2. Why Did Chartism Fail
Question How far would you agree with the view that Chartism was a glorious failure?
This essay will be looking at the aims and extent the chartists went to in order to bring about
reform within a politically corrupt parliament, whilst ensuring that all classes of society were in
possession of their equal, political and social rights.
The electoral system in the early 19th century was neither a representative nor balanced system,
elections were open to corruption and with only a small minority of adult males being eligible to
vote if they were land owners (Avery, N.D). Parliament were against reform and didn t want the
status quo upset, however with the rising of new industrial cities and towns there was a creation of
the middle class who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lovett pursued in increasing emphasis on educating the working population whilst increasing trade
union activity and support for the Anti Corn Law League (Brown, 2000, p195), whereas O
Connor pursued the Chartist Land Plan by purchasing land through shares, he had ideas to relocate
the working class to ease the unemployment situation and give the settlers freedom and self respect
(Murphy et al, 1997, p120). As depression hit all the major industrial areas leading to high masses
of unemployment, this provoked O Connor into action again who at this time was elected as MP
for Nottingham; he drew up plans for the relaunch of a national convention and the presentation of a
new petition to Parliament (Murphy et al, 1997, p118), however the authorities were uneasy with
the Chartist s plans to present a third petition, there were fears that the revolutions sweeping across
Europe would affect Britain and they knew that some Chartists were in touch with European
radicals. In addition the Chartists hijacked a middle class radical meeting to abolish income tax
which resulted in police intervention and three days of rioting, although the crimes were committed
by non chartists the chartists were classed as being responsible by association (Brown, 2000,

3. Migrant Farm Workers
Migrant farm workers come to Canada to give themselves a better work opportunity and they
believe that will get the same rights as a Canadian. Globalization has allowed many of these migrant
workers to receive an indefinite status which allows many of these individuals rights that starts
problems for citizenship and human rights. What happens is the Canadian citizenship and
international human rights have allowed these migrant workers to come to work, but these workers
find it difficult to secure their rights that have been organized by SAWP. Gabriel and Macdonald

They are alienated as outsiders of Canadian citizenship because they are not a citizen or a member
of the Canadian community, but they do not realize it is just an illusion that has been shown to
them. This also means that these migrant workers are not part of the Canadian society and are
excluded for any rights that a citizen of Canada would have. Gabriel and MacDonald (2014)
acknowledges that Canada s immigration view on migrant worker is referred to as precarious status,
which means programs like SWAP use this status for many of the migrant farm workers because
they cannot be a permanent resident, have the lack of rights and entitlements, and cannot bring any
family to Canada. Due to globalization, there has been a citizenship gap that has been created which
allows certain individuals to have the right to have claims, entitlement and status. This is not
universal because again, migrant farm workers are alienated and excluded from this right. When
looking at the struggles of migrant farm workers face for citizenship rights and human rights, there
is correlation that these struggles are use against them to help Canada secure rights of agricultural

what she had discovered about the standard costs at the Home Security Division. In looking over
the past several years of quarterly earnings reports at the Home Security Division, she noticed that

third quarter earnings were again slightly better, and the fourth quarter always ended with a

When the products are run at a lower cost than the standard, then this produces a favorable variance.
The COGS and variance should net to the correct cost though (this is the reason the system creates
the variance).
The bigger problem here is that any inventory is likely to be overvalued because of wrong
standards. Finished goods inventory is valued at the standard cost. So if there is a lot of inventory
at an inflated cost, then the COGS is being reduced on the income statement too much because of
this. If the inventory were to be revalued at it s correct standard cost, there would be a large
expense to the income statement.
I would say he has been building inventory, more and more each quarter.

The standards are set too high. When the products are run at a lower cost than the standard, then
this produces a favorable variance. The cost of goods sold and variance should net to the correct
cost though and this is the reason the system creates the variance. Lansing set a loose standard

Meetings were held between 1815 and 1825 at Aix la Chapelle, Vienna, Troppau, Verona and St
Petersburg. The main aims were to settle disputes by diplomacy and to maintain peace. The main
problems they addressed were France, revolutionary movements, unrest in Italy and Spain, the
Spanish colonies and Greek revolts. Divergence occurred over whether to intervene militarily to
put down revolutionary movements and/or revolts against governments they considered
legitimate, and whether this constituted interfering in the internal affairs of other countries. The
treatment of France did not cause disagreements, but divisions between the powers and
opposition, especially by Britain, to the use of force to support reactionary rule led to the
breakdown of the Congress System. Candidates could decide whether the Congress System was
therefore a genuine attempt at unified policy, and whether its failure to be expected because of
the diverse interests and nature of the Great Powers. Some may comment that it was perhaps a
forerunner of the later European Union, and although there were revolutions there was no major
war. [0 to 7 marks] for inadequate or irrelevant material. [8 to 10 marks] for narrative of the

7. Alternative Fuels And Its Effects On Our Environment
The engine of today is largely dominated by the oil industry. Most of our energy consumption is
contributed to transportation and movement of goods. This creates a high demand for fuel as the
number of miles driven per person is projected to grow. Currently, 86% of vehicles run on fossil
fuels, which create heavy amounts of carbon dioxidegas which puts heavy strain on our
environment. It is up to large companies to research alternative methods of fuels and compare them
to our most dominant fuel. At the moment, proposed alternative fuels are biodiesel, electricity,
ethanol, and hydrogen fuel cells. If one of these proves to be a viable source, then we can move
toward development of engines that accept these fuels and deviate from standard fossil fuel
consumption.
Biodiesel:
Biodiesel is a renewable fuel derived from animal fats, vegetable oils, and recycled grease. It is
made from a blend of certain plants and animal fats, helping to burn a cleaner reduced emission
fuel. Biodiesel can replace diesel fuel and be used in diesel engines. The US currently produces
about 1.7 billion gallons of biodiesel; not enough to meet our use of 40 billion gallons. Biodiesel
was first developed in 1890 by Rudolph Diesel. Rudolph believed that pure vegetable oils could
power early diesel engines [5]. Despite his discovery, biodiesel development was forgotten as
cheaper alternative sources of fuel were presented. Diesel derived from petroleum was favored over
biodiesel for its

8. The Atmosphere and The Ozone Layer
The atmosphere is an amazing creation. It contains many things that help make this world a place
where we can live. The atmosphere contains ozone. That helps protect our skin from harmful sun
rays. Many layers make up our atmosphere. There are five main layers, the troposphere,
stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and lastly the exosphere. Each layer has a different
purpose. Clouds are located in the atmosphereand are a big part of the water cycle. There are
different types of clouds and they all have different effects. Conduction and convection also play a
big part in how we live our lives today.
Ozone is a gas in the atmosphere. It absorbs ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Without ozone, our
skin would burn from the suns radiation. Ozone can be either good or bad for your health. It
depends on the location of it in the atmosphere. It can also be bad for the environment. When ozone
is near the ground it is considered very dangerous. During the hot summer months ozone levels
should be monitored. In the summer, more harmful ozone concentrations are in the air we use.
Inhaling ozone can be very dangerous to our health. It can cause a number of health problems.
Scientists are figuring out ways to help keep the air clean and people and the environment healthy.

9. The Ethics Of Identity And Choice
Limited work has been done in the field of philosophy concerning how identity and choice
interact. However, Kwame A. Appiah puts forth an account of identity in his book The Ethics of
Identity (2010) that sheds light on how one s choices may be effected by the identities they chose.
The following will describe Appiah s view of identity and how it influences choice, and conclude by
providing commentary concerning how effective Appiah s account of identity is and how it can be
improved.
Appiah (2010, p. 22 24) uses the term collective identities to define and describe a way of
thinking about social identity. However, in order to considered a collective identity, a label (X)
must meet three conditions (Appiah, 2010, p. 66 70). The first condition, availability, refers to the
fact that the label must be one which exists in the social world. If X is not a label that most are
familiar with or that has an agreed upon conceptualization, one cannot identify as X in a way that is
socially relevant. The second condition, internalization, states that some people who are labelled X
must identify as X and that this identification affects the way they see the world in a meaningful
way. The final condition, social response, dictates that there must be a societal response to the label
X. These three conditions reveal how the relationship between the self, social groups, and society as
a whole interact in Appiah s conception of identity. For Appiah, the individual must choose an
identity

The Ethics of the Creation, Distribution, and Use of Metadata
Navigation
This paper discusses the ethical issues that may arise in the creation, distribution, and use of
metadata. To do this, one must first understand what metadata is, and have a reasonable
understanding of how it is used today. Metadata is not a word that the average person can state a
definition for. In fact, even many technologically inclined people may not have a sound idea of
what exactly metadata means. Although many people don t recognize the name, metadata, many
people look at, use, or even create metadata on a daily basis. To truly appreciate how important
metadata is one must have a firm grasp on what metadata allows and how difficult information ...

So I will use an example to further clarify. The card catalog system that has been used in libraries
for years is an example of a standardized system of metadata. Certain requirements are demanded
for each book and this data is stored on a card that makes finding and accessing the needed book
efficient. This is metadata in its oldest and purest form.
Metadata Standards
Metadata standards are even more important in regards to digital information. Metadata used to
classify information stored online crosses many different hardware and software platforms, and
because of the vast amounts of information there is a need for it to be sorted by machine rather
than by human, as in the card catalog system. These parameters call for a standard that is both
visible to the user and readable by a machine. This is what many of the metadata standards in effect
today try to accomplish.
Metadata standards can be looked at from two different extremes, the minimalist view or the
structuralist view. The minimalist view is to have only a small number of requirements that are
easily input by inexperienced users. This allows for most information to be at least somewhat
classified and easily found. From the structuralist view strict requirements should be imposed so as
to keep well documented information well defined and found with great accuracy.5
A prime example of a minimalist metadata structure is The Dublin Core Metadata Initiative. In their
own words, The

11. Higher Plants Contain Many Phytochemical Constituents That
Higher plants contain many phytochemical constituents that are known to be biologically active
compounds. These secondary metabolites not only play a pivotal role in plants producing them,
but also affect their neighboring plant communities. Therefore, one of the mysteries in plant plant
interaction is the plant behavior in response to these various secondary metabolites. Several
studies heavily discussed the impact of phyto allelochemicals upon different crop plants including
faba bean and maize (El Darier, 2002; Madany and Saleh, 2015; Salama and Rabiah, 2015).
However, to date, the influence of fenugreek upon these plants is unaddressed. Our results elucidate

In a previous work, we found that faba bean seeds primed with 1.0mM coumarin showed a
marked improvement in the length of both plumule and radical as well as their fresh and dry
weights of faba bean seedlings and this could be attributed to the elevated levels of endogenous
phyto hormones (IAA, GA3, and ABA) (Saleh et al., 2014). Also tomato plants treated with
salicylic acid exhibited a significant improvement in their dry weights (AL Wakeel et al., 2012).
SA as a spray solution to the shoots of soybean significantly increase the growth of the shoots and
roots under greenhouse or field conditions (Li et al., 2014).
4.3. Chlorophyll
Chlorophyll is a biologically important pigment that is used for the photosynthetic conversion of
inorganic molecules or ions into organic bio molecules. Therefore, photosynthesis is one of the most
crucial indicators of physiological activities in higher plants. Thus, the change of total chlorophylls
content may affect carbon fixation and carbohydrate status by impairing the plant s photosynthetic
capacity. reported that Orobanche ramosa strongly reduced the biomass and yield of the host plant
not only by acting as a competing sink for assimilate, but also by compromising the efficiency of
carbon assimilation via a reduction in leaf chlorophyll content and photosynthetic rate. The

In A Partial Remembrance of a Puerto Rican Childhood, Judith Cofer accomplishes three
powerful achievements: she gives details on the stories of her family experiences, shows her
family stories in a strong imaginative language, and points out how family stories can take over
a person s life. This essay seems to be very tricky because she goes from one story to another.
Cofer s claim would be very difficult to understand if she started with one story; instead, she should
finish explaining the initial story before moving on to the next one. Instead, Cofer shows how a
womancan potentially go crazy if her man mistreats her.

This is why Cofer explains women would be together, so they can listen to each other s

to tell their stories. At the end of paragraph, the author concludes with this room was furnished
with several mahogany rocking chairs, and carved rocker that passed down to Mama at the
death of her mother (66). The women sitting in the room with rocking chairs, tell stories to each
other about their mothers. The chairs are passed down from previous generations. I think Cofer
wants the present generation to learn about the previous generation to pass on to the future
generation. In paragraph 3, she gives us a good example how a man could leave a girl standing at
the church altar with a bouquet of fresh flowers in her hands and disappear off the face of the earth
(67). Men seem to make wrong decisions by leaving a girl behind and don t care what will or may
happen to the girl. Men are tired of female drama, so she decides to leave it all behind him. In
Paragraph 5, she explains how marriage was not something men would hope for but to pay for
privilege of children (67). Men don t care if they find the right women for marriage as long the
women can produce children for them. Men don t want to settle down for only one woman but
many women. She wants people to find out their hidden identity in the future. Kate married at the

This essay about 89 year old Mrs Amalie Jones will be a discussion of assessment and care provision
identified through the concept map in assessment one.Concepts from Miller s Functional
Consequences Theory of healthy ageing will be used to identify the risk factors which negatively
impacts on her function, safety and independence. Focus of this essay will be demonstrating how
the dignity of the client/patient can be maintained through dignified nursing care. The main purpose
of this assessment will be to protomote both problem solving and care provision including
prioritising.According to Miller s Functional Theory, not all the health issues are due to age related
changes, lot of them are a result of risk factors. These can be addressed and even prevented.
Nurses play a big role in the prevention of such problems.Amelie Jones has few age related
problems such as Macular Degeneration , Arthritis and risk factors due to lifestyle such as
Hypothyroidism, risk of fall, weight loss and depression. Nursing interventions will be person

The Book of Job tells the story of a man who is a servant of God, perfect in integrity, who fears God
and avoids evil. (Pg.6). The story centers on the profound suffering Job faces when an Accusing
Angel decides to challenge Job s faith in God (pg. 6). As Job is tested the following questions have
risen from its readers. Is Job patient? Is he impatient? Some people read The Book of Joband think
it tells the story of an incredibly patient man, who withstands immense trials and yet never
experiences aggravation with the test Godallows to fall upon him. Others see Job as impatient;
because he expresses frustration with the trials he is given and cries out to God to end his life
(pgs. 8, 13, 21, 48, 57). I argue that Job is both patient and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Job is tested for his faith, trust, and love for God (pg. 6). The Accusing Angel is focused on
proving God wrong, on making Job lose faith (pg.6). Job is called a great follower of God, by
God Himself and the Accusing Angel clearly does not like that God has shown so much favor
on Job (pg. 6). The test that Job is given by the Accusing Angel, and allowed to be given by God,
challenges Job s relationship with God to see if it is a legitimate relationship or not. As humans
we know that every relationship is tested at some point or another, whether it be a friendship, a
relationship with a family member, or a relationship with a significant other. When relationships
are challenged they fall apart or make it through the struggle, this is how we know if a
relationship with our loved one is strong and durable or if it is shallow and weak. God and Job
have a relationship; God says that they do on page 6 when He references Job as one of his
servants. As Job is tested, so is his relationship with God, does he truly love and trust God to be
able to make it through the struggle? On page 33 Job makes it clear that Only God is wise and
he will do his part and stay faithful to God in the trial so that they can still have a relationship. Job
does not know why God allows for this test to fall upon him and cause the potential destruction of
their relationship, but he believes that God is doing what needs to be done, whether he understands
it or not and whether he agrees with it or not (pg. 27,

Cassidy Liles, 2016). Finally, the therapist should create a supportive, caring and committed
environment for George.
What to Consider in an Intervention Plan
Arrays of tools, treatment and practices have been developed for use during a clinical consultation
to help determine suicidal thoughts, concerns and behaviors (James, 2013). Within the tools
developed determinant conditions and preindication signs are identified (Montague, Cassidy Liles,
2016). The succeeding section will distinguish and outline risk factors, suicide hints and suicidal
assessment that are designed to gauge suicidal thoughts, concerns and behaviors (Montague,
Cassidy Liles, 2016). A suicide assessment is essential for clients who have suicidal behavior
(Ribeiro, Bodell, Hames, Hagan, Joiner, 2013). A suicide risk assessment can be a vital step for
prevention of suicidal behavior (Ribeiro, Bodell, Hames, Hagan, Joiner, 2013). Suicide risk
assessment is a crucial element in working with saddened clients and is the initial step in treating
suicidal clients (Huh et al., 2012; Regehr, LeBlanc, Bogo, Paterson, Birze, 2015). The risk of
attempting or finalizing a suicide increases with the more signs or symptoms a client disclose
(Kanel, 2015). Individuals usually give a sign or a warning before they commit suicide, but they
may not openly say what their plan is or how they are feeling (Kanel, 2015).

18. Social Deviance
The reproductions of babies are fundamental to life and the ongoing creation of human kind. Our
whole world must face all the great and the not so great that come with the bearing of a child.
This involves mothers having the option to care and nurture their child where ever and
whenever they please, such as breast feeding in public if it were to be an option. However,
overtime societies view and perspective on breast feeding has become more of a deviant act
then it was many years ago. While looking at the deviance of breast feeding in public overtime, it
can be viewed in the lenses of social norms that are divided into 2 groups: folkways and mores.
Breast feeding can also fall under the category of labeling theory and conflict perspective can
also play a role in the deviance of social construct. William Sumner is the genius that decided to
place norm into separate groups, such as, folkway and mores in the year 1906. (The Editors)
Folkway is described as the everyday norm that is based on tradition, custom and mannerism.
(Ferrante, 2015) And if a person decides not to follow through with the folkway norm then it
would possibly cause others to think that they are strange or different from others around them, but
it would not cause any type conflict. Folkway connects with breast feeding if one believes in
Christianity and the Virgin Mary because it is said that if one witnesses the Virgin Mary breast
feeding or nursing whether it is through a dream, art or real historical

Introduction
Assistive technologies are any device or aid that makes completing a task easier. From something
as simple as large print for the vision impaired, to more complex assistive technologies like hearing
aids for the hearing impaired. Assistive technologies are designed to make life and learning easier.
The use of assistive technologies inside the classroom is dependent upon many factors. From what
support is provided by the school and other agencies, to the standards and regulations that schools
must obeyed by. The most important factor though is the needs of the students and what assistive
technology best supports their needs. Finding and deciding which assistive technologies best

Inclusive Education
Every child has a right to an education and equal opportunity. Special needs schools are becoming a
thing of the past and students are being integrated into mainstream schools. In 1994 ninety two
governments and twenty five international organisations gathered with the belief that all students,
including those with special education needs, are entitled to an education delivered by mainstream
schools (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, 1994). These like
minded governments and international organisations came together to outline a guide for all those
schools who believe in inclusive education. Stated in the guidelines schools and support services
were to receive resources to support student s learning and ensure teachers are well trained
(UNESCO, 1994). Assistive technologies, from Ipads to wheelchairs, would fall under the category
of resources.
Assistive Technologies
Assistive technologies are designed and manufactured to make life and learning easier. AT
supports both the teacher of special needs students and the student s development. There is a wide
range of AT available and the appropriate AT is dependent on the student s needs. Foreman and

David Henry Hwang s award winning show Madame Butterfly is a story of a French diplomat
and his Chinese mistress that he later discovers was not only a spy but a man. Throughout this
play sexuality has been exploited not only by Gallimard (the French Diplomat) but prominently
seen by his collogue/best friend Mark. Mark s role is shown in the play as an unfettered
masculine sexuality in Gallimard s head. Whenever Gallimard struggles with questions of
sexual ethics and desire he automatically imagines Mark and thinks of his ideologies. Mark
translates to the audience that Western men are charming, masculine and quite the ladies man;
womanizing is a norm in their society. Mark displays the characteristics of charm and
masculinity repeatedly throughout the play. In the beginning of the play he invites Gallimard
to a beach party. He provokes him and tries to persuade him to go because it will be fun . His
idea of fun is girls with big boobs and a tight ass (as he recalls it) that are will be willing to do
anything for booze and a good time. According to him that s what men in college do to have fun.
Gallimard refuses to go because he doesn t want just any woman to have sex; he is looking for a
deeper relationship and by deeper he wants a woman that is dependent on his masculinity and needs
saving. Throughout the play Mark s ethical values about women are emphasized through him and
Gallimard. They are shown to be the ethical values of the Western society. The time that the play

Being silenced from sharing your thoughts because of how people see you, is one of the worst
things ever. As a hispanic student, the product of two immigrants, I know exactly what that
feels like. When assumptions about a person or group people are not questioned by a society,
they are more vulnerable to dysfunction. In Lord of the Flies, a group of English boys from a
boarding school are left stranded on an island when their plane is shot down amidst the
commotion of the world war. The group of various aged boys, are forced to make a choice

Besides the fact that the boys on the island think of Piggy in only one way, they let it continue

Ralph, Piggy stands up for his leader, which earns him a punch in the stomach from Jack. Then,
Jack [stands] over him. His voice [is] vicious with humiliation. You would, would you? Fatty!
Ralph [makes] a step forward and Jack [smacks] Piggy s head (Goulding 71). Multiple times,
Ralph acknowledges Piggy s strengths but does not stand up for him enough. Piggy becomes the
punching bag for the rest of the group when they are feeling uneasy. Groups who assumptions are

resources. Over increasing periods of time, however, the population began to consist of more

that the United States was fighting for ourselves and instead for the South Koreans. The Forgotten
War is the nickname for the Korean War, but here is where the importance of the United States that

most important types of the social media nowadays. The community media focusses upon the
interaction between users. The community media is such as Facebook. By contrast, publish

punishment, in regards to the capital punishment, it is necessary to look at both in relation to the
media.
With the attractions of the media, there are public opinion polls which provided the society s
attitudes about the death penalty. The resulting surveys show that the public support for the capital
punishment had risen and fall greatly over the past years. During the 1970s, when the capital
punishment began to make its executions, an increased fear of violence in crime, the public
supported 60 percent favoring executions (Von Drehle, 2006, p. 83). However, the public support
of capital punishment continued to rise in the next decade. According to the General Social
Survey, the favor of capital punishment was nearly 80 percent in 1994 (Von Drehle, 2006, p. 83).
The public opinion regarding the death penalty would follow a decrease support over the time. In

the cases indicating if the criminal is innocent or not (Von Drehle, 2006, p. 84). While seeing the

By the early 1700s, the Western world had grown tired of the Machiavellian absolutism that

paradigm shift in both American and European approaches to knowledge. Rather than a commodity
to be hoarded, education was imperative for the survival of society, through the instruction of
universities which would maintain a safe depositary for future generations and the proliferation of
texts that would keep citizens edified in science and the humanities. While the Enlightenment
integrated science in the culture of the Americas, the efforts of Jonathan Edwards and his Great
Awakening colleagues attempted to slow its integration. Similar to the Catholic Church,
philosophers and preachers of the Great Awakening viewed science as a direct challenge to the blind

36. Liberalism and Social Contract Essay
Liberalism and Social Contract
Charles Larmore speaks of moral complexity as it exists in a pluralistic sense. The idea of
pluralism says that each and every person has their own separate conception of the good as it
appears to them. It is I virtually impossible to have to separate entities come up with the same
exact concept of the Good Life and what it holds for them. As there are these conflicts ideals that
exist in each of us it is possible for our conception of the good to come under attack from
competing concepts that are held by others around us. Some one who is Muslim may have a
conception of the good that wants to eradicate me and my notion of the good. There needs to exist
some centralized ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Larmore brings this to point in the way of his modus vivendi which is useful to have a justice that
exists in the state to protect our own conception of the good respectively.
Hume wrote of justice as an artificial virtue that we create to make things in life work. Larmore
thinks that there is a problem with this idea of an artificial virtue, he argues that what
distinguishes an artificial virtue from a natural one (such as courage) cannot be that it fails to be
instinctive, as Hume wrote, (Larmore, 70 71) this is evident in that every virtue must be learned
in some way either by teaching of the intellectual or the habituation of the moral virtues that
Hume considers natural. It is important to see what Hume thought of as the circumstances of
justice that are explained in two groups, the external and the internal that cause conflict based on
wants and needs and individual concepts of the good respectively. This conflict creates a need
for the virtue of justice to take care of the problems that arise. This encompasses the principle of
liberal justice that is necessary for anyone to keep their conception of the good life. This modus
vivendi or way of living is a means of accommodation between the political right and the
individual concept of the good. It is a sort of pragmatic principle the helps us all get along in this
pluralistic setting of any society. This comes of

In this classroom, students were interpreting and breaking down song lyrics to discover different
typed of figurative language, and to explain what they thought the lyrics meant. The first five
minutes the students were turning in their articles of the week. The teacher took this time to ask
the students about their plans for the weekend (it was a Friday). At the beginning of the class the
students were listening to a particular song, the teacher picked a newer song that the students
enjoyed and stayed engaged listening to. She passed out a paper copy of the lyrics, for the
students to follow. Along with a lyric sheet, she gave them another assignment with questions.
They were to identify a type of figurative language used in the song. Then at the end they were to
pick a topic, three choices were given, to write a short essay on. I knew the students were engaged
when because they all seemed to enjoy the song, and it was the quietest classroom I ve ever been in.

sexism in the media
Karen Harper,
Oakland LMV
What comprises sexism and feminism? Do sexist images in the media have an impact on women
and girls? And, what are the broader political issues here? I am hoping that we can reframe the
debate around sexism and nudity in the media in a way that makes sense for socialists.
We re all probably aware of sexist representations in the media from newspapers and magazines
to the movies, TV and radio. For example, Rolling Stone magazine didn t used to be a soft porn
magazine, but it is so common now for female musicians to be in soft porn poses on its cover.
Howard Stern, the radio DJ, is always asking his female guests and callers what they are wearing.

As one student told the BBC s Inside Out program: I work when I want to. I make the amount of
money I want to, and if I don t feel like it I can quit. No one is pushing me to do it.
But contrast this with the comment of a regular frequenter of lap dancing clubs: It makes me
feel like a king to be sitting there with all these women surrounding me, giving me loads of
attention. Nothing beats the thrill of calling a woman over, sitting her down and talking to her,
knowing that if you give her money she is going to take all her clothes off. It s great to have that
kind of control, that power, and it s an ego boost to have all girls competing with each other to
dance for you.
However empowered individual dancers might feel (and of course not all dancers are well paid)
lap dancing itself promotes the idea that women are not thinking whole beings but body parts
objects available for men to control and enjoy. 1
This new feminism also represents a shift from a collective to an individualistic approach to women
s equality. If a given woman feels oppressed, feels exploited, or feels demeaned, it is because
something is wrong with her. Perhaps she is not aggressive enough or not motivated enough. She
has not figured out how to advance within the current system. When women buy into the basic
concepts of capitalist culture, the

41. Father-Son Relationships In Death Of A Salesman By Arthur...
Great authors use characterization to further develop a character. In Arthur Miller s play, Death of
a Salesman , an old salesman named Willy pressures his eldest son, Biff, to become a successful
businessman. Through the different father son relationships, Willy s character develops. In the
play, Arthur Miller portrays father son relationships as detrimental to one s success by
characterizing Willy as desperate, demanding, and difficult. Miller s use of characterization in the
play shows how the absence of Willy s father affected him. Willy visits with his long lost brother
Ben, reminiscing on their childhood. Willy, knowing that his father left his familywhen he was only
a young boy, becomes obsessed with the idea of his father. Willy s father abandoned his family
when Ben and Willy were children and all Willy remembers is a man with a big beard, and I was

left, Willy has a positive memory of his father, idolizing him. Through Willy s idolization of his
dad, he begins to develop false hope of having a relationship with his dad. Begging Ben to please
tell about dad , Willy becomes characterized as someone who obsesses with the past and unable to
remain in the present (203). After Willy begs Ben to tell him more about their dad, Ben continues
to tell him about the admirable characteristics of his dad, who also made flutes more than a man

43. Moral Panics And Media Panics
Moral Panics and Media Panics
A moral panic is a phenomenon that is examined and understood in an unbiased fashion. This
type of panic locates a folk devil, is shared, remains out of synch with the seriousness it evokes,
and varies in intensity over time (Goode and Ben Yehuda, 41). On the other hand, a media panic
is a moral panic about the effects of a communications medium of technology (Class lecture:
January 27, 2016). Overall, a moral panic is based upon the reaction of society from an event
while a media panic is the reaction of society from a type of technology. This paper looks to
examine the similarities and differences between surveillance in the government today and
surveillance in the government during the Cold War. It will address the effects these events have or
had on society while examining specific media panics that played a role in society s reactions to
these historical events. By providing evidence to prove how these panics affect society, I will
examine why these moral and media panics exist and the impact they have had on society as a
whole.
A moral panic develops in a society when there is some type of threat looking to harm the society
in some way. The threat of a nuclear attack by the USSR and its possible plan to control society
through communism aided in the development of a moral panic during the Cold War era (Cold War
History). American fears continued to grow as the relationship between the two countries became
very tense (Hadley). During the

44. Compare And Contrast The Anglo Saxon Period And Present Day
Analyzing Yesterday s and Today s
The Anglo Saxon Period and Present Day
Travelling back in time to the period that is traditionally known as the dark ages; the time of war
and battles against the Vikings which was new invaders back then; the Anglo Saxon period has
many different aspects that are somehow unique to us. Such as how they have a different language
the Old English or how they greatly value the values of heroism, generosity and blood vengeance
which cannot be almost seen in the present time. There are many aspects that they have before, but
we will not focus on that. Instead, we will closely analyze the fact that by comparing it to the
present day, we can observe tremendous differences like how the power of woman was elevated
somehow today, the differences in our language, the Modern English to their language, Old
English, how the leader or the king should act before and even the dissimilarity in the social
hierarchy. But is the change in these aspects towards positivity? Or is it towards negativity? Are

45. Diesel Engines And Vehicle Performance Metrics Essay
In the automotive world, efficiency and power are two elements of vehicle performance metrics
that while important to many consumers and critics alike, appear to be elusive when in
convolution with one another. In automotive history, good fuel efficiency equaled compromises in
power and performance and vehicles with large displacements and torque usually had worse gas
mileage. The exception to this rule were diesel engines, which managed to combine better
efficiency than many four cylinder gas engines while providing very high torque number for better
performance. The main drawback that diesel s faced was due to their stigma of being dirty, as they
emitted more greenhouse gases including nitrous and sulfur oxides. Coupled with the stricter
emissions that many states began to implement, primarily overseen by the EPA, it became harder
for car manufactures to certify diesel engines for emissions while maintaining high fuel economy
and power output figures. The emission control hardware and software in diesel vehicles also came
at a high price and with increased complexity, both unwelcoming additions for any car company
wanting to mainstream diesel s. VolkswagenAutomotive Group (VAG) pledged to change these
preconceived notions concerning power and efficiency with the debut of the clean diesel
technology in 2008 within select models. These vehicles had miraculously managed to decrease
emissions out of vehicles with diesel motors while not compromising on the power and

47. Biblical Differences From The Noah s Ark Story In The Bible
Noah s Ark displays many differences from the Noah s Ark story in the bible. Although this is a
very good movie it does not follow the same storyline as the biblical story. There are many
examples throughout this film that is in the biblical version, however there lies many differences.
Many people looked at this movie and thought it was the exact same as the story in the bible. This
has become a very controversial topic for Christians specially.
As far as the book here are some key elements in the story. In the bible the rainbow is presented as a
heavenly sign or a sign of God. This also goes for the flood. The flood was a sign of God in the
bible. Noah s role in the bible story is to preserve all of the living things. God told him he was
sending a flood and Noah was to build up an ark and preserve the life that was about to be wiped
out completely by the flood God was sending. In the bible Noah didn t grab the animals and put
them on this ark they came on their own. Noah was there to attend them, but he did not physically
grab them and put them on this ark.
In the movie however some of these things differ. Not all of the biblical events were followed in
order. One of the small things that was out of place is when the birds were sent out. In the bible
the birds are sent out by Noah after they reached the mountain. In the film Noah s son sends out the
birds before they even reach the mountain. The movie was so out of the time line. They didn t even

48. Environmental Toxicity and Cancer
Cancer is the second most prevalent cause of death in the United States, accounting for 25% of all
deaths and more than 2,000 lives per day. There are over one hundred types of cancer and a number
of variables that contribute to the disease, but a 2010 report to the White House noted that the
burden of environmentally induced cancers has been grossly underestimated, for exposure to
environmental carcinogens (toxicity) occurs regularly in the home, the workplace and through
consumer products and lifestyle choices (Cancerand Toxic Chemicals, 2012).
In fact, environmental factors including smoke, nutrition, and exposure to carcinogens are
estimated to be responsible for up to 80% of all cancer deaths in the U.S. There is also a greater
potential for toxic materials to interact with human genetic and lifestyle to increase the risks of
blood born cancers. The potential for this toxicity remains critical, and under study. But the Centers
for Disease Control believe that the cancer burden caused by exposure to environmental
carcinogens to be even higher than currently reported (ATSDR, 2010).
One of the challenges surrounding scholarly work on toxicity and cancer is related to the number
of variables that may also contribute to cellular death. In addition, cancers from environmental
toxicity may take years or decades to fully develop, and some types of toxicity mimic other
afflictions. One such example is in the maternal transfer of heavy metals during fetal development
that

Gladiators and Modern Day Football
In our world today, do you believe football is the modern Roman gladiator sport for us today?
Many Americans believe so. American football has many similarities with gladiator games says
Garrett Fagan. (Associate professor of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies and History).
Gladiator games began as a ceremony to honor important men after their death, but it began to lose
its religious significance and it became more of a popular sport. Gladiator means a man trained to
fight with weapons against other men or wild animals in an arena. That s almost exactly like football
except you don t have weapons, you just use your body. NFL players are trained almost every
day to get bigger, faster, and stronger. Players have spent years of practicing techniques to
demolish their opponents. Gladiators fought for their lives. If they won their battle they would
become free, they could also get the wooden sword. NFL players do it to win a ring, but for the
most part they do it for the money. A man gets ready for game day. He puts on his helmet, his

Turner once called sports war without the killing, and, as Fagan sees it, football is rather like

This manner is that there is in each chapter an interesting story, followed by an analysis of the

of the problems. Throughout this there are dozens of seemingly unconnected anecdotes that
manage to tie themselves into the greater problem. For example, the first chapter, titled how is a

Despite saying that she dislikes prostitution, she admits she would do a lot more if it payed twice
as much. The chapter follows this up with a history of prostitution in Chicago. It discusses how
women were likely to become prostitutes because it payed so much more. Then the chapter
analyzes why it payed so much more by going into the supply and demand of the field. Sex was in
high demand. Prostitutes were in low supply. Therefore it was a high paying job. Overtime, as the
stigma increased and casual sex became the social norm, demand lowered, and now the modern
prostitute makes a fraction of what prostitutes made a hundred years ago. After much more
