from highway “traffic cams” to private and office,
indoor and outdoor surveillance cameras, the imagery
is transformed and edited in near realtime. An additional
semantic layer is added through subtitles that overlay the
images, also computer-processed and extracted from
weblogs and personal-yet-anonymous online diaries.
While the software is programmed to generate this
cinematic flow of images and words in autonomous botnet
mode, it is possible for a dedicated viewer to interact and
influence the results of the mix through a custom touch-
screen interface.

Installation vidéo (site specific)

NO SIGNAL is a series of short videos created for the electronic
billboard of the main railway station in Geneva. The basic
material was gathered from the surveillance cameras installed
at various locations inside the station. This footage is combined
with fragments of hollywood hi-tech thrillers, resulting in
minimalistic micro-narratives touching the subject of control
through technology. The videos were screened inbetween the
usual advertisements for more than a month, during July and
August 2006, in the frame of the festival 50 JPG (50 jours pour la
photographie).
publicitaire. »

Initiated in May 2007 during a workshop at the Mapping Festival in Geneva, Screenshot taken during rehearsal, Berlin, October 2009.
Switzerland, Æther9 is a collaborative art project exploring the field of realtime
video transmission.
Developed by an online networked group of international visual artists/collectives
working through Oceania, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and into the Americas,
Æther9 has evolved during the past two years into a framework for video/audio
performance, the foundations being distributed authorship, cross-platform and
«remote» performance of streaming audio and visual material to a nomadic web
interface.
The system functions as an open platform for participants of varying technical
levels to transmit imagery in real-time and interact through a structured narrative
performance questioning the issues of presence/absence, remote/local, identity
and intimacy in the context of the electronic space.
The tool used to upload images during the performance from diverse locations
within the online interface is developed by the Æther9 participants themselves
and is therefore a powerful instrument that can be modified to suit the precise
needs of each performance. Since its inception, Æther9 has performed both Screenshot of a performance based on Samuel

8. « Beyond the technical aspects of the framework, whose
functionalities continue to evolve, it became equally crucial
to develop a structured narrative that would allow the
performers to articulate their individual visions in a common
language that is also understandable for the international
remote viewers. Experiments in narrative technique and
degrees of improvisation continue to be developed at internal
rehearsals and then tested in front of various audiences (at
MAAC Gallery, Brussels, Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam, and
the NetUser4 Conference, Bulgaria). The author/performers
quickly found that building the composite voice of Æther9
required finding a new way of scripting for simultaneous
multi-streamed narrative. Mastery of a layered naturalistic
Performance in Beirut, Lebanon, September 2008 expression that can accommodate a certain amount of
improvising includes learning to share our varied skill sets
and life experience without face-to-face interaction.
One perspective envisioned by the collective is to base
future performances on historical source texts, and
international public domain cultural artifacts, ranging from
19th century theories on Aether (a medium facilitating
transmission through the global atmosphere) to the
synchronous screenplays used during Dada performances or
early Greek and Roman theater. »
