Criminal Data Comparison
Criminal Data Comparison Of Washington D.C and New York
Anitra Watts
CJS 231 Assignment 1
Criminal Data Comparison In 1927, the International Association of Chiefs of Police started a
Committee on Crime Records as a system so that they can better collect uniform crime statistics. The
committee felt that the offenses known to the law enforcement agencies would be the best to measure
a majority of the incidences of crime in the United States of America. The committee evaluated the
crimes based on its seriousness of the crime, the likelihood where the crimes had been reported, and
how often the crime was being committed. The IACP selected seven crimes that they felt the law
enforcement agencies would be responsible for reporting to the ... Show more content on

New York s population at 17,999,657 with 99.8% of its law enforcement agencies reporting, the police
department reported that in the city the total amount of murders in 2009 was 761. The only difference
between the murder rates in the city ofWashington D.C. and New York is all because of the amount of
people in New York compared to Washington D.C. Even though New York City has more murders, the
amount of murders has been reduced due to New York s City zero tolerance policy. The amount of
murders in New York has dropped from 2,262 murders to 767 between the years of 1990 and 1997
which in turn is big drop of 66% in the murder rate. The year of 1997 was the year that has had the
fewest amounts of murders since 1967.The theory of the crime rates between New York City and
Washington D.C. is that the cities poverty levels are so high in each city and that those living in
poverty choose to commit crime s to supplement their lifestyle. It is also proven that people living in
poverty have goals to achieve and the means to achieve these goals is by committing crimes to include
murder and that achieving these goals they will feel a source of

The Meditations By Marcus Aurelius
The universe has a plan for all of us, and we need to follow it. When you asked me what book we
should assign to all of our employees, I immediately thought about The Meditations by Marcus
Aurelius. In The Meditations, you read of ways to live your life without fear of consequences.
Forgetting past troubles and current issues will help our employees to work hard at what they have to
do, working for our tire distribution company. The universe sets out our life before we are born and it
is important to not let fear or mistakes get in the way of the future. If we assign everyone in the
company, including those in satellite locations, Marcus Aurelius, I believe that our productions will
benefit from the results. One perk of reading The Meditations is understanding the impact Stoicism
has on a person and society as a whole. If all of our employees understood that everything happens for
a reason and there is nothing you can do to change what has already happened, they will be able to
focus on what is happening right now. In addition to realizing that the past is over, our employees who
learned about Stoic philosophy through Marcus Aurelius will understand that the universe has set their
path. If something gets in their way, they will be able to get past it knowing that that is how it is
supposed to be. Since life has a set course and nothing can stop the way it will play out, our
employees will learn to understand the fact that the only thing they have control over in their

Analysis Of Livvie, And Girl By Eudora Welty
Separate spheres is an ideology that defines separate spheres for women and men. This ideology
surfaced during the Industrial Revolution, although the idea of gendered separation of spheres is much
older. The notion of separate spheres dictates that men, based primarily on their biological makeup as
well as the will of God, inhabit the public sphere the world of politics, economy, commerce, and law.
Women s proper sphere , according to the ideology, is the private realm of domestic life, child rearing,
housekeeping, and religious education (Kuersten, pp. 16 17). The theme in Livvie by Eudora Welty
and in Girl by Jamaica Kincaid depicts how women are instructed to take care of the home through
experience and submission which is defined by the sphere ideology. Eudora Welty has made
significant contributions to the cause of American literature using themes that share the ideology of
separate spheres. The story in question, Livvie , in principal is the renewal of the main character s life,
from the realm of death. The story revolves around the life of Livvie, who is married to a much older
man, Solomon. Although the married life provides some personal security and regularity, it lacks in
passion. This makes her feel that she is entrapped in the relationship. While this sort of conflict had
been explored and presented by many female writers of the last century, Eudora Welty s offering is not
so prominent by the narrative method but by the story s thematic

Molybdenum Essay
Molybdenum is a chemical element with symbol Mo and atomic number 42. The name is from Neo
Latin molybdenum, from Ancient Greek Μόλυβδος molybdos, meaning lead, since its ores were
confused with lead ores. The mass number is 95.94, number of neutrons is 54, the electron
configuration is [Kr]4d⁵5s¹. Molybdenum is used as glass furnace electrodes due to its high melting
point. It is also used in the petroleum industry, to catalyze the removal of organic sulfur compounds in
coal liquification and gas liquification processes. Molybdenum is an essential trace element for
animals and plants. molybdenum can cause diarrhea, growth retardation, infertility, low birth weight,
and gout; it can also affect the lungs, kidneys, and liver. The Climax Mine is located approximately 13
miles northeast of Leadville, Colorado and is a porphyry molybdenum deposit with molybdenite as the
primary sulfide mineral. The other major source of molybdenum is by product from copper mines in
the western part of the United States, Canada, Chile, Mexico and Peru. Molybdenum is a valuable
alloying agent, contributing to quenched and tempered steels ability to harden and toughness.
molybdenum has been used as electrodes for electrically heated glass furnaces and forehearths. As a
filament material in electronic and electrical applications. It is a valuable catalyst for refining
petroleum. It is used in certain nickel based alloys, such as the Hastelloys, patented alloys that are

Oprah Winfrey Life
All my life I have wanted to lead people to an empathy space. To a gratitude space. I want us all to
fulfill our greatest potential. To find our calling, and summon the courage to live it. I would like to
thank Oprah for showing me that even though life can be hard, I don t have to let it turn me cold and
heartless. She had a rough start in life but she continued to persevere and help others. I admire her
persistence to always try to do better. She was born into poverty and her mother was a teenage single
mom. Although she moved around a lot as a little girl, after she went to live with her father, she
became an honors student in high school. She was voted most popular girl, won the Miss Black
Tennessee beauty pageant at age 17, won an oratory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Oprah emphasizes spiritual values, healthy living and self help. One of my favorite episodes on her
show was when daughters whose dads had abandoned them, and she teaches them how to love
themselves. She teaches them that their worth is not based on their father s actions and opinions. She
also teaches them all men aren t the same, and their boyfriends and husbands truly love them.
In 2000, Oprah s Angel Network began presenting a $100,000 Use Your Life Award to people who are
using their own lives to improve the lives of others. She has given away $400 million to educational
causes. She has also given over 400 scholarships to Morehouse college in Atlanta, GE. Winfrey is a
dedicated child activists for children s rights. She founded the Family for Better Lives foundation.
Oprah is one of my role models for my career. I want to go into social work. I want to help families
and children.
She has persevered and helped others in her rough life. Most people would say she was memorable for
being down to earth. She became the highest paid performer on television, the richest self made
woman in America, and the richest African American of the 20th century. The Wall Street Journal

Reflection Paper On Baton Rogue
You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you. John
Bunyan. Last summer, I had the pleasure of doing just that. Baton Rogue in Louisiana was city
devastated by flooding but united by service. Our church wished to help, and as luck would have it the
St. Bernard Project organization would sponsor a volunteer group down to Baton Rogue to help
rebuild houses. I wished to be a part of the group, and I was permitted after our youth director agreed
to include the 9th graders as well. I was very excited and was ready to go. My sister, Hailey, would be
going with me sorta like my guide. Little did I know that this trip would change my view of what it
means to be an American and my ideas on volunteering forever. Our bus was loaded in the parking lot
of the church, and after saying goodbye to our parents, I hopped on and settled down for a long ride.
Twenty five hours is a very long time to be on a bus granted we stopped for meals along the way.
When we finally pulled into the hotel in Baton Rogue, I wanted nothing more than to just get to our
room and head to sleep. The real fun would begin the next day when we would finally get to work. I
was not really sure what to expect the next morning. I knew I was going to work, but I didn t think of
who I was working for and how much it would mean to them. Rest assured, I would figure all that out
over the course of the week. Morning in Louisiana in the summer is not pleasant. The air is heavy

Australian Fiscal Policy Analysis
Examine the impact of fiscal policy on the Australian economy
Introduction
Fiscal policy is a macroeconomic management tool that involves the use of the Commonwealth
Government s Budget In order to achieve the government s economic objectives of. The budget is the
tool of the government for the exercise of fiscal policy, it shows the government s planned revenue for
the next financial year. By varying the amount of government spending and revenue, the government
can alter the level of aggregate demand, which in turn will influence economic growth, environmental
sustainability, distribution of income and wealth, internal stability (inflation and unemployment) and

It can increase funding to support or subsidise the development of certain resources encouraging the
market to use that particular resource. In the 2015 16 budget the government will be implementing
structural reforms to help encourage small business growth and more generous child care payments,
making it easier for parents to participate in the workforce and promote stronger business confidence.
The budget can also be used to redistribute the incomes to increase equality. This means redirecting
incomes from top income earners to the lowest earners. It is achieved primarily through progressive
taxes. However in the 2015 16 budget inequality is unlucky to be changed much on a national level.
Investment in child care to help parents get back to work could address the unemployment however
the superannuation rules were not changed.

the final performance being on July 10th, 2016. This romantic comedy is describing the story of two

Each element gave the stage a different feel that matched every scene , complementing each
brilliantly. The only element that lacked for me was lights, although very bright ; in my opinion the
reoccurring blue wasn t the best option. I feel if the lighting designer would have had more warmer
colored lights against the already vibrant set pieces, it would have made the stage pop more. But one
thing i did particularly fancy, were the costumes the characters wore and how they fit each character.
Each character s costume showed the dichotomy between the personalities and tastes of each
individual. For example Ilona played by Jane Krakowski was dressed in a scarlet / pinkish dress with a
high slit up the left side; showing her seductive character type. Meaning when i saw Ilona on stage, I
immediately knew who i was looking at . Lastly the sound effects included , like the door jingle sound
or The bike bell , added to the whole idea of being inside and outside of a retail building. These effects
gave the stage an outdoorsy feel , drawing you in , giving the audience illusions of really being in

In The Waiting Room Essay
In the Waiting Room can be argued to be both the most discussed poem and the best poem of Bishop
s. To her horror, the Elizabeth in the poem discovers that she is an I and one of them (PPL150). This
thought, which is precipitated by numerous things, especially Aunt Consuelo s oh! and the horrifying
breast of the women in the waiting room s copy National Geographic, plunges her into despair about
society s order (PPL 149). In a way, this poem expresses both the awakening of oneself as a person
and the awakening to their sexuality. Elizabeth is terrified of things that are associated with women,
breast, a cry of pain, and as such she is forced to realize that she is a woman as well and, potentially,
has the same fate as them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ostriker encourages the readers not to be shy as Bishop both yearns for and fears the erotic,
experiences it as actual or potential pain, and produces screens to disguise the experience (241). These
early works and their position on her childhood provide insight into Bishop s life, especially of her
love of women, despite being indirectly about her sexuality. As such, these hidden ideas in her poems
should be explored by the readers because it helps us to better understand her. The poems Bishop had
published later in life, namely Insomnia, The Shampoo, One Art, and finally Sonnet, deal more with
her reluctance to expose her sexuality than discovering it as she does in these earlier poems.
Of the fourpoems listed above, Insomnia is the most concealed in terms of sexuality. Without proper
insider knowledge, this poem could easily be overlooked, but its use of the term inverted signals to
people that she is talking about her lesbian identity (PPL 54). Without the in group knowledge, Bishop
can hide her discussion of sexuality in this poem which is otherwise freely discussed. The last stanza
imagines the world inverted where you love me and ultimately states that Bishop wants a world like
this (PPL 54). Ideas of gender roles and how they interact with sexuality causes Bishop to hide her
true thoughts and feelings and only in an inverted world can she thrive. Still, as Harrison points out
the tone in this poem is both bitter and defiant.

Criminalization Of The Mentally Ill In The Prison System
Criminalization of the Mentally Ill
When discussing the criminalization of mentally ill persons within the prison system, it is important to
know the history of mental illness in the prison system. In1841, Dorothea Dix began her Asylum
Movement. She saw how deplorable the conditions were for mentally ill inmates in the prison system
and insisted on change. The mental ill inmates were treated very poorly, being beaten, starved, and
sexually abused. Dix brought her findings to the legislature of Massachusetts and funds were then set
aside to expand the mental hospital in Worcester. This was then duplicated across the country and
many of the mentally ill were taken out of the prison setting and moved to get appropriate care
(history.com staff, 2009). This was in the 1840 s. Dix s efforts helped to decrease the amount of
mentally ill in jails without appropriate care. Her efforts resulted in prisons containing only 0.7 per
cent of mentally ill inmates (Chaimowitz, 2012, p 1).
Today, prison s are again becoming the number one spot for the mentally ill to occupy. This increase is
related to the discovery and use of psychotropic medications, which came into the picture in the 1950
s and 1960 s. This discovery of medication led to many psychiatric patients being released from
psychiatric hospitals with the intention of them receiving treatment out in the community through
primary care providers and clinics. The decrease in the amount of psychiatric patients in psychiatric

Salinity Stress on Plants Essay examples
Salinity Stress on Plants
All plants are subjected to a multitude of stresses throughout their life cycle. Depending on the species
of plant and the source of the stress, the plant will respond in different ways. When a certain tolerance
level is reached, the plant will eventually die. When the plants in question are crop plants, then a
problem arises. The two major environmental factors that currently reduce plant productivity are
drought and salinity (Serrano, 1999), and these stresses cause similar reactions in plants due to water
stress. These environmental concerns affect plants more than is commonly thought. For example,
disease and insect loss typically decrease crop yields by less than ten percent, but severe ... Show more

The plants that grow in saline soils have diverse ionic compositions and a range in concentrations of
dissolved salts (Volkmar et al., 1998). These concentrations fluctuate because of changes in water
source, drainage, evapo transpiration, and solute availability (Volkmar et al., 1998). Due to these
varying conditions, plant growth depends on a supply of inorganic nutrients, and this level of nutrients
varies in time and space (Maathius and Amtmann, 1999). Either extreme condition concerning
nutrients results in deficiency or toxicity in plants, and this is demonstrated by salt tolerance
(Maathius and Amtmann, 1999). These conditions vary according to the plant species and growth
conditions. Little is known about the genetic basis for diversity of salt tolerance in plants, and this
could be partly explained through the definitions given for salinity.
Plants in natural environments are being exposed to increasing amounts of salinity. One third of the
land being irrigated worldwide is affected by salinity, but salinity also occurs in non irrigated land
(Allen et al., 1994). There are large areas of primary salinity, but secondary salinity can be detected
within one hundred years of settlement on an area of land. Drought and salinity are connected because
in many regions, raising plants requires irrigation. The irrigation water contains calcium, magnesium,
and sodium (Serrano et al., 1999). As the water evaporates and transpires, calcium and magnesium

Argumentative Essay On Organic Farming
Organic farming has become a central decision for various farmers and eliminates conventional
farming practices. Conventional farming has put a risk on both the grower and the people consuming
the products. Although genetically modified food has provided the masses with quicker access to food
sources, it has also impacted people with many issues unlike organic farming such as Polyface Farms.
Therefore, farms should gear towards organic farming like Polyface Farms because it reduces the risk
of environmental impacts in agriculture due to climate change, depletes the need for genetically
modified food by inducing a nutritious diet reducing health risks, and drives an opportunity for higher
wages to unconventional organic farmers.
Unlike conventional farming practices, organic farming eliminates the chances of environmental
climate change. In this case, organic farming can repeal greenhouse effects caused by pollution in the
air and the sources of the people s food supply. Based on the documentary film Food Inc, a man by the
name of Gary Hirshberg, CEO of Stonyfield Farms, addresses the basis of The [arresting of] global
warming and reversing the toxification of our air, our food and our water (1:00:37 1:00:42). In other
words, global warming has become a widespread issue and correlates towards the methods of
conventional farming with chemicals being induced into the environment for genetically modified
food supply. Furthermore, Organic farming develops an alternate

Winter Wonderland Research Paper
Living in a winter wonderland can be enjoyable with lots of snow for skiing and freezing weather and
ice for skating. Cold climates can have their drawbacks as well. For instance, if you live in areas that
have freezing temperatures, then you might be familiar with what damage frozen water pipes in your
home can do. A sudden or unexpected drop in temperature, especially at night, may catch you off
guard if you have not taken the proper precautions to winterize your home s water pipes. Then your
winter wonderland can become can become a living nightmare.
It is most unpleasant to deal with frozen water pipes on the outside or underneath your home. In a
scenario of having water pipes freeze and burst inside the house, it can be downright disastrous. When
water is inside ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If you do not know a pipe has frozen and has been damaged, when the frozen water thaws enough to
allow water flow to return, this is when unexpected flooding can occur due to a burst pipe. Frozen
water applies thousands of pounds of pressure per square inch on a pipe, so it is no wonder that they
sometimes break. If you happen to be away from home when this happens, it spells disaster.
If you have a pipe that burst unexpectedly, shuts off the valve to that pipe. You may need to turn off all
the water to your home. The more quickly you can get the water off, the less flooding there will be. If
appliances or any electrical thing is getting wet, turn off the electricity first, then the water. After you
get the water off, clean up the flood as quickly as you can to prevent damage to your floors, walls,
appliance, cabinets, or furniture.
If plumbing is not your thing, then call one. Hopefully, you only have one pipe that has burst,
although, there could be more than one. Inspect all your pipes before turning any water back on, and
that means underneath your home especially.

Toronto Blue Jays. Gerrit Cole is pitching for the hometown Pirates and is having an exceptional
game, allowing only one unearned run. The Jays lead 1 0 and Gerrit Cole is up next to bat. The
question then for General Manager, Clint Hurdle, is whether to pinch hit for him in exchange for a
better hitter, or to leave him in the game so he can continue to pitch. If only there was a way to keep

What it comes down to is the difference between the need to do something and the option to do
something. None other than Bill James, a widely known baseball writer, noted that the perceived
strategy is actually very trite, predictable, and actually nonstrategic. Instead of manager s deciding on
what substitution, or lack thereof, can give their team an advantage, they are forced with situations in
which they must bunt, must pinch hit, and must double switch. As James notes, the American League
game allows a true option, and thus true strategy. This means that whatever AL managers decide to do
when it comes to offensive batting substitutions, they do so to benefit their team, not because they are
forced to do so (Meehan, 2013). These substitutions, including the commonly used double switch
where a pinch hitter is substituted for the pitcher and the next inning is substituted again for a relief
pitcher, take up time in the game. It is significantly a problem in the MLB where the longevity and the
slow pace of the game has caused many fans to get bored sitting through a full nine innings.
Especially with the addition of instant replay, the game continues to get longer and it has become a
challenge for many fans to watch an entire game. Brian Costa, sports reporter for the Wall Street
Journal, wrote an article about the reasons for the length and slow pace of the game. He mentions that
it has become normal for fans to complain about hitters stepping out of the batter s box, pitchers
pacing around the mound and pitching changes. Red Sox Chief Operating Officer Sam Kennedy even
states that this problem is one of the most critical issues facing baseball as we move forward into the
next three, five, seven years (Costa, 2014). Joe Sheehan also wrote an article about the increasing

The Power Trip Analysis
Obedience is an act of faith; Disobedience is the result of unbelief. Obeying to a higher authority
shows that someone has faith in the judgment of the one giving the orders, while it is the result of
unbelief when someone disobeys against the word of those who are higher in authority. In some cases
it is necessary to obey to the orders one is given, but in life there is always the tough decision one
must come to, whether to obey the authority and cower down or disobey their request and do the right
thing. I believe that obedience is the conventional way of life and is needed in a day to day basis,
although I do believe that disobedience is needed during certain situations. Obedience is the process of
bowing down and taking orders one is given. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many obey to conformity because they are afraid to speak their own mind afraid to be alone. Going
against conformity means you are making the bold decision to stand up against the majority of people
alone speaking your mind and thoughts that those around you do not agree on. In many cases obeying
to higher authority is the best way to go, but disobeying is needed in your day to day life. In the article
The Power Trip by Jonah Lehrer mentions that leaders are chosen by their good traits, but their traits
disappears when they raise to power. Instead of being nice, honest, and outgoing they become mean,
cruel, and hostile towards others (Lehrer 654). When a higher authority becomes this way it takes a
great act of disobedience to stand up and release people back into freedom. For someone to be a good
leader and show that they are someone you can obey you must have just authority. In The Follower

embodiments of just authority. They are strong and powerful but also humanized what Brooks is
saying is that their can be good in obedience, but those who want it should be strong and powerful, but

Mobile Networks And Multi Hop Communication Essay
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Overview
In ad hoc wireless network, mobile nodes are connected by wireless links. The network is an
autonomous and self configured. It doesn t have fixed infrastructure or centralized management. The
mobile nodes in network are free to move from one place to another. Each node has transmitter and
receiver which is used to send and receives the data and communicates with other nodes which are in
their communication range. If any node wants to forward packet to the node which is out of range, co
operation of other nodes required; this is known as multi hop communication. In multi hop
communication message send and received by various intermediate nodes. The network topology
frequently changes due to the mobility of nodes as they move within, move into, or move out of the
network. In recent years, the ad hoc wireless network rapidly increases being used in various
applications i.e. military purpose, civilian and commercial uses without the fixed infrastructure and
human interference.
Security is also prime concern in wireless network. Intrusion is one of them. So to find intrusion,
activity should be monitored. Intrusion Detection is a process of monitoring activity of system. The
system can be computer or network system. Intrusion Detection System is a mechanism which detects
intrusion. IDS is gathered the information of activity, analyze it and determine whether it violate any
security rules . Once Intrusion detection system (IDS) determines that an unusual

Analysis Of The Novel Nervous Conditions
In the novel Nervous Conditions, Tsitsi Dangarembga explores the concepts of power and oppression.
Speaking up about oppression can liberate a person, so the people in charge do not want the oppressed
to speak up. In Nervous Conditions, males have much more dominance in life than females. Maiguru,
Nyasha, and Lucia all attempt to stand up for themselves against oppression, with little success.
Dangarembga develops the characters Maiguru, Nyasha, and Lucia in order to convey how speaking
out against oppression is necessary but not sufficient to gain power. Nyasha vocally resists when she
feels oppressed because she refuses to accept being controlled. However, as a child, she must defer to
her parents whether she likes it or not. Early in the novel, Maiguru questions if Nyasha should read
Lady Chatterly s Lover, a book that contains many Western themes and ideals, because that s not very
good...[she doesn t] want [her] to read books like that . Nyasha retorts, What s all the fuss about
anyway? It s only a book and I m only reading it (75). The controversy of Lady Chatterly s Lover
causes Maiguru to label it as not very good . Italics place extra emphasis on the words book and
reading , because these two words are associated with gaining knowledge, and therefore gaining
power. Maiguru does not want Nyasha to gain power in the form of ideas that might cause her to rebel
against her parents. Nyasha s confrontational attitude about the book reaffirms Maiguru s belief that it

The Lives Of Animals ( 1999 )
In The Lives of Animals (1999), a metafictional novella about animal right by the South African
novelist J.M. Coetzee, the author posits through his character representative, Elizabeth Costello, that
animals are not believers in ecology (Coetzee 151). We are told to believe based on the previous
ruminations of Costello, who outlines early in part I The Philosophers and the Animals section that
animals do not possess reason, and as a result, animals cannot hope to comprehend the way in which
the complex ecosystems that are present in the study of ecology in any meaningful way (Coetzee 137).
This claim is important to Costello in that it is the very foundation of everything else she argues
within her debate, as she cites that to approach the ethics of the animal rights argument from any
spectrum of our understanding of reason is to do so from a flawed point of view, as animals do not
possess reason and therefore cannot be judged and evaluated under that system fairly, or even at all.
While Costello s claims certainly present an interesting point, they are troubling and ultimately flawed
in their approach. I strongly disagree with Costello s claim that animal are not believers in ecology
because she is wholly enamoured with the idea of reason being an impossible judge of animal rights,
going so far as to say that if reason is all she shares with her philosophical opponents, then she has no
use for it (Coetzee 133). However, through Costello s assumption that she can speak

The Pilgrims In The Canterbury Tales By Geoffrey Chaucer
The poem The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, is a frame story about the journey of twenty
nine pilgrims as they are on their pilgrimage to Canterbury. Each of these pilgrims belong to one of
three basic Medieval English estates which are based on their profession: The Nobility, The Religious
Affiliate, and Peasantry. Of the Peasantry estate, there are three specific pilgrims that are very colorful
in terms of their personality and they ways that they present themselves. These pilgrims are the
Plowman, the Reeve, and the Miller. In many ways these three colorful characters are similar to each
other and, in turn , are also very different from each other in many ways. However, the Plowman
serves as the best representation of the Peasantry ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because of his story, The Miller s Tale, it can be concluded that he has a very lustful nature versus to
the Plowman who does not find any interest in even being affiliated with such desires. He is, A great
stout fellow big in brawn and bone. [...] broad, knotty and short shouldered [...] (pg 17 18). He also
[...] was a master hand at stealing grain. (pg. 18) and again the Plowman would never decide to steal
from the church because he is such a God loving man. The Miller falls into the Medieval Stereotype of
the Peasantry which is that they are very lustful and also indulge into illegal activities such as theft.
the Plowman s demure is the exact opposite of the Miller however there is one character that
resembles the Plowman the most and that is the Reeve. Similar to the Plowman, the Reeve is a hard
worker, though not as honest in the work he does, is acumen for his job was to be feared further
described as, Feared like a plague he was, by those beneath (pg 19). Still he is dishonest in his work,
contrasting the Plowman, he had A better hand at bargains than his lord, [...] (pg. 19). This simply
means that the Reeve was a sly person and decided to steal from his lord and return what he stole to
pleasure his lord with subtle loans or gifts of goods. (pg.

The Issue of Palestinian Refugees Right of Return
The Issue of Right of Return of the Palestinian Refugees
The problem is that Israelis and Palestinians are divided over the more than 4 million Palestinian
refugees who insist on returning to the homes that they lost during the 1948 and later during the 6 Day
War in 1967. Palestinians claim that these were their homes and they have a right to return to them
Israelis, on the other hand, generally, find the idea of such an exponential return of Palestinians to the
heart of Israel frightening since it may override the ratio of balance of Palestinians to Israelis as well
as importing possible terrorism (e.g. Quandt, 2005)
The refuge problem first initiated with the 1948 War Which Israelis dub the War of Independence and
Palestinians call the Nakba when some 700,000 Arab residents (85%) left their home, some
voluntarily, others forced, finding refuge in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and the Gaza Strip, which was
then administered by Egypt. Others were left homeless in Israel. (Brynen, 2007) whilst the Six Day
War caused a further flight of 280,000 to 325,000 Palestinians from Israeli won territory.
The Oslo Accords in 1993, negotiated by the EU, Israel, and the US, recognized a Palestinian state
under the Fatah party (led by Yasser Arafat) and established that the Palestinian refugees would be
controlled by this rule. They also planned to solve the refugee problem (largely by monetary
compensation) by 1996. Unrest and terrorism, as well as internal conflict on the solution,

Capitalism And Imperialism
Imperialism is the policy of extending power and dominion of an empire. It is most notably
accomplished through the acquisition of territory or gaining control of foreign political or economic
systems. Capitalism, by nature, is imperialistic. While this system is not driven by nationalism, it does
facilitate competitive rivalry, and it s often distinguished by its usage of economic competition. Wage
workers are hired by competing businesses in an industry, and these businesses strive to outperform
each other. The most effective businesses sustain their dominance in the market by equipping
themselves with the latest tools and tactics to gain increasing amounts of capital. From there, they
continue to efficiently expand their territory to maximize profit and increase market power. Smaller
businesses that do not efficiently grow their profit margin and increase their market share tend to fail
in the shadows of these more powerful businesses.
The natural tendency of capitalism is to spread. Corporations are in constant pursuit to keep gaining
access to new or untouched markets that will grant them the best prices for their products and services.
They often do this by targeting new customer demographics, selling more products, and dispersing
their products or services into new territories. As these corporations infiltrate new markets,
maintaining market power would require that executives also continue to constantly innovate the
framework of their businesses refining and

The Four Gospels Compare And Contrast
Gospel is an old English word meaning good news. When comparing the four gospels they are all
unified, but each gospel can have slight differences to them. Whether is literary structure, length, how
many teachings, important events, different significance, geography or chronology; they all are
correlated to tell us Jesus story, in their own way. In like manner, God didn t give us one explanation
from an confined individual. Rather, God educates us about the broad richness of Jesus life through a
numerous prophet witnesses. Moreover, God works through well documented and a valid history, not
through confidential revelations to a single person. The prophetic witnesses of the Gospels endorse the
truth that God himself is speaking. Each Gospel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is mentioned to by Paul as Luke the beloved physician (Col. 4:14). Luke fixed forth the humanity
of the Son of Man and cites it in chronological order the life of Christ. Being a physician, he is more
precise when using language. For example, when he indicates a leper he uses the identical medical
term to describe the circumstance, for example full of leprosy (Luke 5:12). Luke s gospel is
particularly focused towards an individual named Theophilus and is focused on the complete story and
past events of Jesus Christ from his birth and ministry to his crucifixion and resurrection. A major
theme in Luke s gospel shows how important the poor were to Jesus and how we should not neglect
the poor. Examples of this are seen when the book talks about the distinctive beatitudes blessed you
are poor...hunger now...weep now... and the distinctive woes woes to you that are rich...that are
full...that laugh now... which overall say, money and power will tend to bring judgement upon you. In
addition, the gospel of Luke refers to certain parables like the Rich man and Lazarus. This sends a
message to warn the rich who tend to trust in their riches more than in God, wealth tends to pull us
away from God and that if we neglect the poor and prioritize our riches more we will go to hell.

Weisbrod explores the second question through a comparative examination of the economic
competition and cooperation between the three sectors. In his results, he deduces that nonprofits have
thrust themselves into new arenas, generating increased competition and growing political attention.
(Weisbrod, 1997) as well as a growing cooperation between the three sectors through alliances and the
commercialization of nonprofits. The evaluation of the third question focuses on the efficiency and
quality of the nursing home services provided by nonprofits compared to private institutions as well as
volunteering. Weisbrod utilizes statistics to measure labor inputs, consumer satisfaction, opportunities
for volunteers, and compensation for top executives (Weisbrod, 1997). Overall, he discovered that
nonprofit organizations are socially valuable not only because of the kinds of outputs they produce but
also because of the ways they distribute their services. (Weisbrod,

The Graphic Memoir Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi
It did not take me very long to get through the graphic memoir, Persepolis not only because it is a sort
of comic book, but because I could not put it down. I chose to read the interview between Robert Root
and Marjane Satrapi instead of the TED talk because I love the raw dialogue between the two.
Through this interview, Satrapi s strong independence and blunt words ring through loud and clear just
as her character in Persepolis. I find her honesty very refreshing, I have always said, even verbally,
orally, that I was nasty. I am very much a fan of imperfection, actually. This idea of perfection I think
really, it s the beginning of the fascism, this idea of perfection . The woman being interview is very
much the young girl that hit her principal then said, oopsy, I didn t mean it!
I can honestly say, that this graphic memoir opened my eyes to the female perspective in Iran during
the time of the Shah to the revolution and beyond. Before reading Persepolis, I had a single worldview
of the Middle East. I thought that women would be treated the same way in most countries as unequal
to a man as it can get. I pictured women unable to have respectable jobs and never being able to show
much more skin than their hands and face. When Satrapi says, The basic culture is not that the woman
is nothing Iran is not Saudi Arabia the women, they are educated, they are cultivated, they work. You
have women that are judges, they are doctors, they are journalists, they work.

Harley Davidson has been operating as a U.S. motorcycle manufacturer since 1903. Throughout its
life, it has been through many hardships, but just as many successes. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s
Harley Davidson experienced tremendous difficulties and almost went bankrupt in 1985. To its
dismay, in the 1990s Harley Davidson experienced several years of record growth and was ranked in
1990 by BusinessWeek as one of the top U.S. companies with a market value of $515 million. As a
sign of their success, they remain the only U.S. motorcycle manufacturer still in business. Harley
Davidson has competed in the U.S. and international markets against 140 other manufacturers, most of
which were larger and far better financed then they were. In 1985, Harley Davidson was emerging
from its hardships and growing as one of the top five motorcycle manufacturers in U.S. market shares,
while also having 31% of its sales coming from overseas. Its international sales were increasing as
they had partnered with a European parts warehouse in Germany and a joint venture in Japan. In
addition to these relationships, it had also partnered with 851 U.S and international dealerships.
As a business, Harley Davidson focused on three major business segments 1) motorcycles and related
products; 2) transportation (both recreational and commercial); and 3) defense and other businesses. In

Budget Is Important For An Organization
Budget
Knowing what resources are available is important for an organization to function. The organization
runs the risk of depleting resources or not using their resources effectively to accomplish the
organizations mission if resources are not accounted for. According to Dr. Dean s PowerPoint,
budgeting is the administrative activity of planning that determines what resources are needed and
how they should be supplied/applied. It should be noted that a budget is a planning tool. According to
Robert Welch, the administrative activity of budget was listed last of the seven elements that made up
the process of planning, he proposes his reasoning, For if planners seek the mind of God in
establishing their objectives and the parameters...then money will not be a problem because God will
empower that which He wants done in the church or religious organization (Welch, 167). It is wise for
a church to develop a budget, thereby ensuring that they are being good stewards of their resources.
There are three basic budgets to operate by. The government and military use a zero based budget.
Every year the budget starts at zero. Each budget unit must be justified for the next year. The key
advantage to this system is that each budget unit is reviewed and analyzed every year (welch, 168).
This allows the organization to determine if more or less resources should be requested in regard to
the budget item. It also allows the organization to assess the need for the budget unit.

The Pros And Cons Of Nurture
As you sit watching the evening news, a story comes on explaining that a man was arrested for killing
an innocent family in a random neighborhood. You ask yourself, How could a person do something so
cruel? For years, people have researched what makes a person a criminal. Are we born with the
qualities that make us a criminal or do we develop those qualities through the experiences we
encounter in our lifetime? Answering this decade old question requires comparing and contrasting
both sides of the theory concerning human development. Is human development the result of nature,
nurture, or a combination of both? Criminal like behavior and characteristics develop because of
experiences throughout our lifetime, but in some cases, there may be a few exceptions as to why a
person becomes a criminal (Mcleod, Saul). What is nurture? Nurture is the term in psychology used to
explain that environmental factors have an impact on human development. Influences such as
childhood experiences, our upbringing, and socioeconomic status can have an impact on our
personality and the person we become. According to many people who study psychology and lifespan
development, nurture contributes the most when it comes to the development of humans because
external factors potentially leave the biggest impact on the human brain (What is Nurture?). How does
nurture work? Nurture can be described in many ways. For instance, imagine a man who abuses his
family, both mentally and physically. Was the

True Wealth, She Presents, By Juliet Schor
In Juliet Schor s True Wealth, she presents, argues for, and envisions an economy, which stresses on
the conceptualization of plentitude. In her publication, the main points can be broken down into three

serves as a concrete foundation for her proposed framework of a sustainable economic and

concept of the BAU or defined as business as usual economy. She emphasizes that the BAU economy
will yield less of a return in profitability in the coming decades with a possibility towards economic
stagnation, and an increase in unemployment rate as a result of industrial decline in profitability.
Furthermore, she illustrates how there will be an increase in environmental pollution and damages to
the world, and scarcities in resources due to abnormal climate change in relation to the profitability of
natural resource industries such as agriculture and so forth.
Throughout chapter 2 and 3, Schor condemns the notion of BAU growth and a higher GDP. She
presents an Ecological Footprint, Carbon Footprint, and Biocapacity on page 60, and breaks down the
basis of the Environmental Kuznet Curve (EKC) on page 73 75. Through the analysis of these figures,

The Assumptions Of Ability Grouping, Student Tracking And...
Abstract
This paper will dive into four common unwarranted assumptions made from ability grouping (student
tracking) and attempt to debunk the ideas. Ability grouping is the common educational practice of
separating students based on actual or purported ability in the same grade into different instructional
groups with differing levels of aptitude or achievement (Ainsworth 2013). The four assumptions that
will follow were researched by the former presidential professor in equity in the graduate school of
education and information studies at UCLA, Jeannie Oakes. Ability grouping or student tracking is in
fact illegal in the state of California but, institutions still find alternative ways to implement the
method.
Keywords: Ability Grouping, Students Tracking
Debunking the False Assumptions of Ability Grouping The four ability grouping assumptions are as
follow: (1) Students learn better when they are grouped with other students who have similar
academic skills or prior levels of achievement, (2) slower students develop more positive attitudes
about themselves and their education when they are not in daily classroom contact with those who are
brighter, (3) track placements are part of a meritocratic system with assignments earned by students
and accorded through fair and accurate means, and (4) teaching is easier when students are grouped
homogeneously, and teaching is better when there are no slower students to lower the common
denominator in the classroom

Space Engineering Personal Statement
Four years from now, I will be headed towards my goal of entering the engineering community. After I
assert myself into the field, and establish myself with a solid foundation in this field after graduation. I
plan on entering an engineering firm while working towards my Doctorate. I will vigorously pursue
my PhD. and goal of achieving and becoming a prominent member of the space engineering
community.
In my life, I have had many goals achieved. I have successfully and aptly defended our country in
times of war. My military service has given me many tools in life. My two most valuable skills:
adaptability and discipline, I credit the US Army. I have successfully climbed my way up to the top of

I have continuously self educated myself as an adult. I gained a very deep understanding of
formulating equations for advanced explosive techniques at the age of eighteen. This involved ignition
systems and placement of demolitions, using multiple chemical mediums. As a twenty year old, I
gained an understanding of passive infrared technology. I improvised a solution by removing heat
signature problems. I used an understanding of basic thermal dynamics, scientific method and basic
mechanical engineering to apply a solution to remove a specific heat signature. I took interest in clean
energy development during my mid to late twenties. I tested myself by creating my own solar panels
and improved solar cell efficiency. I implemented mirrors for efficiency as well as developing a
cooling system to prevent solar cell decay. I recently designed a theoretical improvement to modern
day alternators. By developing a magnetic belt drive, I eliminated key friction points to increase
efficiency in the electrical output of the alternator. My interest then progressed to HHO generators,
which expanded into the hypothetical development of a hydrogen motor. In my late twenties, I became
involved in developing a clean solution to growing sustainable food. I have recently designed and
tested my own aquaponics system, free from polluting the land or food

Two annually elected consuls convened the senate and the curiate and centuriate assemblies. Initially
the office was only open to patricians until the Lex Licinia opened it to Plebeian candidates in 367
BC. At the end of their annual term of service, Consuls would take the title Proconsul and generally
serve as provincial governors The Senate directed the magistrates, especially the consuls, in their
prosecution of military conflicts. The Senate also had an enormous degree of power over the civil
government in Rome. This was especially the case with regards to its management of state finances, as
only it could authorize the disbursal of public monies from the treasury. In addition, the Senate passed
decrees called senatus consultum, which was officially advice from the Senate to a magistrate. While
technically these decrees did not have to be obeyed, in practice, they usually were. During an
emergency, the Senate (and only the Senate) could authorize the appointment of a dictator. The last
ordinary dictator, however, was appointed in 202 BC. After 202 BC, the Senate responded to
emergencies by passing the senatus consultum ultimum ( Ultimate Decree of the Senate ), which
suspended civil government declared something analogous to martial law. Tribune (494BC)was a

The Progressive Movement
The Progressive Movement was a short yet very important time in American society. The time period
known as Reconstruction had now finished and the lives of many had been changed due to political
corruption, social injustices, and harsh labor practices. The Progressive Movement aimed to correct all
of these issues and to just improve the overall way of living for the average United States citizen.
Although the Progressive Movement did succeed in tweaking and revamping many of the issues that
had been a problem in the lives of many Americans, it unfortunately was only temporary seeing as
soon after the U.S. enters another war and inevitably after that, the Great Depression. Nevertheless,
the progressive movement did succeed in addressing these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Prohibition, the ban of alcoholic beverages, had started as the women s temperance movement , a
movement that simply called for the banning of all alcoholic beverages because of it was immoral.
Later, many women began calling for prohibition because of how it was effecting them at home, with
their husbands. Domestic abuse became very prominent in a household because many men after work
would visit these saloons or bars and just drink as a coping method many times bringing out the anger
in them and once they got home letting it out on their wives and children. All this lead to the passing
of the Prohibition Act which made the production, importation, transportation and sale of alcoholic
beverages illegal. This decision caused a split in American society basically dividing those who were
against the consumption of alcohol agreeing and supporting this law, and then obviously angered those
enjoyed drinking alcoholic beverages and did so on a regular basis. Unfortunately, this act eventually
branched into the creation of illegal bars, speakeasies, and nevertheless the illegal consumption of
alcohol all across cities in the United States. Realizing how counterproductive this law ended up being

The Success Of The Goal
The targets supporting the achievement of the goal can be measured, are indeed being measured but
fail to provide built in incentives or sanctions should these targets not be met or fulfilled. The idea is
to put a stop to deforestation, restore land and water ecosystems, protect the planet s biodiversity and
various species. Key to the success of the goal is the target to significantly increase financial resources
to support conservation, sustainable development and ensure equitable sharing and access to
resources. Although these targets can be measured, the accuracy of the data can be called into question
because government sources are not always the most trustworthy. Some geographical areas of the
world have shown to have skewed the facts ( Spot the Rancher ). The failure of the Kyoto accord and
the Canadian tar sands illuminate the uphill battle the UN faces in attaining their goal. As long as
elected officials choose to favour economic growth and profit over sustainable development and
equality the goal will not be achieved and the targets are irrelevant. The targets are measurable.
Organizations such as the World Resources Institute have been working to create an international
forest watch. With the use of satellites and technology that provides new ways of detecting
deforestation patterns, forests can be far more easily monitored an analyzed. This gives governments
an ability to police their forests and allows them to be alerted when certain areas are in danger

to decorating for a little boy. Most people want their little girls to be little princesses, but their little
boys to be little men. They do not want to fill a nursery with baby ish items. They want for it to look
like a young man s room. Perhaps that is why so many parents choose nautical crib bedding sets for
boys.
Why Parents Choose the Nautical Theme

preppy, but casually fun at the same time. It can be cute with cartoony whales and other sea creatures
or it can be more grown up with anchors and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

mascot, a tree, is entertaining a plethora of cheering fans with its funny twirls and dance moves. Some
may say that the Stanford Tree is a boring and dull mascot, However the Stanford Tree is anything but

colonized the collective unconscious of Stanford s student body (Marritz). As a general rule, if a

Battle Of Gettysburg Research Papers
The Battle of Gettysburg The Battle of Gettysburg has been known to many as the decisive turning
point of the Civil War. The battle itself was a Union victory that forced the Confederacy into a
defensive posture which ended General Lee s most ambitious attempt to invade Union Territory
(Gettysburg Foundation, 2017). The Battle of Gettysburg alone consisted of 67 Battery s in which
totaled 362 guns making it the largest artillery attack in United States history. This battle was a
historical landmark for the field artillery, as it established the field artillery as an effective firing
weapon system and paved the way for more accurate fires (Herhily, 1931).
The Battle of Gettysburg started on July 1, 1863 as a meeting engagement, after Robert E. Lee won
the Battel of Chancellorsville, Virginia. Lee was so successful in his last battle, decided ... Show more

Engaging double its number in guns this battery rendered adequate and accurate fire support during
the two hours in which the federal cavalry blocked the confederate advance for a few hours. Its fires
was notably responsible for the delay offered to the advance of Hill s leading brigades. However,
when the Union cavalry, 1st Corp, and 11th Corps tried delaying the Confederacy s further
advancement, additional Confederate reinforcements arrived on scene. As a result the Union soldiers
were forced to retreat further back to the town of Gettysburg to Cemetery Hill and Culp s Hill. The
Union attempted to defend these two hill tops with around 90,000 soldier and the 2nd Field Artillery,
but the Confederacy with 70,000 soldier launched a fierce attack on the Union. By the end of the day
of the 2nd of July the Confederates gained ground, even though the Union still held strong positons.
The battle continued on Culp s Hill, Cemetery Hill and Cemetery Ridge on the 3rd of July. Cemetery

First, current payout policies directly increase payout ratio by issuing large amount of new shares.
High payout ratio shows that the company has to spare a large amount of cash to pay dividends rather
than invest in more profitable projects.
In addition, given that dividends per share climbed slightly, earnings per share dropped greatly from
1.29 to 0.91, meaning current payout policies limit the value of shareholders.
Although riskier, debt financing helps company have a better financial structure and because Blaine
Kitchenware refuses to do so, we agree that their capital structure and pay out policies are not the most
appropriate for the firm.
2. Advantages and disadvantages of large share repurchase proposal
The large share repurchase should be recommended to Blaine s board. The followings are advantages
of share repurchase.
First, a large share repurchase will significantly increase shareholders percentage ownership of BKI.
BKI has been under levered for decades. The company acquisitions of several small manufacturers
made shareholders equity be diluted even more. In other words, shareholders, especially the main
shareholders in Blaine s board, are paying for BKI s over liquidity. This share repurchase will not only
give the board more flexibility to allot dividends, but will lead to a stable development of BKI s
business in the long run.
In addition, practically, conducting a large share repurchase by

The Core Of Android Architecture
It is the core of Android architecture that forms the foundation of Android. Linux kernel includes
hardware drivers, power management, memory management, process management and binder driver,
which provides all the fundamental services needed by the system. Although it is called Linux kernel,
it is not a standard Linux kernel; Google has customized it for Android devices. The main difference
between them is the binder driver, which is an Android specific inter process communication
mechanism that enables one Android process to call a procedure in another Android process. Another
major difference is the ashmem module, which is an Android version of shared memory allocator,
similar to Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX) shm but with a simpler file based API. And
also the Power Manager has been enhanced to save battery, which is critical for smartphones.
Libraries
On top of Linux kernel are Libraries, which provide services written in native language like C and
C++. It contains a long list of middle wares that include SQLite, WebKit, SSL, Media, C runtime
library. SQLite is responsible for database, WebKit is for browser support, SSL is used to secure
network transmissions.

Horror Movies Are All the same
Horror movies generally are all the same. They all have been based off of something that has already
happened or a previous movie. Society has paid to be entertained by these gruesome stories that we all
truly fear. Before movies, people would purchase books of similar traumatic events to read in their
spare time for amusement. It has been said by the Filmmakers IQ s horror film lesson (2012), that
writers such as Bram Stoker created graphic novels that would grab the audience s attention for years
to come. But the horror movie, The House Of The Devil (1896), was noted as being the first ever
horror movie. And as the years pasted, the industry grew and became stronger. But Ryan Koo (2013)
stated that it was not truly until after WWI ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Stoker s heir still ended up suing, and the courts ordered all copies of Nosferatu be destroyed. But a
single copy of the film had been missed and later was revealed. The story of Dracula is continually
told and being remade even today. It is something that has always frightened people, so the industry
continues to build off it. The older generation of writers such as Bram Stoker and Mary Shelly are
known for German Expressionism. German Expressionism is responsible for creating The Cabinet Of
Dr. Caligari, which is still considered one of the greatest silence films created in the era. Ryan Koo
(2013) claims the film also took credit for being one of the first to example story board and having a
twist ending. Once the film had been created it lead people to explore the possibilities of the art of
horror. Following the creation of The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari was the making of The Golem. This film
continued to be remade over the years. Writters from New york State Writers Institute (2011) say it
started with a man by the name of Paul Wegener. He was fascinated by the legend of the Golem. The
story spoke of a giant clay monster that saved Pragues Jewish citizens for an emperor that believed
they were ritually killing children. Gothic Horror has to be one of the best forms of art. Which is
probably why film markers continue to go back to it. It played on both the thrill and the fear of

  • 2. Criminal Data Comparison Criminal Data Comparison Of Washington D.C and New York Anitra Watts CJS 231 Assignment 1 Criminal Data Comparison In 1927, the International Association of Chiefs of Police started a Committee on Crime Records as a system so that they can better collect uniform crime statistics. The committee felt that the offenses known to the law enforcement agencies would be the best to measure a majority of the incidences of crime in the United States of America. The committee evaluated the crimes based on its seriousness of the crime, the likelihood where the crimes had been reported, and how often the crime was being committed. The IACP selected seven crimes that they felt the law enforcement agencies would be responsible for reporting to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... New York s population at 17,999,657 with 99.8% of its law enforcement agencies reporting, the police department reported that in the city the total amount of murders in 2009 was 761. The only difference between the murder rates in the city ofWashington D.C. and New York is all because of the amount of people in New York compared to Washington D.C. Even though New York City has more murders, the amount of murders has been reduced due to New York s City zero tolerance policy. The amount of murders in New York has dropped from 2,262 murders to 767 between the years of 1990 and 1997 which in turn is big drop of 66% in the murder rate. The year of 1997 was the year that has had the fewest amounts of murders since 1967.The theory of the crime rates between New York City and Washington D.C. is that the cities poverty levels are so high in each city and that those living in poverty choose to commit crime s to supplement their lifestyle. It is also proven that people living in poverty have goals to achieve and the means to achieve these goals is by committing crimes to include murder and that achieving these goals they will feel a source of ... • 3. The Meditations By Marcus Aurelius The universe has a plan for all of us, and we need to follow it. When you asked me what book we should assign to all of our employees, I immediately thought about The Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. In The Meditations, you read of ways to live your life without fear of consequences. Forgetting past troubles and current issues will help our employees to work hard at what they have to do, working for our tire distribution company. The universe sets out our life before we are born and it is important to not let fear or mistakes get in the way of the future. If we assign everyone in the company, including those in satellite locations, Marcus Aurelius, I believe that our productions will benefit from the results. One perk of reading The Meditations is understanding the impact Stoicism has on a person and society as a whole. If all of our employees understood that everything happens for a reason and there is nothing you can do to change what has already happened, they will be able to focus on what is happening right now. In addition to realizing that the past is over, our employees who learned about Stoic philosophy through Marcus Aurelius will understand that the universe has set their path. If something gets in their way, they will be able to get past it knowing that that is how it is supposed to be. Since life has a set course and nothing can stop the way it will play out, our employees will learn to understand the fact that the only thing they have control over in their ... • 4. Analysis Of Livvie, And Girl By Eudora Welty Separate spheres is an ideology that defines separate spheres for women and men. This ideology surfaced during the Industrial Revolution, although the idea of gendered separation of spheres is much older. The notion of separate spheres dictates that men, based primarily on their biological makeup as well as the will of God, inhabit the public sphere the world of politics, economy, commerce, and law. Women s proper sphere , according to the ideology, is the private realm of domestic life, child rearing, housekeeping, and religious education (Kuersten, pp. 16 17). The theme in Livvie by Eudora Welty and in Girl by Jamaica Kincaid depicts how women are instructed to take care of the home through experience and submission which is defined by the sphere ideology. Eudora Welty has made significant contributions to the cause of American literature using themes that share the ideology of separate spheres. The story in question, Livvie , in principal is the renewal of the main character s life, from the realm of death. The story revolves around the life of Livvie, who is married to a much older man, Solomon. Although the married life provides some personal security and regularity, it lacks in passion. This makes her feel that she is entrapped in the relationship. While this sort of conflict had been explored and presented by many female writers of the last century, Eudora Welty s offering is not so prominent by the narrative method but by the story s thematic ... • 7. Reflection Paper On Baton Rogue You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you. John Bunyan. Last summer, I had the pleasure of doing just that. Baton Rogue in Louisiana was city devastated by flooding but united by service. Our church wished to help, and as luck would have it the St. Bernard Project organization would sponsor a volunteer group down to Baton Rogue to help rebuild houses. I wished to be a part of the group, and I was permitted after our youth director agreed to include the 9th graders as well. I was very excited and was ready to go. My sister, Hailey, would be going with me sorta like my guide. Little did I know that this trip would change my view of what it means to be an American and my ideas on volunteering forever. Our bus was loaded in the parking lot of the church, and after saying goodbye to our parents, I hopped on and settled down for a long ride. Twenty five hours is a very long time to be on a bus granted we stopped for meals along the way. When we finally pulled into the hotel in Baton Rogue, I wanted nothing more than to just get to our room and head to sleep. The real fun would begin the next day when we would finally get to work. I was not really sure what to expect the next morning. I knew I was going to work, but I didn t think of who I was working for and how much it would mean to them. Rest assured, I would figure all that out over the course of the week. Morning in Louisiana in the summer is not pleasant. The air is heavy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Each element gave the stage a different feel that matched every scene , complementing each brilliantly. The only element that lacked for me was lights, although very bright ; in my opinion the reoccurring blue wasn t the best option. I feel if the lighting designer would have had more warmer colored lights against the already vibrant set pieces, it would have made the stage pop more. But one thing i did particularly fancy, were the costumes the characters wore and how they fit each character. Each character s costume showed the dichotomy between the personalities and tastes of each individual. For example Ilona played by Jane Krakowski was dressed in a scarlet / pinkish dress with a high slit up the left side; showing her seductive character type. Meaning when i saw Ilona on stage, I immediately knew who i was looking at . • 11. In The Waiting Room Essay In the Waiting Room can be argued to be both the most discussed poem and the best poem of Bishop s. To her horror, the Elizabeth in the poem discovers that she is an I and one of them (PPL150). This thought, which is precipitated by numerous things, especially Aunt Consuelo s oh! and the horrifying breast of the women in the waiting room s copy National Geographic, plunges her into despair about society s order (PPL 149). In a way, this poem expresses both the awakening of oneself as a person and the awakening to their sexuality. Elizabeth is terrified of things that are associated with women, breast, a cry of pain, and as such she is forced to realize that she is a woman as well and, potentially, has the same fate as them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ostriker encourages the readers not to be shy as Bishop both yearns for and fears the erotic, experiences it as actual or potential pain, and produces screens to disguise the experience (241). These early works and their position on her childhood provide insight into Bishop s life, especially of her love of women, despite being indirectly about her sexuality. As such, these hidden ideas in her poems should be explored by the readers because it helps us to better understand her. The poems Bishop had published later in life, namely Insomnia, The Shampoo, One Art, and finally Sonnet, deal more with her reluctance to expose her sexuality than discovering it as she does in these earlier poems. Of the fourpoems listed above, Insomnia is the most concealed in terms of sexuality. Without proper insider knowledge, this poem could easily be overlooked, but its use of the term inverted signals to people that she is talking about her lesbian identity (PPL 54). Without the in group knowledge, Bishop can hide her discussion of sexuality in this poem which is otherwise freely discussed. The last stanza imagines the world inverted where you love me and ultimately states that Bishop wants a world like this (PPL 54). Ideas of gender roles and how they interact with sexuality causes Bishop to hide her true thoughts and feelings and only in an inverted world can she thrive. Still, as Harrison points out the tone in this poem is both bitter and defiant. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Criminalization Of The Mentally Ill In The Prison System Criminalization of the Mentally Ill When discussing the criminalization of mentally ill persons within the prison system, it is important to know the history of mental illness in the prison system. In1841, Dorothea Dix began her Asylum Movement. She saw how deplorable the conditions were for mentally ill inmates in the prison system and insisted on change. The mental ill inmates were treated very poorly, being beaten, starved, and sexually abused. Dix brought her findings to the legislature of Massachusetts and funds were then set aside to expand the mental hospital in Worcester. This was then duplicated across the country and many of the mentally ill were taken out of the prison setting and moved to get appropriate care (history.com staff, 2009). This was in the 1840 s. Dix s efforts helped to decrease the amount of mentally ill in jails without appropriate care. Her efforts resulted in prisons containing only 0.7 per cent of mentally ill inmates (Chaimowitz, 2012, p 1). Today, prison s are again becoming the number one spot for the mentally ill to occupy. This increase is related to the discovery and use of psychotropic medications, which came into the picture in the 1950 s and 1960 s. This discovery of medication led to many psychiatric patients being released from psychiatric hospitals with the intention of them receiving treatment out in the community through primary care providers and clinics. • 13. Salinity Stress on Plants Essay examples Salinity Stress on Plants All plants are subjected to a multitude of stresses throughout their life cycle. Depending on the species of plant and the source of the stress, the plant will respond in different ways. When a certain tolerance level is reached, the plant will eventually die. When the plants in question are crop plants, then a problem arises. The two major environmental factors that currently reduce plant productivity are drought and salinity (Serrano, 1999), and these stresses cause similar reactions in plants due to water stress. These environmental concerns affect plants more than is commonly thought. For example, disease and insect loss typically decrease crop yields by less than ten percent, but severe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The plants that grow in saline soils have diverse ionic compositions and a range in concentrations of dissolved salts (Volkmar et al., 1998). These concentrations fluctuate because of changes in water source, drainage, evapo transpiration, and solute availability (Volkmar et al., 1998). Due to these varying conditions, plant growth depends on a supply of inorganic nutrients, and this level of nutrients varies in time and space (Maathius and Amtmann, 1999). Either extreme condition concerning nutrients results in deficiency or toxicity in plants, and this is demonstrated by salt tolerance (Maathius and Amtmann, 1999). These conditions vary according to the plant species and growth conditions. Little is known about the genetic basis for diversity of salt tolerance in plants, and this could be partly explained through the definitions given for salinity. Plants in natural environments are being exposed to increasing amounts of salinity. One third of the land being irrigated worldwide is affected by salinity, but salinity also occurs in non irrigated land (Allen et al., 1994). There are large areas of primary salinity, but secondary salinity can be detected within one hundred years of settlement on an area of land. Drought and salinity are connected because in many regions, raising plants requires irrigation. The irrigation water contains calcium, magnesium, and sodium (Serrano et al., 1999). As the water evaporates and transpires, calcium and magnesium ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. Argumentative Essay On Organic Farming Organic farming has become a central decision for various farmers and eliminates conventional farming practices. Conventional farming has put a risk on both the grower and the people consuming the products. Although genetically modified food has provided the masses with quicker access to food sources, it has also impacted people with many issues unlike organic farming such as Polyface Farms. Therefore, farms should gear towards organic farming like Polyface Farms because it reduces the risk of environmental impacts in agriculture due to climate change, depletes the need for genetically modified food by inducing a nutritious diet reducing health risks, and drives an opportunity for higher wages to unconventional organic farmers. Unlike conventional farming practices, organic farming eliminates the chances of environmental climate change. In this case, organic farming can repeal greenhouse effects caused by pollution in the air and the sources of the people s food supply. Based on the documentary film Food Inc, a man by the name of Gary Hirshberg, CEO of Stonyfield Farms, addresses the basis of The [arresting of] global warming and reversing the toxification of our air, our food and our water (1:00:37 1:00:42). Cold climates can have their drawbacks as well. For instance, if you live in areas that have freezing temperatures, then you might be familiar with what damage frozen water pipes in your home can do. If you do not know a pipe has frozen and has been damaged, when the frozen water thaws enough to allow water flow to return, this is when unexpected flooding can occur due to a burst pipe. Frozen water applies thousands of pounds of pressure per square inch on a pipe, so it is no wonder that they sometimes break. If you happen to be away from home when this happens, it spells disaster. If you have a pipe that burst unexpectedly, shuts off the valve to that pipe. You may need to turn off all the water to your home. The more quickly you can get the water off, the less flooding there will be. If appliances or any electrical thing is getting wet, turn off the electricity first, then the water. After you get the water off, clean up the flood as quickly as you can to prevent damage to your floors, walls, appliance, cabinets, or furniture. If plumbing is not your thing, then call one. • 16. Hurdle And Gerrit Cole In Major League Baseball Imagine it is the final game of the Major League Baseball (MLB) season in the seventh inning of an interleague game between the National League (NL) Pittsburgh Pirates and the American League (AL) Toronto Blue Jays. Gerrit Cole is pitching for the hometown Pirates and is having an exceptional game, allowing only one unearned run. The Jays lead 1 0 and Gerrit Cole is up next to bat. The question then for General Manager, Clint Hurdle, is whether to pinch hit for him in exchange for a better hitter, or to leave him in the game so he can continue to pitch. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What it comes down to is the difference between the need to do something and the option to do something. None other than Bill James, a widely known baseball writer, noted that the perceived strategy is actually very trite, predictable, and actually nonstrategic. Instead of manager s deciding on what substitution, or lack thereof, can give their team an advantage, they are forced with situations in which they must bunt, must pinch hit, and must double switch. As James notes, the American League game allows a true option, and thus true strategy. This means that whatever AL managers decide to do when it comes to offensive batting substitutions, they do so to benefit their team, not because they are forced to do so (Meehan, 2013). These substitutions, including the commonly used double switch where a pinch hitter is substituted for the pitcher and the next inning is substituted again for a relief pitcher, take up time in the game. It is significantly a problem in the MLB where the longevity and the slow pace of the game has caused many fans to get bored sitting through a full nine innings. Especially with the addition of instant replay, the game continues to get longer and it has become a challenge for many fans to watch an entire game. Brian Costa, sports reporter for the Wall Street Journal, wrote an article about the reasons for the length and slow pace of the game. He mentions that it has become normal for fans to complain about hitters stepping out of the batter s box, pitchers pacing around the mound and pitching changes. Red Sox Chief Operating Officer Sam Kennedy even states that this problem is one of the most critical issues facing baseball as we move forward into the next three, five, seven years (Costa, 2014). Obeying to a higher authority shows that someone has faith in the judgment of the one giving the orders, while it is the result of unbelief when someone disobeys against the word of those who are higher in authority. In some cases it is necessary to obey to the orders one is given, but in life there is always the tough decision one must come to, whether to obey the authority and cower down or disobey their request and do the right thing. • 22. Analysis Of The Novel Nervous Conditions In the novel Nervous Conditions, Tsitsi Dangarembga explores the concepts of power and oppression. Speaking up about oppression can liberate a person, so the people in charge do not want the oppressed to speak up. In Nervous Conditions, males have much more dominance in life than females. Maiguru, Nyasha, and Lucia all attempt to stand up for themselves against oppression, with little success. Dangarembga develops the characters Maiguru, Nyasha, and Lucia in order to convey how speaking out against oppression is necessary but not sufficient to gain power. Nyasha vocally resists when she feels oppressed because she refuses to accept being controlled. However, as a child, she must defer to her parents whether she likes it or not. Early in the novel, Maiguru questions if Nyasha should read Lady Chatterly s Lover, a book that contains many Western themes and ideals, because that s not very good...[she doesn t] want [her] to read books like that . Nyasha retorts, What s all the fuss about anyway? It s only a book and I m only reading it (75). The controversy of Lady Chatterly s Lover causes Maiguru to label it as not very good . Italics place extra emphasis on the words book and reading , because these two words are associated with gaining knowledge, and therefore gaining power. • 23. The Lives Of Animals ( 1999 ) In The Lives of Animals (1999), a metafictional novella about animal right by the South African novelist J.M. Coetzee, the author posits through his character representative, Elizabeth Costello, that animals are not believers in ecology (Coetzee 151). We are told to believe based on the previous ruminations of Costello, who outlines early in part I The Philosophers and the Animals section that animals do not possess reason, and as a result, animals cannot hope to comprehend the way in which the complex ecosystems that are present in the study of ecology in any meaningful way (Coetzee 137). This claim is important to Costello in that it is the very foundation of everything else she argues within her debate, as she cites that to approach the ethics of the animal rights argument from any spectrum of our understanding of reason is to do so from a flawed point of view, as animals do not possess reason and therefore cannot be judged and evaluated under that system fairly, or even at all. While Costello s claims certainly present an interesting point, they are troubling and ultimately flawed in their approach. I strongly disagree with Costello s claim that animal are not believers in ecology because she is wholly enamoured with the idea of reason being an impossible judge of animal rights, going so far as to say that if reason is all she shares with her philosophical opponents, then she has no use for it (Coetzee 133). Palestinians claim that these were their homes and they have a right to return to them Israelis, on the other hand, generally, find the idea of such an exponential return of Palestinians to the heart of Israel frightening since it may override the ratio of balance of Palestinians to Israelis as well as importing possible terrorism (e.g. Quandt, 2005) The refuge problem first initiated with the 1948 War Which Israelis dub the War of Independence and Palestinians call the Nakba when some 700,000 Arab residents (85%) left their home, some voluntarily, others forced, finding refuge in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and the Gaza Strip, which was then administered by Egypt. It is most notably accomplished through the acquisition of territory or gaining control of foreign political or economic systems. Capitalism, by nature, is imperialistic. While this system is not driven by nationalism, it does facilitate competitive rivalry, and it s often distinguished by its usage of economic competition. Wage workers are hired by competing businesses in an industry, and these businesses strive to outperform each other. The most effective businesses sustain their dominance in the market by equipping themselves with the latest tools and tactics to gain increasing amounts of capital. From there, they continue to efficiently expand their territory to maximize profit and increase market power. Smaller businesses that do not efficiently grow their profit margin and increase their market share tend to fail in the shadows of these more powerful businesses. The natural tendency of capitalism is to spread. Corporations are in constant pursuit to keep gaining access to new or untouched markets that will grant them the best prices for their products and services. • 36. Budget Is Important For An Organization Budget Knowing what resources are available is important for an organization to function. The organization runs the risk of depleting resources or not using their resources effectively to accomplish the organizations mission if resources are not accounted for. According to Dr. Dean s PowerPoint, budgeting is the administrative activity of planning that determines what resources are needed and how they should be supplied/applied. It should be noted that a budget is a planning tool. According to Robert Welch, the administrative activity of budget was listed last of the seven elements that made up the process of planning, he proposes his reasoning, For if planners seek the mind of God in establishing their objectives and the parameters...then money will not be a problem because God will empower that which He wants done in the church or religious organization (Welch, 167). It is wise for a church to develop a budget, thereby ensuring that they are being good stewards of their resources. There are three basic budgets to operate by. The government and military use a zero based budget. Every year the budget starts at zero. Each budget unit must be justified for the next year. The key advantage to this system is that each budget unit is reviewed and analyzed every year (welch, 168). This allows the organization to determine if more or less resources should be requested in regard to the budget item. It also allows the organization to assess the need for the budget unit. ... • 37. The Pros And Cons Of Nurture As you sit watching the evening news, a story comes on explaining that a man was arrested for killing an innocent family in a random neighborhood. You ask yourself, How could a person do something so cruel? For years, people have researched what makes a person a criminal. Are we born with the qualities that make us a criminal or do we develop those qualities through the experiences we encounter in our lifetime? Answering this decade old question requires comparing and contrasting both sides of the theory concerning human development. Is human development the result of nature, nurture, or a combination of both? Criminal like behavior and characteristics develop because of experiences throughout our lifetime, but in some cases, there may be a few exceptions as to why a person becomes a criminal (Mcleod, Saul). What is nurture? Nurture is the term in psychology used to explain that environmental factors have an impact on human development. Influences such as childhood experiences, our upbringing, and socioeconomic status can have an impact on our personality and the person we become. According to many people who study psychology and lifespan development, nurture contributes the most when it comes to the development of humans because external factors potentially leave the biggest impact on the human brain (What is Nurture?). How does nurture work? Nurture can be described in many ways. For instance, imagine a man who abuses his family, both mentally and physically. Was the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In her publication, the main points can be broken down into three separate categories: challenges, the ideals of plentitude, and the four fundamentals or solution towards plentitude. The collection of formal analysis and insight towards key economical concepts and data serves as a concrete foundation for her proposed framework of a sustainable economic and environmental future. In chapter 1, page 12 20, Schor present a series of statements to criticize on the sustainability and concept of the BAU or defined as business as usual economy. She emphasizes that the BAU economy will yield less of a return in profitability in the coming decades with a possibility towards economic stagnation, and an increase in unemployment rate as a result of industrial decline in profitability. Furthermore, she illustrates how there will be an increase in environmental pollution and damages to the world, and scarcities in resources due to abnormal climate change in relation to the profitability of natural resource industries such as agriculture and so forth. Throughout chapter 2 and 3, Schor condemns the notion of BAU growth and a higher GDP. Abstract This paper will dive into four common unwarranted assumptions made from ability grouping (student tracking) and attempt to debunk the ideas. Ability grouping is the common educational practice of separating students based on actual or purported ability in the same grade into different instructional groups with differing levels of aptitude or achievement (Ainsworth 2013). The four assumptions that will follow were researched by the former presidential professor in equity in the graduate school of education and information studies at UCLA, Jeannie Oakes. Ability grouping or student tracking is in fact illegal in the state of California but, institutions still find alternative ways to implement the method. Keywords: Ability Grouping, Students Tracking Debunking the False Assumptions of Ability Grouping The four ability grouping assumptions are as follow: (1) Students learn better when they are grouped with other students who have similar academic skills or prior levels of achievement, (2) slower students develop more positive attitudes about themselves and their education when they are not in daily classroom contact with those who are brighter, (3) track placements are part of a meritocratic system with assignments earned by students and accorded through fair and accurate means, and (4) teaching is easier when students are grouped homogeneously, and teaching is better when there are no slower students to lower the common denominator in the classroom ... The Success Of The Goal The targets supporting the achievement of the goal can be measured, are indeed being measured but fail to provide built in incentives or sanctions should these targets not be met or fulfilled. The idea is to put a stop to deforestation, restore land and water ecosystems, protect the planet s biodiversity and various species. Key to the success of the goal is the target to significantly increase financial resources to support conservation, sustainable development and ensure equitable sharing and access to resources. Although these targets can be measured, the accuracy of the data can be called into question because government sources are not always the most trustworthy. Some geographical areas of the world have shown to have skewed the facts ( Spot the Rancher ). The failure of the Kyoto accord and the Canadian tar sands illuminate the uphill battle the UN faces in attaining their goal. The Battle of Gettysburg alone consisted of 67 Battery s in which totaled 362 guns making it the largest artillery attack in United States history.
