The Esthetic Theory and A Portrait of the Artist as a...
The Esthetic Theory and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
In A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Stephen Dedalus defines beauty and the artist s
comprehension of his/her own art. Stephen uses his esthetic theory with theories borrowed from St.
Thomas Aquinas and Plato. The discourse can be broken down into three main sections: 1) A
definitions of beauty and art. 2) The apprehension and qualifications of beauty. 3) The artist s view of
his/her own work. I will explain how the first two sections of his esthetic theory relate to Stephen.
Furthermore, I will argue that in the last section, Joyce is speaking of Stephen Dedalus and A Portrait
of the Artist as a Young Man as his art.
First, Stephen states the theory that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In that point of Stephen s life, he realized that his desires, and anyone s desires, are only animal
reflexes: We are all animals. I also am an animal. (Pg. 149).
Given that beauty is only intelligible and not physical, It [beauty] awakens, or ought to awaken, or
induces, or ought to induce, an esthetic stasis, an ideal pity or an ideal terror, a stasis called forth. (Pg.
150). Stephen then gives a definition of art, Art is the human disposition of sensible or intelligible
matter for an esthetic end. (Pg. 150). That art is formed from the Gross Earth, meaning the artist s
experiences. Art does not start as something beautiful, but from experiences that are rough and raw.
What transforms these experiences into art is how one can recreate the esthetic emotions felt by the
artist. An example of this is when Stephen sees the Bird Girl when wandering on the shore of the Irish
Sea. He experiences such enlightenment of only the soul and mind: Her eyes had called him and his
soul had leaped at the call. To live, to err, to fall, to triumph, to recreate life out of life. A wild angel
had appeared to him, the angel of mortal youth and beauty, an envoy from the fair courts of life, to
throw open before him in an instant of ecstasy the gates of all the ways of error and glory. (Pg. 123).
This epiphany, according to the esthetic theory, would be considered pure art because Stephen
experienced it esthetically.
The next stage of this discourse,

2.1 Security Framework in Mobile Cloud Computing:
Portable distributed computing is developing step by step because of the prominence of distributed
computing and expanding employments of cell phones. Numerous analysts are demonstrating their
advantage towards this innovation. There are numerous issues in portable distributed computing
because of numerous restrictions of cell phones like low battery force, restricted storage rooms, data

Pastoral Caution
pastoral preacher must not only be attuned to his congregation, but he must be attuned to the world as
well. He must know how to make the Bible relevant. Studying society and the culture can do this.
Caution should be taken in the endeavor so that he does not become enticed by the world s lies. 2. The
key components of effective pastoral preaching have been derived from my person study of the
content, concepts, and resources in presented in this course. The first component would be a sense of

I feel confident when it comes to planning a sermons series. The in class activity helped me. In class
we were split into groups and had to come up with a sermon series. My group had to come up with a
group that preached through a book. As we spent time reading through the book looking for natural
divisions and discussion, I was able to understand some aspect that I should employ in my person
ministry. Dr. Bryson s text, Expository Preaching, was probably the best resource. I liked how he
walks readers through the process of how to preach through a book. By the end of the book one knows
how to break a book down into smaller preaching units. Dr. Rummages Planning Your Preaching

The Importance Of Single Parenting
For my reading pleasure, I was able to read Help! I am Raising My Children Alone by
T. D. Jakes concerning single parenting (Jakes, 2011). This book was written as a practical guide with
the intentions to help single parents overcome the obstacles of single parenting and discover the
hidden treasure that lies beneath the struggle. T. D. Jakes is a bishop, therefore there is a copious
amount of faith and biblical scripture woven into his writing, however he does maintain practicality as
well. Jakes (2011) encourage single parents to not give up, despite their circumstance. He also equips
the single parents with thought provoking questions at the end of each chapter for reflecting, and
activities to do with their families that will be beneficial to the growth and stability of each family.
I would like to begin with a quote. Jakes (2011) states I raise my bow. Even if I am shot, I will raise
my bow. I will lift it above my past, my pain, and my fears (p. 200). These arrows; my children, are
my defense. I believe that this is a powerful statement to abide by to counteract the negative stigma
that often comes with single parenting. Many single parents+ usually see their mistakes and feel
guilty, struggle with past hurts, and may feel at a loss when it comes to raising their kids. However,
Jakes encourages single parents to aim their bow high so that their children may soar. Single parents
seeing their children soar to become great people in society gives purpose and meaning

Why Do People Go Into The Experience Machine
1. Nozick s Experience Machine thought experiment is supposed to demonstrate that humans are not
solely motivated by pleasure. Nozick states that humans would not go into the Experience Machine
because upon going into it or leaving, they would realize that the events that transpired were not real.
This small self doubt would ultimately make the individual using the machine feel as though
something is lacking and would lose the pleasure gained from the experience (p. 44). This then proves
that humans ultimately value other things higher than their own happiness. I object Nozick s statement
that nobody would choose to go into the Experience Machine. Given that utilitarians exist who believe
that the sole purpose in life is to maximize happiness, I believe that Nozick s assumption is too strong
and finite given the reasons that he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each individual lives a very different life. Depending on how hard one s life in reality is, there will be
varying answers for the question that Nozick poses. If this question were to be asked to someone who
lives a life in which they are comfortably situated in, they are more likely to decline the offer to go
into the Experience Machine. However, in the event that someone lives a hard, painful life, such as
one riddled with disease or poverty, they would most likely choose to spend time in the Experience
Machine to escape the current state that they are in. For these individuals, it would not matter if they
would feel unfulfilled during or after the simulation is over, as they would be willing to sacrifice their
dignity to live a life of happiness, namely because they have relatively little to lose. This is seen in our
actual reality with those who suffer

over a million copies of her famous vampire books, while overcoming many obstacles such as the
death of her child and husband, and she changed the way people view vampires in literature. Anne
Rice has written many vampire books, including The Vampire Chronicles and she has inspired many
different kinds of readers ( Anne Rice Wikipedia, 2017). She has also written the New Tales of a

Her mother put her in an academy that she hated. She persisted with school, even though she didn t
like it, she graduated and went to college. Later, her daughter died of adult leukemia. This led Anne
and her husband, Stan Rice, to become alcoholics. She also developed Obsessive Compulsive
Disorder, thinking that everything she touched became contaminated. Because of that, she started
holding herself responsible for her child s death ( Anne Rice Famous Authors, 2017). She then had
another child in 1978, Christopher Rice, which led to her and her husband to quit drinking. Later, her
husband died from brain cancer when Christopher was 22 ( Anne Rice Famous Authors, 2017). Anne
Rice has changed the way people visualize vampires throughout history. She has impacted the genre
of vampires more than any person. The only person that might have done more is Bram Stoker who
created Dracula. But Anne has made re animated corpses into beautiful aristocrats, who look human
except their fangs and remained evil. The vampires she has written about are recurring into more and

A character in the book who showed the most bravery and potential would have to be Albus Severus
Potter, who is Harry Potter s younger son who got in the Slytherin house. Albus in the story didn t
accomplish the goals his father did in school but instead he became his own person and followed his
own goals instead of his father s and his goal was to go back in time and bring back Cedric Diggory,
and he had the idea of going into the Ministry and getting the time turner which takes a lot of courage.
Albus severus Potter is defined as the protagonist of the story because of his action to go back in time
and save Amos Diggory s son who was murdered by Lord Voldemort in the Triwizard Tournament in
the third task. Though Albus is a very a brave and intelligent young man he was also a real social
outcast due to the fact that he was the great Harry Potter s son in slytherin and he also did not get
along with his father very well. There was even times where he wished that Harry wasn t his father,
and does not really communicate much with other students at school except his best friend Scorpius

The Importance Of Communication In The Basque Culture
The Basque community as a whole are a very close, tight knit family regardless if it means they are
related by blood or not. The Roman Catholic religion populates for about 94% of the Basque country.
Aside from religion, activities outside the home such as sporting events and traditional festivities
throughout the year are ways they define their culture. It is important for them to keep these going
from generation to generation. Every culture has the same framework model, but with differences
depending on location geographically. This paper explores the Basque culture and how their beliefs
and values on children and family affect the way they live. As mentioned in Galanti s text there are
four C s of culture. Each much be communicated properly to the patient in order to receive optimal
health care: first C) What do you call your problem? second C) What do you think caused your
problem? third C) How do you cope with your condition? fourth C) What concerns do you have
regarding the condition? (Galanti 2008).
Communication in the Basque Culture The Basque language is known as Euskara and is spoken
primarily in the northern central area of Spain and is known to be Europe s oldest living languages.
The languages spoken are both Basque and Spanish and both can be very complex with several
different dialects. (Organization for Economic Co operation and Development, 2011). Nonverbal

Comparison Of The Star Spangled Banner, And The Star...
The most topical controversial question that the nation is debating on is whether the song America,
The Beautiful should replace The Star Spangled Banner as the National Anthem? The point of a
National Anthem is to uplift spirits and many would agree that that is done with The Star Spangled
Banner. The Star Spangled Banner should remain the National Anthem as it best represents America,
and what this country stands for. The current National Anthem instills pride in the nation, alludes to
the courage and power Americans have, and does not insinuate that all Americans believe in God.
As The Star Spangled Banner is heard through the speakers of the football stadium, pride fills the
hearts of all the Americans while they stand tall. The sole purpose that the song was written was to get
America through a time of war and to instill a sense of strength and pride. The songs main focus is on
the star spangled banner or the American flag. When people think of America they picture the red,
white, and blue flag with the fifty stars. The American flag gives America something that represents
them and that is why they wave the flag around proudly when given the chance. That very same pride
that fellow Americans get when waving the flag is the same pride that Francis Scott Key felt as he
seen the flag flying over Fort Henry. These following lines of The Star Spangled Banner is proof that
Americans should be proud to live in America, What so proudly we hail d at the twilight s last

Night Light Poem
Poem 1: Night Light by Kate Barnes
I think this poem is a story about someone who is dreaming because it says if I wake up I can write it
down . We don t know who the speaker is or if it s a man or a woman. It could be Kate Barnes. The
first thing I noticed is that the word black is used seven times in the poem. The word silhouette is also
in the poem and a silhouette is a black image. The words dark, darkness, and Ink Spot are also used.
Ink Spot is the name of a thin black dog, so that is an example of imagery for black or darkness. The
word light is used three times. Darkness and light is a recurring theme in the poem. Maybe the title of
the poem Night Light means finding the light in the darkness. The light and the darkness could ...

It s saying that we need to take the time to stop and relax and enjoy life. I think the poet John
Tagliabue is the speaker and he is giving advice about how to live your life. He thinks people should
stop trying to pull yourself together for some clear meaning by taking life too seriously. He uses Van
Gogh as an example of someone who was a great painter, but he wound up cutting off his own ear
because of his depression and mental illness, Look what intensity did to poor great Van Gogh .
Instead, he says we should be a dumb bell for a few minutes at least . We should let our minds rest and
clear the stress. I think the line we don t want Sunday church bells ringing constantly is a symbol for
people always having to be somewhere at a certain time, having too many commitments. I think the
title of the poem means that if you don t go to extremes, then you won t be bored and you can still be a
little intense if you want to be. You can still get really into the things you love, but don t let anything
take over your life. The poem is written as a question and then one long sentence in two line stanzas
with the second line indented until the final stanza which is three lines with the second and third line
indented. Tagliabue uses a commas and semi colons as punctuation in the long sentence. He doesn t
capitalize the first letter of the sentence. The punctuation looks different on the page and makes you

Public Water Supply For Drinking And Agricultural Water
Brazos River, the streams and lakes along the river are a major source of public water supply for
drinking and agricultural uses for communities in around the Brazos River basin. Segment 1242 of
Brazos River and the watersheds (Leon River watershed and Lower Brazos Little Brazos watershed)
and their tributaries flowing into Brazos river in this segment are known to be impaired for bacteria,
salts, nutrients and chlorophyll a (TCEQ, 2013). The flow of nutrients from rain water run off from
land into Brazos River results in eutrophication of the river and algae (Chlorophyll a) bloom, thereby
reducing the dissolved oxygen content in the water. This hypoxia in the water causes the death of fish

4.2 Objectives
The purpose of modeling the fate and transport of pollutants in surface water is for a better
understanding of the relationship between pollutant loads during rainfall events and to be able to
simulate and make predictions of future water quality conditions. By connecting stream flow rates
model to pollutant loads, the relationship between pollutant transport and water quality can be
determined. For this research, models of the fate and transport of the chloride and sulfate in Leon
River was constructed.
4.3 Conceptual Model
The conceptual model for this research is a network model which models the rate of flow of pollutant
through a connected network of points in surface water. The water quality monitoring stations
represent such points and serve as containers. From analysis of the water quality monitoring
measurements of pollutants at each chosen station, it is observed that the concentration levels of
pollutants tend to be high where it has not rained for a long time compared to where it rained the
previous day or few days ago. This then can be interpreted to mean that the concentration of pollutant
in surface water is proportional to the amount of water in the surface water body. Drought condition
will concentrate the pollutants, while on the other hand rain events help to dilute the pollutes because
of increase of water and also contribute to the flow of the pollutant from one point to the other

Why Is Cerberus Important In Greek Mythology
There are many unique creatures mentioned in Greek mythology. One of the most well known may be
the three headed dog known as Cerberus ( Cerberus: The Three Headed Dog of Greek Mythology ).
When people think of Greek mythology, the most common thing that comes to their head is Zeus,
Hera, Athena, etc. However, there is another figure in Greek mythology that many people should also
recognize when this topic is mentioned to them and his name is Cerberus. Cerberus is the best monster
in Greek mythology as he is known in myths such as Hercules and his 12 Labors as well as his
relevance in modern culture. Cerberus is a three headed dog from Greek mythology. He lives in front
of the gates of the underworld which is owned by Hades, the god of the underworld. His parents are
Typhon and Echidna, two monstrous creatures from Greek mythology. Cerberus is described to have

one can even say that the archetypal hellhound used in modern horror and adventure movies are

The Pros And Cons Of Subsidies In The Market
Free markets are very effective in determining an equilibrium in the market that benefits everyone.
Nevertheless free markets do not always reach optimal output levels due to external market forces
such as demographic factors or technological changes. The fact that a free market does not reaches
optimal output is called market failure and leads to welfare loss (also called deadweight loss). In order
to avoid market failure, government intervention, such as subsidies, is needed.
Due to the industrialization and to new technologies the production of food became more effective
than ever before. First the governments in the European Union supported and promoted the huge

One of these possibilities are subsidies. A subsidy is a financial help by a government for a specific
economic sector in a country s economy.
According to the WTO (World Trade Organization) a subsidy is defined as a financial contribution by
a government which confers a benefit. Also the WTO states that there are two general types of
subsidies. The first type of subsidy is an export subsidy which is defined as a benefit conferred on a
firm by the government that is contingent on exports. The second type of subsidy is a domestic
subsidy which is defined as a benefit not directly linked to exports. (www.wto.org)
Subsidies are a way for governments to intervene in the market in order to guarantee a stable market
and to eradicate the welfare loss. Welfare loss, also known as deadweight loss, is the reduction in total
economic surplus that results from the adoption of a policy. (McDowell, 2009 p.201)
A subsidy can appear in different forms, such as cash payments, tax concessions, and in kind
subsidies. Subsidies that appear in form of cash payments are mostly paid via cheque or bank transfer
to specific chosen firms or institutions.

Tornado Compare And Contrast
This is a comparison of how different and how are tornadoes and hurricanes the same. So, the first
thing that s different about them i have is you have a lot of time to tell when a monstrous hurricane is
coming but with a tornado it is like magic you don t get a couple days like you would a tornado a
tornado just appears.
Now here s a comparison of the two There are signs that a tornado and a hurricane is about to happen

Landscape With The Fall Of Icarus Essay
Daedalus Devastation There are many ways to interpret the myth Icarus but there will always be some
similar points and differences between them. The painting, Landscape with the Fall of Icarus, was
painted by Pieter Breughel the Elder is one way express his thoughts about the myth. Another
interpretation of the legend Icarus is a poem written by W.H. Auden called, Musée des Beaux Arts.
This infamous fable was about a young adventurous boy falling to his death while escaping prison
with his father, using waxed wings. This two main interpretations have the same theme in mind,
humans tend to ignore situations if they are not applied to them. In the poem, Musée des Beaux Arts,
the poem shows how people will neglect anything bad if it doesn t pertain to them. The speaker in the
poem notices how everything turns away..., (line 14) from a dangerous, horrible or miserable situation.
This connects to everyday life since once humans see something horrible, we would just sympathize
and walk on. For example, like the problem in Africa, humans sympathize that the children are
starving but they don t do anything that much. People don t also realize that suffering can happen
anytime even when you are eating or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In both of them, they have mentioned Icarus at least once and none for Daedalus. They also have
noticed about the ship leaving behind a drowning Icarus, even though there was a pretty good chance
they saw Icarus fall. This shows how people gravitate to the easier path than the harder path of helping
people . The difference they had between the two was that in the poem, Auden included everyday life
and Breughel only illustrated ships, people, and cities. They also had different opinions about the
ploughman since Auden believed the ploughman was looking up, but in the painting it was clear that
the ploughman was looking towards the ground, trying to avoid not having to help

Critical Whiteness in Education
Theoretical Framework of the Study
As seen in the previous literature, empirical research in the last twenty years reveals the positive
student outcomes associated to service learning. However, as Susan Jones (2002) argues, student s
ability to actively participate in all aspects of their service learning experience depends on the
intersection of the student s own background. . . , developmental readiness for such a learning
experience, and the privileging conditions that put a college student in a community service
organization as a volunteer in the first place (p. 13). Accordingly, different complexities may emerge
when students engage with ill structured, complex social issues present in the community service
settings typically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Frankenberg (1993) describes Whiteness as multidimensional: First, whiteness is a location of
structural advantage, of race privilege. Second, it is a standpoint and place from which white people
look at ourselves, at others, and at society. Third, whiteness refers to a set of cultural practices that are
usually unmarked and unnamed (p. 1). Although Whiteness has intangible systems of oppression,
inequality, and unearned advantage that are not necessary seen, heard, or felt; nonetheless, they
reproduce and support the idea of White as the ultimate form of racial identity. Butin (2005) examines
the dynamics of Whiteness, and the extent to which student resistance is conceptualized as occurring
due to dominant students rejection of the exposure and analysis of these same hidden and/or explicit
social, cultural, and academic structures and practices of the school that privilege and sustains White,
middle class norms (p. 117). As such, addressing the dynamics of social problems through readings,
classroom discussions, and community services visits may confront students with their conditions of
privilege, as well as with new epistemologies that do not necessary resonate with students previous
knowledge of the world; therefore, students may feel uncomfortable, uneasy and unwilling to discuss
social issues.

The Night Of The Living Dead
The true origins of zombies and the undead can likely be traced back to the stories men and women
first told around campfires. They certainly date back to the origins of written language in tales such as
the epic of Gilgamesh, and have taken on many different attributes through the generations. The
shambling creatures that were first displayed in the movie titled The Night of the Living Dead are
what many would consider today to be the typical representation of the modern zombie story (Estes,
2012).
The zombies in the story Meathouse Man by George R. R. Martin do not follow this trend. They are
throwbacks to, and futuristic interpretations of, the Hattian zombie that is often acknowledged to be
the modern origin of today s zombie mythology.

Substance Abuse And The Active Substance Abuser
Unbeknownst to many addicts and alcoholics, is the silent suffering of their loved ones as they
struggle to cope with the misadventures of the active substance abuser. Unfortunately, many people in
this situation may feel alone and lost when it comes to the pathway to recovery. Not only for the
addict or alcoholic, but a course of action that can give back some semblance of control and peace to
the spouse. Sadly, the odds are never in favor for either of the two parties involved; however, people
determined to salvage their connection with a loved one may yet be able to do so. Substance abuse of
a loved one can be a near impossible situation to manage; whether intimacy problems, unmet living
responsibilities and/or co dependency issues ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sexual intercourse or palpable affection are but two, albeit very critical, factors that play to the healthy
levels of physical intimacy shared by a couple. Unfortunately, when a spouse abuses substances a
whole litany of side effects can occur. For starters, the non alcoholic spouse may be generally less
attractive due to their significant others behavior. Also, the libido of either a man or a woman are
adversely impacted by chronic substance abuse. Lastly, desire may be there for both parties, but male
addicts and alcoholics may experience some degree of erectile dysfunction. Other than the obvious
endorphins, dopamine and other feel good chemical reactions that naturally occur when two people
engage in sexual congress, couples that fall short in this part of a relationship may feel additional
frustration and inadequacies that tie into a deeper emotional intimacy concern. Secondly, emotional
intimacy is for most couples the far more important tie that will make or break many relationships.
After all, couples spend a majority of their time connecting on levels other than sex. Respect, trust,
value and other feelings create bonds that will dictate the success of a relationship. Alcohol and drugs
are effective in their means to distort and inhibit emotional connections. For the substance abuser, the
priority first and foremost is how to get that next drink or drug. This is a tough pill to swallow for
most loved ones, as they may

The Swallow Man
The next lesson was, Asking a stranger for something is the easiest way to ensure that he will not give
it. Much better simply to show him a friend with a need (62). In order to get supplies, the Swallow
Man would create stories that make strangers feel bad for him or to make it seem like they have
something in common. This is how their trust was gained. Only then would the Swallow Man mention
anything they were looking for. Using this method, the Swallow Man could get food and supplies that
strangers had no need of anyway. Another lesson of the Swallow Man was, Regret is like golden
jewelry: at the proper moment it may prove immeasurably valuable, but it is rarely wise to advertise
its presence to strangers (93). If a person is seen having regrets, then they may be taken advantage of.
That is why it is imperative that even if a person does have regrets about their actions, they should not
show that they do. Otherwise, the witness of the regret may see weakness and think that they can
overpower that person. A similar lesson is, Transitions are periods of weakness (160). This transition
is similar to regret. If a person is seen as being weak during transitions, they can be taken advantage of
in the same way they can with regret. That is why the Swallow Man avoided both of these situations
whenever he could. A lesson used in the Dwór was, Carrying light in darkness is an invitation to be
snuffed out. Learn to keep your sight in the dark (196). Seeing in the dark is

Innocence In Toni Morrison s The Bluest Eye
In Toni Morrison s, The Bluest Eye Pecola Breedlove s life is told through the perspectives of her
peers and acquaintances which portray her as a poor, unfortunate, and ugly black child. She goes
about her life being beaten down at every opportunity, almost literally, and her singular wish for blue
eyes signifies her silent plea for a life better than the one she s currently living. Pecola exists in her life
like a doormat, to be stepped on, soiled and lost in the demented world that criticizes and dehumanizes
her. Pecola Breedlove s search for justice begins and ends with her singular wish for eyes she believed
would make the world view her differently, a wish that represents her innocence as well as her
knowledge of the cold reality of social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Toni Morrison does this to convey that people often only try to understand someone and their
problems once they re too far gone to help. Pecola s conversation with her own imagination gives the
unfortunate circumstance that Pecola finally has a friend she talks to, but it s one she s had to create
herself. Not only does this reveal that she s been abandoned by even characters who caused her harm,
but also that her imaginary friend isn t formed from a child s imagination but is an escape from the
darkness that she s witnessed. Finally having access to the inner working s of Pecola s mind it s clear
that her way of thinking has been altered, for example she thinks that all the stares she s been getting
from people in the town are because they ve noticed her blue eyes . In reality her eyes haven t changed
color, and people are staring at her because they know she s pregnant with her father s child. As the
novel progresses it s not clear that the lives of other people are really affecting Pecola because she s
seen by everyone to take what she s given and move on. However there s a piece of the novel that s
confusing up until Pecola s breaking point. That being the titles of the chapters, which starts out as a
chapter on its own. Here is the house. It is green and white... , this simple paragraph is repeated, each

The Anatomy of Homo Sapiens is Unique
The anatomy of Homo sapiens is unique in several ways and sets us apart from other species all across
the world. One of the most distinguishing characteristics that differentiates Homo sapiens from other
species is the utilization of bipedal locomotion. Humans have established a unique way of moving
from one location to another that is due to the evolution numerous anatomical developments over
millions of years. Hominid bipedalism has evolved as a product of natural selection, a theory coined
by Charles Darwin in 1859. This theory of evolution through the process of natural selection explains
that some organisms are more reproductively fit than others. Therefore, these organisms are able to
pass on their beneficial genes to the next generation. Essentially, traits that give certain organisms
specific advantages, such as bipedalism in hominids, will be selected for in greater numbers, and
therefore more individuals in the succeeding populations will display these beneficial traits (Darwin
1859). Darwin s theory can be used to help describe the central idea behind the fascinating
transformation process from quadrupedalism to bipedalism.
One of the most intriguing aspects surrounding this topic is the multiple different hypotheses for the
evolution from quadrupedal gait to bipedal locomotion. Due to the fact that evidence suggests that the
emergence of bipedalism occurred as early as 6 millions years ago, there have been many hyptotheses
as to how the earliest hominids

The Importance Of Community Service
The efficiency of service can be looked at form multiple angles. Does the motive behind service less
than its effectiveness? I will be exploring just that in this paper by evaluating the net benefit to a
community and its lasting impact on the individual performing mandatory versus voluntary service. I
was drawn to this topic after listening to Tovia Smith s podcast, Selfish Giving: Does It Count If You
Get In Return?. Smith interviews many professionals on their opinion on service done for personal
gain. In the article, Community Service, published by the Center for Justice and Reconciliation, they
define mandatory community Service as restorative justice for offenders. The Center for Justice and
Reconciliation leads a reader to believe that offenders doing community service is no different than
when a high school student does it for a college application. I believe that the Center for Justice and
Reconciliation is correct that offenders and high school students both partake in mandatory
community service but for different reasons. High school students use service to get into college while
offenders use service to make amends with the community they have harmed. Both Smith and the
Center for Justice and Reconciliation agree that service is good but differ on what makes it efficient.
While I agree with Smith s main argument surrounding service, I believe that community service
remains effective when you evaluate the motives, net benefit to community, and a lasting impact

Belgian Imperialism
Imperialism helped the Belgians discriminate, segregate, brutally torture, and even kill the Congolese
in genocidal proportions worse than the Holocaust, for economic benefit. Imperialism is what let the
Belgians easily seized all control of the Congolese supply of ivory, rubber, and minerals for economic
power and benefit. Because the Congolese did not want to be controlled the Belgians inflicted brutal
control over the people, then after that they started killing them in inhumane ways. The Congolese
also lost most of their own culture, but when the Belgians invaded their country and took over they did
bring religion and education. Overall the Belgians destroyed the Congo because of their greed, and
their past is still remembered today. Imperialism had a vast impact on the Congo s economy. The first
thing the Belgians wanted was control over the Congo s economy, so that they could have their
supplies of ivory and rubber. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the Congolese was first taken over, King Leopold II made the Belgian s first take children from
villages to raise them so that they would help the Force Publique a group of gendarmerie and military

people of the Congo into doing the work, and if they didn t do as they were told to the Force Publique
had methods such as cutting off their hands, chaining them, enslaving wives and daughters, and taking
their children to also join the Force Publique. Until the book The Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
was published, the Belgians were able to get away with terrorizing the Congolese. After that book was
published the Europeans were outraged with the Belgians ruling the Congo, so they later helped the
Congolese get their own government which is now the Democratic Republic of the

Successful Aging Through Participatory Arts Programming...
80 is the new 40:
Successful Aging through Participatory Arts Programming for Older Adults
The United States is in the midst of a major demographic shift. People are living longer which means
that the population of older adults, those sixty years and over, is growing. It is projected that by the
year 2040, older adults will far outnumber school age children. Older adults are currently healthier and
lead more productive lives than ever before, due in part to modern medicine and the new idea of
seeing older people for their potential rather than their problems. This has prompted the concept of
creative aging or successful aging. This positive view of aging is not new, only the terminology.
Cicero, the Roman philosopher, is perhaps the first to introduce the idea of good aging in his essay, On
Old Age which was penned in the year 44 BC. He wrote this essay in his early 60 s to show that old
age is not a phase of decline and loss, and if approached properly becomes a time for positive change
and productive functioning (Baltes Baltes, 1990). Over the last few decades the subject of successful
aging has been the topic of a number of scholarly articles and books and has recently been tied to
participatory arts and humanities programming through agencies that provide services to the older
adult demographic. As public libraries struggle to remain relevant in today s society and respond to the
changing needs of older adult patrons it is important to become more

Obstacles In Tricia Downing s Autobiography, Cycle Of Hope
In Tricia Downing s autobiography, Cycle of Hope, she faces and over comes many life changing
obstacles. Downing wrote the book to show that it is possible to overcome anything, no matter how
traumatic. After her accident she is faced with many different obstacles. Between the many problems
while still in the hospital and all of the obstacles when she gets to go home, she shows that it is not the
end of the world. She continues to push through the pain and overcome her obstacles. Anyone can do
anything they set their minds to with the proper motivation. She has taken her life changing journey
public to motivate readers. Her goal is to motivate anyone who is in a tough place to keep trying and
overcome any obstacle. Downing s battles began at a very young age. Her mother decided that she
wanted a daughter with dark skin and dark hair, so she decided to adopt a baby girl, Tricia. For Mom,
race wasn t an issue. She just wanted a girl. A beautiful, brown baby girl (Downing, 23). Tricia was

  • 2. The Esthetic Theory and A Portrait of the Artist as a... The Esthetic Theory and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man In A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Stephen Dedalus defines beauty and the artist s comprehension of his/her own art. Stephen uses his esthetic theory with theories borrowed from St. Thomas Aquinas and Plato. The discourse can be broken down into three main sections: 1) A definitions of beauty and art. 2) The apprehension and qualifications of beauty. 3) The artist s view of his/her own work. I will explain how the first two sections of his esthetic theory relate to Stephen. Furthermore, I will argue that in the last section, Joyce is speaking of Stephen Dedalus and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man as his art. First, Stephen states the theory that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In that point of Stephen s life, he realized that his desires, and anyone s desires, are only animal reflexes: We are all animals. I also am an animal. (Pg. 149). Given that beauty is only intelligible and not physical, It [beauty] awakens, or ought to awaken, or induces, or ought to induce, an esthetic stasis, an ideal pity or an ideal terror, a stasis called forth. (Pg. 150). Stephen then gives a definition of art, Art is the human disposition of sensible or intelligible matter for an esthetic end. (Pg. 150). That art is formed from the Gross Earth, meaning the artist s experiences. Art does not start as something beautiful, but from experiences that are rough and raw. What transforms these experiences into art is how one can recreate the esthetic emotions felt by the artist. An example of this is when Stephen sees the Bird Girl when wandering on the shore of the Irish Sea. He experiences such enlightenment of only the soul and mind: Her eyes had called him and his soul had leaped at the call. To live, to err, to fall, to triumph, to recreate life out of life. A wild angel had appeared to him, the angel of mortal youth and beauty, an envoy from the fair courts of life, to throw open before him in an instant of ecstasy the gates of all the ways of error and glory. (Pg. 123). This epiphany, according to the esthetic theory, would be considered pure art because Stephen experienced it esthetically. The next stage of this discourse, ... • 6. The Importance Of Single Parenting For my reading pleasure, I was able to read Help! I am Raising My Children Alone by T. D. Jakes concerning single parenting (Jakes, 2011). This book was written as a practical guide with the intentions to help single parents overcome the obstacles of single parenting and discover the hidden treasure that lies beneath the struggle. T. D. Jakes is a bishop, therefore there is a copious amount of faith and biblical scripture woven into his writing, however he does maintain practicality as well. Jakes (2011) encourage single parents to not give up, despite their circumstance. He also equips the single parents with thought provoking questions at the end of each chapter for reflecting, and activities to do with their families that will be beneficial to the growth and stability of each family. I would like to begin with a quote. Jakes (2011) states I raise my bow. Even if I am shot, I will raise my bow. I will lift it above my past, my pain, and my fears (p. 200). These arrows; my children, are my defense. I believe that this is a powerful statement to abide by to counteract the negative stigma that often comes with single parenting. Many single parents+ usually see their mistakes and feel guilty, struggle with past hurts, and may feel at a loss when it comes to raising their kids. However, Jakes encourages single parents to aim their bow high so that their children may soar. Single parents seeing their children soar to become great people in society gives purpose and meaning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Why Do People Go Into The Experience Machine 1. Nozick s Experience Machine thought experiment is supposed to demonstrate that humans are not solely motivated by pleasure. Nozick states that humans would not go into the Experience Machine because upon going into it or leaving, they would realize that the events that transpired were not real. This small self doubt would ultimately make the individual using the machine feel as though something is lacking and would lose the pleasure gained from the experience (p. 44). This then proves that humans ultimately value other things higher than their own happiness. I object Nozick s statement that nobody would choose to go into the Experience Machine. Given that utilitarians exist who believe that the sole purpose in life is to maximize happiness, I believe that Nozick s assumption is too strong and finite given the reasons that he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each individual lives a very different life. Depending on how hard one s life in reality is, there will be varying answers for the question that Nozick poses. If this question were to be asked to someone who lives a life in which they are comfortably situated in, they are more likely to decline the offer to go into the Experience Machine. However, in the event that someone lives a hard, painful life, such as one riddled with disease or poverty, they would most likely choose to spend time in the Experience Machine to escape the current state that they are in. For these individuals, it would not matter if they would feel unfulfilled during or after the simulation is over, as they would be willing to sacrifice their dignity to live a life of happiness, namely because they have relatively little to lose. • 12. Comparison Of The Star Spangled Banner, And The Star... The most topical controversial question that the nation is debating on is whether the song America, The Beautiful should replace The Star Spangled Banner as the National Anthem? The point of a National Anthem is to uplift spirits and many would agree that that is done with The Star Spangled Banner. The Star Spangled Banner should remain the National Anthem as it best represents America, and what this country stands for. The current National Anthem instills pride in the nation, alludes to the courage and power Americans have, and does not insinuate that all Americans believe in God. As The Star Spangled Banner is heard through the speakers of the football stadium, pride fills the hearts of all the Americans while they stand tall. The sole purpose that the song was written was to get America through a time of war and to instill a sense of strength and pride. The songs main focus is on the star spangled banner or the American flag. When people think of America they picture the red, white, and blue flag with the fifty stars. The American flag gives America something that represents them and that is why they wave the flag around proudly when given the chance. That very same pride that fellow Americans get when waving the flag is the same pride that Francis Scott Key felt as he seen the flag flying over Fort Henry. These following lines of The Star Spangled Banner is proof that Americans should be proud to live in America, What so proudly we hail d at the twilight s last ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The word silhouette is also in the poem and a silhouette is a black image. The words dark, darkness, and Ink Spot are also used. Ink Spot is the name of a thin black dog, so that is an example of imagery for black or darkness. The word light is used three times. Darkness and light is a recurring theme in the poem. It s saying that we need to take the time to stop and relax and enjoy life. I think the poet John Tagliabue is the speaker and he is giving advice about how to live your life. He thinks people should stop trying to pull yourself together for some clear meaning by taking life too seriously. He uses Van Gogh as an example of someone who was a great painter, but he wound up cutting off his own ear because of his depression and mental illness, Look what intensity did to poor great Van Gogh . Instead, he says we should be a dumb bell for a few minutes at least . We should let our minds rest and clear the stress. I think the line we don t want Sunday church bells ringing constantly is a symbol for people always having to be somewhere at a certain time, having too many commitments. I think the title of the poem means that if you don t go to extremes, then you won t be bored and you can still be a little intense if you want to be. You can still get really into the things you love, but don t let anything take over your life. The poem is written as a question and then one long sentence in two line stanzas with the second line indented until the final stanza which is three lines with the second and third line indented. Public Water Supply For Drinking And Agricultural Water Brazos River, the streams and lakes along the river are a major source of public water supply for drinking and agricultural uses for communities in around the Brazos River basin. Segment 1242 of Brazos River and the watersheds (Leon River watershed and Lower Brazos Little Brazos watershed) and their tributaries flowing into Brazos river in this segment are known to be impaired for bacteria, salts, nutrients and chlorophyll a (TCEQ, 2013). The flow of nutrients from rain water run off from land into Brazos River results in eutrophication of the river and algae (Chlorophyll a) bloom, thereby reducing the dissolved oxygen content in the water. This hypoxia in the water causes the death of fish and other living organisms in the river. This can ... By connecting stream flow rates model to pollutant loads, the relationship between pollutant transport and water quality can be determined. For this research, models of the fate and transport of the chloride and sulfate in Leon River was constructed. 4.3 Conceptual Model The conceptual model for this research is a network model which models the rate of flow of pollutant through a connected network of points in surface water. The water quality monitoring stations represent such points and serve as containers. From analysis of the water quality monitoring measurements of pollutants at each chosen station, it is observed that the concentration levels of pollutants tend to be high where it has not rained for a long time compared to where it rained the previous day or few days ago. This then can be interpreted to mean that the concentration of pollutant in surface water is proportional to the amount of water in the surface water body. Drought condition will concentrate the pollutants, while on the other hand rain events help to dilute the pollutes because of increase of water and also contribute to the flow of the pollutant from one point to the other ... Same with me, I would love to, but it is very rare that I have a full day off, and have people who want to go with. That why I chose to do my practice journey during my March Break, and told my friends they had to do it with me. So during the Tuesday (one of the three days I had off work) I packed a hiking bag, picked them up, grabbed Pita Pit for lunch, and drove up the mountain. The hike itself was beautiful. The trails were well kept and easy to follow. The weather was cold enough to keep cool, but not cold enough to freeze you. Nevertheless free markets do not always reach optimal output levels due to external market forces such as demographic factors or technological changes. The fact that a free market does not reaches optimal output is called market failure and leads to welfare loss (also called deadweight loss). In order to avoid market failure, government intervention, such as subsidies, is needed. The painting, Landscape with the Fall of Icarus, was painted by Pieter Breughel the Elder is one way express his thoughts about the myth. Another interpretation of the legend Icarus is a poem written by W.H. Auden called, Musée des Beaux Arts. This infamous fable was about a young adventurous boy falling to his death while escaping prison with his father, using waxed wings. This two main interpretations have the same theme in mind, humans tend to ignore situations if they are not applied to them. In the poem, Musée des Beaux Arts, the poem shows how people will neglect anything bad if it doesn t pertain to them. The speaker in the poem notices how everything turns away..., (line 14) from a dangerous, horrible or miserable situation. This connects to everyday life since once humans see something horrible, we would just sympathize and walk on. Critical Whiteness in Education Theoretical Framework of the Study As seen in the previous literature, empirical research in the last twenty years reveals the positive student outcomes associated to service learning. However, as Susan Jones (2002) argues, student s ability to actively participate in all aspects of their service learning experience depends on the intersection of the student s own background. . . , developmental readiness for such a learning experience, and the privileging conditions that put a college student in a community service organization as a volunteer in the first place (p. 13). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Frankenberg (1993) describes Whiteness as multidimensional: First, whiteness is a location of structural advantage, of race privilege. Second, it is a standpoint and place from which white people look at ourselves, at others, and at society. Although Whiteness has intangible systems of oppression, inequality, and unearned advantage that are not necessary seen, heard, or felt; nonetheless, they reproduce and support the idea of White as the ultimate form of racial identity. Butin (2005) examines the dynamics of Whiteness, and the extent to which student resistance is conceptualized as occurring due to dominant students rejection of the exposure and analysis of these same hidden and/or explicit social, cultural, and academic structures and practices of the school that privilege and sustains White, middle class norms (p. 117). In order to get supplies, the Swallow Man would create stories that make strangers feel bad for him or to make it seem like they have something in common. This is how their trust was gained. Only then would the Swallow Man mention anything they were looking for. Using this method, the Swallow Man could get food and supplies that strangers had no need of anyway. Another lesson of the Swallow Man was, Regret is like golden jewelry: at the proper moment it may prove immeasurably valuable, but it is rarely wise to advertise its presence to strangers (93). If a person is seen having regrets, then they may be taken advantage of. That is why it is imperative that even if a person does have regrets about their actions, they should not show that they do. Otherwise, the witness of the regret may see weakness and think that they can overpower that person. A similar lesson is, Transitions are periods of weakness (160). This transition is similar to regret. If a person is seen as being weak during transitions, they can be taken advantage of in the same way they can with regret. One of the most distinguishing characteristics that differentiates Homo sapiens from other species is the utilization of bipedal locomotion. Humans have established a unique way of moving from one location to another that is due to the evolution numerous anatomical developments over millions of years. Hominid bipedalism has evolved as a product of natural selection, a theory coined by Charles Darwin in 1859. This theory of evolution through the process of natural selection explains that some organisms are more reproductively fit than others. Therefore, these organisms are able to pass on their beneficial genes to the next generation. Essentially, traits that give certain organisms specific advantages, such as bipedalism in hominids, will be selected for in greater numbers, and therefore more individuals in the succeeding populations will display these beneficial traits (Darwin 1859). Darwin s theory can be used to help describe the central idea behind the fascinating transformation process from quadrupedalism to bipedalism. One of the most intriguing aspects surrounding this topic is the multiple different hypotheses for the evolution from quadrupedal gait to bipedal locomotion. Due to the fact that evidence suggests that the emergence of bipedalism occurred as early as 6 millions years ago, there have been many hyptotheses as to how the earliest hominids ... I will be exploring just that in this paper by evaluating the net benefit to a community and its lasting impact on the individual performing mandatory versus voluntary service. I was drawn to this topic after listening to Tovia Smith s podcast, Selfish Giving: Does It Count If You Get In Return?. Smith interviews many professionals on their opinion on service done for personal gain. In the article, Community Service, published by the Center for Justice and Reconciliation, they define mandatory community Service as restorative justice for offenders. The Center for Justice and Reconciliation leads a reader to believe that offenders doing community service is no different than when a high school student does it for a college application. I believe that the Center for Justice and Reconciliation is correct that offenders and high school students both partake in mandatory community service but for different reasons. High school students use service to get into college while offenders use service to make amends with the community they have harmed. Both Smith and the Center for Justice and Reconciliation agree that service is good but differ on what makes it efficient. Successful Aging Through Participatory Arts Programming... 80 is the new 40: Successful Aging through Participatory Arts Programming for Older Adults The United States is in the midst of a major demographic shift. People are living longer which means that the population of older adults, those sixty years and over, is growing. It is projected that by the year 2040, older adults will far outnumber school age children. Older adults are currently healthier and lead more productive lives than ever before, due in part to modern medicine and the new idea of seeing older people for their potential rather than their problems. This has prompted the concept of creative aging or successful aging. This positive view of aging is not new, only the terminology. Cicero, the Roman philosopher, is perhaps the first to introduce the idea of good aging in his essay, On Old Age which was penned in the year 44 BC. He wrote this essay in his early 60 s to show that old age is not a phase of decline and loss, and if approached properly becomes a time for positive change and productive functioning (Baltes Baltes, 1990). Over the last few decades the subject of successful aging has been the topic of a number of scholarly articles and books and has recently been tied to participatory arts and humanities programming through agencies that provide services to the older adult demographic.
