This document discusses the merging of the material and immaterial worlds due to technological advances and fierce competition between companies. It defines the material world as dealing with scarcity and physical goods, while the immaterial world involves abundance and non-physical concepts like branding and social relationships. As these worlds intersect, many everyday things are losing their material form and the immaterial is becoming material. The document then presents Melt as a framework for web services, where services 1) move something from material to immaterial, 2) make the immaterial more material, 3) have a significant impact on the material world, and 4) have a significant impact on the immaterial world, ultimately 5) melting the two worlds together.

1. Clash of Clans is a popular free-to-play mobile strategy game where players build villages, gather resources, and attack other villages.
2. Though the game is free to play, it makes money through in-app purchases of gems using a freemium model.
3. The game's financial success is based on a three-layer ecosystem where different layers serve different purposes to create scale, commitment, and profit. The first layer reaches a wide audience, the second invites player investment through base-building, and the third offers tools that can be upgraded through optional in-app purchases.
This document provides a framework for understanding digitalization using the concept of "melt." It describes digitalization as the process of converting material objects and actions into intangible elements using computers. It presents a 5-step guide to digitalization: 1) Free up material elements by extracting intangibles, 2) Shape the material world by creating/eliminating elements, 3) Flow intangible elements by making them more concrete, 4) Amplify the immaterial world by sharing knowledge, and 5) Play with others by choosing an ecosystem role like host or epiphyte. The framework is intended to help users understand and apply digitalization concepts to their business or services.
The document discusses two types of innovation - materially aligned innovation and immaterially aligned innovation. Materially aligned innovation aims for predetermined results, while immaterially aligned innovation aims for serendipity. It argues that creating "diagonal serendipity lines" by combining disparate immaterial and material elements from far apart on a horizontal plane can lead to unexpected results. It provides tips for companies to find their diagonal serendipity lines such as migrating away from solely material goals, combining products and services, bringing together diverse groups of people, and being open to unexpected outcomes.
The document discusses strategies for using a variety of social media channels and owned media to promote a business. It recommends auditing existing content, enabling sharing features, ensuring key information is up to date, selecting the most relevant channels, repackaging content for different platforms, engaging audiences, and linking all channels together. The goal is to build an optimized social media palette to effectively distribute business messaging.
This document provides a brief history of the Internet from the 1960s to the present day, outlining key developments in each decade such as the creation of ARPANET in the 1960s, the introduction of TCP/IP and the domain name system in the 1970s and 1980s, the commercialization of the Internet in the 1990s, and the rise of social media and wireless connectivity in the 2000s and 2010s. The document asks where Internet and technology may be headed in the 2020s.
This document describes Perunapuu, a Finnish project founded by guys who wanted better food. Their goal is to help people find healthier, tastier ingredients. Perunapuu is a social web service where users can submit their favorite shopping places for special ingredients. It aims to solve the problem of knowing where to find good ingredients by crowdsourcing locations. The platform is also open for entrepreneurs to use to address other issues like availability and cost of ingredients.
This document provides a 6-step plan for increasing corporate transparency. The plan advises that management should lead by example in becoming more transparent. Companies should identify those who oppose transparency and reward those who support it. Transparency tools and policies should be easy to use and supported. Rules for transparency should be simple to follow. The overall goal is to change a company's culture from one that is sealed, obvious, shut, boring, and antisocial, to one that is more open and collaborative.
The document discusses how average people originally spent time socializing in social media, until big businesses wanted to also participate for commercial purposes. However, the document argues that only people, not companies, can genuinely participate in social media dialogues. It suggests that businesses should empower their employees to interact authentically in social media on the company's behalf.
