1. Unit 57: Photography and
Photographic Practice
Research of other
photographers work by
Ashleigh Darlington
2. She is an American Portrait
Photographer. She started her career
when Rolling Stone magazine had just
been launched she became a staff
photographer, she began working at
other magazines but still creating her
own personal work. Robert Frank was
her main portrait photography influence
during her time at the san Francisco art
institute.
Annie Leibovitz
4. Out of all of Annie Leibovitz
images that I have looked at this
one is my favourite. She does a
lot of Disney themed images and
this is one of them. In most of her
work all the models used are
usually over posed. This image
was one of those she did when
she created an entire series for
Disney theme parks. The reason I
like this image so much is
because it isn’t just a simple
picture of a person/people. This
picture in my opinion tells a story.
All of Annie Leibovitz pictures are
very dark.
5. Composition
Annie takes her pictures and then
transforms them so with this image she
would have took the photographs
separately and made them all in one
picture to give it that sort of fantasy style
and effect that makes her work stand out
for being so unique.
She has used the rule of thirds technique
in this image for where she has placed
the 2 people at the front and then on the
other side far into the background is
another person. This also has a nice
landscape in the background so there is
a lot going on in this portrait, which I like.
The colour that Annie has made it
creates more of a fantasy feel to the
picture as well.
6. Techniques used
Annie hasn’t just used the rule of
thirds technique in this image she
uses it in most of the photographs
she takes, even the plain ones with
a clear background and a picture of
a star they tend to be placed at one
side of the image rather than the
centre like most portrait
photographers do I think she does
this because she always has a lot
more going on in the background.
Her images are also usually very
dark, with having dark colours and
also sometimes what they suggest
and the way the models are posed.
7. Strengths + Weaknesses
I really like when she does her fantasy type
images as I think they sort of tell a story and
more interesting and these are the images I
would like to try and do. I don’t really like
when she does her more simple images as on
the images she has done that are more
simple her models are nearly all of the time
naked. Although the images look good I just
think in comparison to the unique images she
creates then they don’t look good. The simple
pictures look like images
that most portrait
photographers take
whereas the fantasy
ones are unique and
make her stand out as
a photographer.
