Business Law and Ethics Case Study on Diversity
Case #1 Webb vs. City of Philadelphia
This case involves Kimberlie Webb and the City of Philadelphia (mainly the police department).
The case was heard by the United States court of appeals, third circuit in 2009.
The suit was filed because Webb believed her religious rights were being decimated against.
Webb is a Muslim woman who servers on the Philadelphia Police Department. Webb asked
permission to wear a headdress that would not cover her face or ears due to her religious beliefs.
She was disciplined for failing to comply with Police Department Directive 78 (which basically
states that all officers must wear a certain uniform and dress in a certain way in order to appear
uniform and unbiased).

A woman wearing a headdress is more noticeable and would clearly show that she is of a specific
religion.
Question 3. (a)A pizza company not making any exceptions to its rule that drivers must be clean
shaven could be found discriminatory because this only applies to men since a very small
population of woman grow beards. It could also be found to be discriminatory against African
American men since most of a medical condition that is painful when they shave. (b) Bank does
not allow men to wear earrings. This would also be unfair because it is bias to one sex(gender). (c)
Casino hires men and women as cocktail waiters. Women are required to wear 3 inch heals and
make up, men can wear any dress shoe. This is very discriminatory by making woman wear make
up and 3 inch heals. I couldn t wear 3 inch heals that would kill my feet and I d probably fall over a
bunch. Also requiring woman to wear make up isn t fair either. Men don t have to wear make
up. Some women don t like to wear make up because it clogs the pours on their face causing
breakouts. I don t like wearing make up because I don t like the feeling on my face.

Security Dillemma Ethnic Conflict Essay
The security dilemma can be used explain and predict ethnic conflict within a given state. Posen s
argument is supported by the belief that the basic tenets of realism provide a clear view of the
security dilemma and its relationship with ethnic conflict. I believe the security dilemma in general
is largely based in realisttheory, and therefore fails to view international relations fairly. I believe
that liberalism offers important insight into dealing with conflict that Posen fails to address.
Realist theory believes that one states military improvements are undistinguishable as offensive or
defensive, and are seen as threats to another state. This, in turn, requires the opposing state to
improve its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cooperation can occur between groups, if they can see the security it will provide. Mutual
agreements can be reached by ethnic groups to cooperate prior to conflict, which can secure their
self interest.
Posen feels agreements are often reached after conflicts have already began with cease fires. He
also contends a cease fire only occurs when one side feels successful and the opposing side fears
the result of continued conflict. Posen argues that a cease fire does not mean peace, and often
comes too far along in the conflict, proving international organizations are unable to diminish the
security dilemma. This idea further presupposes the ideas of realist. Realist are traditionally
skeptical of the ability of international organizations to act as planned. Realist feel that states will
not place their self interest the hands of other countries.
I contend that international organizations can play a major role in ameliorating conflict between
ethnic groups. If an international organization, acting as a mediating third party, can take steps to
clear misperceptions between competing groups, conflict can be avoided. Also international
organizations provide other countries the opportunity to take collective action.
Posen argues that strong group identity and military power are viewed always as threats by

What Is The Theme Of The Pie By Gary Soto
At some point in almost everyone s childhood, there is a moment of deliberate wrongdoing,
followed by panic and guilt. Perhaps it is standing on the water spout outside the house and
neglecting to inform an adult when the pipe breaks and spews water into the backyard. Maybe it
is lying to a parent about the whereabouts of a dollar after the ice cream truck goes by. For author
Gary Soto, it was stealing a piefrom the neighborhood grocery store. In his autobiography, Soto
recounts the story and emotions of his six year old self taking an apple pie off the rack and
walking home with it, only to be overwhelmed by a guilt ridden conscience. Throughout the
narrative, Soto uses imagery and precise diction to recreate his experiences as a guilty... Show more

This changes with the appearance of Cross Eyed Johnny, a neighborhood boy who asks for some
pie and is denied. Soto continues to eat, but tears blurred [his] eyes as [he] remembered the
grocer s forehead . This time, the mention of tears is not because it was about the best thing [he]
had ever tasted but rather because he felt true guilt. He is reminded of the angelic grocer, and
even though he is beginning to feel horrible continues to stuff his face with pie. Cross Eyed
Johnny comments, your hands are dirty, before [climbing] his roof to watch the other boy eat.
This once again brings up the symbolism of dirty hands, as though they are tainted with sin. The
symbolism intensifies as Cross Eyed Johnny [jumps] off and [hobbles] away because the fall
had hurt him . This represents a fall from grace, for the young Soto has committed perhaps the
worst sin of his six year long life. He begins to feel paranoid and sees the pie tin [glaring] at [him]
and feeling his face sticky with guilt . The personification of the pie tin shows that the boy feels
like he is being watched and judged for his sin, and wet imagery is once again used to describe the
stickiness of guilt. The sweetness was too tempting to resist, but now he has to deal with the guilt
that clings to him covers his conscience. As he sits on the curb, A car

What Is The Dramatic Irony In The Black Cat By Edgar Allan...
The Black Cat is an old short story written by Edgar Allan Poe an American Writer. It is a horror
fiction story which demonstrate the fascinating changes that the human mind has during the
abuse of alcohol. The protagonist is physiological corrupter by the abuse of alcohol and his mind
play games with itself. He changes his personality as the story progresses and the way that he
treats others around him. Everyone is affected by his behavior even his lovely cat. The cat
becomes the object of his hate and in some way it is the first thing that he blames about his
irrational acts. In the short story The Black Cat , Edgar Allan Poe, uses a varied forms of Irony,
dramatic Irony, verbal Irony, and situation irony to produce a transformation of love threw hate
along of the story.
In dramatic Irony, occurs when the readers are aware about what is going to happen, but the
characters do not have any clue about what is going on. In The Black Cat , the story begins with
the main character sentenced to death, but with one story to tell. The Irony here is that he was
not aware about how his life was going to change. In the beginning he is describing how happy
was his childhood and how much he loved his pets. In the second paragraph of the story the
main character describes his personality as a child in the first sentence From my infancy I was
noted for the docility and humanity of my disposition. My tenderness of heart was even so
conspicuous as to make me the jest of my companions (3). He was a lovely child with an
uncertain future. Another irony finds it on the story is how he describes the fidelity and love that
the man can own There is something in the unselfish and self sacrificing love of a brute, which
goes directly to the heart of him who has had frequent occasion to test the paltry friendship and
gossamer fidelity of mere Man (3 4). When the story is progressing he is transforming to a violent
man without any act of compassion towards his faithful pet, which actually represented
faithfulness. He is represented himself as a child with a lovely personality, but he is not aware that
the lovely child was going to transform in an alcoholic man with a violent personality willing to
kill mercilessly.

Racism In Friday Night Lights
Racism was a consistent theme throughout the entirety of Friday Night Lights (2015) and was
intertwined with many of the issues and concepts discussed here. Odessa held onto its racial
ideologies for much longer than it should have, even with Federal lawsuits against them
(Bissinger, 2015; pg. 107 Coakley, 2015; pg. 227). These beliefs were deeply held and acted
upon that they still were intact even after the desegregation of the schools. The Southside of
Odessa had been and continued to be classified as the low income and minority side of town
where the blacks and Hispanics lived, while the East side was for the wealthy and white citizens.
The railroad tracks that ran through the heart of town served as the divider for this segregation,
or as Lanita Akins called it: The American version of the Berlin Wall (Bissinger, 2015; pg. 99).
The physical separation wasn t the only racial issue that Odessa had. Blacks and Hispanics were
both quite underrepresented in Permian High, only making up about 31% of the student body
(Bissinger, 2015; pg. 175). The black population of Odessa seemed to get the blunt end of the
racial stigma though, which is especially seen at the beginning of chapter 5 with the use and
explanation of why some Odessans used the word... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was also common for Texas high school football as a whole. These behaviors were seen both off
and on the field and included extreme play against the opposing team, drinking, drug use, fighting,
hubris, and institutional corruption (Bissinger, 2015 Coakley, 2015). Off field behavior included
mainly drinking and getting into fights, though the citizens of Odessa even went as far as shooting
a gun inside a bar at one point. The player s drinking had become bad enough that an anonymous
letter frowning upon that behavior found its way into their lockers while they were in the playoffs

The article is about how Jeb Bush calls for U.S. ground troops to fight ISIS (Bobic). He
announced this on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 and he is the latest Bush to advocate for a
military campaign in the Middle East (Bobic). Ultimately, to accomplish this, he believes that we
need to intensify our efforts in the air and on the ground (Bobic). The ground forces should consist
of the United States, NATO, and Arab partners (Bobic). His announcement of this military action
in the Middle East was due to the Paris terror attacks where at least 129 people died and hundreds
more were injured by ISIS(Bobic). Lastly, Bush faulted President Obama and 2016 Democratic

The Struggle Of Democratic Peace
Although countries in South America are not democratic for most of the last century, it has the
fewest inter state wars there, which can be explained by geopolitics with balance of power, the
trade off between benefits and costs, and relations among countries in this area.
According to the theory of Democratic Peace, since democratic leaders have a larger wining
coalitions, in order to keep in office, they need to gain support from selectorate, and democratic
leaders facing with war are more inclined to shift extra resources into the war effort than are
autocrats . In addition to trying harder, democrats are more selective in their choice of targets and
democrats only initiate wars they expect to win. As a generalization, it is an empirical law that
democracies do not fight wars with one another . On the contrary, with a small winning coalition,
non democrats leaders are facing less risk of being deposed than are their democratic counterparts ,
therefore, they are not constrained by the selectorate and they are inclined to choose war when the
expected benefit is larger than the cost of conflict, or larger than the benefit from negotiation. This
may lead to the conclusion that non democrats are more likely to have conflicts with other countries.
However, when we look at South America, despite the differences between some of the continent s
countries, it has not experienced full scale interstate warfare in over 80 years . This is puzzling,
since the

Despite the recent downturn in revenue, the Coffee and Snack Shops industry is mature. For
these reasons, industry research firm IBIS World has updated a report on the Coffee Snack
Shops industry in its growing industry report collection. According to IBIS World Industry
Report, in the five years to 2014, industry revenue is expected to increase an annualized 2.7% to
$30.2 billion. This trend is expected to continue into 2014, with an expected growth of 1.4%.
Major operators like Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts are expected to expand their menus in the five
years to 2019 in order to increase sales and access higher profit margins. Both Starbucks and
Dunkin Donuts plan on rolling out hundreds of new stores over the next five years, making up for
lost ground they experienced during the recession. Dunkin , which is highly concentrated in the
east, is aiming to expand westward to steal market share from local competitors. The major chains
are also expected to invest more in international growth as part of a long term strategy, because
many larger players view emerging economies as markets with huge potential for growth and long
term profitability. (Lauren Robi, An Analysis of Starbucks as a Company and an International
Business, 2011)

Analysis Of Beauty When The Dancer Is The Self
An unknown author from thethingswesay.com once said, Beauty is the opposite of perfection it s
about confidence, charisma and character. For many people, women especially, this concept
seems unrealistic. In the autobiography Beauty: When the dancer is the self by Alice Walker,
she identifies with this perception of life and applies it to the societal views of beauty. Through
her autobiography, she sets the stage by explaining her childhood, beginning with her sassy and
independent nature as a two and a half year old. Proceeding several years later, she describes her
pain from being shot in the eye by her brother and the cover up that altered their relationship.
Next came the feelings of diffidence and timidity from the accident, that led to her physical and
mental decline. Finally, the acceptance of past events, followed by, the ability to see the world
in her eye (Walker 40) enables Walker to value herself and spread the message of self acceptance.
Using the pain felt from that shot, both mental and physical, she is able to define a new chapter
in her life and become an award winning novelist. By writing to a broad audience, she is able to
make a greater impact as she delves into the process of taking pain and despair and transforming
it into self celebration. In Walker s essay, she addresses this reoccurring theme by employing
structural preferences, logical appeals and the use of imagery to cultivate a powerful message of
personal growth. In Walker s essay, she

water iceotherwise known as snow. When snow falls in cold enough temperatures it will create
mounds, also in this cold temperature lakes will start to freeze over. When this happens kids can
go sledding, they can also enjoy the snow by having a good old fashioned snowball fight. Kids can
also go to lakes that are solid enough and play hockey or ice skate around with their friends. For

Racial Diversity In Media
Racial Diversity is a sensitive topic, especially with all of the current controversy about race. One
specific issue pertaining to this is the portrayal and representation of Asian people in media (i.e.
television, movies, magazines, etc.). I hope to bring awareness to this controversial matter in a
respectful and peaceful manner through in depth research. As an Asian American woman, I am
extremely passionate about this issue because it hits home. I live in a society where there is not a
lot of representation or people I can directly relate to in media. While watching TV shows and
movies, I have noticed that all of the actors and actresses are predominantly Caucasian and when an
Asian actoror actress is casted, he/she is cast as the supporting character or a villain. Growing up in
an Asian household where you are taught to be proud of your heritage and watching these shows
and movies was not something that made me want to have pride in my ancestry. It left me without a
strong Asian Americanrole model in my childhood; someone I could aspire to be. People often
assume that if a show or movie contains one racially diverse person, it should be considered
diverse ; this assumption or viewpoint is completely absurd. This is further described as
tokenism, the practice of making only a perfunctory or symbolic effort to do a particular thing,
especially by recruiting a small number of people from underrepresented groups in order to give
the appearance of sexual or racial equality

A Comparison Of Two Cities In William Gibson s Neuromancer
The cities that are created in Neuromancer by William Gibson are over the top scaled versions of a

philosophy is that everything that has beauty may not be beautiful. The cities can vary from
extremely rundown, gang related to corporate family greed desire. Despite how any cityrepresents
itself, the setting makes them all have the same philosophical representation that Gibson wants to
express. The conditions of Neuromancer s setting writes out how humans, despite technological
advances, continue to fail on human behalf.

The Characteristics Of Robert Walton s Frankenstein
In the first few letters, opening the book, readers are introduced to the writer, Robert Walton, a
sailor with hopes of discovery. While addressing his letters to his sister, readers are able to follow
Waltons oceanic journey to the Arctic. In his letters he speaks of this journey, what ushers his
passion to learn, the story of his upbringing and his desire for a companion. Readers can see that he
is not only driven, and curious, but empathetic and lonesome as well.
Upon reading these quotes, it soon becomes clear that Frankenstein has a longing to retain
information. He is able to portray this educational longing through phrases such as having an
eager desire to learn, key word being eager. Frankenstein and I somewhat differ on our attitude
towards learning. I wish I was as motivated as he, but I lack the desire that steers him. I do desire
education, but just not to the extent that Frankenstein does. Not only does Frankenstein speak of
having access to a routine education, such as a school, but he also speaks of his ability to self
teach himself. In order to do so, he must have an immense amount of maturity and an ample amount
of both independence and self sufficiency. I only wish that I had these characteristics as strong as he.

Is Belisa Crepusculario s Character In Two Words By Isabel...
Two Words is a short story written by Isabel Allende. In it, Allende uses the laborious background
and strong personality of her protagonist, Belisa Crepusculario, to highlight that a female can be
empowered in a patriarchal society by developing her personality and linguistic charms. Belisa is
brave, determined, tough and well educated and stands in opposition to the figure of the
submissive, effeminate, and innocent traditional woman. In the first location of the story, Allende
demonstrates that Belisa has a strong sense of survival that she had developed through the
hardships in her childhood, which ultimately guide her through life threatening situations, such as
hydropenia and being kidnapped. She grows up in a desperately poor family, and, when she was
12, she had no occupation or virtue other than having withstood hunger and the exhaustion of
centuries. (1) She has to suffer from the effects of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Belisa makes her own way in life by doing business and selling words to others. One day, a cloud

below, the Court grants the motion. FACTS The material facts are undisputed.1 In September

Essay On Hurricane
Around a month ago, Mother Nature unleashed its potential power towards the south of the United
States. First, hurricane Harvey did a great damage on the Southern part of Texas as a Category 4. A
few weeks later, another two major hurricanes, hurricane Maria and Irma, did the greatest damage
in the Caribbean Islands. The good thing is the U.S government and many cooperation s stepped in
to help its American citizens because it s the duty of the government. Therefore, FEMA (Federal
Emergency Management Agency), the agency of the United States Department of Homeland

Since Puerto Rico is in the middle of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, they should ve
prepared the military ships to leave right after the second hurricane destroyed the rest of Puerto
Rico. Therefore, I would ensure that FEMA responds right away to any part of the United States
because all American Citizens deserve to be treated equality. For example, if the government
gave Texans 15 billion dollars, therefore Puerto Rico should get more than that because of the
critical condition it is. I know a lot of Texans were impacted tremendously but they got help from
the surrounding states and faster help because it was in the United States. Overall, I would
make a policy that ensure every citizen gets help as soon as possible. Furthermore, another
policy I would make in case of any natural disaster emergency for any state to get the same
distribution, is to classify how much help it needs besides money. For example, Texas and
Florida were some of the states that were affected but we know they will get help faster because
of their location. I know people that live in California but they traveled to Texas to help.
Everybody was asking for donations asking for food, water, and clothes to help everybody in
need. So, everybody was helping because it s the moral duty to help others when somebody needs
help. Furthermore, I know that many American Citizens are going to help because we can get to
that destination that needs help. However, if any state that is outside of the

Why do you think the Darwin Island finches survived this time even though the clutch size was
small? a. The differences between Darwin Island and Wallace Island are just due to random
chance. b. Although clutch size was smaller on Darwin Island, the initial beak size was large
enough to allow the finches to utilize the hard seeds and survive. On both Darwin Island and
Wallace Island the populations grew and adapted to the hard seeds available. c. Clutch size must
have increased on Darwin Island. 9. Precipitation plays an important role in the evolution of
these finches. Low levels of precipitation results in plants that produce hard seeds. High levels of
precipitation favor plants that produce smaller softer seeds. Medium levels of rain produce
medium seeds. Click the New Expt button and then click the Change Inputs button. Click the
Precipitation button. Notice the percentage distribution of hard seeds, medium seeds, and soft
seeds as precipitation is changed. Finches with small beaks are better at utilizing soft seeds as a
food source. Medium and hard seeds require larger beaks. Increase the annual precipitation on

The Board of Directors – Roles and Responsibilities
The Board of Directors roles and responsibilities
The board s key purpose is to ensure the company s prosperity by collectively directing the
company s affairs, whilst meeting the appropriate interests of its shareholders and stakeholders. The
objects of the company are defined in the Memorandum of Association and regulations are laid out
in the Articles of Association.
Appointment of directors
The ultimate control as to the composition of the board of directors rests with the shareholders,
who can always appoint, and more importantly, sometimes dismiss a director. The shareholders can
also fix the minimum and maximum number of directors. However, the board can usually appoint
(but not dismiss) a director to his office as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Directors must act with due skill and care. Directors must consider the interests of employees of the
company.
Calling a directors meeting
A director, or the secretary at the request of a director, may call a directors meeting. A secretary
may not call a meeting unless requested to do so by a director or the directors. Each director must
be given reasonable notice of the meeting, stating its date, time and place. Commonly, seven days is
given but what is reasonable depends in the last resort on the circumstances
Non executive directors
Legally speaking, there is no distinction between an executive and non executive director. Yet there
is inescapably a sense that the non executive s role can be seen as balancing that of the executive
director, so as to ensure the board as a whole functions effectively. Where the executive director has
an intimate knowledge of the company, the non executive director may be expected to have a wider
perspective of the world at large.

The chairman of the board
The articles usually provide for the election of a chairman of the board. They empower the
directors to appoint one of their own number as chairman and to determine the period for which he
is to hold office. If no chairman is elected, or the elected chairman is not present within five
minutes of the time fixed for the meeting or is unwilling to preside, those directors in attendance
may usually elect one of their number

Leopold II was a king that occupied the Belgian throne from 1865 to 1912, but he is more
remembered for his terrible effect on the Congo Basin. In the Belgian Conference from 1884
1885, Leopold II became recognized as the sole ruler of the Congo Basin area. He ironically
dubbed this land as the Congo Free State, which became his personal property, and where his cruel
mistreatment of the natives took place. Under his rule, up to tens of millions of Africans were
massacred, and even more were inhumanely tortured. Under Leopold s rule, the Congo Free State

He first divided the land into two areas Free Trade Zone, and the Domaine PrivГ©. The Free
Trade Zone was available to Europeans who were interested in purchasing monopoly leases of
anything valuable which was mostly ivory and rubber. The Domaine PrivГ©, on the other hand,
was Leopold s personal land. King Leopold s gain in wealth is shown from a Gondola study in
1966. The study shows that from 1888 to 1905, the value of rubber greatly increased from
260,000 Belgian Francs to 39,874,000 Belgian France. The value of ivory increased as well,
from 1,096,000 Belgian Francs to 4,669,000 Belgian Francs between 1888 and 1890. Although
the rubber and ivory trade presented Leopold with an enormous profit, it also lead to his
downfall. The large shipments of rubber being exchanged with guns and ammunition made people
suspicious. People like Edmund Dene Morel, an investigative journalist, and merchants who
wanted to break the Congo s monopoly like William Cadbury rose up to expose Leopold II. In
1904, Roger Casement delivered an eyewitness report and all of his details were proven. The
nations present during the Berlin Conference agreed that the power must be removed from

Opening the novel, it is immediately apparent that Jeremiah causes many miracles, such as Ruben s
miraculous birth after not breathing for twelve minutes. These godlike miracles aren t normal to

of a truck, pacing and praying. Then, he went on pacing Godas my witness walking on air. (17)
Enger uses biblical references all throughout the book to compare the two. Jeremiah walking on air
is easily comparable to Jesuswalking on water, because both men are walking on something
impossible and any normal man can t do. This helps for sure turn Jeremiah into a Christ like figure.

Finding Common Ground And Interests
Finding Common Ground / Interests An overriding framework of value creation, exploration of
opportunities, interests and common goals was identified by both parties from the onset of the
negotiation. Both groups where able to find common ground through setting out all issues

possibilities of collaboration and a win win (Falcao, 2010). Within all negotiations there is a

collaboration both parties require the foresight and key behaviours to ensure a successful
outcome, both parties are required to be open minded on the possibilities of value creation and

required to be mindful that goals can be achieved through multiple routes and exploration is
required to achieve valued propositions for all parties, this may include parties making concessions

Understanding the Motivation off Alcibiades
Alcibiades was a highly motivated individual with a drive to gain power by any means necessary.
Alcibiades upbringing conditioned him, one might say entitled him, to power and influence, and
his self serving actions had the sole objectives of surpassing his predecessors and achieving glory.
To understand the motivation of Alcibiades, we must look to his upbringing and character to
examine his sense of entitlement. Alcibiades was born into an aristocratic Athenian family so he
would have been pro oligarchy; he was the son of Cleinias (Thuc 5.43) who was slain at the battle
of Coroneia (Plut. Alcibiades 1). After the death of his father, Alcibiades was placed under the
guardianship of Pericles (Plut. Alcibiades 1), who was leader of the state and the most influential
man of his day (Thuc 1.127). The connection that Alcibiades shared with Pericles, enabled him to
enjoy the company of influential figures throughout Athens, and consequently; they desired him. It
was said, many well born men were swarming around Alcibiades and seeking his company (Plut.
Alcibiades 4), being held in such high regard by the elite would have boosted his sense of self
importance, gained him influence and bring about great personal fame (Thu. 6.16). Alcibiades was

vaporized. They are detained and ultimately executed. But before that they are wiped from the

person from the only record, the Party s record, they are removed from history and essentially
existence. All of this is justified by an eternal war. Eternal in that Oceania has always been at war...

All this would be less of a problem if the NSLs did as they said were to do, prevent terrorism. But
in reality, few NSLs result in convictions of terrorists. The FBI issued 192,499 NSLs between
2003 and 2006 ( Surveillance Under the Patriot Act 1). Of that amount, one led to a terrorist
conviction ( Surveillance Under the Patriot Act 1). Based off of this data, NSLs are not being
used in a manner that is preventing terrorism. Instead, they are being used to obtain large
amounts of information on innocent people. In response to nine NSLs issued, the phone records
of 11,000 people were given to the FBI ( Surveillance Under the Patriot Act 1). Scaling that ratio
up to the 192,499 NSLs previously mentioned, that s over 237 million people. Even halving that
ratio still means the phone records of over 118 million people are handed over to the FBI without
the judiciary involved, without them committing a crime. The American government knows who

The Necessity of Keeping University Entrance Examination
THE NECESSITY OF KEEPING UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

Outline
I. Introduction: The Vietnam education reform: omitting university entrance examination II.
Reasons for not abolishing university entrance examination: A. Best selection guarantee B. The
shortage of colleges and universities C. The effect of entrance exams III. Conclusion
After a few recent years of debates, Vietnam education and training Department has made the

Vu Quang Viet indicates that only 1.6% of Vietnamese citizens can pursue their tertiary study ( Chi
tieГўu cho gГao duГЇc: Nhöõng con soГЎ giaГ¤t mГ¬nh! . VietNamNet. 13 Feb. 2006), which
means that the number of seats in colleges and universities are limited, and admission, thus, is
extremely selective. Therefore, conducting the university entrance exams is the most logical and
impartial way to decide whom to pursue higher study. As we can see, in every aspect, people
have to compete to get what fulfills their needs when there is insufficient source of supplies. In
ancient eras, when people lived in caves, they fought for food when there was shortage of food. In
modern history, big countries fought for colonies, which caused World War II. In other words,
when everyone wants their needs to be met while there is shortage of supplies, they have to
compete for it. None can be exempted from this fact. Similarly, in this case, every student wants to
get admission when there are few available seats, they have to compete for those seats. It is logical.
The third point is that the national university examination will encourage students to study. Thus,
the qualification of admitted students will be enhanced. How could we be sure that those who
admitted into universities are able to pursue their study? The answer is that, if they are able to pass
the entrance tests, their levels are high enough to follow their academic path. In order to pass the
entrance exams, they have to

How Is Jay Portrayed In The Great Gatsby
The word great can be defined in many different ways. From another s viewpoint, a great person
is knowledgeable about their skills and is beyond the average of a regular person. Despite this, in
the novel, The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald portrays Gatsby as a great character who is living the
American Dream the perfect persona, but I disagree.
Gatsby introduces himself as Jay Gatsby, but his real name is James Gatz, which questions his true
identity. At the beginning of the novel, Gatsby said he is educated at Oxford and is from a
wealthy family, in the Middle East, that is all deceased. It turns out, James Gatz of North
Dakota...his parents where shiftless and unsuccessful fame people... (Fitzgerald 98), and only
attended college for two weeks at St. Olaf in Minnesota. Gatsby s parents are not dead. He just
never accepted them as his parents because of their poverty. Gatsby leave his home, determined to
search for a better life. Most importantly, a person who is great wouldn t hide their rightful identity
and this shows that there are two sides of Gatsby. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Death of Print
ENG 122 404
27 February 2012
The Death of Print and the Drowning of Quality Writing Daniel Okrent has been in the
publishing industry his whole career. He is a published author and has served as an editor for
Time, Life, and the New York Times. In a 1999 lecture to students attending Columbia University
s School of Journalism, Okrent predicts, I believe they (news papers, magazines, and books), and
all forms of print are dead (Okrent 578). A little harsh, wouldn t you agree? But fear not, he then
goes on to describe how even though the death of print is inevitable, it really doesn t make a
difference because it is the words, sentences, and paragraphs in those forms of print that are
important. Now, the majority of the reading I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Imagine reading a book and every other page being something completely irrelevant to the book

magazine, when turned sideways much like a single page of a newspaper. It weighs six ounces.
It s somewhat flexible, which makes it easy to transport. Its screen, utterly glare free, neither

in 1999. That doesn t seem too far off from what s available today. Actually, it sounds a little
better. Okrent later makes a good comparison in the format in which cell phones are sold today
and how tablets may be similarly sold in the future. He argues it s less about the vessel and more
about the content in which they wish to sell you on that vessel. As cell phone companies do when

Hobbit Book Comparison
The story started with the four children whose names were Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy.
One day, they stepped through a wardrobe and entered a different world, NARNIA, a land
frozen in eternal winter, a country waiting to be set free. It was enslaved by the power of the
White Witch. Edmund was absorbed by her, desiring to become the king of NARNIA. However,
he was exploited, and his brother and sister would go to save him. They needed to face many
problems. Thus, their adventure began. As all hope was lost, the return of the Great lion, Aslan,
signaled a great change and even a great sacrifice. Finally, Justice would defeat the evil in the war.

the forrest because man is the most dangerous animal of them all... (Haugen 32). Who is the
twisted man behind this letter? This is certainly, without a doubt, the Zodiac Killer. Zodiac had
written many letters to the police departments in Northern California between the years of 1969
through 1978. The majority of the letters were written as ciphers, (coded letters), which still
today remain coded. Zodiac had denied the authorities any leads on his identity which still
remains as an unsolved mystery today. So who was, or still is, the identity of The Zodiac Killer?
After all these years, the real question remains, is there enough evidence to identify Zodiac and

Both survivors were able to give the authorities description of The Zodiac Killer s identity.
Mageau described the murderer as a young white man with a large face who was approximately
5 foot 8 inches (173 centimeters) and weighing approximately 195 pounds (88 kilograms). Johns
tried to pay attention to all the details about the Zodiac during her abduction. When Johns was
taken to Patterson Police Station to tell her story of her abduction, Johns noticed a sketch of a
man whom was drawn for the murder of Paul Stine. Paul Stine had been previously murdered
prior to her abduction. Johns clarified that the sketch was a replica of her abductor. From this
limited information, there isn t enough evidence to locate Zodiac today.
From the third linked murder, Zodiac left a message on Bryan Hartnell s car door which
indicated the dates and times of each murder. The last date was cut into the door by a knife
which referred to Cecelia Shepard and Bryan Hartnell s death. As Zodiac left the crime scene,
authorities found his footprints going to and coming from the crime scene. The

Effectiveness of DARE and Project ALERT
Drug Abuse Prevention Programs:
Effectiveness of DARE and Project ALERT Although drug use among secondary school students
appears to have leveled off during the late 1990s, US adolescents continue to use alcohol, tobacco,
and marijuana at unacceptably high rates. Among eighth graders, 52% have tried alcohol, 41%
have tried cigarettes, and 20% have tried marijuana. By 12th grade these rates are substantially
higher, with large numbers of adolescents engaging in regular drug use (Ellickson, Bell, McGuigan,
1993). In spite of numerous programs implemented in elementary, middle, and high schools to

The DARE officer is required to undergo 80 hours of special training in the area of child
development, classroom management, teaching techniques, and communication skills, combined
with an additional 40 hours to prepare them to teach the high school curriculum (Ennett et al.,
1994). This training is required of all DARE Officers prior to facilitating a DARE program.
Additionally, this training equips the officer with the knowledge and expertise to answer
questions posed by the students, regarding drugs and crime, while in the classroom (Kochis,
2001). Since its initial development and implementation in Los Angeles, DARE has been
replicated, expanded, and implemented all over the country. The seemingly overwhelming
commitment and support for this program as a drug prevention program for youths is a puzzle.
Not only does it come at a time of limited economic resources, but there is little empirical
evidence of the success of DARE as a deterrent to drug use (Lynam et al., 1991). Lynam et al.
(1991) tracked over 1,000 Midwestern students who participated in Project DARE in the sixth
grade. These students were reevaluated at age 20, ten years after receiving the drug prevention
education. The study compared pre DARE levels of cigarette, alcohol, marijuana and illicit drug use
of the students to such use at age 20. Although the DARE intervention produced a few initial
improvements in the students attitudes

The Correspondent: the Spokesperson and the Mediator in Stephen Crane #146;s #147;The Open

fascinating exemplar of Naturalism, generating many studies that range from the indifference of

psychological growth happens to every man on the boat, yet is mostly depicted through the voice of

The Crucible And Salem Witch Trials Similarities
The Red Scare and the Salem Witch Trials were both events that left a mark in American history.
The Red Scare began in 1917 and took place across the United States. The Red Scare was known
as the widespread promotion of anti communism. The Salem Witch Trials began in 1692 and
took place in Salem, Massachusetts. The Salem Witch Trials were various court hearings and
prosecutions of people in Salem accused of Witchcraft. Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible, a play
about the Salem Witch Trials, to send a message to Senator Joseph McCarthy, the face of the Red
Scare. Even though both events took place at completely different times their connection remains
profound. The Crucible and the Red Scare have various similarities and allegories that make both
events connect despite the gap of time. Arthur Miller, wrote The Crucible with the intention of
comparing the Red Scare to the Salem Witch Trials. One of the many similarities between the
Red Scare and the Salem Witch Trials is the way both events started. Both events were started by
people making false accusations. During the Red Scare people were accused of being
communists. At one of his speeches in Wheeling, West Virginia, in 1950, Senator Joseph McCarthy
claimed to hold in my hand a list of individuals who were both serving in government and
participating in the communist party. (Brinkley2) Thanks to McCarthy s popular style, people
never questioned his supposed list. During the Salem Witch Trials people were accused of

A Mastopexy Case Review
A Mastopexy (breast lift) is a surgical procedure designed to lift and reshape the breasts. Following
a breast lift procedure with Dr. Nina S. Naidu, women have more youthful looking breasts and an
improved breast profile.
What a Breast Lift in Manhattan Can Accomplish
While performing a Mastopexy, Dr. Naidu raises the breasts by eliminating excess skin. She
reshapes the breasts by tightening surrounding tissue. This tightened tissue supports the new breast
contour. In addition, during a breast lift, Dr. Naidu can reduce the size of the patient s areolae (the
dark colored skin that surrounds the nipple).
Factors that Affect the Breasts

The Importance Of Child Rearing
China and America are quite different countries, not only visually but in how culture influences
daily life. Specifically, I will take a look at how each country values child rearing and how they
raise their children during childhood. I chose this topic because when I have children, I want to
personally raise my children in the best way that I can. Looking into different cultures, such as the
United Statesand China, will show me how children are raised and also the behavior of the
children as a result of how they were raised. As mentioned in an article published in Scandinavian
Journal of Psychology, individualism is valued in America, so we raise our children to exercise
independence hoping they will one day be independent. However, Chinese culture does not value
individual independence, so they raise their children to respect authority and are more controlling.
Ultimately, the goal of parentingin any culture, as stated by the same article, is raise a child who
becomes a creature of his/her culture (LUI, GUO, 2010). Child rearing is important in both
countries because both want their culture to continue on for centuries. After researching how
Americans and Chinese parents raise their children during childhood, it is evident that both countries
have very different parenting practices; however, they both want to raise children who exemplify
their own culture. In America, independence and the individual are valued the most. This ideology
both reflects and influences the

Causes Of Religious Freedom In The New England Colonies
Religious freedom varied from what colony you lived in. All of the colonies in the regions had
to deal with religious problem, whether it be persecution or being removed from that colony.
Some people had the religion/religious freedom they wanted. However, the Middle Colonies
had a lot of religious toleration while the New England Colonies had very little toleration.
Therefore some people did get the freedom they wanted, but it varied from where they lived and
who they were. The New England region consist of the four colonies Massachusetts,
Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire. The first colony found out of these four was
Massachusetts. It was found in 1620. It was led by William Bradford. The second colony to be
found was New Hampshire. It was found in 1629 by Captain John Mason. The third one was
Connecticut. The Connecticut colony was founded in 1635 by Thomas Hooker. Last but not
least is Rhode Island. It was found in 1636 by Roger Williams. The Pilgrims wanted to create an
Anglican utopia. Other religions besides Puritanism was not allowed except for in Rhode Island.
People who were not Puritans lost voting rights and were required to pay taxes to support the
Congregational Church. The Mayflower Compact was created in 1620. The Mayflower Compact
was meant to be a contract not just between the colonist, but between themselves and God. Part of
the Mayflower compact says, In the name of God, Amen. We whose names are underwritten, the

Reflection About Happiness
When I was around nine years old I lived in California. It was nothing fancy; we lived in a
standard house and I attended the elementary school I was zoned to. I was in the choir, too. The
choir was, if my memory does not fail me, a combination of fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. That
year the teacher had decided to use the song Happinessfrom the Broadway musical You re a Good
Man, Charlie Brown. While it was not a very good rendition of the piece, it stayed with me
throughout the years. For a long time I believed that happiness could be found in objects, in
buying plastic things that I would throw away a year later. But the song s catchy and
meaningful lyrics stayed in the back of my mind, providing me with a gentle reminder that my
happiness did not necessarily have to come from owning things. Despite popular belief,
happiness is not something that is bought. Happiness is not palpable. Up until a year ago, I
believed that in order to be truly happy a person had to have massive amounts of money and
materialistic products that did nothing to make them happy. Though that may be the case for
some, I found that happiness is not often found in the amount of clothes a person has, or the price
tag of their home or car. Happiness is not measured in dollars, or how many properties a person
owns, or even how much their house is worth. Happiness, to me, is a feeling that is found in
people, memories and moments. When I think of the word happy I see my grandparents house. The

The Fear Of Black Male Sexuality
Marquise Akbar The Fear of Black Male Sexuality in Baldwin s Going To See The Man
Schulman, Gary I. Race, Sex, and Violence: A Laboratory Test of the Sexual Threat of the Black
Male Hypothesis. American Journal of Sociology 79.5 (1974): 1260. Web. The potential for white
men to violently express attitudes of racism is studied to determine if the white male finds the
Black male sexually threatening and, if so, does this threat incite the proclivity for the white male
to act violently. Shulman studied 84 white, male, freshman and sophomore students at UC Santa
Barbara. According to the study, The subjects are young, educated, white men from stable homes
with no mental instability, whose values lean towards a liberal ideology. This experiment
considers Koval s psychoanalytic interpretation of white racism, based largely on the Oedipus
complex and Skolnick s belief that the conflict that fosters violent racism is a feeling of
powerlessness and insecurity in whites. Schulman s focus is to prove that a much larger population
is inclined to violent expressions of racism, and that this inclination is partially based on the
perceived sexual threat of the Black male. The experiment contrives a conflict requiring the
subjects to choose between cheating on a given task, which prevents the victims from being
shocked, or not cheating, thus shocking the victim The victims in the test conditions are a white

  • 2. Business Law and Ethics Case Study on Diversity Case #1 Webb vs. City of Philadelphia This case involves Kimberlie Webb and the City of Philadelphia (mainly the police department). The case was heard by the United States court of appeals, third circuit in 2009. The suit was filed because Webb believed her religious rights were being decimated against. Webb is a Muslim woman who servers on the Philadelphia Police Department. Webb asked permission to wear a headdress that would not cover her face or ears due to her religious beliefs. She was disciplined for failing to comply with Police Department Directive 78 (which basically states that all officers must wear a certain uniform and dress in a certain way in order to appear uniform and unbiased). The Philadelphia Police Department ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A woman wearing a headdress is more noticeable and would clearly show that she is of a specific religion. Question 3. (a)A pizza company not making any exceptions to its rule that drivers must be clean shaven could be found discriminatory because this only applies to men since a very small population of woman grow beards. It could also be found to be discriminatory against African American men since most of a medical condition that is painful when they shave. (b) Bank does not allow men to wear earrings. This would also be unfair because it is bias to one sex(gender). (c) Casino hires men and women as cocktail waiters. Women are required to wear 3 inch heals and make up, men can wear any dress shoe. This is very discriminatory by making woman wear make up and 3 inch heals. I couldn t wear 3 inch heals that would kill my feet and I d probably fall over a bunch. Also requiring woman to wear make up isn t fair either. Men don t have to wear make up. Some women don t like to wear make up because it clogs the pours on their face causing breakouts. I don t like wearing make up because I don t like the feeling on my face. Case #2 Oiler vs. Winn Dixie This case involves Peter Oiler and Winn Dixie Louisiana, Inc. • 3. Security Dillemma Ethnic Conflict Essay The security dilemma can be used explain and predict ethnic conflict within a given state. Posen s argument is supported by the belief that the basic tenets of realism provide a clear view of the security dilemma and its relationship with ethnic conflict. I believe the security dilemma in general is largely based in realisttheory, and therefore fails to view international relations fairly. I believe that liberalism offers important insight into dealing with conflict that Posen fails to address. Realist theory believes that one states military improvements are undistinguishable as offensive or defensive, and are seen as threats to another state. This, in turn, requires the opposing state to improve its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cooperation can occur between groups, if they can see the security it will provide. Mutual agreements can be reached by ethnic groups to cooperate prior to conflict, which can secure their self interest. Posen feels agreements are often reached after conflicts have already began with cease fires. He also contends a cease fire only occurs when one side feels successful and the opposing side fears the result of continued conflict. Posen argues that a cease fire does not mean peace, and often comes too far along in the conflict, proving international organizations are unable to diminish the security dilemma. This idea further presupposes the ideas of realist. Realist are traditionally skeptical of the ability of international organizations to act as planned. Realist feel that states will not place their self interest the hands of other countries. I contend that international organizations can play a major role in ameliorating conflict between ethnic groups. If an international organization, acting as a mediating third party, can take steps to clear misperceptions between competing groups, conflict can be avoided. Also international organizations provide other countries the opportunity to take collective action. Posen argues that strong group identity and military power are viewed always as threats by ... • 4. What Is The Theme Of The Pie By Gary Soto At some point in almost everyone s childhood, there is a moment of deliberate wrongdoing, followed by panic and guilt. Perhaps it is standing on the water spout outside the house and neglecting to inform an adult when the pipe breaks and spews water into the backyard. Maybe it is lying to a parent about the whereabouts of a dollar after the ice cream truck goes by. For author Gary Soto, it was stealing a piefrom the neighborhood grocery store. In his autobiography, Soto recounts the story and emotions of his six year old self taking an apple pie off the rack and walking home with it, only to be overwhelmed by a guilt ridden conscience. Throughout the narrative, Soto uses imagery and precise diction to recreate his experiences as a guilty... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This changes with the appearance of Cross Eyed Johnny, a neighborhood boy who asks for some pie and is denied. Soto continues to eat, but tears blurred [his] eyes as [he] remembered the grocer s forehead . This time, the mention of tears is not because it was about the best thing [he] had ever tasted but rather because he felt true guilt. He is reminded of the angelic grocer, and even though he is beginning to feel horrible continues to stuff his face with pie. Cross Eyed Johnny comments, your hands are dirty, before [climbing] his roof to watch the other boy eat. This once again brings up the symbolism of dirty hands, as though they are tainted with sin. The symbolism intensifies as Cross Eyed Johnny [jumps] off and [hobbles] away because the fall had hurt him . This represents a fall from grace, for the young Soto has committed perhaps the worst sin of his six year long life. He begins to feel paranoid and sees the pie tin [glaring] at [him] and feeling his face sticky with guilt . The personification of the pie tin shows that the boy feels like he is being watched and judged for his sin, and wet imagery is once again used to describe the stickiness of guilt. The sweetness was too tempting to resist, but now he has to deal with the guilt that clings to him covers his conscience. As he sits on the curb, A car ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. What Is The Dramatic Irony In The Black Cat By Edgar Allan... The Black Cat is an old short story written by Edgar Allan Poe an American Writer. It is a horror fiction story which demonstrate the fascinating changes that the human mind has during the abuse of alcohol. The protagonist is physiological corrupter by the abuse of alcohol and his mind play games with itself. He changes his personality as the story progresses and the way that he treats others around him. Everyone is affected by his behavior even his lovely cat. The cat becomes the object of his hate and in some way it is the first thing that he blames about his irrational acts. In the short story The Black Cat , Edgar Allan Poe, uses a varied forms of Irony, dramatic Irony, verbal Irony, and situation irony to produce a transformation of love threw hate along of the story. In dramatic Irony, occurs when the readers are aware about what is going to happen, but the characters do not have any clue about what is going on. In The Black Cat , the story begins with the main character sentenced to death, but with one story to tell. The Irony here is that he was not aware about how his life was going to change. In the beginning he is describing how happy was his childhood and how much he loved his pets. In the second paragraph of the story the main character describes his personality as a child in the first sentence From my infancy I was noted for the docility and humanity of my disposition. My tenderness of heart was even so conspicuous as to make me the jest of my companions (3). He was a lovely child with an uncertain future. Another irony finds it on the story is how he describes the fidelity and love that the man can own There is something in the unselfish and self sacrificing love of a brute, which goes directly to the heart of him who has had frequent occasion to test the paltry friendship and gossamer fidelity of mere Man (3 4). When the story is progressing he is transforming to a violent man without any act of compassion towards his faithful pet, which actually represented faithfulness. He is represented himself as a child with a lovely personality, but he is not aware that the lovely child was going to transform in an alcoholic man with a violent personality willing to kill mercilessly. ... • 6. Racism In Friday Night Lights Racism was a consistent theme throughout the entirety of Friday Night Lights (2015) and was intertwined with many of the issues and concepts discussed here. Odessa held onto its racial ideologies for much longer than it should have, even with Federal lawsuits against them (Bissinger, 2015; pg. 107 Coakley, 2015; pg. 227). These beliefs were deeply held and acted upon that they still were intact even after the desegregation of the schools. The Southside of Odessa had been and continued to be classified as the low income and minority side of town where the blacks and Hispanics lived, while the East side was for the wealthy and white citizens. The railroad tracks that ran through the heart of town served as the divider for this segregation, or as Lanita Akins called it: The American version of the Berlin Wall (Bissinger, 2015; pg. 99). The physical separation wasn t the only racial issue that Odessa had. Blacks and Hispanics were both quite underrepresented in Permian High, only making up about 31% of the student body (Bissinger, 2015; pg. 175). The black population of Odessa seemed to get the blunt end of the racial stigma though, which is especially seen at the beginning of chapter 5 with the use and explanation of why some Odessans used the word... These behaviors were seen both off and on the field and included extreme play against the opposing team, drinking, drug use, fighting, hubris, and institutional corruption (Bissinger, 2015 Coakley, 2015). Off field behavior included mainly drinking and getting into fights, though the citizens of Odessa even went as far as shooting a gun inside a bar at one point. The player s drinking had become bad enough that an anonymous letter frowning upon that behavior found its way into their lockers while they were in the playoffs (Bissinger, 2015; pgs. ... He announced this on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 and he is the latest Bush to advocate for a military campaign in the Middle East (Bobic). Ultimately, to accomplish this, he believes that we need to intensify our efforts in the air and on the ground (Bobic). The ground forces should consist of the United States, NATO, and Arab partners (Bobic). His announcement of this military action in the Middle East was due to the Paris terror attacks where at least 129 people died and hundreds more were injured by ISIS(Bobic). Lastly, Bush faulted President Obama and 2016 Democratic front runner Hillary Clinton for wanting to withdraw from the world, particularly at a time when terrorists are wreaking havoc across Europe (Bobic).... The album also spurred 8 top five hits, an accomplishment that has only happened to three albums beforehand. Perry s album, Teenage Dream, sold over 3 million copies and sold over 24 million singles. All these great accomplishments would lead anyone to think that Capitol, her record company, had to be rolling around in the dough. • 10. The Struggle Of Democratic Peace Although countries in South America are not democratic for most of the last century, it has the fewest inter state wars there, which can be explained by geopolitics with balance of power, the trade off between benefits and costs, and relations among countries in this area. According to the theory of Democratic Peace, since democratic leaders have a larger wining coalitions, in order to keep in office, they need to gain support from selectorate, and democratic leaders facing with war are more inclined to shift extra resources into the war effort than are autocrats . In addition to trying harder, democrats are more selective in their choice of targets and democrats only initiate wars they expect to win. As a generalization, it is an empirical law that democracies do not fight wars with one another . On the contrary, with a small winning coalition, non democrats leaders are facing less risk of being deposed than are their democratic counterparts , therefore, they are not constrained by the selectorate and they are inclined to choose war when the expected benefit is larger than the cost of conflict, or larger than the benefit from negotiation. This may lead to the conclusion that non democrats are more likely to have conflicts with other countries. However, when we look at South America, despite the differences between some of the continent s countries, it has not experienced full scale interstate warfare in over 80 years . This is puzzling, since the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This trend is expected to continue into 2014, with an expected growth of 1.4%. Major operators like Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts are expected to expand their menus in the five years to 2019 in order to increase sales and access higher profit margins. Both Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts plan on rolling out hundreds of new stores over the next five years, making up for lost ground they experienced during the recession. Dunkin , which is highly concentrated in the east, is aiming to expand westward to steal market share from local competitors. The major chains are also expected to invest more in international growth as part of a long term strategy, because many larger players view emerging economies as markets with huge potential for growth and long term profitability. • 16. Analysis Of Beauty When The Dancer Is The Self An unknown author from thethingswesay.com once said, Beauty is the opposite of perfection it s about confidence, charisma and character. For many people, women especially, this concept seems unrealistic. In the autobiography Beauty: When the dancer is the self by Alice Walker, she identifies with this perception of life and applies it to the societal views of beauty. Through her autobiography, she sets the stage by explaining her childhood, beginning with her sassy and independent nature as a two and a half year old. Proceeding several years later, she describes her pain from being shot in the eye by her brother and the cover up that altered their relationship. Next came the feelings of diffidence and timidity from the accident, that led to her physical and mental decline. Finally, the acceptance of past events, followed by, the ability to see the world in her eye (Walker 40) enables Walker to value herself and spread the message of self acceptance. Using the pain felt from that shot, both mental and physical, she is able to define a new chapter in her life and become an award winning novelist. By writing to a broad audience, she is able to make a greater impact as she delves into the process of taking pain and despair and transforming it into self celebration. In Walker s essay, she addresses this reoccurring theme by employing structural preferences, logical appeals and the use of imagery to cultivate a powerful message of personal growth. • 18. Racial Diversity In Media Racial Diversity is a sensitive topic, especially with all of the current controversy about race. One specific issue pertaining to this is the portrayal and representation of Asian people in media (i.e. television, movies, magazines, etc.). I hope to bring awareness to this controversial matter in a respectful and peaceful manner through in depth research. As an Asian American woman, I am extremely passionate about this issue because it hits home. I live in a society where there is not a lot of representation or people I can directly relate to in media. While watching TV shows and movies, I have noticed that all of the actors and actresses are predominantly Caucasian and when an Asian actoror actress is casted, he/she is cast as the supporting character or a villain. Growing up in an Asian household where you are taught to be proud of your heritage and watching these shows and movies was not something that made me want to have pride in my ancestry. It left me without a strong Asian Americanrole model in my childhood; someone I could aspire to be. People often assume that if a show or movie contains one racially diverse person, it should be considered diverse ; this assumption or viewpoint is completely absurd. This is further described as tokenism, the practice of making only a perfunctory or symbolic effort to do a particular thing, especially by recruiting a small number of people from underrepresented groups in order to give the appearance of sexual or racial equality ... Alcibiades upbringing conditioned him, one might say entitled him, to power and influence, and his self serving actions had the sole objectives of surpassing his predecessors and achieving glory. To understand the motivation of Alcibiades, we must look to his upbringing and character to examine his sense of entitlement. Alcibiades was born into an aristocratic Athenian family so he would have been pro oligarchy; he was the son of Cleinias (Thuc 5.43) who was slain at the battle of Coroneia (Plut. Alcibiades 1). After the death of his father, Alcibiades was placed under the guardianship of Pericles (Plut. Alcibiades 1), who was leader of the state and the most influential man of his day (Thuc 1.127). The connection that Alcibiades shared with Pericles, enabled him to enjoy the company of influential figures throughout Athens, and consequently; they desired him. It was said, many well born men were swarming around Alcibiades and seeking his company (Plut. Alcibiades 4), being held in such high regard by the elite would have boosted his sense of self importance, gained him influence and bring about great personal fame (Thu. 6.16). Therefore, conducting the university entrance exams is the most logical and impartial way to decide whom to pursue higher study. As we can see, in every aspect, people have to compete to get what fulfills their needs when there is insufficient source of supplies. In ancient eras, when people lived in caves, they fought for food when there was shortage of food. In modern history, big countries fought for colonies, which caused World War II. In other words, when everyone wants their needs to be met while there is shortage of supplies, they have to compete for it. None can be exempted from this fact. Similarly, in this case, every student wants to get admission when there are few available seats, they have to compete for those seats. It is logical. The third point is that the national university examination will encourage students to study. Thus, the qualification of admitted students will be enhanced. How could we be sure that those who admitted into universities are able to pursue their study? Specifically, I will take a look at how each country values child rearing and how they raise their children during childhood. I chose this topic because when I have children, I want to personally raise my children in the best way that I can. Looking into different cultures, such as the United Statesand China, will show me how children are raised and also the behavior of the children as a result of how they were raised. As mentioned in an article published in Scandinavian Journal of Psychology, individualism is valued in America, so we raise our children to exercise independence hoping they will one day be independent. However, Chinese culture does not value individual independence, so they raise their children to respect authority and are more controlling. Ultimately, the goal of parentingin any culture, as stated by the same article, is raise a child who becomes a creature of his/her culture (LUI, GUO, 2010). Child rearing is important in both countries because both want their culture to continue on for centuries. After researching how Americans and Chinese parents raise their children during childhood, it is evident that both countries have very different parenting practices; however, they both want to raise children who exemplify their own culture. In America, independence and the individual are valued the most. This ideology both reflects and influences the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

All of the colonies in the regions had to deal with religious problem, whether it be persecution or being removed from that colony. Some people had the religion/religious freedom they wanted. However, the Middle Colonies had a lot of religious toleration while the New England Colonies had very little toleration. Therefore some people did get the freedom they wanted, but it varied from where they lived and who they were. • 58. Reflection About Happiness When I was around nine years old I lived in California. It was nothing fancy; we lived in a standard house and I attended the elementary school I was zoned to. I was in the choir, too. The choir was, if my memory does not fail me, a combination of fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. That year the teacher had decided to use the song Happinessfrom the Broadway musical You re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. While it was not a very good rendition of the piece, it stayed with me throughout the years. For a long time I believed that happiness could be found in objects, in buying plastic things that I would throw away a year later. But the song s catchy and meaningful lyrics stayed in the back of my mind, providing me with a gentle reminder that my happiness did not necessarily have to come from owning things. Despite popular belief, happiness is not something that is bought. Happiness is not palpable. Up until a year ago, I believed that in order to be truly happy a person had to have massive amounts of money and materialistic products that did nothing to make them happy. Though that may be the case for some, I found that happiness is not often found in the amount of clothes a person has, or the price tag of their home or car. Happiness is not measured in dollars, or how many properties a person owns, or even how much their house is worth. Happiness, to me, is a feeling that is found in people, memories and moments. When I think of the word happy I see my grandparents house. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 59. The Fear Of Black Male Sexuality Marquise Akbar The Fear of Black Male Sexuality in Baldwin s Going To See The Man Schulman, Gary I. Race, Sex, and Violence: A Laboratory Test of the Sexual Threat of the Black Male Hypothesis. American Journal of Sociology 79.5 (1974): 1260. Web. The potential for white men to violently express attitudes of racism is studied to determine if the white male finds the Black male sexually threatening and, if so, does this threat incite the proclivity for the white male to act violently. Shulman studied 84 white, male, freshman and sophomore students at UC Santa Barbara. According to the study, The subjects are young, educated, white men from stable homes with no mental instability, whose values lean towards a liberal ideology. This experiment considers Koval s psychoanalytic interpretation of white racism, based largely on the Oedipus complex and Skolnick s belief that the conflict that fosters violent racism is a feeling of powerlessness and insecurity in whites. Schulman s focus is to prove that a much larger population is inclined to violent expressions of racism, and that this inclination is partially based on the perceived sexual threat of the Black male. The experiment contrives a conflict requiring the subjects to choose between cheating on a given task, which prevents the victims from being shocked, or not cheating, thus shocking the victim The victims in the test conditions are a white male, a white male known to be sexually involved with a Black female, a ...
