2. Running with Scissors Review Essay
Kevin Cole October 23, 2011 Period 5 AP Psychology Book Review Running With Scissors: A
Memoir Hello, as you probably know each quarter I am required to read a book for the course AP
Psychology. For this quarter, I chose the book Running With Scissors by Augusten Burroughs. The
publisher of the book is St. Martin s Press in the United States and it was published in the year of
2002. The author of the book is also the subject of the book due to it being a memoir. He is qualified
to write this book because he is writing about himself and his own life. He may be biased due to the
fact that he is writing about himself. He may try to exaggerate details of his life that he deems positive
and he may also try to downplay or even remove the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Finch. Dr. Finch seems to be a rather normal physiatrist when he is first introduced, but this image is
quickly removed and replaced with a much more accurate vision of him that will be explained in
greater detail throughout this review. Eventually Augusten s parents divorce and entire life begins to
take a completely different path. His mother begins to second guess her sexuality and sends Augusten
to live with the Finch family so that she may set her life to the way that she wishes it to be. Augusten
is introduced to an entirely new way of living life. Dr. Finch believes that at age 13 a person is an
adult and cannot be told what to do anymore. As a result, there are many odd occurrences in the Finch
household, such as Augusten and the youngest Finch daughter, Natalie removing the roof of the
kitchen to build a skylight. Augusten s mother Deidre does not seem to be helpful at all when it comes
to helping her son through his rather unorthodox childhood. She is rather self absorbed and is mentally
unstable, which is not a good combination to rearing a child successfully. She also has to grapple with
her own hectic life, which includes such things as having an affair with a local minister s wife, or
having a yearly breakdown every spring. One of the major points of the story including Augusten s
mother is hear relationship with Dorothy. Dorothy is a wealthy African American woman who

These enthusiastic journeys were shaping my personality to learn more about different cultures. I was
fortunate to take a holiday in Europe between my sophomore and junior year of high school. More
importantly the trip began and ended with a stop in New York. Once there I could see firsthand, from
the Bowery to Harlem, all the different cultures I had only read about. I was delighted to take my first

Effective transport systems in multicellular plants and animals, although with apparent differences,
have similarities as they all possess a system of vessels in which substances are transported, a driving
mechanism to ensure that substances move in the correct direction and importantly, a suitable
transport medium.
What is transport medium and which chemicals are carried around your body? (Make sure you are
talking about main ones and their form)
Blood is the fluid transport that flows through the heart and blood vessel of the cardiovascular system
in vertebrates. Blood distributes heat around the body, as well as the nutrients and gases required by
the body and the wastes to be excreted from the body. It also carries other chemicals such as
hormones, glucose, and oxygen for aerobic respiration, antibodies to fight infections, clotting factors
and many other substances required by the body to function efficiently.

These two systems both possess the heart as the core mechanism, a fluid that transports substances and
a system of vessels. The function of the transport system in animals is to deliver nutrients and gases to
the cell and to collect and remove wastes. With the movement of the blood around the body, the
composition of blood cells and plasma remain relatively the same but the concentration of dissolved
substances and gases change depending on the organ it s passing through. There are a number of
notable differences, but the most important is that a closed circulatory system has the transport fluid
surrounded within the system of vessels at all times. However, in an open circulatory system, the
transport fluid leaves the vessels, enters cavities in the body and come in direct contact with the
organs. Overall, open circulatory systems are not as efficient as closed stems because the fluid
pressure is low, causing the transport fluid to circulate

14. Medieval And Medieval Architecture
When regarding ancient and medieval architecture, the powerful influence of religion is very
imminent throughout the various time periods and different styles of architecture. History of
architecture is associated more with buildings driven by religion than with any other category, because
in most past civilizations, the consistent and distinguished appeal of religion made the church or
temple the most symbolic, the most stable, and the most powerful building in any city. Throughout
human history, religion has been the inspiration for magnificent works of philosophy, literature, art,
and architecture. Throughout history in ancient Europe, sacred traditions were symbolized, expressed
and preserved in places of worship and pilgrimage. Though there are many examples that support this
argument, the mortuary complex of King Zoser in ancient Egypt, the Parthenon of ancient Greece, the
Pantheon of Italy, the Hagia Sophia of the Byzantine Empire, and the Notre Dame Cathedral of Paris
reign supreme in exemplifying the architectural practice driven by the influence of religion.
In Ancient Egypt, pyramids were monumental tombs built for the kings, but more importantly, the
great pyramids were also fundamental to the religious beliefs of Egyptian culture and society. In the
ancient Egyptian culture, death of the king was not a termination of life but rather, on the contrary, the
potential of beginning of a new form of existence. The kings held an exclusive position, described

Americans viewed Irish as alcoholics due to the drinking that is weaved into their culture and ways of
living. Much like our culture does today, Irish drank in several difference social settings, although they
did drink alcohol at someone s wake before the funeral, which may have been what disgusted
Americans the most. Americans saw alcohol has ruling over the Irish and they were merely the slaves.
One should also note, this was during the time of the ban of alcohol in the United States, so to see one
consuming alcohol at such high rates was highly alarming and it would not be long for one to create a
bad reputation because of something so simple. Due to this, Americans also stereotyped the Irish to be
unskilled and lazy, at times signs were even put into windows stating things such as, Irish need not
apply. At this point in history, Irish were viewed much similarly to African Americans when it came to
respect.
Over time, the Irish were able to keep their customs without encountering further confrontation, and
the United States was able to run as one country under many different religions and customs as it does
today. Catholics were able to run for office and Catholicism soon became one of the United States top
most common religions.
The Irish were looked down upon by Americans for three main reasons; they were stereotyped to be
violent, drunk, and had different religious views which were frowned upon by the Americans. The

19. Genetic Engineering Negative Essay
After genes were discovered, scientists have been trying to disclose the mysteries of them. Since genes
are the basic building blocks of organism, they are extremely crucial to the development of biological
science. Genetic engineering seems to help the scientists explore the genomes. Genetic engineering is
a relatively new technology that is used to manipulate the genome of an organism. It can be utilized to
raise plants, cure diseases, create genetically modified babies, and clone living organisms. In other
words, scientists can use genomes as Lego blocks to build or change an organism. When an innovative
idea is introduced to people, two groups manifest: one that supports the idea and one that opposes it.
Recently, as the products of the technology, such as GMO food, get increasingly more involved in
human lives, people start to debate whether genetically engineering is more beneficial or harmful. On
the surface of the issue, genetic engineering seems to only serve benefits. However, while the
development of genetic engineering can change our world for the better, it has various negative
influences on the human race in many aspects: it is harmful toward the agricultural environment; it
acts against nature; and it creates ethical problems. Scientists must consider the disadvantages of the
technology carefully, before they over develop it to an extent that it creates irreversible harms which
can impair the entire human race.

23. Revenge and Hatred in Sylvia Plath s Daddy Essay
Revenge and Hatred in Plath s Daddy
The power of Plath s Daddy to threaten, shock and move the reader remains undiminished, years after
it was written. To the unsuspecting reader, the experience of first reading Daddy is a confusion of
discomfort, excitement and guilty pleasure, for the pleasures of revenge are said to be sweet, and this
is a revenge poem of the first rank. Revenge upon whom? Father? Perhaps, more likely, upon her
husband. And her aim was true, for if anything Plath wrote damaged Ted Hughes for posterity, Daddy
is it. From this poem, we gather our indelible impressions of Hughes as a brute, a wife beater, a
vampire, even an implied racist and murderer (if we extend the Hitler metaphor to its fullest
implications) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
it literally rocked the moral fiber of the world, and we?re still reeling (if more jaded). It was a subject
on fire in the public imagination at the time. Plath?s appropriation of Holocaust imagery for her own
ends, which strikes so many as grossly inappropriate, can perhaps be interpreted as stemming from
that initial horrified zeitgeist. Perhaps she felt she was raising consciousness and expressing solidarity
of a sort. Her remarks in her interview with Peter Orr about making her poetry relevant can be looked
at from such an angle.
Of course, the other point of view is that she was stealing other people s real tragedy and tacking it on
to her own little psychic turbulence for shock value and good visceral punch to the reader s gut. I think
we must always keep in mind that Plath, to A. Alvarez, referred to this poem (and Lady Lazarus , a
piece even more riddled with Holocaust imagery) as a bit of light verse. Was she being sarcastic?
Reading Alvarez s memoir, I think he felt she was quite serious. So what on earth does that tell us
about this poet? I do think it implies a profound self absorption and narcissism. Chuffing me off like a
Jew the callousness of this poem, if one stops to think about it (and it s very hard to do so while in the
poem s grip), is appalling. Its ramifications are endless where

24. National Security Requires a Clear Acknowledgement of the...
Introduction
To succeed, we must face the world as it is (Obama, 2010, p.1). Globalization has resulted in
interconnecting the world in such a manner that was unimaginable even two decades ago. No longer
can any state, nation, or people expect to remain an island. Indeed, as we are interconnected, so too are
our fates. If the United States is to ensure security and prosperity for her citizens now and for future
generations, we must clearly acknowledge that part we play in the continuum of shifting word powers
and peace. We must recognize that although we are the world s leading power, we are not the sole
possessor and arbiter of influence.
The nuclear arms race of the Cold War years has given way to a race for building alliances in this age
of globalization. If we are to be successful in our pursuit of a more peaceful and sustainable world
order, we must be cognizant of the opportunities to help fledgeling democracies take root. As well, we
must be aware of the more nefarious motives of nations for whom state intervention is merely a thin
veil for imperialistic ambitions. With this, we consider the recent events in Ukraine and its impact on
our national security.

25. Effects Of Gay Media On Lgbtq
Gay Media and The Effects it Has on Heterosexuals Attitudes Towards LGBTQ
Twenty years ago, 42 million viewers watched the sitcom Ellen, featuring Ellen DeGeneres, and the
now famous Puppy episode. That night Ellen had admitted to the world that she was gay. The backlash
to her coming out was vicious, boycotts and protests towards the sitcom seemed neverending and
when the ABC network made the decision to renew the show for another season, they went to the
extent of putting a parental advisory warning at the beginning of each episode. Shortly after, it was
cancelled for being criticised as too gay. Fast forward 20 years later, Ellen DeGeneres was given the
Medal of Freedom by former President of the United States, Barack Obama who said, It s easy to
forget now just how much courage was required for Ellen to come out on the most public of stages 20
years ago. This event has been marked as a milestone referring to the world of entertainment for the
LGBTQ community. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the two openly gay characters named Will and Jack were rarely shown being physically affectionate
with other men. However, the lead female character Grace, who is heterosexual, has often been shown
in sexual situations with men. Will and Grace has been criticized forcing heterosexual norms and
stereotypes about homosexual attributes such as gay men being feminine, flamboyant, and
promiscuous. By spring 2001, Will Grace was being watched by an average of 17.3 million viewers
each week. When coming out in the support of gay marriage, Joe Biden said It s been credited with

26. J. L. Austin s Arguments On Gender And Transformative...
J. L Austin claims that all the statements we make are performative. He thinks that language is not
simply there to describe things we see or we want to say, but the language is itself a performative
utterance. For instance, when we say I apologize , we perform an act or when we get married and say I
do , we perform an act. This means that some words in language do not exist outside of the language
world. So, when we actually say those words that have no meaning outside of the language world, we
already do (perform) something and for that, we do not specifically need gestures or movement.
Therefore, what Butler claims and Austin claims are combined, it is possible to say that gender is itself
a performative act when a woman says I am a

27. Angel Of Death Monologue
The humming was increasing in intensity when the first tentative wave of the fog arrived at our camp
like I imagined the Angel of Death appeared as it rolled through Egypt. Actually, it looked exactly like
what the special effects department dreamed up in the movie The Ten Commandments, a malicious
flowing black fog looking for a victim. The tip of the first wave descended on us and all the mystery
of the morning was explained in one horrifying second. Yikes! It was the Angel of Death s cousin, a
world class hatch of mosquitoes and they were hungry! Billions of the little blood suckers and they
were all headed our way! We leaped up and broke camp in record time. All thoughts of a leisurely
departure were swept away by the swirling, humming black monster rolling down on us. We hastily
crammed in the rest of our stuff, cinched up the ropes, tied them off, lifted the litter and ran! Mosquito
repellant was something else I forgot. Steve and I ran drunkenly with the litter over the uneven ground
trying to outrun the bloodsucking horde. We pushed, shoved and cursed it over the tree trunks and
rocks that blocked our way and arrived at the upper trailhead, spent. We set the hated thing down and
fell on the ground to catch our breath before tackling the last mile down and around the ski slopes on
the rough service road we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

28. Pros and Cons of Installing Closed-Circuit Television...
Installation of surveillance camera systems as a way to deter crimes or criminal acts has gained
traction in recent years. In some countries, surveillance camera systems also known as closed circuit
television (CCTV) cameras have also installed in educational institutions as a security measure to
address fears for the safety of the students (Hope, 2004; Corpuz, 2011). The trend, however, did not
stop. From halls and corridors, some education institutions have started to install cameras inside the
classrooms as a means not just to monitor the teachers, but also to address classroom misbehavior
(Shepherd, 2009). This paper seeks to cover the possible positive and negative effects of installing
CCTV systems inside the classrooms. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Grant (2004) said educators want video cameras in classrooms to address the issue of violence in
schools. Often teachers who are attacked have no way of proving their claims because pupils who
witness the incidents fail to back up their stories. Video camera footage could be used to substantiate
teachers versions of events as well as to deter pupils from launching the attacks (Grant, 2004). In the
Philippines, the installation of cameras inside the classrooms is seen in a similar light. As cited in
Grafil (2011), University of Santo Tomas security chief Joseph Badinas said the cameras can be used
to track people who are doing something suspicious. The reason behind the installation of CCTV
systems in the classrooms can be attributed to the triadic reciprocality principle of the social cognitive
theory (Bandura, 1986). Under this principle, human life is consisted of a perpetual series of
interactions among the environment, their individual behavior, and personal cognitive variables like
thoughts, beliefs, and perceptions. These three constructs interact and influences each other
reciprocally. Applying the

29. Minimum Wage Should Be Increased

Minimum Wage Should Be Increased
Congress enacted the federal minimum wage in 1938, during the Great Depression. Congress had two
goals; keeping workers away from poverty and boosting consumer spending for economic recovery.
Today, there is a debate, whether we should increase the minimum wage again. Increasing the
minimum wage is useful for several reasons. First, the current minimum wage has failed to keep up
with inflation. Second, a higher income level reduces employee turnover and increases efficiency and
ultimately, raising the minimum wage does not reduce employment. Even with high unemployment
rates, the minimum wage is useful for the economy.
Today the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour since July 24, 2009. It has failed to keep up with
inflation. The real value of the minimum wage rose steadily from 1938 until its value reached a peak
in 1968. Thereafter, it suffered severe erosion as Congress failed to adjust for the inflation over time.
The minimum wage of $1.60 an hour in 1968 would be $10.47 today when adjusted for inflation. This
means that the purchasing power of the minimum wage has decreased significantly over time. The
current minimum wage is no longer enough to protect workers out of poverty. A person who earns the
minimum wage and works full time (40 hours/week, 52 weeks/year) only earns about $12,000 in a
year. This is almost $7,000 below the poverty line for a family of three ($19,090)

My unfamiliar social setting is Carlsbad, California. While I had been to the beach before, I had never
been to Carlsbad or to the type of onshore resort that I stayed at. The culture shock of being in the area
with family that I am not overly close with was overwhelming at first, but being on a vacation where
each person is happy and truly relaxed was an experience that I hope to never forget. Being in
Carlsbad, California was one of the most amazing things that I have done and I wish that my stay
lasted longer. Driving into town was like entering an entirely new world that was almost completely
out of my imagination. Never had I seen so many genuine smiles in one area. Not only was the
temperature much cooler than what I am used to, but the atmosphere of being by the beach and
inhaling the humid, salty air made me feel at peace. Many people appeared to be very active in their ...

When I used to live in Georgia, many families and restaurants would put rice in the salt so the
humidity does not cause it to clump together. Not too surprisingly, I found that Californians do the
same thing. One of the best things was that the vast majority of restaurants served seafood that was
caught the same day as it was served, resulting in amazing meals. The laid back society that makes up
Carlsbad makes it easy to forget everyday stressors and to just be. The expectations are not set high,
and many people are there to have fun. The set of informal norms in Carlsbad are not so hard to
imagine. Almost everyone is wearing a bathing suit, shorts, or a sundress. Many families and couples
are roaming around, minding their own business. One of the best parts of this gorgeous beach setting
is that people hardly stop and stare and many only look at you to smile, not to judge. The air has a

The Theory of Planned Behavior
The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) predicts an individual s intention to engage in a behavior at a
particular time and place ( Summary of theory of planned behavior. Abstract, 2016). It theorizes that
individual behavioral conduct is driven by behavior intentions, where conduct intentions are function
of three determinants: an individual mentality toward behavioral conduct, subjective standards, and
perceived behavioral control ( Summary of theory of planned behavior. Abstract, 2016).

characterizes these ideas in a way that grants prediction and comprehension of specific behaviors in

the behavior, and perceived control over the behavior are typically found to anticipate behavioral
intentions with an increase level of accuracy. Thusly, these intentions, in combination of perceived
behavioral control, can represent an instinctive proportion of discrepancy in behavior (Ajzen,

34. Social And Cultural Change Prompted
Social and Cultural Change Prompted by Technology
Textile, steam, and metallurgy based innovations amounted to a legacy in Britain and a precedent for
future industrial revolutions for other countries. As urbanization became a phenomenon in Britain,
people migrated to the city centers in an effort to find employment and waged labor. New
technological advancements, during Britain s Industrial Revolution, prompted change in society and
culture. The increased demand for British goods resulted in merchants needed more cost effective
methods of production, which led to the rise of mechanization and the factory system. The separation
of social classes and labor was one major effect of the inventions. Also, women and children were the
new solution for long, hard hours and lower pay. Cultural changes were a direct result of this increase
in technological developments, reshaping familial relations and daily life, while leaving an
agriculturally based culture.
The most important change in society and societal views, that resulted from new technology in
everyday life, was a larger separation in classes and wages. As technology emerged, a new class
system followed. Before the industrial revolution, the average lifespan was higher, the economy was
stimulated by agriculture, and, above all, there was little division in social class and labor. With small
scale productions, the agricultural sector was self sufficient. However, as more people flocked to the
cities in search of employment in
