3. WHAT IS GREEN COMPUTING?
Green computing or green IT, refers to environmentally sustainable computing or IT.
It imparts minimal or no impact on the environment.
To reduce the use of hazardous materials, maximize energy efficiency during product’s
lifetime.
It use the computer in a eco-friendly manner.

5. HOW TECHNOLAGIES HARM ENVIRONMENT?
Cost of Spam
– 62 trillion spam messages in 2020.
– 0.3 grams of carbon dioxide (CO2) per message.
– annual spam energy use 33 terawatt hours.
– equivalent to the electricity used in 2.4 million homes every year.
The CO2 dissipated from ‘sleeping’ devices = 1/7th the CO2 emitted by an automobile.

6. By electronic appliances.
Desktop requires 85 watts just to idle(Monitor off).
Left on 24 hrs/day-1,500 pounds of CO2 per year.
A tree absorbs between 3 and 15 pounds of CO2 each year.(up
to 500 trees)
Hazardous materials inside computers.
These contain – Cadmium - damage kidneys
– Mercury - neurological damage
– Lead - disrupt brain neurotransmitter

7. Environmental Impact: Green computing aims to reduce the environmental impact of
technology.
Energy Efficiency: Energy-efficient technologies and practices reduce the power consumption
of computers and data centers.
Resource Conservation: Green computing encourages the responsible use of resources.
Longevity of Technology: Sustainable computing encourages the development of longer-
lasting, upgradable devices.
SIGNIFICANCE OF GREEN COMPUTING

8. Renewable Energy Integration: Using renewable energy sources like solar and wind power
to run data centers and devices is a crucial aspect of green computing.
Reduced Heat Emission: Energy-efficient computing components generate less heat.
Regulatory Compliance: Governments and regulatory bodies are increasingly imposing
energy efficiency and environmental standards on the technology industry.
Cost Savings: Green computing practices often lead to cost savings in terms of energy bills
and reduced maintenance costs.

Climate Change :
First and foremost, conclusive research shows that CO2 and other emissions are causing global
climate and environmental damage.
Preserving the planet is a valid goal because it aims to preserve life. Planets like ours, that
supports life, are very rare.

Savings :
Green computing can lead to serious cost savings overtime.
Reductions in energy costs from servers, cooling, and lighting are generating serious
savings for many corporations.
Maximize energy efficiency during the product’s lifetime.
Promote the recyclability or biodegradability of defunct products and factory waste.

Reliability of Power :
As energy demands in the world go up, energy supply is declining
or flat.
Energy efficient systems helps ensure healthy power systems.

Materials Recycling :
Parts from outdated systems may be salvaged and recycled through certain retail outlets and
municipal or private recycling.
Many organizations, including some manufacturers themselves, are willing to take equipment
back and recycle the components into new products.

14. METHODOLOGIES OF GREEN COMPUTING:
Virtualization :
Computer virtualization is the process of running two or more
logical computer systems on one set of physical hardware.
Telecommuting :
Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions related to travel and
increased profit margins.
Increased worker satisfaction.

15. Power Management :
ACPI allows an operating system to directly control the power saving aspects of its underlying
hardware.
Prolong battery life for portable and embedded systems.
Reduce cooling requirements.
Reduce noise.
Reduce operating costs for energy and cooling.

17. MODULE 1.
Physical Hardware Services Environment
Energy-Efficient Components: Use low-power hardware components, such as processors,
memory, and storage devices, to reduce energy consumption.
Optimized Cooling: Implement efficient cooling solutions, like liquid cooling or hot/cold
aisle containment, to reduce the energy required for temperature control.
Virtualization: Utilize server and storage virtualization to consolidate physical resources,
reducing the number of servers and associated energy usage.
Renewable Energy: Consider using renewable energy sources to power hardware, such as
solar panels or wind turbines for data centers.

18. Power Management:
- CPU Power Management
- Device Power Management
Resource Allocation:
-Task Scheduling
-Memory Management
I/O Operations:
-Disk Spin-down
-Network Management

19. Energy-Efficient Software: Develop and use applications that are optimized for energy
efficiency.
User Education: Educate users and developers about energy-efficient coding practices and the
importance of minimizing unnecessary resource consumption.
Cloud-Native Applications: Design applications that can take advantage of cloud computing's
scalability.
Monitoring and Optimization: Implement application performance monitoring to identify
resource-intensive processes and optimize them for energy efficiency.

20. Zonbu Computer :
Energy efficient PC.
Consumes just 1/3 of the power of a typical light bulb.
The device runs the Linux operating system using a 1.2 GHz processor and 512 MB of RAM.
Fit-PC is designed to fit where a standard PC is too bulky, noisy and power hungry .
Fit-PC draws only 5 Watts, consuming in a day.
Less power than a traditional PC consumes in 1 hour.
Sun Ray thin Client :
Thin clients like the Sun Ray consume far less electricity than conventional desktops.
A Sun Ray on a desktop consumes 4 to 8 watts of power, because most of the heavy
computation is performed by a server.
Suited for cost-sensitive environments.
APPLICATIONS OF GREEN COMPUTING
01-04-2024
20
21. 1.Steps by Apple
MacBook keyboards are made from one single piece of aluminum
MacBook pro notebooks have long lasting batteries where as a normal
notebook uses three batteries
A MacBook will only use one through out its life time.
2.Steps by DELL
Their free world-wide product recycling program allows user to
properly dispose their product safely.
Their “Plant a tree for me” project can offset a customers carbon
emissions for only three dollars.

22. FUTURE OF GREEN COMPUTING
The plan towards green IT should include new electronic products and services with optimum
efficiency and all possible options towards energy savings.
That is enterprise wise companies are laying emphasis on moving towards eco friendly
components in computers.
ADVANTAGES
Energy saving.
Environmentally Friendly.
Cost-effective.
Save more money per year.
Can give you a tax right off. 01-04-2024

23. CONCLUSION
So far, consumers haven’t cared about ecological impact when buying computers, they’ve
cared only about speed and price .
Green computing can lead to a lot of energy savings, reduction in emission of co2 & CFC’s
which leads to environment protection.
It also leads to serious cost savings overtime.
The features of a green computer of tomorrow would be like :
• Efficiency in manufacturing and materials.
• Recyclability.
• Server model.
• Self-powering.
