91. PART 2:
THE WEDDING AT CANA
The wedding at Cana is a very special story in the Bible.
According to John... It went like this. In a place of Galilee there was
a wedding. After a while at the wedding all the wine was drunk by
the crowd of people.
Mary said to Jesus “ We have ran out of wine.’’Jesus replied “It is
not my time yet.’’Mary said to the servants “Do what Jesus tells
you.’’ Jesus told the servants to fill the jugs with water to the brim.
Jesus tasted the water and then he turned water into wine. This
was when Jesus performed His first miracle.
If I was Mary I would have felt worried for the family as they were
embarrassed that they had ran out of wine.
I think Mary would have felt amazed and proud of her Son as He
performed a miracle that showed Mary that He was very special
and would not refuse his Mother’s wishes.

98. THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED
VIRGIN MARY
On this feast of Mary we celebrate a special favour that God gave to Mary, our Mother.
The Assumption means that Mary was taken up into the heaven not only with her soul, but
also with her body.
Jesus, the Son of God was born from Mary’s pure womb. So when Mary died, God the
Father and Jesus, would not let the body of the Mother of God be spoilt. This was a reward
for her love of God and her years of faithful prayers and suffering.
Now Mary is in heaven. She is queen of heaven and earth. She is the Mother of the church
and queen of apostles. Every time Mary asks Jesus to give us graces, He listens to her
request.
103. THE HAIL MARY PRAYER
From the Church’s beginnings, prayers to Virgin Mary have held a place of honour for Catholics.
In heaven God said, “One day I will send my Son to help all people and to show them how to live. And I
choose Mary to be the Mother of Jesus, My Son.’’ So God sent his angel Gabriel to Mary and the angel
said:
Hail Mary,
The angel Gabriel visited Mary in Nazareth, in Galilee. The angel said to Mary that God loved her She was
Full of grace,
The angel Gabriel told Mary that God, who was in heaven so far away, had come to be close to her. She
was to be the Mother of Jesus. The angel said,
The Lord is with you.
After the angel left her, Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth. Her cousin knew how God was to Mary.
Elizabeth,
Blessed are you among women
Mary’s cousin Elizabeth knew that Mary was going to be the Mother of Jesus christ. Elizabeth said,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
We pray to Mary because she is so close to God, and because she is so close to her Son, Jesus Christ. And
so we say,
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners
Like a good Mother, Mary always hears us when we call to her. She hears us now, at this moment; and
when we come to the last moment of our life. And so we pray,
Now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.
106. PART 4: MARY MACKILLOP
Mary MacKillop was born on the 15 January 1842 in Melbourne,Victoria. Her parents were born in
Scotland and came to Australia. She had three sister and four brothers.
Mary cared about the people who had no one to look after them such as boys and girls who just
roamed the streets, children in the country who had no school to go to, people who were sick and
old people who had nowhere to live. Mary wanted more then anything to help these people.
Mary went to work as a teacher in a little country town in South Australia called Penola. There she
met Father Julian Tenison Woods who also wanted to do something for the poor children who could
not afford to pay the money needed to go to School. Together, in 1866, they began the first Saint
Joseph’s School in the old stable. Two of Mary’s younger sister also taught in the and other young
women came to help them.
On 19 March 1866 (Saint Joseph’s Day) Mary started to were a simple black dress and began the
Congregation of the Sisters of St Joseph. Now as a Sister, she dedicated her life to doing Gods work.
As more and more young women joined Mary as Sisters, they were able to start more schools. All
children were welcome at the Josephite schools, which provided free Catholic education.
In Adelaide they opened a place for women who had nowhere to live, an orphanage for children
who had no parents to look after them and a house were poor people could come and stay. The
Sisters visited people who were in jail and those who were poor and sick.
Mary MacKillop was kind to all people, even if they did not agree with her. She died on 8 August
1909 in Alma cottage, North Sydney. Mary helped many people during her lifetime and after she
died, the Sisters of Saint Joseph kept on doing the good work she had started.
Mary MacKillop kept her faith in God and bravely challenged those who did not support her vision
for a more caring world. Mary is an important Australian who spent her life helping people, especially
children. She is Australia’s first Saint.

DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT
Homelessness is a person who does not have access to safe, secure and adequate
housing.
There are more then 105,000 Australians who are homeless. This includes 7,500
families.
Over the last five years there has been an increase in the number of families being
assisted by homeless services.
Most of the children that homeless are under 12 years of age and it has an effect on
their education, health and well being.
To respond to the need of homeless people I could organise a “school sleepover.”
