Valves Technologies
Valves are mechanical devices that help in the regulation and
control of pressure or fluid by either closing or opening the
flow direction of the fluid or pressure. Valves operate in
different positions. Valves have found their importance in
different industries and applications.
There are many different types of valves that are found in
different industries and applications are as Below:
Solenoid Valves Pneumatic Valves
Hydraulic Valves Valve Actuators
Safety Valves Ball Valves
Control Valves Butterfly Valves
Check Valves Flange Valves
SOLENOID VALVES
Solenoid valves have found their primary
use and importance in the control of
elements. Solenoid valves are grouped and
characterized depending on how they
operate.
They’re 5 types of solenoid vales-
1. Direct Acting Valves
2. 2 Way Valves
3. Pilot Operated Valves
4. 3 Way Valves
5. 4 Way Valves
PNEUMATIC VALVES
A pneumatic system is a system designed
to apply certain levels of force against
specific objects.
These pneumatic systems depend on the
pneumatic valves to ensure the correct co-
ordination and control of pressure and air.
Types of pneumatic valves are:
1. 2 Way Directional Valves
2. b) 3 Way Directional Valves
3. c) 4 Way Directional Valves
4. d) 5 Way Directional Valves
5. e) Spring Offset Valves
6. f) Dual-Inline
H YD R A U LIC VA LVES
This regulation in turn helps in sustaining a
balanced ratio of power dynamics in the
machines. Just like valve actuators,
hydraulic valves have been designed to
perform different functions. Hydraulic valves
are divided and grouped into 3 types
depending on their applications and
functions.
Types of Hydraulic valves
1. Flow Control Hydraulic Valves
2. Pressure Hydraulic Valves
3. Directional Valves
a. Check valves
b. Spool valves
VALVE ACTUATORS
A valve actuator is a type of mechanism that
operates by closing or opening a valve. Valve
actuators are of different types with each and
every valve actuator been specified for particular
functions and responsibilities.
Types of valve actuators
1. Manual valve actuators
2. Hydraulic valve actuators
3. Pneumatic valve actuators
4. Electric valve actuator
Valve actuators use in the following areas.
-Oil refineries.
-Mining industries.
-Gas exploration sites.
-Packaging, testing and assembly industries.
SAFETY VALVES
Safety valves are designed to relieve excess
pressure from equipments. Safety valves have
been used to protect equipments such as heat
exchangers and pressure vessels from thermal
expansion and eventually thermal explosion.
Types of Safety Valves
1. Spring Loaded Safety Valves
2. Pilot Operated Safety Valve
3. Dead Weight Safety Valves
BALL VALVES
The spherical disc usually has port or an
opening through the middle. When the port is in
line with both ends of the valve, the flow usually
occurs. The flow also ceases to occur when the
port and the valve ends are not on the same line
(when valve is closed). The ball valve falls under
the quarter turn valves together with the butterfly
valve and the plug valve.

1. V Port Ball Valve
2. Full Port Ball Valve
3. Kompact Valve
4. In reduced Port
5. Cavity Filler Ball Valve
6. Trunnion Ball valves
7. Floating Ball Valve
CONTROL VALVES
Control Valves are used to control the flow of
pressure, liquid level and temperature by either
closing or opening depending on the set time and
conditions.
Parts and composition of a Control Valve
-Valve positioner
-Valve body
-Valve actuator
Types of Control Valves
a) Single-seated Control Valve
b) Double-seated Control Valve
c) Air to Close Control Valve/ Fail Open
d) Fail Open/ Air to Open Control Valve
BUTTERFLY VALVES
The Butterfly is usually a metal disc mounted on
the rod. Butterfly valves and ball valves have the
same working mechanism in that both of them
allow a quick shut off and their closing
mechanism takes the form of a disk.
Types of butterfly valves.
a) Concentric butterfly valves
b) Doubly eccentric butterfly valves
c)Triply eccentric butterfly valves
CHECK VALVES
Check valves are categorized under two-port
valves which mean that they have two openings in
their body. One opening allows fluid to enter while
the other opening allows fluid to leave.
Types of Check valves
1. Ball check valves
2. Diaphragm check valves
3. Swing check valve
4. Stop check valve
5. Lift check valve
Check Valves use in the following areas.
-Irrigation sprinklers.
-Metering pumps.
-Steam boilers.
-Heating systems.
FLANGE VALVES
Flange valve fittings are made up of steel, cast,
copper, aluminum and iron. Flange valves
appear in different types and shapes. Each and
every flange valve has its own specific
functions.

1. Raised Face (RF)
2. Flat Face (FF)
3. Ring Type Joint (RTJ)

  • 8. BALL VALVES The spherical disc usually has port or an opening through the middle. When the port is in line with both ends of the valve, the flow usually occurs. The flow also ceases to occur when the port and the valve ends are not on the same line (when valve is closed). Butterfly valves and ball valves have the same working mechanism in that both of them allow a quick shut off and their closing mechanism takes the form of a disk.   • 11. CHECK VALVES Check valves are categorized under two-port valves which mean that they have two openings in their body. One opening allows fluid to enter while the other opening allows fluid to leave. Types of Check valves 1. Ball check valves 2. Diaphragm check valves 3. Swing check valve 4. Stop check valve 5. Lift check valve Check Valves use in the following areas. -Irrigation sprinklers. -Metering pumps. -Steam boilers. -Heating systems.
