Deborah Tannen And Gender
Deborah Tannen is an American academic and professor of linguistics at Georgetown University in
Washington, D.C. Her research mainly focuses on the expression of interpersonal relationships in
conversational interactions, including how these interactions are affected by gender and cultural
differences. In her essay Tannen uses genderto reveal the differences between maleand female
conversational styles in classroom discussions. She formulates the theory that males naturally
prefer and dominate contributions to these debate like discussions while females incline to
contribute to less hostile conversations. Tannen presents her argument effectively using simple
vocabulary and appropriate literary devices however, as the essay progresses she... Show more

However, Tannen does not consider it in her research. What makes a male or a female dominate
discussions in class is more or less reliant on their personality. In a regular classroom there are
innumerable personalities that contradict each other and similarly those who do not participate in
debating at all, regardless of sex. It all depends on the personality of a person while Tannen
ignoring this aspect proposes a clichГ©d approach where males tend to dominate females in
discussions and then provides vague and insufficient supports to justify her

Julia Harris And Artur Samarin In The Great High School...
Everyone does crazy things. Sometimes, people cannot control themselves from acting out or
doing things that could harm others. Julia Snyde, the unsub from Gentlemen and Players by
Joanne Harris and Artur Samarin from The Great High School Impostor by Daniel Riley are
portrayed as evil people because they both make selfish decisions that hurt others around them to
fulfil their motives of extracting revenge on St Oswald s and having a comfortable life in the US
respectively. But that is just one side of the story. They have had very difficult upbringings and
have never felt loved. Julia Snyde and Artur Samarin are both portrayed as selfish and vicious by
their actions. But, their actions are a result of PTSD caused by spending their childhood... Show

But, this does not work in either case as the relationships formed are emotionally damaging and
even illegal in the case of Artur. While pretending to be a boy to attend St Oswald s, Julia Snyde
meets Leon and immediately falls in love with him. But, Leon does not feel the same way. In
fact, even when he knows that Julia is in love with him, he continues to play with her emotions
and makes her spend time around him when he is with Francesa, his new girlfriend. Leon is a
vain, self centred teenager who enjoys tormenting Julia. Leon knows that Julia does not enjoy
being around Francesa. But, he forces her to. Snyde said that she had a shack... it was there that
we went, I keeping watch, smoking and trying not to listen to the sounds that came from the
little shack behind me (Harris 213). Leon makes Julia Snyde keep watch while he was sexual
intercourse with Francesa just a few feet away. Only a sick, mentally unstable human would do
such things. He subjects both Julia and Francesa to a feeling of him wanting the other and
mentally torments Julia as she has to watch the love of her life, be with another girl and she can t
do anything about it. This affects Julia so heavily that she is never able to have a good relationship
with anyone in her life without feeling insecure about herself. In fact, she harms or pushes people
away before that can do the same to her. She

Theodore Roosevelt Open Door Policy
During the late eighteenth century and the early nineteenth century foreign policies began to
change a lot. Theodore Roosevelt became president in 1901 and started implementing new
foreign policies such as the Big Stick Policy and the Open Door Policy . The Big Stick Policy
was a policy that was for peaceful negation while having a strong military for support. The Open
Door Policy was a policy that stated that all counties should have equal access to any Chinese port
open to trade. In my opinion these foreign policies made U.S. relations with foreign countries better.

The boxers didn t like how foreign countries were influencing China. At the time China had been
weakened by war and foreign intervention. Britain, France, Germany, Russia, and Japan all had
established settlements along Chinas coast. The nations influenced China while maintaining
strict economic control. The US. Began to fear that in the future China would be a part of
European colonies that were closed to American products and companies. The U.S. relied
strongly on trade for their economy. The U.S. Secretary of state John Hay issued Open Door
Policy notes which stated that all counties should have equal access to any Chinese port open to
trade. As foreign intervention continued to grow so did resentment from the Chinese. Large
parts of China were completely under foreign control. Groups started to form in China that
wanted to get rid of foreign control. The most famous group was called the Boxers, the boxers
tried to get all foreigners out of China. They killed hundreds of missionaries and any Chinese
people who had converted to Christianity. The U.S. send troops along with troops from Britain,
France, Germany, Russia, and Japan to stop the Boxer Rebellion. The Boxer Rebellion ended and
John Hay issued a second series of Open Door notes stating that the U.S. would protect the
principle of open trade for all nations in the Chinese empire.

Self-Destruction In Hamlet
Hamlet, a tragic hero with a feigned madness seeking revenge for his deceased father, kills
everyone in his path and finally succeeded in taking vengeance for the murder of his father by
killing the murderer, Claudius for good. Hamlet s consistent desire to seek revenge for his father s
murderer, led him to foreseeable yet tragic downfall. In Hamlet, Shakespeare utilizes the acts of
revenge throughout the play to show self destruction and confliction in through characters such as
Hamlet.
The theme of revenge causing self destruction is established in act two of the book by Hamlet
himself. Hamlet proclaims: O, vengeance! Why, what an ass am I! This is most brave, That I,
the son of a dear father murder d, Prompted to my revenge by heaven and hell, Must, like a
whore, unpack my heart with words, And fall a cursing, like a very drab, A stallion! Fie upon t!

decision is strictly based off of what is the more morale option (which seems to be another
common theme in Hamlet). In Hamlet s self conflicting soliloquy he is also facing self destruction

stems from the inner guilt he withholds from not taking revenge on Claudius yet. He starts to
question if it is just better to kill himself than to do his original deed and avenge his father s death,

The Effects Of Video Games On Pop Culture
Around the middle of the 20th Century man cultures started to grow beyond what they previously
were thanks to different mediums (such as television and music) helping to push boundaries; with
this came the birth of pop culture. Considering pop culture is a shortened version of popular
culture it s clear that many of the things in pop culture would be short lived. The short lived
trends and happenings are labeled as fads . Strangely enough, some fads are made to transform and
actually become a mainstay in the varying international cultures. One such example might be
familiar as it is common in today s society. This example is, indeed, video games. When video
games were first being introduced to the general public they weren t all that... Show more content on

This led to a market that was flooded with consoles and left many consumers confused. Adding
to this confusion was the fact that there wasn t many reliable sources for game information. The
market was overwhelmed with lackluster and poorly made games and no one was being
informed as to which games these were. So eventually people just stopped buying games. All of
this mixed with Atari manufacturing too many console units and games led to a market crash
many call The Video Game Crash of 83 causing many to label video games as a dying fad. Several
years had passed and a Japanese company by the name of Nintendo decided it wanted to enter the
market. Nintendo s Family Computer, or Famicom, was doing well in Japan and Nintendo wanted
to try and find success in North America. This proved to be difficult because America was still
wary on the idea of game consoles after the crash. To try and avoid the skepticism that came with
items labeled as a game console, Nintendo rebranded the Famicom as the Nintendo Entertainment
System and marketed it as a toy. Believe it or not, this actually worked and Nintendo became a
household name. In order to keep their success going Nintendo took steps to avoid another market
crash. Nintendo would put developers under a contract that kept them on their console and would
keep them from developing games for developers. Developers also had a limited amount of games
they could release in a year as

Similarities Between Lord Of The Flies And The Hunger Games
District 12. Where you can starve to death in safety (6). This is a quote from the book The
Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, and it is a prime example of the dystopian society the book
is set in. Another book set in a dystopian society is Lord of the Flies, by William Golding. The
Hunger Games is a book about a society where every year, 24 people are sent to fight to the death
in the HungerGames. Lord of the Flies is about a big group of young children getting trapped on
an island and having to figure out how to survive on their own without any adults. Both the novel
Lord of The Flies and the book The Hunger Games present societies that are vicious and cruel, in
similar settings, even though there are some differences between the two stories. One similarity
between both books is the use of fire. At the beginning of Lord of the Flies fire is used to try to
give a signal to passing ships that there are children trapped on the island. If a ship comes near
the island they may not be able to notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We
must make a fire (33). At the beginning of The Hunger Games fire is used to gain the Capitol s
attention during the ceremony where all tributes ride on chariots. I want the audience to
recognize you when you re in the arena, says Cinna dreamily. Katniss, the girl who was on fire
(67). In both situations, fire is used to gain attention of people who will be able to help them in
the future, whether it s giving them a gift during the Games, or rescuing them. However, later on
in the stories fire is used differently. At the end of Lord of the Flies, Jack s group uses fire to try
to burn down the forest in order to find and kill Ralph. The fire was a big one and the drum roll
that he had thought had left so far behind was nearer (182). This quote is from a part when Ralph
is hiding in the currently burning down forest, trying to escape from Jack. In The Hunger Games,
fire is used to burn down part of the arena for the Games, in order to bring Katniss closer to the
other tributes. This fire is designed to flush us out, to drive us together (173). One difference
between the two books is the idea of unique appearances. In Lord of the Flies, there is the

The Hound Of Baskervilles By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Essay

Crime is as old as humanity itself, and the first crime committed by man according to Christianity
is that of Cain killing Abel. Throughout the recorded history, the human past is significantly littered
with criminal activities including mass murder, wars, and genocides. Moreover, beginning the 18th
century, historians have pointed at new forms of crimes that target specific groups of people like a
particular ethnicity or family (Cassell, Mitchell, and Edwards, pp. 59 103). Thus, in his book The
Hound of Baskervilles, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle attempts to exploit the theme of crime through the
application of the modern perspective of crime investigation and prevention by enlisting the
expertise of crime detectives. From The Hound of Baskervilles, it is evident that the war against
crime can only be won when there is a combination of public cooperation and keen analysis of
evidence by the crime detection unit (Bunker, pp. 129 137).
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle begins his book with a small mystery when Dr. Watson Sherlock Holmes
speculate on the owner of a walking stick that had been left in their office by an unidentified visitor.
Holmes predicts the appearance of James Mortimer, the owner of the cane, wowing Watson with his
supreme observation power (Arthur, pp. 10 250). The plot then shifts to Mortimer entering the
office and unveiling the 18th century manuscript and recounting the myth of the lecherous Hugo

Media s Effect On The Black Society
Media has a detrimental effect on the black society. Blacks have very little, if any control in
what the media displays. How many African American Television network companies are there?
How many African American Television companies are competing with the big named
companies who rack in millions or billions of dollars? It is logical to say whomever controls the
media, controls the mind. Television is a common form of media . A lot of things that we watch
has been carefully hand picked and crafted for blacks but not by blacks. There are currently no
Black owned television networks. The question is; who is feeding our minds? Television network
companies are almost completely dominated by middle aged to elderly Caucasian male. Many
may assume that BET is black owned; however as of 2001 BET has been taken over by Viacom .
Who owns Viacom? Sumner Redstone, an elderly Caucasian male. BET is the most prominent
network in targeting Black households and reaches over 90 Million households. Having no black
owned television networks lead to a non black persons perception of black peopleand black culture.
This displays a fabricated experience and idealism of what these networks think black people are
or should be. It is equivalent to an individual making a documentary on what it is like being Oprah
Winfrey but they are not Oprah. Winfrey. (Viacom Accquires BET, 2015)

Cesare Beccaria s Impact On America
Government policies in America come from a variety of sources. But the philosophers who
made the most impact are Cesare Beccaria and Baron de Montesquieu. Beccaria believed in a
competent justice system. His philosophy is the basis for the US justice system. Beccaria lived
in Italy from 1738 to 1794. Baron de Montesquieu believed in the separation of power and checks
and balances. His real name is Charles Louis de Secondat and he lived in France from 1689 to
1755. These philosophers shaped the future in front of them. Another example of someone shaping
the literary universe is William Golding. He wrote the Lord of the Flies in 1954. Lord of the Flies

Cesare Beccaria was dead set against unfair punishments. He believed that the punishments
should fit the crime. (Cesare Beccaria) For example, if a person is caught stealing bread, and the
court decrees his hand should be cut off, he will have to steal again because he is unable to feed
his family with one hand. He also believed in abolishing the death penalty. Because the boys do
not establish a competent justice system, as Cesare Beccaria argued any effective government
must, they fall into a state of anarchy. Jack s actions are a perfect example of the failure of the
boys to have a justice system. After he lets the fire go out, Piggy and Ralph tear into him. He
cannot bear the truth of his actions and turns to the only way of coping he knows preying on the
weak. This from Piggy, and the wails of agreement from some of the hunters, drove Jack to
violence. The bolting look came into his blue eyes. He took a step, and able at last to hit
someone, stuck his fist into Piggy s stomach (Golding 71). His violence in a society today would
not be condoned. He would be brought up in front of the proper authorities. Unfortunately, on the
island, there are no proper authorities. The justice system is nonexistent. This allows Jack to
continue doing wrong things without fear of repercussions. This causes the island to fall into a
state of anarchy because no one is afraid of breaking the law. They do whatever they want,
whenever they want. Eventually this leads to the boys killing their kin for they have no

Massachusetts Calvin Coolidge In The 1920 s
The first quarter of twentieth century America was the height of labor reform and mass striking.
Many people associate industrial striking with laborers such as miners and factory workers, but
even higher level jobs were covered by the looming veil of rebellion and reform. September of 1919
was a violent and chaotic time for the city of Boston, as the local policeforce stood aside to let
criminals and rioters do the heavy lifting towards a better working standard. While the police force
did not quite get what they desired, it put then governor of Massachusetts Calvin Coolidgein the
national spotlight.

such as payroll, hours, and responsibilities. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Due to the lack of peacekeeping experience in the volunteers, they had no other option than to
open fire on the crowds. In total, nine people were dead by sunrise (Source 2). After the second

Times, writing ...no man s house, no man s wife, no man s children will be safe if the police

Coolidge would have no sympathy for the strikers, calling them deserters and traitors , despite a
fair number of them being World War 1 veterans that defended The United States and its ideals
overseas. Even Samuel Gompers, the chief of the AFL was worried with what would happen
next if he couldn t persuade the Boston police to return tot he bargaining table before more
people and property could be harmed. Curtis would not sway to his neutral suggestion and refused
the officers a chance to work for the force again. The entire force was replaced after this incident.

Next, his Mandan Buffalo Robe also shows his understanding of history and the arts. Most
painted robes were used as traditional clothing and articles of trade for Native Americans. Some
of these robes are painted with a scene usually a scene that the person receiving the robe fought
in. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark sent a package to Thomas Jefferson filled with seven
buffalo robes one that had a painted scene. Putting a piece from a famous expedition shows that
he is aware that he must preserve a piece of history so that s other can look back at this piece of

this part of him.
Jefferson s love of people and games are evident in the parlor room. The Parlor Room was filled

Positive Role Model In To Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee
A positive role model is an individual who possesses positive qualities, such as empathy and
integrity, and does good for the betterment of others, which, as a result, influences others to follow
their example. A role model s actions and lessons can help shape a child s views, morals and
beliefs, which, in turn, affect their identity as well as their actions and behaviour towards those
around them. The novel, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, is set in the fictional town of
Maycomb, Alabama, where racial discrimination and narrow mindedness run rampant. In the novel,
Lee showcases the impact and influence that role models can have on a child through the

Ecological Destruction And Redemption In Avatar
Avatar is a 2009 film of the epic science fiction genre, written and directed by James Cameron. It
has been described as one of the greatest and most influential films of all time by many movie
critics and has been awarded three Academy Awards. In the film, James Cameron conveys multiple
key ideas, such as the dangers of ecological destruction and betrayal and redemption, through
various stylistic features including character development, symbolism and costuming. The filmwas
created to make the audience realise what the humans have done and will continue doing to their
own planet. It also makes the audience sympathise with the Na vi and want to be different to the
humans that were shown in the film.

This concept is shown through many stylistic features including character development and
costumes. When Jake Sully first agrees to go on the mission as a bodyguard to protect Dr Grace
Augustine and Norm Spellman, he was only interested in the money to cure his paraplegia, but
as Jake becomes more involved with the Na vi he realises preserving the planet of Pandora is
more important than money. He gains the trust of the Na vi and even becomes an official
member of the clan. When the Sky People attack for the first time, Jake admits that he knew that
this was going to happen and that he was sent there to spy on them and to try to move them out
of their home saying, Yes. Look, at first, it was just orders, and then, everything changed. Okay? I
fell in love. I fell in love with the with the forest, with the Omaticaya people... with you... with
you... The clan becomes angry at Jake and stops trusting him. Jake attempts to regain their trust by
flying the Toruk and becoming Toruk Makto, when he lands, he is shown through a low angle
shot which depicts his new power. When the clan sees the Toruk they immediately trust Jake again
and listen to his plan to fight against the Sky People . Costumes are another main stylistic feature
used to convey the key idea of betrayal and redemption. As Jake starts to regain the Na vi s trust he
begins to wear more cultural clothing and accessories, symbolising how he is beginning to

Violence in Hockey
Hockey has always been known to be a physical sport; it is full of body checks, hits from behind,
sometimes the misuse of the hockey stick, and even fights. Now all off these are deemed
acceptable by hockey fans to a certain extent. When a player swings his stick at another player
and an injury occurs to the opposing man the instigator can usually expect to be penalized for a
short amount of time, maybe even a suspension from the team for a few games. But when does
this violent act on the ice become a criminal offence? Does it take for the recipient to break his
neck, or maybe even loose his vision for us to take a serious look at what happened and realize
that this is not what we are looking to watch when we sit down to watch a game.... Show more

The fact of the matter is the player intended on injuring his opponent when he shouldn t because
that is not in the job description. They need to hammer this into the athletes heads, even if you are
doing it to protect another teammate, retaliation cannot be stood for no matter what. When you
step on the rink you should only have one thing on your mind and that is to win. There is no
reason for anyone in any professional sport to go onto the playing surface with intention to injure
someone else out there. They do not get paid to hurt people they get paid to play the game just like
teachers get paid to teach. When the players drop the gloves they do that knowing they are
subjected to injury, however that is a part of the game that is against the rules and could result in
an injury but both players are aware of what is going on. A sucker punch or a stick over the head
only has one of the players aware of what is happening and leaves the other one subjected to major
injuries.
Stick swinging seems to be one of the favoured В‘cheap shots in the hockey. There are many
reoccurring happenings of this offence and it needs to be stopped. It happens more then we hear
about because we only hear about the major ones where the receiving player obtains a mild injury.
The normal penalty for stick swinging is a minor suspension but no legal action is taking place for
these minor offences. In order to cut down on these things need to be done.

avoid going head to head with the competition and expand to new markets. One of the reasons
behind pursuing such a strategy is for a first mover advantage, early brand creation, more time
understanding the markets before competition arrives, and more profits for the company. So how
do growth strategies differ for small and big sized companies? Using these two examples let me
discuss the different approaches of growth strategies of a big and small sized company. References:

Democracy In J. Allen Smith s The Spirit Of American...
Discussion Democracy flourished in America where it had previously floundered in Europe. As
early as 1907, J. Allen Smith attributed this to the fact that the colonists were more active,
enterprising, and dissatisfied than the typical Englishman, in his work The Spirit of American
Government,. He noted that the Revolutionary War was not sparked by colonists hating the
monarchical system, but by the negative relationship between England and its newest colony. This
attitude, coupled with an active revolution, created the perfect outlet for democratic theory to be
expressed and enacted (Smith, 1907; Thoman, n.d.). In creating an independent nation, the founding
fathers looked to various forms of government, both ancient and modern, for inspiration.

It is peculiar as to why J.K. Rowling chose to place the scar upon Harry s forehead. The source of
thought and reason. Perhaps, it was to somehow inflict Voldemort s values and beliefs into
Harry s mind to join the Death Eaters, so that way the Lord could ensure one of his horcruxes
safety. Makes sense as to why Voldemort never killed nor could kill Harry or else he d lose a
fragment of himself. The meaning of lightning bolt has meant power evident in the God of
Gods: Zeus. Even in the anime One Piece, it is even said that the one power mankind has never
overpowered was lightning. You can draw the energy to a lightning rod however its powers are
evident. To be struck by lightning usually means death because the body cannot handle the one
billion joules of energy a bolt creates. Therefore, it is almost unheard of that Harry Potter survived
such a traumatic experience of being stuck by Voldemort s dark magic symbolically equal to
lightning. Is to withstand lightning equivalent to overcoming nature? This ability is certain to be
deemed utter madness, for in all of history human have been at the hand of nature. We cannot live
through an Ice Age, survive a hurricane nor live to tell the tale of the beauty and terror of an

Hard To Pay For College Essay
Nowadays it s hard to get a degree and even harder to pay for. In the article How to Pay for
College , it says that with hard work students can earn scholarships, apply for financial aid,
finance loans, and take on a part time job to pay for college. However, there is plenty of evidence
proving otherwise. Due to the rising costs of tuition and the restrictions to getting financial aid, it is
almost impossible for lower and middle class citizens to afford college. Loans leave students in debt
and scholarships are not always a sure thing. With a part time job, putting in too many hours of
work can interfere with ones sleep and actual study time. Recently a study was done on the
average college students ability to pay for college with a part time job. Randy Olsen, a computer
science graduate research assisstant at Michigan State University, crunched the numbers for both
Michigan State and all public universities in the U.S. The average tuition cost at an in state
public university is $8,709 not including room and board, books and supplies, personal care, and
transportaton fees. Research shows that the amount of hours needed to work to pay for college
tuition with a part time minimum wage job has more than tripled since the year 1979. It is now a
lot harder to work your way through college than it was 37 years ago. Many people in America
miss the chance at pursuing a higher education. This is not because they lack talent or they do not

The Recession Of The United States Recession
Recession is termed as a period of temporary economic decline during which trade and industrial
activity are reduced, generally identified by a fall in GDP in two successive quarters. Based on
the complete recession that took place few important points that I could gather in specific
considering each type of recession are listed below. How it took place? Causes for it and what
impact it had on the audience. Let me discuss about this in brief.
The recession of 1937 38 is usually known as the recession at intervals Depression. It came at a
time once the recovery from the good Depression was aloof from complete and therefore the per
centum was still terribly high. In fact, it had been a fatal natural event to the recovery. Real value
fell 11 November and industrial production fell thirty second, creating it the third worst United
States recession within the twentieth century (after 1929 32 and 1920 21).
The recession is usually attributed to a adjustment of business enterprise and financial policy.
Christina Romer (2009) has argued that it s relevant to today s scenario as a result of it illustrates
the risks of a premature withdrawal of stimulant once the economy remains weak. But the
recession remains somewhat of a mystery as a result of the 2 most often mentioned causes the
reduction within the business enterprise deficit and also the Federal Reserve s call to double
reserve needs don t seem to possess been powerful enough to get a recession of the magnitude seen.

THE WILD WEST OF AMERICA The Wild West of America, or what historian referred to as the
Old West, since the 1800 s men and women all wanted to move to the west to start a new life,
have land, find gold and silver ,and to escape the law hence the Wild West. The West of the U.S.
started off from the west of the Mississippi all the way to the west coast. With all the open land
and the people in the west, legends and stories are being made throughout time, and these stories are
for the future generation to hear about the adventurous time of the Wild Wild West. From the
beginning of time, people have told stories of their adventures, survival, the crazy gunfights, and the
danger they been through in the west. Most of these stories and tales starts off at campfires, where
is told to friends and families about their experience. Sometimes these tales were true, others
exaggerations, and occasionally nothing more than some crazy tales which seems too good or too
outrageous to be true. The more interesting part of these tales were passed along from friends to
friends and from one generation to the next, and along the way the tales grows stronger to the point
they became legends and urban myths. With all the story tellings through the years, it becomes a
small part of history and then in popular culture. Where it turns into music, dance, movies, tv
shows, and cultures. For two centuries the Wild West was molded into the american s culture that

To initiate the discussion about this possibility, the perspectives of multiple science, technology,
educational and societal interests will be included. The possibilities for disenfranchised
communities to engage in this practice to get them out of poverty in remote locations with the
appropriate access to technological education makes of this problem an interesting and
compelling one. The PI presents a list of initial questions that for sure could be further refined
through the online meetings with the initial team he has assembled. Some of them are: How
should Micro Manufacture operations be organized? How do we prepare workers to have the
flexible range of skills and knowledge to function in Micro Manufacture concerns? How do we
design products and processes suited to efficient Micro Manufacture? What are the units of
modularity to support the range of products that may be produced? How do we evolve supply
chains to handle the highly fragmented supply graphs that may be endemic of distributed Micro
Manufacturing? The online engagement is certainly needed, as the questions need to be narrowed
down, and perhaps make of this the first of a couple of workshops. One building on the second.
The first one to engage social scientists, particularly economist, and supply chain experts as well as
education researchers in a discussion of the impact of micro manufacturing in the economy at

Film Autuerism Essay
Film Autuerism Auteurism is a term first coined by Francois Truffaut to describe the mark of a
film director on his films. A director can be considered an auteur if about five of his film depict a
certain style that is definitely his own. In other words, much like one can look at a painting and
tell if it is a Monet, a Renoir, or a Degas, if a film director is an auteur, one can look at his film and
tell by style and recurring themesthat it was made by a certain director. In auteur films, the director
is many times what brings an audience to the theater, instead of the actors or storyline. I am going
to take a look at three of the most noted auteurs: Frederico Fellini, Satyajit Ray, and Alfred
Hitchcock.
I watched five of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In all of the films, the husband and wife have difficulty communicating with each other. One
scene in City of Women visually shows this with multiple barriers: physical (a column and
doorway), spatial (the characters are on opposite sides of the screen) and social (a crown with
turned backs). In Juliet of the Spirits, Julieta is the superwife. She plays all of the above stated
roles, and also it is apparent that she has her own interior life. This is shown by the use of mirrors
and reflections within reflections.
The final character archetype that I noticed in Fellini s films is the macho man. This is probably
best illustrated in the harem sequence in 8 1/2. In this the main character imagines himself as the
master of all women he has ever desired, real or fantasized. In City of Women the doctor is the
idealized male stereotype who now has to deal with women s increasing independence. I do not
think that this character was as effective, however, in showing this archetype as much as the harem
sequence did. In La Strada the male character is kept a prisoner by these male virtues he cannot
communicate his own feelings.
Fellini definitely has many trademarks, but I chose these to write about because they are the least
remarked upon. But, surely when one watches any Fellini film, there is a definite look and feel to
the movie, making Fellini a true auteur.
The next auteur that I studied

Hall s studies of child development of children, adolescents, and of old age designed a roadway
for some of the famous psychologist to study their own children for research purposes. Jean Piaget
(1896 1980) conducted a research study of his own children to the stages of cognitive development.
The research that Piaget conducted indicated that the children were an organism that has the
tendency to grasps to certain environments. He also suggested that children tend to go through the
same stages of development and there seem to be no individual differences. The stages that Piaget
used to conduct his research were the sensorimotor stage (0 2), the pre operational stage (2 7), the
concrete operational stage (7 11), and the formal operational stage (11 15). In the sensorimotor stage
(0 2), the child is entirely egocentric; everything is a reflection of them. The children cannot
determine the difference amongst themselves and the environment. At this stage the children have
no recollection of the past and the future; each may focus on what is going on at that moment in
time. The children may rely on the senses of sight, touch, and hearing. Cognitive psychologists
believe that babies may rely on determinist behaviors, such as sucking, crawling, and watching
(Greenwood, 2009). In this study the children are unaware that objects do not cease to exist when it

In his view, the entrepreneur is a revolutionary innovator that requires aptitudes that are present
only in a small fraction of the population (Schumpeter, 1946, p.132). These aptitudes include; a
strong intellectual capacity, drive and determination, creativity, and leadership skills (Schumpeter,
1934). Schumpeter (1934, p.74) states that the carrying out of new combinations we call enterprise

Schumpeter views entrepreneurs as innovators; however, it is important to note that Schumpeter
(1934, p.88) only views those that commercially exploit their creations as innovators, declaring as
long as they [inventions] are not carried into practice, inventions are economically irrelevant. For
Schumpeter, it is the commercial exploitation of these new inventions, created by the innovators
that he refers to as entrepreneurs, which drive economic development (Fig.2). This is because, in
the process of exploiting this new creation, be it an invention or new production method, the
entrepreneur breaks the economy out of its static equilibrium, disturbing what

The overall issue for Carmax is their decline in growth. The company would like to continue to
expand, but tough, copycat competition is debilitating it s growth within the country. Their
disruptive model allowed them to become the leader within their market. So their fear is that a
future company could disrupt their business model, just like Best Buy did to their parent company

Department: As mentioned in the issue analysis the margin received from this by CarMax is very
high. It receives more than 14% than its closest competitor (Penske). Target Market: Customers
who have bought cars from CarMax in the past. Key Actions: In order to attract more customers to
purchase the services and parts from CarMax, they should offer attractive bundles to customers
when buying a car. When the customers buy a car, they can include service for an additional fee
which will be more lucrative than buying the service individually. This might seem more lucrative

Potassium Hexacyanoferrate Lab Report
Why Potassium Hexacyanoferrate (III)
I chose to write this paper on potassium Hexacyanoferrate(III) because its inorganic chemical
formula is almost seem similar to Prussiate blue. Prussiate Blue exhibits interesting structural
characteristics and properties. My aim is to explore if potassium Hexacyanoferrate (III) exhibit the
similar properties and characteristics as prussiate blue.
Introduction
The Potassium Hexacyanoferrate (III) is one of the common salts of the ferricyanide. Its chemical
structure is K3[Fe(CN)6], and its common name is potassium ferricyanide.1The coordination
complex is also known under names such as red prussiate of potash, or red potassium prussiate.
Potassium ferricyanide appears as a bright red soluble crystalline ... Show more content on

In addition, ferricyanide is toxic with LD50 value equal to 6400 mg/kg.4 Potassium ferricyanide
salt has been isolated as ruby red crystals and is photosensitive.5 Potassium ferricyanide has the
ability to react with metallic silver to produce silver ferrocyanide, which is used in photography
processes.5 Since potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) is a cyanide, it reacts explosively with
sodium nitrite and oxidizes ammonia explosively. Acids, in particular strong acids react with
potassium ferricyanide to form ferricyanic acid, which decomposes to form toxic hydrogen
cyanide. Additional physical characteristics of potassium fericyanide are that it is water soluble
and can also exist as crystals as well as in powder form, and decomposes when heated.5 Its vapor
pressure at 200 C is negligible and it is one of the most stable cyanide complexes.7Potassium
ferricyanide is poorly oxidized by active chlorine, ozone, and potassium permangante.7 Its
maximum allowable concentration is 1.25 mg/L and the oxidation of potassium ferricyanide at pH

The Waste Of The State Of America s Food Waste
Mr. Wisland, I have been doing research on food waste in Athens, Ohio. The goal of my
research is to find a plausible solution to the waste. To begin the gathering of information, I
searched through the Ohio University ArticlesPlus Database to find any journals that I could
find pertaining to the state of America s food waste, how we can make a difference, and what
has already been implemented to make a change. This was my way of looking at the amount of
food wasted from a bigger perspective. I found four sources on the issue as a whole, to which I
have included in my annotated bibliography. All sources have a primary focus on statistics of food
waste in America, and finding a solution to the problem that we have created. The statistics... Show

The easiest way to reach all consumers at large would to host media campaigns through
commercials, television, news articles, and anything else along those lines. It is vital that
consumers learn because around 73% of consumers think that they waste less than the average
person, however, there is still over $165 billion worth of food wasted. From there, I knew that I
had to dig into food waste just a bit deeper to find the information that I needed pertaining to
Athens, Ohio. I searched for sustainability and food waste programs or groups on Ohio University s
campus to find out just how bad food waste is in our town. I found two different groups: Athens
Food Rescue, and Athens Hocking Recycling Center. Both of these groups have a similar mission,
and that is to reduce food waste, promote environmental health, and building a community around
the food in Athens county that would normally be thrown away. Athens Food Rescue was one of
my favorite groups to listen to as they collect surplus food from places around Athens and
redistribute it to the homeless, hungry, or low income people. In my opinion, this is the best
solution to food waste in Athens, as we are living in one of the most low income towns in all of
Ohio. I learned that Athens Hocking Recycling Center offers compost services throughout all of
Hocking and Athens. They offer five, seven, or

Individuality In Anthem
Ego a person s sense of self esteem or self importance. Also known as the forbidden word of the
totalitarian society created by Ayn Rand in Anthem. In Rand s 1938 novel, her main character,
Equality 7 2125 unknowingly followed the path of individuality, which was against the wishes of
society. Proving that knowledge is a product of the observations and mental integrations of
individuals, he rebelled against the ideals his society chained him with. He found his ego and sense
of self, amidst a world who deemed it a sin to do so. Through the point of view/narration, themes,
characterization and conflicts, Rand wanted to convey the dangers of a failed government, and the
need for individuality.
When beginning the novel, Rand uses a first person point of view, yet instead of the common
plural forms of, I and My , she has the narrator use, We and Our. Equality was taught that
individuality didn t exist, and instead that all men must be alike, therefore there is only, we. Upon
reading this, it seems as if Rand was writing about multiple people, yet this is how the society
must address themselves, because no man gets singled out. The plural forms remain the same,
until the beginning of chapter eleven, where Equality finally discovers the form of, I . This type
of narration allowed the ideals of society to be made apparent, and progressed the plot in Equality s
search of individuality.
Individualism and collectivism are two core themes that are present in the novel. It s as if these
two themes work against each other, in order to obtain individuality, you must get rid of
collectivism, and vice versa. As Equality lives through his days, he discovers his unspoken lover,
the Golden One , and begins to explore egotistical thoughts, where his curiosity grew even greater.
In chapter nine, Equality began finally discovering individuality, where he was torn on finding the
certain word that society had hidden. And we felt torn, torn for some word we could not find.
(Rand 112) In the beginning of chapter eleven, after finding a home from the unmentionable times,
he had discovered individuality within the form of I , and his mind opened up to the many great
things of this world. Equality discovering individuality

Inflammation and Cancer
ABSTRACT
According to the most recent evidence, there is a direct link between chronic inflammation and
certain types of cancer. Inflammation generally occurs due to a bacterial or viral infection, such as
a chronic bladder infection, which over time may be more susceptible to bladder cancer. This is
especially true for individuals who are overweight or obese, or exhibit disorders like diabetes,
hepatitis A and B, HIV/AIDS, and other bacterial/viral disorders.
INTRODUCTION
The links between cancer and inflammation, being the protective response of the tissues of the
human body to irritation caused by an injury, a virus, or bacteria, and which may be acute or ...

In addition, micro organisms like microbes which includes bacteria, viruses, protozoa, fungi, and
other microbial life forms (Glanze 754) may cause cancer due to opportunistic infection, such as in
Kaposi s sarcoma (Herpes virus 8) and gastric cancer (i.e., cancer of the stomach), caused by H.
pylori bacterium which can also affect the human colon via long standing inflammatory bowel
diseases caused by microflora or certain types of fungus (Nahoun, Why Cancer and Inflammation? ).
Inflammation has also been shown to exacerbate the conditions necessary for developing certain
types of lung cancer. As noted by Nahoun, medical conditions associated with chronic irritation and
subsequent inflammation are often predisposed to cancer. A prime example of this phenomenon is
cigarette smoking which often causes inflammation in the lungs via diseases like sarcoidosis, a
chronic disorder of unknown origin characterized by the formation of tubercles tissue in the lungs.
In some cases, sarcoidosis as an inflammatory disorder can be found in the spleen, liver, mucous
membranes, the salivary glands, and the lymph glands (Glanze

Jesus In The Chronicles Of Narnia
Aslan, in the Chronicles of Narnia, represents Jesus for many reasons. One main reason is that
Aslan gives his life to save Edmund in the same way that Jesus sacrificed his own life to save us.
Edmund was known as a traitor and the only way to remove that label was to get blood.
Similarly, the only way to pay the price of sin is for a sinless person to die. Aslan s death itself
parallels Jesus . When Aslan gives himself up for Edmund, the White Witchhas him tied up and
bound to the table, which is meant for a traitor. All the creatures on her side mock and beat Aslan.
The White Witch calls him Aslan the Great . In the same way, Jesus gives up his life for us. He is
nailed to a cross, which is meant for a criminal, mocked and beaten. A sign... Show more content on

There are also two girls and two boys, likewise, Noah took two of each animal on the ark. When
Lucy first goes to Narnia she meets Mr. Tumnus who takes her back to his house for tea. He then
begins to play an instrument and while he plays Lucy starts to see creatures dancing in the fire.
When she falls asleep a lion s face jumps out of the fire and fire goes out. This reminds me of
when Jesus rebukes demons and sends them out of people. The White Witch likes to call herself
the Queen of Narnia and think she is more powerful than Aslan but she is not. Likewise, Satan
likes to believe that he is more powerful than Jesus, but he too is not. After Peter, Susan, Lucy,
and the Beavers realize that Edmund is gone and that he most likely is going to the White Witch
they frantically pack up and leave the Beaver s dam. This is similar to when the Israelites flee
Egypt in the exodus. Like the Israelites had to cross the Red Sea, the Pevensies and the Beavers
cross the Great River while it is un thawing. The Witch s wolves are chasing them and drown like
the Egyptian soldiers. Mr. Beaver tells Peter, Susan, and Lucy that only Aslan can save Edmund
much like only Jesus can save us. When Aslan goes to the Witch s castle after he comes back to
life, he breathes on the statues to make them come back to life. This can be taken two different
ways. The first is how Jesus brought people back to life. The second is a metaphor. Our hearts
are cold and hard before we know Jesus, like how Narnia is frozen and some of the creatures are
stone, but then Jesus comes into our lives and makes us warm and alive. Like how when Aslan
came to Narnia it became spring. Lastly, the war between Aslan and the White Witch is like the
spiritual warfare going on between God and Satan. She wants the Pevensies and Narnians killed but
Aslan is fighting for

Analysis Of Allah Hu Akbar
David Procter Formal Writing
Allah Hu Akbar is portrayed as a war chant and terrorist motto by the media whenever there has
been a conflict around the world with Muslims or others with Middle Eastern descent. But it is
actually a prayer meaning God is great. The media is wrongly portraying Muslims as terrorists,
Muslims follow the religion of Islam and since the attacks of 9/11 on the twin towers. Muslims,
especially in America, are suffering from discrimination from babies being forced off domestic
flights to American Muslims who were denied the second amendment of bearing arms. Even
famous musicians have been denied entry in the U.S because of their Islamic name, and
Muslims not being served un opened cans of Coca Cola as it could be used as a weapon . This
prejudice is creating lethal stereotypes in today s society. The media have published articles that
portray many Muslims as terrorists. This has made many Americans believe that Muslims all
have connections to Al Qaeda and Taliban making everyone fear them in general. This
discrimination is even effecting babies. Riyanna Abdullah was an 18 month old child who was
flying on a JetBlue flight from Florida back to New Jersey. She was asked to leave the plane by
flight attendants because she was on the no fly list. Riyanna shares the same name as a known
terrorist (Islam uses similar names). Even when the flight attendants saw that she was an infant they
still refused. This prejudice against the Abdullah family was

Celiac Disease And Gluten Free Products
That may be a snarky way of saying it, but it s true. Scientific studies have concluded that
sensitivity to gluten for people who do not have Celiac disease may be completely
psychological.Especially relevant in a country where 17 million people may unnecessarily believe
that they are gluten sensitive. (Source: A Mayo Clinic survey in 2012, cited in a NY Times
article.)Especially shocking in a planet that spent $10.5 billion last year in glutenfree products.
(Source: Mintel, a market research company, cited in the NY Times article.)Especially important
because a psychological disease can spread as fast as any virus but be more enduring.Especially
lucrative for all the food companies making tons of money off of people like you.

This disease is largely self diagnosed, and studies are starting to show that it is not real. Professor
and scientist Peter Gibson is a hot shot when it comes to studying gluten. He did a study in 2011
that gave a lot of credit to the belief in (non Celiac) gluteny sensitivity. But when he revisited the
study again in 2013, but with much more rigor given that NCGS was becoming a worldwide
phenomenon. These are the measures he took to get valid results:
Subjects were given every single meal for the duration of the study.Any other potential causes of
bad stomach symptoms were removed from the diet. (Think lactose from milk.)And just in case
you did not think he was serious, Peter collected nine days worth of urine and fecal matter. (Now
that s a topic of conversation.) The results were pretty shocking. They concluded that gluten in no
way could have caused any of the negative symptoms that the subjects were suffering
from.NOCEBO might sound like the name of the latest trendy NYC neighborhood, but it s not. It
is a term that means something HARMLESS that causes harmful effects to people who take it.
For the people in this very thorough medical study, gluten was proven to be a NOCEBO. People
who did not take gluten but thought they were eating it began to get the that list of symptoms you
would not want to wish on your enemies. In the study s own terms, We found no evidence of
specific or dose dependent effects of

Abraham Lincoln, Slavery and the American Civil War Essay
This investigation will analyze how Abraham Lincoln s view on slavery reflected during and
after the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865. To analyze exactly how Lincoln s position on
slavery affected the war overall, this investigation looks at Lincoln s moral and religious views
as well as his social and political views. Two main sources were used, both dealing with events
relevant to his political career and his roots in his career and other important issues including
slavery. Lincoln by David Herbert Donald tells a deep and detailed story on all aspects of his life
and career. Abraham Lincolnand the Union deals with his struggle towards Union victory. Both

Others suggested he take a softer position on slavery he responded forcefully with these words:
Let there be no compromise on the question of extending slavery. Lincoln had a firm position
and didn t deviate from it: every time a slave bill was passed, he proceeded to vote against the
spread of slavery. The separation between North and South revolved around this peculiar
institution. In the South, Slavery was used heavily in the economy. Lincoln said that Slavery and
abolitionists cannot coexist if there were to be a Union. This house, or Union collapsed quickly.
The South s secession was the main concern with Lincoln in office. The idea of a split was
horrifying and to keep the Union and to defend the Constitution was Lincoln s first priority. It had
come to his attention that freeing the slaves had to be done in late 1862. At the time Abraham
Lincoln was known as President Lincoln and Commander in Chief. In January of 1863, Lincoln
gave an executive order known as the Emancipation Proclamation as a necessary action of war.
Using his elevated power, he addressed the shortcomings of Congress, who couldn t effectively
control slavery, and declared all persons held as slaves... shall not then be practically recognized
[as slaves ... but are] forever... free. The Emancipation Proclamation went beyond the attempts of
Congress to control slavery as in the Second Confiscation Act of 1862. Some direct effects

(1982) and Murder Most Foul: The Killer and the American Gothic Imagination (1998). She is
currently working on a piece focusing on landscape and antiquity in 19th century New England.
Her thesis in Confidence Men and Painted Women: A Study of Middle Class Culture in America,
1830 1870 is that, In an open, urban society, the powerful images of the confidence man and
painted woman expressed the deep concern of status conscious social climbers that they themselves
and those around them were passing for something they were not (xv). The Era of the Confidence
Man is the first chapter of this thrilling exposition and it dives into the social origins of the
confidence man. The chapter starts out quite similarly to an advice manual and begins with
warning the reader that young men are in fact moldable pieces of wax and highly impressionable
beings who must never fall prey to the confidence men. The advice manual then proceeds to
enumerate the different kinds of confidence men: the urban companions, the demagogues,

  • 2. Deborah Tannen And Gender Deborah Tannen is an American academic and professor of linguistics at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Her research mainly focuses on the expression of interpersonal relationships in conversational interactions, including how these interactions are affected by gender and cultural differences. In her essay Tannen uses genderto reveal the differences between maleand female conversational styles in classroom discussions. She formulates the theory that males naturally prefer and dominate contributions to these debate like discussions while females incline to contribute to less hostile conversations. Tannen presents her argument effectively using simple vocabulary and appropriate literary devices however, as the essay progresses she... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, Tannen does not consider it in her research. What makes a male or a female dominate discussions in class is more or less reliant on their personality. In a regular classroom there are innumerable personalities that contradict each other and similarly those who do not participate in debating at all, regardless of sex. It all depends on the personality of a person while Tannen ignoring this aspect proposes a clichГ©d approach where males tend to dominate females in discussions and then provides vague and insufficient supports to justify her ... • 3. Julia Harris And Artur Samarin In The Great High School... Everyone does crazy things. Sometimes, people cannot control themselves from acting out or doing things that could harm others. Julia Snyde, the unsub from Gentlemen and Players by Joanne Harris and Artur Samarin from The Great High School Impostor by Daniel Riley are portrayed as evil people because they both make selfish decisions that hurt others around them to fulfil their motives of extracting revenge on St Oswald s and having a comfortable life in the US respectively. But that is just one side of the story. They have had very difficult upbringings and have never felt loved. Julia Snyde and Artur Samarin are both portrayed as selfish and vicious by their actions. But, their actions are a result of PTSD caused by spending their childhood... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But, this does not work in either case as the relationships formed are emotionally damaging and even illegal in the case of Artur. While pretending to be a boy to attend St Oswald s, Julia Snyde meets Leon and immediately falls in love with him. But, Leon does not feel the same way. In fact, even when he knows that Julia is in love with him, he continues to play with her emotions and makes her spend time around him when he is with Francesa, his new girlfriend. Leon is a vain, self centred teenager who enjoys tormenting Julia. Leon knows that Julia does not enjoy being around Francesa. But, he forces her to. Snyde said that she had a shack... it was there that we went, I keeping watch, smoking and trying not to listen to the sounds that came from the little shack behind me (Harris 213). Leon makes Julia Snyde keep watch while he was sexual intercourse with Francesa just a few feet away. Only a sick, mentally unstable human would do such things. He subjects both Julia and Francesa to a feeling of him wanting the other and mentally torments Julia as she has to watch the love of her life, be with another girl and she can t do anything about it. This affects Julia so heavily that she is never able to have a good relationship with anyone in her life without feeling insecure about herself. In fact, she harms or pushes people away before that can do the same to her. She ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Theodore Roosevelt became president in 1901 and started implementing new foreign policies such as the Big Stick Policy and the Open Door Policy . The Big Stick Policy was a policy that was for peaceful negation while having a strong military for support. The Open Door Policy was a policy that stated that all counties should have equal access to any Chinese port open to trade. As foreign intervention continued to grow so did resentment from the Chinese. Large parts of China were completely under foreign control. They killed hundreds of missionaries and any Chinese people who had converted to Christianity. • 5. Self-Destruction In Hamlet Hamlet, a tragic hero with a feigned madness seeking revenge for his deceased father, kills everyone in his path and finally succeeded in taking vengeance for the murder of his father by killing the murderer, Claudius for good. Hamlet s consistent desire to seek revenge for his father s murderer, led him to foreseeable yet tragic downfall. In Hamlet, Shakespeare utilizes the acts of revenge throughout the play to show self destruction and confliction in through characters such as Hamlet. The theme of revenge causing self destruction is established in act two of the book by Hamlet himself. Hamlet proclaims: O, vengeance! Why, what an ass am I! This is most brave, That I, the son of a dear father murder d, Prompted to my revenge by heaven and hell, Must, like a whore, unpack my heart with words, And fall a cursing, like a very drab, A stallion! He uses the word noble which means his decision is strictly based off of what is the more morale option (which seems to be another common theme in Hamlet). In Hamlet s self conflicting soliloquy he is also facing self destruction because his constant suicidal thoughts. His back and forth debating on whether to end his life all stems from the inner guilt he withholds from not taking revenge on Claudius yet. • 6. The Effects Of Video Games On Pop Culture Around the middle of the 20th Century man cultures started to grow beyond what they previously were thanks to different mediums (such as television and music) helping to push boundaries; with this came the birth of pop culture. Considering pop culture is a shortened version of popular culture it s clear that many of the things in pop culture would be short lived. The short lived trends and happenings are labeled as fads . Strangely enough, some fads are made to transform and actually become a mainstay in the varying international cultures. One such example might be familiar as it is common in today s society. This example is, indeed, video games. When video games were first being introduced to the general public they weren t all that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This led to a market that was flooded with consoles and left many consumers confused. Adding to this confusion was the fact that there wasn t many reliable sources for game information. The market was overwhelmed with lackluster and poorly made games and no one was being informed as to which games these were. So eventually people just stopped buying games. All of this mixed with Atari manufacturing too many console units and games led to a market crash many call The Video Game Crash of 83 causing many to label video games as a dying fad. Several years had passed and a Japanese company by the name of Nintendo decided it wanted to enter the market. Nintendo s Family Computer, or Famicom, was doing well in Japan and Nintendo wanted to try and find success in North America. This proved to be difficult because America was still wary on the idea of game consoles after the crash. To try and avoid the skepticism that came with items labeled as a game console, Nintendo rebranded the Famicom as the Nintendo Entertainment System and marketed it as a toy. Believe it or not, this actually worked and Nintendo became a household name. In order to keep their success going Nintendo took steps to avoid another market crash. Nintendo would put developers under a contract that kept them on their console and would keep them from developing games for developers. Developers also had a limited amount of games they could release in a year as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Similarities Between Lord Of The Flies And The Hunger Games District 12. Where you can starve to death in safety (6). This is a quote from the book The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, and it is a prime example of the dystopian society the book is set in. Another book set in a dystopian society is Lord of the Flies, by William Golding. The Hunger Games is a book about a society where every year, 24 people are sent to fight to the death in the HungerGames. Lord of the Flies is about a big group of young children getting trapped on an island and having to figure out how to survive on their own without any adults. Both the novel Lord of The Flies and the book The Hunger Games present societies that are vicious and cruel, in similar settings, even though there are some differences between the two stories. One similarity between both books is the use of fire. At the beginning of Lord of the Flies fire is used to try to give a signal to passing ships that there are children trapped on the island. If a ship comes near the island they may not be able to notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire (33). At the beginning of The Hunger Games fire is used to gain the Capitol s attention during the ceremony where all tributes ride on chariots. I want the audience to recognize you when you re in the arena, says Cinna dreamily. Katniss, the girl who was on fire (67). In both situations, fire is used to gain attention of people who will be able to help them in the future, whether it s giving them a gift during the Games, or rescuing them. However, later on in the stories fire is used differently. At the end of Lord of the Flies, Jack s group uses fire to try to burn down the forest in order to find and kill Ralph. The fire was a big one and the drum roll that he had thought had left so far behind was nearer (182). This quote is from a part when Ralph is hiding in the currently burning down forest, trying to escape from Jack. In The Hunger Games, fire is used to burn down part of the arena for the Games, in order to bring Katniss closer to the other tributes. This fire is designed to flush us out, to drive us together (173). One difference between the two books is the idea of unique appearances. In Lord of the Flies, there is the ... • 8. The Hound Of Baskervilles By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Essay Matthew Le Mr. Gorden Advanced Composition 11/14/2016 Crime is as old as humanity itself, and the first crime committed by man according to Christianity is that of Cain killing Abel. Throughout the recorded history, the human past is significantly littered with criminal activities including mass murder, wars, and genocides. Moreover, beginning the 18th century, historians have pointed at new forms of crimes that target specific groups of people like a particular ethnicity or family (Cassell, Mitchell, and Edwards, pp. 59 103). Thus, in his book The Hound of Baskervilles, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle attempts to exploit the theme of crime through the application of the modern perspective of crime investigation and prevention by enlisting the expertise of crime detectives. From The Hound of Baskervilles, it is evident that the war against crime can only be won when there is a combination of public cooperation and keen analysis of evidence by the crime detection unit (Bunker, pp. 129 137). Sir Arthur Conan Doyle begins his book with a small mystery when Dr. Watson Sherlock Holmes speculate on the owner of a walking stick that had been left in their office by an unidentified visitor. Holmes predicts the appearance of James Mortimer, the owner of the cane, wowing Watson with his supreme observation power (Arthur, pp. 10 250). The plot then shifts to Mortimer entering the office and unveiling the 18th century manuscript and recounting the myth of the lecherous Hugo ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Media s Effect On The Black Society Media has a detrimental effect on the black society. Blacks have very little, if any control in what the media displays. How many African American Television network companies are there? How many African American Television companies are competing with the big named companies who rack in millions or billions of dollars? It is logical to say whomever controls the media, controls the mind. Television is a common form of media . A lot of things that we watch has been carefully hand picked and crafted for blacks but not by blacks. There are currently no Black owned television networks. The question is; who is feeding our minds? Television network companies are almost completely dominated by middle aged to elderly Caucasian male. Many may assume that BET is black owned; however as of 2001 BET has been taken over by Viacom . Who owns Viacom? Sumner Redstone, an elderly Caucasian male. BET is the most prominent network in targeting Black households and reaches over 90 Million households. Having no black owned television networks lead to a non black persons perception of black peopleand black culture. This displays a fabricated experience and idealism of what these networks think black people are or should be. It is equivalent to an individual making a documentary on what it is like being Oprah Winfrey but they are not Oprah. Winfrey. Baron de Montesquieu believed in the separation of power and checks and balances. His real name is Charles Louis de Secondat and he lived in France from 1689 to 1755. Cesare Beccaria was dead set against unfair punishments. He believed that the punishments should fit the crime. (Cesare Beccaria) For example, if a person is caught stealing bread, and the court decrees his hand should be cut off, he will have to steal again because he is unable to feed his family with one hand. He also believed in abolishing the death penalty. Because the boys do not establish a competent justice system, as Cesare Beccaria argued any effective government must, they fall into a state of anarchy. Jack s actions are a perfect example of the failure of the boys to have a justice system. After he lets the fire go out, Piggy and Ralph tear into him. He cannot bear the truth of his actions and turns to the only way of coping he knows preying on the weak. This from Piggy, and the wails of agreement from some of the hunters, drove Jack to violence. The bolting look came into his blue eyes. He took a step, and able at last to hit someone, stuck his fist into Piggy s stomach (Golding 71). His violence in a society today would not be condoned. He would be brought up in front of the proper authorities. Unfortunately, on the island, there are no proper authorities. The justice system is nonexistent. This allows Jack to continue doing wrong things without fear of repercussions. This causes the island to fall into a state of anarchy because no one is afraid of breaking the law. Many people associate industrial striking with laborers such as miners and factory workers, but even higher level jobs were covered by the looming veil of rebellion and reform. In my own room you would probably find that I have a big appreciation for books, but don t you wonder what the inventor and third president s house showed you what he was like? Thomas Jefferson was a very important man; however, there are many more sides to him than you think. Initially, the Northeast Portico displays Thomas Jeffersons deep appreciation for Architecture. Jefferson himself got the idea for this wall from James Gibb s Book of Architecture. He used the book and designed a wall based on one of his designs. The original blueprint was supposed to be used for an octagonal structure, and Jefferson used it for just one wall. This shows that Jefferson cares for architecture... He noted that the Revolutionary War was not sparked by colonists hating the monarchical system, but by the negative relationship between England and its newest colony. Causes for it and what impact it had on the audience. Let me discuss about this in brief. The recession of 1937 38 is usually known as the recession at intervals Depression. It came at a time once the recovery from the good Depression was aloof from complete and therefore the per centum was still terribly high. In fact, it had been a fatal natural event to the recovery. In other words, much like one can look at a painting and tell if it is a Monet, a Renoir, or a Degas, if a film director is an auteur, one can look at his film and tell by style and recurring themesthat it was made by a certain director. In all of the films, the husband and wife have difficulty communicating with each other. One scene in City of Women visually shows this with multiple barriers: physical (a column and doorway), spatial (the characters are on opposite sides of the screen) and social (a crown with turned backs). In Juliet of the Spirits, Julieta is the superwife. She plays all of the above stated roles, and also it is apparent that she has her own interior life. This is shown by the use of mirrors and reflections within reflections. The final character archetype that I noticed in Fellini s films is the macho man. This is probably best illustrated in the harem sequence in 8 1/2. In this the main character imagines himself as the master of all women he has ever desired, real or fantasized. In City of Women the doctor is the idealized male stereotype who now has to deal with women s increasing independence. I do not think that this character was as effective, however, in showing this archetype as much as the harem sequence did. In La Strada the male character is kept a prisoner by these male virtues he cannot communicate his own feelings. Fellini definitely has many trademarks, but I chose these to write about because they are the least remarked upon. In the sensorimotor stage (0 2), the child is entirely egocentric; everything is a reflection of them. The children cannot determine the difference amongst themselves and the environment. At this stage the children have no recollection of the past and the future; each may focus on what is going on at that moment in time. The children may rely on the senses of sight, touch, and hearing. Cognitive psychologists believe that babies may rely on determinist behaviors, such as sucking, crawling, and watching (Greenwood, 2009). Schumpeter (1934, p.74) states that the carrying out of new combinations we call enterprise ; the individuals whose function it is to carry them out we call entrepreneurs . Simply put, Schumpeter views entrepreneurs as innovators; however, it is important to note that Schumpeter (1934, p.88) only views those that commercially exploit their creations as innovators, declaring as long as they [inventions] are not carried into practice, inventions are economically irrelevant. For Schumpeter, it is the commercial exploitation of these new inventions, created by the innovators that he refers to as entrepreneurs, which drive economic development (Fig.2). This is because, in the process of exploiting this new creation, be it an invention or new production method, the entrepreneur breaks the economy out of its static equilibrium, disturbing what ... Families would pile in on Friday nights to try and get the newly released video to take home and enjoy. But that all changed in 2010 when the company filed bankruptcy. The company closed stores and finally was sold to another business due to the changing technology and competition in providing service to the customers. Could they have changed the brand before it was too late or did they just try to implement the change too late in the game? One thing is for sure, Blockbuster stills exist through DISH Network. However complications have emerged as a result of duplicators attempting to copy their no hassle offers in the highly competitive used car market. Therefore, CarMax s primary concern is staying ahead of the competition and eliminating threats from potential future disruptions from competitors. Final Recommendations Recommendation 1: Expand the Parts and Service Department: As mentioned in the issue analysis the margin received from this by CarMax is very high. It receives more than 14% than its closest competitor (Penske). Target Market: Customers who have bought cars from CarMax in the past. Key Actions: In order to attract more customers to purchase the services and parts from CarMax, they should offer attractive bundles to customers when buying a car. When the customers buy a car, they can include service for an additional fee which will be more lucrative than buying the service individually. This might seem more lucrative for the customer. Potassium Hexacyanoferrate Lab Report Why Potassium Hexacyanoferrate (III) I chose to write this paper on potassium Hexacyanoferrate(III) because its inorganic chemical formula is almost seem similar to Prussiate blue. Prussiate Blue exhibits interesting structural characteristics and properties. My aim is to explore if potassium Hexacyanoferrate (III) exhibit the similar properties and characteristics as prussiate blue. Introduction The Potassium Hexacyanoferrate (III) is one of the common salts of the ferricyanide. Its chemical structure is K3[Fe(CN)6], and its common name is potassium ferricyanide.1The coordination complex is also known under names such as red prussiate of potash, or red potassium prussiate. Acids, in particular strong acids react with potassium ferricyanide to form ferricyanic acid, which decomposes to form toxic hydrogen cyanide. Additional physical characteristics of potassium fericyanide are that it is water soluble and can also exist as crystals as well as in powder form, and decomposes when heated.5 Its vapor pressure at 200 C is negligible and it is one of the most stable cyanide complexes.7Potassium ferricyanide is poorly oxidized by active chlorine, ozone, and potassium permangante.7 Its maximum allowable concentration is 1.25 mg/L and the oxidation of potassium ferricyanide at pH 7 11 proceeds as ... • 42. Individuality In Anthem Ego a person s sense of self esteem or self importance. Also known as the forbidden word of the totalitarian society created by Ayn Rand in Anthem. In Rand s 1938 novel, her main character, Equality 7 2125 unknowingly followed the path of individuality, which was against the wishes of society. Proving that knowledge is a product of the observations and mental integrations of individuals, he rebelled against the ideals his society chained him with. He found his ego and sense of self, amidst a world who deemed it a sin to do so. Through the point of view/narration, themes, characterization and conflicts, Rand wanted to convey the dangers of a failed government, and the need for individuality. When beginning the novel, Rand uses a first person point of view, yet instead of the common plural forms of, I and My , she has the narrator use, We and Our. Equality was taught that individuality didn t exist, and instead that all men must be alike, therefore there is only, we. Upon reading this, it seems as if Rand was writing about multiple people, yet this is how the society must address themselves, because no man gets singled out. The plural forms remain the same, until the beginning of chapter eleven, where Equality finally discovers the form of, I . This type of narration allowed the ideals of society to be made apparent, and progressed the plot in Equality s search of individuality. Individualism and collectivism are two core themes that are present in the novel. It s as if these two themes work against each other, in order to obtain individuality, you must get rid of collectivism, and vice versa. As Equality lives through his days, he discovers his unspoken lover, the Golden One , and begins to explore egotistical thoughts, where his curiosity grew even greater. In chapter nine, Equality began finally discovering individuality, where he was torn on finding the certain word that society had hidden. And we felt torn, torn for some word we could not find. (Rand 112) In the beginning of chapter eleven, after finding a home from the unmentionable times, he had discovered individuality within the form of I , and his mind opened up to the many great things of this world. Essay On Inflammation First Name Last Name Course #/Title July 4, 2015 Inflammation and Cancer ABSTRACT According to the most recent evidence, there is a direct link between chronic inflammation and certain types of cancer. This is especially true for individuals who are overweight or obese, or exhibit disorders like diabetes, hepatitis A and B, HIV/AIDS, and other bacterial/viral disorders. One main reason is that Aslan gives his life to save Edmund in the same way that Jesus sacrificed his own life to save us. Edmund was known as a traitor and the only way to remove that label was to get blood. Similarly, the only way to pay the price of sin is for a sinless person to die. Aslan s death itself parallels Jesus . When Aslan gives himself up for Edmund, the White Witchhas him tied up and bound to the table, which is meant for a traitor. This reminds me of when Jesus rebukes demons and sends them out of people. The White Witch likes to call herself the Queen of Narnia and think she is more powerful than Aslan but she is not. Likewise, Satan likes to believe that he is more powerful than Jesus, but he too is not. After Peter, Susan, Lucy, and the Beavers realize that Edmund is gone and that he most likely is going to the White Witch they frantically pack up and leave the Beaver s dam. This is similar to when the Israelites flee Egypt in the exodus. Like the Israelites had to cross the Red Sea, the Pevensies and the Beavers cross the Great River while it is un thawing. The Witch s wolves are chasing them and drown like the Egyptian soldiers. Mr. Beaver tells Peter, Susan, and Lucy that only Aslan can save Edmund much like only Jesus can save us. When Aslan goes to the Witch s castle after he comes back to life, he breathes on the statues to make them come back to life. This can be taken two different ways. The first is how Jesus brought people back to life. The second is a metaphor. Our hearts are cold and hard before we know Jesus, like how Narnia is frozen and some of the creatures are stone, but then Jesus comes into our lives and makes us warm and alive. Like how when Aslan came to Narnia it became spring. Lastly, the war between Aslan and the White Witch is like the spiritual warfare going on between God and Satan.
