodies, nanobodies, and RNAi drugs, may also offer future alternative competitive solutions with variable value propositions.
Widespread adoption of cell therapies will not only require strong efficacy and safety data, but also adapted pricing and access strategies. At oncology-based price points, CAR-Ts are unlikely to achieve broad market access in autoimmune disorders, with eligible patient populations that are potentially orders of magnitude greater than the number of currently addressable cancer patients. Developers have made strides towards reducing cell therapy COGS while improving manufacturing efficiency, but payors will inevitably restrict access until more sustainable pricing is achieved.
Despite these headwinds, industry leaders and investors remain confident that cell therapies are poised to address significant unmet need in patients suffering from autoimmune disorders. However, the extent of this impact on the treatment landscape remains to be seen, as the industry rapidly approaches an inflection point.

Hi, I am Cheong, cofounder of LucidAct. We launched our AI Assistant for Chronic Care Management 8 months ago.
Today it is helping 100 nurses manage over 30,000 patients, and converted 100% of our trials to paying customers.
Medicare is paying for Chronic Care Management, but hospitals and clinics,
and their Electronic Medical Record systems are not equipped to handle long-term Chronic Care activities.
I worked with nurse Mary who had to manually track patient statuses, and stay after hours to figure out what to do for her patients next.
Yet avoidable hospitalizations and deaths still happened.
Now Mary can easily pull up the patients to focus on,
prevent patients from falling thru the crack via smart notifications,
and save time with task automation.
In fact Mary and team are managing 5x the patients they used to, and even rolled out Remote Patient Monitoring in LucidAct, effectively more than doubling their revenues.
Mary and team are not alone, here’re others we have engaged with, including XXX Hospital.
And here’s more: it’s a $111B market, going after it is
a team of industry veterans. Grace led team to accelerate time to treatment at Stanford Cancer Center. I co-invented patented technologies licensed to Microsoft, Adobe, and the like at UCSF Health.
Aging population, and availability of insurance dollars are fueling the global momentum of Chronic Care Management. We are leading with a unique and effective solution. Please join us! Thank you!
