The Ambassador, By Ghazzi Alqussaibi
Translators are literary ambassadors, bringing a foreign work to the audience of the target language.
Choosing to translate His Excellency, The Ambassador, by Ghazzi AlQussaibi, was my primary pick
for its popularity among Arab readers around the world. Some critics claim that the novel is actually a
true story of an Arab politician, who was a close friend of the author. The author was actually a
political figure for most of his life, we find almost all of his novels were centered on the life and work
of politicians. When I started to translate this novel, I faced several obstacles ranging from linguistic,
cultural, and political challenges. The setting of the novel was not accurate to the real life. At the
beginning, Yusuf Alfalaki arrived at the Saint James Palace to meet the prime minister of the United
Kingdom at his office. Most people know that the office of the prime minister is actually at the 10
Downing Street, and there is no office for the prime minister at the Saint James Palace. Saint James
Palace is a historical building that is still occupied by some the royal family. So why would the author
give inaccurate historical account of places, even though he was once ambassador for long in the
United Kingdom? I thought of changing the whole setting to the actual headquarter of the government
office, but If I had to change the setting, then I would give wrong descriptions to the building and the
rooms inside as described thoroughly and sarcastically by the author.

Secular Humanism Essay
The fall 1986 Tennessee court decision on alleged secular humanism in Holt, Rinehart, Winston
textbooks illustrates the continuing controversy over that term.
The term secular humanism is used today to castigate a wide spectrum of our populous. The derision
with which the term is used suggests images of horrid, grotesque monsters. In reality, however, the
term merely consists of two sorely misunderstood words. In combination they suggest a virus, though
singly they are innocuous, if not healthy.
Secular means having to do with this world, or that which is temporal rather than spiritual. It suggests
something that is not specifically pertaining to religion, or that which is apart from God, although not
necessarily opposed to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
4, pp. 69 ff.), Humanism recognizes the value and dignity of man and makes him the measure of all
things or somehow takes human nature, its limits, or its interests as its theme.
Humanism describes the emphasis that was revived in the Renaissance when the Liberal Arts were
used to distinguish man from beasts. Through letters or scholarship was sought a rebirth of spirit and
spiritual freedom and justification of the claim to rational autonomy. In essence, the Renaissance was
a revival of the capacities and powers of the ancients.
The version of secular humanism expressed in the Humanist Manifesto (I 1933 and II 1973) is
actually naturalism, wherein there is no qualitative difference between man and animal, nor any
supernatural. Man supposedly evolved from lower forms of life and does not possess a soul.
According to secular humanism, man does have reason and will, which he should exercise to realize
human personality. The Humanist Manifestos also explicitly deny the sinful nature of man. This form
of secular humanism is actually a repudiation of true humanistic values. The secular perversion of
humanism is anthropocentrism (self expression/affirmation and human autonomy), moral relativism,
and atheism. A Christian world view contradicts this version of humanism.
A key distinction between naturalistic secular humanism and Christianity would be the view of life
after death. Secular humanism, being limited to this world, would not acknowledge

1984 Manipulation Of Love Essay
Edmund Burke once said, No passion so effectually robs the mind of all its powers of acting and
reasoning as hate. In other words, when one becomes enveloped in the emotion of hate, similarly to
that of love, it can alter one s thought and ability to make decisions. Love and hate are the two most
powerful emotions and are seen at the core of humanity; however, it is ironic that such strong
emotions can be so easily manipulated. George Orwell considers this idea in his novel 1984 and
reveals the relationship between love and hate in a dystopian society. Throughout the novel, it is clear
to see how one is able to gain love and power based on the manipulation of hate and fear; this can be
seen through the analysis of the Party s views of Emmanuel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

For instance, right before Winston is sent to Room 101, O Brian tells him: Never again will you be
capable of love, or friendship, or joy of living, or laughter, or curiosity, or courage, or integrity. You
will be hollow. We shall squeeze you empty, and then we shall fill you with ourselves (211). Here,
Winston is facing the consequences of his hatred for Big Brother. Ironically, the Party intends to
torture Winston until he feels nothing but love for big brother. Furthermore, just after Winston hears
that Oceania has won the war against Eurasia, he gazes up at the enormous face of Big Brother and
realizes: Forty years it had taken him to learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the dark
mustache...Two gin scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was alright, everything
was alright, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother
(245). By using torture to manipulate Winston s hatred for Big Brother, the Party is able purify his
brain, leaving nothing but sorrow and repent for what he had done. The only love he feels is that
towards Big Brother. Thus, giving the Party the satisfaction of power through the dictation of love and

Anne Hutchinson In The Massachusetts Bay Colony
The Massachusetts Bay Colony in the seventeenth century was incredibly intolerable towards any
religious ideology that opposed the Puritan authority and when clashed with the ideals of Anne
Hutchinson, the event forever marked the beginning of religious tolerance in the New England
Colonies. The Massachusetts Bay Colony, like many other towns in New England banished
individuals for such offenses as criticizing the church or government (Foner 71). As discussed in small
group lecture, the community of the Massachusetts Bay Colony had become so hardened in their
Puritan values that the sand that made up the community (the people) became glass. The values of the
community Anne Hutchinson, a spiritual advisor with her own interpretations of the Bible, held the
same view as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This idea went strictly against the authority, not because they were actually teaching a covenant of
works, but because Hutchinson was challenging their views whether they were true or not. Any
corruption in the authority seen by the community could disrupt the order of the society and cause
anarchy for the masses. John Winthrop, a puritan lawyer as wells as an authoritative figure in the
Massachusetts Bay Colony thought highly of Hutchinson, claiming she a woman of ready wit and
bold spirit (Foner 74). He felt no ill will towards her specifically, but once she went against the
authority and criticized the ministers, she broke away from the society, becoming a force pushing
against the glass and threatening to break its very foundations. Only three years after her arrival in
1634, Anne Hutchinson was put on trial for antinomianism and sedition. This trial became the contact
zone for Hutchinson s religious ideals and Winthrop s hardened

Essay On The Cost Of College Tuition
Harvard University is America s oldest higher education institution, modeled after England s Oxford
University. It originally graduated about 70% of the nation s clergymen, which has decreased to only
10% since the 19th century. Between 1636 and 1783, America charted nine colleges with only one in
the south (Kaufman). Most colleges of that time only enrolled about 100 students, and even fewer than
that actually graduated with degrees (Thelin, Edwards, Moyen). With the Supreme Courts passing on
the Dartmouth decision in 1819, which protected the colleges from government intervention. With the
colleges only being funded by student tuition and donors most shut down during this time (Thelin,
Edwards, Moyen). Starting around the 1920 s, more colleges were offering different degrees and more
diverse classes for their students. This lead to a more competitive job market, with more people
attending and graduating from college with a degree. During this time period, most jobs did not
require a college degree that most do nowadays. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

universities went up an astounding 4.4% which is about 3.8% above what it used to be ( College

dorms, more security, and better food. These demands are costing the students they are trying to

The Importance Of Education In Physical Education
The goal of this topic of What is education in Physical education is to try and explain what physical
educators are actually teaching students. For this project, we are focusing on cognitive and affective
learning styles within physical education. The article Kyla looked at was The Importance of the
Affective Domain in the Education of Physical Educators. The purpose of her article was to look at the
importance of affective goals and objectives related to the training of future physical educators
(Woodford, 1979). The affective domain looks at attitudes, feelings, interests and values of the
learned. It is best viewed as the way a person feels rather then how they think (Woodford, 1979). The
goal for physical educators should be to cover all areas of learning, which helps adjust a person s
value of physical education (Woodford, 1979).
6 goals as a physical educator might be to teach the courses in way that influences meaning of each
course. Another goal would be to create experiences that allow someone to pick and choose the values
they feel are most important in personal growth. A physical educator might try and create a learning
environment, which helps the students to develop values based on the level of teaching you are
interested in. An instructor may provide a base for understanding the value of physical education in
our society. An educator may focus on awareness and appreciation for the flexibility to move things
around in order to teach the social system

Van Gogh In The Yale Art Gallery
This painting depicts a regular café at night, with the dimensions of 72.4 x 92.1 cm (28 1/2 x 36 1/4
and an accession number of 1961.18.34 this panting stands out amongst other paintings because of
how the myriad of colors and hues mix that causes a clash in contrast. In the Yale Art Gallery, this oil
painting was in the American room among other American crafts. The thing that quickly caught my
eye on this painting was the way Van Gogh applied detail, creativity and the unorthodox use of colors.
The painting seemed to be dark and gloomy which was quite a unique quality about the painting. Van
Gogh is one of the most famous expressionist artists that people know and love today. This oil
painting on a canvas has been called one of Van Gogh s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It s almost as if the waiter is staring directly at the viewer of the painting. Subjectively, this painting
stood out to me and even more when I had seen it. This painting had a quite abnormal perspective in a
way that the café floor covers a large area of the canvas that Van Gogh painted on. It appeared as if the
artist that painted this piece achieved a high vantage point because it looks as if he was suspended in
the air while painting. Looking at the Clock in the Café it was almost 1am and this is why the gas
lighting was on, and it allowed the cafe to stay opened very late. As the viewer can observe from the
painting, the whole environment in the Night Cafe is not so happy and warm. The space itself seemed
so isolated and shadowy even the people in the painting had their heads hung almost as if they were
sad. Although Van Gogh used red which usually is a quite ecstatic color the addition of red, dark green
and dark orange just created an environment that wasn t so welcoming. Also, the use of Van Gogh s
brushstroke had also added another dark feeling to the painting. In this painting, it is very noticeable
that Van Gogh used harshly exaggerated brush strokes around the lights of the Cafe and also the use of
very bright shades of red and green were purposefully overly planned to portray his view of the night

A lot can be learned about rhetoric by looking at these two articles: 5 Charts That Show Sexism Is Still
Alive and Well in Gaming and The Integrity of Women and Gender Studies . One portrays the gaming
community as sexist and underrepresenting women (Kleeman) while the other condemns modern
feminism for treating women as victims and vilifying men (Frohlich). The first uses many logical
arguments that are used to bring emotion to the reader, and make them feel like certain things are
ethically wrong (Kleeman). The second uses a slightly different technique, since it is explicitly an
opinion piece (Frohlich). It leads the author to be trusted by the reader, and then presents the author s
opinions that are backed by logical arguments (Frohlich). It also causes the reader to experience
emotional and ethical feelings (Frohlich). 5 Charts That Show Sexism Is Still Alive and Well in

Reasons To Follow Immigration Laws
Recently President Trump, the 45th President of the United States, has acted to follow the current
Immigrations Laws, set out by the United States Congress, by ending former President Obams
Executive Action order which was designed to supersede the law and provide amnesty for illegal
immigrants. I support this position for several reasons, one being that we must have laws in the
country to follow, we must follow the order of the U.S. Constitution and we must not allow people to
unfairly cut in line because they have children. Our founding fathers set up many of our policies from
following the teachings of very smart philosophers of the past. One such philosopher, John Locke

The Importance Of Sovereignty In Canada
How is the arctic important to Canada and what does this entail? The north contains multiple
resources that are only continuing to grow with the melting of the northwest passage. With this
opening can this be used as an economic adventure in Canada, like the Suez Canal. Or, does the
opening of the passage turn this into a dispute of sovereignty between states? Canadians are known
around the world for being polite, apologetic and of course they re known as, We The North. Canada
has the second largest land mass in the world, at almost ten million kilometers squared, where three
and a half million kilometers, are that of the north(1). There is a wide variety of resources that any of
the other states would like to be a part of. Ranging from forestry, to fishery, natural water, and mining.

For that, what must be done by Canada to keep their sovereignty over their land, and not have other
states intrude and take the north as their own. If sovereignty is up for grabs, it needs to be discussed,
what is sovereignty, and how does a state have complete sovereignty over itself. Sovereignty is
defined as the supremacy of authority exercised by a state over its population and its territory. (4)
However, this can be done in many ways, and Canada is dealing with this in three different teirs
within the north. Canada will continue to have the north inhabited and have employment for those
living there. Secondly, it will endorse the north as a tourist area, for those of other countries to visit
and enjoy the natural beauties that are held there. Lastly, it will deploy its military in multiple ways.
The military will be used to hold operations within the northern territories, employ rangers
throughout, conduct fly past using the Air Force, and maintain bases at its most northern point on a
continual basis.

Literary Analysis Of Dulce Et Decorum Est
In early history, Soldiers going off to fight in war seemed brave and fearless. It was always seen as an
honor to serve in your country s army. However, in Dulce Et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen, through
the depictions of an actual battle, it is shown that those feelings are not actually present during war.
The genre of the poem is war. In fact is very much propaganda against war. After the events of World
War 1, Owen did not see the necessity of war in witnessing all the suffering it caused. The very title of
the poem Dulce et Decorum est can be translated as , It is sweet and proper to die for the fatherland. It
is now commonly referred to as the old lie because the saying is very old and commonly used but can
not really be seen as true. Though the title is titled as such, the meaning of the poem actually argues
against the phrase. In the poem, there is nothing fearless or glorious about the soldiers in the war. All
of the language that was in the poem has a very negative connotation. The words used like, beggars ,
lame , blind , deaf , clumsy, helpless ,and more show that the men are very discombobulated and are in
fact suffering. There is a lot of death and chaos occurring. The phrase is referred to as the old lie
because how can one see the horrors of war and still tell people and young children that it is honorable
and glorious to fight and die for one s country. At first glance. one would assume that Owen utilizes
Iambic Pentameter in his poem. However, there is no

Essay on Modern Piracy With A Breif History
Piracy is usually determined as a seizure of property (ship, airplane or software) that holds no
commission from the owner ( Piracy 1). It is mostly linked to the dirty, bearded men that sailed the
seven seas and robed merchant ships or ships that carried a valuable cargo. This however, was not the
case in the late eighties and is definitely not the case today in the nineties. Now software pirates copy
software without the permission of the company for their own personal benefits. Since piracy
interrupts trade between nations it has been considered to be an offense against international law (
Piracy 1). While the pirates in the medieval age roamed for plunder on the high seas, pirate radio and
television stations broadcast, unauthorized ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was not the lack of plunder because there were still many merchant ships sailing between nations
with valuable cargo. Also, the conditions in merchant and navy ships were as severe as before so there
was still a great reason to turn to piracy. It was called the golden age because at this time there were
more pirates (not to mention the number of the well know pirates) than ever before and their amount
of plunder was far greater than any other period in history. From this time period the original term
piracy got its name and fame.
This statement been said, Piracy could never be completely gotten rid of. This is a very true statement.
It did take a long time, now pirates have set sail again and this time in cyberspace (The Internet). Their
vessels are no longer ships filled with gunpowder and cannons, but desktop and laptop computers.
Software piracy has existed as long as software itself, but it has not had a notable effect before the
late1980 s. The pirating of software just got easier as hardware became more advanced. The
development of the modem has allowed the computer to transmit and receive data. Due to this
technological advancement pirates (modern term Hackers) have been able to put pirated software on
webpages and websites around cyberspace. These webpages and websites offer the newest and most
popular games and programs available for downloading. The downloading and these pages and sites

Dewey s Rational Problem Solving Process
When it comes to conflict in the workplace, it is not a question of if it will occur, but rather a question
of when. There is also a question of how well managers will deal with this conflict and if it will
become constructive or destructive (Hynes, 2010, p. 237). John Dewey recommends using a 6 stage
process that reasonable individuals can use to solve a problem (Hynes, 2010, p. 311). Dewey
recommends first defining a problem, analyzing a problem and then brainstorming possible answers to
the problem (Hynes, 2010, p. 311). He then recommends identifying the parameters of what must
occur to eliminate a problem, choosing the best solution from identified options and then
implementing the chosen solution (Hynes, 2010, p. 311).
Dewey s Rational Problem Solving Process The conflict described in Case 10 1 is a classic case of a
non managerial employee being pulled in multiple directions by managerial employees. Rankin, a non
managerial employee in the Credit department, often helps Sims, the manager of Accounting (Hynes,
2010, p. 238). However, sales have been increasing so Rankin has not been able to help Sims as often
as she previously had been because she has also needed to assist the Sales department (Hynes, 2010,
p. 238). As a result, Sims approached Martinez, the manager of Sales, and told him that she needed
Rankin s assistance more than he needed her help in assisting the Sales department (Hynes, 2010, p.
238). Basically, a conflict over a resource ensued

When looking at Donna s story, one must analyze how the child welfare system and government failed
to help Donna as a child and young adult. In this part of the paper, I will also be analyzing her story
from an Aboriginal perspective. As mentioned previously, Donna might have social work involvement
in her life because someone has reported her, as a parent, to the government. In this case, the rights of
Donna are secondary to the rights of her children, and a social worker must work in the best interest of
the children as mandated by legislation. From a child protection stance, the social worker, on limited

Donna and understood the plight of Aboriginal peoples, but did not have the vocabulary of methods of

This literary submission will take on a systematic, convergent approach in focusing on five separate
articles regarding green consumerism. The five peer reviewed articles which have been selected for
this paper have been placed in the appendix of this submission in the order in which they appear in the
bibliography.
A key point which is continuously brought up within each article is that environmental consumerism is

The article also identifies the green consumer as often very skeptical of green advertising in general,
which results in their own adoptive means of conducting alternative research so that they are well
informed prior to making a purchase (Shrum et. Al, 1995). As well, Auger s article provided
supporting evidence to this point by restating that active information seekers were often more apt to
adopt socially ethical products (Auger et al, 2003).
Several types of research methods were used to reach these conclusions, including the use of primary
data collected through ethical disposition surveys and choice experiment surveys (Auger et al, 2003).
An extensive amount of secondary research was also pulled together, with some data sets being
analyzed to determine the conclusive results (Shrum et. Al, 1995). However, it is noted within each
paper that there are gaps which exist within each article s research design. For example, some surveys
were only targeted at a certain demographics, leading to a relatively homogeneous study groups
(Haytko and Matulich, 2007), while other data sets did not reflect the general population, as some
secondary data either over represented or underrepresented certain populations, resulting in an
incomprehensive analysis of data (Shrum et. Al, 1995).
As a result, gaps can be observed in both the research questions conducted within these articles, as

The Sacred Space And Sacred Spaces Forged By The Divine
Since their creation, humans have sought to find meaning from the mundane existence of mortality.
This quest for answers has motivated many to seek out the divine and sacred spaces forged by the
divine. Biblical scholar and historian Mircea Eliade argues that, man becomes aware of the sacred
because it manifests itself [and] to designate the act of manifestations of the sacred [is the] proposed
term hierophany (Eliade 1959: 11). In other words, a hierophany exists when the divine chooses to
reveal himself, by defining a space or object as sacred through the divine s presence. After a
hierophany occurs, the chosen object or space is deemed an axis mundi. Eliade defines axis mundi as,
a universal pillar which at once connects and supports heaven and earth and whose base is fixed in the
world below (Eliade 1959: 36). Using a comparative analysis of biblical texts and scholarly articles,
this paper will discuss how a sacred space, specifically Jerusalem, manifests itself through God s
choosing. Therefore Jerusalem is the holy dwelling place of the divine, because God chose it through
his application of multiple hierophanies and his establishment of axes mundi within the city s walls.
Jerusalem as a sacred dwelling place is reflected though its similarities to the Garden of Eden, where
God created the first human beings on earth. In Genesis 2, God had planted a garden in the east, [and]
a river watering the garden flowed from Eden, there it was separated into four

This could be done using the primary photographs and interviews preserved from these nights of
rioting, as well as being supplemented by the commentary found within secondary reports of the
activities. Second, the actual riots would be addressed through interviews from both the LGBTQ
perspective and the view of the police force, bystanders, bar workers, as well as the individual(s)
responsible for allowing the raid. To address the second, more media involved, aspect of my research
question, I would analyze primary sources such as recordings, photographs, captions from
newspapers, headlines, and news broadcasted onto nationally available channels. Additional
Information: I would need to supply general definitions of the LGBTQ community, as well as show
that there was a significant population of these individuals living around the Stonewall Inn and
benefitting from its progressive modes of operation. Once that community has been established, I
would then take the time to explain the past tensions that members of the LGBTQ community have
faced due to unnecessary violence at the hands of law enforcement individuals, in particular how those

The remarkable differences between the trait and behavioural theory are that the last one emphasises
on both the accomplishment of the task as the main indications for the leader success, and employees
satisfaction,
Situational leadership: According to this theory, the effectiveness of the leader is significantly
correlated with situational factors which restrict the performance of the leader positively or negatively.
In other words, the efficiency of leader s skills or traits are determined by the situation in which
leaders exercise leadership (Dessler,1976), These factors are:
Follower s contributions.
The availability and the utilization of the resources.
However, creating the harmonisation and the collaboration between the situational factors and the
leader are essential to determine leader s effectiveness.
Contingency Theories: basically, the assumption of this theory, that the behaviour of the leader can not
be standardised, instead, the leader should consider situational factors. The success of the leader in this
theory is measured by the ability of leader to adopt such a style to achieve certain task with a
consideration to the followers.
This theory was the beginning of new view of leadership; based on this assumption other contingency
theories were emerged such as, Fiedler s concept of situational favourability (1967), which

The Pros * You can be in touch with your children, and know their whereabouts. (The Pew study
noted that 48 percent of parents use the phone to monitor their child s location.) * Your kids can reach
you in the event of an emergency, and vice versa. * If in danger, your children can reach the
authorities or a medical provider. * Phones can be silenced during class or study periods, and active
only in appropriate places. * Cell phones create a convenience that was previously unavailable. With
cell phones, you can easily reach your kids for any reason: to ask them questions, change plans, or to
simply say hello.

According to one Swedish study, the risk of acoustic neuroma (a tumor formation
on the nerve near the ear) was greater on the side of the head that the cell phone was held.[13] 3.
Using a cell phone while driving, even with a hands free device, is unsafe and can make
accidents more likely. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
estimates that driving distractions, including the use of cell phones, contribute to 25% of
all traffic crashes. [14] 4. The radio frequency (RF) emissions from cell phones have been shown to
damage
genetic material in blood cells which is a common precursor to cancer. [15] 5. Driving while talking
on a cell phone is as dangerous as driving drunk. According to
researchers at the University of Utah people who drive while talking on their cell phones
are as impaired as drunk drivers with a blood alcohol level of 0.08%. [16] 6. Children are at an
increased risk for adverse health effects from cell phone radiation. One
study has shown that children under the age of eight absorb twice the amount of radiation
into their brain tissue as adults due to their lower skull thickness. [17] 7. The radiofrequency radiation
from cell phones can damage the DNA in sperm. Cell
phone storage in front pockets has been linked to poor fertility and an increased chance of
miscarriage and childhood cancer. According to the Cleveland Clinic Center for

The Question Of Being Is The Darkest Of All Philosophy
The question of being is the darkest in all philosophy. So concluded William James in thinking about
that most basic of riddles: how did something come from nothing? The question infuriates, James
realized, because it demands an explanation while denying the very possibility of explanation. From
nothing to being there is no logical bridge, he wrote. In science, explanations are built of cause and
effect. But if nothing is truly nothing, it lacks the power to cause. It s not simply that we can t find the
right explanation it s that explanation itselffails in the face of nothing. This failure hits us where it
hurts. We are a narrative species. Our most basic understanding comes through stories, and how
something came from nothing is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ancient Greeks suggested that empty space is filled with substance a plenum, an ether. Aristotle
conceived of the ether as an unchanging fifth element, more perfect and heavenly in its invariance
than earth, air, fire, or water. True nothingness was at odds with Aristotle s physics, which said that
bodies rise up or fall down as dictated by their rightful place in the natural order of things.
Nothingness, however, would be perfectly symmetric it would look the same from every angle
rendering absolute spatial directions like up and down utterly meaningless. An ether, Aristotle figured,
could serve as a kind of cosmic compass, an ultimate reference frame against which all motion could
be measured. For those who abhorred a vacuum, the ether banished every last trace of it. The ancient
ether stuck around for millennia until it was re imagined in the late 19th century by physicists like
James Clerk Maxwell, who discovered that light behaves as a wave that always travels at a particular
speed. What was waving, and speed relative to what? The ether was a handy answer, providing both a
medium for light waves to travel through, and, as Aristotle originally imagined, a reference frame
against which all

A Knight s Tale Identity
Why fit in when you are born to stand out Dr. Seuss. Who are we really? Is there a predestined role we
all play in this world? Or do we make up our fates as we trudge along the winding road of life? How
do we know if who we are is who we are supposed to be? It is hard to tell if the life we are living it the
one we should be, but it is even harder to understand if we are the person we are meant to be. In the
movie, A Knight s Tale, the main character William Thatcher, also known as Ulrich von Liechtenstein,
teaches us it is not where you come from that defines you, it is how you act and the deeds you do to
make it to where you are. This essay will discuss how as the movie progresses, William develops his
identity as well as the overall ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Would you do anything to fulfill the dream you have for yourself? The dream that made you into the
person you were meant to be? Would you put yourself at risk for this dream? William from the very
beginning showed up that if you truly want to be something you have to give everything for it. In
medieval times, Jousting, sword play, and other events were not for everyone. Peasants were not
allowed to participate in such events. Nobleman, knights and, on occasion, royally were the only
allowed to participate. If you were not in one of these mentioned categories, and you injured or even
killed one who as associated in one, you would be at risk to be put in the stocks, tortured and even put
to death. William, who is a peasant, takes up the identity of his lord who as died, of what is assumed is
dysentery, in order to win the purse to purchase food for himself and his companions to survive. After
competing in the match and winning, William decides to take up the persona of Ulrich von
Liechtenstein of Gelderland. Later in the movie it is explained that has a child, William s dream was to
become a knight, a task that no one in his position has ever accomplish. After competing in a few
tournaments and qualifying for the championships. One of the nobleman discover who he is after
following him to his childhood home in the slums of Cheapside. When threatened with imprisonment,

The Developments And Learning I Experienced During Buxton...
The objective of writing this reflective essay is to assess the developments and learning I experienced
during Buxton residential; pertaining to working as a group and individually with a view of improving
my shortcomings. I was assessed and given feedback by the supervisor in the areas I was not
performing better and guided throughout the residential to accomplish better individually as well as in
a group.
I am reviewing the work I performed in the group under the current research and methods to present
the learning I gained from the feedback and guidance provided by the supervisors. (Tuckman, Belbin,
Kolb and other researcher s work is used).
However, this essay will mainly focus on five main points which are team working, leadership, ...

(Tuckman, 1965, pp 396)
In the last activities I performed, I did my part for the team and did efforts for the team as a whole, not
completely for personal achievement. I did understand the point of working as a team not as an
individual working separately than the team working as one. (Tuckman, 1965, pp 396)
Leadership:
I was given the opportunity to lead in single activity which required to guide the team members based
on communication. I did planned and guided my members and explain them how we will work in that
activity according to my mindset and priorities. The problem I experienced was that regardless of the
understanding between group members, I was still not able to guide my colleagues to perform as I
expected. The main reason for me not delivering what I expected was that I didn t accounted for other
member s thoughts and priorities. (Beth Charles, 2011, pp 463)
In some of the other activities, I was working as a member however, I have to take control of the
situation as I built a general understanding of the group work and do take leadership role in the group
whenever required. (Belbin, 2010, pp 65)(Henny, 2008, pp501)
Communication Skills:
For me at the first it was a disaster in terms of performing in the team. The reason for that was the
absence of understanding and communication skills in me. (Tuckman, 1965, pp

Burgermeister s Daughter Essay
Burgermeister s Daughter
What was the predominant image of women and women s place in medieval society? Actual historical
events, such as the scandal and subsequent litigation revolving around Anna Buschler which Steven
Ozment detail s in the Burgermeisters Daughter, suggests something off a compromise between these
two literary extremes. It is easy to say that life in the sixteenth century was surely no utopia for
women but at least they had some rights.
Anna was the daughter of Hermann Buschler, a prominent citizen who had even been the
burgermeister of the German town of Schwabisch Hall, within the Holy Roman Empire. When she
was young, Anna had simultaneous affairs with a young local nobleman, Erasmus Schenk of Limpurg,
and a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Anna s story shows that women did have some rights, and that they also had, at least in this case, the
ability to defend those rights within legal institutions. Even more important is evidence of public
opinion, instead of siding against Anna as an unfit daughter causing trouble for her family Hall s
citizens actually sided with Anna against her father. In this, both daughter s obedience to father and
woman s obedience to man were turned on their heads, revealing that regardless of religious doctrines
of male authority, life among the people was much more complex.
While not a complete victory for Anna, the battle for her inheritance was not a complete loss either.
She capably fought her father and even the entire city council of Hall. This was no easy task because
she couldn t represent herself in court. It was one of the first times where the moral code of Germany
was overturned. She contested her father and went against the respect you re supposed to have. Her
story was not a complete positive statement of female dominance, because that certainly was not the
case, an ugly thirty year court battle doesn t indicate disempowerment either, even though her battle
didn t personally benefit her to the fullest, it was a large step for women.
In the sixteenth century the normative relations between father and child, and among

22 Short Rimfire Cartridge
The .22 caliber small diameter projectile was one of the first small diameter projectiles introduced and
has been developed and adapted for over a century becoming the most popular small bore caliber in
history. While most shooters automatically jump to .22 LR when they hear .22 caliber, however there
are hundreds of variations of the .22 caliber loadings and cartridges. The .22 Short rimfire cartridge is
one of the longest running .22 caliber cartridges still in production, it was introduced in 1857 for use
in a Smith Wesson revolver1. This development went on to lead to the .22 long, .22 extra long and a
whole lineage of .22 caliber rimfire cartridges all the way to the .22 WMR in 1959, another very
popular .22 rimfire design that has recently been giving the .22LR a run for its money. The .22 caliber
bullet continued on to be developed into centerfire ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While not being identical they are for the most part interchangeable in most modern platforms. The
powder charge and pressure are however different due to small differences in the casing thickness.2
This round was officially adopted by the US military in the Vietnam War for use in the M16 rifle. Its
military adoption led to its surge in popularity, though its reception was a hard one due to
misconceptions about it ability to kill. The .22 is still being used and developed to this day. From new
innovations like the 5.7x28mm or the .22 TCM the .22 diameter bullet is being used in more platforms
and being adapted all the time. The most popular selling rifle in my store is obviously the AR 15
chambered in .223/5.56, and oddly enough one of my most sought after guns is also a .22 caliber the
FNH FiveSeven Pistol. Personally I have been interested in squiring the .22 TCM conversion slides
for Glocks and selling them paired with assembled Glock frames. To this day .22 has maintained
popularity in the united states from rimfire to centerfire and the popularity may wane but for the most

Endangered Elephant Essay
Asian elephants are an endangered animal. Their population is decreasing very quickly. In 2000, there
were more than 100,000 elephants left, but now, in 2017, there are only 35,000 to 40,000 left. Some of
the problems Asian elephants face is habitat loss, ivory poaching and the kidnapping of young
elephants. Luckily, there are many ways you can help to stop them from going extinct, including
donating to places like the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, encouraging selective logging, shutting
down ivory markets, donating and shunning places that advertise the chance to see a baby elephant.
The main problem causing Asian elephants to be endangered is habitat loss. People have been cutting
down the tropical forests where the elephants used to live and are building houses in the valleys and
plains. In fact, about 20% of all humans live close to the current habitat of the Asian elephant. The
elephants move to the hills and the remains of the forests, but even then they are still at risk. Because
the elephants are forced into smaller areas, inbreeding may occur. The elephants are unable to mix
with other herds, which causes their genetic material to be too closely related to that of other elephants
in their herd. The migrations of the elephants have also been disrupted by habitat loss. Dams, coffee
and tea plantations, railway lines, and roads break up the routes the elephants once used on their
seasonal migration. Selective logging is one solution to habitat loss. Selective logging

he did not hear her, in his mind he believe this could make the illness go away by ignoring it.

  • 2. The Ambassador, By Ghazzi Alqussaibi Translators are literary ambassadors, bringing a foreign work to the audience of the target language. Choosing to translate His Excellency, The Ambassador, by Ghazzi AlQussaibi, was my primary pick for its popularity among Arab readers around the world. Some critics claim that the novel is actually a true story of an Arab politician, who was a close friend of the author. The author was actually a political figure for most of his life, we find almost all of his novels were centered on the life and work of politicians. When I started to translate this novel, I faced several obstacles ranging from linguistic, cultural, and political challenges. The setting of the novel was not accurate to the real life. At the beginning, Yusuf Alfalaki arrived at the Saint James Palace to meet the prime minister of the United Kingdom at his office. Most people know that the office of the prime minister is actually at the 10 Downing Street, and there is no office for the prime minister at the Saint James Palace. Saint James Palace is a historical building that is still occupied by some the royal family. So why would the author give inaccurate historical account of places, even though he was once ambassador for long in the United Kingdom? I thought of changing the whole setting to the actual headquarter of the government office, but If I had to change the setting, then I would give wrong descriptions to the building and the rooms inside as described thoroughly and sarcastically by the author. ... • 3. Secular Humanism Essay The fall 1986 Tennessee court decision on alleged secular humanism in Holt, Rinehart, Winston textbooks illustrates the continuing controversy over that term. The term secular humanism is used today to castigate a wide spectrum of our populous. The derision with which the term is used suggests images of horrid, grotesque monsters. In reality, however, the term merely consists of two sorely misunderstood words. In combination they suggest a virus, though singly they are innocuous, if not healthy. Secular means having to do with this world, or that which is temporal rather than spiritual. It suggests something that is not specifically pertaining to religion, or that which is apart from God, although not necessarily opposed to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 4, pp. 69 ff.), Humanism recognizes the value and dignity of man and makes him the measure of all things or somehow takes human nature, its limits, or its interests as its theme. Humanism describes the emphasis that was revived in the Renaissance when the Liberal Arts were used to distinguish man from beasts. Through letters or scholarship was sought a rebirth of spirit and spiritual freedom and justification of the claim to rational autonomy. In essence, the Renaissance was a revival of the capacities and powers of the ancients. The version of secular humanism expressed in the Humanist Manifesto (I 1933 and II 1973) is actually naturalism, wherein there is no qualitative difference between man and animal, nor any supernatural. Man supposedly evolved from lower forms of life and does not possess a soul. According to secular humanism, man does have reason and will, which he should exercise to realize human personality. The Humanist Manifestos also explicitly deny the sinful nature of man. This form of secular humanism is actually a repudiation of true humanistic values. The secular perversion of humanism is anthropocentrism (self expression/affirmation and human autonomy), moral relativism, and atheism. A Christian world view contradicts this version of humanism. A key distinction between naturalistic secular humanism and Christianity would be the view of life after death. Secular humanism, being limited to this world, would not acknowledge ... • 4. 1984 Manipulation Of Love Essay Edmund Burke once said, No passion so effectually robs the mind of all its powers of acting and reasoning as hate. In other words, when one becomes enveloped in the emotion of hate, similarly to that of love, it can alter one s thought and ability to make decisions. Love and hate are the two most powerful emotions and are seen at the core of humanity; however, it is ironic that such strong emotions can be so easily manipulated. George Orwell considers this idea in his novel 1984 and reveals the relationship between love and hate in a dystopian society. Throughout the novel, it is clear to see how one is able to gain love and power based on the manipulation of hate and fear; this can be seen through the analysis of the Party s views of Emmanuel ... For instance, right before Winston is sent to Room 101, O Brian tells him: Never again will you be capable of love, or friendship, or joy of living, or laughter, or curiosity, or courage, or integrity. You will be hollow. We shall squeeze you empty, and then we shall fill you with ourselves (211). Here, Winston is facing the consequences of his hatred for Big Brother. Ironically, the Party intends to torture Winston until he feels nothing but love for big brother. Furthermore, just after Winston hears that Oceania has won the war against Eurasia, he gazes up at the enormous face of Big Brother and realizes: Forty years it had taken him to learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the dark mustache...Two gin scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was alright, everything was alright, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother (245). By using torture to manipulate Winston s hatred for Big Brother, the Party is able purify his brain, leaving nothing but sorrow and repent for what he had done. The only love he feels is that towards Big Brother. Thus, giving the Party the satisfaction of power through the dictation of love and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Anne Hutchinson In The Massachusetts Bay Colony The Massachusetts Bay Colony in the seventeenth century was incredibly intolerable towards any religious ideology that opposed the Puritan authority and when clashed with the ideals of Anne Hutchinson, the event forever marked the beginning of religious tolerance in the New England Colonies. The Massachusetts Bay Colony, like many other towns in New England banished individuals for such offenses as criticizing the church or government (Foner 71). As discussed in small group lecture, the community of the Massachusetts Bay Colony had become so hardened in their Puritan values that the sand that made up the community (the people) became glass. The values of the community Anne Hutchinson, a spiritual advisor with her own interpretations of the Bible, held the same view as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This idea went strictly against the authority, not because they were actually teaching a covenant of works, but because Hutchinson was challenging their views whether they were true or not. Any corruption in the authority seen by the community could disrupt the order of the society and cause anarchy for the masses. John Winthrop, a puritan lawyer as wells as an authoritative figure in the Massachusetts Bay Colony thought highly of Hutchinson, claiming she a woman of ready wit and bold spirit (Foner 74). He felt no ill will towards her specifically, but once she went against the authority and criticized the ministers, she broke away from the society, becoming a force pushing against the glass and threatening to break its very foundations. Only three years after her arrival in 1634, Anne Hutchinson was put on trial for antinomianism and sedition. This trial became the contact zone for Hutchinson s religious ideals and Winthrop s hardened ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Essay On The Cost Of College Tuition Harvard University is America s oldest higher education institution, modeled after England s Oxford University. It originally graduated about 70% of the nation s clergymen, which has decreased to only 10% since the 19th century. Between 1636 and 1783, America charted nine colleges with only one in the south (Kaufman). Most colleges of that time only enrolled about 100 students, and even fewer than that actually graduated with degrees (Thelin, Edwards, Moyen). With the Supreme Courts passing on the Dartmouth decision in 1819, which protected the colleges from government intervention. With the colleges only being funded by student tuition and donors most shut down during this time (Thelin, Edwards, Moyen). Starting around the 1920 s, more colleges were offering different degrees and more diverse classes for their students. This lead to a more competitive job market, with more people attending and graduating from college with a degree. • 7. The Importance Of Education In Physical Education The goal of this topic of What is education in Physical education is to try and explain what physical educators are actually teaching students. For this project, we are focusing on cognitive and affective learning styles within physical education. The article Kyla looked at was The Importance of the Affective Domain in the Education of Physical Educators. The purpose of her article was to look at the importance of affective goals and objectives related to the training of future physical educators (Woodford, 1979). The affective domain looks at attitudes, feelings, interests and values of the learned. It is best viewed as the way a person feels rather then how they think (Woodford, 1979). The goal for physical educators should be to cover all areas of learning, which helps adjust a person s value of physical education (Woodford, 1979). 6 goals as a physical educator might be to teach the courses in way that influences meaning of each course. Another goal would be to create experiences that allow someone to pick and choose the values they feel are most important in personal growth. A physical educator might try and create a learning environment, which helps the students to develop values based on the level of teaching you are interested in. An instructor may provide a base for understanding the value of physical education in our society. An educator may focus on awareness and appreciation for the flexibility to move things around in order to teach the social system ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Van Gogh In The Yale Art Gallery This painting depicts a regular café at night, with the dimensions of 72.4 x 92.1 cm (28 1/2 x 36 1/4 and an accession number of 1961.18.34 this panting stands out amongst other paintings because of how the myriad of colors and hues mix that causes a clash in contrast. In the Yale Art Gallery, this oil painting was in the American room among other American crafts. The thing that quickly caught my eye on this painting was the way Van Gogh applied detail, creativity and the unorthodox use of colors. The painting seemed to be dark and gloomy which was quite a unique quality about the painting. Van Gogh is one of the most famous expressionist artists that people know and love today. This oil painting on a canvas has been called one of Van Gogh s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It s almost as if the waiter is staring directly at the viewer of the painting. Subjectively, this painting stood out to me and even more when I had seen it. This painting had a quite abnormal perspective in a way that the café floor covers a large area of the canvas that Van Gogh painted on. It appeared as if the artist that painted this piece achieved a high vantage point because it looks as if he was suspended in the air while painting. Looking at the Clock in the Café it was almost 1am and this is why the gas lighting was on, and it allowed the cafe to stay opened very late. As the viewer can observe from the painting, the whole environment in the Night Cafe is not so happy and warm. The space itself seemed so isolated and shadowy even the people in the painting had their heads hung almost as if they were sad. Although Van Gogh used red which usually is a quite ecstatic color the addition of red, dark green and dark orange just created an environment that wasn t so welcoming. Also, the use of Van Gogh s brushstroke had also added another dark feeling to the painting. In this painting, it is very noticeable that Van Gogh used harshly exaggerated brush strokes around the lights of the Cafe and also the use of very bright shades of red and green were purposefully overly planned to portray his view of the night ... A lot can be learned about rhetoric by looking at these two articles: 5 Charts That Show Sexism Is Still Alive and Well in Gaming and The Integrity of Women and Gender Studies . One portrays the gaming community as sexist and underrepresenting women (Kleeman) while the other condemns modern feminism for treating women as victims and vilifying men (Frohlich). The first uses many logical arguments that are used to bring emotion to the reader, and make them feel like certain things are ethically wrong (Kleeman). The second uses a slightly different technique, since it is explicitly an opinion piece (Frohlich). It leads the author to be trusted by the reader, and then presents the author s opinions that are backed by logical arguments (Frohlich). It also causes the reader to experience emotional and ethical feelings (Frohlich). 5 Charts That Show Sexism Is Still Alive and Well in Gaming This text is published by a media company called Mic. I support this position for several reasons, one being that we must have laws in the country to follow, we must follow the order of the U.S. Constitution and we must not allow people to unfairly cut in line because they have children. Our founding fathers set up many of our policies from following the teachings of very smart philosophers of the past. The north contains multiple resources that are only continuing to grow with the melting of the northwest passage. With this opening can this be used as an economic adventure in Canada, like the Suez Canal. Or, does the opening of the passage turn this into a dispute of sovereignty between states? Sovereignty is defined as the supremacy of authority exercised by a state over its population and its territory. • 14. Literary Analysis Of Dulce Et Decorum Est In early history, Soldiers going off to fight in war seemed brave and fearless. It was always seen as an honor to serve in your country s army. However, in Dulce Et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen, through the depictions of an actual battle, it is shown that those feelings are not actually present during war. The genre of the poem is war. In fact is very much propaganda against war. After the events of World War 1, Owen did not see the necessity of war in witnessing all the suffering it caused. The very title of the poem Dulce et Decorum est can be translated as , It is sweet and proper to die for the fatherland. It is now commonly referred to as the old lie because the saying is very old and commonly used but can not really be seen as true. Though the title is titled as such, the meaning of the poem actually argues against the phrase. In the poem, there is nothing fearless or glorious about the soldiers in the war. All of the language that was in the poem has a very negative connotation. The words used like, beggars , lame , blind , deaf , clumsy, helpless ,and more show that the men are very discombobulated and are in fact suffering. There is a lot of death and chaos occurring. The phrase is referred to as the old lie because how can one see the horrors of war and still tell people and young children that it is honorable and glorious to fight and die for one s country. At first glance. one would assume that Owen utilizes Iambic Pentameter in his poem. However, there is no ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Essay on Modern Piracy With A Breif History Piracy is usually determined as a seizure of property (ship, airplane or software) that holds no commission from the owner ( Piracy 1). It is mostly linked to the dirty, bearded men that sailed the seven seas and robed merchant ships or ships that carried a valuable cargo. This however, was not the case in the late eighties and is definitely not the case today in the nineties. Now software pirates copy software without the permission of the company for their own personal benefits. It was not the lack of plunder because there were still many merchant ships sailing between nations with valuable cargo. Also, the conditions in merchant and navy ships were as severe as before so there was still a great reason to turn to piracy. It was called the golden age because at this time there were more pirates (not to mention the number of the well know pirates) than ever before and their amount of plunder was far greater than any other period in history. From this time period the original term piracy got its name and fame. This statement been said, Piracy could never be completely gotten rid of. This is a very true statement. It did take a long time, now pirates have set sail again and this time in cyberspace (The Internet). Their vessels are no longer ships filled with gunpowder and cannons, but desktop and laptop computers. Software piracy has existed as long as software itself, but it has not had a notable effect before the late1980 s. The pirating of software just got easier as hardware became more advanced. The development of the modem has allowed the computer to transmit and receive data. • 16. Dewey s Rational Problem Solving Process When it comes to conflict in the workplace, it is not a question of if it will occur, but rather a question of when. There is also a question of how well managers will deal with this conflict and if it will become constructive or destructive (Hynes, 2010, p. 237). John Dewey recommends using a 6 stage process that reasonable individuals can use to solve a problem (Hynes, 2010, p. 311). Dewey recommends first defining a problem, analyzing a problem and then brainstorming possible answers to the problem (Hynes, 2010, p. 311). He then recommends identifying the parameters of what must occur to eliminate a problem, choosing the best solution from identified options and then implementing the chosen solution (Hynes, 2010, p. 311). Dewey s Rational Problem Solving Process The conflict described in Case 10 1 is a classic case of a non managerial employee being pulled in multiple directions by managerial employees. Rankin, a non managerial employee in the Credit department, often helps Sims, the manager of Accounting (Hynes, 2010, p. 238). However, sales have been increasing so Rankin has not been able to help Sims as often as she previously had been because she has also needed to assist the Sales department (Hynes, 2010, p. 238). As a result, Sims approached Martinez, the manager of Sales, and told him that she needed Rankin s assistance more than he needed her help in assisting the Sales department (Hynes, 2010, p. 238). When looking at Donna s story, one must analyze how the child welfare system and government failed to help Donna as a child and young adult. In this part of the paper, I will also be analyzing her story from an Aboriginal perspective. As mentioned previously, Donna might have social work involvement in her life because someone has reported her, as a parent, to the government. In this case, the rights of Donna are secondary to the rights of her children, and a social worker must work in the best interest of the children as mandated by legislation. The first time I watched this, I felt compassion for Donna and understood the plight of Aboriginal peoples, but did not have the vocabulary of methods of articulating and making sense of what I saw. I have really enjoyed this class because it has taken all of the information I have studied in other classes and reanalyzed it with a social work lens, making it very practicum for the next stages of my career. I now am able to talk about the similarities and differences of approaches and where it is best to apply aspects of each. Particularly, I feel drawn to an anti oppressive, structural approach that takes the whole person into consideration but also attempts to create larger social change. As I enter practice, Donna s Story has helped me keep in mind that my actions as a social worker will have great impacts on people and communities and I need to be aware of my role, especially when in a position of social control. Moreover, Donna herself has really impacted me as well; I am inspired to look for strengths and resiliency in my future clients and to be able to learn from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Several types of research methods were used to reach these conclusions, including the use of primary data collected through ethical disposition surveys and choice experiment surveys (Auger et al, 2003). An extensive amount of secondary research was also pulled together, with some data sets being analyzed to determine the conclusive results (Shrum et. Al, 1995). For example, some surveys were only targeted at a certain demographics, leading to a relatively homogeneous study groups (Haytko and Matulich, 2007), while other data sets did not reflect the general population, as some secondary data either over represented or underrepresented certain populations, resulting in an incomprehensive analysis of data (Shrum et. This quest for answers has motivated many to seek out the divine and sacred spaces forged by the divine. Biblical scholar and historian Mircea Eliade argues that, man becomes aware of the sacred because it manifests itself [and] to designate the act of manifestations of the sacred [is the] proposed term hierophany (Eliade 1959: 11). In other words, a hierophany exists when the divine chooses to reveal himself, by defining a space or object as sacred through the divine s presence. After a hierophany occurs, the chosen object or space is deemed an axis mundi. Eliade defines axis mundi as, a universal pillar which at once connects and supports heaven and earth and whose base is fixed in the world below (Eliade 1959: 36). Using a comparative analysis of biblical texts and scholarly articles, this paper will discuss how a sacred space, specifically Jerusalem, manifests itself through God s choosing. Therefore Jerusalem is the holy dwelling place of the divine, because God chose it through his application of multiple hierophanies and his establishment of axes mundi within the city s walls. Jerusalem as a sacred dwelling place is reflected though its similarities to the Garden of Eden, where God created the first human beings on earth. Aristotle conceived of the ether as an unchanging fifth element, more perfect and heavenly in its invariance than earth, air, fire, or water. Nothingness, however, would be perfectly symmetric it would look the same from every angle rendering absolute spatial directions like up and down utterly meaningless. An ether, Aristotle figured, could serve as a kind of cosmic compass, an ultimate reference frame against which all motion could be measured. For those who abhorred a vacuum, the ether banished every last trace of it. The ancient ether stuck around for millennia until it was re imagined in the late 19th century by physicists like James Clerk Maxwell, who discovered that light behaves as a wave that always travels at a particular speed. Actual historical events, such as the scandal and subsequent litigation revolving around Anna Buschler which Steven Ozment detail s in the Burgermeisters Daughter, suggests something off a compromise between these two literary extremes. It is easy to say that life in the sixteenth century was surely no utopia for women but at least they had some rights. In this, both daughter s obedience to father and woman s obedience to man were turned on their heads, revealing that regardless of religious doctrines of male authority, life among the people was much more complex. While not a complete victory for Anna, the battle for her inheritance was not a complete loss either. She capably fought her father and even the entire city council of Hall. In 2000, there were more than 100,000 elephants left, but now, in 2017, there are only 35,000 to 40,000 left. Some of the problems Asian elephants face is habitat loss, ivory poaching and the kidnapping of young elephants. Luckily, there are many ways you can help to stop them from going extinct, including donating to places like the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, encouraging selective logging, shutting down ivory markets, donating and shunning places that advertise the chance to see a baby elephant. The main problem causing Asian elephants to be endangered is habitat loss. People have been cutting down the tropical forests where the elephants used to live and are building houses in the valleys and plains. In fact, about 20% of all humans live close to the current habitat of the Asian elephant. The elephants move to the hills and the remains of the forests, but even then they are still at risk. Because the elephants are forced into smaller areas, inbreeding may occur. The elephants are unable to mix with other herds, which causes their genetic material to be too closely related to that of other elephants in their herd. The migrations of the elephants have also been disrupted by habitat loss. Dams, coffee and tea plantations, railway lines, and roads break up the routes the elephants once used on their seasonal migration. Selective logging is one solution to habitat loss.
