A Comparison Of The Five Characters In The Catcher In The Rye
Today I m dining with 5 characters from the novel The Catcher in the Rye, who I consider close
friends; the characters are Holden Caulfield, Ackley, Jane Gallagher, Phoebe Caulfield, and
Stradlater. By the end of our Chinese dinner we all received a fortune cookie! The first to open
their fortune cookieswas Holden. His fortunesaid, Don t be unreal, this is only appropriate for
Holden because throughout the book he struggles with accepting reality and learning how to
cooperate with it. Ackley struggles to open his fortune cookie, but he got there. His fortune said,
Lying is always your first choice, but it will become your last resort once you become the lie
yourself. This made complete sense considering Ackley was always lying about his sexual
encounters; he kept his message to himself. Jane opens hers to see a surprise, You know you re
respected and loved, embrace it. Jane is one of the few people Holden enjoys. This gave a hint to
Jane, it left her puzzled. Phoebe, Holden s younger sister opened her fortune cookie with a sly
look on her face. She read her fortune aloud, Sunshine. She got this message because her
innocence would be the sunlight to Holden s day. Soon the sexy bastard (a nickname Holden gave
to his roommate Stradlater) at the table got to his fortune cookie. The fortune cookie said, Gross.
Stradlater is embarrassed and decides not to share his fortune with the table. This fortune was
accurate because he is very unhygienic at Home. Everyone

Michael Kimmel s Manhood In America
In Michael Kimmel s Manhood in America: A Cultural History , he provides a broad, heavily
researched cultural history of the development of manhood and the definition of masculinity
throughout American history. Beginning in the 19th century and ending in the present day
administration of Barack Obama, Kimmel identifies that over time society has demanded more and
more that the common manbe self made . Kimmel s overall goal in writing this book is to introduce
a new concept of masculinitythat eliminates the battle that every man faces when trying to achieve
so called manhood . He explores the natural instincts that men have and how these instincts are
affected by self control, the surrounding environment, and overall levels of happiness. Starting in
the 19th century, men had an increasing pressure to prove their masculinity. In order to support
themselves and their families, American men s desire to prove masculinity came at the cost of
minorities, women, and even man s own personal happiness. This restlessness of being a... Show

In my opinion, man s instinct to prove his masculinity, desire for competition, and longing to reach
manhood is natural and cannot be changed. Overtime, this natural instinct has decreased and
increased as the environment has changed. The anger sparked by progressivism in the workforce
brought out this instinct in American men in the 19th century, while further institutions promoting
manliness continued to evolve in the 20th century. In modern day, people such as myself who
believe that everyone should have equal opportunity keeps the instinct of proving my manhood in
check. However, if there weren t conservative men in our country who have this anger against other
groups and have the desire to prove their masculinity, America would appear weak in the eyes of
countries who have more masculine

The Unbearable Lightness Of Being By Milan Kundera
People attempt to find comfort in aligning themselves to certain polar values, whether they are
things like good or bad, order or chaos, or even political values such as liberal or conservative. In
these values people assign for themselves, they are searching for contentment, but within every
human is a battle between the two sides these two sides are lightness and weight. The Unbearable
Lightness of Beingby Milan Kunderadepicts this feud in the lives of 4 tragic protagonists: Tomas,
Tereza, Franz, and Sabina. These four are in a constant feud between lightness and weight, and only
removing the veil of these human abstractions can lead towards a path for contentment. The
Unbearable Lightness of Being depicts this battle existing in... Show more content on

Franz, too, experiences a conflict with his weight. He falls deeply for Sabina after leaving his
child and wife, and his affair soon becomes the most weighty thing in his life. Yet when he met
Sabina at the airport. As the plane gained altitude, he felt lighter and lighter. At last, he said to
himself, he was living in truth (114). Even if the lightness is just something he wants to
experience and he is not truly living in lightness, he is still fighting to become light. Franz has a
deep desire to be like Sabina, and he worships her for the lightness she possesses and he lacks.
Kundera discusses the idea of the struggle for lightness and weight existing in the real world as
well. Yakov Stalin, the son of Joseph Stalin, experienced the highest degree of this internal
conflict: Rejection and privilege, happiness and woe no one felt more concretely than Yakov how
interchangeable opposites are, how short the step from one pole of human existence to the other
(244). Kundera notes that the poles of lightness and weight are dizzyingly close, and it is this
dizziness that drives Yakov to try to kill himself. The conflict inside him is so uncomfortable that
he sees the need to end his life just to stop it. This proves that lightness and weight, rather than
allowing people to find contentment, only drives people further away from it.

A Generation Of The Workplace
A Generation Lost In the Workplace

Columbia College
A Generation Lost In the Workplace
The workplace is ever changing. There are currently four generations in the work environment
today, and because of longer life expectancies it will soon by five as the youngest generation enters
the workforce joining the current four. Generational transitions in the work environment cause the
shift of power to be handed from one generation to the next. These transitions are complex but they
have never bypassed a generation. Today s workplace is overlooking an entire generation, that
generation is Generation X. Current power holders, Boomers, are bypassing Generation X and
handing the reins to Millennials. Failing to utilize Generation X is a mistake, and managers can
maximize employees my utilizing this overlooked sector of the workforce.
Generations
The oldest generation in the workforce is the Greatest Generation or also known as
Traditionalist (born prior to 1946) ( Mixing and Managing Four Generations of Employees FDU
). They came of age during the great depression, the start of the cold war to be seen and not heard
(MU Extension). Believing in a work ethic of loyalty, tenure, and quietly working hard gets
rewarded. While some are still employed full, and it seems will never retire, many have handed off
the reins to Baby Boomers.

Pros And Cons Of Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility
The Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility received its first detainees in 2002.. Guantanamo has been
a topic of debate since the first 20 detainees arrived; should the facility close or remain open?
Guantanamo detention facility should remain open because it does not entice terrorist to strike, the
prison is not used enough, detainees who were sent back to their home countries have returned to
terrorism, and the prisoners were not treated poorly at the facility. Critics of Guantanamo say it
serves as a potent propaganda tool for the Islamic State, which makes the prisoners it captures wear
orange jumpsuits, nearly identical to those worn by Guantanamo inmates. What they fail to realize

(Karmiova, 2001) and is predictive of subsequent multiple organ failure, infection and than
eventually death in these patients. These conditions have many features common with sepsis.
Blood concentrations of various cytokines, soluble receptors and endotoxins increase within as
early as 3 hours after cardiac arrest, the magnitude of these changes is associated with the outcome.
Activation of blood coagulation without adequate activation of endogenous fibrinolysis is an
important pathophysiological mechanism that may contribute to microcirculatory reperfusion
disorders (Böttiger, 1995). For patients that undergo CPR and achieve ROSC, their coagulation
/anticoagulation and fibrinolysis/antifibrinolsis systems are activated. Anticoagulant factors such as
antithrombin, protein S and protein C are decreased and this decrease is associated with transient
increases in endogenous activated protein C after resuscitation (Adrie,2005). The stress of total
body oxygen debt also affects adrenal production and function. Although patients have increased
plasma cortisol levels they have a relative adrenal insufficiency defined as failure to respond to
corticotrophin. This failure to respond causes the adrenal cortex to not be stimulated to secrete the
hormones necessary to respond to stress.

Feral Children Essay
The Wild Children
Child: Oxana Malaya
The definition of the word feral children is undomesticated children. It has been a proven case that
young children cannot survive on their own in the wild they are merely adopted by animals that
choose to love them and want to help the children and teach them their way of life. An animal can
sense when they re in danger but when these children pose no threat all they want is devotion, love,
protection they didn t receive from the parents or guardians that abounded them.
Facts known about the child:
Oxana Malaya lived in Russia, Ukraine in an old village farm at Blagoveshchensk. For six years

The Assassination Of President John F. Kennedy
Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable. JFK was
a man defined by his morality, however his appeasing methods were perceived by some as a
weakness, ultimately preluding his inescapable death. It is to a highly significant extent that the
CIA was responsible for the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, as contrasting ideologies,
acting as motive, integrated with extensive influence and power, enabled the CIA to eliminate JFK,
to infiltrate their own desired means of governing. as an impediment of desired governing.
Uncertainty of motives, corresponding with former connections to the CIA, generated hesitation for
the solitary conviction of Lee Harvey Oswald. Complications concerning domestic and international
incidents instigated tensions between the CIA and President Kennedy, later acting as an apparent
motive cause for his assassination. Discrepancies regarding eye witness statements, forensic and
photographic evidence emerged with the final report issued by the Warren Commission; this
resulted in concern and uncertainty as to the quality of investigation into the President s death,
highlighting the occurrence of foul play by the CIA.
The CIA had a very significant role in the assassination of JFK, as, despite undisputed evidence
indicating Lee Harvey Oswald s involvement, it is evident he was exploited in a larger, more
elaborate scheme. Lee Harvey Oswald was undeniably a patsy for the CIA, acting as a significant

opportunity for migrants from Asia, Africa and Latin America to be American citizen. This act
fundamentally shifted the ethnic composition of immigrants and overall the US population. One
of the immigrant who was able to came to the US because of this law was my uncle. He moved

Essay about New Social Movements, how they arose and...
What factors account for the rise of new social movements and what effect have they had on
contemporary society?
We are all familiar with the stories of suffragettes burning their bras, and environmental enthusiasts
breaking into labs and liberating rats back to the wild. But what caused women to abruptly rip of
their pinnies, tell dad dinner s in the dog and start running around without appropriate underwear?
What caused contented homemakers to leave the cosy warmth of their gas fires in favour of
chaining themselves to trees?
And are such people an eccentric minority, or have they profoundly affected the way we live and
think in the western world today?
To address these questions I will begin by defining New Social Movements (or ... Show more

The tactical characteristic is the aspect which sets social movements apart from other forms of
political action.
All movements engage in at least some action outside of the institutional or legal channels of
political access. (Lovenduski and Norris, 1996).
There is a diverse range of NSMs fighting for causes from the environment to women to the
elderly to the blacks. For the purposes of this essay I will inspect only a couple in detail, but it
should be retained that they are examples of a bigger wave.
Two of the best known movements are the environmental or Green movement, and the Women s
movement. Both have evolved over the past hundred years into strong and extremely influential
political leagues. Both have the ideological aspect, wanting to change the general public s approach
to their respective causes the environment and equality between sexes. They also have the
organisational factor, with now impressive and far reaching channels of communication. And
finally they have the tactical factor, having utilized many different methods of expressing and
arguing their opinions.
The Green movement has distinct personal and public fields, campaigning for specific issues such
as pollution, renewable energy sources while also questioning the basic values of a developed

The Dangers Of Social Pressure
The Dangers of Relenting to Social Pressure
From early childhood to adulthood, the urge to submit to social pressure is a reality that shapes
everyone on a daily basis. The desire to meet societal expectations is a factor that greatly impacts
decision making from fashion sense, to choosing friends, and to making the right choices in the
work force. Many times, this desire for acceptance repudiates one s beliefs and innate senses. In
Opinions and Social Pressure by Solomon Asch, and Perils of Obedience by Stanley Milgram, the
two psychologists conduct a series of experiments to observe how the influence of social pressure
leads to conformity and obedience to authority. Both experiments demonstrate the adverse effects
of social pressure, for conformity involves a sacrifice of self interests, while blind obedience to
authority results in the harm of others. According to the results of the experiments, social pressure
is a force that can cause people to act outside of their personal convictions and moral conscience.
In Asch s experiment, he gathers a group of seven to nine male college students, to participate in a
psychological experiment in visual judgment experiment in order to observe the time it would take
for a subject to yield to social pressure (Asch 9). The group is told match the length of a line in
comparison to three other lines of differing lengths. Unbeknownst to the subject, the other members
of the group were instructed by the experimenter to beforehand

Immigration Benefits And Promotes Urbanization
Immigration benefits and promotes urbanization in New York and Vancouver from 1860 to 1920.
The period from the late 19th century to the early 20th century is important in the urban
development history of Canadian and American. Urbanization is a historical process that contains
urban development. Urbanization is a process of population concentration as well as a process that
advanced production modes substitute backward modes. At the same time, it is also the process to
adapt to the mode of production and to innovate lifestyle. Hence, urbanization is a dynamic process
that many aspects of economics, society and culture comprehensively transform caused by the
revolution of social productive forces.
The urban population boost resulted in various benefits. Immigration is a main propelling force to
urbanization. It also propelled optimization of the urban population structure, shaped the
characteristics of urban residence, and also formed civic multicultural style and features. In my
opinion, immigration benefits and promotes urbanization in Vancouver and New York from 1860
to 1920.
Canada s urbanization was inherently and closely related with that of Europe and North America.
Local factors and communities elite played a significant role in the development of Canada s cities
(especially in western part). Vancouver is a representative of urbanization and immigration from
1860 to 1920. Norbert Magdonald noted that prior to the arrival of the first train in 1887, the

the greatest science centers in the United States. This center is known as the Carnegie Science
Center. This science center is home to two different science centers that came together as one. It
has a very vast history and importance to its region. Its ability to attract families and people all of

center was created by Andrew Carnegie, entrepreneur and philanthropist, who had a big plan.
Andrew Carnegie was born November 25, 1825 in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. His family had a
huge interest in books and education. He and his family arrived to United States in 1848. Carnegie
began working at the age of 13 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. He eventually became a telegraph
messenger and then moved up and became an assistant to one of the most important railroad
officials. He then learned the ropes of the railroad industry and business. In 1856, he became
superintendent. Over the next 10 years, Carnegie became known as a steel tycoon and started his

Potato Famine of 1845 Essay
At the end of the summer of 1845, a thick rain fell throughout Ireland, carrying with its pores of
blight that killed multiple crops, including the potato crop. Because Ireland was dependent on the
potato crop, the results of this blight were catastrophic. Britain, who had control over Ireland at
this time, did very little to help the now starving and poor Irish. As a result of English disregard
towards the Irish during the Potato Famine of 1845, the already fragile relationship between Ireland
and England worsened.
When this particular blight, containing the fungus phytophthora infestans, struck the potatoes, it
killed the tuber of the plant and potatoes all throughout Ireland began to rot. The blight also hit the

Furthermore, there was an outbreak of cholera in 1849. Ireland was running out of space for
corpses to be buried, so hundreds of these bodies were not buried with coffins; just a few inches
below the soil and ground almost touching the corpse next to it (Kinealy, 93). Many of the Irish
that didn t die from these diseases did die from starvation. Seeing as the potato was main source
of nutrition for many Irish people, many became malnourished. Not only was it nutritious, but
also the potato was very cheap and fed large amounts of people. The Potato Famine hit the
hardest in 1847; it was the height of hunger in Ireland. It is thought that over half of a million
people die in 1847, compared to the million that died from 1845 1848 (Kinealy, 92). Many of the
Irish chose to become potato farmers, due to the fact that it could be grown on such cheap land.
When the famine hit, thousands soon found themselves out of work. Many could not pay their
rent, and were evicted. Some landlords tried their best to help their tenants and not charge them
for rent, but soon they needed a source of income as well (Scally, 117). Between 1849 and 1854,
approximately 250,000 people were evicted from their homes. Whole families were left out on the
street to die (Kinealy, 125). Now, homeless and starving, many soon emigrated. The majority of

The Warrior Chief flanked by Warriors and Attendants is an art piece from the Nigerian state of
Benin. It s a brass artwork made using a process called wax casting which involves creating molds
into the desired shapes and pouring molten metal (in this case brass) into the molds. As the name
suggests this art piece shows a chief with his warriors and attendants. Outside of these obvious

and symbolism that narrate the artist s story behind the artwork.
A close examination of this piece concluded that this artwork is a form of propaganda; which
serves the purpose of showing the power, prestige and authority of a figure. The artist purposefully
made the middle figure the most captivating and attention drawing figure for this reason. As such

The Literary Work of Harriet Beecher Stowe
...the heart has no tears to give, it drops only blood, bleeding itself away in silence. ( Stowe 30).
Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811 1896) was the most popular American writer of the 19th century.
Her use of literary realism merges with the writings of Howells, Twain, and Crane (Reuben).
Harriet Beecher Stowe s writings were influenced by her religious and moral beliefs. She left a
long lasting impact on the American Renaissance time period due to her puritan style of writing.
Stowe was born in Litchfield, Connecticut in 1811. Her mother, Roxana Foote Beecher, was a
well educated and artistic granddaughter of a Revolutionary War general, and Lyman Beecher, a
Presbyterian minister with a strong interest in Puritan theology. Stowe grew up in a household in
which religion, reading and writing were considered a major part of childhood. After the Stowes

World Wide Market Essay
Few causes can unite agriculture corporations, labour unions, and industrial lobbies, but anti
globalization is one of them. Economic globalization is the process of creating one world wide
market through freer trade, flow of labour, and flow of capital. It is a phenomenon inseparable from
today economy, and is a trend that will continue for the foreseeable future. There is much discussion
in the academic community about the political ramifications of economic globalization. However, I
will be solely discussing the economic aspects of globalization and how it effects the prosperity and
living standards of people around the world. Though the current international economy faces many
challenges, the idea of trade liberalization is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Just as it makes little sense to establish tariffs between Toronto and Hamilton, it is unreasonable to
presume that dividing the world economy in a similar manner would be beneficial.2 Moreover,
larger markets foster competition as firms face additional rivals. Without their previous protections,
producers must innovate their way to succeeding in the market.3 Globalization can only advance
the world economy by improving efficiency and driving innovation, while self sufficiency and
isolation only create limits to economic growth. Globalization created many benefits to the world
economy. The world s most advanced economies owe much of their previous growth to the Bretton
Woods system a series of international institutions that fostered free tradeand free flow of capital.
The per capital GDP in Western Europe doubled in sixteen years.4 Japan, the greatest success
under this world order, experienced an eight fold growth of its economy in only 25 years.5 As the
second wave of globalization came about in the 1970s, successes similar came about in the years
after. Economies in East Asia opened themselves to international tradeand foreign capital. These
countries soared by using their comparative advantage in manufacturing to create successful export
oriented economies. From 1965 to 1999, the per capita income of South Koreans and Taiwanese
grew nine fold.6 These countries went from being poor countries to becoming some of the most

Mesopotamia Disadvantages
The first river valley civilization is Mesopotamia. Southwest Asia is predominantly desert, but
there is an exception. The Fertile Crescent is the name given to land in this area. The Fertile
Crescent is known for having great soil for farming. It is the area near the Mediterranean Sea. This
area was soon called Mesopotamia, which means land between the rivers. The Tigrisand Euphrates
River both run through Mesopotamia. There were advantages and disadvantages that came with
these two rivers. The land around the rivers is wonderful for farming. The soil is very fertile,
hence the name The Fertile Crescent. Although the rivers are good for the farmers, they flooded
every year. This caused problems for the people of Mesopotamia. Some other disadvantages for
the Sumerians included the fact that they did not have many natural barriers. This made it easier
for other countries to invade. Also, there was not an ideal number of natural resources. This was a

Egypt was divided into villages that lived under their own rules. Eventually all of Egypt became

Egypt was a theocracy; this meant the the rulers were centered around the religious leaders.
Pharaohs were the Egyptian god kings. They were worshipped and thought of as gods. The people

The Swastika In The Complete Maus
In the scene Vladek and Anja s first view of a swastika from window of a train from The
Complete Maus ,Art Speigelman uses several literary devices to deliver the story and emphasise it
s importance. Some examples of the literary devices he uses includes intensity of shading, dialogue
written and symbolism of objects.
This scene begins with Vladek continuing to narrate from the previous scene, where Anja had a
breakdown after giving birth to Richieu, and decided to go to a sanitarium in Czechoslovakia. They
were passing by a small town, when someone noticed the swastika. Vladek mentions that ..every
Jew from train... Got very excited and frightened . The term excited and frightened are usually
antonyms, suggesting that in this context, excited means stirred up rather than enthusiastic and
happy . In the panel, a Jew is saying Look! , a short sharp ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

There is relatively dark shading in the third panel, creating a gloomy mood in the train carriage.
The biggest symbol in this scene however, is the swastika. The swastika is a symbol for the german
Nazis, as well as war. To the Jewshowever, the swastika is a symbol of fear, suppression and
extermination. In the scene, the third panel uses the swastika as a sign of the German Nazis,
while it is used in repetition when the stories of what was happening to the Jews as a
background. The background is pitch black, with a white circle and the swastika inside. The use
of repetition is to emphasise the demeaning of the Jews, and also functions like a growing moon,
that is dawning over the Jews, but is dominant everywhere. However, the swastika originally has
vertical and horizontal lines, as a symbol of peace, before it was tilted slightly to be used as a
flag for the german Nazis. There is an irony that in the third panel, the flag is folded to look like
the original swastika, perhaps suggesting that there is peace in the town because there aren t any

The Childhood Of Teenage Hood
Michelle, an eleven year old girl, enjoys the typical activities a girl her age would like to do.
That is why I thought going to the mall with Michelle, her mother and her little brother would be a
good idea. During our day at the mall and our talk after lunch, I was able to get an insight into her
psychological development as a pre teen. Not only was Michelle dealing with the transformation
from childhoodto teenage hood, but was also struggling with understanding her medical setbacks
as a child. At age 3 Michelle s parents found out that she was suffering from leukemia. This
changed majority of Michelle s childhood. By age 5 Michelle was free of her cancer and able to
continue most her life normally. In reality, Michelle will never be able to live her life normally
because she will always live the fact that she had an illness. Because Michelle had leukemia as a
child, it seemed that her awareness of herself wasn t the same as other girls her age.
A commonly known stereotype that is understood by most people is that women have lower self
esteem than men. Preteen girls are at a much greater risk than adults at being influenced by outside
stimuli that can cause self esteem to lower. I think that girls tend to have a harder time at the
beginning of puberty, while boys have a harder time later in puberty. Research shows that girls
reported lower self esteem than boys in early adolescence and late adolescent boys reported lower
self esteem than younger boys. (Polce Lynch,

Dating Violence
Introduction
All three articles address dating violence as well as sexual assault. This topic is important to me
because in this day and age dating violence and sexual assault are very common with individual s
period. Regardless of the person being homosexual or heterosexual, Edwards, Sylaska, Barry,
Moynihan, Banyard, Cohn, Walsh and Ward (2015) were able to show studies that included
participants being victimized of sexual assault and dating violence. Sexual assault and dating

The Woman Warrior Summary
In Maxine Hong Kingston s The Woman Warrior , in chapter 2 White Tigers Kingston says that
Chinese immigrants say things such as better to raise geese than girls . They also say Chinese
executed women who disguised themselves as soldiers or students, no matter how bravely they
fought or how high they scored on the examinations . I argue that in doing this, the texts suggest
shockingly, that Chinese immigrants continue to treat woman as if they are worthless, which is
why Maxine Hong Kingstoncompares herself to Mulan. She just wants to honor her family and
feel accepted. Kingston wants to honor her family once and for all. In order to do so, Kingston
completes fifteen years of training. At the age of fourteen she wants to save her Brother and
Husband but her mentors tell Kingston she is not ready to fight, that she is too young. What was
so intriguing about this situation was when Kingston said When I could point at the sky and
make a sword appear, a silver bolt in the sunlight, and control its slashing with my mind, the old
people said I was ready to leave . This shows that the sword flying in the air represents Chinese
culture. Kingston then continues to say I saw the baron s messenger leave our house, and my
father was saying, This time I must go and fight , taking her father s place. Kingston then pretends
to be a man, becoming a great warrior, wearing male armor and commanding men who fight under
her. What was most shocking

Birling shows no signs of compassion for the death of an innocent girl and says arrogantly, I
care. I was almost certain for a knighthood in the next Honours List. This is what Birling is
thinking about after all that has happened, therefore this reveals how selfish and self centred he
is. However, Sheila s thoughts are completely the opposite of this and she explains, I behaved
badly too. I know I did. I m ashamed of it. But now you re beginning to pretend all over that
nothing much has happened. This reveals that Sheila has strong emotions and feelings and cares
that Eva Smith has died. She regrets the mistakes that she has made in the past and is trying to
learn from them. It shows that she feels very guilty and responsible for the suicide and is a very
sensitive and caring character. She has learnt her lesson, but believes that her parents are acting
very irresponsibly and unintelligently. Later, she says to her father, You don t seem to have learnt
anything. This is a very realistic statement, and the audience know that Birling hasn t learnt
anything. Contrasting this, Sheila has changed and matured a lot from prior to the Inspector visit.
She has developed miraculously throughout the play, from acting like a young child, being nave

truly beneficial or not have become prevalent. Scientists around the world are making their

The major drawbacks include allergies, decreased nutritional value, increased toxicity, and antibiotic
resistance ( Harmful Effects of the Agent ). First, because genetically modified organisms are
created through a mixture of various genes from other organisms that might cause an allergic
reaction, consuming these products poses as a threat to the individuals who have serious allergic
reactions. Theoretically, the genetically modified foods have low nutrition because of the gene
modification process. For instance, genetically modified soybeans produce fewer phytoestrogen
compounds, chemicals that keep the heart healthy, than the traditional soybeans (Batalion). Third,
from animals to humans, all organisms that consume genetically modified organisms, which usually
contain antibiotic resistant genes, could develop tolerance to antibiotics due to excessive exposure.
On the other hand, detrimental bacteria and viruses could also develop resistance to the antibiotics
in the future, making humans more vulnerable. Lastly, to increase the efficiency of agriculture,
scientists have engineered crops to produce pesticides on their own. The biotechnology companies

Gas Embolism
As the practice of medicine advances, patients and the society in general demand medical
services (especially surgery and minor invasive procedures) that are devoid of side effects and
complications. Common among the advance medical services are laparoscopic surgery and

patients but also reduces tissue trauma, pain, bleeding and above all preserves the integrity of
patient s body as surgical incision are quite smaller compared to conventional or open surgical

in spite of the advantages of CO2, its use in clinical practice also come with fatal complications

Why research is considered essential in the decision making function of management.
Research may be defined as a systematic inquiry whose objective is to provide the information
that will allow managerial problems to be solved. It is also seen as an activity that is often
carried out by most people, knowingly or unknowingly in the course of their daily lives. It is a
systematic inquiry whose objective is to provide the information that will allow managerial
problems to be solved. It is another word for gathering information. The more information we

The research mechanism enables the organization to better understand and comprehend the market,
its customers and competitors. The organization knows exactly what their customers need and
desire, and takes the appropriate steps to deliver that to them. Also, the company can classify
customers on the basis of demographics, such as gender, age, income of the household and
educational levels. Once the company determines its customers primary demographic group, it
takes steps to service them better. Through research, competitors moves and strategies are
highlighted, and the company can then be proactive to preempt them.
Research helps the organization fix problems and cash in on the strengths. Research mitigates
business risks and can help increase demand and sales. Research can primarily be conducted to
gauge the customers perceptions on a specific product. Research is useful in understanding the
broad market and industry situation. Research arms you from wrong information and save time and
money, organization is able to decide on what is required and through this, management is able to
save on cost.
The company can understand what its customers actually want and can deliver that product to
them. When the company is planning to diversify its product range, it will know at the very outset,
through the research mechanism, whether or not there is a demand for such a product. When the

the reader has a limited point of view into Richard Corys personal life; therefore, we are unable to

The last two lines of the first stanza show Richard Cory s high social/economic status: He was a
gentleman from sole to crown, clean favored, and imperially slim. During this time period,
gentlemen were considered high class men, not just kind and respectful. The phrases from soul
to crown and imperially slim portray Richard Cory as royal, expressing the poor s perception of
Richard Cory as a celebrity. In the second stanza, the narrator describes Richard Cory as being
quietly arrayed (line 5), meaning he was dressed in conservative apparel, not trying to draw
attention to himself. This shows Richard Cory was humble despite his high economic/social
status. Although Richard Cory is portrayed as down to earth and human when he talked (line 6),
the poor were charmed with fluttered pulses (line 7) by his greetings along the street. The last

Brief Commentary on the Movie Apollo 13
Paying close attention to the crew members, one would notice how they should be getting along.
They have to work together no matter what and be able to stay calm. If not, it could be a life or
death situation. There were parts in the movie where one of the members had got frustrated and
started arguing with another member. The third member had to calm them down. If they were not
to calm down, things could have got messed up and unwanted situations or hazards could have
happened.
Observing the interactions between the engineers at the mission control center, one could see
that they are an important aspect of the journey. They have to react accordingly and calm when
they get into a tough situation. One could tell that they clearly get frustrated but when a crisis
occurs during the mission, they go on to try and solve the problem, even if it s frustrating at
first. My opinion of Gene Kranz is that he wants to get work down and he wants to get work
done right away. He puts a lot of pressure on his peers, but I think he is a great leader. He doesn t
put pressure on them to be mean, but he does it because he needs them to work fast and efficient. I
personally would want to buy into his ideas and solutions, because he did help resolve a lot of the
problems that went on with the Apollo 13 mission. The issue they needed to solve that was similar
to our project was when they had to come up with a solution to fix the oxygen leakage. They had to

The Field Of Ecology And Diversity
Ecology and diversity both focus on the measurable properties of size, types, importance, disparity,
and unevenness. In the field of ecology, the understanding of diversity sophisticates with a
quantitative linguist viewing diversity as a statistical analysis. Whereas, an ecologist state s
diversity as numbered species (Jarvis, 2013). In ecology, all relationship are inversely related to
diversity (Finkel, Early, Fuller, 1998). Identifying a population is a significant step in developing a
definition of diversity and ecology. In this contribution to the definitions of ecology and diversity,
Spellman and Whiting (2007) claims that ecology constitutes an interrelationship of an organism
with its environment. The growth of these organisms may follow changes such that the population
diversifies into other measured organisms. Moreover, diversity is respective to a framework of
attaining a multicultural population of schools. The school s population prospers due to the
implementation of diverse academic disciplines and other aspects of the curriculum (Rodman,
2010). Ecology Haeckel, a German biologist, used the term oecologie , an older spelling ecology
which gives the meaning: management of a household or management of a world of living things
(Ecology, 2009). Karl Marx contended ecology as a metabolism to social interactions with nature,
explaining that there is a necessary metabolic interaction

Efficiency improvement was primarily supported by inventory reduction efforts that, coupled with
increase in accounts payable derived from shifts in timing of payments, reduced the cash
conversion cycle to 43 days. It is worth noting that during fiscal 2012 the balance sheet had an
important growth as a result of the acquisition of the international Yoplait business, including
goodwill and other intangible assets of $2.3 bn USD. Sales growth also benefited from the
acquisition and will be discussed in the next section.
General Mills runs a leveraged operation where, in average, the total assets are 3 times shareholders
equity. Leverage ratio has decreased since 2010 as retained earnings have increased at a faster pace
than assets driven by strong business performance. A slight revamp in the leverage ratio during
fiscal 2012 was mainly driven by an increase in other comprehensive losses related to pensions and
postemployment activity, and foreign currency translation that offset retained earnings for the same
period.
Sustainable growth while generating strong levels of cash flows
General Mills has shown a strong, sustainable growth throughout the last years.
Net sales increase has been driven by a moderate average growth in the US Retail segment (3.8%),
coupled with the expansion in the International business (13.4%). The big year on year increase of

John F Kennedy Informative Speech
John Fitzgerald Kennedy My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask
what you can do for your country. This is a famous quote said by President John Fitzgerald
Kennedy when he was getting to take the oath of holding the potential position during the Inaugural
address. This quote has been an inspiration of an unaccountable number of American lives.
Flashback to November 22,1963, at Dallas, TX, the day of the assassination of President Kennedy,
which was a shocking news international wide. Countless people were brought into tears.
Acknowledging how incredible and amazing that President Kennedy was, what miraculous
accomplishments that he has achieved and what strenuous obstacles that he has overcame in his
lifetime, anybody would be saddened or regretting his decease. John Fitzgerald Kennedy, as known
as Jack Kennedy or simply known for his initials JFK, was the 35th president of the United States.

Defending Beef By Niman Summary
In Defence of livestock Although many researchers believe that our planet s environment and
ecosystems are facing many challenges due to livestock production, proponents of livestock
production believe that the reason why the our environmental condition has worsened is not that we
eat more meat but because we eat less of it. Niman argues that instead of decreasing production, we
should focus on producing meat that is more environmentally sound. She also argues that Feed
production with all its attendant problems of fossil fuel consumption, soil erosion, greenhouse
gases, and chemical pollution can be avoided altogether (Niman, 79). In Defending Beef , she
explicitly criticises the FAO s Livestock s Long Shadow and questions certain statements... Show

There are many different practises and methods available for livestock production, and
ultimately it is the choices that farmers make that determines the production s level of
sustainability. The practices of industrial large scale operations like CAFOs result in both
environmental damage as well as health concerns for humans and animals. Depletion, pollution
and contamination are the biggest obstacles we face when trying to move toward a more
sustainable planet. But when livestock is handled responsibly, with consideration for the
environment and potential consequences, it is indeed possible to produce livestock that is
beneficial for our planet. Organic and grass based farming systems such as silvopastoral systems
have been proven to increase biodiversity, reverse soil erosion and counteract water depletion. By
encouraging farmers to move towards more sustainable methods like these, we can help curb
today s more urgent issues regarding our environment. While there are disagreements between
researchers on how to do this, they all agree that we have to take some kind of action to save our
planet. Possible ways to achieve this include not consuming meat, or buying meat from local,
organic and grass based farmers to ensure the livestock was raised in a responsible way. If more
consumers demanded this type of meat,

Analysis Of I Heard A Fly Buzz When I Died
Emily Dickinson s I heard a Fly buzz when I died describes a death speaker looks back the
moment of his or her death. Using the objects like the storm, the fly and the melancholy of the
people around to express the mood of the speaker, Dickinson reveals that faces the death, the
speaker is afraid at first, but finally, the speaker finds the calmness and peace inside herself or
himself. Like I heard a Fly buzz when I died , After Deathalso addresses a moment before death.
Rossetti uses the death as a compensation of the tragic love He did not love me living; but once

however, Dickinson focus on the change of mood and environment, while... Show more content on

But they gather together to witness the final performance of the speaker.
Then, Dickinson keeps providing the detailed imagery in the room, and shows the people s reaction
to the speaker s death:
The Eyes around had wrung them dry
And Breaths were gathering firm
For that last Onset when the King
Be witnessed in the Room (Dickinson, lines 5 8)
People are sad and sorrow, and maybe they are the speaker s family members and friends. Their
eyes are like sponges, and crying is stretching the tears out of the sponges and had [has] wrung
them dry . Breaths have touchable weight and shape that can be gathered together and get
firmed. Dickinson endows new property to the breath and cry. This provides a vivid picture in
the room like people are sobbing and weeping weakly, and the same feeling as if our audience is
part of the people around the speaker. Then Dickinson describes the mental world of the people.
They are waiting and to witness the King Death in their own eyes.
What does the last moment look like? Is it horrified? Dickinson gives her answer in the last stanza:
With Blue uncertain stumbling Buzz
Between the light and me
And then the Windows failed and then
I could not see to see (Dickinson, lines 13 16)
There are many symbols in this stanza: a light, blue color, a buzz, and windows. I consider the light
is a symbol of heaven and the fly is the speaker s soul because flies have wings just as angles.

Cave of forgotten Dreams In this film, it starts out showing the oldest form of painting which is
close to 32,000 years old. The cave in which it is found is called the Chauvet cave in the south of
France after the original discoverer named Jean Marie Chauvet. In one of the paintings, the bear
that was painted on the wall after the video was paused looked like I could still erase it because it
looked like fresh ink. The scientist could confirm its authenticity because of the material that grew
around the painting would take many years to form. For people that used their fingers, the

Essay on Microsoft-Intuit Synergy Case Report
Microsoft/Intuit Synergies
There is a great deal of synergy between the Microsoft and Intuit that would be beneficial for
Microsoft if an acquisition were to take place. Intuit s position in the personal finance market would
lend a considerable benefit to Microsoft given their difficulty in that market. Microsoft would also
be able to take advantage of the similarity in their products and use their considerable marketing
advantages to enhance the revenue created by Intuit. In 1994, Bill Gates envisioned an emerging
future market as an online marketplace to handle consumer needs. In order for Microsoft to develop
its capability to control its own destiny in online entertainment and commerce, it needed to acquire

It would be important for Microsoft to identify the resources from Intuit necessary to maintain their

developers from Intuit and allowing them access with marketing arm of Microsoft in order to gain
an even greater revenue enhancement.
In order for Microsoft to be able to reach the goals set by Bill Gates, they must use their
considerable resources efficiently to create a place in each market for the online consumer. If they
wish to produce and offer online services such as electronic mail, information data bases, personal
finance management, video on demand, and electronic commerce, then acquiring firms already
specialized in at least some of these areas is the most efficient way to do so. Intuit s products align
with Microsoft s without significant overlap such that the combined firms would provide a
handsome horizontally integrated suite of products with prime market share positions including
word processing (49% market share), spreadsheet (48% market share), tax preparation, accounting,
banking, and bill paying which would all open up the prospect of continued online grazing by the
user leading to repeat sales to Microsoft s video on demand and future entertainment market. The
larger objective would be to capture the user in a web to conduct direct financial transactions over

An Buyer Owner Of The Land
Heidi
Heidi does not have a legal interest in Whitegates as Alex is the sole owner of the land. What must
be established is whether she has an equitable interest in Whitegates that will bind the purchaser
Molly.
The express creation of a trust is not the only method to create a trust. Trusts can be created by
the action of the landowner or by third parties. Heidi acquires an equitable interest in the land
under implied trust due to the deposit she made when Alex purchased the property (Williams
Glynn Bank v Boland (1981) AC 487). When this happens no formalities are imposed such as
registration of the interest (S. 53(2) Law of property Act 1925).
Having established that Heidi has an equitable interest in the property it must be determined how
this interest affects Molly s purchase of the property.
The Land Registration Act 2002 established three categories of third party interests. One of these
categories covers unregistered interests in land which are capable of overriding registered
dispositions such as the purchase of freehold. Heidi s circumstance would be relevant to this
category as her interest is unregistered.
In order to establish whether Heidi has an overriding interest in the property schedule three
paragraph 2 of the Land Registration Act 2002 must be satisfied.
Firstly there must be interest in the land. Heidi s equitable interest has been established by her
contribution to the purchase of the property.
Secondly, Heidi must be in actual occupation

Derek Curtis Bok, not only known for his prominent status of serving as dean of Harvard Law
School, but serving as president of Harvard University for twenty years. Bok wrote a particular
essay named Preparing for a Career in which he discusses both liberal arts and vocational
programs in the education system. In Preparing for a Career Bok s main idea he engraves into the
essay is the fact that vocational and liberal arts program should consolidate into one program to
produce better, prepared, hybrid students. Bok throughout the essay continues to explain the
characteristics liberal arts and vocational programs contain by putting himself in their perspective
views. As Bok s essay progresses so do his views on vocational and liberal arts... Show more

The first point Bok brings up in the vocational program is the fact that the students in vocational
programs are focused on perfecting the competent skills needed in their career. This gives the
students in the vocational program an advantage since they will graduate with the skills needed to
hit the ground running and have a better chance than liberal arts students in acquiring a job. Bok
mentions a downfall about vocational programs in which vocational focuses so much on the skills
students don t learn the essential traditional skills of college. Bok then continues on to give the
liberal arts side of his perspective, in which he states, The most important step that Arts and
Sciences faculties can take is simply to do a better job of achieving the traditional goals of liberal
education (Derek Bok, 42). Bok believes the advantage of liberal arts is the key fact that students
learn the abilities vocational students don t such as communication, critical thinking, problem
solving, self discipline, creativity, and human relation skills. The two disadvantages Bok
mentions is that liberal arts students will have a more difficult time acquiring a job during the
first ten years of work compared to vocational students and liberal arts professors disregard the
need to teach skills that will be learned on the job. Bok has a neutral point

we usually never talk about acting when we hang out. Lots of people at school that I hang out

hockey and dance and school sports, and one is not more important than the other. We are all really
happy for each other when we do well at things and are there for each other when we have tough
times.
What is your advice to other young people who wish to become actors?
My advice would be to take acting classes and do short films to see if you like it! It s different
than most people think. It s hard work and long hours, and you do have to miss out on things if
you have auditions or are filmin,g so you have to love it! My mom made me do about six short
films before she would let me get an agent!

Benefits And Costs Of Extracurricular Activities Essay
INTRODUCTION
More than half of American teenagers attending school participate in some type of extracurricular
activities (Gardner, Roth and Brooks Gunn, 2006). Extracurricular activities can include sports,
journalism, drama or theater, art or music, youth groups, student council, and clubs. Today about
one in four students participate in academics clubs (Miller Zittleman, 2012). Since extracurricular
activities are so popular among students, it is important to understand the pros and cons of engaging
in extracurricular activities.
The purpose of this literature review is to examine the benefits and costs of extracurricular
activities. First, I discuss how participating in extracurricular activities benefits students. Among the
benefits I discuss are academic performance, enhanced self esteem, and respectful behavior.
Secondly, I will discuss the cost of participating in extracurricular activities. The costs I discuss are
time management, and expenses.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITES Students who participate in extracurricular activities usually
benefit from the many opportunities granted to them (Israel 2010). More than half of American

  • 2. A Comparison Of The Five Characters In The Catcher In The Rye Today I m dining with 5 characters from the novel The Catcher in the Rye, who I consider close friends; the characters are Holden Caulfield, Ackley, Jane Gallagher, Phoebe Caulfield, and Stradlater. By the end of our Chinese dinner we all received a fortune cookie! The first to open their fortune cookieswas Holden. His fortunesaid, Don t be unreal, this is only appropriate for Holden because throughout the book he struggles with accepting reality and learning how to cooperate with it. Ackley struggles to open his fortune cookie, but he got there. His fortune said, Lying is always your first choice, but it will become your last resort once you become the lie yourself. This made complete sense considering Ackley was always lying about his sexual encounters; he kept his message to himself. Jane opens hers to see a surprise, You know you re respected and loved, embrace it. Jane is one of the few people Holden enjoys. This gave a hint to Jane, it left her puzzled. Phoebe, Holden s younger sister opened her fortune cookie with a sly look on her face. She read her fortune aloud, Sunshine. She got this message because her innocence would be the sunlight to Holden s day. Soon the sexy bastard (a nickname Holden gave to his roommate Stradlater) at the table got to his fortune cookie. The fortune cookie said, Gross. Stradlater is embarrassed and decides not to share his fortune with the table. This fortune was accurate because he is very unhygienic at Home. Everyone ... • 3. Michael Kimmel s Manhood In America In Michael Kimmel s Manhood in America: A Cultural History , he provides a broad, heavily researched cultural history of the development of manhood and the definition of masculinity throughout American history. Beginning in the 19th century and ending in the present day administration of Barack Obama, Kimmel identifies that over time society has demanded more and more that the common manbe self made . Kimmel s overall goal in writing this book is to introduce a new concept of masculinitythat eliminates the battle that every man faces when trying to achieve so called manhood . He explores the natural instincts that men have and how these instincts are affected by self control, the surrounding environment, and overall levels of happiness. Starting in the 19th century, men had an increasing pressure to prove their masculinity. In order to support themselves and their families, American men s desire to prove masculinity came at the cost of minorities, women, and even man s own personal happiness. This restlessness of being a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In my opinion, man s instinct to prove his masculinity, desire for competition, and longing to reach manhood is natural and cannot be changed. Overtime, this natural instinct has decreased and increased as the environment has changed. The anger sparked by progressivism in the workforce brought out this instinct in American men in the 19th century, while further institutions promoting manliness continued to evolve in the 20th century. In modern day, people such as myself who believe that everyone should have equal opportunity keeps the instinct of proving my manhood in check. However, if there weren t conservative men in our country who have this anger against other groups and have the desire to prove their masculinity, America would appear weak in the eyes of countries who have more masculine ... • 4. The Unbearable Lightness Of Being By Milan Kundera People attempt to find comfort in aligning themselves to certain polar values, whether they are things like good or bad, order or chaos, or even political values such as liberal or conservative. In these values people assign for themselves, they are searching for contentment, but within every human is a battle between the two sides these two sides are lightness and weight. The Unbearable Lightness of Beingby Milan Kunderadepicts this feud in the lives of 4 tragic protagonists: Tomas, Tereza, Franz, and Sabina. These four are in a constant feud between lightness and weight, and only removing the veil of these human abstractions can lead towards a path for contentment. The Unbearable Lightness of Being depicts this battle existing in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Franz, too, experiences a conflict with his weight. He falls deeply for Sabina after leaving his child and wife, and his affair soon becomes the most weighty thing in his life. Yet when he met Sabina at the airport. As the plane gained altitude, he felt lighter and lighter. At last, he said to himself, he was living in truth (114). Even if the lightness is just something he wants to experience and he is not truly living in lightness, he is still fighting to become light. Franz has a deep desire to be like Sabina, and he worships her for the lightness she possesses and he lacks. Kundera discusses the idea of the struggle for lightness and weight existing in the real world as well. Yakov Stalin, the son of Joseph Stalin, experienced the highest degree of this internal conflict: Rejection and privilege, happiness and woe no one felt more concretely than Yakov how interchangeable opposites are, how short the step from one pole of human existence to the other (244). Kundera notes that the poles of lightness and weight are dizzyingly close, and it is this dizziness that drives Yakov to try to kill himself. The conflict inside him is so uncomfortable that he sees the need to end his life just to stop it. This proves that lightness and weight, rather than allowing people to find contentment, only drives people further away from it. The way an individual aligns ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. A Generation Of The Workplace A Generation Lost In the Workplace Denise Gelina Columbia College A Generation Lost In the Workplace The workplace is ever changing. There are currently four generations in the work environment today, and because of longer life expectancies it will soon by five as the youngest generation enters the workforce joining the current four. Generational transitions in the work environment cause the shift of power to be handed from one generation to the next. These transitions are complex but they have never bypassed a generation. Today s workplace is overlooking an entire generation, that generation is Generation X. Current power holders, Boomers, are bypassing Generation X and handing the reins to Millennials. Failing to utilize Generation X is a mistake, and managers can maximize employees my utilizing this overlooked sector of the workforce. Generations The oldest generation in the workforce is the Greatest Generation or also known as Traditionalist (born prior to 1946) ( Mixing and Managing Four Generations of Employees FDU ). They came of age during the great depression, the start of the cold war to be seen and not heard (MU Extension). Believing in a work ethic of loyalty, tenure, and quietly working hard gets rewarded. While some are still employed full, and it seems will never retire, many have handed off the reins to Baby Boomers. Guantanamo has been a topic of debate since the first 20 detainees arrived; should the facility close or remain open? Guantanamo detention facility should remain open because it does not entice terrorist to strike, the prison is not used enough, detainees who were sent back to their home countries have returned to terrorism, and the prisoners were not treated poorly at the facility. Critics of Guantanamo say it serves as a potent propaganda tool for the Islamic State, which makes the prisoners it captures wear orange jumpsuits, nearly identical to those worn by Guantanamo inmates. Of those sent to other countries, 214 are known or suspected to have returned to terrorist or insurgent activities. Critics of Congress, however, worry that some of the transferees have returned to the fight and killed Americans. According to American officials who spoke to a Washington Post reporter on condition of anonymity, a former Guantanamo detainee who was transferred to Libya in 2007 only to be released the following year was likely involved in the Sept. 11, 2012, attack on the American embassy compound in Benghazi that killed U.S. ambassador J. • 7. Describe The Maximisation Of Anticoagulation Of... (Karmiova, 2001) and is predictive of subsequent multiple organ failure, infection and than eventually death in these patients. These conditions have many features common with sepsis. Blood concentrations of various cytokines, soluble receptors and endotoxins increase within as early as 3 hours after cardiac arrest, the magnitude of these changes is associated with the outcome. Activation of blood coagulation without adequate activation of endogenous fibrinolysis is an important pathophysiological mechanism that may contribute to microcirculatory reperfusion disorders (BГ¶ttiger, 1995). For patients that undergo CPR and achieve ROSC, their coagulation /anticoagulation and fibrinolysis/antifibrinolsis systems are activated. Anticoagulant factors such as antithrombin, protein S and protein C are decreased and this decrease is associated with transient increases in endogenous activated protein C after resuscitation (Adrie,2005). The stress of total body oxygen debt also affects adrenal production and function. Although patients have increased plasma cortisol levels they have a relative adrenal insufficiency defined as failure to respond to corticotrophin. This failure to respond causes the adrenal cortex to not be stimulated to secrete the hormones necessary to respond to stress. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Feral Children Essay The Wild Children Child: Oxana Malaya The definition of the word feral children is undomesticated children. It has been a proven case that young children cannot survive on their own in the wild they are merely adopted by animals that choose to love them and want to help the children and teach them their way of life. An animal can sense when they re in danger but when these children pose no threat all they want is devotion, love, protection they didn t receive from the parents or guardians that abounded them. I know I can never forgive my parents for what they did to me Oxana was told she had no parents by the doctor but later was told the truth. Oxana Malaya has a great deal of devotion to the dogs because they saved her life. Some situations trigger her back to when she lived with dogs and how she used to crawl on all fours. British psychologist and expert on wild children, Lyn Fry, went to see Oxana Malaya with a film crew (channel 4) at the Baraboy Clinic where she was living. It was dirty, terribly rundown and primitive but in the Ukrainian terms, very desirable. Her carers are good people and with the best interest of their charges of heart, though there is no therapy as such. Oxana Malaya is doing things she loves Lyn Fry studied Oxana with day to day human interaction and how she processed new information in a socialised environment. She doesn t have the social or personal skills. She has had boyfriends but she doesn t have the ability to form a long term relationship or to understand give and take. She would rather fall out then compromise. She is a very vulnerable person and there is no protection outside that institution Lyn Fry reported. She made a very striking impression on me. • 11. The Assassination Of President John F. Kennedy Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable. JFK was a man defined by his morality, however his appeasing methods were perceived by some as a weakness, ultimately preluding his inescapable death. It is to a highly significant extent that the CIA was responsible for the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, as contrasting ideologies, acting as motive, integrated with extensive influence and power, enabled the CIA to eliminate JFK, to infiltrate their own desired means of governing. as an impediment of desired governing. Uncertainty of motives, corresponding with former connections to the CIA, generated hesitation for the solitary conviction of Lee Harvey Oswald. Complications concerning domestic and international incidents instigated tensions between the CIA and President Kennedy, later acting as an apparent motive cause for his assassination. We are all familiar with the stories of suffragettes burning their bras, and environmental enthusiasts breaking into labs and liberating rats back to the wild. But what caused women to abruptly rip of their pinnies, tell dad dinner s in the dog and start running around without appropriate underwear? What caused contented homemakers to leave the cosy warmth of their gas fires in favour of chaining themselves to trees? And are such people an eccentric minority, or have they profoundly affected the way we live and think in the western world today? All movements engage in at least some action outside of the institutional or legal channels of political access. (Lovenduski and Norris, 1996). There is a diverse range of NSMs fighting for causes from the environment to women to the elderly to the blacks. For the purposes of this essay I will inspect only a couple in detail, but it should be retained that they are examples of a bigger wave. Two of the best known movements are the environmental or Green movement, and the Women s movement. Both have evolved over the past hundred years into strong and extremely influential political leagues. Both have the ideological aspect, wanting to change the general public s approach to their respective causes the environment and equality between sexes. They also have the organisational factor, with now impressive and far reaching channels of communication. And finally they have the tactical factor, having utilized many different methods of expressing and arguing their opinions. • 15. The Dangers Of Social Pressure The Dangers of Relenting to Social Pressure From early childhood to adulthood, the urge to submit to social pressure is a reality that shapes everyone on a daily basis. The desire to meet societal expectations is a factor that greatly impacts decision making from fashion sense, to choosing friends, and to making the right choices in the work force. Many times, this desire for acceptance repudiates one s beliefs and innate senses. In Opinions and Social Pressure by Solomon Asch, and Perils of Obedience by Stanley Milgram, the two psychologists conduct a series of experiments to observe how the influence of social pressure leads to conformity and obedience to authority. Both experiments demonstrate the adverse effects of social pressure, for conformity involves a sacrifice of self interests, while blind obedience to authority results in the harm of others. According to the results of the experiments, social pressure is a force that can cause people to act outside of their personal convictions and moral conscience. In Asch s experiment, he gathers a group of seven to nine male college students, to participate in a psychological experiment in visual judgment experiment in order to observe the time it would take for a subject to yield to social pressure (Asch 9). The period from the late 19th century to the early 20th century is important in the urban development history of Canadian and American. Urbanization is a historical process that contains urban development. Urbanization is a process of population concentration as well as a process that advanced production modes substitute backward modes. Hence, urbanization is a dynamic process that many aspects of economics, society and culture comprehensively transform caused by the revolution of social productive forces. The urban population boost resulted in various benefits. Immigration is a main propelling force to urbanization. It also propelled optimization of the urban population structure, shaped the characteristics of urban residence, and also formed civic multicultural style and features. In my opinion, immigration benefits and promotes urbanization in Vancouver and New York from 1860 to 1920. Canada s urbanization was inherently and closely related with that of Europe and North America. Local factors and communities elite played a significant role in the development of Canada s cities (especially in western part). Britain, who had control over Ireland at this time, did very little to help the now starving and poor Irish. Many of the Irish that didn t die from these diseases did die from starvation. Seeing as the potato was main source of nutrition for many Irish people, many became malnourished. Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811 1896) was the most popular American writer of the 19th century. Her use of literary realism merges with the writings of Howells, Twain, and Crane (Reuben). Harriet Beecher Stowe s writings were influenced by her religious and moral beliefs. She left a long lasting impact on the American Renaissance time period due to her puritan style of writing. Stowe was born in Litchfield, Connecticut in 1811. Her mother, Roxana Foote Beecher, was a well educated and artistic granddaughter of a Revolutionary War general, and Lyman Beecher, a Presbyterian minister with a strong interest in Puritan theology. Stowe grew up in a household in which religion, reading and writing were considered a major part of childhood. After the Stowes moved to Brunswick, in 1850, Harriet considered writing about slavery. The passage of the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850, that made all citizens responsible for upholding the idea of slavery, turned her into an activist. Stowe was established as a major American writer in the late 1850 s. Once Stowe moved, she began writing regularly for The Atlantic Monthly. As the amount of genetically modified (GM) crops have increased rapidly in recent years, the debates on whether GM foods are truly beneficial or not have become prevalent. Scientists around the world are making their sentiments known. Over eight hundred scientists around the world signed an open letter to all governments, the UN, the World Trade Organization, and the U.S. Congress calling for a ban on genetically modified organisms, seeds, and foods (Batalion). The major drawbacks include allergies, decreased nutritional value, increased toxicity, and antibiotic resistance ( Harmful Effects of the Agent ). First, because genetically modified organisms are created through a mixture of various genes from other organisms that might cause an allergic reaction, consuming these products poses as a threat to the individuals who have serious allergic reactions. Theoretically, the genetically modified foods have low nutrition because of the gene modification process. For instance, genetically modified soybeans produce fewer phytoestrogen compounds, chemicals that keep the heart healthy, than the traditional soybeans (Batalion). Third, from animals to humans, all organisms that consume genetically modified organisms, which usually contain antibiotic resistant genes, could develop tolerance to antibiotics due to excessive exposure. On the other hand, detrimental bacteria and viruses could also develop resistance to the antibiotics in the future, making humans more vulnerable. There were parts in the movie where one of the members had got frustrated and started arguing with another member. The third member had to calm them down. If they were not to calm down, things could have got messed up and unwanted situations or hazards could have happened. Observing the interactions between the engineers at the mission control center, one could see that they are an important aspect of the journey. What must be established is whether she has an equitable interest in Whitegates that will bind the purchaser Molly. The express creation of a trust is not the only method to create a trust. Trusts can be created by the action of the landowner or by third parties. Heidi acquires an equitable interest in the land under implied trust due to the deposit she made when Alex purchased the property (Williams Glynn Bank v Boland (1981) AC 487). When this happens no formalities are imposed such as registration of the interest (S. 53(2) Law of property Act 1925). The Land Registration Act 2002 established three categories of third party interests. One of these categories covers unregistered interests in land which are capable of overriding registered dispositions such as the purchase of freehold. Heidi s circumstance would be relevant to this category as her interest is unregistered. • 53. Derek Curtis Bok Derek Curtis Bok, not only known for his prominent status of serving as dean of Harvard Law School, but serving as president of Harvard University for twenty years. Bok wrote a particular essay named Preparing for a Career in which he discusses both liberal arts and vocational programs in the education system. In Preparing for a Career Bok s main idea he engraves into the essay is the fact that vocational and liberal arts program should consolidate into one program to produce better, prepared, hybrid students. Bok throughout the essay continues to explain the characteristics liberal arts and vocational programs contain by putting himself in their perspective views. As Bok s essay progresses so do his views on vocational and liberal arts... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first point Bok brings up in the vocational program is the fact that the students in vocational programs are focused on perfecting the competent skills needed in their career. This gives the students in the vocational program an advantage since they will graduate with the skills needed to hit the ground running and have a better chance than liberal arts students in acquiring a job. Bok mentions a downfall about vocational programs in which vocational focuses so much on the skills students don t learn the essential traditional skills of college. Bok then continues on to give the liberal arts side of his perspective, in which he states, The most important step that Arts and Sciences faculties can take is simply to do a better job of achieving the traditional goals of liberal education (Derek Bok, 42). Bok believes the advantage of liberal arts is the key fact that students learn the abilities vocational students don t such as communication, critical thinking, problem solving, self discipline, creativity, and human relation skills. The two disadvantages Bok mentions is that liberal arts students will have a more difficult time acquiring a job during the first ten years of work compared to vocational students and liberal arts professors disregard the need to teach skills that will be learned on the job. The kids I m around, including myself, do other things like hockey and dance and school sports, and one is not more important than the other. We are all really happy for each other when we do well at things and are there for each other when we have tough times. What is your advice to other young people who wish to become actors? My advice would be to take acting classes and do short films to see if you like it! It s different than most people think. It s hard work and long hours, and you do have to miss out on things if you have auditions or are filmin,g so you have to love it! My mom made me do about six short films before she would let me get an agent! What do you like to do in your free time? I love hanging out with my friends, going to my grandparents cottage and travelling! I also take dance classes jazz and hip hop. Living in Vancouver is awesome because there is so much to do!
