Proliferation of Social Flaws in World of Warcraft
Proliferation of Social Flaws in World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft is the one of the most popular MMOG in the world, produced by Blizzard
entertainment. It has over 11 million players around the world 2.5 million of them in the US. The
game is one of the most dominant games in the global market today, which is available in 7 languages
and played in all continents, North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia, including South Korea,
China, Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau. Despite many scholars believe that the virtual worlds are
always in some basic way the expression of utopian desire (Monson). WoW is far from a perfect
world. In addition to the ethnic discrimination I ve read about in the reading this semester by Lisa
Nakamura, I also realized it involves extreme stereotypes.
The WoW is set in a high fantasy world where players are able to select race based avatars races (orcs
and dwarves) and classes (mage, warrior, priest). They are under the imaginary world of Azeroth
where they find themselves in the midst of an ongoing battle between two warring factions, the
Alliance and the Horde. Players kill monsters and complete quests in order to gain experience and
gears . They can also learn professions such as cooking, fishing, and blacksmithing, which enable
them to craft items like real world human beings (Mccreery). While this might seem to be like Plato s
Republic, in fact, it still involves extreme stereotypes, due to its euro centrism and embedded

Fruit In Christina Rossetti s Goblin Market
Fruit as a Vessel in the Goblin Market
Christina Rossetti s poem, Goblin Market, centers around two sisters, Lizzie and Laura, who become
entangled in the schemes of fruit selling goblin men. The goblins attempt to soil the women s purity
with delectable treats, but fail as a result of the strong will and love of the sisters. One could assume
that the fruit, which causes premature death and loss of passion in anyone who eats it, would be the
focal point of interpretation; it is the forbidden fruit that calls to sinners and causes a fall from grace,
or the manifestation of forbidden sexuality in a conservative period. However, this interpretation fails
to see beyond the obvious and lacks depth when considering all of the Goblin Market s ... Show more

Laura and Lizzie are very much opposites, or more so complementaries, as deduced by their close
relationship and polar personalities. Laura looks and listens, which puts her at risk of the goblins,
while Lizzie physically shuts her eyes and ears as to not fall victim to the goblin cry. In this way, the
goblins are able to appeal to Laura by singing a very descriptive and decadent song about all their
eccentric fruit. The song is meant to be an advertisement that Laura cannot resist because her nature is
to be curious, and she relies on her hearing and sight to feed her decisions. This is a key element to the
poem, that Laura heavily relies on her senses while Lizzie does not, following that Lizzie could run

Sarah Jewett s White Heron
Thesis Sarah made it clear in the story that Sylvie and her grandmother needed the ten dollars. Sylvie
the main character wanted to make the young man happy also. Sylvie dreamed about what her
grandmother and she would do with the ten dollars. Sylvie awakens one morning with the idea she
would find the White Heron. Once she found the White Heron she realized the bird s life is more
important than the ten dollars. I believe the author Sarah Jewett, wanted everyone to realize sometimes
the wants and needs of someone else s outweighs your own. Evaluation The story The White Heron,
Sarah Jewett narrates the story by using third person. I believe in this Sarah uses imagery when she
described what Sylvie saw and heard in the forest. For example,

Karl Marx s Class Conflict Theory
Karl Marx s Class Conflict Theory
Introduction
Karl Marx believed that struggle or conflict among classes was an inevitable feature of capitalism
based on the argument that various groups in a society or social classes perpetually fight and compete
for resources and power, hence the groups remains polarized against each other. The Karl Marx s
conflict theory views behavior from the perspective of conflict or tension among two or more groups.
The conflict does not necessarily translate to violence but rather takes the form of struggle within
political negotiations, business, philosophical ideologies or personal attitudes. A critical analysis of
Karl Marx conflict theory s point of view reveals that the conflict of social classes is the major aspect
of societal conflict, and is mostly propagated by the differences in economic statuses and inequalities
in distribution.
Human societies have been class based in some way and the class factor has been the most basic
dividing or differentiating factor between broad social groups. In the economic sphere that Marx s
theory focuses on, there is a class that own and control means of economic production which could be
referred to as the upper class, and there is the class that maybe own nothing, but their ability to sell
their labor power in return for wages which could be referred to as the middle or low class. From that
understanding, and based on the conflict theory, one might argue that unequal distribution of resources
and access

Relationship Between Language And Symbol
The definition of a symbol according to Merriam Webster Dictionary is something that stands for
something else by reason of relationship or association; and can either be letters, pictures, an action,
object or event. Symbols are not restricted to pictures or objects, but can include gestures as well as
words. Symbol use is necessarily not just for infants, but adults as well and is crucial to the way
humans think. Not only does something such as a map serve as a symbol but words such as wedding
ring can also be seen as a symbol. Therefore, it is clear that language and symbols go hand in hand.
The question that arises then is the affect of these two on learning in young children. Many studies
have been conducted studying the relationship and affect between language and symbol use in infants.
It is understood that linguistic and symbolic abilities overlap , but language is far more complex than
learning symbols. (Namy, Waxman, 1998) When infants are first learning words, they connect the
words they re being exposed to, to the objects around them. Therefore, early word acquisition focuses
on the symbolic nature of words. (Namy, Waxman, 1998) This study more specifically focuses on how
infants distinguish between words and other symbols and how this relationship changes with
development. A more recent study proposed that, early word acquisition is a function of a general
symbolic ability, suggesting that infants learn words and symbols with the same ability at the

The I Set Out On A Road Trip
racy and I set out on a road trip to Santa Barbara to do a little site seeing and have some lunch. Having
left late, we were met by huge crowds and no parking. Wanting to enjoy some time away from home,
we decided to continue up the coast and go to Solvang. As we approached Solvang, we saw the sign
for Sunstone Winery. Having seen pictures and hearing about their cave, it didn t take much to
convince us to stop and see what they had to offer. Driving up and walking through a vine covered
archway, you are greeted by a French style Courtyards and a picnic ground where people are sitting
around enjoying the outdoors with a glass of wine. To the right of the vine covered archway is a
beautiful tasting room also reflecting the French motif. Across the courtyard are two large wooden
doors on a stone masonry structure that is built into the side of the hill. This is the location of their
barrel aging cave and is frequently used for special events by club members. Walking into the tasting
room we were warmly greeted by the staff of Sunstone. As we approached the bar, Jonathan Flores
introduced himself and asked if we would like to taste their wines. Who could refuse. Sunstone has 2
different tasting flights from which to select. They have the Classic List and the Reserve List to
choose from. Sunstone s primary emphasis is on Rhone and Bordeaux with red varietals being their
primary focus but they do have a very nice selection of white wines. Johnathan began to

Comparison Of Socrates And The Ox-Bow Incident
The book The Trial and Death of Socrates and the movie The Ox Bow Incident were stories that
resulted in the death of the innocent. In The Trial and Death of Socrates, Socrates is sentenced to death
on the charge of corrupting the youth by a democratic trial. This took place in 399 BC in Athens. This
is an account of the philosopher s death written by his student, Plato. In The Ox Bow Incident, three
men are hanged by a mob for the murder of a man. The story takes place in the American West during
the 1940s. The film was directed by William A. Wellman. In both these tragedies there is an unfair
judgement by a mob, the innocent failing to persuade their accusers of their innocence, and the force
of peer pressure. The biggest similarity between the Ox bow three and Socrates is that ... Show more

Socrates was poisoned and the others were hanged. This wasn t the result of poor persuasion, but their
efforts did both fail. The men failed because the mob didn t want to consider that the men could
possibly be innocent. The majority of both mobs refused to look over any evidence that proved the
men were not guilty. Socrates was a known trouble maker, but he did not hurt anyone. The worst
Socrates did was annoy the officials, and this resulted in the ending of his life. He stood up in front of
the crowd and explained exactly why he shouldn t receive the death penalty, but the majority of them
did not pay attention to his reasoning. Ignoring the evidence was easier at Ox Bow. There was
evidence against them. They had the man s gun, the man s cattle with no bill of sell, a motive of cow
rustling, and they didn t have an alibi. With all this evidence, it was extremely easy to overlook the
fact that they didn t know that the man was dead. They acted on the words of someone who thought he
had heard someone say that the man had been murdered in a ditch. The messenger had probably heard
that the man had been shot and assumed that meant he was

Insanity And The Insanity Defense
The purpose of this essay is to explain why the insanity plea, or the insanity defense as it is also
known, is not a legitimate defense for any type of crime. The insanity defense has been around for a
number of years but does it make a mockery of the legal system? While many people have used the
insanity defense, it loses more times than it wins. This defense is used when someone believes they
did not know right from wrong while committing the crime. The problem with this is that it is hard to
know someone s mental state when there is not much evidence to go on. Someone can become
mentally ill after a crime or someone may have been mentally ill before a crime. Neither one of these
issues always weigh on the actual crime. A large ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While it is important to note that there are certain behaviors that are found to be common when
someone is depressed, depression does not facilitate itself the same way in all people. The National
Institute of Mental Health (n.d.) tells us, People with depressive illnesses do not all experience the
same symptoms. The severity, frequency, and duration of symptoms vary depending on the individual
and his or her particular illness. Understanding that there are so many different interpretations of the
word insanity, it could be argued that knowing the difference between right and wrong is not always
clear. The following syllogistic formula can be considered when thinking about this topic:
Major Premise: All people who plead insanity are admitting to a mental disease or defect.
Minor Premise: If a person has a mental disease or defect, it does not mean that he/she cannot tell
right from wrong.
Conclusion: If a person uses an insanity defense, it does not mean that he/she did not know right from
wrong while committing the crime.
Brannigan (2005) tells the story of Andrea Pia Yates. Ms. Yates was a mother of five children all under
the age of seven. While Ms. Yates was depressed, her own claim, she drowned each child one at a time
in the bathtub of their home on March 13, 2002. She admitted to killing all of the children, but she
claimed that she was not guilty by reason of insanity. She was found guilty and is now

The Digital Divide In The United States
Outline, Digital Divide
According to Mary H, digital divide is not only the gap between people who have access to
technology and those who do not, it is also the inequality in the kind of access. Though most
Americans access the technology, the difference in the quality of access remains. Yet the Constitution
guarantees the equality of opportunity, the digital divide subsists in the USA because there is
economic disparity among people. Therefore, some social class does not earn the advantages of
technology and the gap between upper class and lower class will grow up.

The Theater Of The Absurd
The theatre of the absurd is a term formulated by Martin Esslin during the 1950s and 1960s.
Essentially, it is derived from Albert Camus, the French author, in his Myth of Sisyphus. The origins
of the absurd theatre are in the hard experiments in the art during the 1920s and 1930s. The absurd
drama is not determined to solve any problem on the modern stage. Absurd drama excludes language
as a resource for communication. Language has become meaningless exchanges. In fact, it fails to
reflect the importance of human experience; it is restricted to the surface meaning and never
penetrates beyond its depth. The language which is used in absurd drama is specifically
conventionalized speech, clichés and slogans that have become very common to many writers.
The critics conclude that life is basically meaningless and, later, miserable, with no hope because of
the unavoidable futility of man s exertions. In these dramas, realism is intolerable, so there are
illusions. There is no discernible plot. Conversations are repeated. In these dramas, there is no certain
purpose or reason because it does not solve any problem. The main theme in absurd drama is a failure
of communication and the mingling of comic and serious elements. Also, theatre of the absurd appears
to react broadly against the impact of religion and its dimension in contemporary life. In other words,
we can say that it is an attempt to restore the necessity of myth and ritual in the modern age, by
making the individual

that it is evident that Arnold Palmer Hospital is attempting to acquire capacity to stay ahead of

Thomas Alva Edison s Impact On Society
Thomas Alva Edison s many inventions have tremendously impacted the way Americans live and
work. One of his most astounding invention was the incandescent light bulb. Edison started working
on it in 1878 and thought it necessary to have a significantly more convenient, and affordable light
than what was in the market in the 1800 s. He made his light bulb out off a durable incandescent
material that was far more convenient for homes and small areas than the other light bulb s in the

Examples Of New Historicism In Othello
New Historicism
When I did research on New Historicism I found that it is seen as is a school of literary theory and that
it was first developed in the 1980 s. Also when I looked for a definition for New Historicism I found
that it is seen as an expressive act that is embedded into a network that consists of material practices.
When we want to look for New Historicism in a novel or in a movie it is important to first have a look
at the author s biography as well as the social background and it is lastly important to look at the ideas
that was circulating the cultural era of that time as well.
New Historicism is also concerned with the political function of the literature as well as the concept of
power. In other words how they emerge, but it will tell us about the different ways of thinking at that
time.
In other words New Historicism is a literary theory that is based on the idea that literature should be
studied and interpreted within the context of both the history of the author and the history of the critic.
New Historicism is also often emphasized as the power struggle of all kinds, and that also includes the
power struggle in literary texts.

The Rise Of The Crusades
The crusades was a very important thing in history that not only affected the Western era, but the
entire world. The crusades can be the event that is accredited with the way that society looks at holy
wars or wars of religion. Reasons for the crusades are the threat that the Turks presented to Christian
territories, massive spread of Christianity, and for pilgrimage (completing God s will).
The Turks presented a huge threat to Christians. Muslims were set out on conquest of Christian
territories. Although the Byzantium s were able to hold on important regions Greece and Asia Minor
the Turks did capture much of Byzantium land. To add to all of this the Turks destroyed some
churches ... and seized pilgrims. (page 6) Of coarse the Byzantium was not okay with this. Pope
Gregory VII made plans early in 1074 to ride up against the Turks. He saw the Byzantium invasions as
the perfect opportunity to employ Europe s warriors in the service of God. (page 6)
The spread of Christianity can partly be credited to Pope Urban II. Pope Urban II lifelong goals was to
reform the Catholic Church. In 1095 Alexius I Comenus was in battle with the Turks and requested aid
to help him defeat them. This request was just what Pope urban II needed so that he could follow his
goal. Pope Urban II created the Council of Clermont on November 27, 1095. He called that the
Christians stand up and fight together for the freedom of other Christians. Pope Urban II said, The

Environmentalism in Watership Down by Richard Adams Essay
The small group of rabbits that left their original warren, Sandleford, to find a new home often uses
their little spare time to listen to stories generally told by Dandelion. These stories are often about the
Thousand Enemies and how they are a threat to the rabbits, especially El ahrairah. Humans are
presented as one of the Thousand. The author of the book, Richard Adams, displays man in a negative
way because of this. Man is portrayed as violent, nonsensical, and abusive to the natural way of life.
In the book, Watership Down, Richard Adams portrays the life and style of man in a negative way.

Humans are associated with a senseless and violent view of the world and life in general which leads
to both a horrible life and death of creatures of the wild ( Literature in Brief Information about
Watership Down. ). The machines the rabbits encounter are very much a threat to their well being. The
cars they come across are very unnatural to the rabbits being faster than a rabbit, and don t notice a
rabbit at all ( Literature in Brief Information about Watership Down. ). The violence of a machine such
as a car is underestimated until the group comes across the dead yona, a hedgehog overrun by a
vehicle (Adams 49). Adams emphasizes the violence of the deed by describing the creature as a
flattened, bloody mass of brown prickles and white fur, with small black feet and snout crushed round
the edges. The flies crawled upon it, and here and there the sharp point of gravel pressed up through
the flesh (Adams 49). The rabbits do not see a point in such a violent act, for an animal like a yona
cannot do much more than threaten slugs and beetles, and nothing would eat a yona either. Although
Efrafa seems like a totally evil place, the reason for such evilness lies in the treatment of humans. The
whole purpose of keeping Efrafa under total control was to keep humans from finding out about it and
causing the white blindness (Adams 233).Yes, the whole government system of the warren went to the
extreme and took over,

Tale Of Two Cities Injustice
A Tale Of Two Cities
A Tale Of Two Cities was during the French Revolution. It was a time of disorder and also an
outstanding period. It was the time of fear, of lots of violence, robberies, and blood all over the streets.
It was the time of joy and happiness. It was the time of injustice throughout society. A time of great
change throughout society. The book A Tale Of Two City has majors theme throughout the book. One
major theme is metaphorically resurrected from death and having a second chance at life. Another
major theme throughout the book is how society was injustice and corrupted.
Resurrection from death is coming back to live figuratively. Throughout the book more than one
characters are being resurrected from death. A main person is Dr.Manette. Manette was imprisoned for
eighteen years in the Bastile unjustly. Manette was figuratively dead. Manette spent his time in prison

Sacrifice In Brave New World
In Aldous Huxley s, Brave New World, the focus is constantly on the question of whether or not the
advance of technology requires a sacrifice of human individuality, religion, love, and many other
aspects of life. Therefore, Aldous Huxley s theme is that the price of happiness and social stability will
be the sacrifice of the most cherished possessions of our culture. In the novel, Mustapha Mond states
that God isn t compatible with machinery and scientific medicine, and universal happiness. (Huxley).
Here Huxley shows how religion can be sacrificed for peace. This world he has created with his novel
shows religion is no longer needed to satisfy human desires. Unfortunately sacrificing and eliminating
these aspects of life causes citizens ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is usually used to describe art inaccessible to the lower class. Although this term is subjective and
depends on one s perspective of art (Reference). Arts, science, religion, history, and individual love
are all things that have so much meaning and should be free to explore. Nevertheless, all of these
things, these high arts, that make us individuals and unique must be sacrificed to create peace and
stability. Huxley believes that these are the cost of stability, and that one must sacrifice a lot to be truly
happy. Another example of sacrifice in literature can be seen in the novel Macbeth by William
Shakespeare. There are great examples of sacrifice from the two main characters. In the case of
Macbeth, we see the theme of sacrifice in the form of sacrificing for power, as opposed to Brave New
World Where sacrifices were made for peace. Discussing this topic in his book, On the Design of
Shakespeare, H. S. Wilson States:
That such a man should sacrifice all the wealth of his human spirit his kindness, his love, his very soul
to become a victim to continual fears, a tyrant ruthlessly murdering in the vain attempt to feel safe,
finally to be killed like a foul beast of prey this is terrible, and pitiful, too. (Wilson

Essay about Child Abduction in the United States
Child Abduction in the United States
It is every parent s worst nightmare. It could occur in your front yard, in front
of the school, in your house, in a store, or anywhere. Just imagine you re in your
favorite department store not but a mile away from your home and you lose sight of your
child. You look down the aisles, have your child paged, and check out at your car all to
no avail. This is exactly what happened with Reve Walsh, mother of young Adam
Walsh. This is her account of what happened from the book, Tears of Rage, written by
John Walsh and posted on the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children
website.

I ll bet he went looking for you.
Well you know how kids are, maybe he went off with the rest of the kids.
Rev #233; kept insisting that her son did not wander off, and that something was
wrong. All around, clerks kept waiting on people as if nothing had happened. She asked a
clerk to page her son. Adam Walsh, please meet your mother in the toy department.
Nothing. After going to her car twice to see if Adam had gone there and looking for him
on her own for two hours, someone finally called the police department.
The police later interviewed a security guard from the store who said that on the
day of Adam s disappearance, there had been four boys playing with the video game in
the toy department. They started causing a ruckus. She separated them and sent two boys
out the north entrance and two out the west entrance. If Adam had been put out the west
entrance, he would have been disoriented because he only knew the north entrance.
By the end of the first week, 150,000 fliers had been printed and 50,000 of them
distributed locally. Adam s photograph was on the poster. The photograph chosen had

Dorothea Lange Analysis
Description
Dorothea Lange creates a work of art using her camera. This black and white photograph from the
depression era portrays the struggle of motherhood while in a destitute state. This photograph would
be much different if the value was altered. Using black and white with the photograph represents the
depression that overcame society at this time. The intensity the photographer reveals would alter if the
photo was in color. The focal point is the women s hand on the lower corner of her face as she stares
off in the distance. One could hypothesize the photographer s immediate image following this one
could be that of the woman s hand on her forehead; suggesting the illusion of motion and time within
this frame. The rough premature wrinkles on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This photo is more than just the vacant women; in addition, exposed are two young children who
appear to seek comfort alongside her. Eyes are immediately drawn to the left from the focal point of
the women s hand and then resting on one of the small children. Unable to identify gender of the child,
the emphasis is the tattered, dirty clothing. Unlike the women who gazes forward the children rest
their heads on the women s shoulders facing backwards. This is another example that the focus
remains with the women and represents the incredible weight on her shoulders. Like Lady Liberty s
scales, the photo shows the child on the left, resting on the women s right shoulder, proportionately
lower than the child on the right, resting on the women s left shoulder, symbolizing the balancing act
of motherhood. The eye is drawn in a clockwise motion from the child on the right towards a vertical
post. The vertical post symbolizes strength but in this photograph part of the post has be cropped. The
vertical post is used to drawn the eye down toward the baby on the women s lap. The baby appears to
be less than a year but older than a newborn. The clothing looks as if it is cleaner; however, the child s

The Ambience Of Shopping Malls
The results of the study reveal that the assortment of stores, sales promotions, ambience of shopping
malls, and comparative economic gains in the malls gather the attention of higher customer traffic to
the malls. The urban shoppers visit shopping malls as a leisure center to relax, tend to shop in
response to various promotions and spend long hours. The major factors that affect shopping
stimulation among urban shoppers are store ambience and attractiveness relating to products and
services, location of the mall, brand value and price and recreational facilities.

outcomes have revealed that it is very rare in the marketing literature concerning the research on store

The Machu Picchu Trail
In the whole wide world, there is no better activity than trekking Peru. While a lot of Americans are
under the impression is for a younger generation, the truth is that the hikes can be accomplished by
just about any body that is in reasonably good health. Certainly, the thing that even the most cynical
person will admit is that the hiking on the Machu Picchu trail is among the treasured wonders of the
world. The thing that so many Americans are worried about is safety. There is this giant misconception
about what the country of Peru is like. While the notion of the third world is prevalent among us
educated in the public school system of the United States in the 80s and 90s, the truth is that there isn t

The people of Peru are the kindest and heart warming people on the planet. In my journeys across the
globe, I have never encountered a population nor a culture that did as much to welcome into their
world. I think that the most important thing for me as a traveller is to connect with and to understand
the people of the places that I travel too. The easiest place that I have found to obtain that connection
has been in Peru. Another thing that many Americans talk about is that they are unsure about the ease
of travel in Peru. There seems to be a concern about finding guides and navigating successfully. The
simple answer to that question is that there are numerous outfitters that specialize in taking Americans
across the country and trekking in all of the most beautiful spots. Obviously Machu Picchu will be on
every first time visitor s list. But there are numerous other attractions that make trekking Peru a world
class destination. The Inca site of Choquequirao can be trekked into by way of a 5 day hike that
includes a five thousand feet elevation gain. Another world famous trek is the dramatic Colca Canyon,
which is famous for its condors. The Andes are the largest mountain range in the

New Issue Of New Federalism
New Federalism is known as commitment to returning powers to the state governments. Proposed by
President Ronald Reagan, who believed federal grants were just a scandal of imposing the federal
interests on the states. Reagan believed that federal government would allow a more efficient
government within the states and the nation. This reminded America of the main point now of the 10th
amendment that because the states are created under the the federal government, it should work for the
states, and not be overpowered. New Federalism is also known as Competitive Federalism due
consent struggle of the national and local government trying to be equal. Many states liked the idea of
New Federalism because new grants were given to states with less restrictions and states and they
were given a choice on how to spend these grants. With this concept, many laws were made in order to
enforce this New Federalism: the Unfunded Mandates Reform Act of 1995 disallowed Congress from
passing federal programs or services without consulting states on how they would be funded. The
Devolution Revolution in 1994, a movement led by former House Representative, Newt Gingrich, and
by republicans who desired to scale back the federal government though campaigning. Overall with
this time period, including now, we see how Ronald Reagan wanted to cease national government
power through the Supreme Court and appointed justices in the 1980s that would be dedicated to
returning power to the states. This

Gladiator Hero s Journey Essay
Gladiator is a film about Maximus, a soldier of Rome that is forced into the gladiator arena after the
emperor, Marcus Aurelius, is killed. This film follows the Hero s Journey almost perfectly. Maximus
encounters some form of all but a couple stages of the Hero s Journey. The first phase of the Hero s
journey is departure, when the hero transitions from one world to another. The first stage in this phase
is the call to adventure, which is when Maximus is asked by Marcus Aurelius to be the next emperor.
Next, refusal of call, Maximus does not wish to hold the power and responsibility of leading an
empire, he does not want to control the people of Rome. This is followed by supernatural aid, which
does not occur in the film, although Maximus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first stage in the returning phase is refusal of return, this does not really happen in the movie,
because Maximus wants to return to his family and restore things to the way they were before his
quest. After the refusal of return comes the magic flight, this is when Maximus dies and is returned to
his family in the afterlife. Next comes the rescue from without, this does not really happen in the
movie as nothing tells Maximus where to go or what to do. However, he does know where to go on his
farm once he s there, and appears to be led by an outside force. The next stage is crossing the return
threshold. This is the point in the movie when Maximus opens the door that leads him to his farm and
family, which is what he was separated from when he began his journey. Although he does not return
to his home physically, he returns to his family, who are like a home to him. The final stage is the
freedom to live, when he reaches this stage, Maximus is no longer burdened by the responsibilities of

Existentialism In Mrs. Dalloway s Waiting For Godot
As a result of both World Wars, many who had been disillusioned by romanticized ideas of war were
shocked by the abrupt pain and loss they experienced. Due to the excruciating catastrophe of War,
people lost faith in religion and humanity and ultimately felt as though life lacked a meaningful
purpose. This pessimistic view of life brought upon the emergence of existentialism as a prominent
philosophical belief in society. Many Existentialists believed that our lives are ultimately meaningless
and that our existence is comprised entirely of our actions; we must acknowledge that our lives occur
while we are waiting for our inevitable deaths. Mrs. Dalloway and Waiting for Godot both exemplify
through their characters that human life and experiences are comprised of the small moments in which
we are collectively waiting for something. This idea of waiting for something is essential to the human
experience because many existentialists of the eras, in which these stories were written, ultimately
believe that a reality in which evils can occur, such as a World War, could not possibly have a caring
God and that our existence must be made up solely of the actions that are performed in the time spent
waiting, Becket would argue naively, for something to occur.
Mrs. Dalloway takes place in an England which was recovering from the ravishes of the first World
War. Following the war, many people began to lose faith in organized religion because they could not
fathom how an all loving and

How Does Lewis Use Temptation In The Screwtape Letter
In The Screwtape Letters by C.S.Lewis, the novel is from the perspective of Screwtape, who is writing
letters to his nephew. Screwtape shows clever subtlety in tempting patients to self centeredness in
prayers through feelings and images, to gluttony through delicacy, and to pride through membership in
an elite Christian social circle. Screwtape uses many, seemingly good, things to manipulate his
patients. Lewis uses this as an illustration of how easily humans can fall into temptation. Screwtape
uses pride, and intellect as a form of temptation throughout the novel, even while the patient is a
Christian. In the beginning, the patient is a hard intellect, which turns him off of Christianity, as it is
illogical. However, the patient is eventually converted to faith, yet even then, he is overcome by pride.
He is prideful to his intellectual friends, as he is more virtuous than them. Yet, he is also prideful to his
Christian friends, since he is obviously the intellectual superior, and has a better grasp on reality.
Screwtape suggest using this as a way to pull him away. With this pride, he will never truly be a part
of the Christian group, and will always be detached from his faith. Lewis uses this as an example of
how pride can corrupt even the purest intentions. The patient lets his intellect ... Show more content on

The Joy Luck Club By Amy Tan Character Analysis
The Joy Luck Club is Amy Tan s first novel. It consists of four sections with sixteen short stories. One
of the main issues of the novel is the relationship between Chinese mothers and their Chinese
American daughters. Your mother is in your bones. (Tan 1998, 30) There is a cultural chasm between
them because of the difference in the way they were brought up and different influences of the
environment.
The members of The Joy Luck Club are four elderly aunties who gather once a week in San Francisco
to play Mah jong and eat Chinese food. When one of the women dies, her daughter Jing mei (June) is
invited to take her place. What will I say? What can I tell them about my mother? I don t know
anything. She was my mother. (Tan 1998, 30) When she realizes that she knows very little about her
own mother she asks the aunties to tell her more about her. That is when they start telling each other
stories.
There is a linguistic gap between the mothers, who are the first generation of Chinese immigrants, and
their American born daughters. The mothers speak only fragments of English and their daughters
speak little or no Chinese at all. So the communication often becomes a matter of translations and
leads to misunderstandings. The first misunderstanding with translation is shown when Jing mei tries
to explain the significance of the club s name, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

love directly to her. The bond is also shown in Anmei s statement that, [y]our mother is in your bones.

example, assume a witness saw a man with a beard and a cap run across an alley near a crime scene. If
the police show this witness one man who has a beard and a cap, the witness might make a positive
identification. If they instead show the witness several men with a beard and a cap, the witness must
make a more detailed identification and may not identify the same man. Identification procedure have

Character Formation
Give Your Full Attention to Character Formation 10th June 2010, Chennai, India For some time now, I
have been deeply thinking about the reason for the slow progress of abhyasis, and in some cases even
about the lack of their progress total lack of progress. Of course, some are progressing well, but that
too is perhaps more because of the personal attention that the Master gives them rather than by their
own effort, and I am not referring especially to their spiritual practice but to their lifestyle. You know,
in Sahaj Marg we are always talking of the Master giving the inner spiritual condition, which for him
is a matter of a second, whereas character formation is the responsibility of the abhyasi. I think, in

It doesn t mean it only laughs at locks. The locksmith is symbolic of every circumstance that can come
between the lover and the beloved. You remember the old story of the man who was so besotted with a
girl that when she went out of town, he followed her. There was a river to cross, and the river was in
flood. He did not know what to do and then he found something like a log of wood. He took that log
of wood and went across the river; and then he found a light burning in the house on the first floor. He
said, That must be my beloved s room. And he saw to his surprise a thick rope hanging, and he said,
Oh, she loves me so much that she has left a rope for me, and he climbed up using it. And when he
entered the room, the girl was stunned. She said, How did you come? He said Oh, there was a boat,
you know, there was a log of wood; I crossed the river. And you have left this rope for me. And to
their horror, they found that the log of wood was a human corpse and the rope was a python! Now,
suppose that lover had been standing on the opposite side I mean I am giving a deliberate twist in
interpretation to this story. Suppose he had stood there waiting until the flood subsided? Then he
found the water was muddy because it was a flooding river. He waited till the water was clear. Then he
tested it to make sure that there was no contamination. Then he crossed it. What would have
happened? So for devoted, loving souls who use these excuses to not come near, I

  • 2. Proliferation of Social Flaws in World of Warcraft Proliferation of Social Flaws in World of Warcraft World of Warcraft is the one of the most popular MMOG in the world, produced by Blizzard entertainment. It has over 11 million players around the world 2.5 million of them in the US. The game is one of the most dominant games in the global market today, which is available in 7 languages and played in all continents, North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia, including South Korea, China, Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau. Despite many scholars believe that the virtual worlds are always in some basic way the expression of utopian desire (Monson). WoW is far from a perfect world. In addition to the ethnic discrimination I ve read about in the reading this semester by Lisa Nakamura, I also realized it involves extreme stereotypes. The WoW is set in a high fantasy world where players are able to select race based avatars races (orcs and dwarves) and classes (mage, warrior, priest). They are under the imaginary world of Azeroth where they find themselves in the midst of an ongoing battle between two warring factions, the Alliance and the Horde. Players kill monsters and complete quests in order to gain experience and gears . They can also learn professions such as cooking, fishing, and blacksmithing, which enable them to craft items like real world human beings (Mccreery). While this might seem to be like Plato s Republic, in fact, it still involves extreme stereotypes, due to its euro centrism and embedded ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Fruit In Christina Rossetti s Goblin Market Fruit as a Vessel in the Goblin Market Christina Rossetti s poem, Goblin Market, centers around two sisters, Lizzie and Laura, who become entangled in the schemes of fruit selling goblin men. The goblins attempt to soil the women s purity with delectable treats, but fail as a result of the strong will and love of the sisters. One could assume that the fruit, which causes premature death and loss of passion in anyone who eats it, would be the focal point of interpretation; it is the forbidden fruit that calls to sinners and causes a fall from grace, or the manifestation of forbidden sexuality in a conservative period. However, this interpretation fails to see beyond the obvious and lacks depth when considering all of the Goblin Market s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Laura and Lizzie are very much opposites, or more so complementaries, as deduced by their close relationship and polar personalities. Laura looks and listens, which puts her at risk of the goblins, while Lizzie physically shuts her eyes and ears as to not fall victim to the goblin cry. In this way, the goblins are able to appeal to Laura by singing a very descriptive and decadent song about all their eccentric fruit. The song is meant to be an advertisement that Laura cannot resist because her nature is to be curious, and she relies on her hearing and sight to feed her decisions. This is a key element to the poem, that Laura heavily relies on her senses while Lizzie does not, following that Lizzie could run back home with her eyes and ears ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sylvie dreamed about what her grandmother and she would do with the ten dollars. Sylvie awakens one morning with the idea she would find the White Heron. Once she found the White Heron she realized the bird s life is more important than the ten dollars. I believe the author Sarah Jewett, wanted everyone to realize sometimes the wants and needs of someone else s outweighs your own. Evaluation The story The White Heron, Sarah Jewett narrates the story by using third person. I believe in this Sarah uses imagery when she described what Sylvie saw and heard in the forest. • 5. Karl Marx s Class Conflict Theory Karl Marx s Class Conflict Theory Introduction Karl Marx believed that struggle or conflict among classes was an inevitable feature of capitalism based on the argument that various groups in a society or social classes perpetually fight and compete for resources and power, hence the groups remains polarized against each other. The Karl Marx s conflict theory views behavior from the perspective of conflict or tension among two or more groups. The conflict does not necessarily translate to violence but rather takes the form of struggle within political negotiations, business, philosophical ideologies or personal attitudes. A critical analysis of Karl Marx conflict theory s point of view reveals that the conflict of social classes is the major aspect of societal conflict, and is mostly propagated by the differences in economic statuses and inequalities in distribution. Human societies have been class based in some way and the class factor has been the most basic dividing or differentiating factor between broad social groups. In the economic sphere that Marx s theory focuses on, there is a class that own and control means of economic production which could be referred to as the upper class, and there is the class that maybe own nothing, but their ability to sell their labor power in return for wages which could be referred to as the middle or low class. From that understanding, and based on the conflict theory, one might argue that unequal distribution of resources and access ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Relationship Between Language And Symbol The definition of a symbol according to Merriam Webster Dictionary is something that stands for something else by reason of relationship or association; and can either be letters, pictures, an action, object or event. Symbols are not restricted to pictures or objects, but can include gestures as well as words. Symbol use is necessarily not just for infants, but adults as well and is crucial to the way humans think. Not only does something such as a map serve as a symbol but words such as wedding ring can also be seen as a symbol. Therefore, it is clear that language and symbols go hand in hand. The question that arises then is the affect of these two on learning in young children. Many studies have been conducted studying the relationship and affect between language and symbol use in infants. It is understood that linguistic and symbolic abilities overlap , but language is far more complex than learning symbols. (Namy, Waxman, 1998) When infants are first learning words, they connect the words they re being exposed to, to the objects around them. Therefore, early word acquisition focuses on the symbolic nature of words. (Namy, Waxman, 1998) This study more specifically focuses on how infants distinguish between words and other symbols and how this relationship changes with development. A more recent study proposed that, early word acquisition is a function of a general symbolic ability, suggesting that infants learn words and symbols with the same ability at the ... • 8. The I Set Out On A Road Trip racy and I set out on a road trip to Santa Barbara to do a little site seeing and have some lunch. Having left late, we were met by huge crowds and no parking. Wanting to enjoy some time away from home, we decided to continue up the coast and go to Solvang. As we approached Solvang, we saw the sign for Sunstone Winery. Having seen pictures and hearing about their cave, it didn t take much to convince us to stop and see what they had to offer. Driving up and walking through a vine covered archway, you are greeted by a French style Courtyards and a picnic ground where people are sitting around enjoying the outdoors with a glass of wine. To the right of the vine covered archway is a beautiful tasting room also reflecting the French motif. Across the courtyard are two large wooden doors on a stone masonry structure that is built into the side of the hill. This is the location of their barrel aging cave and is frequently used for special events by club members. Walking into the tasting room we were warmly greeted by the staff of Sunstone. As we approached the bar, Jonathan Flores introduced himself and asked if we would like to taste their wines. Who could refuse. Sunstone has 2 different tasting flights from which to select. They have the Classic List and the Reserve List to choose from. Sunstone s primary emphasis is on Rhone and Bordeaux with red varietals being their primary focus but they do have a very nice selection of white wines. Johnathan began to ... • 9. Comparison Of Socrates And The Ox-Bow Incident The book The Trial and Death of Socrates and the movie The Ox Bow Incident were stories that resulted in the death of the innocent. In The Trial and Death of Socrates, Socrates is sentenced to death on the charge of corrupting the youth by a democratic trial. This took place in 399 BC in Athens. This is an account of the philosopher s death written by his student, Plato. In The Ox Bow Incident, three men are hanged by a mob for the murder of a man. The story takes place in the American West during the 1940s. The film was directed by William A. Wellman. In both these tragedies there is an unfair judgement by a mob, the innocent failing to persuade their accusers of their innocence, and the force of peer pressure. The biggest similarity between the Ox bow three and Socrates is that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Socrates was poisoned and the others were hanged. This wasn t the result of poor persuasion, but their efforts did both fail. The men failed because the mob didn t want to consider that the men could possibly be innocent. The majority of both mobs refused to look over any evidence that proved the men were not guilty. Socrates was a known trouble maker, but he did not hurt anyone. The worst Socrates did was annoy the officials, and this resulted in the ending of his life. He stood up in front of the crowd and explained exactly why he shouldn t receive the death penalty, but the majority of them did not pay attention to his reasoning. Ignoring the evidence was easier at Ox Bow. There was evidence against them. They had the man s gun, the man s cattle with no bill of sell, a motive of cow rustling, and they didn t have an alibi. With all this evidence, it was extremely easy to overlook the fact that they didn t know that the man was dead. They acted on the words of someone who thought he had heard someone say that the man had been murdered in a ditch. • 10. Insanity And The Insanity Defense The purpose of this essay is to explain why the insanity plea, or the insanity defense as it is also known, is not a legitimate defense for any type of crime. The insanity defense has been around for a number of years but does it make a mockery of the legal system? While many people have used the insanity defense, it loses more times than it wins. This defense is used when someone believes they did not know right from wrong while committing the crime. The problem with this is that it is hard to know someone s mental state when there is not much evidence to go on. Someone can become mentally ill after a crime or someone may have been mentally ill before a crime. Neither one of these issues always weigh on the actual crime. A large ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While it is important to note that there are certain behaviors that are found to be common when someone is depressed, depression does not facilitate itself the same way in all people. The National Institute of Mental Health (n.d.) tells us, People with depressive illnesses do not all experience the same symptoms. The severity, frequency, and duration of symptoms vary depending on the individual and his or her particular illness. Understanding that there are so many different interpretations of the word insanity, it could be argued that knowing the difference between right and wrong is not always clear. The following syllogistic formula can be considered when thinking about this topic: Major Premise: All people who plead insanity are admitting to a mental disease or defect. Minor Premise: If a person has a mental disease or defect, it does not mean that he/she cannot tell right from wrong. Conclusion: If a person uses an insanity defense, it does not mean that he/she did not know right from wrong while committing the crime. Brannigan (2005) tells the story of Andrea Pia Yates. Ms. Yates was a mother of five children all under the age of seven. While Ms. Yates was depressed, her own claim, she drowned each child one at a time in the bathtub of their home on March 13, 2002. She admitted to killing all of the children, but she claimed that she was not guilty by reason of insanity. She was found guilty and is now ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The Digital Divide In The United States Outline, Digital Divide According to Mary H, digital divide is not only the gap between people who have access to technology and those who do not, it is also the inequality in the kind of access. Though most Americans access the technology, the difference in the quality of access remains. Yet the Constitution guarantees the equality of opportunity, the digital divide subsists in the USA because there is economic disparity among people. Therefore, some social class does not earn the advantages of technology and the gap between upper class and lower class will grow up. • 12. The Theater Of The Absurd The theatre of the absurd is a term formulated by Martin Esslin during the 1950s and 1960s. Essentially, it is derived from Albert Camus, the French author, in his Myth of Sisyphus. The origins of the absurd theatre are in the hard experiments in the art during the 1920s and 1930s. The absurd drama is not determined to solve any problem on the modern stage. Absurd drama excludes language as a resource for communication. Language has become meaningless exchanges. In fact, it fails to reflect the importance of human experience; it is restricted to the surface meaning and never penetrates beyond its depth. The language which is used in absurd drama is specifically conventionalized speech, clichés and slogans that have become very common to many writers. The critics conclude that life is basically meaningless and, later, miserable, with no hope because of the unavoidable futility of man s exertions. In these dramas, realism is intolerable, so there are illusions. There is no discernible plot. Conversations are repeated. In these dramas, there is no certain purpose or reason because it does not solve any problem. The main theme in absurd drama is a failure of communication and the mingling of comic and serious elements. Also, theatre of the absurd appears to react broadly against the impact of religion and its dimension in contemporary life. In other words, we can say that it is an attempt to restore the necessity of myth and ritual in the modern age, by making the individual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The crusades can be the event that is accredited with the way that society looks at holy wars or wars of religion. Reasons for the crusades are the threat that the Turks presented to Christian territories, massive spread of Christianity, and for pilgrimage (completing God s will). The Turks presented a huge threat to Christians. Muslims were set out on conquest of Christian territories. Although the Byzantium s were able to hold on important regions Greece and Asia Minor the Turks did capture much of Byzantium land. These stories are often about the Thousand Enemies and how they are a threat to the rabbits, especially El ahrairah. Humans are presented as one of the Thousand. The cars they come across are very unnatural to the rabbits being faster than a rabbit, and don t notice a rabbit at all ( Literature in Brief Information about Watership Down. ). The violence of a machine such as a car is underestimated until the group comes across the dead yona, a hedgehog overrun by a vehicle (Adams 49). Adams emphasizes the violence of the deed by describing the creature as a flattened, bloody mass of brown prickles and white fur, with small black feet and snout crushed round the edges. The flies crawled upon it, and here and there the sharp point of gravel pressed up through the flesh (Adams 49). The rabbits do not see a point in such a violent act, for an animal like a yona cannot do much more than threaten slugs and beetles, and nothing would eat a yona either. Although Efrafa seems like a totally evil place, the reason for such evilness lies in the treatment of humans. Existentialism In Mrs. Dalloway s Waiting For Godot As a result of both World Wars, many who had been disillusioned by romanticized ideas of war were shocked by the abrupt pain and loss they experienced. Due to the excruciating catastrophe of War, people lost faith in religion and humanity and ultimately felt as though life lacked a meaningful purpose. This pessimistic view of life brought upon the emergence of existentialism as a prominent philosophical belief in society. Many Existentialists believed that our lives are ultimately meaningless and that our existence is comprised entirely of our actions; we must acknowledge that our lives occur while we are waiting for our inevitable deaths. Mrs. Dalloway and Waiting for Godot both exemplify through their characters that human life and experiences are comprised of the small moments in which we are collectively waiting for something. This idea of waiting for something is essential to the human experience because many existentialists of the eras, in which these stories were written, ultimately believe that a reality in which evils can occur, such as a World War, could not possibly have a caring God and that our existence must be made up solely of the actions that are performed in the time spent waiting, Becket would argue naively, for something to occur. Screwtape shows clever subtlety in tempting patients to self centeredness in prayers through feelings and images, to gluttony through delicacy, and to pride through membership in an elite Christian social circle. Screwtape uses many, seemingly good, things to manipulate his patients. Lewis uses this as an illustration of how easily humans can fall into temptation. In the beginning, the patient is a hard intellect, which turns him off of Christianity, as it is illogical. However, the patient is eventually converted to faith, yet even then, he is overcome by pride. He is prideful to his intellectual friends, as he is more virtuous than them. • 34. The Joy Luck Club By Amy Tan Character Analysis The Joy Luck Club is Amy Tan s first novel. It consists of four sections with sixteen short stories. One of the main issues of the novel is the relationship between Chinese mothers and their Chinese American daughters. Your mother is in your bones. (Tan 1998, 30) There is a cultural chasm between them because of the difference in the way they were brought up and different influences of the environment. The members of The Joy Luck Club are four elderly aunties who gather once a week in San Francisco to play Mah jong and eat Chinese food. When one of the women dies, her daughter Jing mei (June) is invited to take her place. What will I say? What can I tell them about my mother? I don t know anything. She was my mother. (Tan 1998, 30) When she realizes that she knows very little about her own mother she asks the aunties to tell her more about her. That is when they start telling each other stories. There is a linguistic gap between the mothers, who are the first generation of Chinese immigrants, and their American born daughters. The mothers speak only fragments of English and their daughters speak little or no Chinese at all. So the communication often becomes a matter of translations and leads to misunderstandings. The first misunderstanding with translation is shown when Jing mei tries to explain the significance of the club s name, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 35. Examples Of False Identification The witness is not visible to those in the lineup. The witness is asked to identify which, if any, of the individuals committed the crime. A lineup places greater demands on the memory of the witness than does a viewing of a single suspect, and is believed to reduce the chances of a false identification. He did not know what to do and then he found something like a log of wood. He took that log of wood and went across the river; and then he found a light burning in the house on the first floor. He said, That must be my beloved s room. And he saw to his surprise a thick rope hanging, and he said, Oh, she loves me so much that she has left a rope for me, and he climbed up using it. And when he entered the room, the girl was stunned. She said, How did you come? He said Oh, there was a boat, you know, there was a log of wood; I crossed the river. And you have left this rope for me. And to their horror, they found that the log of wood was a human corpse and the rope was a python! Now, suppose that lover had been standing on the opposite side I mean I am giving a deliberate twist in interpretation to this story. Suppose he had stood there waiting until the flood subsided? Then he found the water was muddy because it was a flooding river. He waited till the water was clear. Then he tested it to make sure that there was no contamination. Then he crossed it. What would have happened? So for devoted, loving souls who use these excuses to not come near, I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
