o information literacy -> very broad concept
o a lot of definitions -> in 15-year span, between two important documents from
American Library Associations (Information Literacy Competency Standards for
Higher Education, 2000. & Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education,
2016) 126 definitions can be found in the literature (Sample, 2020)
o WoSCC -> a phrase information literacy -> Web of Science Category Information
Science Library Science -> 4,721 papers
o “…practical and strategic concept guiding the library field's efforts in teaching
information seeking and using skills“ (Tuominen et al., 2005)
*does not include concepts of evaluation of information, ethical handling of information etc.
o for the purposes of this presentation - we will simplify and limit it -> question:
How librarians at Faculty of Science educate their users through
lectures / workshops / seminars / events / programs / group /
instructions / courses? What topics are covered?
Courses for graduate students
level :: 3rd or 4th year of study
modul :: lecture+seminar+exercise
frequency :: once a year
organization :: within the core curriculum - part of professional courses or
general science courses
Education for scholars
modul :: seminar / webinar / short lecture
frequency :: when needed
Topics Content
TURNITIN - Similarity detection service (Plagiarism
Checker) workshop
- detailed instructions in form of seminar or webinar
Current events and changes in the world of scientific
publishing and scientific communication
– short presentations to inform scholars!
- part of informal meeting of scientists – presentation & discussion
- e. g. in March 2023 Clarivate announced the exclusion of 82 journals from the
Web of Science Core Collection
plans for the future
- copyright issues workshop for graduate students
- introductory lectures for freshmen students
The Faculty of Science “is still learning” - we have plans and are looking for the best
solutions and structures for the education of our users.. we still have a lot of work to do!
Inspiration and ideas - our colleagues librarians from the University of Zagreb!
Many libraries at the University of Zagreb have respectable student education
programs, some are even integrated into the university curriculum.
How librarians at the best universities in the world educate their users
through lectures / workshops / seminars / events / programs / group
/ instructions / courses? What topics are covered?
