NDB Cluster provides a low-latency database layer to enable these applications to serve data and state reliably across many nodes.

Ndb cluster 80_ycsb_mem
NDB Cluster 8.0 was benchmarked using YCSB, the de facto cloud benchmark. The benchmark showed that:
1) NDB Cluster achieved the highest throughput of any distributed in-memory transactional database, scaling linearly as data nodes were added.
2) Increasing the number of rows in the cluster from 300M to 600M rows showed no impact on performance or latency.
3) Performance was optimized for latency versus throughput by adjusting load generators and the number of data manager threads per data node.
Ndb cluster 80_ycsb_disk
The document summarizes a benchmark test of MySQL NDB Cluster 8.0 using the YCSB disk data benchmark. The test used two data nodes with 52-core Oracle Cloud DenseIO bare metal servers connected by 25GbE. It loaded over 600 million rows of data totaling 18 terabytes across six tablespaces on NVMe drives. The load phase loaded data at a rate of 1.25 gigabytes per second. The benchmark then performed a 50/50 read/write workload achieving a combined read and update throughput of 1 gigabyte per second each with CPU usage around 20%.

Scylla Summit 2016: Compose on Containing the Database
This document discusses how Compose applies containerization best practices to provide database services. It outlines the "Twelve Factors of Stateful Apps" that guide Compose's architecture. These include running databases and data in separate containers, using environment variables for configuration, scaling containers vertically before adding nodes, and collecting logs and metrics within the deployment. By applying these factors, Compose can reliably deploy a range of database technologies like MongoDB, PostgreSQL, and now ScyllaDB across its platform.
Ceph as storage for CloudStack
Ceph is an open source distributed object storage platform that can be used as storage for CloudStack. Ceph clusters can easily scale by adding more nodes without service interruptions and runs on commodity hardware, making it more cost effective than traditional storage systems. The RBD block device feature in Ceph allows virtual machine images to be stored as block devices striped across Ceph objects for use as primary storage in CloudStack. Functionality like live migration, snapshots, cloning and running system VMs from RBD-based storage is supported. Future plans include adding write caching for RBD and moving more logic from the CloudStack KVM agent into libvirt.

Update on Crimson - the Seastarized Ceph - Seastar Summit
The document summarizes updates to Ceph's Crimson storage system. Crimson uses Seastar, a library for high performance asynchronous programming, to improve the performance of Ceph's OSD (Object Storage Daemon). Specifically, Crimson avoids kernel overhead, eliminates unnecessary memory copies and context switches, and is optimized for modern storage devices. Scylla is capable of over 1.8 million operations per second per node with predictable low latencies. It uses an architecture with shard-per-core and reactor programming that avoids locks and threads for near-linear scaling. Scylla also has its own efficient unified cache and I/O scheduler that maximize throughput and allow it to outperform Cassandra on benchmarks by an order of magnitude. Scylla is fully compatible with Cassandra and aims to build an open source community around ongoing core database improvements.

GlusterFS is a distributed file system that shards and replicates files across multiple servers without a central metadata server. It uses modular "translators" to handle functions like replication and distribution. Some challenges GlusterFS faces include multi-tenancy, distributed quota management, efficient data rebalancing, reducing replication latency, optimizing directory traversal, and handling many small files. The speaker argues these challenges are not unique to GlusterFS and that incremental, modular improvements are preferable to monolithic solutions.
Scylla Summit 2018: Consensus in Eventually Consistent Databases
Eventually consistent databases choose to remain available under failure, allowing for conflicting data to be stored in different replicas (later repaired by background processes). Weakening the consistency guarantees improves not only availability, but also performance, as the number of replicas involved in a given operation can be minimized. There are, however, use-cases that require the opposite trade-off. Indeed, Apache Cassandra and Scylla provide Lightweight Transactions (LWT), which allow single-key linearizable updates. The mechanism underlying LWT is asynchronous consensus. In this talk, we'll describe the characteristics and requirements of Scylla's consensus implementation, and how it enables strongly consistent updates. We will also cover how consensus can be applied to other aspects of the system, such as schema changes, node membership, and range movements, in order to improve their reliability and safety. We will thus show that an eventually consistent database can leverage consensus without compromising either availability or performance.

Scylla is an open source reimplementation of Cassandra which performs up to 10X with drop in-replacement compatibility. At ScyllaDB, performance matters but even more importantly, stable performance under any circumstances.
A key factor for our consistent performance is our reliance on userspace schedulers. Scheduling in userspace allows the application, the database in our case to have better control on the different priorities each task has and to provide an SLA to selected operations. Scylla used to have an I/O scheduler and recently won a CPU scheduler.
At ScyllaDB, we make architectural decisions that provide not only low latencies but consistently low latencies at higher percentiles. This begins with our choice of language and key architectural decisions such as not using the Linux page-cache, and is fulfilled by autonomous database control, a set of algorithms, which guarantees that the system will adapt to changes in the workload. In the last year, we have made changes to Scylla that provide latencies that are consistent in every percentile. In this talk, Dor Laor will recap those changes and discuss what ScyllaDB is doing in the future.
Application Caching: The Hidden Microservice
1. Application caching is used heavily at Netflix to improve performance for many microservices and user experiences like the home page, video playback, and personalization.
2. EVCache is Netflix's custom key-value cache that is distributed, replicated across AWS regions and optimized for their use cases. It handles trillions of operations per day across thousands of servers.
3. Moneta is the next generation of EVCache, using SSD storage in addition to RAM to reduce costs by 70% while maintaining performance. It intelligently manages hot and cold data between storage types.

This document discusses performance improvements and optimizations for MySQL NDB Cluster 8.0 based on TPC-H benchmark results. Key points include:
- Using NVMe disks, SQL and disk data performance is now almost on par with memory.
- Various configuration optimizations are shown to improve TPC-H latency for queries, including collocating MySQL servers and data nodes, optimized spinning, and increasing logical data memory partitions.
- NDB parallel query architecture can scale query performance up to 12 logical data memory partitions for most TPC-H queries, with future work aimed at further optimizations.

Sharding: Past, Present and Future with Krutika Dhananjay
- Sharding is a client-side translator that splits files into equally sized chunks or shards to improve performance and utilization of storage resources. It sits above the distributed hash table (DHT) in Gluster.
- Sharding benefits virtual machine image storage by allowing data healing and replication at the shard level for better scalability. It also distributes load more evenly across bricks.
- For general purpose use, sharding aims to maximize parallelism during writes while maintaining consistency through atomic operations and locking frameworks. Key challenges include updating file metadata without locking and handling operations like truncates and appends correctly across shards.
Scylla Summit 2018: Scylla 3.0 and Beyond
Scylla 3.0 will include several new features and performance improvements including incremental compaction to reduce storage requirements, columnar storage to boost analytics performance, and multi-tenancy to fully isolate user workloads. It will also add lightweight transactions and improve analytics queries, large partition support, and observability tools. Underlying infrastructure changes involve optimizing Linux and Seastar for Scylla's needs.

This document discusses using Redis in a horizontally scaled data processing architecture. Redis is used to store data across multiple databases and is accessed through Twemproxy, which acts as a load balancer. Data is sharded across the Redis databases and Twemproxy ensures there is no single point of failure. Events and tasks are queued in Redis and processed asynchronously by microservices.

NewSQL - The Future of Databases?
NewSQL databases seek to provide the same scalable performance as NoSQL databases for online transaction processing workloads, while still maintaining the ACID guarantees of a traditional SQL database. NewSQL databases use new architectures like multi-version concurrency control and partition-level locking to allow for horizontal scaling and high availability without sacrificing consistency. They also provide highly optimized SQL engines to query data in a distributed environment.

"Efficient network messenger is critical for today’s scale-out storage systems. Ceph is one of the most popular distributed storage system providing a scalable and reliable object, block and file storage services. As the explosive growth of Big Data continues, there're strong demands leveraging Ceph build high performance & ultra-low latency storage solution in the cloud and bigdata environment. The traditional TCP/IP cannot satisfy this requirement, but Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) can.
"In this session, we'll present the challenges in today's distributed storage system posed by network messenger with the profiling results of Ceph All Flash Array system showing the networking already become the bottleneck and introduce how we achieved 8% performance benefit with Ethernet RDMA protocol iWARP. We'll first present the design of integrating iWARP to Ceph networking module together with performance characterization results with iWARP enabled IO intensive workload. The send part, we will explore the proof-of-concept solution of Ceph on NVMe over iWARP to build high-performance and high-density storage solution. Finally, we will showcase how these solutions can improve OSD scalability, and what’s the next optimization opportunities based on current analysis."

Sharding: Past, Present and Future with Krutika Dhananjay
- Sharding is a client-side translator that splits files into equally sized chunks or shards to improve performance and utilization of storage resources. It sits above the distributed hash table (DHT) in Gluster.
- Sharding benefits virtual machine image storage by allowing data healing and replication at the shard level for better scalability. It also distributes load more evenly across bricks.
- For general purpose use, sharding aims to maximize parallelism during writes while maintaining consistency through atomic operations and locking frameworks. Key challenges include updating file metadata without locking and handling operations like truncates and appends correctly across shards.
Scylla Summit 2018: Scylla 3.0 and Beyond
Scylla 3.0 will include several new features and performance improvements including incremental compaction to reduce storage requirements, columnar storage to boost analytics performance, and multi-tenancy to fully isolate user workloads. It will also add lightweight transactions and improve analytics queries, large partition support, and observability tools. Underlying infrastructure changes involve optimizing Linux and Seastar for Scylla's needs.
Redis for horizontally scaled data processing at jFrog bintray
This document discusses using Redis in a horizontally scaled data processing architecture. Redis is used to store data across multiple databases and is accessed through Twemproxy, which acts as a load balancer. Data is sharded across the Redis databases and Twemproxy ensures there is no single point of failure. Events and tasks are queued in Redis and processed asynchronously by microservices.

NewSQL - The Future of Databases?
NewSQL databases seek to provide the same scalable performance as NoSQL databases for online transaction processing workloads, while still maintaining the ACID guarantees of a traditional SQL database. NewSQL databases use new architectures like multi-version concurrency control and partition-level locking to allow for horizontal scaling and high availability without sacrificing consistency. They also provide highly optimized SQL engines to query data in a distributed environment.

"Efficient network messenger is critical for today’s scale-out storage systems. Ceph is one of the most popular distributed storage system providing a scalable and reliable object, block and file storage services. As the explosive growth of Big Data continues, there're strong demands leveraging Ceph build high performance & ultra-low latency storage solution in the cloud and bigdata environment. The traditional TCP/IP cannot satisfy this requirement, but Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) can.
"In this session, we'll present the challenges in today's distributed storage system posed by network messenger with the profiling results of Ceph All Flash Array system showing the networking already become the bottleneck and introduce how we achieved 8% performance benefit with Ethernet RDMA protocol iWARP. We'll first present the design of integrating iWARP to Ceph networking module together with performance characterization results with iWARP enabled IO intensive workload. The send part, we will explore the proof-of-concept solution of Ceph on NVMe over iWARP to build high-performance and high-density storage solution. Finally, we will showcase how these solutions can improve OSD scalability, and what’s the next optimization opportunities based on current analysis."
