The Pixel Lab 2011-Michel Reilhac: The End of the Beginning?power to the pixel
The document discusses cycles in new media and what is ending and beginning in terms of transmedia storytelling. It notes that the first cycle involves exploration, the second sees pioneers make it real, and the third is when producers make money. What is ending includes early genres, stereotypes, transmedia as just a marketing gimmick, and social media innocence. What is beginning includes externalization of human abilities and fear/love of in-real-life experiences. It also lists skills needed for transmedia storytelling like standing out, pushing boundaries, engaging audiences, and eventually monetizing projects.

The document summarizes highlights from various humane education summer camp programs run by members of the Association of Professional Humane Educators (APHE). It describes activities that campers enjoyed, including connecting with an author via Skype, arts and crafts projects focused on shelter animals, hands-on veterinary activities, gardening to grow vegetables for shelter animals, outdoor activities with shelter dogs like kayaking and geocaching, and creating an e-book to document camp experiences. The purpose is to share successful program ideas that other APHE members can adopt for their own camps.

IBM uses boxes as a metaphor for traditional work structures and getting employees "out of the box" through informal learning and social networking. IBM encourages its nearly 400,000 employees to interact and collaborate outside of traditional structures using internal social media platforms like blogs, wikis, forums and virtual worlds. These platforms have led to increased knowledge sharing and community building across the company.

USER CENTERED DESIGN: AN APPROACH FOR DESIGNING FOR ENGAGEMENT
Paul Tyler – KEA, Copenhagen School of Design & Technology
What happens when you step back from the development process to see what it is you’re designing?
Where does audience insight come from and how do we use it? When designing for engagement we
must understand what motivates children and use it to guide the design process.
The document discusses different theories of narrative structure in film. It first defines narrative as storytelling constructed through elements like characters, actions, and settings. It then outlines Tzdorov's 5-step structure of equilibrium, disruption, recognition, attempt to repair, and new equilibrium. Next, it describes Levi-Strauss' theory that narratives express cultural myths through binary positions like hero vs. villain. Finally, it discusses Vladimir Propp's idea that there are conventional character types like heroes, villains, donors, and princesses in narratives.
This document summarizes an article from the International Journal of Management that discusses the importance of information and communication technology (ICT) in improving the quality of education, especially in rural areas of developing countries like India. It outlines how ICT can increase access to education, improve teaching quality, and help create knowledgeable and skilled citizens. The document also discusses the current state of ICT in Indian education, the role of education in developing a knowledge-based society and economy, and how ICT can help make education systems more efficient.

The document discusses using Protocol Buffers at Twitter to store tweets in a way that is robust, efficient, amenable to large-scale analysis, and reusable. Protocol Buffers were chosen because they allow for splitting, efficient parsing, adding new fields, ignoring unused fields, small data size, and hierarchical structure - all important requirements for storing Twitter's large volume of tweet data.
Yahoo plans to backport features from Hadoop trunk to their 0.20 branch to support their needs, which has been deployed on all 25,000 of their nodes. They are working on adding security features to 0.20 by August to meet their requirements, as moving to 0.21 would introduce incompatibilities. Yahoo will likely skip 0.21 and move directly to 0.22, and they question if there is enough external interest to release 0.21.
- Yahoo needed to secure its Hadoop clusters to isolate data between different users and prevent unauthorized access, as it had hundreds of users sharing over 20 clusters with sensitive financial and personal data.
- The solution introduced Kerberos authentication to Hadoop to provide distributed authentication across HDFS clients and MapReduce jobs. Authorization controls were also added through access control lists.
- The changes were made largely transparent to users through single sign-on with Kerberos and required only minimal API changes, while maintaining backwards compatibility. Security features were added on schedule and preparation was underway to deploy them broadly across Yahoo's production clusters.
