Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

tionnelles, dénichées partout dans le monde et
acclimatées dans les cinq hectares de serres et
tunnels.Ainsi,ons’enfoncedanslaforêtdel’ère
primaire,leroyaumedesfougèresarborescentes.
Ces plantes spectacu-
lairesdeclimathumide,
cultivées depuis long-
temps par les Anglais,
étaient recherchées par
les clients bretons ainsi
que par le parc Terra
Botanica, à Angers (49),
alors en phase de créa-
tion. Vendues prêtes
à planter, en tronçons sans racines de l’autre
côté de la Manche, il fallait trouver une solu-
tionpourleclimatfrançais,plusfroid.En2008,
Benoît et Damien importent donc directement
d’Australie les billes de bois avec un œil ter-
minal. Ils les mettent à s’enraciner, à partir du
mois d’avril, pour 12 à 18 mois de culture, ce
qui permet aux frondes de se développer. Les
Dicksonias antarctica sont maintenant toutes
cultivées de cette façon pour offrir des plantes
acclimatées,résistantesjusqu’à- 10 °Cetimmé-
tera plus et ce ne sont pas ses collègues italiens
qui l’en dissuaderont. Pas plus que ses enfants,
dont trois attraperont le virus du végétal, parmi
lesquels Benoît et Damien, actuels dirigeants
de l’entreprise. D’ailleurs, ce dernier revient du
Japon en 2001 avec la technique des bonsaïs de
jardin, le niwaki. Ce savoir-faire, complémen-
taire à l’art de la taille, consiste à donner une
forme particulière aux arbres en disciplinant
leurs branches avec de petites baguettes de
bois et de la ficelle. Il est surtout utilisé pour les
formes en plateaux. Ainsi travaillés, les Taxus
et autres espèces sont devenues des plantes à
haute valeur ajoutée. Cultivées depuis quatre
ans dans un sol myco-
rhizé, elles sont com-
mercialisées au bout
de cinq à dix ans. Dif-
férents stades de déve-
loppement permettent
de répondre à tous les
budgets : les Taxus bac-
cata ou les Pinus pen-
taphylla démarrent à
300 euros pour les plus petits en 1,25 mètre par
exemple. Pour les produits fleuris, de plus en
plusdemandés,ilexisteentreautresdesOsman-
thusburkwoodiitaillésenformedel’Atomiumde
Bruxelles,ouencoredesCamelliasasanqua.Plus
loin, entre deux serres, on trouve des sujets en
conteneur : des chênes-lièges venus d’Espagne,
des IlexcrenataimportésduJaponouencoreun
cèdreduLibandestinéàuneterrasseparisienne.
Aujourd’hui, avec cinq salariés formés, l’entre-
prise produit un millier de topiaires et de bon-

taine de variétés d’Acer palmatum à associer
aux bonsaïs de jardin, deuxième meilleure
vente du site web. Ensuite, ce sont les fougères
arborescentes et les autres végétaux à « effet
immédiat » qui s’écoulent régulièrement. Des
plantes de quatre ou cinq ans d’âge, en contai-
ners de 3 ou 4 l. Une offre encore peu présente
sur le web. Toutes les ventes en ligne représen-
tent 2 % du chiffre d’affaires global consolidé
des établissements Ripaud. n

reproduire les ambiances de leurs voyages, à
ces géantes venues du fond des âges, s’ajoute
la production de palmiers, Chamaerops humilis,
Phoenix, Trachycarpus etc. Beaucoup sont plan-
tés penchés, voire couchés, le long des allées
du domaine, comme s’ils voulaient rejoindre la
mer aux eaux turquoise de quelques îles tropi-
cales ou de la côte d’Azur.
> Des ventes de plus en plus décalées vers le
printemps. Et, bien entendu, pas de paysages
méditerranéens sans oliviers. Importés d’Es-
pagne, de nombreux sujets sont disponibles,
dont certains âgés de plus de cinq cents ans. À
la question de leur taille en nuages, très « ten-
dance »depuisquelquesannées,BenoîtRipaud
prévient : « C’est une demande des clients mais
nouslesmettonsengarde,lorsqu’ilssonttaillés,
les oliviers gèlent dans nos régions. »
Pour compléter son offre, l’entreprise propose
aussi des productions saisonnières : Gaura,
agapanthes, sauges, lavandes et autres espèces.
Elles sont cultivées par séries dans des serres
équipées de tapis roulants avec les rempo-
teuses à l’extérieur. Les pots, achetés à un pro-
ducteurlocal,sontrecyclables,généralementde
la couleur des fleurs pour mettre en valeur les
plantes et paillés de chanvre. « Le sol en maté-
riau enrobé dispense de chauffage, il conserve
la chaleur du soleil, suffisante même par - 12 °C
en sortie de nuit. Les jeunes plants, pour les
besoins internes, sont produits ici aussi. Car
les ventes se font de plus en plus au printemps,
sur des produits tirant sur l’horticole. Nous
ne savons jamais ce que nous allons vendre
dans deux mois, nous devons être prêts », pré-
cise,enhommeavisé,BenoîtRipaud.Uneévolu-
tion du métier de pépiniériste, du reste, consta-
tée par nombre de ses confrères.
> Le zen et le web. Toutes ces gammes se
retrouvent dans le point de vente ouvert aux
particuliers, non loin du site de production de
la Tardière, dans le bourg même de Cheffois et
sur Internet. Les pépinières Ripaud sont par-
tenaires des sites de Promesses de fleurs et de
Willemse et ont ouvert, en 2012, leur propre
boutique web, maintenant animée par Aman-
dine Ripaud, la fille de Benoît. Aujourd’hui
fréquentée quotidiennement par deux cents
visiteurs uniques, en majorité situés en région
parisienne, Planete-pepinieres.fr satisfait une
clientèle très différente de celle des jardineries,
àlarecherchedesujetsuniques,debellespièces
et de raretés botaniques. D’ailleurs, la mise en
ligne des spécimens exceptionnels a débuté à
l’automne dernier et se poursuit depuis. Ainsi,
lespaysagistespeuventlesproposerdirectement
à leurs clients, tout est transparent avec un prix
deventepublicsurlequelseracalculéelaremise
professionnelle et l’assurance d’une livraison
maîtrisée par le producteur.
En tête des ventes, on trouve la collection
d’érables japonais, très tendance pour les jar-
dins « zen ». En effet, la « zénitude » revient
en force ! Partenaire depuis cinq ans du parc
oriental de Maulévrier, près de Cholet (49), le
plus grand jardin de type japonais d’Europe sur
