The Eternal Light synagogue in Southern Italy celebrated Passover. Jews in Southern Italy gathered for the traditional Passover seder to remember their ancestors' exodus from Egypt and journey toward freedom. The synagogue represents the first organized, rabbi-led synagogue to emerge in southern Italy in over 500 years. At the seder in Palermo and Platania, attendees remembered the difficulties Jews faced after being driven from cities during the Spanish Inquisition. The seder celebrated the revival of Judaism in Southern Italy with many learning prayers and rituals in hopes of keeping traditions alive.
This foreword discusses open access to scientific publications. It notes that sharing scientific knowledge efficiently is crucial for European research. While open access is debated, the European Commission has studied the scientific publishing market and believes new initiatives are needed to widen access to scientific information. EU member states have also called for enhancing national strategies and coordination regarding access, preservation and dissemination policies. The foreword acknowledges the complexity of the open access debate as stakeholders have differing views, but stresses the need for solutions that offer wide and rapid dissemination of research results while also providing fair compensation to scientific publishers. It welcomes a handbook that presents various perspectives on open access issues.

While the internet provides widespread access to information, rising costs are limiting access through university libraries. Open access is presented as one model for providing free public access to academic knowledge, but there are open issues around commercialization and how to structure the debate on a broad social level. The document was produced based on discussions at a workshop with 25 experts from different organizations to contribute to the open access discussion.
