History In Kristin Levine s Lions Of Little Rock
There are several similarities and differences between the historical novel Lions of Little Rock
and the historical accounts based on the historical event school segregation and that took place
in 1958 in Little Rock, Arkansas. The historical fiction novel Lions of Little Rock is about
Marlee, 12 years old and shy, and took place when there were segregated schools. Marlee is white
and meets Liz, who is black they tried to be friends when it wasn t; allowed. The author Kristin
Levine used facts from history to create a realistic historical fictionstory.
The author, Kristin Levine, used several facts and details from history in their book Lions of Little

ВЁOnly the high schools are closedВЁand in the historical account Little Rock Central High School
National Historic Site, it states ВЁThe following year Faubus closed all high schoolВЁ. This shows
how the author used true facts in their novel. The second similarity between the book and the

Crimes And Crimes Of Children
Crimes can be committed by everyone. The age of criminals have decreased as the crime
committed increased in violence through time. Innocent lives are often lost in acts of violence,
such as what had happened at Columbine. Children who commit malicious crimes can either be
tried as a child or an adult. Children tried in the juvenile court systems are able to get out of jail
around or before they turn 21. Juvenile courts are meant to rehabilitate children who are said to be
too young to understand their actions. Adults who commit the same crimeas children are believed to
be fully aware of their actions and the repercussions. If a child is tried as an adult, then the child
can be given a longer sentence. Children who commit serious crimes should be tried as adults.
With time, the severity of the crimes committed by children have been seen to be worse.
Juvenile criminals, are still regarded by the law as children first criminals second (Collier 1).
The juvenile court was originally created to help rehabilitate children who commit crimes such as
stealing. Now the juvenile court can be seen harboring criminal who were well aware of the
vicious acts he or she have done such as a murderer. Statistics show that, crimes committed by
juveniles have increased by 60 percent since 1984 (Collier 1). The rapid increase of crimes that
occur shows how the system in place is not effective in the prevention of crimes. Government
statistics show that, Since 1965, the number of

The National Science Foundation ( Nsf )
The National Science Foundation (NSF) leads a $280 million initiative enabling researchers to
recreate the most destructive natural forces on Earth by shaking and rocking full sized structures.
[1] In one experiment, Professor Tara Hutchinson tests steel beam resilience on the apparatus, on
San Diego s outer limits. The earthquakemachine utilizes strain gauges and accelerometers
numbering in the hundreds to record the many forces that artificially induced seismic activity
places on the structure.
New building codes and retrofitting practices have emerged due to the successes achieved at the
NSF research site. As a result, $65 million will go toward similar research equipment facilities over
the next five years.
As for Hutchinson s experiment, she discovered structural weaknesses during pretest trials that
exerted little force on the test subject. The implication was that small earthquakes might weaken
buildings before large events occur without leaving external clues.
Learning From the Past
Researchers, such as Professor Hutchinson, establish new safety standards and construction
practices using empirical evidence. [2] Early natural hazard mitigation projects included massive,
expensive and untested hazard deterrents, such as levees and floodgates. After a natural disaster in
the 1960 s, engineers discovered that the structures damaged the natural, protective landscape and
offered insufficient hazard protection. Resultantly, engineers develop mitigation plans

Radical Feminism And Civil Rights Movement During 1967-1975
Radical feminism was birthed as a solution to patriarchy what women viewed as the sole reason of
their oppression during the Women s and Civil Rights Movement during 1967 1975. These
feminists believe that the world is governed through a patriarchal system where men control the
government, media, and the state, among other things. Thus, radical feminists deemed that the
presence of men resulted in their oppression. The goal for radical feminists is to completely
separate men from all aspects of life in order to heal, eradicate oppression, and develop in social
standing. Radical feminists shied away from structures they believed supported patriarchy such as
religion and family construction. They viewed the current family structure as a system

The Ethics Of File Sharing
CMSC 350 second paper Michael Montgomery
The Ethics of File Sharing
File sharing is the act of someone making a copy of a file and sending it to another person. The
method of sharing includes Internet peer to peer transfers, but also includes physical CD copies,
emails, and mobile storage devices. Companies are justified in focusing on physical CD sales and
online peer to peer file sharing, as their sales have potential to cause harm. Loss of sales is indeed
what is happening. Consumers need to be more aware of the risks of file sharing. File sharing
increases risks of viruses or loss of personal info. Education on the risks and side effects of file
sharing need to exist or be clearer to the younger audience. File sharing spreads hundreds ... Show

In Taiwan 1997, music sales hit 12 billion in their country specific currency. That statistic
dropped to 2 billion at 2012 due to the increasing amount of internet usage. (3) On further study
via surveying usage, riskiness, and preferences of media, people told an activity is likely to get
caught doing and has a large fine is 7% likely to continue performing. This statistic is vs 75%
likely to continue performing illegal acts if low risk of getting caught and low fines. (3) Using
this information, increasing estimated risk and increasing actual fines will have a great
reduction in piracy (3). To do that, high schools and colleges need to push the possibilities of
getting caught and the severity of penalties. Education on the risks of file sharing for consumers
can lead to reduction of piracy, and increased safety for users as well. File sharing doesn t just
affect big companies. Single artists and small bands have always strived to get their work out
and hopefully also for sales to continue making work. If consumers knew how businesses
worked and the years of time it takes for a product to become available, then they d be less likely
to steal via pirating. Piracy has protections, Recent research done by the Vienna University of

spread... Their analysis shows that about 50% of collected cracks and keygens tested are infected

Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) was 14/15 and she had no neurological deficits with the nerve, spinal
cord, or brain function, although she was still complaining of neck stiffness and pain in head.
Although the CT scans showed no evidence of subarachnoid haemorrhage, due to her very strong
history the patient was referred for further imaging through angiogram techniques. This included
use of catheters inserted under the skin to provide a contrast material which was detected through
the use of magnetic resonance imaging scans (M.R.I). The results for these again showed no

The ophthalmic artery connects to the circulatory anastomosis in the brain known as the Circle of

The resultant compression of this artery as a result of the build up of pressure caused by the onset

blurred vision and photophobia. This is a common symptom experienced by patients who develop

Freak The Mighty Theme
Theme of Freak the Mighty By:Chathan Shergill
Period:5
Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick is about Max and Kevin, also known as Freak ,
adventures as Freak the Mighty, slaying dragons and fools and walking high above the world.
(page 39 40) The story takes place in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The main character Max or
Maxwell is a large, very slow, but kind hearted person.Kevin or Freak is physically handicapped but
very intelligent kid and Max and he work together as a team called Freak the Mighty. The theme of
Freak the Mighty is the importance of Family . He distances himself from grim and gram, how his
family is messed up in the sense that his mother is dead, his father is in jail, and they don t say his
name, and finally he contrasts his family and other families, views his own family different.
To elaborate further on that idea, Philbrick shows that Max distances himself from his family(Grim
and Gram.)Gram and Grim, bless their pointed little heads, they re my mother s people, her parents.
(1.3)By calling them my mother s people, I got the idea that he is distancing himself from
them.Like if they dont belong with each other like he doesn t belong to them and they don t belong

Essay on Karl Marx s Estranged Labor
Karl Marx s Estranged Labor In Karl Marx s early writing on estranged labor there is a clear and
prevailing focus on the plight of the laborer. Marx s writing on estranged labor is an attempt to
draw a stark distinction between property owners and workers. In the writing Marx argues that
the worker becomes estranged from his labor because he is not the recipient of the product he
creates. As a result labor is objectified, that is labor becomes the object of mans existence. As
labor is objectified man becomes disillusioned and enslaved. Marx argues that man becomes to
be viewed as a commodity worth only the labor he creates and man is further reduced to a
subsisting animal void of any capacity of freedom except the will to labor. For... Show more content

He argues that this situation is analogous to a man and his religion. Marx writes, The more man
puts into God the less he retains in himself....The worker puts his life into the object, but now his
life no longer belongs to him but to the object. The result of the worker belonging to the object
is that he is enslaved. The worker belongs to something else and his actions are dictated by that
thing. For Marx, labor turns man into a means. Workers become nothing more than the capital
necessary to produce a product. Labor for Marx reduces man to a means of production. As a
means of production man is diminished to a subsisting enslaved creature void of his true nature.
In this condition he is reduced to the most detrimental state of man: one in which he is estranged
from himself. To help expand on this theme it is useful to look at Marx s allegory of man s life
activity. Of the variety of reasons Marx argues man is estranged from his labor, probably the
most significant is his belief that labor estranges man from himself. Marx argues that the labor
the worker produces does not belong to the worker so in essence the worker does not belong to
the worker. By virtue of this condition Marx argues the worker is enslaved. Enslavement for Marx
is a condition alien to man and he becomes estranged from himself. For Marx, man estranged from
himself is stripped of his very nature. Not only because

Native American Beliefs In Native America And Sir Walter...
Long before the first Europeans arrived Native Americans, had their own religions, lifestyles, and
customs. While these cultures were similar in some ways to the civilized nations, they were also
very different. Upon arrival in the New World some people, such as Thomas Hariot, set out to
document these new peoples, and their ways of life and, as was important in those days, their
religion. By informing people in England of the New World, more settlers would be likely to
come. If possible travelers are informed of their destination, there will be less apprehension about
going. Thomas Hariot was one such informer. An Englishman who accompanied Sir Walter Raleigh
on his voyage to establish a colony in the New World, he kept accounts of his explorations and
later had them published in his A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia. His
book described the land and people of Virginia as he traveled the country. One of the tribes he
wrote about and described was known as the Algonquin. Hariot described the people of the tribe as
being [C]lothed in loose mantles made of Deere skins and aprons of the same rounde about their
middle; all els[e] naked... allowing his English readers to realize the Algonquin were slightly
unprogressive compared to themselves in terms of clothing. Yet the author does not seem to look
down upon the natives for their rather primitive way of dressing. Mr. Hariot went on to describe
their lack of advanced tools and weapons: those

Frederick Douglass s Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick...
In the early 19th century, slavery was legal and popular in the southern states, among these slaves,
one slave in particular impacted the 19th century was Frederick Douglass. Although he was a
slave for most of his life, Douglass eventually became a freeman, a social reform, writer, and an
abolitionist for slavery. However, before he became a freeman, Douglass experienced a brutal life
as a slave. He faced dehumanization in his early life, but accomplished what most slaves we not
allowed to do; which is getting educated, by self educating himself and retaliating against the
idea of slavery. Furthermore, since he self educated himself, he was able to published the
narrative, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas; which, Douglass shows the audience how
methods such as, physical abuse, psychological abuse, and lack of education were used to
dehumanize slaves. He describes how he resisted these methods and realized that whites who
participated in slavery themselves were being dehumanized. One of the most known and infamous
way of dehumanizing slaves, was by abusing them. The most common abuse was whipping them;
however, there were others ways of punishing them, such as, the lack of food, water, clothing and
making them work long hours from the sunrise to sun down. Some slaveholders would only whip
their slave if they disobeyed them, though others did it to make them live in fear and most for the
satisfaction of it or to make fun of the slaves. This dehumanized slaves

Freud argued that the mind composed of three aspects, namely the id, ego, and superego, which
interacts to create complex human behavior. The three aspects are not physical entities within the
brain, but a concept of fundamental mental functions. Before the structural model, Freud (1990)
developed the topographical model of the mind which is an important aspect of id, ego, and
superego. Freud uses the term conscious, preconscious and unconscious to explain the different
surface configuration of the brain. The conscious is what the mind is currently aware of, whereas,
preconscious is the memories that can easily be brought to awareness. The unconscious is a region
that is inaccessible to the conscious memory, which Freud saw it as the source of desires where
many problems arise. Therefore, the structural theory also stresses the role of unconscious conflict

The Value Of A Country s Currency
In the world, every country has its own level of production and consumption of goods and services
called the economy. The economic activities allow each country to have its currency valued against
other currencies and this is called exchange rate. When you borrow money, there is a charge that
you pay in return on top of the borrowed amount called interest. Interest is usually calculated as per
annum and it influences exchange rates.
The value of a country s currency is affected by a cocktail of activities such as political stability,
productivity, inflation and many other things. Holding all other things constant, if a country s
interest rate change, this will affect its exchange rates, for example if the interest rates of the United
States dollar (US$) rises more than the British Pound, the US$ will become more powerful
compared to the British pound. In theory, if interest rates of a country increase, the money of that
country will become more valuable, but as I said above, many other things also influence the
exchange rates meaning that interest rate alone will not be good enough to determine the exchange
rate of a currency. The demand for goods produced by a country has a major impact too on the
performance of the country s currency. Counties whose goods are on high demand on an
international market can increase their interest rate too to make their currency hold high value. The
more valuable a currency is, the more it becomes on demand internationally. Because USA has a

What Is Normal
Do you think you are normal when you feel sad? Today, doctors will give people drugs to fix
their moods and label people with different fancy names like Depression and Hyperactivity
Disorder. People who are labeled with these kind of names might be considered as abnormal
because they have unusual characteristics from the majority. People also label the minority as
abnormal. Therefore, some people want to be fit into the category of normal. They start doing what
the majority does and they try to maintain their emotions in a certain level. They think they are
normal, but they are not. They somehow misunderstand the true meaning of what is normal. What
is normal should not be determined by the majority, and it is not depend on people s moods... Show

Today, social medias give tremendous impacts to everyone. What people usually see on the TV,
internet, or surrounding would influence their concepts of normality. For example, a person
who is still using an old fashioned cell phone might be considered as abnormal, because the
majority of people is using the latest smartphones. It is important for people to know they are
normal or not, because most of the people are feeling happy that they are normal. However, the
definition of being normal has indirectly manipulated by the majority. As long as people follow
what the majority does, they are parts of the majority and will not be abnormal at all. However,
that is not the meaning of normal but merely a part of the definition of norms, following what
most of the people do. If the normality is determined by the majority, same sex marriage will
never be accepted by the society. This is a very good evidence that shows what is normal is not
determined by the majority. In What Do We Mean by Normal ? , Maisel also tells us that normal
is not what people perceive all the time or what people perceive the most of. He clearly states that
normal means anything of value to right thinking people (Maisel 1). In other words, what is normal
is not depending on what the majority does. People should not blindly define normal as what the
majority thinks or acts, because normal is not determined by the majority. It is determined by
people who have the right

The Importance Of Language In The Chinese Language
Language is one of the many things covered in the book as the mothers in the book tend to have
a language barrier. The mothers started off in a country where they didn t speak the common
language. One of the mothers, Lindo Jong, says that, ...I tried to get a job as a salesgirl, but you
had to know English for that. She says this as she tries to find a job in a country she had recently
moved to. This language barrier continues even when she finds a job, ...She picked up one of the

Lindo Jong faces isn t just in English; she also faces this problem with her future husband as he

neither of us able to speak to each other in our Chinese dialects. Ultimately, the language barrier
helps her get engaged to her future husband: I don t know this word spouse. Tonight I will look in
my dictionary. Then I can tell you the meaning tomorrow. The mothers aren t the only ones who
have to deal with a language barrier. One of the daughters, Jing mei Woo, experiences this when
she goes to Chinato meet her half sisters, Aiyi and my father speak the Mandarin dialectfrom their

The Time Succeeding Herbert Hoover s Presidency

IB History of the Americas Period 10
13 December 2014
Essay Topic 2 Question A The time succeeding Herbert Hoover s presidency became a period of
reconstruction. The Great Depression caused thorough damage through the entire nation. Citizen s
trust stood nonexistent and their motives were vacant. Franklin Roosevelt came into office with
upfront critical responsibilities. In order to save what was left of the United States, Roosevelt had
to approach the detrimental economy with an open mind. He came up with many solutions, some
received questionable appraisal from the people such as the New Deal. The New Deal served as an
attempt to uplift the economy by assisting banks, creating jobs, and financing businesses. In
Roosevelt s mind, government affiliation was vital. The policies sparked controversy among
business owners as they argued it was unconstitutional and put capitalism at stake. The New Deal
proves effective in saving capitalism by initiating a strong federal government to regulate the
economy. After the collapse of the economy in 1929, banks were in crucial conditions. Citizen s
trust faltered as Hoover preached to them empty promises about how things would get better.
Franklin Roosevelt s mission with the New Deal was to recuperate all that was lost during Hoover
s presidency. Within the New Deal was passed the Federal Emergency Banking Act. This act helped
produce loans, credit and investment opportunities for the public. The production

OUTCOME 3
Give examples of being able to maintain legal and good practice requirements when assessing
occupational competence.
C. In carrying out assessment of occupational competence, I would ask myself:
How effective was my assessment and feedback?
Was there anything I didn t anticipate?
How did I deal with it?
What went well?
What could I improve?
If I had to change anything what would I do differently?
I would ask the learner what they intend to do and how they are ... Show more content on

This would be a write up on underpinning questions when a range has not quite been met. This
could also be a write up on a hair style that was achieved, explaining how they went about getting
the achieved look.
Insufficient evidence If a learner hands back their assignment but has not met the criteria covered,
they would be told there was insufficient evidence to complete the assignment. They would be
asked to add the required evidence making the assignment achievable.
Recognising prior learning This would be when a learner has completed a unit in another
qualification within the set time of the national standards. I would check their certification for proof
of this and get the learner to take the test of under pinning knowledge so they would not have to do
the same unit again. I would be able to document this in the learners log book with a RPL form,
the form would need to be signed and dated from the achieved date on the certificate.
C. To plan the assessment of occupational competence to address learner needs and current
achievements.
In my assessment plan I would identify any specific need that the learner may have e.g. Dyslexia (I
would check with the relevant department within the training establishment to see what help could
be offered to the learner i.e. extra time given for assignments and written tests). I would then agree
the level and extent of their current knowledge

Energy Radiation And Its Effect On The Cells
In the past, the applications of light, more specifically laser, in health and clinical applications have
been focused on its destructive phototoxic effects. This effect is associated with high energy
radiation, whereas low energy radiation has been found to induce a stimulating effect on the cells.
The heat inducing lasertissue ablation effect used in surgery and the disinfectant antimicrobial effect
of lighttherapy are distinctly different from the beneficial healing response stimulated by
photobiomodulation (PBM). The nonionizing and low power lasers used in PBM are in
wavelengths of visible (660 nm), near infrared(810 and 940 nm), and in some rare cases, mid
infrared (1040, 2940, 9400 or 10400 nm)1. In recent studies, due to... Show more content on

One of the challenges to use PBM in clinical treatments is the effective dose parameter; the
wavelength, irradiance, fluence, duration and delivery protocols are specific to each biological
scenario (alleviating pain and inflammation or stimulate regeneration)6,7 and the target area and
penetration depth. Another prominent challenge is that, even though clinical studies using low
level light therapy (LLLT) or PBM has been shown to be successful through a variety experimental
studies6,8, the study of the molecular mechanisms involved in the trigger release effects haven t
been well documented. Most of the molecular level studies have been based on inclusion exclusion
of certain genetic dispositions, growth factors and receptors9,10. This article will, however, focus
more on the low power laser technology its selection, modulation, application, potential
improvements, and also brief description on some of the important optical imaging techniques that
can be used in this research field to study the molecular mechanics and regenerative effects.
Improvement in laser technology can potentially improve the scope of application of lasers in the
area of study (regenerative medicine) I wish to focus on.

WATER PURIFICATION USING NATURAL HERBS Mr. Patil G.K. and Dr. Sadgir P.A.
Department of Civil Engineering,
Govt. College of Engineering, Aurangabad (M.S.) India gkp13@rediffmail.com ABSTRACT
In this paper, use of Moringa oleifera seeds for purifying water is discussed. A study was carried
out to know the efficiency of Moringa oleifera seed suspension for removal of turbidity and
hardness of water. Turbid water sample of low turbidity (50 mg/L) was prepared in the
laboratory using bentonite clay, kaolin clay and black cotton soil. Moringa oleifera seed
suspension was added as coagulant in concentration of 20, 40, 60, and 80 mg/L. The hardness
removal efficiency was checked on water sample from tube well in the vicinity of Aurangabad
city (India). The initial hardness of water sample was 284 mg/L. The dosages of Moringa
Oleifera seed suspension were 125, 250, 375 and 500 mg/L. In addition to hardness, effect on pH,
electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids and salinity was also studied. Moringa Oleifera seed
suspension was found to be effective in treating the water.
Keywords: Moringa oleifera Seed, Turbidity, Hardness and Extraction INTRODUCTION
Aluminum and ferric salts are the mainly used coagulants all over the world for treatment of water.
However, their application may have considerable disadvantages, the most important being possible
negative effect on consumers health. Several studies reported that chemical coagulants remain in

Analysis on Conversation Features. Differenfes Between...
INTRODUCTION The purpose of our project is to find and analyze conversational features and
discover if there are any differences between American and British English. In order to achieve
our aim, we have selected as a corpus two chapters of distinct TV series: The first one from the
American series ‒Six Feet Under‒ and the other one from the British series Teachers. Our
corpus contains approximately 12000 words, each script having around 6000 words. Both series
belong to comedy genre, with adult characters of similar age and social status. Both series reflect
the real use of language in their respective societies. They were released in similar dates, between
2001 and 2002. Six Feet Under is a black comedy drama of a group of people, who... Show more

6. Conversation employs a vernacular range of expressions It usually takes place in an informal
context. That is why contractions, double negation, and use of extended forms stated as
incorrect by the prescriptive grammarians can be found. Also in this group would be included
regional dialects. 2 ANALYSIS In this part we are going to analyze the two scripts we have
chosen. We have counted and classified the conversational features. In order to support the
results, some tables are included. Both texts have similar characteristics, so we have explained
each feature showing some examples taken from our corpus. 1. Conversation takes place in a
shared context Speakers share a lot of contextual knowledge in conversation. It is marked
grammatically by a very high frequency of pronouns (as contrasted with a very low frequency of
nouns), deictic words, substitute ellipsis and pro forms, and non clausal or fragmentary
components such as inserts. The most remarkable feature is the ellipsis (signaled here by О”). This
feature is a way of simplifying grammar through omission. We have distinguished three types
according to the place of occurrence they have in the sentence. Initial words substituted by initial
ellipsis (also called situational ellipsis) can be easily understood from the situational

Mary Shelly and the Romantic Era
The story written by Mary Shelly reflects the mood of the Romantic era in numerous ways. Some
of these themes include views on science, changes in the weather across Europe, mistrust of
advancements in science and the role of disease and death and the loneliness that resulted. The
experiences of Shelly and even the setting and location where she formed the idea for Frankenstein
display interesting themes of the time period. Disease and death were a common theme
throughout the Romantic era. Not only did it affect Shelly s life directly, the topic of personal
loss was evident throughout her novel. The murders of Victor s family and friends by the
monster displayed this theme but it was also on display early in the book with Victor s mother
catching the Scarlet Fever and dying after attending to Elizabeth during a bout of the same.
Disease, tragedy and death seemed to be a sad but very common part of life during this time
period. Interestingly, changes in the climate and weather of Europe were a key factor in the idea of
Frankenstein coming about. Due to this inclement weather, a period of time was spent indoors by
Mary, her husband and some of her friends. After discussions about ghost stories, gothic writings
and reanimated corpses, Mary s imagination rose to the occasion and after a nightmare one night
Frankenstein was born. As a side note, I also found the mood the Frankenstein book felt cold and
gloomy throughout. Although the scenery

The Tragedy Of Jason And Medea
The Tragedy of Jason and Medea The Greek myth of Jason and Medea is complex and changing.
Having developed orally, the story differs based on sources, but the main narrative stays the same.
The story can be broken up into two parts. The beginning is the oral myth that starts with Jason
when he was a baby and tells the story of his journey on the Argos, quest for power, marriage to
Medea, betrayal of his wife, and, eventually, his death. Secondly, the play Euripides wrote, Medea,
picks up near the end of the story, after Jasonhas already betrayed Medea. The story of Jason and

College Free Tuition Should Not Be Free
College Free Tuition Education is one of the best ways to succeed; however not everyone has
access to it and not everyone has the opportunity to have a degree. After high school a lot of
students drop out because the college tuitions are too expensive; they can t afford them. A couple

students who are serious. It means, in order to qualify, the students have to maintain a 2.5 grade
point average C+, and they have to be full time and be able to transfer to a 4 years college. Other
people believe that community collegeshould not be free because of the following reasons; the
program extends the welfare and encourages people to depend on government and not everyone
needs to go to college. A study of the arguments will show that community college education
should be free. According to Linda Conner Lambeck article, The job expectation in the coming
years will require at least an associate s degree are projected to grow twice as fast as jobs
requiring no college experience. The United States needs more college graduates in other to
improve the economy. So making the community college free for students it is one of the best

Factors That Affect The Food Intake Lose Weight
Obesity rates in America continue to raise since the 1980 s. Typically most Americans will start
to see their weight increase into adulthood and rapidly increase after age 40 (Roberts, 2005).
Numerous diet plans offer different suggestions on how best to address a person s food intake
lose weight. One such method is to use the Glycemic Index as a guide to making healthier food
choices. I present an executive summary of my findings based the Glycemic Index and its
moderate evidence of implications in the management obesity in metabolically healthy adults. As
food is consumed and passes through the gastrointestinal tract the body releases specific enzymes,
peptides, and hormones to breakdown the food (chyme), absorb the nutrients, and get the nutrients
to tissues which need them. This process occurs quickly, within 30 minutes of the chyme entering
the small intestines. One hormone of particular interest is insulin, which regulates the body s
blood glucose levels. When blood glucose levels are high, after consuming a meal, the pancreas
will release insulin from its beta cells. Insulin inhibits gluconeogenesis of the liver and stores
glucose as energy reserves within tissues: muscle, cardiac, liver, and adipose. The coordination of
the body s organs and hormones to release hormones and move glucose out of the blood are
critical to preventing hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia, both of which can be deadly (Gropper,
2013). The premise of the Glycemic Index is to minimize the

Essay on analysis of She Walks in Beauty
Analysis of Byron s She Walks in Beauty
Lord George Gordon Byron was most notorious for his love affairs within his family and with
Mediterranean boys. Since he had problems such as incest and homosexuality, he did not mind
writing about his love for his cousin in She Walks in Beauty . Byron wrote the poem after he left
his wife and England forever. Byron made his own trend of personality, the idea of the Byronic
Hero . Byron s influence on European poetry, music, novels, operas, and paintings have been
immense, although the poet was widely condemned on moral grounds by his contemporaries (Dick,
54). Overall, the study focuses on the life of Lord George Gordon Byron, imagery, and about the

This attitude of self reliance is a distinguishing characteristic of both Lord Byron and his literary
figures (Parker, 88).
She Walks in Beauty starts off from a traditional picture of a lady as fair and bright. It links with
the brightness of daylight, in its comparison of the mistress to the night. The distinctive quality of
the poem derives not from any departure from the norm but from a graceful elaboration of the
conventions of compliment (Seifter, 82). Avoiding unoriginal or obvious similies, Byron uses
metaphors which expresses the idea of a quiet and slight glow. The mistress like the night/ Of
cloudless climes and starry skies (ll 1 2), not pitch dark but glimmering with a diffused light
(Seifter, 82). She is like a portrait in chiaroscuro , her face is copied through an interaction of light
and shadow.
Bhakta 3
Her hazy beauty makes daylight seem bright. Imagery drawn from painting continues as a poet
discusses the shades, rays, and tints that compose the mistress s particular radiance (Seifter, 82).
The flowing lines, rhymes, and imagery of light and dark give the impression of elegant and simple
compliment.
The poem starts off brilliantly. The first four lines are beautifully phrased, and the opening couplet
in particular has ingrained itself in the collective consciousness (Blair, 1). She walks in beauty, like
the night/ Of cloudless climes and starry skies;/ And all

Who Is Oedipa Maas The Crying Of Lot 49
In The Crying of Lot 49, Oedipa Maas realizes that she is a captive maiden [in the] tower of her
dull suburban life (Pynchon 11). The confines of her daily existence model the sort of closed
system in which the effects of entropy are most visible. We see Oedipa s isolation increase through
the course of the novel, and, in keeping with the theory of entropy, her life takes on an increasingly
chaotic quality. Communication is the key, crie[s] Nefastis, the entropy obsessed scientist, in The
Crying of Lot 49(Pynchon 84). It is significant that Nefastis cried this phrase out; we are reminded
of the larger context of the novel and the mysterious titular crying. Pynchon s novel resists a
simplistic interpretation, but the theme of communication is in fact a highly appropriate lens

How Was Frederick William Successful
Frederick William the Great Elector of Brandenburg Prussia is the most absolute monarch.
Frederick William s achievements/successes make other monarchs such as Elizabeth Tudor seem
weak and powerless. Therefore, it gave him the name as the Great Elector. With increasing the
power and importance by expanding the military and encouraging religious toleration, he still had
an abundance of successes. After his reign from 1640 1688, his son carried on his succession.
When Frederick first inherited his father s successions, he found Prussia. Because he wanted a
large, strong army, Prussia became the prefect source. It was small with open territory and no
frontiers to defend. The army had 30,000 men by 1688 with its peak of 40,000 men.

Cocain and amphetamines are Addictive and Dangerous Essay
Cocaine and amphetamines are highly addictive and dangerous drugs that have affected our
society today. There have been various forms of cocaine and amphetamines that have become
popular and abusive throughout the United States. The forms of cocaine are: powder and crack,
and these two forms are seen as highly dangerous to the individuals that abuse it. Also, there are
several types of amphetamines which have been noted to be just as addictive and dangerous as
cocaine. In this paper I will briefly discuss the different forms of cocaine and amphetamines as well
as discuss the treatment options used for individuals with cocaine and amphetamineabuse.

attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), they are still considered to be an addictive and a
quite dangerous stimulant (Drug use and abuse, 2011, p. 120).
According to Emrick, Lassen, and Edwards (1977), the treatment options that are available for
individuals addicted to cocaine or amphetamines would consist of peer self help groups (Drug
use and abuse, 2011, p. 372). It was stated by Regier et al., (1993) that a national survey showed
over 1.5 million individuals in the United States using self help groups to overcome their drug
abuse (Drug use and abuse, 2011, p. 373). In the self help group, the individual must first be ready
or motivated to make the changes before attempting to join. There are also professional drug
rehabilitation facilities, but not all individuals are able to afford to attend those costly facilities.
In conclusion, the different forms of cocaine and different types of amphetamines are all considered
addictive and dangerous to our society. Even though, there are medicinal uses for cocaine and
amphetamines, there are side effects that can make life for the individuals

Essay about Homeless Children In America
Homeless Children in America
To be homeless is to not have a home or a permanent place of residence. Nationwide, there is
estimated to be 3.5 million people that are homeless, and roughly 1.35 million of them are children.
It is shown that homeless rates, which are the number of sheltered beds in a city divided by the
cities population, have tripled since the 1980 s (National Coalition for Homeless, 2014). Worldwide,
it is estimated that 100 million children live and work on the streets. Homeless children are more at

and upper respiratory infections are five to ten times more likely to develop while being a

pregnant since being homeless (Kryder Coe, 1991). Sexually transmitted diseases are also seven
to eight times more likely to be contracted by homeless youth than normal youths. Alcohol and
substance abuse, as well as severe psychotic disorders, are somewhat common in homeless
children, but almost nonexistent among normal children. Child Welfare Services (CWS) major

Summary Of John Searle s Argument
John Searle first proposed the argument known as The Chinese Room Argument in a book he wrote
in 1984. The argument is well known if not famous and has become one of the best know
arguments in recent philosophy. Searle imagines himself locked in a room following a computer
program for responding to questions written in Chinese characters slipped under the door. Searle
does not understand Chinese writing, but he can follow the computer program to manipulate
symbols and numerals to easily respond to the questions without fully understanding even what he
was being asked or responding. The narrow conclusion of the argument is that following
instructions and programming a computer might make it seem to understand Chinese but doesn t

Due to the fact that Searle is inside the room and does not actually understand Chinese, he claims
the Chinese Room cannot be cognitively. Therefor, the Chinese Room would be functionally
equivalent but not cognitively equivalent to the native Chinese speakers and furthermore, if the
Chinese Room can imitate understanding without truly having it, then both Strong AI and
Functionalism would have to be invalid. Functionalism s imperative is to show that functional
equivalence must always equal cognitive equivalence, so if one could show functional equivalence
did not equal cognitive equivalence then Functionalism would be invalid. Additionally, if a
computer or some other system could imitate intelligence without retaining understanding, then
strong AI would be invalid as well. Strong AI is the view that if a machine can successfully imitate
human intelligence in a way that it becomes functionally and cognitively equivalent to a mind, then
the computer itself is a mind. Strong AI and its advocates respond to Searle s claims by applying
the Systems Reply. The Systems Reply states that despite the fact that Searle does not understand
Chinese in the Chinese Room, the system as a whole does in fact understand Chinese. Just because

Women s rights has been a topic debated for many years. Unfortunately, it is still a struggle today.
It is discussed in many other topics such as, ethics, religions, history, law, medicine, and politics.
The government has also had an immense part in this controversy and subtopics. This topic also
includes the subtopic of reproductive rights. There has been several Supreme court cases regarding
women s rights and reproductive rights. Women s rights are involved in so many factors, yet many
women worldwide struggle for these basic human rights.
The topic the researcher chose was women s rights. She chose this topic due to the increasing

In San Jose, thousands got together and rallied in order to support Planned Parenthood. These
protestors wore shades of pink and held signs with quotes that support women and their decisions.
In this article, it discusses how making abortion illegal does not make women not have abortions it
ends safe abortion. (Article 10) This shows the reader that eliminating abortion will not end it,
but end safe abortion performed by doctors. Instead, women will have to search for
unprofessional men to end their pregnancy, which is dangerous. Another popular protest was the
Women s March. Protesters held signs like women s rights are basic human rights (Article 4)

Separation Between Classes In Pride And Prejudice And My...
Movie Text Analysis: Class Separation between classes has been evident ever since societies
have been begun. At some points in history, the differences in the classes were more noticeable
than other times. The movies, Pride and Prejudice and My Fair Lady, represent different classes,
and how they interact with each other. Even though the movies are set in different time periods,
the interactions between the classes are very similar. Although both movies show the differences
of the society classes, My Fair Lady shows the differences of the classes in a more obvious
manner than Pride and Prejudice which tends to show the differences in a more subdued manner.
In Joe Wright s 2005 Pride and Prejudice, the setting is around the beginning of the 1800 s in rural
England. The audience is introduced to the Bennett family that includes five unwed daughters.
Since the daughters have no inheritable rights, they must be married before their father dies. Their
rural town does not have many suitors in it, before the rich Mr. Bingley rents a large country
home with his sister, and a good friend, Mr. Darcy. Seeing an opportunity, Mrs. Bennett makes
sure Mr. Bingley is introduced to her daughters. Love kindles between Mr. Bingley and the oldest
daughter, Jane, but misconception and class separates them. The second eldest, Elizabeth, and Mr.
Darcy let pride and prejudice stray their views of each other. These relationships go through many
trials such as class, pride, and prejudice. The

Artist s Statement Of DJ Culture
Artist s Statement The development of DJs has brought an array of entertainment, but also various
issues among DJ culture. In addition, I used various DJ techniques, such as beatmatching, to create
an hour long mix of R B tracks through Audacity. Although most of the songs were from the 90s
and 00s, there are cultural aspects in DJ culture that my mixtape relates to. By the early 1950s, the
creation of Rhythm and Blues first existed as black music for black people. Furthermore, with the
presence of R B, personality DJs began to emerge, such as DJ Jack Gibson and Alan Moondog
Freed. The 1900s was a time in which African Americans were oppressed and were still thought of
as inferior compared to whites. However, it was also during this time... Show more content on

One technique I used was beatmatching. After importing all the tracks I wanted to use into
Audacity and ordering them in a specific way, I decided which 2 tracks each I would mix.
Therefore, in order to beatmatch, I had to choose which parts of the tracks I wanted to
transition. Also, in order to transition from one track to another, I had to align the specific
basses. In other words, I had to align where the start of the beat in one track occurred to the last
beat of the other track. This is to allow both tracks to have the same beat, therefore beatmatching.
I also used fading in and out effects to smoothly transition. I used this technique for a majority of
the track. Another DJ technique I used was fast cutting. Because some songs had a faster bpm, I
used fast cutting to quickly transition into another track while also keeping the same beat. I
deleted certain parts of the songs to quickly change the song, but in a way so that the beat does
not change. Lastly, I downloaded a hip hop/R B sound effect and repeated it throughout the
mixtape so it wouldn t be as plain. I decided to make a mixtape containing only R B songs because,
in my perspective, it is a type of genre in which anybody can relate to and sing along to as well.
Therefore, just as other DJs have a purpose, my purpose is to allow the audience to sing along to
throwback R B tracks. This is to create

Did Charlie really win by his own fate or did Willy Wonka Play an even more prominent role than
many readers thoughts? To answer this question requires examining of the text, where some
suspicions arise regarding Wonka. Wonka possesses almost God like power and authority over his

Black Holes
Black Holes Albert Einstein first predicted black holes in 1916 with his general theory of
relativity. The term black hole was coined in 1967 by American astronomer John Wheeler, and
the first one was discovered in 1971. A black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so much
that even light can not get out. The gravity is so strong because matter has been squeezed into a
tiny space. This can happen when a staris dying. Because no light can get out, people can t see
black holes. They are invisible. Space telescopes with special tools can help find black holes. The
special tools can see how stars that are very close to black holes act differently than other stars.
Scientists think the smallest black holes formed when the universe... Show more content on

It s about four million times the mass of the Sun. It s surrounded by a cluster of young stars, some
of which plunge to within a few billion miles of the black hole. And although it s quiet today, a
century ago it gorged on a clump of matter that passed too close, creating a pyrotechnic display
that lit up the Milky Way s heart. Much of that evidence has been amassed by two teams, one led
by Ghez and another by Reinhard Genzel, director of the Max Planck Institute for
Extraterrestrial Physics in Germany. Using giant telescopes in Hawaii and Chile and cutting
edge observational techniques, they have probed closer to the black hole than ever before. That
has allowed them to plot the orbits of giant stars that pass hair raisingly close to the black hole,
providing the best measurement of the black hole s mass. And it has revealed that some of the
stars around the black hole are far younger than expected. There s been a myriad of surprises,
which is the fun of doing research, says Ghez. You go in expecting to answer one thing and you
come out the other end with more questions than you started with. The central question that Ghez,
Genzel, and others hoped to answer was whether a supermassive black hole inhabits the center of
the Milky Way. As early as 1980, radio observations revealed that gas was swirling around a dark,
massive object at the center of the galaxy. That object, which glowed steadily at radio

Part A: The case describes the activities of a hypothetical roadside assistance organisation that is
considering the relocation of its call centre from an existing base in the West Midlands of
England to a location in Mumbai in western India. Time Every activity of this project includes
the time about how long the activity will be taking place. For example, the business plan is
expected to take four working weeks, the presentation meeting is expected to be completed in one
day and so on. Therefore, time is one of the considerations which might be taken into account in
deciding this project. Cusworth and Franks (2007) said the actual progress has to match or beat

only the people were the country and farmer citizens feeling the sting of the political and industrial
changes during the Gilded Age. Middle class citizens were feeling the brunt of the ecominc and

Risk Management Within The Homeland Security Enterprise
Risk Management within the Homeland Security Enterprise Risk has been defined as the
likelihood of a specific outcome and the results or consequences of that specific outcome
(Masse, O Neil, Rollins, 2007). Risk is inherent to every facet of life. There are risks involved in
the mundane of driving down the road or walking on a sidewalk. Certain factors are added which
increases the risk of conducting these mundane tasks. For example, driving at a high rate of
speed during a rain storm exponentially increases the risk that one will lose control of the
vehicle and probably wreck. Assessing and managing risk is also a part of everyday life though
most people do not realize that they are actually using these tools to mitigate risks. In the previous
example, one would assess the risks of travelling at a high rate of speed during a rainstorm and
manage that risk by slowing down to a rate of speed that is commensorate with effects of the
rainstorm in order to avoid hydroplaning. Thus, the risks have been mitigated and the probability of
losing control of the vehicle is significantly decreased or eliminated. The principals of identifying
risks, assessing risks, and managing risks are used throughout the homeland security enterprise to
mitigate risks posed to the public, critical infrastructure, and ultimately national security. According
to the Department of Homeland Security s (DHS) (2010) Quadreannial Homeland Security Review
Report, homeland security is about

Theme Of Marriage By Gregory Corso Marriage
What causes people to contemplate marriage? Many would like to believe the answer is love,
but that is not always the case. People who think of an ideal marriage would think of two people
loving each other and sharing a personal bond or goals together. Marriage is usually defined as the
legally or formally recognized union of two lovers as partners in a personal relationship. This
suggests there is an actual connection between two people in marriage, but do people actually
consider this when committing to loveand support their partners forever? As research and studies
have shown, people ultimately get married for the incorrect reasons, in which love is not included
or even a part of. This philosophy can be easily applied to the short poem, Marriage by Gregory
Corso. In this emotional poem, the author argues marriage is more effectively understood or known
for culture and convenience rather than through the abstract considerations of love. Corso finds
himself confused multiple times, wondering if he should marry to not be lonely, for tradition and
for his physical and mental health. He disregards love, a relationship or a connection with his future
wife. The author ponders the decision weighing the options. He highlights which ones are the right
and which ones are the incorrect reasons, according to his opinion. General ways of convenience
like coping with loneliness, health and economic status, and navigating cultural stereotypes and
religion are often the true

Television, an escape to a more appealing reality than what we ourselves deal with daily. It is far
easier to live out one s dreams through a television screen than to create something for ourselves,
those in the television business know this well. From finding love in some cheesy romantic comedy
to indulging in shows for a good laugh, we are brainwashed into believing the messages conveyed
to fit the norm . Shows that are directly connected to American culture would be adult animated
comedies. Adult cartoons, such as: The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad!, King of the Hill,
and South Park, are being consumed by younger audiences; these shows contain stereotypes of sex,

Some shows, like South Park and The Simpsons, make us think logically about a situation we
might otherwise overlook, even if it is outlandish in context. Numerous sociological studies done
on people after watching The Simpsons had a positive effect. South Park watchers mentioned
wanting to get involved with controversial topics. Stereotypes depicted by these shows have a
negative impact; but occasionally, can help us to understand what is right and wrong. Sex,
ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender orientation, age, religion, etc. are all stereotypes projected in
these shows at one time or another. The Simpsons often makes the audience learn from the
character s mistakes with these stereotypes. The messages presented by these shows have an
unrealistic expectation for reality. Almost all the shows project a middle class, heterosexual
couple with their children, and characters of Caucasian race, apart from the Simpsons family who
are yellow. Most of the violent/inappropriate actions in the shows will go without consequences.
On many occasions, The Simpsons has exhibited child abuse through the actions of Homer
Simpson to his son, Bart (Pesce). Men are projected to be the main bread winner, while the wives
are meant to care for the

  • 4. Crimes And Crimes Of Children Crimes can be committed by everyone. The age of criminals have decreased as the crime committed increased in violence through time. Innocent lives are often lost in acts of violence, such as what had happened at Columbine. Children who commit malicious crimes can either be tried as a child or an adult. Children tried in the juvenile court systems are able to get out of jail around or before they turn 21. Juvenile courts are meant to rehabilitate children who are said to be too young to understand their actions. Adults who commit the same crimeas children are believed to be fully aware of their actions and the repercussions. If a child is tried as an adult, then the child can be given a longer sentence. Children who commit serious crimes should be tried as adults. With time, the severity of the crimes committed by children have been seen to be worse. Juvenile criminals, are still regarded by the law as children first criminals second (Collier 1). The juvenile court was originally created to help rehabilitate children who commit crimes such as stealing. Now the juvenile court can be seen harboring criminal who were well aware of the vicious acts he or she have done such as a murderer. Statistics show that, crimes committed by juveniles have increased by 60 percent since 1984 (Collier 1). The rapid increase of crimes that occur shows how the system in place is not effective in the prevention of crimes. Government statistics show that, Since 1965, the number of ... • 5. The National Science Foundation ( Nsf ) The National Science Foundation (NSF) leads a $280 million initiative enabling researchers to recreate the most destructive natural forces on Earth by shaking and rocking full sized structures. [1] In one experiment, Professor Tara Hutchinson tests steel beam resilience on the apparatus, on San Diego s outer limits. The earthquakemachine utilizes strain gauges and accelerometers numbering in the hundreds to record the many forces that artificially induced seismic activity places on the structure. New building codes and retrofitting practices have emerged due to the successes achieved at the NSF research site. As a result, $65 million will go toward similar research equipment facilities over the next five years. As for Hutchinson s experiment, she discovered structural weaknesses during pretest trials that exerted little force on the test subject. The implication was that small earthquakes might weaken buildings before large events occur without leaving external clues. Learning From the Past Researchers, such as Professor Hutchinson, establish new safety standards and construction practices using empirical evidence. [2] Early natural hazard mitigation projects included massive, expensive and untested hazard deterrents, such as levees and floodgates. After a natural disaster in the 1960 s, engineers discovered that the structures damaged the natural, protective landscape and offered insufficient hazard protection. Resultantly, engineers develop mitigation plans ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Radical Feminism And Civil Rights Movement During 1967-1975 Radical feminism was birthed as a solution to patriarchy what women viewed as the sole reason of their oppression during the Women s and Civil Rights Movement during 1967 1975. These feminists believe that the world is governed through a patriarchal system where men control the government, media, and the state, among other things. Thus, radical feminists deemed that the presence of men resulted in their oppression. The goal for radical feminists is to completely separate men from all aspects of life in order to heal, eradicate oppression, and develop in social standing. • 7. The Ethics Of File Sharing CMSC 350 second paper Michael Montgomery The Ethics of File Sharing File sharing is the act of someone making a copy of a file and sending it to another person. The method of sharing includes Internet peer to peer transfers, but also includes physical CD copies, emails, and mobile storage devices. Companies are justified in focusing on physical CD sales and online peer to peer file sharing, as their sales have potential to cause harm. Loss of sales is indeed what is happening. Consumers need to be more aware of the risks of file sharing. File sharing increases risks of viruses or loss of personal info. In Taiwan 1997, music sales hit 12 billion in their country specific currency. That statistic dropped to 2 billion at 2012 due to the increasing amount of internet usage. (3) On further study via surveying usage, riskiness, and preferences of media, people told an activity is likely to get caught doing and has a large fine is 7% likely to continue performing. This statistic is vs 75% likely to continue performing illegal acts if low risk of getting caught and low fines. (3) Using this information, increasing estimated risk and increasing actual fines will have a great reduction in piracy (3). To do that, high schools and colleges need to push the possibilities of getting caught and the severity of penalties. Education on the risks of file sharing for consumers can lead to reduction of piracy, and increased safety for users as well. File sharing doesn t just affect big companies. Single artists and small bands have always strived to get their work out and hopefully also for sales to continue making work. If consumers knew how businesses worked and the years of time it takes for a product to become available, then they d be less likely to steal via pirating. • 10. Essay on Karl Marx s Estranged Labor Karl Marx s Estranged Labor In Karl Marx s early writing on estranged labor there is a clear and prevailing focus on the plight of the laborer. Marx s writing on estranged labor is an attempt to draw a stark distinction between property owners and workers. In the writing Marx argues that the worker becomes estranged from his labor because he is not the recipient of the product he creates. As a result labor is objectified, that is labor becomes the object of mans existence. As labor is objectified man becomes disillusioned and enslaved. Marx argues that man becomes to be viewed as a commodity worth only the labor he creates and man is further reduced to a subsisting animal void of any capacity of freedom except the will to labor. For... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He argues that this situation is analogous to a man and his religion. Marx writes, The more man puts into God the less he retains in himself....The worker puts his life into the object, but now his life no longer belongs to him but to the object. The result of the worker belonging to the object is that he is enslaved. The worker belongs to something else and his actions are dictated by that thing. For Marx, labor turns man into a means. Workers become nothing more than the capital necessary to produce a product. Labor for Marx reduces man to a means of production. As a means of production man is diminished to a subsisting enslaved creature void of his true nature. In this condition he is reduced to the most detrimental state of man: one in which he is estranged from himself. To help expand on this theme it is useful to look at Marx s allegory of man s life activity. Of the variety of reasons Marx argues man is estranged from his labor, probably the most significant is his belief that labor estranges man from himself. Marx argues that the labor the worker produces does not belong to the worker so in essence the worker does not belong to the worker. By virtue of this condition Marx argues the worker is enslaved. Enslavement for Marx is a condition alien to man and he becomes estranged from himself. For Marx, man estranged from himself is stripped of his very nature. Not only because ... • 11. Native American Beliefs In Native America And Sir Walter... Long before the first Europeans arrived Native Americans, had their own religions, lifestyles, and customs. While these cultures were similar in some ways to the civilized nations, they were also very different. Upon arrival in the New World some people, such as Thomas Hariot, set out to document these new peoples, and their ways of life and, as was important in those days, their religion. By informing people in England of the New World, more settlers would be likely to come. If possible travelers are informed of their destination, there will be less apprehension about going. Thomas Hariot was one such informer. An Englishman who accompanied Sir Walter Raleigh on his voyage to establish a colony in the New World, he kept accounts of his explorations and later had them published in his A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia. His book described the land and people of Virginia as he traveled the country. One of the tribes he wrote about and described was known as the Algonquin. Hariot described the people of the tribe as being [C]lothed in loose mantles made of Deere skins and aprons of the same rounde about their middle; all els[e] naked... allowing his English readers to realize the Algonquin were slightly unprogressive compared to themselves in terms of clothing. Yet the author does not seem to look down upon the natives for their rather primitive way of dressing. Mr. Hariot went on to describe their lack of advanced tools and weapons: those ... • 13. Frederick Douglass s Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick... In the early 19th century, slavery was legal and popular in the southern states, among these slaves, one slave in particular impacted the 19th century was Frederick Douglass. Although he was a slave for most of his life, Douglass eventually became a freeman, a social reform, writer, and an abolitionist for slavery. However, before he became a freeman, Douglass experienced a brutal life as a slave. He faced dehumanization in his early life, but accomplished what most slaves we not allowed to do; which is getting educated, by self educating himself and retaliating against the idea of slavery. Furthermore, since he self educated himself, he was able to published the narrative, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas; which, Douglass shows the audience how methods such as, physical abuse, psychological abuse, and lack of education were used to dehumanize slaves. He describes how he resisted these methods and realized that whites who participated in slavery themselves were being dehumanized. One of the most known and infamous way of dehumanizing slaves, was by abusing them. The most common abuse was whipping them; however, there were others ways of punishing them, such as, the lack of food, water, clothing and making them work long hours from the sunrise to sun down. Some slaveholders would only whip their slave if they disobeyed them, though others did it to make them live in fear and most for the satisfaction of it or to make fun of the slaves. Freud argued that the mind composed of three aspects, namely the id, ego, and superego, which interacts to create complex human behavior. The three aspects are not physical entities within the brain, but a concept of fundamental mental functions. Before the structural model, Freud (1990) developed the topographical model of the mind which is an important aspect of id, ego, and superego. Freud uses the term conscious, preconscious and unconscious to explain the different surface configuration of the brain. The conscious is what the mind is currently aware of, whereas, preconscious is the memories that can easily be brought to awareness. The unconscious is a region that is inaccessible to the conscious memory, which Freud saw it as the source of desires where many problems arise. • 15. The Value Of A Country s Currency In the world, every country has its own level of production and consumption of goods and services called the economy. The economic activities allow each country to have its currency valued against other currencies and this is called exchange rate. When you borrow money, there is a charge that you pay in return on top of the borrowed amount called interest. Interest is usually calculated as per annum and it influences exchange rates. The value of a country s currency is affected by a cocktail of activities such as political stability, productivity, inflation and many other things. Holding all other things constant, if a country s interest rate change, this will affect its exchange rates, for example if the interest rates of the United States dollar (US$) rises more than the British Pound, the US$ will become more powerful compared to the British pound. In theory, if interest rates of a country increase, the money of that country will become more valuable, but as I said above, many other things also influence the exchange rates meaning that interest rate alone will not be good enough to determine the exchange rate of a currency. The demand for goods produced by a country has a major impact too on the performance of the country s currency. Counties whose goods are on high demand on an international market can increase their interest rate too to make their currency hold high value. The more valuable a currency is, the more it becomes on demand internationally. Because USA has a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Therefore, some people want to be fit into the category of normal. They start doing what the majority does and they try to maintain their emotions in a certain level. They think they are normal, but they are not. They somehow misunderstand the true meaning of what is normal. What is normal should not be determined by the majority, and it is not depend on people s moods... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Today, social medias give tremendous impacts to everyone. What people usually see on the TV, internet, or surrounding would influence their concepts of normality. For example, a person who is still using an old fashioned cell phone might be considered as abnormal, because the majority of people is using the latest smartphones. It is important for people to know they are normal or not, because most of the people are feeling happy that they are normal. However, the definition of being normal has indirectly manipulated by the majority. As long as people follow what the majority does, they are parts of the majority and will not be abnormal at all. However, that is not the meaning of normal but merely a part of the definition of norms, following what most of the people do. If the normality is determined by the majority, same sex marriage will never be accepted by the society. This is a very good evidence that shows what is normal is not determined by the majority. In What Do We Mean by Normal ? , Maisel also tells us that normal is not what people perceive all the time or what people perceive the most of. He clearly states that normal means anything of value to right thinking people (Maisel 1). In other words, what is normal is not depending on what the majority does. The Time Succeeding Herbert Hoover s Presidency Evelyn Serrano Mrs. Mohan IB History of the Americas Period 10 13 December 2014 Essay Topic 2 Question A The time succeeding Herbert Hoover s presidency became a period of reconstruction. The Great Depression caused thorough damage through the entire nation. Citizen s trust stood nonexistent and their motives were vacant. Franklin Roosevelt came into office with upfront critical responsibilities. In order to save what was left of the United States, Roosevelt had to approach the detrimental economy with an open mind. He came up with many solutions, some received questionable appraisal from the people such as the New Deal. The New Deal served as an attempt to uplift the economy by assisting banks, creating jobs, and financing businesses. In Roosevelt s mind, government affiliation was vital. The policies sparked controversy among business owners as they argued it was unconstitutional and put capitalism at stake. The New Deal proves effective in saving capitalism by initiating a strong federal government to regulate the economy. After the collapse of the economy in 1929, banks were in crucial conditions. Citizen s trust faltered as Hoover preached to them empty promises about how things would get better. Franklin Roosevelt s mission with the New Deal was to recuperate all that was lost during Hoover s presidency. Within the New Deal was passed the Federal Emergency Banking Act. Some of these themes include views on science, changes in the weather across Europe, mistrust of advancements in science and the role of disease and death and the loneliness that resulted. The experiences of Shelly and even the setting and location where she formed the idea for Frankenstein display interesting themes of the time period. Disease and death were a common theme throughout the Romantic era. Not only did it affect Shelly s life directly, the topic of personal loss was evident throughout her novel. The murders of Victor s family and friends by the monster displayed this theme but it was also on display early in the book with Victor s mother catching the Scarlet Fever and dying after attending to Elizabeth during a bout of the same. Disease, tragedy and death seemed to be a sad but very common part of life during this time period. Interestingly, changes in the climate and weather of Europe were a key factor in the idea of Frankenstein coming about. Due to this inclement weather, a period of time was spent indoors by Mary, her husband and some of her friends. Typically most Americans will start to see their weight increase into adulthood and rapidly increase after age 40 (Roberts, 2005). Numerous diet plans offer different suggestions on how best to address a person s food intake lose weight. One such method is to use the Glycemic Index as a guide to making healthier food choices. I present an executive summary of my findings based the Glycemic Index and its moderate evidence of implications in the management obesity in metabolically healthy adults. As food is consumed and passes through the gastrointestinal tract the body releases specific enzymes, peptides, and hormones to breakdown the food (chyme), absorb the nutrients, and get the nutrients to tissues which need them. This process occurs quickly, within 30 minutes of the chyme entering the small intestines. One hormone of particular interest is insulin, which regulates the body s blood glucose levels. When blood glucose levels are high, after consuming a meal, the pancreas will release insulin from its beta cells. Insulin inhibits gluconeogenesis of the liver and stores glucose as energy reserves within tissues: muscle, cardiac, liver, and adipose. The coordination of the body s organs and hormones to release hormones and move glucose out of the blood are critical to preventing hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia, both of which can be deadly (Gropper, 2013). This attitude of self reliance is a distinguishing characteristic of both Lord Byron and his literary figures (Parker, 88). She Walks in Beauty starts off from a traditional picture of a lady as fair and bright. It links with the brightness of daylight, in its comparison of the mistress to the night. The distinctive quality of the poem derives not from any departure from the norm but from a graceful elaboration of the conventions of compliment (Seifter, 82). Avoiding unoriginal or obvious similies, Byron uses metaphors which expresses the idea of a quiet and slight glow. The mistress like the night/ Of cloudless climes and starry skies (ll 1 2), not pitch dark but glimmering with a diffused light (Seifter, 82). She is like a portrait in chiaroscuro , her face is copied through an interaction of light and shadow. Bhakta 3 Her hazy beauty makes daylight seem bright. Imagery drawn from painting continues as a poet discusses the shades, rays, and tints that compose the mistress s particular radiance (Seifter, 82). The flowing lines, rhymes, and imagery of light and dark give the impression of elegant and simple compliment. The poem starts off brilliantly. The first four lines are beautifully phrased, and the opening couplet in particular has ingrained itself in the collective consciousness (Blair, 1). According to Emrick, Lassen, and Edwards (1977), the treatment options that are available for individuals addicted to cocaine or amphetamines would consist of peer self help groups (Drug use and abuse, 2011, p. 372). It was stated by Regier et al., (1993) that a national survey showed over 1.5 million individuals in the United States using self help groups to overcome their drug abuse (Drug use and abuse, 2011, p. 373). In the self help group, the individual must first be ready or motivated to make the changes before attempting to join. There are also professional drug rehabilitation facilities, but not all individuals are able to afford to attend those costly facilities. In conclusion, the different forms of cocaine and different types of amphetamines are all considered addictive and dangerous to our society. Even though, there are medicinal uses for cocaine and amphetamines, there are side effects that can make life for the individuals ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The first set of lyrics in the song are, I still taste your presence, Once sweet but it turned sour, Tried to shake your indifference, But it s too late now (00:00:15 00:00:28). This set of lyrics show metaphorically that Gabbie still feels the persons presence anywhere she goes that once was creating and holding good memories but now when she goes there she doesn t feel that way. In most of the music video, it reveals the flashbacks of these memories that were created with the use of pictures. This could also be portrayed with mental illness, the places that once held a good memory is now replaced with the mental illness related memories and what happened when the mental illnesses were affecting her. In the style of the music video and the first set of lyrics, Gabbie displays that she is using pathos and ethos. • 41. Summary Of John Searle s Argument John Searle first proposed the argument known as The Chinese Room Argument in a book he wrote in 1984. The argument is well known if not famous and has become one of the best know arguments in recent philosophy. Searle imagines himself locked in a room following a computer program for responding to questions written in Chinese characters slipped under the door. Searle does not understand Chinese writing, but he can follow the computer program to manipulate symbols and numerals to easily respond to the questions without fully understanding even what he was being asked or responding. Therefor, the Chinese Room would be functionally equivalent but not cognitively equivalent to the native Chinese speakers and furthermore, if the Chinese Room can imitate understanding without truly having it, then both Strong AI and Functionalism would have to be invalid. Functionalism s imperative is to show that functional equivalence must always equal cognitive equivalence, so if one could show functional equivalence did not equal cognitive equivalence then Functionalism would be invalid. Additionally, if a computer or some other system could imitate intelligence without retaining understanding, then strong AI would be invalid as well. Strong AI is the view that if a machine can successfully imitate human intelligence in a way that it becomes functionally and cognitively equivalent to a mind, then the computer itself is a mind. Strong AI and its advocates respond to Searle s claims by applying the Systems Reply. • 43. Separation Between Classes In Pride And Prejudice And My... Movie Text Analysis: Class Separation between classes has been evident ever since societies have been begun. At some points in history, the differences in the classes were more noticeable than other times. The movies, Pride and Prejudice and My Fair Lady, represent different classes, and how they interact with each other. Even though the movies are set in different time periods, the interactions between the classes are very similar. Although both movies show the differences of the society classes, My Fair Lady shows the differences of the classes in a more obvious manner than Pride and Prejudice which tends to show the differences in a more subdued manner. In Joe Wright s 2005 Pride and Prejudice, the setting is around the beginning of the 1800 s in rural England. The audience is introduced to the Bennett family that includes five unwed daughters. Since the daughters have no inheritable rights, they must be married before their father dies. In addition, I used various DJ techniques, such as beatmatching, to create an hour long mix of R B tracks through Audacity. Although most of the songs were from the 90s and 00s, there are cultural aspects in DJ culture that my mixtape relates to. By the early 1950s, the creation of Rhythm and Blues first existed as black music for black people. Furthermore, with the presence of R B, personality DJs began to emerge, such as DJ Jack Gibson and Alan Moondog Freed. The 1900s was a time in which African Americans were oppressed and were still thought of as inferior compared to whites. However, it was also during this time... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One technique I used was beatmatching. After importing all the tracks I wanted to use into Audacity and ordering them in a specific way, I decided which 2 tracks each I would mix. Therefore, in order to beatmatch, I had to choose which parts of the tracks I wanted to transition. Also, in order to transition from one track to another, I had to align the specific basses. In other words, I had to align where the start of the beat in one track occurred to the last beat of the other track. This is to allow both tracks to have the same beat, therefore beatmatching. I also used fading in and out effects to smoothly transition. I used this technique for a majority of the track. Another DJ technique I used was fast cutting. Because some songs had a faster bpm, I used fast cutting to quickly transition into another track while also keeping the same beat. I deleted certain parts of the songs to quickly change the song, but in a way so that the beat does not change. Lastly, I downloaded a hip hop/R B sound effect and repeated it throughout the mixtape so it wouldn t be as plain. I decided to make a mixtape containing only R B songs because, in my perspective, it is a type of genre in which anybody can relate to and sing along to as well. Therefore, just as other DJs have a purpose, my purpose is to allow the audience to sing along to throwback R B tracks. This is to create ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 46. Black Holes Black Holes Albert Einstein first predicted black holes in 1916 with his general theory of relativity. The term black hole was coined in 1967 by American astronomer John Wheeler, and the first one was discovered in 1971. A black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light can not get out. The gravity is so strong because matter has been squeezed into a tiny space. This can happen when a staris dying. Because no light can get out, people can t see black holes. They are invisible. Space telescopes with special tools can help find black holes. The special tools can see how stars that are very close to black holes act differently than other stars. Scientists think the smallest black holes formed when the universe... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It s about four million times the mass of the Sun. And although it s quiet today, a century ago it gorged on a clump of matter that passed too close, creating a pyrotechnic display that lit up the Milky Way s heart. Much of that evidence has been amassed by two teams, one led by Ghez and another by Reinhard Genzel, director of the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Germany. Using giant telescopes in Hawaii and Chile and cutting edge observational techniques, they have probed closer to the black hole than ever before. That has allowed them to plot the orbits of giant stars that pass hair raisingly close to the black hole, providing the best measurement of the black hole s mass. And it has revealed that some of the stars around the black hole are far younger than expected. There s been a myriad of surprises, which is the fun of doing research, says Ghez. You go in expecting to answer one thing and you come out the other end with more questions than you started with. The central question that Ghez, Genzel, and others hoped to answer was whether a supermassive black hole inhabits the center of the Milky Way. As early as 1980, radio observations revealed that gas was swirling around a dark, massive object at the center of the galaxy. That object, which glowed steadily at radio ... • 49. Risk Management Within The Homeland Security Enterprise Risk Management within the Homeland Security Enterprise Risk has been defined as the likelihood of a specific outcome and the results or consequences of that specific outcome (Masse, O Neil, Rollins, 2007). Risk is inherent to every facet of life. There are risks involved in the mundane of driving down the road or walking on a sidewalk. Certain factors are added which increases the risk of conducting these mundane tasks. For example, driving at a high rate of speed during a rain storm exponentially increases the risk that one will lose control of the vehicle and probably wreck. Assessing and managing risk is also a part of everyday life though most people do not realize that they are actually using these tools to mitigate risks. In the previous example, one would assess the risks of travelling at a high rate of speed during a rainstorm and manage that risk by slowing down to a rate of speed that is commensorate with effects of the rainstorm in order to avoid hydroplaning. Thus, the risks have been mitigated and the probability of losing control of the vehicle is significantly decreased or eliminated. The principals of identifying risks, assessing risks, and managing risks are used throughout the homeland security enterprise to mitigate risks posed to the public, critical infrastructure, and ultimately national security. According to the Department of Homeland Security s (DHS) (2010) Quadreannial Homeland Security Review Report, homeland security is about ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 51. Theme Of Marriage By Gregory Corso Marriage What causes people to contemplate marriage? Many would like to believe the answer is love, but that is not always the case. People who think of an ideal marriage would think of two people loving each other and sharing a personal bond or goals together. Marriage is usually defined as the legally or formally recognized union of two lovers as partners in a personal relationship. This suggests there is an actual connection between two people in marriage, but do people actually consider this when committing to loveand support their partners forever? As research and studies have shown, people ultimately get married for the incorrect reasons, in which love is not included or even a part of. This philosophy can be easily applied to the short poem, Marriage by Gregory Corso. In this emotional poem, the author argues marriage is more effectively understood or known for culture and convenience rather than through the abstract considerations of love. Corso finds himself confused multiple times, wondering if he should marry to not be lonely, for tradition and for his physical and mental health. He disregards love, a relationship or a connection with his future wife. The author ponders the decision weighing the options. He highlights which ones are the right and which ones are the incorrect reasons, according to his opinion.
