The document discusses how Brexit will negatively impact the UK's macroeconomy. Brexit refers to the UK leaving the European Union. Leaving the EU will cause the UK to exit free trade agreements, breaking many of the regulations and legal structures underpinning the British economy. This will lead to economic volatility as trade that makes up 80% of the UK's worldwide commerce will be disrupted. Specific issues that may arise include a drop in foreign investment, a weakened British pound, and rising inflation.
This document summarizes key debates around equality and technology. It discusses how technologies are developed within social contexts, reflecting social values, and how they can exacerbate inequalities. Specific debates outlined include how context matters for technology use; the need for diverse perspectives in technology design; how technologies have social effects; and how technologies reflect the views of their creators. Examples discussed are an AI hiring tool that showed gender bias, risk assessment algorithms that displayed racial disparities, and how review platforms like Yelp may influence gentrification.
AI should be Fair, Accountable and Transparent (FAT* AI), hence it's crucial to raise awareness among these topics not only among machine learning practitioners but among the entire population, as ML systems can take life-changing decisions and influence our lives now more than ever.
This document provides instructions for requesting and completing an assignment writing request through the HelpWriting.net platform. It outlines a 5-step process: 1) Create an account; 2) Complete an order form with instructions and deadline; 3) Review bids from writers and select one; 4) Review the completed paper and authorize payment; 5) Request revisions if needed, with the guarantee of a refund for plagiarized work.
The documents discuss the balance between AI and human workers. By 2021, AI assistants are forecast to handle 85% of customer service queries at just 10% of the cost of live agents. However, humans still provide skills like empathy, ethics and complex decision making that AI cannot replace. When used as augmentation rather than replacement, AI can help humans perform tasks faster and improve outcomes. An experiment found that including AI bots in a coordination game improved overall human performance, particularly during difficult tasks. For the future, organizations must view digital transformation as both a technology and people journey to create new jobs and reskill employees as roles evolve with new technologies.
The document provides an overview of the keynote presentation titled "Datafication of Higher Education: Considering an ethical approach to enhancing the student experience" given by Paul Prinsloo at the University of Stirling.
The presentation discusses several issues related to the collection, analysis, and use of student data in higher education, including: (1) broken/incomplete data, (2) outdated categories that do not accurately reflect reality, and (3) potential biases in algorithms. It emphasizes the need to consider these issues and approach student data through a framework of data justice and ethics. The presentation also reviews several principles and examples of addressing ethics in learning analytics from 2013 to 2017.

Ender Wiggin is transformed from a shy, lonely 6-year-old into a mature 12-year-old through his intense military training at Battle School, where he faces challenges that force him to grow up quickly in order to strategize battles and command armies, experiences which significantly accelerate his psychological and emotional development beyond his years.
Recently, Boston Dynamics launched a video of dancing robots. Some humans couldn't accept as true with what they had been seeing. It regarded extra like a Pixar animation than actual footage.

In the next 10 years, smart machines will augment humans in many tasks like assisting doctors, fighting in battles, manufacturing, and assisting in various professions. While machines will replace humans in some routine tasks, the partnership between humans and machines will build on our respective strengths. Humans have advantages in tasks requiring thinking, creativity, social/emotional skills, and improvisation, while machines are better suited for repetitive, dangerous, large/small-scale, and data-driven tasks. An optimal partnership is emerging where humans and machines collaborate to achieve more than either could alone.
This document discusses why asking users directly is not always the best approach to understanding user needs and wants. It provides several examples from studies that show users have difficulty accurately reporting on and predicting their own past, current and future behaviors, needs and preferences. The document argues that because of biases like recall bias, focalism and an inability to imagine future contexts, users don't always know what they have done, are doing, will do, want or need. Therefore, relying solely on directly asking users can lead product developers to make incorrect assumptions.

The document discusses how social media use can potentially get someone fired if inappropriate or personal information is posted online. It notes that posting too much personal information can create a negative impression, while explicitly inappropriate content like cursing or photos with alcohol can lead to losing one's job. The document also addresses how some students delete inappropriate posts before applying to colleges but others do not see an issue with leaving them up.

The demand for pecans in China has rapidly increased due to economic growth. This has caused challenges for producers in meeting the rising demand. At the initial price, the quantity demanded exceeds the quantity supplied in China. Suppliers respond by increasing exports to China, shifting the supply curve outward. This creates a short-term excess supply until prices adjust downward and a new market equilibrium is reached between Chinese demand and supply. The increased exports to China also cause an equal downward shift in the supply curve in the American pecan market.
In our research, we work to understand how people feel about the expansion of robots in different employment areas, and what factors influence their feelings. Mainly we aim to discover what factors influence people‟s opinions on robots.
The widely publicized views about robotics and artificial intelligence come to opposite conclusions. One being the idea that increased development of artificial intelligence and robots may lead to a situation of mass unemployment. The other more optimistic one being that the fear of job loss is unwarranted because a displacement and reposition of employment is what will ensue. There are also more contemporary views such as the following, to accelerate the development of robots and AI while maintaining employment opportunities at the same time, it is necessary to upgrade human capital.
The results of our research show that males have a more positive view about robots than females. People who found out about robots via scientific readings are also more likely to have a positive opinion about them than those who found out about robots via media. Furthermore, people who were personally exposed to robots or who had heard about them from friends are less likely to have a negative opinion about them than those who found out the information via scientific readings. The results also show that the more interested a person is in science and technology, the more likely he or she will have a positive view of robots.
We did not discover significant correlation between peoples‟ view about robots and their country of origin, also their age was not a significant determinate. We included further descriptive questions in our study pertaining to where respondents believe robots should be used as well as where robots should not be used. The majority of responses were in the fields of manufacturing and education. From this we draw that as of now, most people cannot accept the use of robots within social interaction due to either personal fears or lack of trust.
The document discusses how Mark Twain portrayed slaves in his works. It argues that Twain failed to show sympathy for slaves or accurately portray black people. He used stereotypes and fetishization rather than developing complex characters. While Twain wrote important stories, questions remain about whether he truly understood the African American experience or subtly expressed racist views in his writing.
This document summarizes a case study of the Urban Company platform, which connects customers with domestic workers in India. The study examines the platform's design through a technical walkthrough and interviews with workers. Key findings include:
1) The platform design positions customers as the primary users and workers as independent contractors, but the reality of service delivery is more complex.
2) Features like only providing the customer app in English and marketing materials depicting large homes assume privileged customers and cast traditional domestic work as unskilled.
3) Metrics, ratings, and other design elements aim to exert control over workers and standardize services, but can also be "gamed" by workers to actually do their jobs.

1. Every decision made about information is a filter that shapes reality. When classifying or structuring information, professionals are asserting power over what information is organized and how.
2. No information filter is neutral - they all reflect biases and choices about what to include or exclude. Indigenous communities have suffered from biased filters in colonial archives, so tools like Mukurtu are being developed through community partnerships.
3. Professionals have a responsibility over the power of information filters and must ensure biases are not amplified to disempower groups. While machines can help, humans cannot outsource accountability for information outcomes and consequences.

This document discusses Kristen Stewart's relationship with her girlfriend Alicia Cargile and her previous relationship with Soko. It reports that Soko is not bitter about Stewart dating Cargile and has no plans to write a breakup song about Stewart. A source close to Soko says she is busy promoting her films and will return to working on her music after promotions are over, with a new record planned for March 2017. The source indicates Soko's relationship with Stewart was too short for her to write a song about, so Stewart and her fans do not need to worry about a bitter breakup ballad from Soko.

The results are discussed and implications for management are considered.
William Apess's essay "An Indian's Looking-Glass for the White Man" critiques white society's treatment of Native Americans. Apess declares that Indians and whites are equal under God, then builds tension by expressing his sense of betrayal by the white culture he was raised in. Throughout the essay, Apess adopts a preacher-like tone to boldly challenge white behavior, which he argues contradicts the peace and equality their God promotes.

The document discusses how characteristics of the metaverse (MV) can provide valuable insights for developing marketing strategy. It proposes that MV realms with more sophisticated capabilities that allow a wide range of activities, operate at large scales and support diverse interactions will generate more comprehensive datasets. Additionally, MV realms that facilitate customization and ubiquitous access in a way that can record rich behavioral data in real-time and enable low-cost experimentation are likely to produce datasets most useful for gaining customer insights.

Navjot Sawhney created The Washing Machine Project to provide an affordable and portable washing machine for refugees. This would improve health by making washing clothes easier, and free up time for education. The project aims to serve those in need while operating on a small budget. Experts Dr. Manoj Dora and Dr. Ana Canhoto discuss how the project can broaden its market by serving other customer segments, attract volunteers through a sense of purpose, and gain sponsors by demonstrating business benefits of partnerships.
The document discusses coping with failures in chatbot-enabled customer service. It summarizes that customers have high expectations for chatbots but chatbots have limitations in their capabilities. The study found that customers were dissatisfied when chatbots lacked empathy, had limited assistance abilities, or lost information in handovers to humans. Customers responded to failures by avoiding further chatbot use or switching providers. The implications are that companies should recognize chatbot limitations, manage expectations, and make it clear when customers are interacting with a chatbot rather than a human.

Opportunities and challenges for brands in a digital worldAna Canhoto
The document discusses opportunities and challenges for brands in the digital world. It notes that the online environment is information rich, lacking physical clues, witnessing innovation, rich in user data, global, and uncertain. To become a trusted brand, companies must actively engage customers, understand their expectations, and have real-time interactions. However, technology interactions can be frustrating for customers. The document also discusses managing social media crises, leveraging positive customer experiences and reviews, incentivizing customer engagement, and creating brand communities.
Advertising through word-of-mouth can positively reinforce brands, persuade more people and nudge consumers while potentially risking boycotts. Creating buzz around ads can spread brand awareness further as people pass on the advertising, with benefits including reinforcement, persuasion and nudging but also potential downsides like boycotts.
A colleague asked me to a run a session for her students, about how they could use social media to assist with their job search.
We started by talking about the decision to hire someone, and how complex it is… a bit like their decision to buy a skiing holiday.
Then, we turned our attention to understanding what information the employer is looking for.
Finally, we looked at how different platforms might help them showcase their strengths, motivation, and cultural fit. First, what they must do to stand a chance – check what their current online presence is telling prospective employers, and build their LinkedIn profiles. Then, what they can do to enhance their profile.

What stops customers complaining to youAna Canhoto

This presentation discusses the 3 most common barriers stopping an unhappy customer from complaining directly to you.
3 reasons to embrace negative customer feedbackAna Canhoto
The document discusses 3 reasons companies should embrace negative customer feedback:
1. It provides insight into problems customers are having and their expectations, even if the issues are not necessarily the company's fault.
2. It allows the company to address complaints and potentially regain dissatisfied customers, many of whom will repurchase if issues are resolved.
3. Early negative feedback can still increase sales for a new mass product by providing social proof of its adoption to other customers despite sentiment, which increases the product's visibility and impact.

Total Women & Money
In contrast, women were more likely than men to be
shown in a leisure setting. Twice the proportion of
women as men were pictured with a hot drink, either
in a café or at home. Women are more frequently
depicted next to pot plants than men, often with
flowers (if a man is pictured with a plant – it’s more
likely a cactus!). Professor Kanji told us that such
homely images further reinforce the messages of
fragility and nurturing – that women’s proper place
is in the home.
Women are more frequently depicted
next to pot plants than men
Summary Report: Gendered representations of money in visual media, a study 7
likely to have a visibly happy woman pictured (56%
women versus 40% men) – which could normalise
and sanitise indebtedness. The positive emotion
associated with women contrasts with the depiction
of men absorbing the strain. Only a few images show
women worrying about finance – and then mostly in
dramatic fashion, with comedically over-the-top facial
expressions commonplace.
Finally, the behaviour and role of men and women
in money images is intertwined with stereotypes.
Men are active decision makers and women are
passive onlookers, making basic decisions or no
decision at all.
Typically, men are shown paying bills, making
purchases, deals or even confidently flaunting their
money. Women’s behaviour is weighted towards
saving coins into a piggy bank.
In two of the three main image libraries, paper money
was missing from ‘women and money’ images and
the photographs in the image library that did picture
women with notes were comedic, with the women
sporting dramatic poses or shocked expressions.
In some cases, women simply watch on as a man
handles the finances. Sometimes they’re not even
engaged at all, suggesting ignorance or a lack of
interest in money matters.
Women are often delighted to secure
a loan, or patronisingly befuddled when
it comes to battling debt

Larger datasets are not necessarily less biased

Hofmann et al (2024):
7. Our AI lives are ruled by a handful of datasets
• Developing training datasets is time- and labour-intensive, and requires
access to unique or privileged data (e.g., self-driving car logs)
• Koch et al (2021): Evidence of increasing concentration in fewer and fewer,
publicly available, training
datasets*, across various
task communities

8. Rigidity of algorithms vs fluidity of human behaviour
- Report by the National Transportation
Safety Board re: the fatal crash by an
Uber self-driving vehicle:
- The car detected Herzberg with more than
enough time to stop.
- When the car first detected her presence, 5.6
seconds before impact, it classified her as a
vehicle, then other, then vehicle, then other,
then bicycle, then other, then back to bicycle.
- It never guessed Herzberg was on foot for a
simple, galling reason: Uber didn’t tell its car
to look for pedestrians outside of
crosswalks.
- “The system design did not include a
consideration for jaywalking pedestrians,”

9. Hidden assumptions in algorithmic decision making
- Unless data are unambiguously
linked to the outcome, we need
to make assumptions
- Assumptions about the whole
become reality for the individual.
- E.g., A-levels algorithm*
- School’s past performance, class
size, …

13. The widening digital literacy gap
• Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation (CDEI)1: There is almost no
awareness of the use of algorithms (in the public sector)
• Gran et al (2021)2:
• Lack of awareness of algorithms as the new reinforced digital divide
• If people are not aware that algorithms are being used in a certain environment,
they can’t deploy the skills to navigate that environment
