Gun Ownership and Gun Control in Canada Essay
Gun Ownership and Gun Control in Canada
The Oscar won documentary Bowling for Columbine has aroused people s awareness of gun
ownership and gun control issues. Should gun ownership be banned or should guns be controlled?
Does gun ownership create a violent society? The answer is not measurable, however, from the
firearm situation between America and Canada, the answer is more obvious. America probably has
the highest rate of gun ownership in the world. In Canada, the percentage of Canadian households
with a rifle is approximately equal to the level in United States. According to the statistics of gun
murder rates around the world from Bowling for columbine , America has 11,127 gun ... Show more

Despite having one of the highest rates of gun ownerships, Canada actually has the lowest crime
rate in the world. Well, a uniform federal firearms control system seems far more important than the
number of gun ownership. In order to reduce the availability of guns, strict regulations should be
addressed. Any occupant who conditionally needs a gun should acquire a certificate from both the
police and doctors. Personal and medical details of gun owner should be honestly provided.
According to the gun control system established in Canada, Canadians who wish to purchase a gun
must acquire a Firearm Acquisition Certificate from the police. In order to obtain a Firearms
Acquisition Certificate, am applicant must provide identification and background information,
including addresses for the past five years. Unlike some American states, applicants are not
acquired to supply medical information to the police.
Apart from applying for gun certificates, the restriction of uses of certain guns should be
regulated so as to ensure no collateral effect. For example, the Canadian FAC system includes
control of restricted weapons and prohibited weapons. Restricted weapons must be stored only in
one s home or place of business depending on terms of the registration certificate. Prohibited
weapons, such as shotguns, sawed off rifles and silencers are absolutely illegal in Canada. In

Cannibalism Among Neanderthals
Cannibalism is the practice of humans eating the flesh of other humans. The word comes from
the word Canibales. It is the Spanish name for Caribs, a tribe who practiced cannibalism in the
Lesser Antilles. But why do groups practice this? Is it a religious or ritual tradition, a warfare
custom, or simply done out of necessity? There is no one answer to this question, so in this paper I
will try to analyze some different explanations for this. Cannibalismhas been practiced all over the
world and may have been practiced for tens of thousands of years. There are bones from Homo
sapiens that have marks where flesh was cut off that go back 600,000 years. Cannibalism among
Neanderthals is thought to have taken place because of food shortages and... Show more content on

The group got delayed and stranded by early snow when following a new route through Utah.
Out of 87 members, 48 were finally able to make it to California after resorting to cannibalism
for survival. This is one of the most well known examples of cannibalism being used out of
necessity. Another example is the shipwreck of the Essex whaler. A sperm whale attacked and
sunk the ship in 1820. Survivors were stranded for 95 days at sea and were forced to eat five of
the dead crewmembers. Eventually, the men had to draw straws of who would sacrifice
themselves and be eaten. Seven more crewmen were cannibalized until the remaining eight men
were rescued. Tribal societies most commonly practice the act of cannibalism, and can sometimes
be seen as a cultural norm. This is usually done for rituals. Some tribes eat the flesh of dead tribe
members to help the dead person s soul navigate into living offspring. This is an example of endo
cannibalism, where people are consumed within the tribe, usually part of a grieving process.
During wartime, enemies might be eaten to glorify a victory. In Melanesia, enemies might have
been eaten to insult their people. Some groups think eating the flesh of another person would give
them that person s characteristics. An example of a cannibalistic tribe is the Korowai

The city Las Vegas, Nevada was founded in 1905, with about 110 acres of land that became useful
for downtown Vegas. The city was the driving force in the creation of Clark County, Nevadain 1909

expected to be 618,956.99. The life expectancy in Las Vegas depended on the zip code of the
area that the people lived in. During the World War II, the city had experienc3ed a rapid

Some people who have enough courage shave all their hair off to raise money for cancer patients
and all that money is goes to one of their loved ones or a complete stranger . Also people who
shave their hair for cancer must have great courage to do this generous thing to help one person .
But some are actually going through a similar thing because cancer patients loose hair from
chemotherapy and people shave hair for cancer.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is a treatment to fight against cancer but some people who go through
chemotherapy start to loose . People with cancer who start chemotherapy* start to loose hair within
a month . People who have chemotherapy start to lose hair in chunks after radiation therapy and

Hip Hop Dichotomy Essay
Tracing the Rap/Hip Hop Dichotomy in Popular and Underground Music Rap music has
experienced a radical increase in popularity in the last five years. In the year 2000, rap became
the second best selling genre in music, capturing 12.9 percent of the year s $14.3 billion in total
record sales ( Rap/Hip Hop Sc 1). Though rap is no stranger to criticism, that criticism has increased
in both quantity and vociferousness at about the same rate as the number of rap albums climbing
the charts. And the growing evidence that, apparently, in order to achieve commercial success, each
rap album must be more negative and offensive than the last does not help to address these
criticisms. Unfortunately, the critics miss most of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The genre s performers and audience were predominantly black in its early phases, though there
was a significant Latino minority (Smitherman Sc 1), and it originated as the response of these
marginalized groups to the commercial music of the period. Afrika Bambaataa, one of hip hop s
founders and leader of the Zulu Nation (a hip hop clique), once said, The Bronx wasn t into
radio music no more....Hip hop was against the disco that was being played on the radio (Stern
412). The hip hop community also developed responses to other aspects of disco culture:
Athletic gear in place of leisure suits and breakdancing in place of disco dancing. Graffiti art also
became intertwined with hip hop early on, and the music became a celebration of the three art
forms that comprise hip hop culture graffiti, break dancing, and the music itself (Smitherman Sc
1, Costello 22). The mid 1980 s saw the rise to marginal mainstream popularity of rap groups like
Run DMC and the Beastie Boys, who drew criticism for their relaxed treatment of sex, violence
and, in the case of the Beastie Boys, drugs. Indeed they had, if not lost sight of the music s original
aims completely, at least added these seemingly incongruous elements to it. Then, in 1989, hip hop

The poem The Tyger by William Blake
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men liberally, and upbraids not, and
it shall be given to him. These wise words of King James verse (1:5) of the bible portrays an
underlying message that although we should follow in God s path, we are not expected to follow
blindly. Likewise, in the poem The Tygerby William Blake, it s theme is a reflection of what this
quote implies. Throughout this poem, Blake explores the possibility of questioning God while
using the structure of the poem, as well as the irony of God s character, and several sound devices
in hopes of communicating a message, that to questionGod is only human nature.
First of all, the structure of Blake s poem really contributes to emphasizing it s theme. Roughly
the poem is divided into three major parts, the author starts by describing a tiger, a ferocious and
deadly animal. He slowly transitions into questioning the creation of the Tyger, which he
purposely and carefully organizes as context to the third stage where he will prove what he is
trying to convey through this poem. And what shoulder, and what art. Could twist the sinews of
thy heart? (11 120) This quote, taken from the second part of this poem s structure displays an
example the kind of questions Blake would ask about the tiger s creation. It supports the theme by
helping to create suspense to really magnifying the third part of the poem s structure by making the
reader really think, which is essential in

Essay on I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsworth
I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsworth
I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsworth, a poem that discloses the relationship
between nature and human beings: how nature can affect one s emotion and behavior with its
motion and sound. The words the author adopted in this poem are interconnected and related to
each other. They are simple yet profound, letting us understand how much William Wordsworth
related his works to nature and the universe. It also explained to us why William Wordsworth is
one of the greatest and the most influential English romantic poets in history. As Robert DiYanni

The daffodils became the speaker s companions in the third stanza, and they were describing as the

happiness and joy.
As the poem goes on, the second emotion from the speaker occurs in the last stanza: the state of
solitude. For oft, when on my couch I lie, in vacant or in pensive mood, they flash upon that
inward eye, which is the bliss of solitude, the first emotion of isolation and loneliness seems to

because the daffodils will be there to dance for him, to keep him company; as the poet writes,
which is the bliss of solitude; and then my heart with pleasure fills, and dances with the daffodils.

Queensland Bulls Research Paper
The Queensland Bulls Cricket Team Queensland s Premier Male Cricket Team Since 1882
Queensland s Cricket History Cricket can be seen in Queensland as early as 1857, two years
before its separation from New South Wales and statehood. The first inter colonial, or
representative, match was in 1864 when the Queensland XXII was beaten by the New South Wales
XI. They would record their first victory in 1875 when the Queensland XVIII beat the NSW XI.
This victory was the spark behind the formation of the Queensland Cricket Association the
following year. In 1892/93, ten years after the formation of the Queensland Bulls, they were granted
first class status, winning their inaugural first class match against NSW in that season by 14 runs.
Due to the tyranny of distance, and the fact that the players held non professional status, the
opportunities for more than a few first class competitions were limited. During the 1892/93 season
they rarely played more than two inter colonial matches.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They were finally admitted to the Sheffield Shield 34 years later for the 1926/27 season. It was a

it was hard for them to maintain that level of competition. During the first 19 seasons they
finished last (out of the then four team competition) 15 times. Queensland has gained
momentum over the years and had gone on to win the Sheffield Shield seven times: 1995, 1997,

Themes And Symbolism In The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner
INTRODUCTION Symbolism means to inspire objects with a certain meaning that is different
from their original meaning or the original function. Other literary devices, such as metaphor,
allusion, and allegory, aid in the development of symbolism. Authors use symbolism to tie certain
things that may initially seem not important to many other universal themes. The symbols then
represent these ideas or qualities. Symbolism used by writers to strengthen their writing, making it
more interesting and adding a different layer of deeper meaning. It is a literary device that uses one
thing in representation of another. The Rime of the Ancient Marinerwas published in 1798, written
by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The first version of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner appeared in the

When the wedding Guest protested at being detained, the Mariner dropped his hand and held him
only with his glittering eye. So powerful was his spell that the Wedding Guest was forced to listen
to his story like a three years child . The Ancient Mariner now told him how he undertook a
southward voyage with two hundred sailors. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner ,this poem is filled
with religiously and morally orientated symbols. One of the important symbol and perhaps the most
overlooked is the mariner himself. He represents the individual soul and all the struggles that one
eventually faces through life and death. He is the symbol of the Christian who commits sins for
which Christ died on the cross. And he can be the symbolic representation of Adam. The mariner s
journey and tribulations that begin with the slaying of the albatross and end with his return to dry
land in England parallel a soul s journey from sin to redemption. The ship crossed the equator.

The Power Of The Athenian Constitution
The general public did not create, We, the people , but by 50 or so white men who owned
property. The Athenian democracy followed a similar rule; to be on the Athenian senate, one had
to be a male who owned property and was not a slave. This trend has been seen throughout the
western world in establishing democracies; the hegemonic power controls the laws of the state. But
now, with technology, we are able to empower the disenfranchised and have a more equal
representation. And with more holistic and comprehensive laws due to having a more equal
representation of the people, which may create less corruption.
The more a government appears to be transparent, the more legitimate they seem to their citizens.
Having a more transparent government, according to Rose Ackerman, should reduce corruption.
Technology is becoming a commonplace tool to create transparency within the government.
Governments are starting to use Crowd sourcing as a technological tool to increase transparency.
Crowd sourcing may become the trend of the future to fight corruption within the United States
and abroad. Crowd sourcing as defined by the Merriam Webster Dictonary as the practice of
obtaining needed services, ideas, or content by soliciting contributions from a large group of people
and especially from the online community rather than from traditional employees or suppliers.

The Pueblo Revolt of 1680 Essay
The Pueblo Revolt of 1680
All through the history of the world there have been superior civilizations that have taken over
other groups and have forced them in to situations that would seem unimaginable to the most
people today. The same situation once happened to the native people that live in what today is
considered the south west of the United States. In 1550 Francisco VГЎsquez de Coronado led a
Spanish conquest in the Rio Grande valley the area that a number of pueblo people made this area
there home and sacred lands. With Coronado eading the way the gate was opened to the rest of

As the same happened the of the pueblo revolt of 1680. The entire thing that the historian s point
out the there are a great deal of circumstances that would make the pueblos revolt. Henry Warner
Bowden argues that religion what the primary cause for he pueblos to unite and over throw the
Spaniard regime of the southwest. Historian Ramon A. Gutierrez points out that it was the skillful
Franciscans who where at first ale to manipulate the Pueblos in to taking the new religion, but
after time the pueblos lost interest and where no longer amused by the new religion that was
forced upon them. According to Van Hasting Garner the reason that the pueblos took up arm is
due the immediate events that happened in that era for example; drought, famine and the apache
raids of the 1670 s. New Mexican priest Angelico Chaves points out that the reason for the pueblo
revolt of 1680 that the actions of Doming Naranjo, a mixed Indian created a stir united the pueblos
and created the Revolt. The last argument in the book made by Andrew L. Knaut is the reason for
the pueblos revolt of 1680 is that It was just the right time since the pueblos had been resentful
towards the Spaniard and with in time the Spaniards lost their ability to keep the pueblos

Willy Loman Foil
Foil in Death of a Salesman In the play, Death of a Salesman, Arthur Miller establishes Charley, a
humble and successful salesman as the foil to Willy Loman, a prideful and arrogant man.
Charley is the perfect character to help depict Willy s flaws. Although the two contrast with
each other, their characteristics help maintain a balance between them. Willy Loman lives in
his own world, where he believes that in order to be successful, one must be well liked with a
great appearance. The man who makes an appearance...is the man who gets ahead (Miller 1568).
These are obvious words from Willy which proves that he does not believe in hard work. He
instills within both of his children that looks and personality are all that matters. The
characteristics of Willy allow us to grasp the idea that he lives within a false reality. He is a man
living within a child s fantasy based off of the life of Dave Singleman. The very words he spoke
against his neighbor Charley and his son, Bernard, are the very words that prove him wrong.

every flaw in Willy by highlighting his own positive aspects as well. Miller uses his unique war of

Humor, An Extensive Language Of Amusement Through Humor
Imagine a vast concert hall filled with people. The audience excitedly clamor in anticipation for
the main star of this event. The event they paid so much money for, cleared up time in their
schedule for, spent time getting to the event for. As the lights dim, the spotlight shines on the
center stage. Then an average person emerges on the stage with a thousand eyes on him. He only
has with a microphone in his hand. Just a typical person, with a normal gait and normal sense of
fashion. However, after speaking a few words in the microphone, the crowd bursts into a
cacophony of laughter. No matter how ordinary or extraordinary the person, entertainment through
humor is universal. Utilizing humor, an extensive language of amusement, to open perspectives
and challenge what is conceived right or wrong can be impactful if done correctly. Dave Sedaris
accomplishes that goal when he uses humor to illustrate his dilemma because of his identity.
Despite being an accomplished successful comedian, author, radio show host, certain people look
down at him as just a homosexual freak. Rather than gravely addressing his opposition, Sedaris
utilizes a jovial yet relatable anecdote called Chicken in a Henhouse . Incorporating ideas from
Ardian Bardon s The Philosophy of Humor , specifically, the three theories of humor: superiority
theory, incongruity theory and relief theory, Sedaris argues that the American public stereotypes
homosexuals as pedophiles and ,as a result, they feel

There are many theories presented on this debate yet there is limited scientific data confirming
any theory. However all theories lead to a similar conclusion, training is needed in order to see
improvement and achieve success. The controversial side is whether genetics is a major factor,
numerous studies conducted lead to the scientifically proven fact that genetics determines your
base level along with your physical peak. To test this, scientists subjected untrained people to the
same training regime in order to see their improvement levels. From this, it was plain to see that
some candidates saw great improvements whilst others saw little. Through further studies it was
evident that those who were related saw similar results, from this we are able to gather that
genetics play a major part in you athletic improvement. Those who saw significant improvements
were deemed as high responders, whilst those who saw little are low responders. Athletes who
compete at international level and achieve high results have been recognised to be high responders
along with completing an excessive training regime and hold a superior make up. Although training

Exposing Pain in The Enormous Radio
In John Cheever s short story, The Enormous Radio, Jim and Irene Westcott are presented as
average, middle class Americans with hopes and dreams just like everyone else. They are
described as the kind of people who seem to strike that satisfactory average of income, endeavor,
and respectability (Cheever 817). Jim and Irene thought they were the epitome of the perfect
American family that was free from trouble and worry. The only way that they differed from their
friends and neighbors was a deep passion for serious music. This passion, through the enormous
radio, brought to their attention the realization that they had just as many problems as the next

Why had this become such a necessity? As she listened to her neighbors most intimate and
private discussions, Irene began to feel depressed, instead of delighted as she once had been
(Giordano 57). Jim had bought the radio to make his wife happy, but the depressing, real life
stories she was hearing everyday made her realize that they had their fair share of problems too.
Listening to other couples quarrel all day made her think about all the problems she and Jim had.
Irene had deluded herself into thinking that her life was different from those she listened to on a
daily basis (Giordano 57), but she now understood that even they had difficulties.
Jim had become fed up with Irene s obsession with the enormous radio. He did not understand
why she listened to it so intently if all it did was bring her misery. Meanwhile, Irene constantly
nagged at Jim for even an inch of reassurance that they had better lives than those on the radio.
Jim fought himself to hold in all his built up anger and frustration towards his wife and replied
Of course we re happy (Cheever 823). Jim knew that they had just as many problems as the next
family. He tried to discuss them with his wife, but as TaVeta Smith points out, she doesn t address
Jim s concerns at all (59).
Jim becomes so upset with Irene s obsession that he unleashes his anger by explaining to her why
she is so caught up in the enormous radio. He

Les Miserables:
The Significance of Sacrifice Sacrifice is a prominent part of human living. In order to get what is
needed or wanted, sacrifice is necessary, whether it is small or great. In the novel, Les Miserables
by Victor Hugo, he shows that in society, those with less must often sacrifice more. Hugo conveys
sacrifice through the characters Fantine and Jean Valjean, by showing how they sacrifice in order

From the moment on he dedicated his life solely to her, to protecting her from the sorrows of
poverty. From that moment he could no longer be Jean Valjean, or Monsieur Madeleine, he had
to start his life over once again and Cosette was all he had in it. He sacrificed in order to gain self
approval and the ability to forgive himself. Jean Valjean went through the ultimate self sacrifice,
giving up everything he had in life, which was Cosette; he decided to give her to her lover
Marius. He had watched and knew that Marius was in love with her. He found him at the
barricades and saved him. Jean Valjean, in the thick cloud of combat, did not appear to see
Marius; the fact is that he did not take his eyes from him. When a shot struck down Marius, Jean
Valjean bounded with the agility of a tiger, dropped upon him as a prey, and carried him away
(Hugo 389). He saved Marius so he could save Cosette; he rid himself of his protective bond for
her benefit. He sacrificed what he wanted most, to give her what she needed. Although he had
never experienced a happy life, and no one ever sacrificed for him, he sacrificed his well being,

Compare And Contrast Rob And Lauren
Rob and Lauren, two married lovers who lived happily together, shared the honor of being
mother and father to a 12 year old son, Jake. The well known family of three was very privileged
with wealth and lived in a beautiful house that sat all on it s own. While Rob and Lauren cherished
the moments they spent with their son, they also found it very important to keep their love life
alive even through the busyness of work, parenting, and friendships.
Rob and Lauren spontaneously decide to get a babysitter and have a date night to get away from
every day distractions. Little did Lauren know, Rob had this planned for a little bit longer than
expected. Rob set up the babysitter, made reservations at her favorite restaurant, and even made
sure to include for favorite alcoholic beverages. After dropping their son off at the babysitter s

Lauren broke down, crippled by the unfolding events. She couldn t believe she was being accused

Worried about her son and husband, Lauren did her best to be completely honest and up front

Social Conflict Theory Research Paper
The Structural Functional theory is a macro oriented theory that regards society as a complex
system. In this system, each part is interdependent and works together so that society functions as
a whole. Every part has a role that is necessary for the good of the overall functioning of that
society. Society is connected by a social consensus which is an agreed upon set of guidelines for
the society. This theory strives for equilibrium and promotes stability and solidarity. It believes that
social stability is necessary to have a strong society.
The Social Conflict theory is a macro oriented theory that views social life as a competition for
limited resources. This theory sees society as a competition among individuals for social,
political, and material resources. Examples of these resources include political power, housing,
leisure time, and money. The social conflict theory sees the inequality in society and is constantly
undergoing change. This theory believes that the wealthy or elite controls the poor and weak,
which benefits the wealthy at the expense of the poor. It believes that far reaching change is
necessary to eliminate social inequality. The social conflict theory emphasizes that the powerful
groups use their power to take advantage of the groups or individuals with less power. Social

Recommendation Letter For My Superiors At The Company I Work
The following paper will establish how I will communicate a request to my superiors at the
company I work for. In order for my request to be properly communicated to my superiors I will
firstly need to clearly identify the request. Secondly, I will need to analysis my audience. Thirdly, I
will need to specify which tactics will be used to influence my audience. Finally, I will write the
memo that I plan on submitting to my audience.
1. Request: The industry of construction is an industry where you have to be precise and very
accurate. This is why I will be requesting that the superiors in my company purchase a piece of
software Chief Architect and revert from using their current software Sketch up . This task will
require persuasion because the owners of the company think that using open source software like
Sketch up will be sufficient. The company has been using Sketch up for over five years and their
thought process is that its free, it works, and there is no need to pay for other software. One of
the designers and architects at the firm has tried to ask for this software in the past and the bosses
turned the idea down because the software was too expensive. The designer didn t provide any
evidence or provided little logic for his argument, which is why he was unsuccessful in influencing
the superiors. Influencing them into purchasing is the only option now and everyone in the
company acknowledges the need for such software except the superiors.

Environmental Factors In Poisonwood Bible And Lilac Girls...
During times of conflict, literature has often included the remorseful reactions of civilians. These
themes go forward to show the human s processes to handle grief during times that stress their
mental capability. Throughout a lifetime, many things are gained; experience, wisdom, knowledge,
as well as a sure sense of self. But along with all these great things come regret, guilt, and shame of
past events. Everyone deals with these in different ways, sometimes turning to religion and denial
as coping mechanisms. Each person reacts differently to guilt in response to their environmental
factors. In the literary works, Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolverand Lilac Girls by Martha
Hall Kelly, the authors use a multifaceted point of view to espouse how environmental factors
influence the individuality with how one copes with the burden of guilt. In Poisonwood Bible,
Orleanna is a prime example of how her time in the Congoinfluenced her handling of guilt.
Nathan Price is like a dictator to Orleanna and his daughters forcing them to live in the Congo
and fulfill his missionary work. Orleanna describes her marriage as: By then I was lodged in the
heart of darkness, so thoroughly bent to the shape of marriage I could hardly see any other way to
stand. Like Methuselah I cowered beside my cage, and though my soul hankered after the
mountain, I found, like Methuselah, I had no wings (201). Orleanna is like a slave to Nathan,
paralyzed and has no voice. Explaining that the Congo

The Nanking Massacre
In this book, Iris Chang brings to light the atrocities that occurred during the Nanking massacre by
focusing on the initial Japanese attacks on the city, the work of the international community to
protect the Chinese, and the subsequent cover up of the massacre. Chang s primary argument is
that the events surrounding the Rape of Nanking have been downplayed by western and Japanese
scholars, and need to be discussed. A key element of the book is to counter a revisionist approach
to the events of Nanking which, in her estimation, pervade Japanese schools and have subsequently
misled westerners into believing that the Japanese military was not as vicious as they were. Her
work does indeed provide a gut wrenching account of the event while sifting... Show more content

Sutton argues that the high reputation of the German advisors in China is overstated by historians,
but the advisors did provide high quality service to the modernization of the Chinese military. The
author attempts to dispel the myths surrounding the German advisory group, and demonstrate how
the Nazi s implementation of their military tactics altered the political landscape leading to the
eventual break from the Nationalists, and alignment with the Japanese. While Sutton limits his
article on the implications of the German s training style, he does well to provide an alternative to
the traditional conception of this group by reasonably making the point that not only has their
reputation been somewhat exaggerated, but their impact may have prepared the Nationalists for the
wrong style of war and not taken into account Chinese

Raymond Carver Popular Mechanics Analysis
In the story Popular Mechanics , Raymond Carver writes in a minimalistic manner causing the
text to have more meaning than it seems. Carver uses symbolism, repetition, and metaphors to
characterize the woman as distraught and agitated towards the man. This displays that the
relationship between the man and the woman is very dysfunctional. Throughout the story, the
woman seems more affected by the situation than the man. Also, the story ends on a devastating
note, depicting the deep meaning behind their relationship and leading to a universal theme.
Carver presents symbolism throughout his story to represent a darker side of the human heart
when it is wounded. Don t, she said. You re hurting the baby, she said. I m not hurting the baby,
he said. The baby represents the relationship of the man and woman. There is not an actual baby
that is being hurt, but their relationship together. Once the issue was decided towards the end, it
represents how the man and woman s relationship was no more. In addition, snow is brought up
in the beginning to start the mood of the relationship. ...The snow was melting into dirty water.
The snow represents the pure white relationship they had in the beginning. Once the snow
melted into dirty water, that shows that their relationship is tainted, fading away, and can never
be the same. This also leads into the light that is set towards the house. The kitchen window gave
no light. The window showing both the darkness of the outside and the inside of the house,
represents how darkness is taking over the relationship, and how there is no more light to shine
on their love for each other. All three of these symbols connect back to how the man and woman
have a codependent relationship. Carver uses the device of repetition when the woman says a
phrase to represent her being in denial of the dysfunctional relationship she is having with the
man. I m glad you re leaving! I m glad you re leaving!... I m so glad you re leaving! She began to
cry. By repeating herself many times about her being fine with the man leaving, reveals that she is
not actually okay with that; however, she says it to make herself believe that she does not care
when she truly does care. This is also revealed

Avoiding the Possessive Shadow of Society
Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote, It is easy in the world to live after the world s opinion; it is
easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd
keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude. (Emerson 1) Being one s self in
today s society is increasingly difficult every year and can have a major effect on the mental
state of teenagers. It is easy to follow the pack, but then one is just a faceless person marching in
with the crowd with no true purpose; true strength is in those who try to be themselves in the face
of society. Many teens struggle with their identities and can turn to self harm or even suicide to
relieve their pain, yet not enough effort goes into trying to help these struggling teens. In fact in a
recent study done for Curing the illness: suicide prevention , professor John Wensly states that
Suicide rates are increasing alarmingly. Every year we see a ten percent increase in suicide
attempts alone. (Wensly 23) In his book Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer writes about Christopher
McCandless, who did anything but live in society s large and possessive shadow. Chris broke free
from society s chains and lived his life with adventure despite the numerous people telling him to
stop. Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer focuses on Christopher McCandless and his mysterious
decision to live on the road.

Critical Analysis Of Wallace Stevens s The Inhabitants
The daily ritual of leaving work in the city to arrive home in the suburbs has been masterfully
depicted in the poem, The Inhabitants. By taking the New Critical analysis approach in using
scientific theory, we can unpack its meaning through a defined system self contained within the
text. In our analysis of The Inhabitants we take a structuralism approach. Structuralism as
defined by Mary Klages, in her book Literary Theory: A Guide for the Perplexed, is a way of
thinking that works to find the fundamental basis units or elements of which anything is made.
(p 31). The number 5 is a very powerful prime number. Taking a closer look at the poem, we see
the power of the 5 paradigm and how it plays a crucial role in unlocking the poem s very
meaning. Similarly, in our class exercise we utilized the work of Wallace Stevens, A Postcard
From the Volcano , and reduced the story to its bare bones. Getting to the basics of Guest s piece,
we can simply start with its structural rhythm of five stanzas. Each stanzais a self contained unit that
describes the transition from the city to the suburbs. In the first stanza the descriptive is of the
onset of departing office workers pilgrimage, Like people in an opera on the street, gracefully
orchestrate an orderly descent from their office building to the bus stop. Not the mad dash out the
door that school children make as their final school bell rings, nonetheless just as anxious. Listen to
the last line of the first stanza,

The Many Languages of Australia and New Zealand
As of 2013, there are many languages spoken both in Australia and New Zealand. Having a history
dating as far as the 18th century, both countries constitute the Austral realm. Within its many
aspects, one of the most notorious is its language. Known by the humorous effect some of its
sentences and words provoke in people, the languageof the Austral realm has helped shape the
identity of Australia as well as New Zealandand has become an essential spectrum of their culture.
In spite of its variations and the reasons behind its current status, this research paper will be
focusing upon the four main languages of the Austral realm: English, New Zealand s and Australia
s sign language, Australian Indigenous language and the Maori language in New Zealand. Each
language has impacted the Austral realm in its own way and will be viewed both individually and
in comparison within the realm s two states. English s history, what constitutes the signs in New
Zealand s sign language, Australian accent... all of them are part of a culture both beautiful and
unique and should, therefore, be treated with the same care as one would treat any relic.
The Austral realm s languages are viewed by its people as more than only an idiom. Its evolution
throughout decades of history has transformed both Australia and New Zealand into a unique
society, filled with a mixture of words and idioms such as go for a burn and dog s breakfast, both of
which exemplifies some of the reasons of the worldwide

The Cost-Effective Analysis of a Rotavirus Immunization...
The Cost effectiveness Analysis of a Rotavirus Immunization Program for the United States article
was performed to estimate the economic impact of a national rotavirus immunization program. The
research question being addressed is if the implementation of a rotavirus vaccine program would be
beneficial and cost effective. These are policy relevant questions because it will determine if a
rotavirusvaccine program will be cost effective and valuable enough to employ. These research
questions are not only relevant to healthcare providers, but doctors, hospitals, the vaccine users, and
society as a whole.
Decision analysis is an appropriate method for this case study because the decision to be made is
operations focused and not tactical, it is impartial rather than subjective, and it is repetitive rather
than infrequent. Decision analysis looks to identify the most appropriate alternative outcomes and
occurs at a give point in time in a process. Additionally, it takes the view point of the organization in
decision making, opposed to an individual standpoint.
Date included in the study consisted of the number of doctor and emergency room visits, the
number of incidences, rotavirus infections, mortality estimates, hospitalizations statistics, hospital
discharge data, affected children, and vaccine coverage. Medical costs of the rotavirus are

Who Was Responsible For Lucifer s Downfall
Augustine on the doctrine of primal sin focuses on the downfall of Lucifer, in whether he foresaw
that his actions would entail a consequence in denying God. For it is arguable that Lucifer did
foresee his coming downfall. Because his intentional actions in turning away from God went
against his angelic nature, implicating Lucifer deliberately deprived himself of what he knew was
the greatest of goods, and avidly sought out the opposite. For Lucifer perversely chose to abandon
all that is good by turning away from God, and towards what is contrary to God. That in which, I
will argue from the doctrines of Augustine, (Book 12 of the city of God) that Lucifer did foresee
his coming downfall. For his downfall begun with bolstering the vices of... Show more content on

If Lucifer s nature was meant to be prideful, God would not have punished him. For Lucifer
would be flourishing to the degree of goodness that is written into his particular being. For this
particular nature would have been purposely authored from God, and Augustine explains that no
one suffers punishment for faults of nature . However, given that Lucifer s angelic nature yearns
to to cleave to God, demonstrates how he deliberately chose to reject his nature by turning away
from God. For Lucifer possesses the faculties of reasoning to distinguish what is righteous from
what is unrighteous . That in which, Lucifer fully understands that he is choosing to embrace
misery by neglecting his angelic nature is cleaving to God. For Augustine s asserts that Vices are
contrary to God , this is demonstrated by the intention of Lucifer practicing the vices of pride,
which goes against everything that he knows is good by. For the vices contradict all that is good,
and to partake in them results in misery. This in effect demonstrates how pride cannot be an aspect
of Lucifer s Angelic nature, but rather how the vices must be deliberately performed from the will
itself. Consequently, Lucifer than is not prideful by nature, rather he chose to habitually embrace
the vice which led him to rejecting God, and his angelic

Should gun ownership be banned or should guns be controlled? Does gun ownership create a violent society? The answer is not measurable, however, from the firearm situation between America and Canada, the answer is more obvious. America probably has the highest rate of gun ownership in the world. Despite having one of the highest rates of gun ownerships, Canada actually has the lowest crime rate in the world. Well, a uniform federal firearms control system seems far more important than the number of gun ownership. In order to reduce the availability of guns, strict regulations should be addressed. Any occupant who conditionally needs a gun should acquire a certificate from both the police and doctors. Personal and medical details of gun owner should be honestly provided. According to the gun control system established in Canada, Canadians who wish to purchase a gun must acquire a Firearm Acquisition Certificate from the police. In order to obtain a Firearms Acquisition Certificate, am applicant must provide identification and background information, including addresses for the past five years. Unlike some American states, applicants are not acquired to supply medical information to the police. Apart from applying for gun certificates, the restriction of uses of certain guns should be regulated so as to ensure no collateral effect. For example, the Canadian FAC system includes control of restricted weapons and prohibited weapons. Restricted weapons must be stored only in one s home or place of business depending on terms of the registration certificate. Prohibited weapons, such as shotguns, sawed off rifles and silencers are absolutely illegal in Canada. In Bowling ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Is it a religious or ritual tradition, a warfare custom, or simply done out of necessity? There is no one answer to this question, so in this paper I will try to analyze some different explanations for this. Cannibalismhas been practiced all over the world and may have been practiced for tens of thousands of years. Out of 87 members, 48 were finally able to make it to California after resorting to cannibalism for survival. This is one of the most well known examples of cannibalism being used out of necessity. Another example is the shipwreck of the Essex whaler. A sperm whale attacked and sunk the ship in 1820. Survivors were stranded for 95 days at sea and were forced to eat five of the dead crewmembers. Eventually, the men had to draw straws of who would sacrifice themselves and be eaten. Seven more crewmen were cannibalized until the remaining eight men were rescued. Tribal societies most commonly practice the act of cannibalism, and can sometimes be seen as a cultural norm. This is usually done for rituals. Some tribes eat the flesh of dead tribe members to help the dead person s soul navigate into living offspring. This is an example of endo cannibalism, where people are consumed within the tribe, usually part of a grieving process. During wartime, enemies might be eaten to glorify a victory. In Melanesia, enemies might have been eaten to insult their people. Some groups think eating the flesh of another person would give them that person s characteristics. These wise words of King James verse (1:5) of the bible portrays an underlying message that although we should follow in God s path, we are not expected to follow blindly. Likewise, in the poem The Tygerby William Blake, it s theme is a reflection of what this quote implies. Throughout this poem, Blake explores the possibility of questioning God while using the structure of the poem, as well as the irony of God s character, and several sound devices in hopes of communicating a message, that to questionGod is only human nature. First of all, the structure of Blake s poem really contributes to emphasizing it s theme. Roughly the poem is divided into three major parts, the author starts by describing a tiger, a ferocious and deadly animal. He slowly transitions into questioning the creation of the Tyger, which he purposely and carefully organizes as context to the third stage where he will prove what he is trying to convey through this poem. And what shoulder, and what art. Could twist the sinews of thy heart? When a shot struck down Marius, Jean Valjean bounded with the agility of a tiger, dropped upon him as a prey, and carried him away (Hugo 389). He saved Marius so he could save Cosette; he rid himself of his protective bond for her benefit. He sacrificed what he wanted most, to give her what she needed. These themes go forward to show the human s processes to handle grief during times that stress their mental capability. Throughout a lifetime, many things are gained; experience, wisdom, knowledge, as well as a sure sense of self. But along with all these great things come regret, guilt, and shame of past events. Everyone deals with these in different ways, sometimes turning to religion and denial as coping mechanisms. Each person reacts differently to guilt in response to their environmental factors. In the literary works, Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolverand Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly, the authors use a multifaceted point of view to espouse how environmental factors influence the individuality with how one copes with the burden of guilt. In Poisonwood Bible, Orleanna is a prime example of how her time in the Congoinfluenced her handling of guilt. Nathan Price is like a dictator to Orleanna and his daughters forcing them to live in the Congo and fulfill his missionary work. • 45. Raymond Carver Popular Mechanics Analysis In the story Popular Mechanics , Raymond Carver writes in a minimalistic manner causing the text to have more meaning than it seems. Carver uses symbolism, repetition, and metaphors to characterize the woman as distraught and agitated towards the man. This displays that the relationship between the man and the woman is very dysfunctional. Throughout the story, the woman seems more affected by the situation than the man. Also, the story ends on a devastating note, depicting the deep meaning behind their relationship and leading to a universal theme. Carver presents symbolism throughout his story to represent a darker side of the human heart when it is wounded. Don t, she said. You re hurting the baby, she said. I m not hurting the baby, he said. The baby represents the relationship of the man and woman. There is not an actual baby that is being hurt, but their relationship together. Once the issue was decided towards the end, it represents how the man and woman s relationship was no more. In addition, snow is brought up in the beginning to start the mood of the relationship. ...The snow was melting into dirty water. The snow represents the pure white relationship they had in the beginning. Once the snow melted into dirty water, that shows that their relationship is tainted, fading away, and can never be the same. This also leads into the light that is set towards the house. The kitchen window gave no light. The window showing both the darkness of the outside and the inside of the house, represents how darkness is taking over the relationship, and how there is no more light to shine on their love for each other. All three of these symbols connect back to how the man and woman have a codependent relationship. Carver uses the device of repetition when the woman says a phrase to represent her being in denial of the dysfunctional relationship she is having with the man. I m glad you re leaving! I m glad you re leaving!... I m so glad you re leaving! She began to cry. By repeating herself many times about her being fine with the man leaving, reveals that she is not actually okay with that; however, she says it to make herself believe that she does not care when she truly does care. Avoiding The Possessive Shadow Of Society Ethan Honorat Mr. Naserdine Literature Honors 5 January 2016 Avoiding the Possessive Shadow of Society Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote, It is easy in the world to live after the world s opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude. (Emerson 1) Being one s self in today s society is increasingly difficult every year and can have a major effect on the mental state of teenagers. It is easy to follow the pack, but then one is just a faceless person marching in with the crowd with no true purpose; true strength is in those who try to be themselves in the face of society. Many teens struggle with their identities and can turn to self harm or even suicide to relieve their pain, yet not enough effort goes into trying to help these struggling teens. In fact in a recent study done for Curing the illness: suicide prevention , professor John Wensly states that Suicide rates are increasing alarmingly. Every year we see a ten percent increase in suicide attempts alone. By taking the New Critical analysis approach in using scientific theory, we can unpack its meaning through a defined system self contained within the text. In our analysis of The Inhabitants we take a structuralism approach. Structuralism as defined by Mary Klages, in her book Literary Theory: A Guide for the Perplexed, is a way of thinking that works to find the fundamental basis units or elements of which anything is made. (p 31). The number 5 is a very powerful prime number. Taking a closer look at the poem, we see the power of the 5 paradigm and how it plays a crucial role in unlocking the poem s very meaning. Similarly, in our class exercise we utilized the work of Wallace Stevens, A Postcard From the Volcano , and reduced the story to its bare bones. At a young age Kay s mother and father agreed to a divorce and went their separate ways. Following, her mother moved to Europe while her Dad stayed in New York as a state senator. The choice of going with her mum gave Kay a chance to see the world and help her develop an eye for the arts. Kay was always in and out of schools as a child, she never took to formal education and never spent more than three years in a single institution. After spending time in San Francisco and Santa Barbara, Sage attended the Corcoran Art School in Washington, D.C. from 1919 1920, before moving to Rapallo, Italy in June of 1920. There she learned to paint, and immersed... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kay uses bold thick lines to create organic rectangles of either the canvases or wooden frame work . The choice of this could represent the construction or the frame, to, not everything is as it seems, there is more to the picture. This evokes my curiosity. Kay sage is renowned for her obelic vivid shaded colours especially in there serial time, but her choice of colours here seems appropriate. Instead of bright colours taking your attention away from the hidden message, her choice of colours let the mind work on the serious side of the art. The colours of the sky are harmonised by the colours of the canvas or vicar versa. The canvases are a pipet sample of each colour choice in the melody sky. The use of recurring rectangles and leading line of the top of the canvases directs the movement of the eye through the artwork. Your eye is carried through the painting to the horizon where the canvas dump just doesn t stop. In my artwork I choice to make my elements bold and constructed in a way that makes the viewer think instantly, creating immediate responses just like kay does in this ... • 52. Who Was Responsible For Lucifer s Downfall Augustine on the doctrine of primal sin focuses on the downfall of Lucifer, in whether he foresaw that his actions would entail a consequence in denying God. For it is arguable that Lucifer did foresee his coming downfall. Because his intentional actions in turning away from God went against his angelic nature, implicating Lucifer deliberately deprived himself of what he knew was the greatest of goods, and avidly sought out the opposite. For Lucifer perversely chose to abandon all that is good by turning away from God, and towards what is contrary to God. That in which, I will argue from the doctrines of Augustine, (Book 12 of the city of God) that Lucifer did foresee his coming downfall. For his downfall begun with bolstering the vices of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If Lucifer s nature was meant to be prideful, God would not have punished him. For Lucifer would be flourishing to the degree of goodness that is written into his particular being. For this particular nature would have been purposely authored from God, and Augustine explains that no one suffers punishment for faults of nature . However, given that Lucifer s angelic nature yearns to to cleave to God, demonstrates how he deliberately chose to reject his nature by turning away from God. For Lucifer possesses the faculties of reasoning to distinguish what is righteous from what is unrighteous . That in which, Lucifer fully understands that he is choosing to embrace misery by neglecting his angelic nature is cleaving to God. For Augustine s asserts that Vices are contrary to God , this is demonstrated by the intention of Lucifer practicing the vices of pride, which goes against everything that he knows is good by. For the vices contradict all that is good, and to partake in them results in misery. This in effect demonstrates how pride cannot be an aspect of Lucifer s Angelic nature, but rather how the vices must be deliberately performed from the will itself. Consequently, Lucifer than is not prideful by nature, rather he chose to habitually embrace the vice which led him to rejecting God, and his angelic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
