Killzone Shadow Fall: Creating Art Tools For A New Generation Of GamesGuerrilla
This talk describes the tool improvements Guerrilla Games implemented to make Killzone Shadow Fall shine on the PlayStation 4. It highlights additions to the Maya pipeline, such as Viewport 2.0, Maya's coupling with in-game updates and in-engine deferred renderer features including real-time shadow-casting, volumetric lighting, hardware instancing, lens flares and color grading.
Efficient Rendering with DirectX* 12 on Intel® GraphicsGael Hofemeier
DirectX 12 is coming, and it brings significant improvements to the performance and power efficiency of rendering. In this session, attendees will learn how to best exploit these gains on Intel graphics hardware. We will discuss how the new API maps to 4th and 5th generation Intel® Core™ graphics hardware and give examples of how to minimize overhead and maximize efficiency on both the CPU and GPU.

Killzone Shadow Fall: Threading the Entity Update on PS4jrouwe
On the PS3 the SPUs were too limited for doing typical entity logic (e.g. humanoids walking around and shooting), so all of our entity logic was running on a single thread. For the PS4 we adopted the "entity as a job" approach and developed a set of rules that entities have to adhere to. We also developed a way to validate these rules at runtime so that no race conditions occur. This presentation will also show how we spread out entity updates across frames. The resulting system has proven itself on the PS4 -- and there have been surprisingly few race conditions that were not easily caught.
Scene Graphs & Component Based Game EnginesBryan Duggan
A presentation I made at the Fermented Poly meetup in Dublin about Scene Graphs & Component Based Game Engines. Lots of examples from my own game engine BGE - where almost everything is a component. Get the code and the course notes here: https://github.com/skooter500/BGE
The goal of this session is to demonstrate techniques that improve GPU scalability when rendering complex scenes. This is achieved through a modular design that separates the scene graph representation from the rendering backend. We will explain how the modules in this pipeline are designed and give insights to implementation details, which leverage GPU''s compute capabilities for scene graph processing. Our modules cover topics such as shader generation for improved parameter management, synchronizing updates between scenegraph and rendering backend, as well as efficient data structures inside the renderer.

In this presentation we will provide in-depth knowledge about the Unity runtime. The first part will focus on memory and how to deal with fragmentation and garbage collection. The second part on performance profiling and optimizations. Finally, there will be an overview of debugging and profiling improvements in the newly announced Unity 5.0.

Abstract: Going through early prototypes and delving into design decisions and processes that shaped development of the game, this talk gives insight into the journey game design went through while moving from an ambitious paper concept to a finished open world action RPG, with all of the small and large design decisions and choices that have to be made along the way.
