Environmental sustainability is the responsibility is one of our responsibility to conserve natural resources and protect our ecosystem to help and support our health for now and for future.. when nature is left alone, it has tremendous ability to care for itself. But human actions can deplete natural resources and without the application of environmental sustainability methods, long term viability can be compromised.
2. GHORAMARA – THE SINKING ISLAND
This island in Sunderban delta complex, Kolkata is
disappearing. Two third of the land is lost to the sea
due to cyclone, coastal flooding and erosion.
3. HAWAIIAN CORAL REEF (CORAL
BLEACHING)
May 2016, images of coral bleaching and death at
Lizard island on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Nearly
half of the Hawaii’s coral reefs were bleached during
the heat waves in 2015 and 2016.
4. EFFECT OF ACID RAIN
Acid rain is way more harmful than it looks. The biggest
visible example of acid rain is Taj Mahal. The acid rain
reacted with the marble (calcium carbonate) and
caused damage to this wonderful structure.
6. AIR POLLUTION BY INDUTRIAL EMISSION
AND VEHICLES
Due to these human activities, different waste particles
are introduced to the natural environment and
atmosphere, thus causing harmful effect to all living
organism or ecosystems.
7. GLOBAL WARMING
It is the observed rise in the average temperature of
the Earth’s climate system and its related effects. The
reason of global warming is explained below.
8. What is Environment

9. SUSTAINABILITY
Now let us see what sustainability exactly means.
Sustainability is the ability to continue a defined
behavior indefinitely.
Sustainability is the process of maintaining change in a
balanced fashion, in which the exploitation of
resources , the direction of investments, the
orientation of technological development and
institutional change are all in harmony and enhance
both current and future potential meet human needs
and aspirations. Three main pillars of sustainability
: economic, environmental, and social.
10. Environmental Sustainability
• Environmental sustainability is the responsibility to conserve
natural resources and protect global ecosystems to support
health and wellbeing, now and in the future. Its benefits are
• Protecting ecosystems
• continuing enjoying nature as it is
• protecting endangered species
• Less pollution protects better respiratory health
• It could reverse the effects of global warming
• Creating huge landfills all over the world that will take hundreds of
years to break down
• Saving energy and money
• Less waste production and less pollution
• Attracting and keeping better quality investors, employees, and
shareholders
• As a whole not damaging the planet for future generations
11. Recycling helps the
environment by
• Reducing Landfill
• Reduce Energy
Consumption
• Decrease Pollution
• Cost
What is Sustainable Development ?
12. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
It is the development that meets the needs of the
present without compromising the ability of the
future generations to meet their own needs.
14. Green Space
• Urban green space is open-space areas reserved for
parks and other "green spaces", including plant life,
water features -also referred to as blue spaces- and
other kinds of natural environment. Most urban open
spaces are green spaces, but occasionally include other
kinds of open areas.
• It encourages exercise, provides spaces for socializing,
decreases noise and air pollution, and improves
immune function by providing exposure to beneficial
microbiota. It also can help with psychological
restoration; that is, green space provides a respite for
over-stimulated minds.
15. How to achieve environmental
sustainability?
• Cut down on red meat to reduce methane emissions
• Switch to green energy like wind, solar power, and
geothermal energy as are all infinite sources and will
not deplete.
• Cooking and baking your own meals and snacks, to
avoid non-recyclable packaging.
• Ditch the bottled water and drink from the tap as
plastic bottles take about 450 years to decompose or
use a reusable water bottle or a water filter jug for
your refrigerator.
• Rely less on car and walk or cycle where possible.
16. • Use more energy-efficient light bulbs.
• Eat locally- this supports food products with low air
miles. In other words, try to eat foods that haven’t
traveled far to make it onto your plate.
• Resell, repurpose, or donate unwanted items.
Repurposing may mean using old clothes or bed sheets
for cleaning rags or reusing glass jars to store dry foods.
• If you wear make-up, switch to washable, reusable
make-up wipes, and plastic-free cosmetics.
• Reduce consumption of single-use plastic materials
like water bottles, grocery bags, coffee cups, and
produce wrapping. These can replace these single-use
items with plastic straw tote bags, water flasks,
reusable coffee cups, and plastic-free fruit and
vegetables.
• Switch out paper towels for reusable dishcloths.
17. Sustainable UN Facility
• UNEP hosts the Sustainable United Nations (SUN) facility, located in
the Economy Division in Geneva. Established in 2008, SUN manages
and supports the Issues Management Group (IMG) on
Environmental Sustainability Management, which is a network of
‘Sustainability focal points.’ The focal points are designated by the
UN entities’ member of the Environment Management Group. SUN
also leads the UN system’s efforts to measure and reduce its
environmental impacts.
• SUN’s work goes on behind the scenes – securing a mandate;
ensuring environmental considerations are factored into key UN
initiatives; and, providing templates, frameworks, technical support
and advice to the IMG - there is also a UN-wide campaign to engage
staff at all levels of the organization, detailing what’s happening to
green the UN and how they can get involved. This campaign
is Greening the Blue.
