Emphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention. Usually the artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas. The area could be different in size, color, texture, shape, etc.
Rhythm is created when one or more elements of design are used repeatedly to create a feeling of organized movement. Rhythm creates a mood like music or dancing. To keep rhythm exciting and active, variety is essential.
Variety is the use of several elements of design to hold the viewer’s attention and to guide the viewer’s eye through and around the work of art.
Harmony in art is the visually satisfying effect of combining similar, related elements. For instance: adjacent colors on the color wheel, similar shapes etc.
Movement is the path the viewer’s eye takes through the work of art, often to focal areas. Such movement can be directed along lines, edges, shape, and color within the work of art. Pattern is the repeating of an object or symbol all over the work of art.
Repetition is working with patterns to make the work of art seem active. The repetition of elements of design creates unity within the work of art.
Proportion is the feeling of unity created when all parts (sizes, amounts, or number) relate well with each other. When drawing the human figure, proportion can refer to the size of the head compared to the rest of the body.

Element of art shape
Shapes are two-dimensional areas enclosed by lines that have height and width. There are two categories of shapes: geometric and organic. Geometric shapes are regular shapes made from straight lines and angles, including basic shapes like squares, triangles, rectangles, and circles, as well as other man-made shapes like diamonds, hexagons, and stars. Organic shapes are irregular and curving with a natural appearance, like leaves, flowers, shells, and clouds.
Visual arts humanities
The visual arts are creations that can be seen such as paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints, photographs and more. They are made using various mediums like paint, clay, ink and involve elements such as line, shape, color, form and space. Visual arts are different from performing arts which use the artist's body as the medium. - 4. TYPES OF SCULPTURE • A relief is a Sculpture that projects in varying degrees from a flat background or surface. • It is seen only from one particular angle (a frontal view). • There are three (3) types: 1. RELIEF SCULPTURE 1. Low Relief 2. High Relief 3. Sunken Relief
- 5. LOW RELIEF • The figures are slightly raised from the surface or the background. • Also referred to as ‘Bas Relief’.
- 6. HIGH RELIEF • Sculpture that projects or stands out from the background by at least half its depth. • Sometimes they are nearly sculpted in the round.
- 7. SUNKEN RELIEF • Relief that is carved or sunken down into the background. • Also known as incised or Intaglio. • It is created by carving. • Relief sculptures are created using the subtractive process of carving.
- 8. 2. SCULPTURE IN-THE-ROUND • Also known as Free standing Sculpture • Sculpture that exists in a three-dimensional space that can be viewed from all angles. • Free standing works. You can walk around it.

ASSEMBLAGE • A ‘modern’ type of Sculpture. • An Assemblage sculpture is the assembling or putting together of found objects to create a work of art. • The objects are either related or unrelated to each other. • Referred to as a three-dimensional collage. • Assemblages are created by gluing, soldering, welding, pasting, riveting, nailing etc. • Assemblages are created using the Additive method of Constructing.
- 11. 4. KINETIC / MOBILE SCULPTURE • Is a free-standing Sculpture that moves. • The movement is by mechanical power or by wind or water power. • Best examples are those which are suspended on or in air. • Mobiles are created using the Additive method of Constructing.
