Proper referencing is important to avoid plagiarism and allow readers to locate cited sources.
This document discusses the epidemiology of pulmonary embolism (PE). Some key points include:
- The true incidence of PE is unknown but estimated to be between 0.75 to 2.69 cases per 1000 individuals worldwide each year.
- The incidence and prevalence of PE increases dramatically with age. It also varies by gender and has been reported to be higher in both women and men in different studies and time periods.
- The introduction of CT pulmonary angiography led to an increase in the diagnosed incidence of PE as it allowed for improved detection, though this also led to overdiagnosis of smaller, non-clinical PEs.
- Hospital admissions for PE have increased in recent decades in the US according to

This document discusses the relationship between depression and cardiovascular disease. Some key points discussed include:
- Depression is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and increases the risk of heart attacks and mortality.
- Approximately 15-20% of patients with heart attacks also have depression. Depression is also common following a heart attack.
- Biological mechanisms linking depression to cardiovascular disease include effects on inflammation, platelet aggregation, and heart rate/rhythm. Depression is associated with poorer health behaviors as well.
- Clinical practice guidelines from organizations like the American Heart Association recommend screening, treating, and managing depression in patients with cardiovascular conditions. Managing depression may help reduce cardiovascular risks and improve health outcomes.
This document is a curriculum vitae for Dr. Phyllis Joanne Cornbleet that summarizes her academic and professional background. It includes the following information in 3 sentences:
Dr. Cornbleet received her MD and PhD from Washington University and the University of Missouri, respectively, and completed her residency in clinical pathology at the University of California, San Diego. This document discusses several aspects of managing elderly patients with multiple chronic conditions (multimorbidity). It notes that multimorbidity is highly prevalent in the elderly and impacts physical and cognitive functioning, depression, mortality and hospitalization. It also discusses how multimorbidity affects the management of specific conditions like COPD, diabetes, heart failure, osteoporosis, dementia and hypertension. The document emphasizes that clinical guidelines focused on single diseases do not adequately address the complexity of multimorbid elderly patients.
This curriculum vitae summarizes the education and career of Dr. Mark Kenneth Robbins. He received his Bachelor's degree from Gettysburg College in 1983, his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in 1987, and completed his residency and fellowship training by 1994. He maintains board certifications in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, and critical care medicine.
Hypokalemia in Emergency Medicine is an article that discusses potassium levels in the body and defines hypokalemia as a potassium level below 3.5 mEq/L. It notes that nearly 98% of the body's potassium is intracellular and plays an important role in cellular membrane potential. Hypokalemia can result from renal or GI losses, inadequate diet, medications, or a transcellular shift of potassium into cells. As many as 20% of hospitalized patients and 14% of outpatients undergoing testing may have mild hypokalemia, though it is clinically significant in only 4-5% of cases. Approximately 80% of patients on diuretics become hypokalemic.
This document is a curriculum vitae for Dr. Marwan Sabbagh. It lists his current positions, which include directorships at research institutes and professorships. It then outlines his extensive previous professional experience in academic medicine and clinical research spanning over 25 years. The CV provides details of his education, honors, memberships, and publications. It presents Dr. Sabbagh as a highly accomplished neurologist and leader in Alzheimer's disease and dementia research.

Mass gatherings: Impacts on emergency departmentsJamie Ranse
This document discusses the impact that mass gatherings have on emergency departments. Mass gatherings refer to large groups of people coming together for a common purpose. They can strain emergency departments due to challenges in the environment and patient egress. The document reviews literature on mass gathering events in the US and cases from a music festival, Commonwealth Games, and mass casualty events. It finds that while in-event health services are reasonably understood, more research is needed on the impact to external services like ambulances and hospitals to improve collaboration between providers.
This curriculum vitae outlines the extensive education and career of Dr. Jorge E. Montes. It details that he earned his medical degree in 1970 in Colombia and has since had residencies and fellowships in pediatrics, pediatric critical care, and anesthesia in the US. Dr. Montes has held numerous medical director and teaching positions and is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric critical care. He has licenses to practice medicine in multiple states and has extensive publications, presentations, and international experience in pediatrics and emergency medicine.

The document examines the role of Terlipressin in treating refractory septic shock. It discusses how Terlipressin, a vasopressin analogue, has been used to treat conditions like variceal bleeding and hepatorenal syndrome. Some studies have found Terlipressin effective for septic shock resistant to norepinephrine. However, the evidence is limited and more large randomized controlled trials are needed before recommending regular use of Terlipressin for septic shock.
The document is the Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure. It was published in 2003 by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and aimed to provide guidelines for preventing and managing high blood pressure. The report was developed by a committee of experts in hypertension and related fields and reviewed by additional experts. It outlines recommendations for classifying and staging hypertension, as well as treating and controlling high blood pressure.
New biochemical markers of risk of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD)meducationdotnet
This document discusses the use of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) as a biomarker for predicting cardiovascular disease risk. It notes that traditional risk factors have low sensitivity and specificity. HsCRP is emerging as a stronger predictor of risk than LDL and can help reclassify some patients as higher risk. Larger studies like the JUPITER trial are investigating using hsCRP levels to determine who may benefit from statin therapy independent of LDL levels. While hsCRP shows promise, more research is still needed to understand genetic and other factors that may influence hsCRP levels and risk predictions.
Outpatient palliative Care for patients with Cystic Fibrosis and Sickle CellToluwalase A. Ajayi
This document discusses the potential benefits of palliative care services for patients with cystic fibrosis and sickle cell disease. It outlines how palliative care can improve patients' quality of life by effectively managing their symptoms like pain, fatigue, and anxiety. The document also notes challenges these patients face, like frequent hospitalizations and low quality of life due to their conditions. It argues palliative care should be instituted early to help alleviate symptoms and allow patients to have increased opportunities for an improved quality of life. The document concludes by discussing barriers to palliative care services and the importance of expanding resources to help meet the needs of these patient populations.

This slide is special for master students (MIBS & MIFB) in UUM. Also useful for readers who are interested in the topic of contemporary Islamic banking.
