Edward Thorndike was an American psychologist known for his work on animal intelligence and learning through trial and error. He conducted experiments using puzzle boxes, where he observed cats learning to escape by pressing a button or pulling a string. Thorndike believed that learning is strengthened through positive reinforcement and weakened through lack of reinforcement, which he called his laws of effect and exercise. His theories focused on connectionism and the idea that learning forms associations between stimuli and responses.
